Writing Tips for Your Scrum Master Cover Letter

Three friends holding laptop & tablet exchanging tips on how to write a scrum master cover letter

While writing a cover letter for a Scrum Master role, there are a few essential tips to keep in mind to streamline the process. Make sure you tailor your letter around the company and role, provide added value not listed on your resume, and refine your message.

cover letter examples for scrum master

Tip 1: Customize your cover letter

So  many cover letters are generic and boring! Most blur together in the recruiter’s mind once they’ve read a few—but, of course, you want yours to grab their attention instead. One of the best ways to stand out to a potential employer is to show that you care enough to have learned more about their company and what they’re looking for in a Scrum Master.

Read back over the  Scrum Master job listing , searching for keywords that apply to your experience. Do they mention particular skills that happen to be some of your best traits, such as prioritization or servant-leadership? How about a specific company challenge similar to something you’ve already done? Maybe the organization has a mission statement you feel passionate about—seek helpful tidbits like these to take your cover letter to the top.

Tip 2: Go beyond your resume job descriptions

Your Scrum Master resume is bound to cover some crucial qualification points—but your cover letter shouldn’t just repeat them. Instead, a great Scrum Master cover letter will laser in on a couple of key accomplishments, going beyond the scope of a simple bullet point to leave a lasting impact that demonstrates the value you offer.

Consider questions like these to help you get started:

  • How many Scrum teams have you led, and what was your success rate in terms of completing a product lifecycle objective on time?
  • What standout projects did you guide your Scrum teams to complete, and how did they benefit the company?

Scrum values can be applied to a vast array of project types, after all, so now’s a great chance to offer specifics. Show the unique impact you’ve had as a Scrum Master to increase the chances of your cover letter making it to the interview pile.

Tip 3: Consider your tone and message

While customizing your cover letter and providing examples beyond your resume bullet points are both crucial, your message as a Scrum Master should convey even more. Make it easy for potential employers to read between the lines by skillfully choosing buzzwords and bits of phrasing from the company’s website to show that you can already see yourself there.

Keep your Scrum Master cover letter under a page; you have limited space to deliver the message that you genuinely care about the company and are ideal for the job. Just a heads up: This may take some editing! And if you leave any proofreading errors behind, they could result in a quick dismissal before the reader even gets to see what a great candidate you are.

Make it easy for potential employers to read between the lines by skillfully choosing buzzwords and bits of phrasing from the company’s website to show that you can already see yourself there.

Lastly, mold your tone around the company’s culture. Are you applying somewhere highly technical and more corporate? If so, minimize personal anecdotes and take a more no-frills approach. But if the company is more artsy or laid-back, let your personality shine.

The Framework for Your Scrum Master Cover Letter

Scrum Masters must exhibit superior attention to detail, so the little things in your cover letter can make a big difference. Now that you’ve read three prime examples of Scrum Master cover letters, it’s time to break things down into more detail so you can start writing your own!

How to start a scrum master cover letter

Your contact info:  Include your name, address, phone number, and email address if you use a cover letter template. You can also include your LinkedIn or other professional social media.

  • Formatting : Leave your name out of your address if you use a block format.

7241 Fable Heights Amarillo, TX 79106 (123) 456-7890

Date:  Write out the date, and make sure what you write reflects the date you submit your application documents.

Inside address:  The inside address is the address of the person you’re sending your cover letter to. Include their name, company role, and address.

Marilyn Pratt, Hiring Manager Envision 1201 Louisiana Street Suite 500 Houston, TX 77002

  • Formatting : Write each part of the address on its own line—double-space between the inside address and greeting for clarity.

Greeting:  Also known as the salutation, this is where you’ll make a crucial first impression. Do whatever homework it takes to find the right name for the employer or hiring manager—never use general phrases like “To Whom It May Concern.”

  • Formatting : Using a colon after the greeting in your Scrum Master cover letter should be the default since it’s more formal—especially if you’re applying to a more corporate company. But a comma may work fine if the company culture is more casual.

How to write your scrum master cover letter

Body:  The body of your Scrum Master cover letter should be three or four paragraphs that show your interest, credentials, and genuine enthusiasm for future discussion of the job role.

Opening paragraph:  Remember your whole goal is to stand out from other Scrum Masters by shunning all things generic, vague, and boring! Check out the following examples for reference.

Who doesn’t love green energy these days? I have plenty of Scrum Master experience, so that I can help with this.

Why It’s Bad:  This opening just doesn’t tell us anything at all. The first sentence sounds borderline sarcastic, and the second offers zero credibility in the form of specific skills or values.

