Writing Your VP Sales Resume: Section By Section

header, 1. put your name on its own line.

Your name should be the most prominent element in your header, so it's best to put it on its own line. Use a larger font size than the rest of your header details to make it stand out.

Here's an example of what to do:

  • [email protected] | 555-123-4567 | linkedin.com/in/johndoe

Avoid formatting your name on the same line as your other details, like this:

  • John Doe | [email protected] | 555-123-4567 | linkedin.com/in/johndoe

2. Include your email, phone, and LinkedIn URL

In addition to your name, your header should include your professional email address, phone number, and a link to your LinkedIn profile. These are the key pieces of contact information that recruiters and hiring managers need to get in touch with you.

Here's an example of a well-formatted header for a VP of Sales:

John Doe [email protected] | 555-123-4567 | linkedin.com/in/johndoe Dallas, TX

Avoid including unprofessional email addresses or outdated social media profiles. Stick to the essentials that position you as a credible sales leader.

3. Highlight your sales leadership role

If you have a strong personal brand as a sales leader, consider including your current or most recent job title in your header. This can help recruiters quickly identify you as a qualified candidate for VP of Sales positions.

For example:

John Doe VP of Sales, SaaS Solutions [email protected] | 555-123-4567 | linkedin.com/in/johndoe Dallas, TX

However, avoid stuffing your header with multiple job titles or keywords. Keep it focused on your most relevant and impressive sales leadership role.

  Summary

A resume summary for a VP Sales role is an optional section that can be beneficial if you want to provide additional context or highlight key achievements not already covered in your resume. It's a brief overview of your most relevant qualifications, skills, and experiences that make you a strong candidate for the position. However, it's important to avoid using an objective statement, as they are outdated and focus on what you want rather than what you can offer the employer.

When crafting your VP Sales resume summary, focus on showcasing your ability to drive revenue growth, lead sales teams, and develop strategic partnerships. Use metrics and specific examples to back up your claims and make your summary more impactful. Keep it concise, typically no more than a paragraph, and tailor it to the specific VP Sales role you are targeting.

1. Highlight your sales leadership experience

When writing your VP Sales resume summary, it's crucial to emphasize your experience in leading and managing sales teams. Hiring managers are looking for candidates who have a proven track record of driving sales growth and developing high-performing teams.

Instead of simply stating that you're an experienced sales leader, provide specific examples of your achievements:

  • Seasoned VP Sales with 15+ years of experience leading global sales teams in the SaaS industry
  • Proven track record of building and managing high-performing sales teams that consistently exceed targets

Avoid using vague or generic statements that don't provide any real insight into your abilities:

  • Experienced sales professional with leadership skills
  • Results-oriented VP Sales looking for a new challenge

2. Showcase your ability to drive revenue growth

As a VP Sales, one of your primary responsibilities is to drive revenue growth for the organization. Your resume summary should highlight your ability to develop and execute sales strategies that result in increased revenue and market share.

Use specific metrics to quantify your achievements and make your summary more impactful. For example:

  • Drove annual revenue growth from $50M to $150M within three years by expanding into new markets and securing strategic partnerships
  • Consistently exceeded sales targets by 20%+ year-over-year, resulting in $100M+ in new revenue

  • Increased revenue and market share for my previous employer
  • Successful in driving sales growth and meeting targets

3. Demonstrate your strategic thinking and problem-solving skills

As a VP Sales, you'll be expected to develop and implement sales strategies that align with the organization's overall goals and objectives. Your resume summary should showcase your ability to think strategically and solve complex problems to drive business growth.

Highlight specific examples of how you've developed and executed successful sales strategies, such as:

Developed and implemented a new account-based marketing strategy that resulted in a 30% increase in qualified leads and a 20% increase in average deal size.

Additionally, emphasize your problem-solving skills by providing examples of how you've overcome challenges or obstacles in your previous roles:

Successfully navigated a highly competitive market by identifying untapped opportunities and developing targeted sales campaigns, resulting in a 25% increase in market share within the first year.

  Experience

The work experience section is the most important part of your VP Sales resume. It's where you show a hiring manager how you've made an impact in your previous roles and why you'd be a great fit for their company.

In this section, we'll break down everything you need to know to write an effective work experience section step-by-step, with plenty of examples to inspire you.

1. Focus on your impact and results

When describing your previous roles, don't just list your day-to-day responsibilities. Instead, focus on the impact you made and the results you achieved. Quantify your accomplishments whenever possible.

