Hind Rasheed, a 17-year-old student from Lebanon living in Saudi Arabia, wrote an empowering essay about hearing loss for school.

“This essay demonstrates how I was dealing with my own situation since I got my first Phonak hearing aids ,” Rasheed says. “It views how I was and how I’ve become a more proud and successful person than ever. Moreover, it would be an inspiration for others to love and value themselves with embracing their case rather than hiding it.”

Rasheed has been wearing Phonak hearing aids since age three. Her opening statement represents the theme of her essay and how she navigated the uncertainty of living life with hearing loss:

“The sense of being different can make you struggle and experience intensely throughout your life. Sometimes this can make you get lost and shattered not knowing how to deal. Moreover, this innate scar will affect you completely in knowing more about your own world. Hearing impairment affected me medically, socially, and academically in negative and positive [ways].”

Rasheed wrote about finding a school placement that was right for her, advocating for herself, and finding hope.

Rasheed uses a variety of hearing assistive technology. The Bluetooth feature on her Phonak hearing aids is especially helpful for her. She also enjoys using the Phonak app on her phone. This allows her to adjust her hearing aids in a variety of ways.

Rasheed’s mother has been a huge support for her in a variety of ways. She inspires her and always checks in while Rasheed is in different situations.

Messages for the “Hearing World”

Rasheed has several messages for the “hearing world.” It can be easy for the hearing world to not be aware of the struggles that the deaf community faces. However, that doesn’t make our struggles any less real, Rasheed says. She adds that missing out on conversation or social interaction can be a significant factor in the life of someone with hearing loss interacting with the hearing world. It would be helpful if the hearing world could better understand these challenges.

“Hearing impairment doesn’t show how weak or how delicate they are,” Rasheed says. “In fact, it shows how inspirational and powerful they are in overcoming their complications.”

Rasheed would also appreciate greater awareness about the challenge of masks during the pandemic, she says.

Impact of Hearing Loss 

Hearing loss has shaped Rasheed’s life in numerous ways. She wrote about her journey toward self-acceptance after being diagnosed with hearing loss. Her experience helped transform a variety of skills. Understanding her hearing loss was difficult at first, making her feel insecure. Her hearing aids were something she felt she needed to feel ashamed about or hide. Eventually, she got tired of not feeling like she had a voice of her own. That defining moment allowed her to work toward embracing her hearing loss and speaking openly about it.

There are many aspects of her hearing loss that Rasheed is quite proud of. One of the core things she’s most proud of is never giving up despite the many obstacles that have crossed her path.

“No matter what complication you face, you should keep going on until you reach [your] dream,” Rasheed says. “My hearing loss journey wasn’t an easygoing process. It was HARD WORK! I kept going with DETERMINATION. And I have never been so proudly devoted to myself. I love to embrace my own beauty through talking about my experiences.”

On the positive side, Rasheed has developed strong will and resilience. She has also improved her problem-solving skills and ability to navigate difficult situations. All of this has led to taking on more responsibilities and an increase in confidence.

“As years went by, I started to accept myself,” Rasheed says. “Every day this self-love goes beyond! Instead of hiding and seeing hearing impairment as a flaw, I encourage myself to learn and explore more about [it]. This helps me respect and honor myself, and for others [like me] to better understand that they should value themselves every day. Every person is unique and creative in their own way! So embrace it.”

Definition:  The term hearing impairment refers to individuals who have any degree of hearing loss which impedes their ability to act/interact in a traditional way.  This can refer to people who are either deaf (profound hearing loss which cannot benefit from amplification) or hard of hearing (ranges from mild to severe and can benefit from amplification).  Children with hearing impairment may qualify for services under the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act. (National Association of Special Education Teachers, 2007).

Causes:  Hearing impairment can be either acquired (loss occurred after birth due to illness or injury) or congenital (loss was present at birth).  Acquired hearing impairment is most commonly caused by exposure to noise, infection, head trauma, and childhood diseases.  Congenital hearing impairment can be caused by pregnancy complications/infections and hereditary factors (National Dissemination Center for Children with Disabilities, 2010).

Prevalence:  The National Dissemination Center for Children with Disabilities (2010) reports that more than 12,000 children are born with a hearing loss.  Profound deafness occurs in approximately 4-11 children out of every 10,000.

Classroom Accommodations:  Hearing impairment does not affect a child’s intellectual abilities, but such children may need special accommodations to best fulfil their academic potential.

Classroom Environment:

• Minimize extraneous classroom noise
• Modify classroom seating in circular position to facilitate lip-reading

Teacher Presentation/Strategies:

• Use facial expressions, body language when appropriate
• Avoid speaking while writing on the board
• Keep presentation style at modulated pace
• Printed copies of overhead and teacher’s notes
• Write out special announcements, assignments

Assessments:

• Repeat or write out directions
• Allow for audio amplification/captioning of instructions
• Test in small group setting

Over the past six years, I have grappled with the most significant consequence of my accident: the struggle to discern the subtleties of speech. Communicating has become an intricate dance of watching television with captions, unconsciously raising my voice, and concealing my hearing aids in embarrassment. However, nothing surpasses the frustration of repeatedly asking, "What?" only to remain in the dark, failing to grasp the words of others. This isolation, stemming from the inability to fully connect through conversation, often leaves me feeling detached from the world.

