essay on kindness

Importance of Kindness

Kindness towards nature, animals and other people has the ability to transform the world and make it a beautiful place for living. But, it is also important to remember that kindness towards you is also essential for personal growth.

Kindness is basically being polite, compassionate and thoughtful. Every religion and faith teaches its followers to be kind. Most importantly, kindness must not limit to humans but also to every living creature.

Even nature has its own way of showing kindness. For instance, the trees grow fruits for us and provide us with shade. One must not see kindness as a core value but as a fundamental behavioural element. When you are kind to your loved ones, you create a stable base.

As people are becoming more self-centred today, we must learn kindness. We must try to integrate it into ourselves. You might not know how a small act of kindness can bring about a change in someone’s life. So, be kind always.

Kindness Always Wins

There is no doubt that kindness always wins and it has been proven time and again by people. Sid is a greedy man who does not share his wealth with anyone, not even his family members.

He also does not pay his workers well. One day, he loses his bag of gold coins and loses his temper. Everyone helps him out to search for it but no one finds it. Finally, his worker’s little son finds the bag.

Upon checking the bag, he sees all the coins are there. But, his greed makes him play a trick on the poor worker. He claims that there were more coins in the bag and the worker stole them.

The issue goes to the court and the judge confirms from Sid whether his bag had more coins to which he agrees. So, the judge rules out that as Sid’s bag had more coins , the bag which the worker’s son found is not his.

Therefore, the bag gets handed to the worker as no one else claims it. Consequently, you see how the worker’s son act of kindness won and paid him well. On the other hand, how Sid’s greediness resulted in his loss only.

Kindness Essay

Kindness is a valuable trait that can have a positive impact on our lives and the lives of those around us. It can help to build strong relationships, reduce stress and anxiety, and improve our physical health. However, it's important to remember that being kind can be difficult at times, and it takes practice and patience to make it a consistent part of our daily lives. Here are a few sample essays on kindness.

Kindness Essay

100 Word Essay On Kindness

There has been a saying that “be kind and do kind” means that be soulfully and mindfully kind so that you can do. Kindness is a type of behaviour that is marked by acts of generosity, consideration, rendering assistance or concern for others without expecting any praise or reward in return for the same.

Kindness is one of the main topics in the Bible, and it is a topic which is well taught and praised by every religion in the world. Nietzsche has said kindness and love are considered to be the "most curative herbs and agents in human intercourse". Not only this but there have been practitioners who have identified kindness as one of the most beautiful things to happen to mankind.

200 Word Essay On Kindness

Kindness and love are closely intertwined, as one often leads to the other. When we act out of generosity and do something good for others, we are likely to receive similar or even greater acts of kindness in return. This is the principle of karma, where we reap what we sow. By being kind to others, we are able to empathise and put ourselves in their shoes, and in doing so, we are able to make a positive impact on their lives.

The practice of kindness has many benefits, not just for the recipients, but also for the giver. It can help to build friendships, bring joy and make life more fulfilling. In a world where competition can often be fierce, it is important to teach the younger generation the importance of kindness and generosity. By fostering these qualities in schools, we can help to create a kinder, more compassionate society.

There are countless books, articles and other resources that explore the topic of kindness in depth. But despite this, society as a whole has yet to fully embrace a culture of kindness on a broader level. By making a conscious effort to be kind to others, we can work together to make the world a better place for all.

500 Word Essay On Kindness

Kindness is a powerful force that has the ability to change lives, both for the giver and the receiver. It is defined as the act of being considerate and caring towards others, and it encompasses a wide range of behaviors, from small acts of generosity to large acts of selflessness.

One of the benefits of being kind is that it can help to build strong and meaningful relationships. When we are kind to others, we demonstrate that we care about them and that we value their well-being. This can help to create a sense of trust and understanding, which are essential ingredients for any healthy relationship.

Another benefit of kindness is that it can help to reduce stress and anxiety. Studies have shown that acts of kindness can trigger the release of feel-good hormones in the brain, such as oxytocin and serotonin, which can help to improve our mood and reduce feelings of stress.

Additionally, kindness can also have a positive impact on our physical health. Research has shown that people who engage in acts of kindness on a regular basis have a lower risk of developing certain chronic conditions, such as heart disease and diabetes.

One way to make kindness a regular practice is to set small and achievable goals for ourselves. For example, we can make a commitment to perform one act of kindness per day, or to make a conscious effort to be more understanding and empathetic towards others. Another way is to remind ourselves that kindness is not only about grand gestures, but also about small actions that can have a big impact on someone's life.

Personal Experience

I remember the day when a severe storm hit my village, leaving many of the houses damaged and people homeless. As I walked around the village, I saw the destruction and the despair on the faces of my fellow villagers. I knew that I had to do something to help.

I rallied my friends and together we set out to repair the houses and provide shelter for those who had lost theirs. It was hard work, but we were determined to help as many people as possible. We worked tirelessly, through the rain and the wind, never once complaining.

