International Internship

NASA’s Office of STEM Engagement (OSTEM) paid internships allow high school and college-level students to contribute to the agency’s mission to advance science, technology, aeronautics, and space exploration. 

OSTEM internships offer students an opportunity to gain practical work experience while working side-by-side with mentors who are research scientists, engineers, and individuals from many other professions. Internships may be full time or part time; and, they may be on a NASA center or facility, or even working from your home or dorm. Join our NASA team and gain valuable on-the-job experience, build your resume, and strengthen your career readiness. We offer three sessions annually, so visit our website often for opportunities. 2025 Internship Application Deadlines: Spring 2025 : Aug. 23, 2024 Summer 2025 – Early Decision : Oct. 25, 2024; Final, Feb. 28, 2025 Fall 2025 : May 16, 2025

NASA Intern and Fellow Opportunities for International Students

NASA International Internship (NASA I²) seeks to better prepare students to work in a global environment and on multicultural international missions. NASA and the nation benefit from a cadre of future scientists, engineers and other professionals who become familiar and experienced in multinational environments. Internship sessions are arranged in three sessions during the calendar year (spring, summer and fall).

Are Internships Paid?

The majority of interns receive a stipend award, but there are some volunteer opportunities noted in project descriptions.

Is housing my responsibility if I receive an internship?

Interns are responsible for making their own housing arrangements. This includes locating their own housing options and paying for their housing. Centers may be able to offer minimal assistance by providing a list of local available housing and/or establishing a private social media group for interns to utilize for relocation planning purposes.

Is a Letter of Recommendation required?

The Office of STEM Engagement does not require a letter of recommendation.

Will I need a car?

Your center location and housing options will determine if you need a car. At most centers, unless you find housing within walking distance, you will most likely need a car. However, there are ample public transportation options at some centers

I'm not a science or engineering student. Can I still get an internship at NASA?

Yes! Interns may support a variety of business and program management work, including human resources, administration and program analysis, accounting and budget, communication and public relations, procurement and contracts, information technology, security, and education. No matter your academic major, you’ll find that NASA is a place where you’ll belong to a supportive community that values your background, perspective, and life experiences.

North America

Our teams in Atlanta focus on theoretical and application aspects of computer science with a strong focus on machine learning and the algorithmic foundations and theoretical underpinnings of deep learning, with applications to natural language understanding, machine perception, robotics, and ubiquitous computing and sensing.

Our teams in Cambridge work closely with academics at local universities as well as collaborators at local institutes with a goal to impact both Google’s products and general scientific progress. We accomplish this by releasing open source tools, publishing our work and sharing our findings with the academic community.

Our engineers work on such high-impact products as Ads, Chrome, and YouTube, while our sales teams push the limits of digital advertising for top-tier clients. Take advantage of our picture-perfect SoCal weather by hitting the rock wall and elevate team strategy sessions with a game of oversized chess on the roof deck. Google Research in Montreal performs both open-ended and applied research, in numerous areas including reinforcement learning, meta-learning, optimization, program synthesis, generative modeling, machine translation, and more. We also support the local academic community and have several academic collaborations, including with Mila – Quebec Artificial Intelligence Institute.

We work in close collaboration with academia, with a goal to impact both Google’s products and general scientific progress. We accomplish this in two ways: by releasing software libraries, a way to build research findings into products and services, and through publishing our work and sharing our findings with the academic community.

Our team in Pittsburgh conducts research in natural language processing, machine learning, image and video understanding, and optimization, and our impacts range from academic paper publications to software systems used throughout Google. We collaborate closely with research and applied groups in many areas, and also work closely with Carnegie Mellon University and other organizations in the extremely strong computer science community in Pittsburgh.

Our research teams in Seattle and Kirkland work on a wide range of disciplines — from quantum computing to applied science to federated learning and health. In doing the above, and more, a large focus of our work also focuses on advancing the state of the art in machine learning.

Europe, Middle East, and Africa

Google Research teams in Accra collaborate with global research teams to lead many sustainability initiatives of particular interest to Africa. We implement theoretical and applied artificial intelligence with a strong focus on machine learning and algorithmic foundations to tackle some global challenges, such as food security, disaster management, remote sensing, among others.