Here are some examples of how to showcase your impact as a VP of Sales:

  • Grew annual revenue from $5M to $25M in 3 years by expanding into new markets and revamping the sales process
  • Led a team of 50 sales reps to consistently exceed quota by 20%+ each quarter
  • Implemented a new CRM system that increased sales productivity by 30% and reduced customer churn by 15%

Not sure if your resume is highlighting your impact effectively? Try running it through Score My Resume . This tool will give you instant feedback on over 30 key criteria hiring managers look for, so you can optimize your resume and land more interviews.

2. Highlight your leadership and people management skills

As a VP of Sales, a big part of your job is leading and managing a sales team. Make sure to showcase your leadership abilities and people management skills in your work experience section.

Here are some examples:

  • Coached and mentored a team of 15 junior sales reps, resulting in 80% of them being promoted within 2 years
  • Collaborated with cross-functional teams including Marketing, Product, and Customer Success to align on go-to-market strategy and improve sales-marketing alignment
  • Developed and implemented a new sales training program that reduced ramp time for new hires by 50%

Avoid generic descriptions like:

  • Managed a sales team
  • Responsible for hitting sales targets

Tailor your resume to each job by ensuring you're highlighting the right keywords. Targeted Resume is a tool that analyzes your resume against a specific job description and provides personalized feedback to help you get past applicant tracking systems (ATS) and impress hiring managers.

3. Show off your industry expertise and technical skills

VP Sales roles can vary widely depending on the industry, so make sure to highlight your relevant industry expertise and technical skills. This shows hiring managers that you understand their specific business challenges and goals.

For example, if you're applying for a VP Sales role at a SaaS company, you might write:

Managed a portfolio of 50+ enterprise SaaS customers in the finance industry, deeply understanding their security and compliance needs. Collaborated with Product and Engineering teams to develop custom solutions to meet client requirements.

Or if you're applying for a role in the manufacturing industry:

Oversaw sales of industrial equipment to automotive manufacturers across the Midwest. Partnered with R&D to bring new IoT products to market. Negotiated long-term contracts with major clients like Ford and GM.

Industry terminology can vary, so make sure you're using the same language as the job description. This will help your resume pass ATS screenings and show the hiring manager you're a strong fit. Targeted Resume is a great tool for ensuring your resume is well-tailored.

4. Demonstrate your strategic thinking and problem-solving abilities

VP of Sales is a strategic role that requires creative problem-solving. Use your work experience section to show off times you encountered a challenge, devised a solution, and achieved results.

Here are a few examples of strategic thinking in action:

  • Launched a new sales territory in the Southeast, hiring and training a team of 10 reps. Grew regional revenue 200% in the first year
  • Performed customer segmentation analysis to identify highest-value opportunities. Realigned team structure around key segments, increasing average deal size 40%
  • Revamped pricing model to better align with usage patterns. Increased average customer lifetime value by 25% while maintaining competitive win rates

Skip the generic and focus on specific examples of your strategic abilities.

As a senior sales leader, it's important your resume tells a cohesive story about your career progression and increasing scope of responsibility. Read through your work experience section with a critical eye to ensure there's a clear narrative throughline that demonstrates your growth and readiness to take on a VP of Sales role.

  Education

The education section of your VP of Sales resume should be concise and strategic. It's an opportunity to showcase your relevant academic background and any specialized training or certifications that make you a strong candidate for the role. Here are some key tips to keep in mind as you write this section.

1. Put education at the bottom if you're experienced

If you have several years of sales leadership experience, it's best to prioritize your work history over your education. In this case, list your education at the bottom of your resume after your professional experience section.

Here's an example of how a senior candidate might format their education section:

MBA, Wharton School, University of Pennsylvania BS Business Administration, University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign

Notice how the example omits the graduation years to avoid potential age discrimination. It's a strategic choice for experienced candidates.

2. Highlight sales-specific coursework and training

If you've completed any courses, training programs, or certifications that are directly relevant to sales leadership, be sure to include them in your education section. This could include topics like sales management, business strategy, negotiation, or leadership development.

Bad example:

  • Completed general business courses
  • Studied a variety of subjects in my MBA program

Good example:

  • Coursework: Sales Management, Business Strategy, Negotiation
  • Completed Leadership Development Program at ABC Company

3. Include impressive academic achievements

If you have any notable academic achievements, such as graduating with honors, include them in your education section. These details help you stand out from other candidates and demonstrate your strong work ethic and ability to excel.

Master of Business Administration (MBA), ABC University, 2018 • Graduated Summa Cum Laude with 3.9 GPA • President of MBA Sales Club Bachelor of Science in Marketing, XYZ College, 2014 • Graduated Magna Cum Laude

Just be sure to keep the details concise and relevant to the VP of Sales role.

