Our Program

Yale's economics faculty embraces a broad range of research and teaching interests. Courses and seminars span a wide spectrum of economics, from dynamic structural models to field experiments. Our students apply econometric and data analytic methods to a variety of subjects in macroeconomics, labor economics and finance. Our courses examine critical economic policy issues, including antitrust and environmental regulation. Our focus is global, spanning the United States and developed economies to the developing nations of Latin America, Asia and Africa. Whatever your interest, our faculty is ready to guide you through a wide offering of more than a hundred regular courses, seminars or workshops, combined with individually tailored reading and research courses to best prepare you for your Ph.D. research and dissertation.

Our faculty is eclectic in methodologies and views of economics. There is no Yale dogma or school. You will acquire a critical perspective on the full range of approaches to macroeconomics. You will be well trained in neoclassical theory and in the theory of public choice, externalities and market failures. You will master the skills of sophisticated modern econometrics and understand pitfalls in its applications. You will gain respect for the power of contemporary mathematical models and also for history and for the insights of the great economists of the past.

Department of Psychology

You are here, overview of the program.

These are remarkable times for psychology. Scientific breakthroughs concerning the biological, emotional, cognitive, and social basis of normal and abnormal behavior are reported in the media almost daily. The faculty associated with the Department of Psychology at Yale University represents the cutting edge of research and scholarship in this broad and exciting field.

The primary goal of graduate education in psychology at Yale University is the training of researchers, for academic and applied settings, who will broaden and deepen the knowledge base on which the science of psychology rests. The graduate program in the Department of Psychology annually enrolls about 15 new Ph.D. students. When applying to the Department, each potential graduate student indicates one of five areas of concentration, and usually has a “home” in a particular lab, but it is also possible to collaborate with faculty and students in other labs and participate in programs that cut across these traditional areas (e.g., cognitive, affective and social neuroscience; health sciences).

Our Department has an illustrious history, but, more important, continues to reinvigorate itself by recruiting the most outstanding scholars we can identify in clinical psychology, cognitive psychology, developmental psychology, neuroscience, and social-personality psychology, with special efforts to attract those whose interests bridge these areas. These scholars include faculty, research scientists, postdoctoral fellows, graduate students, and undergraduates in Psychology and other programs (e.g., the School of Management, Interdepartmental Neuroscience Program).

A primary objective of our graduate program is to encourage research that follows from an understanding of the substantive and methodological bases of scientific psychology as well as from other social and biological sciences. We encourage students to appreciate the multiple historical and theoretical contexts from which the field has emerged, and to create an environment that facilitates student and faculty interest and participation in research activities. Moreover, many members of the faculty are committed to exploring the impact of their work on individual, community, and societal problems. Consequently, faculty and student interests and research often bridge basic science to issues of public policy, providing opportunities for students to develop broad areas of expertise.

We are deeply committed to graduate education and are eager to work closely with students to help them take advantage of the rich offerings of our Department and University in ways that suit their interests and talents. Our department is a thriving and diverse intellectual community that is committed to a culture of inclusiveness. The relatively small size of our graduate program and the large number of primary and affiliated faculty ensure that each student receives extensive attention in following an individualized curriculum. Over the years, we have cultivated a supportive environment that provides rigorous training. Our program is an active, exciting, flexible, and challenging setting in which qualified students who share our interests thrive. We welcome your application.

Department of Political Science

phd programs yale

Graduate Program

Yale’s Ph.D. program has a strong historical record of producing leading scholars in the field of Political Science. (Please note: The department does not offer a stand-alone MA in Political Science. Information about the Jackson Institute MPP in Global Affairs .) Many Yale graduates have also had successful careers in government, politics, non-profit organizations, and the private sector. This historical strength is matched by a strong faculty deeply engaged in training current graduate students to succeed in contemporary Political Science.

One of the Department’s strengths is substantive and methodological pluralism—there is no single “Yale way,” and our students and faculty are motivated by a range of questions in and across the subfields of Political Science. At the same time as we acknowledge this diversity of interests, the Department’s curriculum is designed to ensure students have adequate opportunities to master the core tools of contemporary social science research, including a four-course sequence in quantitative methodology and research design (statistics), a two course sequence in formal theory, courses on experimental design, implementation, and analysis, and a training program in qualitative and archival methodology.

