When you start writing a fashion assignment, what comes to your mind is having an understanding of fashion trends. But it’s not just writing about what is in fashion these days; rather, it is important to know the insights of fashion, its art, materials, and techniques.

“Fashion is more art than art is.”

-Andy Warhol

Since the fashion sector is always changing, the teachers assign various assignments to the master’s students to test their knowledge, creativity, and writing abilities. It’s a perfect chance to delve deeply into the world of fashion and study its various styles and trends. To be successful in assignment writing, you must follow a proper structure and guidelines.

Students face a lot of academic pressure to get good grades in assignments, presentations and exams, thus mostly compromising on the quality of writing. To ensure your highest grades in fashion assignments, get assignment writing services from experts like The Academic Papers UK.

Here, we have summed up the whole guide to writing an assignment on fashion and provided you with the top 10 fashion experts’ tips to write a successful and high-quality assignment.

What is the Importance of Assignments for Fashion Students?

To understand the importance of fashion assignments, first, you should go through the definition of fashion and its importance. Fashion is simply more than what you see and wear, it shows your personality and traits. The main goal of fashion is to use your clothing and style to convey who you are.

In this digital age of the Internet, fashion has become more accessible than ever. You can experiment with many looks to determine which one best fits you. Seasons change, and so do trends in fashion. What’s hip today might not be the next big thing. It’s an exciting, dynamic world that is increasing day by day.

According to the Zippia report published on 15, 2023, the value of the global fashion industry in 2023 is about $1.7 trillion, and it accounts for 2% of the GDP (Gross Domestic Product) globally.

Whether you are studying fashion to get a degree in it or exploring it like a curious person to know the insights, you have to read, research, analyse and collect a huge amount of data. Through its study, you will be able to critically analyse fashion, history, art and the personal identities of people.

Top 10 Tips for Fashion Assignment Writing

1. understand the assignment guidelines.

Make sure you fully understand the task before you start writing. Go through your institute’s guidelines given for fashion assignment writing, such as specifications, directives, and constraints set forth by your instructor. Check if there are any formatting specifications, word counts, or important questions to answer. Having a complete understanding of the purpose and the extent of the task is essential for achieving achievement.

In the book Fashion Writing by Claudia B. Manley and Abi Slone, the authors explain how to start fashion writing with a solid purpose.

2. Select the Right Topic

Topic selection is the first step to writing fashion design assignments for students. Fashion is a very general topic, and every other person is writing about it. You have to be critical in selecting an engaging, different and well-defined topic. Choose a topic of your interest and passion that also inclines with your assignment writing objectives.

For example, some topics for fashion assignments are new emerging fashion trends, social media and ethical fashion, fashion illustration and its impact on the environment, the growth of the fashion industry in developing countries, fashion designing courses, etc.

3. Do Proper Research

Writing engaging fashion assignments requires keeping up with the newest trends, designers, and industry advancements in the very dynamic sector of fashion. Make use of online resources, fashion journals, periodicals, and academic databases to collect huge amounts of evidence to verify your claims and concepts.

4. Make a Structure Plan

In any task, having a well-structured format is essential. But before making a structure for the writing assignment, you should concentrate on creating a compelling thesis statement of your topic. It is the foundation of any assignment, which gives your work a complete focus and direction. It should summarise your primary claim or viewpoint. Make sure it is precise, short, and clear.

To structure your assignment, divide it into sections and sub-sections for a clear understanding. Divide your fashion assignment writing into an introduction, several body paragraphs, and a conclusion. Every section should have a distinct goal and make sense when combined with the others.

5. References and Citations

To prevent plagiarism and to properly acknowledge the original writers, make sure you quote and reference your sources. When it comes to reference styles, master’s level assignments sometimes call for academic precision, so make sure you use the right criteria given by your instructors, such as APA, MLA, or Chicago.

6. Edit and Proofread

Regardless of the depth of your research, do not turn in a project without carefully editing and proofreading it. Check your fashion assignment for typos, inconsistencies, and grammatical mistakes. You can also think about getting input from a professor or a fellow if you are confident of their constructive criticism.

According to the book How to Improve Your Assignment Results by Colin Neville, after writing the first draft, always give some time to redrafting and proofreading to make your assignment writing mistakes-free.

7. Maintain a Balance between Theory and Application

In the field of fashion, you should work on combining theoretical understanding with real-world examples. There should be a balance between scholarly study and practical applications in your tasks. When appropriate, you can also add case studies and business examples to your fashion designing assignments.