As we went from house to house, I could see the gratitude and appreciation on the faces of the people we were helping. It was a small act of kindness, but it made such a big difference in their lives.

Through our efforts, the village slowly began to recover, and the people were able to rebuild their homes and their lives. But the kindness we had shown was not forgotten. We had shown the villagers that even in the darkest of times, there is always hope, and that through kindness and compassion, we can overcome any obstacle.

From that day on, I felt proud of my actions, and I realized the power of kindness. I had shown that one person's kindness can make a huge impact in the lives of many. I felt a sense of accomplishment and happiness that I was able to bring people together and make a difference.

The Impact of Kindness

The ripple effect of a single act of kindness can be far-reaching. It not only uplifts the recipient’s spirits, but also positively influences the benefactor’s psychological wellbeing. Studies suggest that kindness stimulates the production of serotonin, a neurotransmitter that induces feelings of happiness and contentment.

In a society often marred by strife and discord, acts of kindness serve as a potent antidote. They foster social cohesion, promote empathy and understanding, and counteract the detrimental effects of stress, aggression, and antisocial behavior.

Kindness as a Learned Behavior

Kindness is not an innate trait, but a learned behavior. It requires conscious effort and practice to cultivate. Educational institutions play a crucial role in promoting kindness, instilling in students the values of compassion, empathy, and respect for others.

In conclusion, acts of kindness, no matter how small, have the power to make a significant difference in the world. As we navigate the complexities of life, let us remember that kindness costs nothing, but its value is immeasurable. It is the cornerstone of a harmonious society and a testament to the strength of the human spirit.

500 Words Essay on Act of Kindness

Kindness and Psychological Well-being

The act of kindness has significant implications for psychological well-being. It can increase happiness, reduce stress, and improve mental health. Furthermore, kindness can help to build self-esteem and a positive self-image, as it allows individuals to feel valued and appreciated.

Kindness and Physical Health

Despite the form it takes, the act of kindness always has the potential to make a significant difference in someone’s life.

The Ripple Effect of Kindness

Kindness creates a ripple effect. When we are kind to someone, they are more likely to be kind to others. This cycle of kindness can spread throughout a community, creating a culture of empathy and respect. Moreover, kindness can inspire others to act similarly, thus perpetuating the cycle.

In conclusion, kindness is a powerful force that can transform individuals and societies. It has psychological, physical, and societal benefits, making it an essential aspect of human interaction. By practicing kindness, we can create a more compassionate and understanding world. As college students, we are in a unique position to foster this culture of kindness. By incorporating kindness into our daily lives, we can create a ripple effect that extends beyond our immediate environment, contributing to a more harmonious and empathetic society.

Paragraph on kindness – 100 words

Kindness in the academic realm fosters a supportive and encouraging environment, essential for the growth and development of students. In India, where the educational journey is highly valued, acts of kindness among students, such as helping peers understand complex subjects or sharing resources, play a significant role in building a cohesive community. Teachers also contribute by offering extra guidance and motivation, showing that kindness is not just about acts of charity but also about empowering others to succeed. Such a culture of kindness within schools and colleges nurtures empathy, cooperation, and a positive mindset, laying a strong foundation for students’ future endeavors.

Paragraph on kindness – 150 words

In the context of Indian education, kindness acts as a catalyst for academic excellence and emotional well-being. It involves students and teachers alike in creating a nurturing environment where everyone feels valued and supported. Whether it’s through tutoring classmates, sharing educational materials, or simply offering words of encouragement, these acts of kindness contribute to a more inclusive and productive learning atmosphere.

Furthermore, initiatives like community service projects and charity drives integrated into school activities highlight the importance of kindness beyond the classroom, teaching students about social responsibility and the impact of their actions on a broader scale. This approach not only enhances academic performance but also instills virtues of compassion and empathy in students, preparing them to be thoughtful and responsible citizens of society. Such an environment encourages students to excel not only academically but also in their personal development.

Paragraph on kindness – 200 words

Kindness within the Indian educational system is pivotal, extending beyond mere academic assistance to embody empathy, respect, and understanding among students and educators. This multifaceted approach to kindness involves collaborative projects, peer mentoring, and respectful interactions that enrich the learning experience. Schools and colleges often promote kindness through various programs, including volunteer work, environmental campaigns, and cultural exchanges, encouraging students to look beyond their textbooks and contribute positively to their communities.

Additionally, educators play a crucial role by modeling kindness, whether through acknowledging students’ efforts, offering constructive feedback, or supporting students through personal challenges. Such actions not only build a supportive academic environment but also teach students valuable life lessons about cooperation, perseverance, and the importance of community.

In a country as diverse as India, where education is both a privilege and a challenge for many, fostering a culture of kindness can bridge gaps, overcome barriers, and inspire students to achieve their fullest potential while being mindful of the world around them. Ultimately, instilling the value of kindness in educational settings prepares students for a future where they can lead with compassion and make meaningful contributions to society.