  • Strategic Savings and Efficiency: At Boyle Ltd, Carla's effort to source a new product resulted in a 60% reduction in printing expenses, which saved more than $500,000/year. This shows she doesn't just focus on revenue growth but also on cost-saving, making operations more efficient.
  • Certifications Relevant to the Role: Carla has a Six Sigma Black Belt certification from the Management and Strategy Institute, which indicates proficiency in improving organizational processes and reducing errors. This is particularly important for a VP of Sales role where streamlining processes and enhancing efficiency can lead to improved sales outcomes.
  • Talent Management and Team Growth: Carla's experience in talent acquisition, where she hired 40+ Sales Execs and multiple VPs at Nader, combined with her management of a 40+ person organization at Rolfson while lowering turnover to <10%, underscores her strength in building and maintaining strong teams, a critical aspect for a VP of Sales.

How to format a VP of Sales resume

When competing at a high level in a competitive market, organized formatting and a clear message are crucial. It’s the first thing recruiters notice when they look at your resume and gives them their first impression of you as a candidate.

Your VP of sales resume will have to stand out among your equally skilled and qualified peers, so there’s no time to waste with getting off on the right foot.

Here are a few areas to focus your attention when formatting your resume for VP of sales positions:

  • Reverse chronological layout - this resume style puts the central focus on your work history in a reverse timeline. VP roles come after years of commitment in your field and hiring managers will see your steady career growth with this layout.
  • Header - the top of your resume should include a brief but important header that provides professional contact information and a link to your online profile. Including a URL to your LinkedIn profile will show employers how you maintain a visible and impressive digital presence.
  • Key achievements - industry achievements demonstrate a consistent track record in your field and show potential employers the kind of success you will bring to their company. Use metrics like growth percentages, quota achievements, and team performance to highlight your value.
  • Limit to one page - just because you can fill pages and pages with your work experience doesn’t mean you should. Recruiters are busy and don’t want to comb through every job you’ve ever had. Include only the strongest and most relevant information on your VP of Sales resume and tailor every section to fit your target job .

Ensure preservation of formatting and added security by using a PDF file format instead of Doc. Don’t waste hiring managers’ time with files that are difficult to access or read.

The top sections on a VP of Sales resume:

What recruiters want to see on your resume:, how to write your vp of sales resume experience.

Your resume experience section is where you show your work history along with accomplishments from each job. Each role should include 3-4 bullets highlighting your top achievements.

Be mindful of not just listing job duties without achievements. This section must demonstrate that you have strong inside knowledge of your industry and have achieved measurable success.

Let’s look at a VP of sales resume sample experience section.

  • • Became VP in spring 2020
  • • Supervised and managed reports
  • • Led successful new product launch

What doesn’t work in this example:

  • No measurable data - “led successful new product launch” and “managed reports” are meaningless if the success is not quantified. The definition of success is open to interpretation. Don’t expect employers to take your word for it.
  • Lacking context - “became VP in spring 2020” is irrelevant and maybe even harmful to your chances without proper context. Why did this candidate change positions in the middle of their time at this company? What prompted the change?
  • No mention of sales tech - tools and technologies in sales evolve rapidly. Companies need to know you’re up to date on the latest trends and platforms. Be sure to include accomplishments that involve current industry tools.

Let’s make a few updates and take another look.

  • • Promoted from Lead Sales Representative to VP of Sales in 2020
  • • Supervised and managed 20 reports using CRM tools that resulted in 250% increase in revenue growth
  • • Led new AI-driven product launch that earned $2.7M in revenue and reduced travel costs by 20%

What works in this example:

  • Shows career growth - “promoted from Lead Sales Representative to VP of Sales” shows commitment to the job and growth in the role.
  • Quantifies success - real numbers and data like “250% increase in revenue growth” and “earned $2.7M in revenue” provide measurable evidence to back up claims of success. Employers will see how you will impact success in your role.

How to quantify impact on your VP of sales resume

Companies want a VP of sales who is going to increase profits and generate impressive revenue. They’re not going to hire a candidate without a proven track record.

Quantify your achievements from previous roles by using real numbers and data in your resume. Show hiring managers exactly what you have accomplished.

Here are a few areas to consider when deciding what numbers to include in your VP of sales resume:

  • Quota attainment percentage of your sales team. A consistently high quota attainment reflects strong team management and coaching skills.
  • Number of salespeople you've directly managed or trained. This emphasizes your leadership capabilities and capacity to handle large teams.
  • Growth rate in the size of deals or contracts secured. Demonstrating an ability to close bigger deals suggests competence in targeting high-value clients or upselling.
  • Any reduction in customer churn or increased customer retention percentages. This underlines the quality of sales and after-sales processes under your leadership.

How to list your hard skills and soft skills on your resume

Showing sales tech skills and other industry expertise are crucial to an impactful VP of sales resume. Potential employers want someone who can compete in a rapidly changing sales landscape.