The Department also offers training in five substantive subfields: American Politics, Comparative Politics, International Relations, Political Economy, and Political Theory. In each of these subfields, faculty regularly teach courses that expose students to both the foundational work in these areas and current active research topics. In many subfields, this training takes the form of formal or informal “sequences,” for example Comparative Politics I and II are taught each year. These classes are supplemented by topical seminars on selected and advanced topics.

In addition to regular courses, the Department and affiliated institutions (in particular, the MacMillan Center and the Institution for Social and Policy Studies) host a variety of (near-)weekly workshops in which outside speakers and Yale affiliates present and discuss work. These workshops provide a unique opportunity for students to observe the work of leading scholars, as well as to develop their own research in conjunction with faculty and student review. Information about these workshops is available here.

Students will also take two courses as a cohort. The first, Introduction to Politics, is for all Ph.D. students in their first semester. The second, Research and Writing, spans the second year and is centered on students producing a publishable quality research paper prior to embarking on the dissertation. Students in Research and Writing present their final paper in the Department’s mini-APSA conference in April.

About eighteen students enter the Ph.D. program each year. The total number of students in residence at any one time, including students working on their dissertations, is approximately 100, of whom about 40 are taking courses.

The Director of Graduate Studies for the Political Science Department is Hélène Landemore . Professor Landemore’s DGS office is located in Room 234  in Rosenkranz Hall, 115 Prospect Street. To contact Professor Landemore or sign up for DGS office hours, email her at dgs.polisci@yale.edu .

Passing the torch: majo orozco fuentes ’24 follows professor’s path to yale phd program.

majo and becky in yale sweatshirts

Psychology and neuroscience double major Majo Orozco Fuentes '24 will be heading to Yale University this fall after being accepted into the PhD program in biological and biomedical sciences. Exactly 15 years prior, her mentor Assistant Professor of Biology Becky Delventhal attended the same program.

Orozco Fuentes was one of Delventhal's first Richter Scholars. Together, they studied the molecular mechanisms of injury-induced neurodegeneration and an National Science Foundation-funded project on the glial-specific function of a protein in the endoplasmic reticulum. The mentor and mentee sat down to ask each other some questions about their experiences, college, and the future.

Orozco Fuentes: What's one thing you think I'll love about Yale?

Delventhal: You're a very engaged student already, and I think you'll find many opportunities to stay involved in activities outside of the research lab at Yale because it's a larger institution. You'll get to connect with what you love about research while exploring new interests, such as science outreach and communication.

Orozco Fuentes: What should I be prepared for with this PhD program?

Delventhal: Be prepared for stuff that you've honestly already experienced in your research here at Lake Forest: lots of failure. Something that will feel different is the time scale it happens over. There is something people refer to as the fourth-year slump in your PhD where you have been working in the lab over three years and being done with your thesis feels miles away. In my experience, that was when I got some unexpected results that made me think everything I had done the last four years was wrong. Know you can finish, you have the capacity and the skillset, and it's normal to feel the ups and downs.

Orozco Fuentes: What is one thing you hope I will always remember from my time at Lake Forest?

Delventhal: I hope that you remember to trust yourself. I feel like that is something that I really try to reinforce with my students. You have a very strong sense of self and confidence in yourself already, and I encourage you not to forget that at a larger institution where there may be new pressures. You can listen to people's ideas and advice, but remember that you are empowered to make your own decisions and know what is best for you.

Delventhal: What's something you learned at Lake Forest that you think you'll carry with you after graduation?

Orozco Fuentes:  Keeping an open mind and being open to learning from others. Lake Forest taught me to be flexible in my communication styles so I can work with a variety of different people and perspectives in and out of the classroom and lab.

Delventhal: You applied to this program while still enrolled at Lake Forest. What was the most challenging part of the application process?

Orozco Fuentes:  I think for me, one of the first challenges was narrowing down what programs I wanted to apply to. Another big challenge was reflecting on four years here and being genuine and professional in my personal statements while tailoring them to each school. I have been in the lab for long enough that I have a history with failure and also a history of success and discovery, so I was able to bring that into my statements. It was interesting figuring out how to explain my research in a way that makes it connect to my life, but in a professional and sophisticated way.

