The evolution of technology, and mainly the evolution of the Internet, has improved the way business is done. Nowadays, most services are offered through a website or through an app, as it is much more convenient and suitable for the customer. This business transformation made it possible to get a faster and cheaper service, and companies had to adapt to the change, in order to fulfill customers’ requirements. In this context, this paper relates to this digital transformation, focusing on a case study about Netflix, a former DVD rental company and currently an online streaming leader. We aimed to understand Netflix’s behavior alongside this digital wave. Thus, we performed a survey, which had 74 answers, mainly from Portugal, but also from Spain, Belgium, Italy, Turkey, Georgia and Malaysia. Of the people who answered the survey, 90.1% were stream consumers, but only 59.1% had premium TV channels. From those 90.1%, 58.3% also said that they watched streams between two and four times per week, but the majority of premium TV channel subscribers (63.8%) replied that they watch TV less than twice in a week. We see a trend in which the traditional TV industry is in decline and streaming as a service has increased in popularity. Consumer habits are changing, and people are getting used to the digitalization era. Netflix is also confirmed in our survey as the market leader of the entertainment distribution business, as stated in the literature, and the biggest strength of this platform is its content.

Netflix original series, global audiences and discourses of streaming success

Profile image of Michael L Wayne

2021, Critical Studies in Television

This article examines the discourses of streaming success within the television industry by focusing on Netflix and two of the service's original series: Fauda and La Casa de Papel. Using publicly available secondary data through 2019, this analysis argues the transnational platform's efforts to redefine successful television while maintaining a high level of data secrecy necessitate the discursive construction of a global and undifferentiated audience. Yet, rather than representing a break with the past, the discourses of streaming success reveal Netflix to be a television institution attempting to address traditional industry challenges.

Using the media industry studies approach, this article provides a history of the industrial discourses surrounding Netflix's audience data. From Netflix's entry into the streaming market in 2007 until late-2018, the company did not publicize information about viewership. During this time, executives' public discussions of proprietary data are understood in relation to multiple organizational goals: differentiating the streaming platform from the traditional television industry, denigrating traditional television industry practices, and deflecting criticism. In late-2018, the company began selectively publishing viewership numbers for a small number of original titles to highlight the popularity of the platform's original content. Although the company maintains its anti-transparency policies, the shift toward selective data releases has significant implications regarding Netflix's relationship with the traditional television industry. This analysis concludes with a discussion of streaming audience data that situates in the emerging realities of 'popular' television in the context the medium's broader transformations and continuities.

With the development of technology, television, which is the ultimate representation of mass media and indispensable for the domestic place has converged the digital media age. SVOD (Subscription video-on-demand) platforms and social media have become different mediums of mass communication in the contemporary world. With the entrance of Netflix, the most popular SVOD platform of the digital age, into daily life and domestic space, changes have occurred in the television culture of use by its audiences. This research aims to contribute to digital media approaches in the audience studies literature by examining the representation of Netflix culture of use in daily life, the changing television culture of use with Netflix, and the current position of television in the domestic space from an audiences' point of view. This is a qualitative and exploratory study, it is conducted by 14 participants by semi-structured in-depth interview technique. The critical discourse analysis method was used in data analysis to understand the audience's engagement with Netflix and television relationships.

Netflix non-English-language TV shows finding audiences beyond their country of origin is a significant change driven by the company, affecting both the production and distribution sectors as well as the audiovisual culture of Western viewers, who increasingly appreciate diverse audiovisual traditions. This investigation confirms a notable share of foreign product viewership by service users. Between June 2021 and December 2022, non-English TV shows accounted for 38% of the most popular Netflix TV rank in terms of accumulated viewing hours, reaching an average of more than 53 countries worldwide. This outcome results from two primary factors. The first is the company's business logic based on big data, content indexing, and user monitoring. The second is the global popularity of local non-English speaking content, which is also the consequence of diverse actions taken by the company in project development, audience prototyping, distribution, language, marketing, recommendation algorithms, and social conversation, both locally and globally. This research focuses on Netflix's glocal strategy as a case study and draws on direct interviews with company employees, audience data from its Netflix Top 10 website, specialized publications, and academic literature.