I’ve always admired the beauty in our world. My early interests in technology evolved into a drive to contribute to a greener, more sustainable future with a bachelor’s in biology and a strong background in software development, Scrum leadership, and teamwork. I would love to use my knack for interpersonal communication alongside my technical skills to help Envision solve the challenges of creating a sustainable future.

Why It’s Good:  The personal and long-lived connection with the company values is a primary point in this candidate’s favor—and so is how they blend references to the company’s mission statement with their qualifying skills.

Paragraphs 2-3:  These paragraphs should back up your claims from the opening paragraph. Stay organized and concise, just as you would within your actual role as a Scrum Master: You don’t have room to ramble, so keep each paragraph to only one achievement, like an outstanding Scrum team project or velocity improvement strategy, and include only the most relevant metrics.

Since 43% of today’s media consumption is digital, I’d love to use my proficiency in Agile techniques, HTML/CSS, database management, SEO, and jQuery to help Trendsic’s teams meet each fresh, new objective. I owe my previous experience with Jira and Confluence to 5 years spent working as Spectrum’s Scrum Master, leading my software development teams through the streamlined creation of 16+ UX-oriented projects. My laser-like focus and immediate responsiveness to feedback increased team velocity by 94%. .

Why It’s Good:  The media consumption percentage is a direct reference to a claim made on the company’s website, and the candidate immediately dives into the skills that apply to that focal point. They describe one specific, relevant accomplishment next and quantify it directly.

Closing paragraph:  Complete your cover letter with a strong summary of how you’re already aligned with the company’s needs. Finally, provide a compelling call to action that shows a heartfelt interest in connecting to discuss the job role in the future further.

I’d love to work for this company, and I’m plenty qualified. Let me know if you need to know more.

Why It’s Bad:  If anything comes off as disingenuous, it’s this. Keep your closing paragraph promising and enthusiastic.

My natural affinity for a test-and-learn approach with data integration pairs well with my proactive risk management, organizational abilities, and coaching skills, making me an ideal candidate for Envision’s newest Scrum Master. I flourish in challenging environments, building solid connections and guiding my teams with excellent coaching and refinement methods. Please contact me at your convenience for more details on how I can help Envision create a zero-carbon world.

Why It’s Good:  This closing paragraph offers specific abilities from the job description and company’s mission statement, solidly demonstrating this candidate’s ability to work in a challenging environment and help others thrive. The call to action also connects with the company’s mission statement.

  • Formatting : Single-space your body text but double-space between paragraphs for legibility.

Signature:  Say “thank you” to the reader if you didn’t do so in your closing paragraph. Always use a professional close and your real name.

Thank you for your time,

  • Formatting : If you’re presenting hard copies of your Scrum Master cover letter, quadruple space to create room for your John Hancock in blue/black ink.

Enclosure(s):  This vital part of your complete application package signals that there’s more valuable information to review. For instance, Scrum Masters should include their polished resume, application, and, most likely, certifications that attest to their knowledge and professional merits.

Enclosures:  Resume  Application Scrum Master certification

  • Formatting : Use the singular or plural form of “enclosure” correctly, depending on how many items you’re enclosing!

Take your time, explore our resume tips, and compare your doc against our  sample resumes  to find any areas that could use some polish. Between your eye-catching cover letter and an equally stellar resume, you’ll be on the path to Scrum Master success in no time!

Aim for a one-page cover letter of approximately 300 words. While Scrum Masters have many technical skills, it’s important to avoid overwhelming hiring managers with too much information. Instead, focus on the primary duties of the job. For instance, if you’ll be organizing Agile software development systems, then listing skills in managing self-organized or cross-functional teams would be ideal areas to focus on.

A custom cover letter is essential in the hiring process since Scrum Masters may manage projects in many industries and varying forms. For instance, developing software for marketing campaigns will look a lot different than a program used in medical research. For example, medical software has stricter compliance requirements that you would want to emphasize within your project management abilities.

Aim to match the tone in the Scrum Master job description . For example, if you’re applying to a marketing startup with a friendly and laid-back tone, you could explain your use of Agile frameworks and automation techniques similarly. You could even emphasize how those frameworks led to a better work environment that would align with the positive atmosphere the company is trying to create.

To further understand exactly how you can write a cover letter that will get you noticed, check out our further guidance.

How to write a Scrum Master cover letter

Here’s a simple process to write your own interview-winning cover letter.

How to write a cover letter

Write your cover letter in the body of an email/message

When you send a cover letter with a job application, you should always write your message into the body of your email – or the body of the messaging system if you are sending via a job website.

Why do this?

Simply because you want to get your message seen as soon as the recruiter opens your application.