Delventhal: I remember feeling self-conscious that I had gotten into Yale because I didn't want to be too braggy, and you had a different reaction to your acceptance. You have embraced that a little more, which I wish I had been able to do. What does going to Yale mean for you?

Orozco Fuentes:  I am a first-generation student, and I am from Mexico. Research isn't really a career I knew you could do back home. I was set on going to medical school because I thought it was the only thing you could do with science. This is a big deal for my family, and I have been able to take pride in that.

Delventhal: I love that you are proud of that because you should be. Graduate programs like this are much more competitive for international students because there is such a limited number of slots. You are at a higher level and need to be an even more stellar applicant in order to get one of these spots.

Orozco Fuentes:  That's true. For one of the programs I visited, I was the only international visitor being interviewed out of a pool of 200 applicants. It is more competitive than it would be for US citizens because we rely only on private training grants, not federal training grants. It was kind of intimidating because the other international students I met while applying to Yale had very similar profiles and experiences to me whereas normally, I would stand out for all the research I've done. At Yale there is a big international community, which made me feel like it was more like Lake Forest. At Yale I will get more of the specific support I need. Lake Forest College is a very international community, and I was worried about going to a place that wouldn't preserve that feeling.

Award-winning statistician Bhramar Mukherjee, PhD, has been appointed Yale School of Public Health’s inaugural Senior Associate Dean of Public Health Data Science and Data Equity, an important new leadership position that reflects the school’s focus on data science as a critical pillar for the future of public health. She joins YSPH on Aug. 1, 2024.

Mukherjee currently holds a number of distinguished academic positions at the University of Michigan School of Public Health where she is the John D. Kalbfleisch Distinguished University Professor, Siobán D. Harlow Collegiate Professor of Public Health, and chair of the Department of Biostatistics. She is also a professor of epidemiology, and of global public health. In addition, Mukherjee serves as associate director for quantitative data Sciences at the University of Michigan’s Rogel Cancer Center and, last year, she was appointed assistant vice president for research, designing a comprehensive research data analysis service infrastructure for all three U-M campuses.

YSPH Dean Megan L. Ranney, MD, MPH, said Mukherjee’s appointment aligns with the school’s strategic goal of advancing public health data science, a critical part of YSPH’s leadership of the transformation of public health.

“This new role symbolizes our commitment to both rigor and equity in data science as the foundation of the future of public health,” Ranney said in an April 8 schoolwide announcement. “Dr. Mukherjee’s arrival will allow us to coordinate across public health disciplines and across the university in achieving our shared, future-focused, consequentialist vision of public health.”

At YSPH, Mukherjee will also hold the positions of Anna M.R. Lauder endowed professor of biostatistics and professor of chronic disease epidemiology. She will be a member of the Yale Cancer Center director’s cabinet. Additionally, she will hold a secondary appointment in the Department of Statistics and Data Science and will have affiliations with the MacMillan Center and the Institute for the Foundations of Data Science.

This new role symbolizes our commitment to both rigor and equity in data science as the foundation of the future of public health. Dean Megan L. Ranney

As senior associate dean, Dr. Mukherjee will work with Dean Ranney, the school’s senior leadership team, and the broader university community to develop and realize a strategic plan for public health data science and data equity that will enable transformational and impactful research in the face of quickly changing methods, technology, and societal shifts. In doing so, she will lead the development of resources to support the school’s public health data science and data equity research enterprise. She will also work to elevate YSPH’s data science and data equity education programs, with a goal of enhancing the pipeline of diverse scholars in this field. Additionally, representing YSPH’s commitment to global public health, she will support and create international collaborations that enhance the global practice, teaching, and science of public health data science and data equity.

She also plans to continue her own research and teaching.

Mukherjee said she felt “a strong intellectual resonance” with the Yale community when she visited YSPH in August 2023 as the inaugural speaker for the Dean’s Leaders in Public Health lecture series.

