RESEARCH AT THE LEADING EDGE
Doctoral Studies in Information Systems & Management
Ph.D. Studies in Information Systems & Management
The doctoral program in Information Systems & Management at Carnegie Mellon University's Heinz College prepares students with a deep understanding of the technical and organizational aspects of information systems.
At Heinz, we live and work at the critical nexus of information technology and public policy. Our Ph.D. in Information Systems & Management was created to train scholars to conduct innovative research that cuts across disciplines in order to address significant challenges in IT theory, strategy, management, and design as it relates to business and policy settings.
Heinz College Ph.D. students enjoy close partnerships with faculty as they explore the complex and exciting interconnectedness of information systems, public policy, and management. Upon graduating, our Ph.D.s receive desirable placements at academic institutions, government agencies, and consulting firms.
KEY RESEARCH AREAS
Doctoral students take on a broad range of topics and problems, but some key areas of strength at Heinz College include:
As technology enables most content to be digitized, it is also upending business models, competition, and policy needs. From electronic health records, to streaming music and videos, to online social networks, digitization is rapidly affecting every part of the user experience, generating new jobs, and displacing old ones. Our faculty is working on a variety of projects under this broad umbrella. Some major projects are examining the role of social networks, online piracy, digital distribution, impact of mobile, the role of online education, and so on. Faculty and students use variety of methods like field experiments, analytical and structural models to study these questions.
Michael D. Smith and Rahul Telang are world recognized experts on the media industry and copyright policies who also head the IDEA research center.
Beibei Li is an expert on social media, mobile marketing, and understanding individuals’ online and offline decision making.
Pedro Ferreira works on how people use technology in media and education, and is an expert on running randomized experiments.
Ramayya Krishnan applies operations research tools to a variety of problems in this domain.
Our world-renowned faculty extensively works with both private firms and policy makers.
We have multiple research centers like IDEA , LARC , and iLab which collect large quantities of data to examine these issues.
Growth of big data has offered opportunities for development and application of novel statistical and computational methods for solving societal problems such as crime, policing, fraud detection, health care and more. To be able to use this data requires cutting edge work on developing new methods and machine learning algorithms. Heinz College has some of the top faculty who work at the intersection of machine learning and public policy.
Some key faculty members working in this space are Leman Akoglu , George Chen , Jeremy Weiss , and David Choi . Each of them is working on problems that intersect the need to use Machine Learning method to solve critical societal problems.
We also offer a joint degree in Machine Learning and Public Policy.
Data security and privacy has increasingly become a complex issue that goes beyond mere technology. Faculty at Heinz College are working on understanding users’ security and privacy decisions using economics, behavioral economics, and data analytics frameworks. This leading edge research is at the forefront of designing better tools and better regulations.
Alessandro Acquisti is an expert on economics of privacy and has done path-breaking work in this space.
Rahul Telang ’s work illustrates that firms may not do enough to protect user data, and highlights how we should design our policies.
Leman Akoglu uses large-scale data to understand our security and privacy vulnerabilities.
This group also works closely with faculty from CyLab , an interdisciplinary research center. This work is highly influential, widely cited, and extensively funded.
This group's research is motivated by information technology's important role in improving health care for patients, hospitals, and doctors. Technology is extensively used in detecting outbreaks, in providing superior quality of care at lower costs, and in prevention of medical errors.
Rema Padman studies IT adoption in hospitals and physical practices.
Rahul Telang studies the role of electronic health records.
Martin Gaynor is a world-renowned expert on health policy and examines how technology can help improve policy outcomes.
Amelia Haviland examines the role of insurance policies and how they affect patient welfare.
As in other domains, our work on health care and IT is highly influential and has led to significant publications and extensive funding.

Students in this programme spend the first two semesters on advanced courses before embarking on a research project that culminates in a research dissertation.
Detailed information on the research interests of our faculty members can also be found here .
Structure of Programme
All graduate research students are admitted directly into a full-time graduate programme that leads to either:
- Doctor in Philosophy (PhD), if the candidate passes the Qualifying Examination (QE); or
- Master of Science (MSc), if the candidate fails the Qualifying Examination but is allowed to complete as an MSc candidate
PhD students admitted from August 2018 intake onwards to the Department of Information Systems and Analytics (DISA) will follow the structure for the IS PhD programme:
Coursework Requirements
All IS PhD candidates are required to complete four out of five foundation courses (16 units), spanning the different streams of IS research. For students who plan to work on economics of IS, design science, or data mining research, they can take relevant elective courses from the Computer Science or Economics departments in the first year. IS PhD candidates will also have the flexibility to select elective courses (24 units) that are relevant to their own study and research plan. For the elective courses, at least 16 units must be at level 6000, and at least 8 units must be from School of Computing.