Researchers in our Amsterdam office push the boundaries of what is possible in many domains, including natural language understanding, computer vision and audio, reinforcement learning and machine learning for the natural sciences.

In Berlin, our teams work on a range of topics from foundational to more applied and involve data comprised of text, images, video, audio and more. We are engaging and collaborating closely with Berlin’s vibrant academic and startup communities.

We work on machine learning, natural language understanding and machine perception, from foundational research to AI innovations, in search, healthcare, and crisis response.

We work on natural language understanding and conversational dialog, text-to-speech, (on-device) machine learning, human-centered AI research and user research as well as healthcare.

We work on problems in quantum computing as well as speech and language processing, and collaborate closely with Google’s product teams across the world.

Research internships.

Research interns put inquiry and theory into practice. Alongside fellow doctoral candidates and some of the world’s best researchers, interns learn, collaborate, and network for life. Interns not only advance their careers but also contribute to exciting research and development strides. During the 12-week internship, students are paired with mentors and expected to collaborate with other interns and researchers, present findings, and contribute to the vibrant life of the community. Internships are available virtually, at our locations around the world, and in all areas of research. During the application process, we’ll work with you to find the opportunity that best aligns with your interests. Internships are offered year-round, though they typically begin in the summer. All internships are paid. We’ll also help with visa applications where needed.

Postdoctoral researcher positions

Microsoft Research provides a vibrant research environment, with an open publications policy and close links to top academic institutions across the world. Postdoctoral researcher positions provide an opportunity to develop your research career and to interact with some of the top minds in the research community, with the potential to have your research realized in products and services that will be used worldwide. Summer Research Opportunities at Harvard

This program is offered through Harvard Griffin GSAS and the Leadership Alliance .

During this 10-week program, Summer Research Opportunities at Harvard (SROH) interns conduct research and participate in discussions with Cambridge-based Harvard faculty, build their presentation and research discussion skills, and take part in field trips with other Harvard summer programs. Students in the program live in Harvard housing and enjoy access to the outstanding resources of the university.

The program is funded by Harvard Griffin GSAS, Harvard Molecules, Cells, and Organisms , Harvard Genes, Ecosystems, Organisms , and the Leadership Alliance . 

Note that we also have funding for students interested in atmospheric sciences as part of the NSF-supported International Partnership in Cirrus Studies project, a collaboration including the University of Chicago, Harvard University, Princeton University, the University of Washington, and multiple European institutions. The University of Chicago has information on participating faculty . Research focuses on modeling and measurement of high-altitude clouds.

Applicants in the social sciences and humanities should feel free to write to the SROH program and indicate which Harvard faculty they have identified in their area(s) of interest and whether or not they have been in contact with said faculty.

NEW! The Department of the Classics would welcome applicants interested in fields related to Greco-Roman antiquity, including, but not limited to Republican and Imperial Latin literature, Cicero and Roman oratory, Latin historiography, reception of Latin literature, and the history of classical scholarship.

SROH takes place between June and August. For information on eligibility requirements and how to apply, please visit the Leadership Alliance Summer Research-Early Identification Program.

Applications open on November 1, 2022, and must be submitted by February 1, 2023.

Room, Board, and Stipends

The in-person version of the program covers travel to and from the program, housing, and typically a stipend of $3,500 and a food allowance of $1,500. Students participating in MARC or similar programs that provide summer support are welcome to apply. Students are required to participate for the full period of the program.

Undergraduate research can provide valuable experience, is useful to all majors (including humanities, arts, and social science majors) and will enhance your resume and assist you in future job searches.

What is a Research Internship?

Research internships, in all majors, provide students with the opportunity to apply knowledge from the classroom to real world, professional environments. Internships can be advertised or you can develop your own internship opportunity. UC Davis students participate in basic and applied research with faculty on campus, at the UC Davis Health System and in local businesses and non-profits. Typical research internships are 10-12 hours a week, with a multiple quarter commitment. They may be volunteer or paid. Research internships usually qualify for transcript notation . During the summer, many full-time research internships are available.

Be clear about the expectations you have for gaining experience through an internship, as well as the expectations of your supervisor or employer. Entry-level research internships might involve performing mundane tasks, but have the opportunity to evolve into a role with more responsibility. Some possible tasks a research intern might do are:

  • entering and analyzing data
  • conducting and transcribing interviews
  • interacting with research subjects
  • sterilizing lab equipment for a lab
  • completing literature reviews
  • recording and observing behaviors
  • performing administrative duties
  • assisting with field work

This is a DC-based hybrid position. Interns must reside and have a permanent address in the Washington Metropolitan Region for the duration of their internship.