8. Add Visuals and Be Critical and Analytical

Visuals play a great role in attracting and engaging the readers. By adding aesthetic photos, videos and slogans, you can enhance the beauty of your fashion assignment writing. Moreover, assignments at the master’s level demand more sophisticated critical thinking. In the book A Visual Guide to Essay Writing, the author also stated the importance of critical evaluation in academic writing through visuals, such as:

assignment on topic fashion

Clear and strong arguments in academic writing serve as the basis that attracts the reader. Examine the results of your study, evaluate ideas or fashion trends, and make persuasive arguments. Engage with the material rather than merely summarising it.

9. Keep It Relevant

Writing about fashion can be a daunting task due to its immense variation and scope. But always make sure your writing stays relevant to the subject of the assignment. Steer clear of side topics that could throw off your fashion assignments and lead you towards failure.

10. Request for Feedback

Don’t be afraid to ask your lecturers or fellow students for criticism. They often help you to polish your writing with their insightful opinions and recommendations for development. You’ll improve as a writer and your assignments’ quality with their constructive criticism.

Learning the art and science of fashion assignment writing at the master’s level is vital. By following the above tips, you’ll be more prepared to take on your assignments with confidence and produce good work to demonstrate your in-depth knowledge of fashion. Keep in mind that practice makes everything perfect. The more fashion writing you do, the more proficient you’ll become in writing fashion assignments.

Introduction

Fashion is a non-verbal way of communication that conveys a lot about the person’s personality, background and style. Earlier it was exclusively the world of the affluent, celebrities and royalty. However, fashion is now within the reach of the common man, especially the youth. Besides, dress fashion is an evolution of ideas, which begins as a fad, but in course of time gets accepted in society as a style, which could be in attire, behaviour or lifestyle. Fashion is mostly associated with glamour. It makes people feel confident and bold. People can express themselves openly. Today fashion is not limited to western countries; now, every country has come out with their fashion sense, not only the clothing but the accent of that country, the living style.

Vedantu experts have crafted an essay on fashion that covers its significance and how it reflects in your personality. This essay has promoted the thought perfectly that fashion is also about carrying yourself in society without having an attractive or trendy attire.  It is about being comfortable with yourself and not being a doppelganger of another person.

Why is Fashion Important?

Fashion is important because it reflects the culture of a country. It makes our life colourful and changes our life with time. In a way it also adds variety to life, providing an opportunity in trying out something new. Fashion is not only limited to clothing or makeup but in a much broader sense includes accessories like shoes, perfume, hairstyle, mannerism, etiquette and attitude towards life. Fashion is not restricted to self-expression only but also a means of self-empowerment and confidence. It encompasses the total spectrum of human activity, which relates to a specific period. It is an outlook of life.

Fashion is how you carry yourself in society without wearing anything trendy. It is how you attempt to make yourself look flawless even without any make-up. It helps you in revealing your true identity.

Evolution of Fashion

The world of fashion is always evolving.  It is amazing to see how the different events in history have influenced and changed the way people dressed and looked throughout time. Thus long dresses, veiled headgear that was trends of the Victorian era, have been replaced with micro and mini dresses and the jeans culture associated with the modern era.

From the 1920s to the 1990s fashion just not changed in clothing but also in accessories, footwear and hairstyles. The trends of wearing hats, carrying purses, shoes and men wearing long ties and bows have been continuously changing with periods, occasions and culture.

Hairstyles also have been changing throughout time. Short boyish haircuts were popular during the 1920s to 1940s. Wigs were more popular in the 1960s and thereafter hairstyles kept changing from short to bob cut then to mid-back cut and now maintaining long hair.

Fashion Industry

As fashion evolved, the industry was formulated to manage the process for the consumers. The fashion world has given shape to a new industry, the ‘Fashion Industry’.

The fashion industry was created to design, manufacture and market clothes, footwear and accessories. Before creating the apparel industry, people made clothes for themselves. The mass production of clothing began in the mid-nineties when some creators began to make garments that did not require any fitting session with the tailors. The fashion industry in its true sense was established in the twentieth century when the neighbourhood tailors decided to become the manufacturing business.