Paragraph on kindness – 250 words

Kindness is a universal virtue that plays a significant role in shaping the character and future of students. In the Indian context, where the education system emphasizes not just academic excellence but also moral values, kindness becomes an essential part of a student’s life. It is about being considerate, compassionate, and helping others without expecting anything in return. Kindness in academics goes beyond just sharing notes with classmates; it involves supporting peers through their challenges, respecting teachers and staff, and contributing positively to the school environment.

Promoting kindness in schools can lead to a more inclusive and supportive learning atmosphere, where every student feels valued and motivated to achieve their best. Activities like group projects, peer mentoring programs, and community service initiatives encourage students to practice kindness and understand its impact on others. These activities not only enhance academic skills but also develop empathy, a crucial trait for personal and professional success.

In Indian schools, festivals and celebrations often include aspects of giving and compassion, teaching students the importance of kindness in cultural and social contexts. By integrating kindness into the curriculum, educators can help students realize that success is not measured solely by grades but also by the positive influence they have on the lives of others. This holistic approach to education fosters a generation of thoughtful, caring, and responsible individuals, prepared to contribute positively to society.

Paragraph on kindness – 300 words

In the diverse and vibrant landscape of India, kindness within academic settings holds a pivotal role in nurturing young minds and building a compassionate society. The Indian education system, rooted in the rich tapestry of cultural and ethical values, places a strong emphasis on developing moral virtues alongside academic achievements. Kindness, a fundamental trait, is encouraged among students from a young age, fostering a sense of empathy, cooperation, and mutual respect within the educational community.

Schools across India implement various programs and initiatives to instill kindness in students. These range from incorporating moral science classes that discuss ethical dilemmas and the importance of kindness in everyday life to organizing community service and social outreach programs that allow students to apply these values in real-world settings. Such initiatives not only enrich the students’ academic experience but also prepare them to be compassionate leaders of tomorrow.

Moreover, Indian educators often emphasize the power of kind words and actions in creating a supportive learning environment. Encouraging students to help their peers, whether by assisting with studies, participating in inclusive activities, or simply offering a listening ear, cultivates an atmosphere where kindness becomes the foundation of the school culture. This approach not only enhances students’ emotional intelligence but also significantly improves their academic performance by creating a stress-free and positive learning environment.

Celebrating acts of kindness, recognizing students who go above and beyond to help others, and integrating stories of compassion from India’s rich history and diverse cultures into the curriculum further reinforce the importance of this virtue. By doing so, schools aim to develop well-rounded individuals who value kindness just as much as academic success, ensuring that the future leaders of India carry forward the legacy of empathy and compassion.

Acts of Kindness: Narrative Writing

Acts of Kindness

David Werner

December 1, 2013

Floyd, Lloyd, Elwood, Woodrow, and David are not historical figures, except in their native Ithaca, N.Y.; but David was my father the others my Uncles – all part of the generation who saved the world in WWII.

They were all just kids, some underage, when they volunteered for the Army Air Corp. and piloted everything from the B-17 and B-29 to the P-47 and P-51.  They flew more than 25 missions a piece as pilots and co-pilots; which far exceeded the Air Corp. standards.  The mortality rates of pilots jumped after just thirteen missions and it was almost a given that pilots flying more than 25 missions would not return.

In my book they were heroes and, as a kid, I remember hearing some of the stories.  Being a kid I especially liked the ones about them “pissing in their pants” as anti-aircraft fire was going off all around them.  It was funny to them too, since all five survived, but they never glamorized the war or thought of themselves as heroes.  There was a job to be done and they did it.

After the war they did what that generation was expected to do.  They came home, married, started families, and worked to support their families.  Even in peacetime, there was a job to be done and they did it.

My father, as many of that generation, was not openly emotional or affectionate.  He loved us and would do anything for his family, but in his own very quiet and humble way.

The only time I ever saw him break down was when my mother died.  He loved her so much and was so paralyzed by grief he could not function.  I was thirteen at the time, and the oldest, so it fell upon me make all of the funeral arrangements and to help in any way I could for the next month or so.  This time, there was a job to be done so I did it.

My father was capable of many acts of sacrifice and kindness.  Of course he never told me about them but I still hear stories about him today.

About a month ago I was standing in line at the pharmacy to pick up a prescription.  When it was my turn, I simply said “Pickup for Werner.”

This very old woman standing next to me turned and asked, “Are you Blanche’s boy?”  I told her I was and she told me how close she had been to my parents and that my father was the greatest man who ever lived.

By now, the rest of the crowd in line edged a bit closer to eavesdrop.

She went on to tell stories about my mother and father and finally asked me how I felt about my grandmother.

My grandmother was somewhat of a strict and overbearing woman who could cause a great deal of misery if she wanted to.

Once this woman, Helen, was satisfied she was not going to offend me, she almost yelled out in the store, “That Ethel could be a bitch!  Do you know your grandfather had to stop for a shot and a beer before he could go home and face her?”