POSITION OVERVIEW

The Partnership’s research team advises government on topics such as customer experience, data, recruiting and hiring talent, innovation, employee engagement, generational interest in government, performance management and presidential transition. The Research, Evaluation and Modernizing Government team oversees the Partnership’s monitoring, evaluation, and learning portfolio.

Research and Evaluation interns will have the opportunity to grow qualitative research skills by working on high-visibility reports, insightful issue briefs and innovative research projects that aim to make the government more effective. Examples include the Best Places to Work in the Federal Government® Rankings and the Customer Experience Profiles. Additionally, interns may assist in evaluating the short-and long-term outcomes of the Partnership’s programs and support efforts to modernize technology in government.

Interns’ specific responsibilities will include a combination of conducting background research for literature reviews, scheduling interviews and roundtables, taking notes, attending and writing summaries of interviews with federal leaders and private sector experts. Many activities will revolve around preparing for and transcribing qualitative interviews. Research interns also may assist in planning and coordinating roundtable discussions and public-facing report release events. Interns may also assist with survey design and qualitative and quantitative data collection.

The ideal candidate will have a strong passion for public service, an interest in social science research and event planning, possess strong writing skills and be proficient in Microsoft Office Suite, especially Excel.

WORK ENVIRONMENT

This job operates in a professional office environment in Washington, DC and occasionally at local external venues. This position requires consistent use of office equipment such as computer, telephone, printer and scanner.

COMPENSATION

Full-time interns will receive $1,500 per month. Part-time intern compensation will be pro-rated accordingly.

This is a DC-based hybrid position. Interns must reside and have a permanent address in the Washington Metropolitan Region for the duration of their internship. Per Partnership policy, all full-time employees will be expected to work from the office a minimum of 2x per week.

EXPECTED HOURS OF WORK

Business hours are Monday-Friday, 9 am to 6 pm, though exact work hours may vary depending on availability and need. Academic schedules will be accommodated; a part-time schedule may be considered. There may be occasional early morning or evening activities required.

If travel occurs, it is usually during the business day.

2024 SUMMER RESEARCH INTERN PROGRAM

JOB DESCRIPTION: The Summer Research Intern Program at UTSI in Tullahoma, Tennessee provides undergraduate students with research experiences. Interns are assigned to the supervision of one or more UTSI professors and given a long-term research project to complete over the course of the summer. At the end of their appointment, interns summarize their research in individual final reports and discuss their findings in short presentations. Some travel may be required. Additional educational opportunities are provided, including engineering seminars and a career panel discussion.

EMPLOYMENT DETAILS:

9 Week Summer Internship Application Deadline: Monday, March 11, 2024 Position Type: Temporary, Part-time (75%) Salary: Total of $4,050 stipend ($15.00/hr x 30 hrs/wk x 9 wks) Location: UTSI campus in Tullahoma, Tennessee Starts On: June 3, 2024 Ends On: August 2, 2024

TRAVEL: Some travel to other facilities may be required.

REQUIREMENTS: These internships are open to undergraduate students who are majoring in physics, chemistry, material science, computer science, mathematics, all branches of engineering, and related fields. Candidates must be 18 years of age or older. Candidates must have an interest in attending graduate school at UTSI. Candidates should also have enthusiasm for research, a desire to learn, and the ability to work well with others. Depending upon the fund source, U.S. citizenship may be a requirement. Selected candidates must be authorized and eligible for employment. Current U.S. federal immigration law requires identification and eligibility verification prior to employment. International students are responsible for applying for their own visa as may be required.

HOUSING INFORMATION: Upon offer and acceptance of the internship, information on the housing application process will be emailed to the candidate.

A limited amount of on-campus housing is available for summer research interns. There is no cost associated with staying in the dormitory but sharing the space with a roommate is a good possibility.