“I was inspired by the transformative vision Dean Ranney has for YSPH and more broadly for academic public health,” Mukherjee said. “Data is a quintessential quantum of research, but we often forget to ask the fundamental question: who is in my study? I believe everyone should have equal opportunity of benefitting from data resources and data products.”

“Data equity, both in terms of quantity and quality of data, is a critical pillar of health equity, climate equity and more broadly, societal equity,” Mukherjee continued. “I am deeply honored to have this inaugural leadership position underscoring the importance of data to improve the human condition. I am grateful for the opportunity to work with the Yale community to advance our collective pursuit of creative, impactful, fair, and equitable data science.”

Mukherjee said the decision to leave the University of Michigan after 18 years was “exceptionally hard”. She thanked her students, friends, and colleagues at U-M for “shaping my vision for public health data science.”

Mukherjee joins a strong team of data scientists at YSPH. Faculty in the Department of Biostatistics are considered international leaders in their field and have been extensively recognized for their pioneering work. YSPH’s acclaimed public health modeling unit , which exists across multiple departments in the school, is particularly acclaimed for its deep and direct impact in Connecticut and internationally during the COVID-19 pandemic, providing policymakers with timely data-driven insights to help guide emergency response. YSPH’s core data science centers such as the Yale Center for Analytical Sciences , the Center for Methods in Implementation and Prevention Science , and Center for Perinatal, Pediatric and Environmental Epidemiology , bring researchers and scholars together to spur development of innovative statistical tools and techniques that are used to address today’s most pressing public health and biomedical challenges.

Biostatistics Department Chair Steven (Shuangge) Ma said Mukherjee’s leadership and research strengths will elevate YSPH data science work to a new level.

“Bhramar is a remarkable researcher and a true leader in the field,” Ma said. “She has made profound methodological contributions to the foundation of biostatistics and equally importantly public health practice. We are thrilled to have her join us.”

Mukherjee’s methodological research interests include statistical methods for analysis of electronic health records, studies of gene-environment interactions, shrinkage estimation, data integration, and analysis of multiple pollutants. Her collaborative contributions have focused on cancer, cardiovascular diseases, COVID-19, exposure science, environmental epidemiology, and reproductive health. She has co-authored more than 380 publications in statistics, biostatistics, medicine, and public health and has served as a principal investigator on multiple NSF and NIH grants. She is the founding director of the University of Michigan’s undergraduate Big Data Summer Institute and has been leading the program for the past nine years.

Mukherjee’s innovation and leadership in data science has been widely recognized. She is a fellow of the American Statistical Association and the American Association for the Advancement of Science. She was elected to the National Academy of Medicine in 2022. She is the recipient of many awards for her scholarship, service, and teaching at the University of Michigan and beyond, including the Gertrude M. Cox award, the L. Adrienne Cupples award, the Janet L. Norwood award, the Karl E. Peace Award for Outstanding Statistical Contributions for the Betterment of Society, the Jerome Sacks Award for Outstanding Cross-Disciplinary Research in statistics and, most recently, the 2024 Marvin Zelen Leadership Award. She also is a recipient of the Outstanding Statistics Alumnus award, Distinguished Woman Scholar award, and Distinguished School of Science Alumnus award from her alma mater, Purdue University.

During her distinguished academic career at the University of Michigan, Mukherjee received many prestigious institutional awards including the School of Public Health Excellence in Teaching Award, Rackham Distinguished Faculty Achievement Award, the Sarah Goddard Power award for improving the work environment for women, and the highly coveted Distinguished University Professorship. Mukherjee and her team took an active role in modeling the SARS-CoV-2 virus trajectory in India during the COVID-19 pandemic. She has been featured in many major media outlets including the BBC, Der Spiegel, Forbes, NPR, the New York Times, Reuters, Wall Street Journal, and the Times of India.

This fortnight, Katerina Sotiraki, Yale Assistant Professor of Computer Science is giving an “Introduction to Lattice-based Cryptography”

— A program for and by students!

Come share your love and enthusiasm for physics at the Physics Open Mic —an informal, bi-monthly lecture series by and for graduate students and postdocs.

You don’t have to be an expert to attend or to give a talk, you just have to be curious! Want to talk about wormholes and entanglement, or about how the new amplifier in the lab works? At the open mic, you can talk about whatever science excites you, and we get to learn! Talks should be accessible to a general physics audience, and the topic does not need to be related to your own research. Of course, there will be food for thought and nourishment!

