PhD students pursue their studies in one of the Operations & Technology, Strategy & Entrepreneurship, Marketing & Analytics, and Organisations & Innovation groups. All four groups offer a unique education and research experience to a small number of highly motivated students, with the intent of preparing them for scholarly careers at the highest level.

PhD studies in Operations and Technology

Across the different research themes , there is a shared interest in management science, operations management and business technologies. Topics of interest include R&D management, innovation and new product development, service systems, supply chain management and healthcare operations. For candidates in this area, a degree in engineering (e.g. industrial, electrical, computer, mechanical etc), economics, mathematics, statistics or operational research is preferred. 

PhD studies in Strategy and Entrepreneurship

S&E faculty research  focuses on understanding what makes firms successful, how they cope with a complex and dynamic environment, and what leads to new business formation and growth. Doctoral training involves close collaboration between the doctoral student and faculty members on shared research interests, coursework at UCL and other institutions, and independent research. Doctoral students also benefit from the S&E group’s collaborative research community, a lively program of research speakers from other institutions, and links with researchers worldwide. Topics of interest include digitization, big data analytics, machine learning, information environment, platform ecosystems, new organisational forms, learning, innovation, competition, interorganisational relationships, corporate strategy, entrepreneurial strategy, entrepreneurship for development, social innovation. 

PhD studies in Marketing and Analytics

Topics of interest in this group include branding, retailing, advertising, pricing, product development, marketing channels, business marketing, marketing strategy and e-commerce. The researchers in this group use diverse quantitative methodologies that include big data analytics, regression analysis, choice models, field experiments and Bayesian econometrics.

PhD studies in Organisations and Innovation

O&I faculty research focuses on understanding individual and team outcomes within organisations. Group members engage with a variety of perspectives and approaches including network research, experiments and ethnographies. There is a shared interest in the topics of creativity, innovation, social networks and diversity. For applicants to the PhD programme, prior training in social science (e.g. social psychology, sociology or economics) is highly relevant. 

PhD studies in Financial Economics

PhD Structure

  • The programme typically consists of five years of full-time study, starting with one year of modules registered as MRes. These modules are typically advanced postgraduate modules to provide rigorous methodological training to prepare students for their PhD research. Along with the School’s modules, students typically take some of these from other UCL departments (e.g., Economics, Psychology, Sociology, Anthropology), the London Business School, Bayes Business School, and Imperial College Business School.
  • In addition to methods modules, students also undertake a first-year research project under the tutoring and supervision of a faculty member later in the MRes year (Term 3 + Summer period).
  • Progression from MRes to PhD is not automatic . Superior performance in taught modules and independent, original research is required for progression from MRes to PhD.
  • Our highly selective and small-sized PhD programme ensures that each student receives personal attention and guidance from our faculty members throughout their doctoral study. The close mentorship process forms the foundations of a successful academic career. 
  • We expect our PhD graduates to have as their goal an academic career as a faculty member in a top business school or engineering department of a world-class university
  • PhD applications are reviewed once a completed application form has been submitted online . 

Students take a total of 180 credits in the MRes year. This is made up of the MRes Research Project:

  • MSIN0135 - MRes Research Project: 8,000-10,000 words . 105 credits.

Students take 75 credits of taught modules, of which the following three are compulsory modules:

  • MSIN0131 - Research Presentation and Critical Writing Skills . 15 credits
  • MSIN0132 - Seminar in Organisation Theory . 15 credits
  • MSIN0240 - Designing Management Research Projects.  15 credits

Finally, students choose elective modules (15 credits each) among those offered by the School of Management, other UCL Departments (e.g., Economics, Psychology), and partner universities in London.

Students can take additional (non-credit) modules at UCL and our partners schools in the remaining years to complement their learning, but there is no requirement to take modules after the MRes year.

The programme is delivered through a combination of lectures, seminars, and class discussion based on case studies and other activities. Student performance is assessed through simulations, presentations, coursework, group projects, class participation, and examinations. 

Students typically study 3 compulsory modules over Terms 1 and 2. Students will also typically study 2 optional modules which may take place in Terms 1, 2 or 3. Students will also undertake a substantial research project, which would usually be undertaken over Terms 2 and 3. 

Each taught module is delivered over 10 weeks, with 3 contact hours per week comprising lecture content and interactive components. 

In addition, students typically spend approximately 6-8 hours a week for each module on assessment and independent study to further develop the skills and knowledge covered in lectures and seminars. The total number of weekly hours will vary according to the weekly activities being undertaken.