Skills on your VP of sales resume will be in two categories - hard skills and soft skills.

Hard skills are the technical knowledge and abilities needed to perform job duties. Soft skills are the interpersonal and communication skills needed to interact with others.

The main difference in these two sections on your resume is presentation. Hard skills are listed while soft skills include examples.

Let’s look at an example of hard skills on a VP of sales resume.

If you’re listing hard skills on your resume, hiring managers will assume proficiency. Only include technical skills that you’re confident in and are prepared to do on the job.

Here are a few more hard skills companies look for in their VP of sales.

Best hard skills for your VP of Sales resume

Unlike hard skills, soft skills require a bit more of an explanation. Choose a few top soft skills and provide an example of how you use them to achieve success.

Soft skills are a good opportunity to show employers that you’re a good cultural fit by sharing their company ethos or your willingness to relocate with a passion for travel.

Let’s take a look at an example of a VP of sales soft skills.

Here are a few more soft skills to consider including on your VP of sales resume.

Best soft skills for your VP of Sales resume

How to list your certifications and education on your resume.

Most VPs of sales will have a bachelor’s in a business-related field. Some may even have a masters in a similar field.

Certifications in sales tech or CRM software can be a great way to increase impact on your resume, especially if you are changing industries or want to stay up to date on trends.

Writing the experience section on your VP of sales resume will be fairly simple, but it is still important to get right.

Let’s look at an example of an education section on a VP of sales resume.

The education section above is simple, but effective. A good education section includes the following:

  • Name of degree
  • Name of institution
  • Years attended

Details like GPA and coursework are not necessary and typically left out when applying for high-level positions. Only include this info if specifically requested in the job listing.

A VP of sales certification section will be similarly basic. Just the name of the certificate and issuing institution is sufficient.

Let’s take a look at an example with a common certification for a VP of sales.

Here are additional certifications to consider adding to increase impact on your VP of sales resume.

How to write your vp of sales resume summary or objective.

A summary or objective is a great way to introduce yourself to hiring managers and highlight your top industry accomplishment in 3-4 sentences.

Though the terms are often used interchangeably, there is a slight difference between a summary and an objective.

A summary is a brief introduction that communicates your position and value in your industry. An objective looks to the future and captures what you are hoping to achieve in your new position.

For candidates with a long career and many achievements to choose from, a summary is the better choice. If you’re applying at the VP level, you want to show companies what you’ve already accomplished in the industry.

However, it is a good strategy to finish your summary with a mutual goal you share with your target company. This will show that you’ve done your research and are prepared to impact success.

Let’s look at an example of a vice president of sales resume summary.

What doesn’t work with this example:

  • No quantifiable achievements - this candidate makes general claims like “successful product launches” and a “leader with experience” without providing evidence. Backing up claims with specific metrics and measurable results make a summary stronger.
  • General statements - blanket claims like “I can work with customers” or the use of “innovative sales tech” don’t really mean anything without specifics. Don’t leave anything to the imagination in your summary and communicate exactly what makes you a great candidate.
  • Unclear goal - ending the summary without a clear shared goal with the target company shows how your experience makes you the right fit for the role. Be sure to research the company and find out how you can provide solutions to their specific problems.

Let’s make a few updates and try this VP of sales summary again.

  • Cites measurable results - this updated summary now includes specific metrics and numbers like “50+ representatives” and “$4.5M in revenue” that show how the candidate will impact success. Highlight your best and most relevant industry achievement in your summary to show your value right away.
  • Shows current industry knowledge - showing that you achieved your results by using up to date terminology like “AI software and CRM tools” shows potential employers that you operate in a competitive landscape and can keep up with the latest technology.

Additional sections for a VP of Sales resume

As vice president of sales, you may have some relevant experiences that don’t fit the standard resume sections. Over the course of your long career, it’s understandable that you’ve developed skills in different areas.

If you have skills, experiences, or abilities that are relevant to your target job, consider adding additional sections to your resume.

Here are a few sections to consider for your VP of sales resume:

  • Languages - speaking multiple languages can be of great value in VP positions, especially if the role requires communication or marketing in different languages
  • Volunteering - show your relevant background by including volunteer experience, especially if it included sales or leadership skills

How to write a resume

If you want your VP of Sales resume to make the right impression on employers, you need to make sure that it effectively details your ability to generate powerful results for any company that hires you. When recruiters or hiring teams review your resume, they should be able to identify your core skills, experiences, and achievements – and immediately recognize how those qualifications and results can provide value for their team.

To create that type of executive resume, you’ll need to focus on highlighting the right skills and experiences, using a format and structure that weaves a comprehensive narrative about your abilities and track record of success. In the sections that follow, we’ll go through each of the key steps that you should follow to generate the most convincing resume possible.