Fashion impacting the Youth

The positive side of fashion is it enhances your life. It not only allows you to dress fashionably but also allows being independent in thinking and maintaining self-esteem. At the same time, fashion is negatively impacting the youth. It has taken up the life of the youth so much that the youngsters are highly obsessed with creating style statements at an age where they need to focus on their studies and other important aspects of life. The fashion trend has become a cult with today’s generation. They blindly try to imitate the models and celebrities without understanding the true essence of fashion.

Content of Fashion Essay

While writing about fashion, you have to put some extra effort to explain evolution in both positive and negative ways.

The fashion world has given a new face to the clothing market. It has turned into a fashion industry.

Impact of fashion on teenagers

Teenagers are more cautious about their attire; they are aware of only one prevalent face of fashion.

What is the importance of fashion?

The need is therefore to strike a balance between being fashionable and wearing what suits you. The young generation needs to understand that fashion in the true sense is the attitude that you carry and just not fashionable clothes and accessories.

FAQs on Fashion Essay

1. What is the core of fashion?

Fashion is not only about wearing trendy clothes or footwear. The core of fashion lies inside the person. Fashionable core comes active when you wear something with confidence to show your choices to the world. And that is the only thing to make fashion a trend from time to time. Vedantu experts, after a detailed study, have explained this stuff, and that’s what makes an essay on fashion a complete package to deliver to the audience.

2. How is fashion impacting today’s generation?

Fashion affects today’s generation with its useless and dented influence that fashion is limited to costly clothes and gadgets. Teenagers are easy targets for those who consider themselves influential personalities under the name of fashion. Many of the time, the child gets intrigued by looking at the lifestyle of another person. They fall into the eye-pleasing trap and try to copy the same. It leads them to lose their own identity and wear fake costly attire to please their hunger for recognition among their friends.

3. How does Vedantu help in essay writing?

Vedantu offers you essays on different topics that have a chance of coming in the exams or already had in the exams. Experts of Vedantu have explained the requirement of the essay and suggested the points to include in a good essay. Also, with Vedantu, you learn various facts about various topics that can help you retain the process of making an excellent essay. Go to vedantu.com to explore more topics, and start writing essays of your own to express your understanding of the topics.

4. Does fashion help in your growth?

Yes, fashion does help you grow if you understand the right meaning of it. Following any person and famishing for recognition is not a fashion that can help you grow. It helps you when you understand fashion is more about being right with your choices regarding the dressing, accent, or culture of your community or country. Fashion is nothing more than a term for the things that makes you comfortable and enhance your confidence in being you.

5. Are fashion and trends different?

Yes, fashion and trends are different. The trend follows the fashion; fashion never leaves the frame, it gets highlighted from time to time, and at some particular time, it becomes a trend that everybody follows. Trends have a short life, but fashion stays for life. It gets older with time, like the dhoti kurta culture of India has become old, but it gets rejuvenated with the new look, and it becomes a trend for a while. Fashion is more real than trends.

6. What is Fashion?

Fashion is self-expression in the form of clothing, accessories, footwear, hairstyle, perfume, etiquettes and attitude.

7. Who is known as the Father of Fashion?

Charles Frederick Worth is known as the father of fashion.

8. How is Fashion impacting Today’s Generation?

Fashion has become a cult in this modern era. Youngsters especially blindly want to imitate celebrities and models. They are forgetting the true essence of fashion. They think that fashion is confined to only clothing, footwear and accessories.

9. Why is Fashion Important?

Fashion is important because it is the reflection of our society and culture.

Essay on Fashion

500+ words essay on fashion.

Fashion is one of the most talked-about industries in today’s world. Fashion can be defined as anything that becomes admirable among the masses. It is a popular aesthetic expression. Fashion is related to clothing, hairstyle, makeup, accessories, footwear and lifestyle. People want to distinguish their personalities from others with their style quotient. Like every new year, fashion also comes and goes. The latest fashion will be more fashionable and colourful than last year.

New trends in fashion influence people of all ages. There is a tremendous amount of competition between the industry and consumers. Different cultures and nationalities have different styles of fashion. Due to this reason, it is always fascinating to travel to various parts of the world to observe how people dress in those countries. Now, clothes have become one of the main reasons to express themselves instead of merely covering their body.

Different people need different styles and designs for their uniqueness and personality before wearing that specific fashion design. This essay will talk more about fashion history, importance and trends.