Through the power and emotion contained within a single chord or melody, I found a profound and transcendent language that transcended the limitations of spoken words. Beethoven's Symphony No. 6, in particular, captured the essence of music's impact on me. Its elegant melodies, stirring harmonies, dynamic shifts, and precisely placed notes painted a vivid portrait of nature. From delicate birdcalls and babbling brooks to thunderous storms and cascading rain, Beethoven masterfully depicted both the serenity and the fear that nature evokes. Music, to me, transcends language; it is a universal medium through which we can all communicate. Beneath the diverse spoken languages of the world, we are all inherently connected through this harmonious language. Embracing my passion for music enabled me to transcend the isolation and challenges posed by my hearing loss, offering a sense of unity, connection, and, most importantly, happiness.

Over the years, I have explored various musical instruments and participated in bands, orchestras, and formal music theory training. Regardless of one's technical proficiency or knowledge, music remains a deeply personal expression from the heart. While my accident robbed me of my hearing, it could not silence my ability to communicate through the profound language of music.

Music became my refuge, a world where sound wasn't defined by audibility but by the emotions it evoked. I no longer needed to strain to understand spoken words; instead, I could feel the vibrations and immerse myself in the melodies that transcended the limitations of my hearing impairment. The gift of music allowed me to break free from the confines of my hearing loss, offering me an avenue to communicate, connect, and express myself without the burden of words.

My journey with music deepened as I ventured into various instruments, each offering a unique way to convey my emotions and stories. I discovered that the beauty of music lies not only in its technical prowess but also in its ability to convey the depth of human experience. From the soulful strains of a violin to the thunderous rhythms of percussion, I explored the vast spectrum of emotions that music could articulate.

Through bands and orchestras, I learned the power of collaboration, where individual voices harmonized to create something greater than the sum of its parts. Music became a universal language that transcended barriers and allowed me to connect with people from diverse backgrounds. It was a testament to the unifying force of art, binding hearts through shared melodies and rhythms.

Formal training in music theory opened doors to a deeper understanding of composition and structure. I realized that the art of creating music was not confined to playing instruments but also extended to crafting intricate compositions. Music theory became a means to translate my thoughts and ideas into musical expressions, further enriching my relationship with this profound language.

While the accident had taken away my hearing, it had also granted me a heightened sense of empathy and resilience. I learned to listen not only with my ears but also with my heart, tuning into the unspoken emotions that resonated within each note. My journey with music had given me a more profound means of connection, enabling me to share stories, ideas, and emotions that transcended the boundaries of spoken language.

Being deaf is a handicap that afflicts millions of people around the world every year. Hearing loss can result from any number of afflictions that can affect the outer, middle, or inner ear. The range of hearing loss can also vary from mild to severe.

The ear is made up of the outer, middle, and inner ear. The outer ear consists of the auricle, the external auditory canal, and the lobe. Its primary function is to funnel sound and noise into the middle ear. The middle ear consists of the eardrum and the three middle ear bones: the Mallues, Incus, and the Stapes. Its primary function is to conduct sound. The inner ear is where sound is interpreted through electrical impulses relayed to the brain, making it understandable sounds that we recognize.

The labyrinth of the inner ear contains the nerve endings of the vestibular nerve, which is the nerve of equilibrium, and the auditory nerve. These are branches of the vestibulocochlear or eighth cranial nerve. The vestibular nerve ends supply the semicircular canals and the otolithic membranes in the vestibule, while the auditory nerve supplies the cochlea. Diseases of the labyrinth of the inner ear may affect both the vestibular nerve and the auditory nerve, or they may only affect the auditory nerve, resulting in hearing loss. The most common causes of inner ear diseases are congenital nerve deafness, viral infections, and ototoxic drugs.

Congenital nerve deafness is a defect of the auditory nerve in the cochlea and may be present at birth or acquired during or soon after birth. Usually, both inner ears are affected to a similar degree, resulting in severe hearing impairment. However, in some cases of congenital nerve loss, the impairment can be moderate. Many cases of congenital nerve deafness have been caused by the rubella (German measles) virus in the mother during the first three months of her pregnancy. This can happen during a rubella epidemic, even when the mother has no symptoms of the infection. In most cases, the vestibular nerve is not affected or is affected to a lesser degree, and in most cases, the outer and middle ear structures are not affected.

A vaccine against the rubella virus, made available in 1969, has reduced the number of cases of congenital nerve deafness in developed countries (Lucente 84-87). Congenital nerve deafness, acquired at or soon after birth, may result from insufficient oxygen (anoxia) during a difficult and prolonged delivery or from incompatibility between the baby’s blood and that of its mother. In a few cases, congenital nerve deafness is an inherited failure of the cochlea to develop properly. When the hearing loss is severe, speech cannot be acquired without special training.