Control the resume length and focus

Make sure that your resume is no more than two pages in length. If you maintain a tight focus on your presentation, you should be able to cover all your key skills, experiences, and accomplishments in just two pages. If you find yourself running out of room, chances are that you just need to edit your content to be more concise.

Use the reverse-chronological resume format

Though there are three resume formats available, we recommend the reverse-chronological option for most job seekers. One of your goals as a VP of Sales candidate is to highlight your career progression so that employers can see that you have the right experience for the position.

The reverse-chronological format is the best way to achieve that objective since it allows you to list your work experience and achievements in reverse order. Employers who review your career history will see your most recent position right at the top of that section, with previous jobs listed in reverse chronological order.

Group distinct types of information into sections

Always remember that most recruiters and employers will only skim your resume to decide whether it’s worth reading. That means that you have only a few seconds to impress and inspire them to dig further into your resume details. Your job is to make sure that your resume can be easily skimmed by the reader – by grouping information into sections that are easy to find and digest.

Below are the essential resume sections that you’ll need to include in your VP of Sales resume:

Contact details

Place your contact information right at the top of the page to ensure that employers can quickly find the details they need to contact you for an interview – and eventual job offer. If they have to search for your phone number or email, they’ll be tempted to set your resume to the side and move on to the next candidate. Make sure that this section includes:

Your first and last name. You should use bold text several sizes larger than the rest of your contact details.

Your location. List your city and state, but omit more specific information like your home address .

Your phone number. This can be a landline or cell phone number; just make sure the line is working so that the employer can reach you when they call.

Email address. Use a professional email address. If the only email address that you have is some novelty address like “sillyguy@yahoo” then create a more professional account with a provider like Gmail.

LinkedIn URL, website. If you use LinkedIn or have your own professional site, you can include that website URL, too.

Resume headline

You’ll notice that we didn’t include your job title in that contact info section. The reason for that is simple: your desired job title can be used to greater effect if you include it in a resume headline right below those contact details. The goal here is to create a headline that summarizes your position and specialties in a way that grabs attention while differentiating you from other candidates.

For example:

Dynamic and Innovative Vice President of Sales and Proven Revenue Growth Driver

Obviously, that headline does more than just cite your job title. It also describes your leadership style while hinting at the type of value that you can offer to any company lucky enough to hire you! That’s the type of declaration that can make any hiring manager curious to learn more about you.

Resume summary

You should also create a resume summary paragraph to summarize your key skills, experiences, and quantifiable achievements. Like the headline, this section is designed to capture attention and inspire additional engagement from your reader. Simply create a three- to five-sentence paragraph that highlights your job title, years of experience, and notable skills. Also, include one or two examples that show the type of value you can offer.

Core competencies

Your core competencies section is a list of your most relevant skills and abilities. To create this list, start with a review of the job posting to identify all the core requirements that the employer is seeking. Those listed skills should form the core of your skill list.

You can find additional VP of Sales resume skills in the Key hard & soft skills for a Vice President of Sales section later in this guide.

List these skills in bullet point form to make the section easier for hiring managers to quickly skim. You should also format the section into either two or three columns to save space on your resume.

Finally, make sure that you include the exact words you find in that job posting. Those terms are often important keywords that your resume will need to include if you want to get past the applicant tracking system screening process.

You may also want to include one or more optional sections if they can bolster your qualifications. For example, you may choose to include a Career Achievements section that highlights your most impressive accomplishments. If you do, make sure that you include the same type of quantifiable results you included in your professional experience section.

When it comes to creating an impressive VP of Sales resume, there are certain formatting tips that you should follow. In this section, we will discuss the essential sections of a VP of Sales resume, the order of these sections, and the dos and don’ts of resume formatting.

The Essential Sections of a VP of Sales Resume

The following are the crucial sections that should be included in your VP of Sales resume:

1. Summary Statement

This section should provide a brief overview of your career goals, achievements, and skills that make you suitable for the role.

2. Professional Experience

This part of the resume summarizes your previous job roles, accomplishments, and major responsibilities as a VP of Sales.

3. Education

This section lists your highest degree, the name of the institution, and the year of graduation.

This section should list your key sales abilities, such as communication, leadership, negotiation, and organizational competence.

The Order of Sections in the Resume

The order that you present your VP of Sales resume sections is equally significant. Here is an example layout:

  • Summary statement
  • Professional experience

Make sure to use clean, readable fonts such as Times New Roman, Arial, or Calibri, with a legible font size of 10 to 12 points.