A Transformative Journey: Two Perspectives on Yale’s EMBA Program

As they prepare to graduate, two EMBA students reflect on their experience at Yale SOM.

Oge Ezimakor ’24, MD     Focus Area: Healthcare

Words are not enough to describe my executive MBA experience at Yale SOM. As an aspiring physician entrepreneur and executive, I knew that I needed to learn more about managing the administrative and operational affairs of a healthcare system, while also sharpening my leadership skills.

My passion has always been to bring quality healthcare services to underserved populations. However, one big question has long bedeviled me: as a bootstrapping physician entrepreneur, how do I achieve this in a cost-effective manner without compromising quality of care? Becoming a successful physician executive requires continually developing hard and soft skills in order to adapt to an ever-changing healthcare environment. As a physician executive, I needed an EMBA program that would enhance my leadership skills. Needless to say, the Yale EMBA program has proven to be the perfect fit!

The EMBA program is structured to include three focus areas: healthcare, asset management, and sustainability. By focusing on healthcare for the past two years, I have undergone remarkable growth and transformation. I feel like a reborn individual, so much that it is difficult for me to reconcile my before and after selves. The relationships and bonds I have formed are phenomenal! Yale SOM educates leaders for business and society, and this is exactly how I view myself and my cohort—leaders for business and society, literally!

I want to give huge recognition and thanks to Yale SOM’s seasoned professors and administrative staff that supported us along the journey. Their dedication and commitment to the success of the program and its students is unparalleled.

Abraham Gutsioglou ’24, PhD     Focus Area: Asset Management

As I reflect on my EMBA journey, three categories come to mind: personal growth, relationships, and interdisciplinary thinking.

Let’s begin with personal growth. Day one of what felt like “hell week” during our first year was a humbling and equalizing experience. It had been many years since I was in a classroom setting as a student, and I was optimistic that my skills would carry me forward. The first evening at Yale SOM was very difficult, as I quickly realized that I was surrounded by brilliant people who were at the top of their fields. My optimism quickly morphed into doubt and thoughts of, “What did I just get myself into?” I felt alone, and was preparing myself for what I thought would be two years of grueling competition with my classmates.

This leads me to the link between my personal growth and the relationships I built along the way. Although I prepared myself to compete, I am happy to say that I never had to go down that path, because this program does not foster that kind of culture. As a cohort, we encouraged, challenged, and supported one another. I am not saying the program and classmates are soft; rather, when things got difficult, I could easily find someone to help get my mindset back on track. This feeling of support extends beyond my classmates into the faculty and staff. The relationships and friendships I made on this journey pushed me to grow way beyond any self-doubt and step out of my comfort zone.

Finally, let’s talk about business and society. The best phrase to describe what I consider to be one of the most valuable takeaways from this program is "interdisciplinary thinking.” The program is structured in such a way that in order to finish, students have to unlock the capability to think differently about themselves and the world around them. I am grateful to have learned how to see problems as puzzles that can be solved through interdisciplinary thinking. This new insight allows me to integrate the perspectives of multiple stakeholders and disciplines to create shared value for business and society at large.

The oldest technical university in Russia was founded in July 1830 as the Moscow Vocational School. Engineering training was conducted in two areas: practical craft and theoretical foundations. Russian industrialists highly appreciated the graduates of the institution, many of whom, shortly after training, occupied key positions in factories. In 1868, the educational institution acquired the status of the Imperial Moscow Technical School. Here fundamental scientific schools were emerging, new buildings and dormitories were being built. The system of training engineering specialists, the so-called "Russian method of training", was gaining popularity around the world. In 1876, after the victory of IMTS at the World Exhibition in America, the method was adopted not only by Russian, but also European and American universities. The secret of training was a unique combination of serious theoretical training, the development of practical skills in conditions close to real and the relationship of the school with industrial enterprises. At the beginning of the 20th century, the school was first recognized as the best technical educational institution in Russia. After the revolution of 1917, the university experienced a series of transformations, as a result of which several separate technical institutes stood out.