If you attach the cover letter as a separate item, this means the recipient will have to open it before they can read it – slowing down the process and potentially causing frustration along the way.

So, write your cover note in the body of your email/message to ensure you make an instant connection with the reader.

Write cover letter in body of email

Start with a friendly greeting

Cover letter address

Start you cover letter with a greeting that is professional but friendly.

This will build rapport with the recruiter whilst showing your professionalism.

  • Hi, hope you’re well
  • Hi [insert recruiter name]
  • Hi [insert department/team name]

Avoid overly formal greetings like “Dear sir/madam ” unless applying to very traditional companies.

How to find the contact’s name?

Addressing the recruitment contact by name is an excellent way to start building a strong relationship. If it is not listed in the job advert, try these methods to find it.

  • Check out the company website and look at their  About page. If you see a hiring manager, HR person or internal recruiter, use their name. You could also try to figure out who would be your manager in the role and use their name.
  • Head to LinkedIn , search for the company and scan through the list of employees. Most professionals are on LinkedIn these days, so this is a good bet.

Identify the role you are applying for

Now that you have warmed the recruiter up with a friendly greeting, firstly you need to let them know which role you are applying for.

Sometimes a recruitment consultant will be juggling 10 or 10 vacancies, so it’s important to specify which one you are applying to.

Give us much detail as possible (team/department, role title etc.) and paste in the reference number if you have one.

Here are some examples you can use.

  • I am interested in applying for the role of Scrum Master with your company.
  • I would like to apply for the role of Sales assistant (Ref: 40f57393)
  • I would like to express my interest in the customer service vacancy within your retail department
  • I saw your advert for an IT project manager on Reed and would like to apply for the role.

Highlight your suitability

The sole objective of your cover letter is to motivate recruiters into to opening your CV. And you achieve this by quickly explaining your suitability to the roles you are applying for.

Take a look at the job descriptions you are applying to, and make note of the most important skills and qualifications being asked for.

Then, when crafting your cover letter, make your suitability the central focus.

Explain why you are the best qualified candidate, and why you are so well suited to carry out the job.

This will give recruiters all the encouragement they need to open your CV and consider you for the job.

Cover letter tips

Keep it short and sharp

A good cover letter is short and sharp, getting to the point quickly with just enough information to grab the attention of recruiters.

Ideally your cover letter should be around 4-8 sentences long – anything longer will risk losing the attention of time-strapped recruiters and hiring managers .

Essentially you need to include just enough information to persuade the reader to open up your CV, where the in-depth details will sit.

Sign off professionally

To finish off your cover note, add a professional signature to the bottom, stating your important contact details and information.

This not only provides recruiters with multiple means of contacting you, but it also adds a nice professional appearance to the cover letter, which shows that you know how to conduct yourself in the workplace.

Include the following points;

  • A friendly sign off – e.g. “Warm regards”
  • Your full name
  • Phone number (one you can answer quickly)
  • Email address
  • Profession title
  • Professional social network – e.g. LinkedIn

Here is an example signature;

Warm regards,

Aaron Smith Customer service professional 075557437373 [email protected] LinkedIn

Quick tip : To save yourself from having to write your signature every time you send a job application, you can save it within your email drafts, or on a separate document that you could copy in.

As a result, we reduced our maintenance costs by 40% and enabled the company to focus on more significant opportunities. I believe that this experience, coupled with my passion for continuous improvement and adaptability, makes me a strong candidate for the Scrum Master role in your organization.

Storytelling/Narrative Writing Style Example

As I stood in front of a room full of software developers, I could feel the energy shift – from confusion and skepticism to collaboration and enthusiasm. It was in that moment that I realized the power of agile methodologies and the role a Scrum Master plays in transforming not just the way teams work, but also the way they think.

My journey in the world of Scrum began three years ago when I attended a Certified Scrum Master workshop. As a project manager at the time, I was intrigued by the idea of applying agile principles to improve team efficiency and product quality. Eager to test my newfound skills, I convinced my team to adopt Scrum for our next project. The transition wasn’t easy, but as I facilitated daily stand-ups, sprint planning sessions, and retrospectives, I witnessed the team’s openness to change and their commitment to continuous improvement.

Under my guidance, our team’s productivity increased by 35%, and we successfully delivered our project on time and within budget. This success paved the way for the adoption of agile methodologies across other teams in the organization. My passion for Scrum grew, and I decided to dedicate my career to helping teams unlock their potential as a Scrum Master.