PhD Qualifying Examination (QE)
The QE is to be taken by all postgraduate students, and the PhD candidate must pass his/her QE 18 months after admission. A maximum of two attempts will be allowed. Candidates are allowed to take the QE earlier than the specified period. There is no exemption of the QE. The PhD QE will be offered twice a year, e.g., in January/August for IS candidates. The research scholarship will be terminated the moment a student fails the QE. The student will complete the rest of the degree requirements as an MSc candidate.
The PhD QE for IS PhD students will be assessed through the Graduate Research Paper (GRP) after their first year of PhD study. The GRP should highlight the importance and novelty of the proposed research problem, and demonstrates sufficient knowledge of related literature and research methods, with the potential of publications in top journals or conferences.
PhD Thesis Proposal / Doctoral Seminar
The Thesis Proposal is an important component of the PhD programme. It should highlight the significance of the research topic, its goal, the approach adopted, and work to be done. It should be precise and convincing to the examiners that the candidate is proposing a novel area of research and the goal is achievable.
PhD candidates are encouraged to attempt the Thesis Proposal by their 5th semester of PhD study. A PhD candidate must pass his/her thesis proposal by the end of Year 3. The proposal will be examined by two faculty members of SoC familiar with the area of research in the proposal. A maximum of two attempts are allowed.
The PhD candidature of a student will be terminated if s/he fails to pass the Thesis Proposal. This student, subject to the approval of the School, may proceed to obtain an MSc degree by completing a dissertation and meeting all the requirements of an MSc degree.
The Thesis Proposal comprises of an open seminar presentation (doctoral seminar), followed by a close-door oral examination.
The presentation is a public talk open to both staff and students, and should take about 30 to 40 minutes. The seminar, which should include any research findings or work from published papers, will be graded on a satisfactory/ unsatisfactory (S/U) basis.
A close-door oral examination will follow after the seminar presentation. The student is expected to answer satisfactorily any questions raised by the evaluators
PhD Defense
The PhD Defense will be pre-scheduled when the candidate submits his/her thesis. It will comprise of an open seminar presentation, followed by a close-door oral examination.
Seminar presentation should take about 30 to 40 minutes. This will be a public talk open to both staff and students. After the presentation, a 10-minute Q&A session will be available for the public.
A close-door oral examination will follow after the seminar presentation. The student is expected to answer satisfactorily any questions raised on the subject matter pertaining to her/his research thesis and related subjects.
This oral examination will be conducted by a 3-member panel that is chaired by the Head or nominee.
Duration of Programme
The maximum candidature period inclusive of periods of approved study leave for PhD programme is 5 years
Language of Instruction

Streptococcus pneumoniae (Spn) is a gram-positive opportunistic pathogen and a leading cause of bacterial pneumonia, meningitis, and sepsis worldwide. Spn is typically categorized by serotype and in most cases colonizes the nasopharynx asymptomatically (defined as carriage). On rare occasions, it can spread into normally sterile sites and cause severe infections known as invasive pneumococcal disease (IPD). Both the ability of Spn to cause these life-threatening illnesses ( i.e., its invasiveness) and the length of time in carriage ( i.e., its carriage duration) vary substantially across serotypes. IPD cases can occur in isolation or, occasionally, spread as localized outbreaks, often arising within disadvantaged communities like people experiencing homelessness (PEH) and people who inject drugs (PWID). In this dissertation, we seek to explore how pneumococcal life-history traits, host demographic factors, and the interrelationships between them can impact invasive disease at the population level.
In Chapter Two we show that variation in carriage duration can confound serotype invasiveness measurements and identify the best performing metrics for invasiveness. Our results also support previous work showing that when invasion occurs, it does so at or near the time of carriage acquisition. In Chapter Three we show that Spn transmission is host density-dependent, resulting in a stratification of serotypes by human population density. The fourth chapter provides evidence that the risk of IPD and IPD clustering is in part governed by human social conditions, with increased risks in disadvantaged populations. In the final discussion chapter, we provide a broader discussion of potential future directions of research, building on the work in this thesis.