History of Fashion

Fashion is all about the history of people. For thousands of years, people have loved fashionable clothing. Clothes, from the early days of Egypt, have become our expression. We can see fashion worn in various civilisations throughout history, documents, drawings, and other archaeological findings. Eastern neighbours influenced clothes of different styles worn by the Greeks. Both males and females used to wear thick woollen long dresses.

During ancient times, Egyptians used to wear light cotton clothing, and Egyptian women wore long, ready-made clothes. Later on, the Romans dominated the most significant example of fashion and style.

When people started migrating to Europe, accordingly, the style changed. To keep themselves warm, women used to wear warm clothes and men plain and armour clothes.

Since there were not enough raw materials to produce new clothes for people who migrated to America in that era, dresses were ordered and sent to the oceans by ships to cope with the demand. Suits with leggings were men’s attire, and women wore long clothes and hats on their heads. Over time, the form of the dresses transferred from voluminous dresses into soft, frequent, high-waisted skirts.

Women’s skirts were shorter and thinner at the beginning of the century. Trousers of men slowly went from ankle to knee-length. During the World Wars, women’s style transformed into shorter skirts below the knee.

The ‘80s brought significant trends related to fashion and hairstyles for both genders. The transitional fashion period is from the sixties and seventies. During this time, women wearing trousers became acceptable.

From the 20th century to the 21st century, fashion change continued, and still today, it is evolving.

Fashion Trend

When we talk about influencing fashion, political influencers play a vital role. There are a lot of instances where politicians become fashion symbols, like Princess Diana and First Lady Jacqueline Kennedy. Political revolutions also left a significant impact on fashion trends.

Technology is another significant factor that influences fashion. The fashion industry saw rapid growth in technology such as 3D printing technology, wearable technology, etc. The Internet also affects fashion trends.

People are influenced by their favourite stars, influencers, etc. The strongest influencers in the field of fashion are social media influencers. Young stars try to emulate the fashion styles of their loved celebrities. For example, hoodies came into fashion due to rap musicians. Television and movie stars also influence fashion trends.

It’s entirely up to you to be fashionable; it shouldn’t be forceful, and it is your own decision what you want to follow. Our fashion sense also reflects our culture. It makes our life colourful and adds variety to life, providing an opportunity to try out something new. Though this time of the 21st century in India, most people are influenced by the style of fashion, they have not forgotten our traditions and culture, which are the priority and symbol of our country.

Paper Topics: Writing about Fashion

For the uninitiated, fashion might be thought of as the same as “trendy clothes”. It definitely refers to styles of dress and accessories, and other types of ornamentation, but the term can be applied to styles of writing, performing, speaking, and speaking, and so much more. Fashion is a big part of what makes us able to say, “Oh my god, that is so 90s!” about not just clothes, but hair, music, art, movies, cars, even houses!

Synonyms include, but are not limited to, vogue, craze, trend, and fad. Synonyms do not mean the exact same thing, of course, and with fashion, they tell us less about fashion and more about how we, as a culture, think of fashion. Part of why we think so little of fashion, is that it is fashionable to do so! There is a great deal of smart non-academic discourse on fashion, there are also ways of thinking about fashion that are highly academic. Fashion reflects culture, time periods, evolution, and social status in addition to serving important functional attributes. Stereotyping of fashion as shallow, superfluous, and feminine in a negative way, is itself a fashion in certain subcultures. Fashion topics, as innate elements of the humanities, carry with them the potential to be applied to cross discipline analysis.

Interesting Fashion Paper Topics

Fashion is an expression of art and of culture, but it also is art and culture. There are countless ways to explore elements of fashion within the context of multiple fields of inquiry. For non-fashion majors, fashions many intersections make it fun to find ways to connect it to disciplines like sociology, literature, political science, business, history, biology, art, and drama. For those of you who are fashion majors, there are so many elements to explore from functional aspects like pattern crafting to more philosophical dimensions like analyzing emerging and historic trends, to how fashion and journalism have often worked together and used icons to their mutual benefit. Historical analysis of fashion should consult strong secondary and primary resources that are academic in nature, but they can easily include non-academic sources and ephemera like circulars and pamphlets. There are many communities whose interactions with fashion, queer communities and communities of color, whose trends and businesses might not be covered as well in traditional sources. Fashion is business, small, medium, and utterly massive (just ask Beyonce and Taylor Swift), if you are more interested in numbers, there is no reason fashion cannot be the lens for exploring historic or modern business intelligence.