The primary purpose of the Undergraduate Internship is to provide an intern with relevant field experiences in their chosen field of study. One or more mentors will be assigned to the intern to provide instruction, guidance and to assess performance. The intern is responsible for observing the functions and processes of the assigned work unit. In addition, the intern may be given selected work assignments to reinforce the learning experience, to assess the performance levels and to provide benefit to the work unit. The intern will be responsible for completing all internship-related assignments and reports for both Mayo and the participating educational facility. The duration and timing of the internship will be arranged with the intern and the sponsoring educational facility. Placement in our internship program does not provide financial assistance with relocation, housing, or transportation. Interns must pass a pre-employment drug test and criminal background check.

The incumbent must be enrolled in a degree program from a college or university. Typically, this internship would occur after the student has taken most of the courses required by the degree program. Must have authorization to work and remain in the United States, without necessity for Mayo Clinic sponsorship now, or in the future (for example, be a U.S. citizen, national, or permanent resident, refugee or asylee).

Dear Colleague Letter: Graduate Research Internships at National Institute of Biomedical Imaging and Bioengineering (NSF-NIBIB/BETA INTERN) Supplemental Funding Opportunity

Dear Colleague:

Fostering the growth of a globally competitive and diverse research workforce and advancing the scientific and innovation skills of the Nation is a strategic objective of the National Science Foundation (NSF). The NSF and Center for Biomedical Engineering Technology Acceleration ( BETA ) housed in the National Institutes of Health (NIH)- National Institute of Biomedical Imaging and Bioengineering ( NIBIB ) have entered into a partnership to support the training of graduate students to meet both the NSF's strategic workforce development objectives as well the NIBIB's mission to transform through engineering the understanding of disease and its prevention, detection, diagnosis, and treatment and NIBIB's support of the next generation of diverse, interdisciplinary researchers across the career continuum.

This Dear Colleague Letter (DCL) describes this unique partnership with NIBIB/BETA and is aligned with and conforms with the NSF INTERN opportunity described in the Dear Colleague Letter: Non-Academic Research Internships for Graduate Students (INTERN) Supplemental Funding Opportunity . This DCL is referred to as the NSF - NIBIB/BETA INTERN DCL.

Recipients submitting an INTERN supplemental funding request are required to have a policy or code of conduct that addresses sexual harassment, other forms of harassment, and sexual assault. For more information, read about NSF policies regarding harassment .

SUPPLEMENTAL FUNDING OPPORTUNITY

NSF will consider supplemental funding requests that enable a Principal Investigator (PI) or co-PI to request up to six months of additional support for a graduate student supported on an active NSF award with the following goals:

  • To provide graduate students with the opportunity to augment their research assistantships or NSF Graduate Research Fellowship Program (GRFP) fellowships with non-academic research internship activities and training opportunities that will complement their academic research training.
  • To allow graduate students to engage in professional development experiences that will enhance their preparation for multiple career pathways after graduation.
  • To encourage the participation of the full spectrum of diverse talent in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM).

ELIGIBILITY

Recipients with awards that include funding for graduate students, including institutional Graduate Research Fellowship Program (GRFP) awards, are eligible to submit a supplemental funding request. The PI for an active GRFP fellowship (not the GRFP fellow) should contact GRFP ( [email protected] ) regarding specific requirements before submitting a supplemental funding request on behalf of a GRFP fellow.

To be supported through an INTERN supplement responding to this DCL, graduate students (including graduate research fellows) being considered must have completed at least one academic year in their graduate programs (master's or doctoral), be in good academic standing and demonstrate satisfactory progress towards their research.

INTERNSHIP OPPORTUNITIES

PIs and co-PIs of NSF grants and the research advisor of the GRFP fellows are encouraged to contact Dr. Manu Platt ( [email protected] ) at NIBIB/BETA, to explore suitable opportunities for research traineeships at NIBIB/BETA in Bethesda, Maryland, for the graduate students who are supported on their NSF grants.

SUPPLEMENTAL FUNDING REQUEST PREPARATION INSTRUCTIONS

Information about requesting supplemental support is contained in the NSF Proposal and Award Policies and Procedures Guide ( PAPPG ), Chapter VI.E.5. In addition to the PAPPG requirements for supplemental support, the following materials must be included.