Dos and Don’ts of Resume Formatting

  • Use bullet points to emphasize job responsibilities, achievements, and skills.
  • Use action verbs at the starting of the bullet points to make each stand out more.
  • Quantify your achievements wherever possible, such as increasing sales by a certain percentage or reducing costs by a certain percentage.
  • Customize your resume for each job you apply for.
  • Keep your resume brief and to the point, ideally just one to two pages long.

Don’ts:

  • Don’t use images, graphics, or fancy fonts.
  • Avoid slang, abbreviations or technical terms that the company may not understand.
  • Don’t use passive language, for example, “responsibilities included,” rather than “I accomplished.”

By following these formatting tips, you can create a VP of Sales resume that stands out to employers and increases your chances of landing the job you want.

Crafting your Summary Statement

One of the most critical elements of your VP of Sales resume is the summary statement. This statement serves as an introduction to your profile and highlights your most important skills and experiences. A compelling and well-crafted summary statement can capture the attention of hiring managers, making them more likely to continue reading and ultimately invite you for an interview.

The purpose of a compelling and effective summary statement

The purpose of a summary statement is to provide a brief overview of your experience and skills as they relate to the VP of Sales position. It should be written in a way that immediately grabs the reader’s attention and convinces them that you are the right candidate for the job.

What to include and what to avoid in the summary statement

When crafting your summary statement, it’s essential to focus on your unique selling points. This means highlighting your most impressive achievements, experiences, and skills that make you stand out from other candidates. Avoid adding generic phrases and buzzwords that don’t add value or differentiate you from others. Also, make sure to keep your summary statement concise and easy-to-read, no longer than a few sentences.

In terms of the structure, it’s best to start with a compelling opening line that immediately grabs the reader’s attention. Follow this up with a brief highlight of your experience and skills, including any critical achievements. Finally, close with a statement of what you bring to the role and the impact you can make.

Examples of impactful summary statements for a VP of Sales

Here are some examples of summary statements for a VP of Sales that convey the skills and achievements employers are looking for:

Experienced VP of Sales with over 10 years of experience in driving revenue growth for high-growth startups and established enterprises alike. Consistently exceeded targets by creating and implementing dynamic sales strategies.

Proven VP of Sales with a track record of building high-performance sales teams that drive significant revenue growth. Skilled at developing and implementing sales processes, creating persuasive sales presentations, and building and nurturing relationships.

Your summary statement is a critical part of your VP of Sales resume. Invest the time to craft a compelling and impactful statement that highlights your unique selling points and immediately captures the reader’s attention. Remember, this is your chance to make a strong first impression and differentiate yourself from other applicants.

Work Experience Section

When it comes to presenting your work experience in a VP of Sales resume, there are a few best practices you should follow to ensure your work history stands out to potential employers.

First and foremost, make sure your experience is listed in reverse chronological order, starting with your most recent role. This approach allows hiring managers to see your most recent accomplishments and results first, which can create a stronger initial impression.

Next, focus on highlighting your achievements and results rather than just detailing your responsibilities. While it’s important to provide a brief overview of your job duties, the real value in your experience lies in the measurable impact you’ve had on your company and its bottom line.

To effectively highlight your achievements, use quantifiable metrics whenever possible. For example, instead of saying that you “improved sales numbers,” provide specific figures that show exactly how much you increased revenue or surpassed sales targets.

Finally, tailor your work experience section to each specific job application. While you don’t need to completely rewrite your resume for each job, consider emphasizing the skills and experiences that are most relevant to the position you’re applying for.

Here are a few examples of impactful work experience sections for a VP of Sales:

  • Successfully led a team of 20 salespeople, achieving a 25% increase in revenue year-over-year
  • Developed and implemented a sales strategy that led to a $5 million increase in annual sales
  • Led the launch of a new product line, resulting in a 30% increase in customer acquisition and retention rates

By following these best practices and providing specific examples of your achievements, you can create a compelling work experience section that showcases your skills and experience as a VP of Sales.

Education and Certifications

When crafting a VP of Sales resume, it is important to effectively present your education and certifications. These sections can help highlight the relevance of your skills and knowledge to the sales industry. Here are some tips to consider when building out these sections:

Presenting Your Education

  • Start with your most recent or highest level of education and work backward chronologically
  • Keep it brief – only list relevant degrees and include the name of the institution, degree type, and graduation date
  • If you didn’t finish a degree, you can still list the institution, major field of study, and any relevant coursework
  • Consider adding your GPA if it is above a 3.0
  • If you have more than one degree, prioritize the one most relevant to the sales industry

Highlighting Your Certifications

  • Similar to education, start with your most recent or highest level of certification
  • Include the name of the certification, the organization that granted it, and the date you received it
  • If you have multiple certifications, emphasize the ones that are most relevant to the VP of Sales role
  • Include any ongoing professional development or training that you are currently pursuing

When writing your education and certifications sections, make sure to emphasize the relevance of these credentials to the sales industry. Connect the dots between your coursework, certifications, and skills that are most valuable to the VP of Sales role. Use bullet points to break up blocks of text and make it easier for recruiters to scan your resume.