I am excited about the opportunity to bring my experience and enthusiasm to your organization and contribute to the success of your software development teams. Being a strong advocate of continuous learning, I stay updated with the latest trends in agile methodologies and enjoy sharing my knowledge through coaching and mentoring.

Are you a scrum master looking for an example of a resume and cover letter? Scrum masters must pair highly technical training with organizational and communication skills, and you'll want your job-seeking materials to stress your specific qualifications.

Take the time to match your qualifications to the job description, then use your cover letter to show the employer why you're a strong candidate for the job. Be specific about how your qualifications can help the company succeed.

Here's an example of a cover letter for a scrum master position, as well as a scrum master resume example, further down.

What to Include in a Scrum Master Cover Letter

Cover letters are essential parts of most job applications because they create a vital first impression. If a hiring manager isn’t impressed by your cover letter, he or she may not bother to review your resume. Here are some tips about what to include in your letter.

Highlight your relevant qualifications.  Cover letters aren’t biographies; they are marketing documents that should “pitch” one’s expertise to the employer. Thus, the majority of the one-page cover letter’s “real estate” should be devoted to demonstrating how your skill set, training, and experience have equipped you with the “Preferred Qualifications” listed on the job posting.

Provide examples. Consider including at least one detailed description of a successful project you’ve managed, including quantifiable statistics such as budget figures, project cost savings, or initial sales following the product launch.

Incorporate select keywords. Many hiring companies now used sophisticated applicant tracking systems (ATS) to provide an initial review of the applications they receive. Programmed to rank applications based on the frequency with which they use selected keyword phrases, these systems may eliminate keyword-poor applications from consideration. Using the job advertisement as your guide, select significant keywords (such as “Scrum Master,” “Agile framework,” “project management,” or “software development”) and pepper these scrum master skills generously through both your cover letter and your resume.

Joe Applicant 999 Main Street New York, New York 10003 555-555-5555 joe.applicant@email.com

September 1, 2018

Cassandra Lee Director, Human Resources Acme Office Supplies 123 Business Rd. Business City, NY 54321

Dear Mrs. Lee,

This letter is to express my interest in your posting on Dice.com for an experienced, results-oriented, highly-organized Scrum Master. With a Bachelor’s degree in computer science and several years of experience leading high-profile, high-pressure software releases, I have the experience, skills, and results-driven attitude to succeed in this role at your organization.

This year, I ran a successful software release on a shoestring budget. With fewer than six developers, I was able to deliver a polished final product on time and within the predetermined budget of $30,000. Through daily meetings, detailed project timelines, and the removal of project roadblocks, I assisted in the release of a product that received positive media and industry reviews.

Throughout my career, I’ve become an expert on the Agile framework for project management and the Scrum evangelist for each company I’ve worked for. I value my role in an organization and aspire to help others interested in becoming a Scrum Master. I am active in various professional organizations and continuously look for software and methods to improve the Scrum process.

I’ve attached a copy of my resume that details my experience. I can be reached anytime via my cell phone, 555-555-5555, or via email at joe.applicant@email.com. Thank you for your time and consideration. I look forward to speaking with you about this employment opportunity.

Best Regards,

Your Signature (hard copy letter)

Joe Applicant

If you're sending your cover letter via email, list your name and the job title in the subject line of the email message:

Subject:  Scrum Master Position - Your Name

Include your contact information in your email signature, and don't list the employer contact information. Start your  email message  with the salutation.

Looking to make your resume stand out from the competition? Here are a few proven strategies to make your resume shine.

  • Include a resume summary.  Also called a “qualifications summary” or a resume summary statement, a resume summary at the beginning of your resume is an effective way to concisely present the professional accomplishments and qualifications that make you a strong candidate for the job.
  • Showcase key projects.  Providing examples of successful projects you’ve managed will catch the hiring manager’s eye and help ensure you land a personal interview. There are two good ways to do this. You can either create a dedicated “Projects Section,” placing this immediately after your initial resume summary, or you can describe key projects in your “Experience” section. If you take the latter course, highlight these projects as bulleted achievements after each position description. Include the project dates / timeframes, budgets, and outcomes.
  • Incorporate a tech table. Listing your computer skills (software development programs, operating systems, Agile tools) and certifications   in a tech table will help this important information to “pop” on the page. This can be placed within or immediately after your resume summary or at the end of the resume, following the “Education” section.

Ask a friend, mentor, colleague, or career counselor  to proofread and edit your resume for you.

This is an example of a resume for a scrum master. Download the resume template (compatible with Google Docs and Word Online) or see below for more examples.

Key qualities recruiters search for in a candidate’s cover letter

Proven Experience with Scrum Methodology : Highlighting extensive experience with Scrum practices demonstrates the ability to lead agile projects and guide teams through the nuances of the framework.

