Student Life
The program.
The LL.M. is a post-graduate programme that offers students who already graduated in law in countries with different legal cultures, a deeper insight on European and international law. Students enrolled in the LL.M. programme choose to specialize in either ' International and European Business Law ' or in 'International and European Public Law' . Each of these specialisations includes compulsory courses and a broad range of elective courses students can choose from. Courses from one specialisation may also be chosen as an elective in the other.
The LL.M. programme is taught by world-renowned academics , as well as the President of the Court of Justice of the EU, judges of the General Court of the EU and the European Court of Human Rights, practitioners at ‘Magic Circle’ law firms, international arbitrators, and officials of the European Commission.
Each of the specialisations includes eight LL.M. Law Clinics or 'Master Classes' led by distinguished legal and business practitioners. The clinics illustrate ‘law in action’ and allow you to engage with prominent legal experts. The first semester includes a Global Law Week . During this week, regular classes are suspended and the faculty invites prominent foreign Law and Criminology professors to teach all master's students and exchange views on different legal systems.
The LL.M. study programme also includes two 3-day study trips . Students will have the opportunity to attend several important European institutions, such as the Court of Justice of the European Union, European Investment Bank, European Court of Auditors. These study trips, including food and hotels, are included in the tuition fee.
Finally, all admitted LL.M. students can participate, free of charge , in the KU Leuven LL.M. Summer School , which takes place over a week immediately preceding the start of the academic year. During the Summer School, you will be immersed in European and International Law with a dynamic group of students from all over the world. You will be able to already meet your fellow students, get to know Leuven and the university. The programme includes short, intensive courses on themes that are in line with the expertise of the university and the guest speakers. These courses will include both an overview of the core concepts of EU & International Law, and a deep-dive in the contemporary issues in these fields today.