Here are some examples of impactful education and certification sections for a VP of Sales:

  • Master of Business Administration, University of California, Los Angeles, 2010
  • Bachelor of Science in Marketing, University of Southern California, 2006

The importance of a well-crafted skills and abilities section

  • Use bullet points to list your skills and abilities in a clear and concise manner.
  • Order the skills section so that your most important skills are listed first

A well-crafted skills and abilities section is essential for any VP of Sales resume. The section helps to clearly communicate your skills and abilities, and highlight your strengths as a candidate. Remember to tailor the skills and abilities section to the role you are applying for and emphasize the skills that make you stand out.

Industry-Specifics Section

When applying for a Vice President of Sales position, it’s crucial to understand the industry-specific requirements for the job. Employers want to see that you have a deep understanding of the industry, and that you will be able to tailor your skills and experience to meet their needs.

To start, research the industry you’re applying to work in. This will help you identify the key skills and experience needed for the position. Additionally, look for industry-specific keywords in job postings and company websites, and include them in your resume.

Consider including an Industry-Specific section in your resume that highlights your knowledge and experience in the sector. This section is an opportunity to demonstrate to employers that you understand their industry and the challenges they face, and you’re well-equipped to tackle them.

Here are some examples of what to include in an Industry-Specifics section for a VP of Sales:

Health Care Sales

  • Expert knowledge of regulations and compliance standards in the healthcare industry

  • Proven success in driving growth in healthcare sales environments

Taking the time to research the industry and including an Industry-Specifics section in your resume can give you a competitive edge and demonstrate your value to potential employers.

References Section

When it comes to your VP of Sales resume, the inclusion of references is a topic that requires careful consideration. Here are the pros and cons of including references on your resume:

  • Including references on your resume can demonstrate your confidence in your work and your ability to provide strong endorsements from past colleagues, managers, and clients.
  • Having references readily available can streamline the hiring process and increase the chances of getting hired, as it saves time for the employer to conduct their own reference checks separately.
  • Including references can take up valuable space on your resume that could be used to highlight your relevant experience and achievements.
  • Including references also puts your references’ information out there for the world to see, which they may not be comfortable with.

If you decide to include references on your VP of Sales resume, here are some tips to effectively present them:

  • Provide a separate section labeled “References” with the same font style and size as the rest of the document.
  • Include the name, job title, company and contact information of each reference.
  • Ensure each reference is aware that their information will be included and is comfortable being contacted.
  • If possible, tailor your list of references to the company or position you are applying for.

Alternatively, there are other ways to provide references without including them on your resume. Here are some options:

  • Provide references upon request: Include a statement at the end of your resume stating that references are available upon request.
  • Provide a separate references document: Create a separate document with your references and make it available upon request.
  • Use LinkedIn recommendations: Include a link to your LinkedIn profile, where potential employers can view your recommendations from colleagues and clients.

The decision to include references on your VP of Sales resume should be made on a case-by-case basis. Consider the pros and cons, and decide what will work best for you and the particular job you are applying for. If you do include references, make sure to effectively present them in a separate section on your resume. Alternatively, there are other ways to provide references, such as upon request or through LinkedIn recommendations, that may also be effective.

Tailoring Your VP of Sales Resume for Different Employment Opportunities

One of the most important aspects of job hunting is tailoring your resume to fit the specific requirements of the job listing you’re applying for. This is especially true for VP of Sales positions, where the competition can be fierce and the expectations are high.

Here are some tips on how to tailor your VP of Sales Resume to meet the requirements of different job listings:

Research the Company and the Job Posting

Before starting to modify your resume, it’s essential to research the company and the job posting thoroughly. Try to get a good understanding of the company culture, values, and goals, and tailor your resume to reflect those. Also, make sure to read the job posting carefully and note the skills and qualifications required for the position.

Highlight Your Relevant Skills

Once you’ve identified the required skills and qualifications, make sure to highlight the ones that you possess. Use the job posting as a guide to find the most relevant skills to include in your resume. For example, if the job posting emphasizes experience in developing sales strategies, make sure to highlight similar experiences you’ve had in the past.

Customize Your Objective Statement

Your objective statement is the first thing that recruiters will see when reviewing your resume, so it’s essential to customize it for each job listing. Use the job posting to identify what the company is looking for, and tailor your objective statement to reflect that.