The list below includes several topic approaches that can be used for constructing interesting fashion papers. While the staff at PowerPapers.com is equipped to complete full academic projects on any of the topics articulated, they are equally willing to work with clients on their own original project concepts. This list can help you be creative, investigative, or it can help you decide to let someone else take on the burden of writing. Enjoy!

Fashion Industry Leaders on Upskilling Opportunities in the Workplace

BoF Careers Week 2024 banner advertisement

Learning new skills throughout your career is critical for professional progression and to stay on top of a fast-moving, highly competitive workplace like fashion .

Post-pandemic, the workplace continues to evolve drastically, driven by rapid technological innovations and cultural workplace shifts , with virtual or hybrid working the new norm. As a result, upskilling is increasingly expected by the vast majority of employers — between 2018 and 2020, business leaders reporting that they expect employees to pick up new skills on the job rose from 65 percent to 94 percent, according to the World Economic Forum (WEF).

With this expectation, many businesses are bolstering their learning and development (L&D) offering. The WEF reported that companies are likely to provide reskilling and upskilling opportunities to 73 percent of their staff in the lead up to 2025. This kind of L&D could look at providing training for hard skills required for the job at hand, such as utilising artificial intelligence (AI) tools or new software programmes; it might also focus on soft skills, like optimising communication in a virtual work environment or managing a team working across various locations and timezones.

However, the desire for upskilling opportunities is also being driven by employees themselves, who are eager to stay up-to-date or advance their abilities — simply, to ensure they remain employable and engaged in their work. This appetite for learning is only set to increase as the next generation enter the workforce — early career network and management platform Handshake reports that 87 percent of undergraduates say L&D benefits are either important or essential when evaluating a job opportunity.

What’s more, upskilling offers tangible rewards to the employee. In the US, workers gained an additional 8.6 percent in annual income after participating in upskilling programmes as of June 2021, according to global analytics and advisory firm Gallup. This translates to an average of an additional $8,000 a year.

Now, BoF shares advice from HR executives and talent experts at Alexander McQueen , On and Deckers Brands about the skills they perceive most critical to success in the wider fashion industry, the value of upskilling, as well as an insight into the opportunities they offer to upskill within their respective companies.

Transversal skill sets are becoming more important and critical to employees. Three soft skills that come to my mind are, firstly, the capability to be adaptable and flexible — the fashion industry has changed a lot and will continue changing. Adaptability is becoming more important for every employee at every level of the organisation, to really understand and move with the change.

Then, of course, communication skills are critical at every level of the organisation. I remember when I started, it was something that was only really requested for senior team members. Today, it’s critical across the business, from a client advisor to CEO.

The [third] transversal skill is the ability to remain curious throughout the journey. We are talking about self-development more and more, which really starts from the curiosity all of us need to have. It needs to be kept throughout the journey no matter the level of seniority.

Why is upskilling important in the workplace today?

The business landscape is constantly evolving — consumer trends, technology, but also the environment. The ways of working have changed massively in the last three or four years. That’s why we need to continue upskilling ourselves, to expand our knowledge to help us as an organisation and within the organisation — to unlock new ideas and to develop the ability to tackle new challenges that we really are facing on a daily basis.

How does Alexander McQueen nurture employees’ learning and development?

Everything for us starts with a proper performance review, where everyone at every level of the organisation, at least once or twice per year, has the opportunity to sit with their manager to discuss their performance and what they need to perform better in the next year ahead. We have an e-learning platform called The Grid that is open to everyone in the organisation and has more than 1000 courses on different topics. These are not only linked to your personal role [...] but they also link to and are useful for your personal development.

Then we have other group training courses like mentoring or other more specific programmes, such as for women’s leadership. We also do Lunch and Learns each month, which are moments held by senior management to share with younger employees their own experience and career path, to offer concrete examples of how you can develop and grow within the industry.

Last year, the group launched a special initiative called the Global Learning Day. We recently hosted the second edition in McQueen and in all the other brands. It’s two full days, fully dedicated to learning where people all across the group had the opportunity to participate in workshops managed by the group, but we also had our own specific agenda as a brand. And we also had some specific initiatives at a local level.

Noa Perry-Reifer, Chief People Officer at On

The first one, I think, is around resiliency and the ability to deal with change. These days, it’s critical to work with people on how they can become more resilient, especially when [workplace] changes occur so frequently. So the ability to embrace change and try to learn from challenges and mistakes along the way is critical.