After that there was no stopping her and she had certainly piqued my curiosity.  I, and the entire audience in the store, learned that one of my Uncles had fathered a number of illegitimate children both in Europe and here after the war, I apparently had numerous first cousins I was never aware of, my grandfather had a long term affair supposedly because of my grandmother, and my family history was filled with more than a few black sheep.

Now everyone, including the pharmacist, was waiting to hear what was coming next.

Helen became quiet and more introspective.  “You know,” she began, “Ethel (my mother’s mother) became very ill a few years after your mother died.”

I did remember she had a massive heart attack on the day my mother died and she was unable to attend the funeral.

“I think it was after you left for college, your father didn’t think he could care for her anymore so he was going to put her in a nursing home.”

This part I did not remember.  My grandmother was never in a nursing home.

“I remember that day,” Helen continued, “The day she was going in.  I helped your Dad get her into the car and saw them drive off.  Do you know what your father did?  He drove in through the gates of the nursing home.  He drove right past the entrance, continued around the circle, and came right back home.  He cared for Ethel for the rest of her life.”

Similar to many stories about my father, I had never heard this one before.

Growing up he would always tell us, “You are what you do, not what you say.”  He defined himself by that.  There was always a job to be done and he did it.

This is the beginning of a series of essays using the nine writing patterns of narrative , exemplification , compare/contrast , description , definition , process analysis , cause/effect , classification and division , and argumentation/persuasion .

Narrative, or narration , “wraps” the issue or thesis around a character or story.  “Acts of Kindness” is an example.  I could have written a well-researched essay about various and random acts of kindness; but which would have the desired emotional impact on an audience?  The truth is, I don’t know but I do know the audience is the final authority in terms of our work.

The writing pattern of description uses words to stimulate the senses and have the reader paint a mental picture of the scene.  Exemplification uses specific and detailed examples to clarify the thesis or argument.  Process analysis shows the audience how things work or how to do something.

To explain similarities and differences, we use the writing pattern of compare and contrast .  We spend most of our lives just trying to figure things out; and that’s when we use cause and effect analysis .  Definition gives new meaning to something misunderstood or previously unappreciated.  We use classification and division to group some things together and divide others into smaller categories.  And finally, we use argumentation and persuasion to find common ground with an opponent.

This Effective Writing Podcast discusses the role of Audience and Purpose in writing.

For the writer, these are the tools in our toolkit. For the reader, again the final authority, we can better serve them.  I ask my students at the beginning of each term to give us their definition of “ Effective Communication .”  They say things such as, “To better express myself,” “two people talking,” or “arguing back-and-forth.”

The real definition of Effective Communication is simply the art of being understood .

It’s not the audience’s job to figure out what we’re trying to “say.”  It’s our job to be understood.  And when we write an essay or story such as “Acts of Kindness,” it is not our job to show reality.  For most of us, the reality of our daily lives can be somewhat unpleasant.  No, it’s the writer’s job to show an interpretation of reality.  Let’s show the world what it can be like .

3 Minute Speech on Importance of Kindness in English for Students

Good Morning everyone, Today I am going to share my views on the topic “Importance of kindness”.

There is a great saying that Kindness is doing what you can, where you are, with what you have. It also means loving yourself enough to love those around you.

Kindness  means to be good and compassionate to people around us. It may include speaking politely, being supportive, helping people, and motivating them. Kind words or little positive actions are enough to make someone happy. It is a very powerful tool that can bring a positive change in our society and in our lives. It is a universal language that crosses all the boundaries and connects hearts.

By embracing kindness, we not only enrich our own lives but also contribute to a more compassionate and harmonious world. A kind and a world full of compassion is the need of an hour.

3 paragraph essay about kindness

Paragraph on Kindness

When you are kind to anyone who needs your help, you feel good because you thus could bring a smile to the other person’s face. Any act of kindness is appreciated. It need not be a great act; it could even be a small deed. Kindness or being kindly is an attitude. If you are kindly, you will actually feel for the other person with your heart, and respond positively. This is what empathy is all about. For all acts of kindness, there is a reciprocal gratitude in the person who has graciously received your kindness.

You may show your kindness to your family members, friends, neighbours, classmates or anyone who genuinely needs help. When you show kindness you feel a sense of fulfillment in your heart. But there is a word of caution. Don’t get deceived by one who falsely seeks your kindness. Such a person will only dupe you. So be generous with your kindliness to those who need help genuinely.

When I fall sick she nurses me back to health. I can bank on her at any time. She is the person from whom I have learnt what it is to be kind.

My teachers in school are also kind to me. When I do not understand a concept or topic they do not scold me or frown upon me; instead they are patient and caring and teach me. My classmates are also friendly with me. When I am absent from school they are kind and help me by sharing with me what has been taught in class and the homework that I have missed.

I too try to be kind to those who are in need of help. I help my sister if she falls sick. When she has a craft or model preparation assignment I help her with it by getting her the material from the shop. I also help my younger brother in his studies.

I help my friends and classmates too in whatever way possible. I am also helpful to the elderly. If an elderly person boards the bus I am traveling on, I offer her or him my seat.

