Biology

Through our well-rounded PhD in Biology and Biotechnology, you will delve into immersive research in biology and biotechnology while also sharpening your professional and pedagogical knowledge and skills. You will take core courses covering professional ethics, grant writing, and experimental design, and hone your communication skills by participating in department-wide research presentations. You may also take part in supervised teaching experiences and discuss interdisciplinary research initiatives in our Journal Clubs.

Students complete a qualifying exam by the end of the second year of study and round out required coursework with electives. Completion of PhD studies concludes with the preparation of a written thesis and successful oral defense.

To treat many infectious diseases, including the global scourge of tuberculosis, doctors must do battle with a wily adversary, bacteria. Unfortunately for afflicted patients, bacteria have also acquired strategies for thwarting attacks from the immune system and the onslaught of antibiotic drugs. We need to know more about the strategies bacteria use to survive stresses. Biology and biotechnology professor, Scarlet Shell, is seeking to do just that by probing the molecular changes that underlie these mechanisms.

Work in my lab is focused on defining the cellular mechanisms that maintain genome stability in normal cells and understanding how these pathways are corrupted in cancer cells.

Joseph Duffy

Defining signaling pathways that program cellular diversity is one of the foremost problems in biology and is central to my research interests.  In the lab we use molecular, genetic, and biochemical approaches to characterize the function of these pathways and to gain insight into their role in disease.  To date, the lab has focused on the Epidermal Growth Factor Receptor network, a principal therapeutic target for a variety of human cancers.

Luis Vidali

I deeply enjoy teaching, in particular conveying the important roles played by plants. It is a great reward when my students realize that plants are more complex and interesting than they anticipated, and they want to learn more. I enjoy that students at WPI are open about thinking in new ways; this critical thinking is the result of intense project-based learning.

Pamela Weathers

Prof. Weathers is an internationally recognized expert on Artemisia annua and artemisinin, having worked with the plant and its phytochemicals including the antimalarial drug, artemisinin, for >25 years. She is a Fellow of AAAS and SIVB, won many awards, given many national and international presentations, reviews manuscripts for many journals and proposals for many national and international funding agencies. She is an Associate Editor for multiple journals. Her lab was the first to genetically transform A. annua.

Tanja Dominko

Our lab investigates the molecular basis of phenotype switching in human fibroblasts that can be modulated using defined extracellular stimuli. We evaluate the role of oxygen and growth factor FGF2 isoforms independently and in combination in order to identify key molecular mechanisms and pathways, some of which closely mimic mechanisms described in human embryonic stem cells. Extended lifespan of these cells in culture also offers us a model for investigation of molecular mechanism that are regulating cell cycle in the context of both aging and cancer.

Natalie Farny

My lab works broadly in the emerging field of synthetic biology. Synthetic biology seeks to apply engineering design principles to the understanding and creation of biological systems. I use synthetic biology to design biosensors and bioremediation strategies for various environmental contaminants that impact human health, including lead, arsenic, and other toxic substances. We apply the tools of synthetic biology to address global challenges related to water, soil, and human health.

Lauren Mathews

Research in my laboratory addresses questions in the field of evolutionary ecology and environmental biology, and typically combines field work and laboratory studies. Current projects focus on two disciplines.

Reeta Rao

A member of the WPI faculty since 2004 and chair of the Department of Biology and Biotechnology since 2022, Reeta Rao is a leader in the field of molecular genetics and genomics. Her primary research activities are focused on emerging infectious diseases, specifically understanding and managing fungal diseases. Students and research associates in her laboratory are trained to use a variety of biochemical, molecular-genetic, and genomic tools to study host-microbe interactions to explore fungal virulence strategies and identify novel therapeutics in a high through

The central goal of my lab is to understand the regulatory mechanisms that underlie mycobacterial stress tolerance. We combine genetics, genomics, transcriptomics and biochemistry to understand how mycobacteria respond to, and ultimately survive, stressful conditions.