What I see at On is those who enter into or develop that growth mindset and build that level of resilience are those that actually have the best experience and flourish in their careers.

[Another skill set] which is valuable in this space is leadership — it’s important to clarify here that I don’t mean management. I mean real leadership. It’s not the title or even the role that you get, but actually what you create out of it. So it’s the ability to provide a clear and inspiring vision and strategy, support your people along their growth journey, and it’s about putting the company and the team first before yourself.

How does On nurture employee learning and development within teams?

There are various methods that we use for learning and development because we know people learn and develop differently. But one [approach] that spans across everyone is the need for continuous feedback — there is no way to grow and develop as an individual if you don’t give and receive feedback. This is why, as an organisation, we prioritise it so much.

We believe that, in many cases, learning should not be outsourced but should be owned by our own talent. [...] We believe that it is their responsibility to share their learnings with others and we also see that people really enjoy that and also learn from each other.

Movement across the organisation is [also] essential in order to not build silos that big companies have between regions and between functions. So we invest a lot into people moving between functions or people moving between regions.

What wider initiatives does On offer for upskilling in the workplace?

When we think about learning and development, we try to look at individuals holistically beyond the actual professional environment. These days, things are far more blended — it’s very difficult to separate the work and the personal. This is why we developed the framework called Build, [which] has the ambition to cover all aspects of an individual — so we look at the mind, the body and purpose.

To give you an example, every person, no matter their level, can have an external coach if they decide they want [one]. They can use the coach for something personal if this is what they choose to do, because we believe that development and growth will only come if you think about all the different aspects holistically.

Kelsa Albert, Senior Learning Experience Manager at Deckers Brands

A lot of people will focus on the technical skills and, if they study something, they will focus on the skills to do that job. What should be considered much more is leadership skills, communication skills, presentation skills, networking — the more behavioural side of things.

Certainly, [fashion] is a small industry, particularly in the UK. You work for one fashion house or retailer and you move to another and there’s always people that are connected to other people. So it’s important to think about the networking skills as well as making contacts in the industry.

Things are moving quickly in terms of technology and research around that — it’s important that people continue to evolve. [...] The skills that you needed for a job two or three years ago, they’ll be different to what you need now. So I think that constant on-the-job learning is really important.

There’s also a bit of a gap at the moment because formal education is becoming so expensive in the UK — and probably globally — so there’s a real opportunity to upskill in the workplace as well, with things like apprenticeships and even senior leader apprenticeships, which is [something] we are trying to do at Deckers.

What opportunities does Deckers Brands offer for upskilling in the workplace?

We have lots of the stuff that you might expect: Microsoft training every month; “Presenting with Impact” that anyone can join every month as well — there’s this regular drum beat of opportunities for people. We also have more structured programmes, like Trailblazers, which is a programme for new leaders. We think that focusing on that middle management talent helps all teams reporting into the business generally.

Something [else] we have trialled over the last year is a shadow board programme called Pathfinders. So we get early talent on the programme, working on some projects and then feeding back to the exec team, so the exec team can keep their ear close to the ground. It is an amazing opportunity for development and exposure.

From the HBO documentary Brandy Hellville & The Cult of Fast Fashion.

True crime docs, scammer docs, serious docs ... one of the most notable developments of the streaming era of television is that there are new documentary films and series coming out constantly . The difficulty for someone who might want to check some of them out is that they go by in a blur, and a lot of them have similar-looking titles and promotion. There are still big-ticket entries — on April 21, HBO will premiere a follow-up series to its huge true-crime hit The Jinx — but there are also a lot of lower-profile projects flying by, so let's take a moment to check in with a few current ones.

What Jennifer Did

A feature-length film about a 2010 home invasion that killed a woman and left her husband in a coma, What Jennifer Did is mostly told from the point of view of the police who gradually zeroed in on the couple's daughter, who was home at the time. Police-side crime documentaries tend to be the least interesting to me, and in this case, it feels like there's a tremendous amount of context missing about the family in favor of a fairly simple "she wanted to be with her boyfriend" narrative. But I say that in part because I have read the 2015 piece by Karen Ho in Toronto Life that considers more broadly what led to this bizarre act. Netflix, available now.