Paragraph on Kindness 5 (300 Words)

Kindness is a quality that human beings show in various ways. We can be kind to human beings who need our help. We can be kindly to our family members, relatives, friends and neighbours. We can also be kind to other life forms like dogs, cats and other pets and domesticated animals, and to wildlife like birds and animals.

Not causing hurt is also kindness. When we hurt someone by word or deed we cause them pain. We can avoid harming or hurting others, and instead be kind and loving to them. Kindness is in the way we speak to others and in the way we help others to reduce their troubles.

When we help anyone, with our heart, to ease the person of pain and trouble, we are being kind. When we are kind to anyone, we are happy because we bring a smile to the other person’s face. They in turn feel grateful for the kindness that they have graciously received.

I am always touched by the kindness of my aunt. She runs an orphanage, and is caring towards and concerned about all the children who she looks after. She is a kindly person, and, in turn, all the children love her very much.

I try to be kind to those I live with and those I meet and interact with. When any of my family members has any trouble I try to help them. If they get sick I try to help them in whatever way I can so that they may feel better. At school if any of my classmates gets hurt on the playground I take her or him to the nursing room at school.

While on the road if I find an injured bird or animal I try to get help for the creature.

Paragraph on Kindness 6 (350 Words)

There are many ways in which we can show our kindness to others. We can show it through word and deed. We can also show kindness in thought by wishing others well and praying for them from our hearts.

Kindness describes the quality of the human heart. One who is kind is called kind-hearted. By being kind we feel happy. If we can reduce the trouble or suffering of anyone, and make the person feel happy, it is a joy to us. This is what makes us happy when we do any deed of kindness.

One who is kind is empathetic, and feels for those who are in distress or pain. A person who is kind can help others and reduce their sufferings. Kindness requires generosity. One who is kind will share, if only little, whatever they have.

We can be kind to our family members. My sister and brother, both elder to me, are always kind to me. They show a great deal of love and care. If I fall sick they nurse me to good health. Likewise, when I have difficulties in my studies, they always help me. I am very grateful to them for their love and kindness. I also try to help my sister and brother in whatever way I can.

My friends at school are also kind and helpful. If I hurt myself on the playground my friends take me to the medical room to get me first aid. I am also kind to my friends and classmates. If any of my classmates misses school and needs help, I share my notes with her. My teachers are also kind to me. When I cannot understand a topic they are patient and teach me till I can understand the concept.

We can be kind with other life forms too. I keep bowls of water on the verandah of my home for the birds in the summers. I also place grains and cereals for the birds to eat. The birds feel welcome and come in flocks. And I love to see the happy birds feeding and singing.

Paragraph on Kindness 7 (400 Words)

We see kindness all around us. We find God as the greatest power and the creator of the universe who is kind to all of his creation. We find kindness as a quality in all of God’s creation too. We see people who are kind. We find trees, the sun and other life forms too being kind.

Everything in nature shows kindness by its very existence. Trees and plants offer us so much. Our life depends on the trees and vegetation around us. Likewise, the sun gives warmth, light and energy all around Planet Earth. Its very life is to offer us these bounties on which life hinges.

Kindness is the quality of sharing and caring. When we can share what we have with others, and care for the well being of others we are showing kindness. Similarly, if we feel for others when they are suffering, and try to reduce their pain and trouble by helping them in whatever way we can we are being kind.

If we, as human beings, are greedy and selfish, and show hatred, jealousy and anger, we are far from being kind. Our deeds, words and thoughts then reveal only unkindness. Kindness is an important quality for life to flourish.

We can show kindness to all those around us. We can be kind with our family, relatives, friends, neighbours, and anyone whom we may encounter whether on the street, in the shop or on the train.

An act of kindness need not be something great; any small deed of kindness can help someone who is in misery or agony. And it can bring cheer to the person who feels relief.

We can show kindness to our siblings who we grow up with. Instead of fighting and quarreling, we can show love and care. Kindness can thus bring an environment of positivity.

Similarly, at school we can be kind to our friends and classmates. It will engender an atmosphere conducive to learning. If anyone faces difficulty in their studies we can be kind and help them if we can. If anyone gets hurt on the playground or in the laboratory, we can get them first aid.

We may help victims when a disaster or calamity hits the country like a flood or earthquake. It shows our kindness and large-heartedness. We may donate what we have like food, clothes or money for the relief of victims.

Reflection: Dartmouth Essays That Worked

One writer looks back on her admissions process in light of the dartmouth’s new book, “50 dartmouth application essays that worked.”.

Admissions Reflection Graphic 24S.png

Five years ago, I began my Common Application essay with the following sentence: “To quote Ferris Bueller, ‘Life moves pretty fast. If you don’t stop and look around once in a while, you could miss it.’ I don’t intend to miss my life.” Half a decade later, those words still ring true.