The training for a Ph.D. in Biology is focused on helping students achieve their goals of being a successful research scientist and teacher, at the highest level. Faculty 

PhD in Bioscience and Biotechnology students have two options for completing their coursework: entirely onsite at our main campus in Potsdam, New York, or in a hybrid format, with a mix of online and onsite courses.

Many of our full-time, research-based master's and PhD programs are housed in Potsdam. You will be in close proximity to many of our research labs and centers, our libraries and other resources.

Potsdam Campus

A complete application consists of the following:

  • Online Application Form.
  • Statement of purpose.
  • In your statement, please mention two or three faculty members who you believe would be good advisors/supervisors based on their research areas.
  • Three letters of recommendation.
  • Official transcripts.
  • GRE test scores.
  • Optional: Applications will be read without GRE test scores, but applicants should submit scores if they believe they will enhance their application.
  • For international applicants, an English proficiency test is required.
  • Minimum test score requirements: TOEFL (80) and TOEFL Essentials (8.5), IELTS (6.5), PTE (56) or Duolingo English Test (115).

Prerequisites: Applicants should possess a baccalaureate (four-year) degree in biology or a relevant science (e.g., biochemistry, biophysics, environmental science) with the following minimum college course preparation: three semesters of biology, including genetics; four semesters of chemistry, including organic chemistry; two semesters of physics and two semesters of mathematics, including calculus.

All graduate students are considered for University merit-based financial assistance, including teachings assistantships, research assistantships, fellowships and scholarships. This aid is awarded by each academic department. Not all types of assistantships are available in all programs. Teaching Assistantships

Teaching Assistantships (TAs) provide a stipend plus full tuition. Duties include an average of 12 hours of work per week for 50 weeks or 20 hours of work per week for 30 weeks. Duties may include assisting in the laboratory or recitation sections and grading of reports or homework.

Research Assistantships

Research Assistantships (RAs) require no teaching responsibilities and provide a standard stipend plus full tuition. Work is determined by the project's principal investigator (PI).

Biotechnology is the use and exploitation of organisms and biological processes for the benefit of industry, society and the environment. The biotechnological potential of animals, plants and microorganisms is vast, particularly through the use of advancing genomic technologies.

There are many applications of biotechnology such as the development of novel medicines and healthcare products, through to the genetic manipulation of crops and algae for providing food security and bioenergy, and the use of plant and microbes for environmental engineering such as bioremediation.

Biotechnology is a core strength of the Faculty of Science and Engineering at Manchester. Biotechnology research within the Department includes the genetic engineering of plants, bioremediation of terrestrial and aquatic environments, biofuels and bioproducts from plants, algae and microorganisms, environmental biotechnology, bioinformatics.

The doctoral degree programs within the School of Biotechnology & Biomolecular Sciences provide the highest level of training in key areas of scientific research. 

Program objectives

Students work on an independent research project encompassing the broader interests of one of the research teams within the school. In the early stages of the program, students receive close supervision and guidance in the management of their project. In the later stages, however, students are encouraged to exercise initiative and demonstrate originality. In the last year of the program, the candidate should be able to work independently and be guided rather than directed by the supervisor.

Entrance requirements

The minimum entry requirement for a PhD is a four-year Bachelor’s degree with First or Upper Second Class honours or completion of a Bachelor degree and substantial laboratory experience.

Applicants must seek and obtain agreement of a BABS academic to be their supervisor prior to applying; this is a key requirement to gain acceptance. View the  BABS HDR Information Booklet  for supervisors and research areas. Identifying and negotiating with prospective supervisors is key to gaining admission, and you will need to align your topic of interest with the research area of one of our School’s academics.

Program requirements

A Doctor of Philosophy Degree requires three years full-time study and completion of a written thesis. The length of a doctoral thesis is normally around 100,000 words. The thesis is reviewed by members of the Australian and international scientific academic community. In the course of their research, PhD students must make a distinct contribution to the knowledge within their specific discipline. Ideally, this will result in the publication of original research findings in peer-reviewed journals of international standing.