Children afflicted with hearing loss must attend special classes or schools for the severely deaf, where they can be taught lip-reading, speech, and sign language. Electrical hearing aids can be helpful, especially during classes, to use the residual hearing. Another alternative, although controversial within the deaf community, is a cochlear implant, which is sometimes useful in cases of profound hearing loss. In this operation, an electrode is surgically implanted in the ear to directly stimulate the auditory nerve between the brain and the ear.

Viral infections can cause severe degrees of sensorineural hearing loss in one ear, and sometimes in both, at any age. The Mumps virus is one of the most common causes of severe sensorineural hearing loss in one ear. The measles and influenza viruses are less common. www.deaf.com

There is no effective medical or surgical treatment to restore hearing impaired by a virus (Lucente 95). Ototoxic drugs can cause temporary and sometimes permanent impairment of auditory nerve functions. Certain drugs, like aspirin in large enough doses, may cause ringing in the ears and a temporary decrease in hearing that ceases when the person stops taking the drug. Quinine can have a similar effect but may cause permanent impairment of auditory nerve functions in some cases. Certain antibiotics, such as streptomycin and neomycin, may cause permanent damage to auditory nerve functions. Susceptibility to auditory nerve damage from ototoxic drugs varies greatly among individuals.

In most cases, the vestibular nerve is not affected. Streptomycin affects the vestibular nerve more than it affects the auditory nerve (Lucente 89). Skull fractures and concussions from a severe blow to the head can impair the functioning of the auditory and vestibular nerves in varying degrees. The greatest hearing loss arises when a fracture of the skull passes through the labyrinth of the inner ear.

Bearcats Holtman doesn't allow hearing loss to limit on-court dreams

CINCINNATI (WKRC) - When University of Cincinnati head women’s basketball coach Katrina Merriweather was brought back to her alma mater it was a program in need of a boost.

In the first year under Merriweather, the Bearcats finished with a 14-18 record and made it to the WNIT for the first time since the 2018-19 season.

One of the key pieces Merriweather brought in to help rebuild the program was Abby Holtman, who came from nearby Union.

"Abby has a very unique ability to shoot the ball," said Merriweather. "Most people do not shoot the ball where she does, as well as she does, at the size that she is."

Holtman had been on Merriweather's radar since she was in charge at Wright State University. Holtman, then an underclassman at Ryle High School, went to a Raider Basketball Camp and impressed Merriweather so much she was offered a scholarship. When Merriweather took the job at Memphis, she offered Holtman again. Then as Merriweather came back to Clifton, one more offer went out to Holtman to stay home and play for the Bearcats.

"I think the main thing was it's 25 minutes from home," said Holtman. "That was a really big deal to me because family is really important to me."

As with every freshman, Holtman has had to adjust to the game on the court, and the team has had to learn to play with her. Because what Holtman brings to the game is different than size or shooting; she was born with severe hearing loss.

"The best way I can describe it now that we have noise cancelation," said Holtman. "If you put noise canceling headphones on, you can't cancel out everything."

Holtman's hearing loss comes with slight adjustments and challenges on the court, but her team and coaches have adapted to make sure the freshman guard is always on the same page when she's on the court.

Playing for the Bearcats means Holtman not only gets to stay close to home, but she gets to watch her youngest sister, Paisley, find her own way to becoming a collegiate athlete. The two sisters are very close, since Paisley, like Abby, was born with severe hearing loss.

"Growing up I always thought it was normal," said Paisley. "I would have questions about it, and Abby made it easier, and I adapted to it because of her."

"It means a lot because I experienced it all before her," said Abby. "It's just you, you can't really change it so own it. It's a part of who you are."

The sisters share the challenges of living with their condition, paired with their love of competing in sports. Though Paisley's passion is volleyball, the two sisters inspire and drive each other in a way others can't understand.

"Seeing her be able to still go (Division I) with all these problems," said Paisley. "It was always a big confidence boost to me."

Caitlin Clark Had Classy Gesture for Fans While Leaving Court After Iowa’s Loss to South Carolina

Iowa superstar Caitlin Clark played her final college basketball game on Sunday, ending her career in with a crushing defeat against Dawn Staley's undefeated South Carolina team in the National Championship , 87–75.

In the aftermath of the final defeat of her historic career, Clark displayed nothing but class, and she bid farewell to her faithful fans one last time before exiting the court.

Amid the agony of defeat—the second time in as many years that Iowa has come up shy in a national championship scenario—Clark could be seen gesturing to her fans, pointing to her heart in order to show them love before heading to the tunnel.

Clark scored a game-high 30 points, including five threes, while adding eight rebounds and five assists. She played every minute of the game, but her performance wasn't enough to topple the Gamecocks, who won all 38 games they played this season.

The 22-year-old set records throughout the Hawkeyes' tournament run, and although it wasn't the curtain call she'd hoped for, Clark made sure to show her appreciation for her supporters and was all class on her way off the court.