Brandy Hellville & the Cult of Fast Fashion

I can honestly tell you I was not very familiar with the Brandy Melville brand before I watched this film, which tells the story of how social media helped make a juggernaut out of a whole lot of nondescript tiny shirts. (It's more complicated than that, and ... also not.) The story of the gross in-store culture (which reminded me a lot of parts of the Netflix film White Hot, about Abercrombie & Fitch ) is interesting and pretty lively, but I would have preferred a little more time spent on the fast-fashion element, which I do think is ripe for more documentary work. Max, available now.

The Synanon Fix

Sometimes, it feels like documentaries are their own expanded universe. I was just watching an entirely different show about the "troubled teen" industry and its dark history, and it mentioned how Synanon, which began in California as a program to treat addiction, influenced much of what became the "we will grab your badly behaved teenager from their bed, take them to some secluded location, allow them no contact with anybody, and turn them around" model. And now, Synanon has its own docuseries, which considers whether and when Synanon turned into what you would call a cult. (Was it the head-shaving? The mass weddings? The dictates about reproduction?) But what stands out the most is the consideration of how a program and a community can change shape, and it takes a while for people inside and outside it to register those changes. HBO, airing now.

We're only scratching the surface of what's out there — Netflix's #1 show as I write this is their Unlocked: A Jail Experiment , about a "program" that gives incarcerated men more freedom. And I am 100% committed to finding time before it expires on April 20 to watch Menus-Plaisirs — Les Troisgros , the latest from the great documentarian Frederick Wiseman, which is available on PBS.

'American Idol' recap: First platinum ticket singer sent home as six contestants say goodbye

assignment on topic fashion

"American Idol" viewers have cast their votes and determined which of the season's 20 remaining contestants should make it into the Top 14.

As the 10 singers with the most votes sailed into next week during Monday night's episode, the other half of the bunch was placed in the "danger zone" to sing for their lives. These 10 "Idol" hopefuls competed for the four remaining spots, doled out by judges  Katy Perry ,  Luke Bryan  and  Lionel Richie .

Ajii 's placement in the bottom half of the contestants proved controversial, as the crowd booed "Idol" fans who didn't catapult the 27-year-old nursing home security guard from Brooklyn into the Top 14. But that wasn't the most shocking moment of the night, as Perry experienced a wardrobe malfunction when the night came to its dramatic conclusion.

Monday night's six-person elimination, which included the departure of one of the season's three platinum ticket holders, came after Elleigh Marie, KBlocks, Blake Proehl and Haley Mia were voted out Sunday night due to failing to garner enough votes from the Top 24's performances last week in Hawaii.

Here's what went down in Episode 11.

What happened last week? Emmy Russell, grandchild of Loretta Lynn, wows Luke Bryan

This vote got the biggest reaction of the night

After Ryan Seacrest announced Ajii wasn't in the Top 10, the crowd behind the host nearly drowned him out with their boos, followed by chanting Ajii's name.

He was tasked with winning over the judges with his rendition of The Weeknd's "Call Out My Name."

Ajii, known for his truly impressive vocal box, kept up his streak of solid performances Monday night. However, the pink beanie atop his head was the most exciting aspect of his performance, visually, as Ajii remained center stage with the microphone stand.

"The audience is booing America's vote," Perry noted.

She added that Ajii "brought the vocals" and "at the end of the day, it's a singing competition." However, she also nodded that a contestant needs more than a good voice to make it to the end.

Also last week: Top 24 singers battle it out in Hawaii with special guests Tori Kelly, Iam Tongi

'This is a family show,' says Katy Perry after a wardrobe malfunction

After he was placed in the "danger zone," Roman Collins took the instruction to "sing for your life" seriously as he belted out James Brown's "It's A Man's Man's Man's World."

The impact of his performance was so powerful, apparently, that Perry lost a portion of her cutting-edge top, which almost looked like a sharper version of Chicago's Cloud Gate, aka "The Bean."

"That song broke my top off," Perry explained as she sank beneath the desk to hide the issue. "This is a family show."

"You have the ability to blow the roof off of a place,” Bryan told Roman. "Or a top!" Perry chimed in, eventually clutching a seat cushion to her chest to hold her high-fashion outfit together.

Who was eliminated from the Top 20 on 'American Idol'?

After the judges chose Jayna Elise, Nya, Jordan Anthony and Roman Collins to round out the Top 14, the following six contestants were eliminated from the competition:

  • Quintavious
  • Kennedy Reid
  • Jennifer Jeffries
  • Odell Bunton Jr.
  • Mackenzie Sol

Odell Bunton Jr. became the first platinum ticket winner of the season to not advance in the competition.