Any college was taking a chance when they admitted a girl who quoted a film famous for encouraging students to play hooky. Not only did I open with this line, I hammered the point home as I described my disillusionment with valuing academic learning over personal experience — I was done running on the high school hamster wheel. When people ask me what essay got me into Dartmouth, I usually respond, “An essay about having a really fun summer.” While those words are true, there’s a deeper moral to the story — as incredible as Dartmouth’s academic resources are, and as academically rigorous as my high school had been, I wanted to learn outside of the classroom, to learn by doing, to learn from my friends. “As much as I value my academic identity and as far as my passion for learning goes, my interpersonal relationships teach me just as much,” I wrote.

I was honestly surprised when Dartmouth accepted me in April 2020. I had been deferred early decision, and the last student who had gotten into Dartmouth from my public Florida high school was a cross-country recruit in 2016. Like tens of thousands of high school seniors, I had the grades, test scores and extracurriculars, but I was full of self-doubt. I was also completely burnt out. Was I really “Ivy League material”? I certainly didn’t feel it. Looking over my statistics, I was just another data point. Not Ellie Anderson, but applicant 8,677.

My “Why Dartmouth?”  and supplement essays allowed me to make my case. I crafted three versions of the former, and I could have kept going. I labored over my words carefully, drafting response after response, but it was challenging only having 250 words to respond, in some form, to a prompt that every Dartmouth applicant has read: “It is, Sir … a small college. And yet, there are those who love it!” Other than the encouraging words and flamboyant edits from my high school English teacher, I didn’t know if they were any good. Where to begin …

I would have loved to understand what makes an admissions essay compelling when I was in the throes of applying to college. Recently, The Dartmouth published “50 Dartmouth Application Essays That Worked,” a compilation of successful admissions essays. Looking through this collection, I felt like I was stepping back into my 17-year-old self. The selection includes essays featuring many of the qualities Dartmouth seems to be looking for in its students, or at least those I’ve found in my friends: compassion, curiosity, humility and a collaborative spirit.

The book opens with essays about environment and nature before progressing to the expected categories: academic interest, arts, heritage, identity, sports and, of course, “miscellaneous.”

A few stories grabbed me for their honesty, especially one that begins, “I have a complicated relationship with the truth.” I was hooked — it was real and raw. Her father suffers from bipolar disorder even though, to the outside world, nothing appears to be wrong. She has a secret too — she’s seeing a girl. How is one supposed to apply to college when their entire world is being torn apart, “standing in the middle of the bridge and setting fire to both ends,” as she says. But she learns a valuable lesson — to live her own truth, not anyone else’s.

When I was applying to colleges, I was given the following advice: “Don’t make your admissions essay a sob story.” But this essay certainly isn’t a pity party, which proves you can be honest and address your difficulties in the span of a few hundred words. These kinds of essays instead place their writers’ most beautiful strengths and flaws on full display.

Another such essay begins, “My feet live in infamy.” Yes, you can write your Common Application essay about your gnarled and calloused feet. Although the story begins with an anecdote of “ugly” feet, it becomes so much more — a toe-centric reflection. As the writer’s skin became thicker, she found her voice as well. She comes out of her shell in high school, learning to speak up after several tumultuous adolescent years as an introvert. By the end, she’s finally ready to bear her infamous feet and use her voice.

A deep current of intellectual curiosity runs across the essays, too. I laughed when I read a story about an applicant playing Super Mario Bros on a childhood road trip. The writer makes an in-game blunder, sending Mario hurdling into a turtle. “It was then that the terrible realization that curled my six-year-old toes hit me: Mario would return to play again, but when I die, I will not,” they said. What could have been a decade-long existential spiral instead drove the writer to philosophy and math, where they found solace in understanding the world rather than cowering at the unknown.

These writers are brave — both for sharing their stories to the black-box admissions panel and for allowing us readers a peek years later. On a campus where we often interact in passing “Hey, what’s up”-isms, reading the diverse selection of essays has grounded me once more in an understanding of what makes Dartmouth, Dartmouth. Students here are radically courageous in their quests for knowledge, acts of kindness and pursuits of greatness. In these essays, 650 words no longer looks limiting but becomes the etchings of a beautiful cohort.

After re-reading my own essay alongside those published, it struck me. As a 17-year-old sending off a piece of yourself to a nebulous online portal, it can be difficult to envision your future — your story is a moment in time caught in between all that you’ve been and all that you hope to become. I’m asking myself this question again as I look forward to my senior year at Dartmouth and re-read my ambitions and fears from the essay I penned in 2019. It’s been a lot of laughing at my naïvete, cringing at a heavy-handed application of adjectives and finding pride in my values.

Not only is this book a tool for Dartmouth applicants, but it’s a time capsule from the Class of 2023 to the Class of 2026, whose essays are included. This is who we were at 17. Looking back at my essay, so much has changed between now and then. How could it have not? But I see the seeds of who I’ve become in my essay, like an incantation: “I learn to understand others and to understand myself.”

7 Best Ways to Shorten an Essay

7 Best Ways to Shorten an Essay

  • Smodin Editorial Team
  • Published: May 14, 2024

Are you removing a lot of words and paragraphs from your essay but still not seeing the word count budge? Whether you’re meeting a strict word count or refining your message, reducing your essay’s length without sacrificing content quality can be challenging.