Emphasize Your Achievements

One of the best ways to stand out from the crowd is to emphasize your achievements in previous roles. Use specific numbers and data to showcase how you’ve helped increase revenue or grow the sales team. For example, you could highlight how you’ve increased revenue by a certain percentage or how you’ve helped close major deals.

Use Actionable Language

Using actionable language helps to showcase your accomplishments and emphasizes your leadership qualities. Use words like “led,” “initiated,” and “managed” to show how you’ve led teams and implemented successful sales strategies.

Customizing your VP of Sales resume to fit the specific requirements of different job listings can greatly increase your chances of getting hired. With these tips in mind, you’ll be able to stand out from the competition and showcase your skills and qualifications to potential employers.

Common Mistakes to Avoid When Writing a Vice President Of Sales Resume

In this competitive job market, employers receive an average of 180 applications for each open position. To process these resumes, companies often rely on automated applicant tracking systems, which can sift through resumes and eliminate the least qualified applicants. If your resume is among the few that make it past these bots, it must still impress the recruiter or hiring manager. With so many applications coming in, recruiters typically give each resume only 5 seconds of their attention before deciding whether to discard it. Considering this, it's best to avoid including any distracting information on your application that could cause it to be thrown away. To help make sure your resume stands out, review the list below of what you should not include on your job application.

  • Not including a cover letter. A cover letter is a great way to explain why you are the best candidate for the job and why you want the position.
  • Using too much jargon. Hiring managers do not want to read a resume full of technical terms that they do not understand.
  • Omitting important details. Make sure to include your contact information, educational background, job history, and any relevant skills and experiences.
  • Using a generic template. Take the time to customize your resume to the job you are applying for. This will show the employer that you are serious about the position.
  • Spelling and grammar errors. Always double-check your resume for typos, spelling mistakes, and grammar errors.
  • Focusing too much on duties. Make sure to include accomplishments and successes to show the employer that you are a great candidate.

3. Next, create a sales vice president skills section on your resume

Your resume's skills section should include the most important keywords from the job description, as long as you actually have those skills. If you haven't started your job search yet, you can look over resumes to get an idea of what skills are the most important.

Here are some tips to keep in mind when writing your resume's skills section:

  • Include 6-12 skills, in bullet point form
  • List mostly hard skills ; soft skills are hard to test
  • Emphasize the skills that are most important for the job

Hard skills are generally more important to hiring managers because they relate to on-the-job knowledge and specific experience with a certain technology or process.

Soft skills are also valuable, as they're highly transferable and make you a great person to work alongside, but they're impossible to prove on a resume.

Example of skills to include on an sales vice president resume

Healthcare is the maintenance or improvement of a person's health by the diagnosis and treatment of a person's injury, illness, or any other disease. Healthcare is a basic necessity of human life and is the responsibility of the country's government to ensure that each person gets healthcare. Providing healthcare is the job of certified health professionals that includes doctors, surgeons, nurses, and other physicians. Pharmaceutical companies, hospitals, dentistry, therapy, and health training all come under healthcare. Healthcare plays a vital role in the country's economy and its development.

Customer service is the process of offering assistance to all the current and potential customers -- answering questions, fixing problems, and providing excellent service. The main goal of customer service is to build a strong relationship with the customers so that they keep coming back for more business.

CRM stands for Customer relationship management and it is a complete process through which a business or organization monitors and administers its interactions with the customers. A process in which large amounts of data are collected through marketing via a company's website, polls, surveys, and other social media applications. The basic goal of CRM is to target the right audience for their product, and then fulfill their needs, to increase the sales and revenue of the company.

Business development is the ideas or initiatives that work to make business work better. Selling, advertising, product development, supply chain management, and vendor management are only a few of the divisions involved with it. There is still a lot of networking, negotiating, forming alliances, and trying to save money. The goals set for business development guide and coordinate with all of these various operations and sectors.

The process of strengthening the relationship between a company and client is called account management. Effective account management has two key objectives, one is to retain loyal customers and the second one is to help the company grow by creating connections with new customers.

4. List your sales vice president experience

The most important part of any resume for a sales vice president is the experience section. Recruiters and hiring managers expect to see your experience listed in reverse chronological order, meaning that you should begin with your most recent experience and then work backwards.

Don't just list your job duties below each job entry. Instead, make sure most of your bullet points discuss impressive achievements from your past positions. Whenever you can, use numbers to contextualize your accomplishments for the hiring manager reading your resume.

It's okay if you can't include exact percentages or dollar figures. There's a big difference even between saying "Managed a team of sales vice presidents" and "Managed a team of 6 sales vice presidents over a 9-month project. "

Most importantly, make sure that the experience you include is relevant to the job you're applying for. Use the job description to ensure that each bullet point on your resume is appropriate and helpful.