Who's in the Top 14 on 'American Idol' Season 22?

With both America's and the judges' votes, the following contestants are making it through to next week:

  • Mckenna Breinholt
  • Jack Blocker
  • Mia Matthews
  • Sam "Kayko" Kelly-Cohen
  • Will Moseley
  • Kaibrienne "KB" Richins
  • Emmy Russell
  • Julia Gagnon
  • Triston Harper
  • Jayna Elise
  • Jordan Anthony
  • Roman Collins

How to vote for your favorite 'American Idol' contestant

Viewers can cast their votes at  idolvote.abc.com  or by downloading the "American Idol" app in the Apple app store or Google Play.

You can also text your favorite contestant's assigned number (1 through 14, based on the order of their performance) to 21523.

Votes will be counted through 9 a.m. ET Tuesday.

Rays outfielder Josh Lowe set to start rehab assignment Thursday

  • Marc Topkin Times staff

ST. PETERSBURG — Outfielder Josh Lowe’s return to the lineup is starting to come into view for the Rays.

Manager Kevin Cash said Lowe, the team’s most productive left-handed hitter last season, is slated to begin a rehab assignment Thursday with Triple-A Durham.

And he might not need too much time there.

“It’s kind of all just how he feels,” Cash said. “(Sunday), he said he feels really good. It’s going to take him a minute to get his timing going. But if he feels good, that’s most important.”

Lowe initially was sidelined in late February, after playing in two spring games, due to left hip inflammation. He was working toward a March 17 return to the lineup with he strained his right oblique.

He started playing in extended spring games last week. Assuming he gets through a Tuesday game with no issues, he will join Durham Wednesday in Worcester, Massachusetts, and play on Thursday. A return to the Rays before the end of April seems possible and would add much-needed left-handed power, plus speed, to the lineup.

Another lefty hitter expected to play a key role, Jonathan Aranda, also is progressing toward a return.

Aranda had two pins in his fractured right ring finger removed Monday and is expected to start taking swings in the next few days.

“He felt like he was going to be pretty much full-go to start ramping up,” Cash said. “He’s been throwing. He felt like he would be able to swing pretty pain-free. So if that’s the case, we’ll start working to get him built up.”

Cash said Aranda, who was injured March 19, will go through the standard progression of batting cage drills, starting with hitting balls off a tee, and work toward taking batting practice on the field before starting a rehab assignment.

“So, still a ways away,” Cash said, “but (moving) in the right direction.”

Hey, it’s you guys again

Starters have different ways of dealing with facing the same team in consecutive outings. Expect Rays right-hander Aaron Civale to take a cerebral approach in making adjustments Tuesday against the Angels.

“He’s a unique mind in terms of how he approaches his starts,” pitching coach Kyle Snyder said Monday. “This is a unique situation, (playing) out of division and you’re facing a team twice in a row.

“But he is very good at kind of reverse-engineering things that have happened. And being able to act on those, whether it’s the second time through (the order in a game) or the second time he faces a team in a week. And it’s pretty impressive the lengths that he goes through in terms of preparing himself and his ability to realize how to keep guys in between (and off-balance). He’s going to lean on some of what he was successful in doing that last time, and then probably just try to apply that.”

Civale worked five innings April 9 at Angel Stadium, allowing a two-run homer to Mike Trout, as well as an unearned run. He walked one and struck out four.

Jackie Robinson Day reflections

The Angels’ Ron Washington, one of two current Black managers in the majors, said celebrating Jackie Robinson Day, as was done throughout Major League Baseball on Monday, is very important: “It means everything, because I don’t think I’ll be sitting here managing and talking to you (reporters) if it wasn’t for Jackie Robinson breaking that barrier.” ... All players and coaches wore No. 42 in Robinson’s honor.

NFL free-agent receiver Marquez Valdes-Scantling, a St. Petersburg native and product of Lakewood High and USF, threw out the first pitch, which was more than a little bit outside.
The Rays Baseball Foundation and Rowdies Soccer Fund on Monday announced $25,000 Racial Equity Grants to the Helen Gordon Davis Centre for Women, James B. Sanderlin Neighborhood Family Center, Sing Out and Read, and Where Love Grows Inc. as part of their annual contribution “to support organizations committed to ending systemic racism.”