Luckily, besides just aiming for the minimum word count, there are some pretty simple solutions, like using artificial intelligence, conducting thorough research, and trimming unnecessary words. But there’s more.

In this guide, we’ll unpack some practical tips to help you make your essay concise and impactful. Time to make every word count!

7 Best Ways To Shorten an Essay

Here’s a detailed breakdown of the best ways you can shorten your essay:

1. Use Artificial intelligence

When we talk about academic writing, artificial intelligence (AI) can be a game changer, especially when it comes to reducing the length of your essays.

Tools like Smodin can help make your content more concise while enhancing overall quality. AI can help you shorten your essay through the following methods:

  • Automated rewriting : AI rewriting tools can reformulate existing content to make it more straightforward while maintaining the original meaning.
  • Sentence simplification : Algorithms can analyze your sentences and suggest simpler alternatives, helping eliminate redundant information and reduce word count.
  • Research assistance : Certain platforms have AI-powered research tools that allow you to quickly gather the most relevant information. This ensures that every word in your essay contributes to your argument without unnecessary fillers.
  • Plagiarism check : Ensuring your essay is plagiarism-free is crucial. For example, Smodin’s plagiarism detection tools help you identify and replace copied content with original, concise expressions.
  • Instant feedback : Receive real-time suggestions on how to streamline your text, focusing on the essentials to effectively communicate your message.
  • Reference generation : Automatically generate and insert citations in the correct format, which helps save you time while maintaining the academic integrity of your essay and keeping it short.

2. Identify Unnecessary Words and Remove Them

One of the simplest yet most effective ways to shorten your essay is by identifying and eliminating unnecessary words.

This approach helps decrease word count and sharpens your arguments, making your writing more compelling. You can identify and remove extra words by doing the following:

  • Spot wordy phrases : Often, phrases can be condensed without losing meaning. For example, the phrase “due to the fact that” can be replaced with “because.” Be on the lookout for wordy phrases that increase word count needlessly.
  • Remove unnecessary prepositional phrases : Prepositional phrases can be redundant or add unnecessary detail. Evaluate whether these phrases add value or just extra words. Cutting them can make sentences more direct.
  • Avoid redundancies : Redundant pairs like “absolutely essential” or “future plans” can be reduced to one word without losing informational value.
  • Trim excess adjectives and adverbs : Adjectives and adverbs can make writing better but can also lead to over-description. Use them sparingly, especially when they don’t contribute additional meaning to the nouns and verbs they modify.
  • Fewer words; more impact : Aim for brevity by using fewer words to express the same idea. This will help to reduce the word count while making your writing more impactful and clear.

3. Tighten Sentence Structure

Tightening your sentence structure is crucial for making your essay more concise and readable. Use active voice to make your writing clearer and more dynamic. This is especially important in academic writing, where you have to get to the point quickly.

In academic essays, shifting from passive voice to active voice can shorten and strengthen your sentences. For example, instead of writing, “The experiment was conducted by the students,” you can say, “The students conducted the experiment.” This reduces the number of words and places the action directly with the subject, making your sentences more direct.

Combining two separate sentences into one can streamline your ideas and reduce redundancies. Look for opportunities where sentences can be merged without losing their significance. For example, “He wrote the book. It became a bestseller.” can be rephrased as “He wrote the book, which became a bestseller.”

Also, avoid unnecessary qualifiers and modifiers that don’t add substantial information. Sentences often become bogged down with these extras, making them cluttered and long.

4. Conduct Thorough Research

When writing essays, extensive research can make the final output a lot shorter. Effective research helps you gather precise information that’s relevant to your topic. This means you’ll write more directly and avoid needless elaboration. Here’s how you can conduct research effectively:

  • Define the scope of your research : Determine what information is essential to the argument. This initial step will help you focus your research efforts and prevent irrelevant data.
  • Identify key sources : Begin with scholarly databases and academic journals that offer peer-reviewed articles. These sources provide credible, authoritative information that can be crucial for academic writing.
  • Use precise keywords : When searching for information, use specific keywords related to your essay topic. Precision here will help find the most relevant articles and studies, reducing time spent on unnecessary reading.
  • Evaluate sources : Assess the relevance and reliability of each source. Check the publication date to ensure the information is current and relevant to your topic.
  • Take notes efficiently : As you research, jot down important points, quotes, and references. Organize these notes according to the sections in your essay to make writing faster.
  • Synthesize information : Combine information from multiple sources to build a strong argument. This will allow you to write comprehensively and with fewer words, as each sentence carries more weight.

5. Improve Your Paragraph Structure

Streamlining paragraphs can make your essay shorter and more digestible for the reader. With a well-structured paragraph, you can focus on a single idea supported by concise statements.

Begin each paragraph with a topic sentence that clearly states the main idea. This sentence sets the direction and tone, letting the reader know what to expect. It also helps ensure that every following sentence relates directly to the main idea.