This paper studies Netflix’s algorithm of prediction, recommendation and mediation to promote audiovisual consumption and symbolic mediation of Latino images in global markets. I explore some of the mechanisms used by Netflix for cultural symbolic construction of a global, transnational, Latino discourse. I focus on Netflix’s audience engagement through the appropriation of Telenovelas’ operating rules for the development of a global transnational community of producers and consumers which reuse the elaborate production and interpretative process of Latino codes, meanings and contents. I argue that Latino culture, through its diverse cultural contacts functioning like a global Rio Grande, serves Netflix as a mechanism of textual production, distribution and consumption that operates through the conflicts between three latino global market geographies.

The global rise of Netflix as subscription video-on-demand (SVOD) has emerged along with its capitalization of film, television, and technology industry for the audience's convenience. It replaces the interest of local television with its claim of 'a global TV network' with cultural diversity in its contents. However, the term cultural diversity itself should be questioned whether it means to leave the American cultural power or it is only to claim themselves as a global company where global identity is represented in their identity to attract a wider audience. By using transnational approach, this study finds the use of cultural diversity merely to fulfill the demand of the American audience, with several globalization consequences in Netflix Original series, especially in non-American series. Those consequences are the homogenization in European-made Netflix series, where they appear to be fully Americanized with American lifestyle or American perspective, and heteroge...

From Parochialism to Cosmopolitanism in the American Audiovisual Supply? Netflix’s New Releases of Television Fiction in the United States and their Geographical Diversity

Revista Anagramas

The supply of films and TV series in the United States has been historically dominated by national programming produced by its powerful media conglomerates, significantly limiting the diversity and plurality of choices for their American viewers. Netflix and other video-on-demand platforms are changing this situation, significantly increasing the availability in the United States of fiction produced in different regions of the world, potentially exposing their subscribers to new narrative styles, scenarios, ethnicities, nationalities, languages, and cultural features. This study, based on the methodology of content analysis, analyzes the geographical origin and production type of new Netflix scripted television releases in the United States from January 2017 to June 2018 and discusses their potential relevance in broadening the degree of geographical diversity among American subscribers to the platform. The paper concludes that while Netflix USA substantially increased the supply of foreign television series in its catalog during that period, a sizeable part of the imports came from countries with high degrees of “cultural proximity” with the United States. The article concludes by discussing the possible “Americanization” of foreign audiovisual productions, formats, and genres bought or produced by Netflix.

In this article, we investigate Netflix, questioning the expectations of the public and the critics regarding changes that arise from the introduction of this service in the market. From the analysis of trade press coverage, access data, and the company's investment trends, we inquire what types of TV consumption experiences are at stake in the discourse promoted by analysts and novelty enthusiasts. We also discuss how evaluations on these platforms renew the ongoing controversies about television quality. In spite of the type of elucubration awakened by the sensation of ubiquity and stylistic revolutions, we will defend that the practices related to streaming work, in fact, as updated models of linear TV.

Chuck Tryon

This paper analyzes the promotional strategies of Netflix, arguing that the company reinforces what Pierre Bourdieu has called the discourses of distinction. In particular, the streaming service highlights what Tryon calls the promises of plenitude, participation, prestige, and personalization. Netflix highlights these discourses in part through its ongoing engagement with subscription cable channel HBO, and in part through promotional materials such as its TV Got Better campaign, which sought to naturalize viewing practices such as binge watching as being part of a technological and narrative cutting edge.

During the last fifteen years, audiovisual industries across the world have undergone profound transformations (Birkinbine et al., 2017; Hesmondhalgh, 2018; Miège, 2016). More specifically, the creation and international expansion of audiovisual services in the digital arena by US-based companies has taken place. Their global aims have boosted transnational market penetration strategies that have taken advantage ofthe global architecture of the World Wide Web. With the exceptionof China, which prohibits their entry and has developed its own services, the rest of the world has seen how US-based transnational operators have begun to act in their markets attracting clients.