  • A two-page summary that describes the internship
  • A one-page personal statement from the graduate student describing career goals, accomplishments, and how the activity will better prepare the individual to enter the workforce.
  • Research summary to include contribution(s) to research discipline
  • Institution(s)
  • Year of study (1st year, 2nd year, etc.)
  • Completed coursework
  • Employment and volunteer/outreach history
  • Publications (accepted only)
  • Other information relevant to the proposed internship
  • A letter of collaboration from an authorized official at the host organization that describes the internship opportunity and mentoring the student will experience during the internship.
  • An endorsement letter from the PI that confirms that the student meets the eligibility requirements specified in this DCL. The letter must describe how the proposed internship activity will contribute to the student's graduate education experience and how it may impact time to degree.
  • A budget and a clear justification for all requested budget costs.

SUPPLEMENTAL FUNDING AMOUNT

The total amount of funding requested must not exceed $55,000 per student for one six-month period. NSF plans to fund about 5-10 supplements per fiscal year, depending on the availability of funds.

PERIOD OF SUPPORT

The supplement funding will provide up to six months of support for an internship. Note: only one supplemental funding request may be submitted for a given student. A PI or co-PI may submit no more than one request per year of their award if there are multiple graduate students supported by the award, with the exception that GRFP will consider requests for internships for more than one GRFP Fellow from a single GRFP award.

Supplemental funding requests may be submitted at any time.

SUBMISSION AND REVIEW

Requests for supplemental funding must be submitted via Research.gov. A PI or Co-PI with an NSF award should contact the program director who manages the award prior to submission. GRFP INTERN supplement requests are submitted by the GRFP PI, not by the GRFP fellow or the fellow's research advisor. Requests for supplemental funding submitted in response to this DCL will be reviewed internally by NSF program directors. All supplements are subject to (a) the availability of funds and (b) merit review of the supplemental funding request.

SPECIAL AWARD CONDITION

Intellectual Property Rights: Internships under this DCL are considered equivalent to traineeships. The National Science Foundation and the National Institute of Biomedical Imaging and Bioengineering claims no rights to any inventions or writings that might result from its traineeship awards. However, trainees should be aware that NSF, another Federal agency, or some private party may acquire such rights through other support for particular research. Also, trainees should note their obligation to include an Acknowledgment and Disclaimer in any publication.

This is a DC-based hybrid position. Interns must reside and have a permanent address in the Washington Metropolitan Region for the duration of their internship.

POSITION OVERVIEW

The Partnership’s research team advises government on topics such as customer experience, data, recruiting and hiring talent, innovation, employee engagement, generational interest in government, performance management and presidential transition. The Research, Evaluation and Modernizing Government team oversees the Partnership’s monitoring, evaluation, and learning portfolio.

Research and Evaluation interns will have the opportunity to grow qualitative research skills by working on high-visibility reports, insightful issue briefs and innovative research projects that aim to make the government more effective. Examples include the Best Places to Work in the Federal Government® Rankings and the Customer Experience Profiles. Additionally, interns may assist in evaluating the short-and long-term outcomes of the Partnership’s programs and support efforts to modernize technology in government.

Interns’ specific responsibilities will include a combination of conducting background research for literature reviews, scheduling interviews and roundtables, taking notes, attending and writing summaries of interviews with federal leaders and private sector experts. Many activities will revolve around preparing for and transcribing qualitative interviews. Research interns also may assist in planning and coordinating roundtable discussions and public-facing report release events. Interns may also assist with survey design and qualitative and quantitative data collection.

The ideal candidate will have a strong passion for public service, an interest in social science research and event planning, possess strong writing skills and be proficient in Microsoft Office Suite, especially Excel.

WORK ENVIRONMENT

This job operates in a professional office environment in Washington, DC and occasionally at local external venues. This position requires consistent use of office equipment such as computer, telephone, printer and scanner.

COMPENSATION

Full-time interns will receive $1,500 per month. Part-time intern compensation will be pro-rated accordingly.

This is a DC-based hybrid position. Interns must reside and have a permanent address in the Washington Metropolitan Region for the duration of their internship. Per Partnership policy, all full-time employees will be expected to work from the office a minimum of 2x per week.

EXPECTED HOURS OF WORK

Business hours are Monday-Friday, 9 am to 6 pm, though exact work hours may vary depending on availability and need. Academic schedules will be accommodated; a part-time schedule may be considered. There may be occasional early morning or evening activities required.

If travel occurs, it is usually during the business day.