Condense supporting information by merging ideas that logically coexist within a single sentence or phrase. After that, evaluate each sentence for its contribution to the paragraph’s main idea. Remove any information that is repeated or goes into too much detail.

Focus on providing evidence and explanations that directly support the main point. You should also end each paragraph with a sentence that reinforces the main idea and potentially links to the next paragraph. This creates smooth transitions and keeps the essay focused and cohesive.

6. Refine the Introduction and Conclusion

These sections frame your essay and influence how your arguments are perceived. Here are some ways to keep them concise yet effective.

Introduction

The introduction should be engaging and concise, clearly stating the purpose and scope of your essay. Begin with a hook that grabs the reader’s attention, followed by background information that sets the context. Incorporate your thesis statement early on, ideally at the end of the intro.

The conclusion needs to reinforce the thesis. Summarize key points in the essay and show how they support the thesis. Provide a final thought that leaves the reader with something to ponder.

Also, remember to keep it tight – the conclusion isn’t a place for introducing new ideas. It should wrap up the ones you presented and prompt the reader to pose their own questions.

7. Edit and Proofread

Keep your essay concise and error-free by allocating ample time for editing and proofreading. These processes scrutinize your work at different levels, from the overall structure to word choices and punctuation. Here’s how you can go about it:

Start by reading through your entire paper to get a feel for its flow and coherence. Check if all paragraphs support your thesis statement and if section transitions are smooth. This will help you spot areas where the argument might be weak, or wording could be clearer.

Focus next on paragraph structure. Ensure each paragraph sticks to one main idea and that all sentences directly support the idea. Remove any repetitive or irrelevant sentences that don’t add value.

Then, look for clarity and style. Replace complex words with simpler alternatives to maintain readability. Keep your tone consistent throughout the paper. Adjust the sentence length and structure to enhance the flow and make it more engaging.

Proofreading

Proofreading comes after editing. The focus here is catching typing errors, grammatical mistakes, and inconsistent formatting. It’s always best to proofread with fresh eyes, so consider taking a break before this step.

Use tools like spell checkers, but don’t rely solely on them. Read your essay aloud or have someone else review it. Hearing the words can help you catch errors you may have missed.

Lastly, check for punctuation errors and ensure all citations and references are formatted according to the required academic style. This and all of the above are areas in which AI can help get the job done with speed and precision.

Why You Might Need to Shorten Your Essay

Ever heard the expression “less is more”? When it comes to academic writing, it normally is. Keeping your essays concise offers several benefits:

  • Enhances clarity : A shorter essay forces you to focus on the main points and critical arguments, reducing the risk of going off-topic. This clarity makes your writing more impactful and easier for the reader to follow.
  • Meets word limits : Many academic assignments have a maximum word count. Learning to express your thoughts concisely helps you stay within these limits without sacrificing essential content.
  • Saves time : For both the writer and the reader, shorter essays take less time to write, revise, and read. This efficiency is especially valuable in academic settings where time is usually limited.
  • Increases engagement : Readers are more likely to stay engaged with a document that gets to the point quickly. Lengthy texts can deter readers, especially if the content has unnecessary words or redundant points.
  • Improves writing skills : Shortening essays helps refine your writing skills. You become better at identifying and eliminating fluff, focusing instead on what really adds value to your paper.

Overall, adopting a more succinct writing style helps you meet academic requirements and polish your communication skills.

Jonesboro Student Honored with D.A.R.E. Top Essay Award

JONESBORO, Ark. (KAIT) - On Monday at a local ceremony, Victoria Dut of Fox Meadow School of Creative Media was honored with the D.A.R.E. Top Essay Award, highlighting her standout composition among over 1,300 students.

The Jonesboro Police Department, having launched its D.A.R.E. program seven years ago following state program discontinuation, aims to foster a positive image of law enforcement.

“One of the neat things about D.A.R.E. is you’re getting a police officer in the classroom, and so we’re getting to be with them for ten weeks. And you know maybe some of the bad things that they’ve heard about officers, we can change their mind on it, while we’re teaching them how to make good decisions. Because D.A.R.E. is not just about the drugs anymore.” explained Cpl. Jamie Seaborn, a D.A.R.E. officer.

Cpl. Seaborn said Dut’s essay stood out to her and his fellow D.A.R.E. officers because of how she talked about her personal experiences with the things D.A.R.E. talks about.

Each year, the program challenges fifth graders across Jonesboro to write essays about their impressions of D.A.R.E.

“We choose a school winner for each school. From all the school winners, we then select one overall student,” said Seaborn. “The top winner is our overall student from over 1,300 kids.”

This year’s competition saw a change with Nettleton’s Fox Meadow School breaking a multi-year winning streak held by Valley View Intermediate and International Studies Magnet schools.

Dut shared that her initial nervousness turned to happiness upon winning, “I’m gonna hang it in my room where my award wall is, where I usually have awards from last year and this year.”

Fox Meadow was also presented with a plaque to display among previous winners in the front office, where it will remain until next year’s winner is announced.