Leadership and Facilitation Skills : Showcasing leadership experiences emphasizes the capacity to guide and motivate cross-functional teams, mediate disputes, and effectively facilitate meetings (like daily stand-ups, sprint planning, reviews, and retrospectives).

Strong Communication and Interpersonal Abilities : Crucial for articulating project goals, negotiating with stakeholders, and maintaining transparency across the organization.

Coaching and Mentorship : Illustrated by past experiences in coaching teams, product owners, and organizations in adopting Scrum, which reflects the capability to foster continuous improvement and a strong agile mindset.

Conflict Resolution and Problem-Solving Skills : Necessary for navigating the challenges that arise during sprint cycles and balancing differing opinions within the team or between stakeholders and the team.

Adaptability and Flexibility : Demonstrating previous situations where adjusting to changes and leading the team through evolving project requirements was successfully managed is essential in a dynamic agile environment.

How to greet recruiters in your senior scrum master cover letter salutation

As the saying goes, "You never get a second chance to make a first impression."

Write your senior scrum master cover letter salutation to be more personalized to the actual hiring manager, who is set to assess your profile by:

  • greeting them on a first-name basis, if you have previously communicated with them (e.g. "Dear Sam,");
  • using their last name, if you have more formal communication or haven't spoken to them (e.g. "Dear Mr. Harrows" or "Dear Ms. Marshall");
  • writing "Dear HR Team" or "Dear Hiring Manager", if you have no clue about who's recruiting for the role.

Search on LinkedIn, Google, or the company website to find information as to the recruiter's name.

In any case, avoid the impersonal "Dear Sir or Madam".

List of salutations you can use

  • Dear Hiring Manager,
  • Dear [Company Name] Team,
  • Dear [Department Name] Leader,
  • Good Day [Department Name] Team,
  • Respected Hiring Committee,
  • Dear [Mr./Ms./Dr.] [Last Name],

Your senior scrum master cover letter introduction and the value you bring

Moving on from the "Dear Recruiter" to your professional introduction .

Use those first two sentences of your senior scrum master cover letter to present the biggest asset you'd bring to the organization.

Don't go into too much detail about your achievement or the skill set, but instead - go straight for the win.

That is - what is your value as a professional?

Would you be able to build stronger, professional relationships in any type of communication? Or, potentially, integrate seamlessly into the team?

Structuring your senior scrum master cover letter body to add more value

You've hinted at your value as a professional (this may be your passion for the job or interest in the company) in your introduction.

Next, it's time to pan out the body or middle of your senior scrum master cover letter .

When creating your resume, you've probably gone over the advert a million times to select the most relevant skills.

Well, it's time to repeat this activity. Or just copy and paste your previous list of job-crucial requirements.

Then, select one of your past accomplishments, which is relevant and would impress hiring managers.

Write between three and six paragraphs to focus on the value your professional achievement would bring to your potential, new organization.

Tell a story around your success that ultimately shows off your real value as a professional.

Closing remarks to end your senior scrum master cover letter

Of course, you'll have to show gratitude to the recruiters, who have assessed your profile at the end of your senior scrum master cover letter .

A "Thank you for the consideration" would work wonders, instead of the standard "Sincerely yours".

Do you want to make an even better impression?

Close off your senior scrum master cover letter by promising how you see yourself excelling in the role and the positive impact you'd bring about.

A sentence that encourages some further action on the recruiter's end could also be a good way to close off the communication (e.g. provide your availability for an interview).

No experience senior scrum master cover letter: making the most out of your profile

Candidates who happen to have no professional experience use their senior scrum master cover letter to stand out.

Instead of focusing on a professional achievement, aim to quantify all the relevant, transferrable skills from your life experience.

Once again, the best practice to do so would be to select an accomplishment - from your whole career history.

Another option would be to plan out your career goals and objectives: how do you see yourself growing, as a professional, in the next five years, thanks to this opportunity?

Be precise and concise about your dreams, and align them with the company vision.

Key takeaways

Winning at your job application game starts with a clear and concise senior scrum master cover letter that:

  • Has single-spaced paragraphs, is wrapped in a one-inch margin, and uses the same font as the senior scrum master resume;
  • Is personalized to the recruiter (using their name in the greeting) and the role (focusing on your one key achievement that answers job requirements);
  • Includes an introduction that helps you stand out and show what value you'd bring to the company;
  • Substitutes your lack of experience with an outside-of-work success, that has taught you valuable skills;
  • Ends with a call for follow-up or hints at how you'd improve the organization, team, or role.