Domestic students: The Australian Government's Research Training Scheme (RTS) provides Commonwealth-funded higher degree by research (HDR) candidates with an exemption from tuition fees for the duration of their PhD by research for a maximum period of four years' full-time-equivalent study. Domestic students are liable for the UNSW Student Services Amenities Fee .

International students: Full details can be found on the GRS Fees and Costs page for International Postgraduate Research Candidates. Note that international students are exempt from the UNSW Student Services Amenities Fee.

A wide range of career opportunities exists in pharmaceutical and biotechnology companies, including research and development, clinical trials, quality assurance and control, regulatory affairs, and marketing and sales.

Drug discovery research within industry involves working on the discovery or development of new drug compounds, and may include various stages from initial chemical formulation to end stage clinical research. Entry level positions may be available with or without postdoctoral experience, with companies ranging from small start-ups to large global companies. Some pharmaceutical companies and contract research organizations look for PhD scientists to help set up, monitor and oversee clinical trials. Positions in quality assurance and control involve planning and quality control of scientific manufacturing plants and products, as well as design, development and implementation of systems and procedures in accordance with appropriate guidelines and legislation. Biotechnology is of national and international importance. It considers and develops knowledge about biochemical, molecular, ecological, and evolutionary processes. Biotechnology tools are applied in research underpinning biodiversity and biosecurity throughout Aotearoa New Zealand.

Biotechnology research is directed towards developing technology with both economic and environmental outcomes. The OECD has predicted that, by 2030, biotechnology will assume a major role in the global economy with the advances from research in the tertiary sector.

Bachelor of Science with Honours majoring in Biotechnology

Complete the following for the major:

  • BIOT480 Project
  • BIOL411 Research Preparation
  • BIOL412 Research Proposal
  • BIOL496 Plant Developmental Biology and Biotechnology

Another 30 points are chosen from BIOL429 , BIOL463 , and BIOL 455–462 .

The remaining course may be selected from other courses approved by the Programme Coordinator.

Postgraduate Certificate in Science majoring in Biotechnology

You will need to complete at least 45 points in 400-level BIOL courses for the major. In total 60 points must be completed for the PGCertSc from Biological Sciences and/or other Science courses.

Postgraduate Diploma in Science majoring in Biotechnology

At least 120 points of courses, including BIOL411 Research Preparation , BIOL412 Research Proposal , and BIOL496 Plant Developmental Biology and Biotechnology , is required for the major.

At least 45 points are chosen from BIOL429 , BIOL463 , BIOL 455–457 , BIOL 459-462 , with the remaining points selected from other courses approved by the Programme Coordinator.

Master of Science majoring in Biotechnology

Part I of the MSc in Biotechnology is 120 points, including BIOL411 Research Preparation , BIOL412 Research Proposal , and BIOL496 Plant Developmental Biology and Biotechnology .

45 points are chosen from BIOL429 , BIOL463 , BIOL 455–457 , BIOL 459-462 , and the remaining selected from other courses approved by the Programme Coordinator.

You will need a B+ Grade Point Average to proceed to Part II of the degree.

Part II requires BIOT690 MSc Thesis .

Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) in Biotechnology

In the PhD, you will complete a thesis of original research in the Biotechnology field ( BIOT790 Biotechnology PhD ).

My daughter has completed M.Sc. Medical Biotechnology through GATEB from Bhartiar University, Coimbatore with highest score and third ranked from the University and trying to pursue her Ph. D. Programme in Medical Biotechnology from Beloved Germany. Financially I am not in a position to send her , she is a brilliant student but due to poor financial condition she could not go aboard. If there is any opportunity she can shine and can do for the Germany as well as for the whole world.

Some of the popular scholarships available for biotechnology students include: Konrad-Adenauer-Stiftung Scholarship, Kaad Scholarship, JN Tata Endowment Scholarship, and MAWISTA Scholarship.