Applying for our mres/phd programme.

Entry requirements and admissions criteria:

We seek to recruit highly motivated, ambitious students with strong educational backgrounds. The ideal candidate will have a first-class Bachelor’s degree from the UK or an overseas qualification of equivalent standard from a leading university. We encourage students from a wide variety of backgrounds (e.g, engineering, economics, business, mathematics/statistics, psychology, sociology, and anthropology, among others) to apply to our programme. Also, notice that a Master’s or graduate level degree is not required for admission, you can apply with only an undergraduate (e.g. bachelors) degree. 

In your personal statement you are expected to suggest one or more faculty members as potential supervisors. On the application form you may see that it states that it is preferred that you contact potential supervisors beforehand – you do not need to do so. In fact, applicants are discouraged from randomly contacting individual faculty members or potential supervisors when applying to our programme. All applications are first evaluated by a joint admissions committee, so contacting potential supervisors separately will not increase your chances.

All MRes/PhD applicants are normally expected to take either a GMAT test or GRE test (UCL’s institution code is 3344, but also make sure you include a scanned copy of your test result on your online application), although the School has no minimum score requirements.  

We also require you to submit IELTS or TOEFL scores if English is not your first language. Our School requires a “Level 1” English qualification which corresponds to:

  • IELTS: Overall grade of 6.5 with a minimum of 6.0 in each of the sub-tests.
  • TOEFL: Score of 92, plus 24/30 in the reading and writing subtests and 20/30 in the listening and speaking subtests.  

Application Deadline

The application window closes 01 February 2024 (17:00 UK time) and a late submission window closes on 05 April 2024 (17:00 UK time). We advise those interested in the programme to apply before 01 February 2024, as those applying in the late submission window will only be considered if there are still places remaining.

Apply via UCL Postgraduate Admissions System here . When starting the application, you must select the MRes option. In addition to filling out the online application form, please upload a copy of the following documents:

  • Official Transcripts of Grades / Course marks
  • A 2-3 page personal statement or research proposal* that clearly indicates: (i) which research group you are interested in (i.e., Organisations & Innovation, Strategy & Entrepreneurship, Marketing & Analytics or Operations & Technology, (ii) your research interests and preliminary research ideas, (iii) potential faculty member(s) you may want to work with (this is a suggested list, you don’t need to contact potential supervisors beforehand), and (iv) your motivation to do a PhD.
  • Your  GRE / GMAT  score report**

* While submission of a full research proposal is not required, you can send us one if you have already written it up.

We offer fully funded five year MRes/PhD scholarships in the UCL School of Management to all admitted students. The scholarship is open to all nationalities. It covers all tuition fees, and includes an annual stipend of £25,000, which is tax-free.

Additional costs 

This programme does not have any compulsory additional costs outside of purchasing books or stationery, printing, thesis binding or photocopying.  

Students may have the opportunity to participate in conferences in the UK and internationally. The UCL School of Management provides MRes/PhD students with an annual budget for conferences, which students will use to cover the travel, accommodation, food and other costs whilst at conferences, in line with UCL’s expenses policy.

The MRes and PhD in Financial Economics is a joint programme between the UCL Department of Economics and the UCL School of Management.

The MRes programme is the first year of the five-year integrated MRes/PhD programme in Financial Economics. The MRes programme will provide you with training in research methods together with an advanced understanding of financial economics, to enable you to conduct insightful and original PhD level research in financial economics. 

The MRes will firstly provide quantitative training in microeconomics, macroeconomics, econometrics, and finance. These will be taught in the context of cutting-edge research and relevant applications. Secondly, it will provide you with analytic frameworks and transferable skills that will allow you to identify relevant and promising research topics, present ideas in order to obtain feedback, and provide feedback yourself. 

The subsequent years (for students who progress from the MRes to MPhil) will focus on the skills you will need to run research projects to completion and to present completed research projects to various kinds of specialised audiences. Likewise, teaching skills will also be developed.

PhD Structure

  • The MRes programme consists of taught modules (Microeconomics, Macroeconomics, Econometrics. Real Analysis and Probability with Economic Application), a hybrid module (Financial Economics) with taught components and research based components, and a research project in the final part of the year. For the MRes project, you work under supervision to design and carry out a substantial piece of original research. This enables you to gain a deep understanding of the entire research process.
  • Superior performance is required for automatic progression from MRes to MPhil. In particular, students should achieve an average mark of not less than 60% in the independent, original research components of the programme, and not less than 50% in the taught element.
  • Our highly selective and small-sized PhD programme ensures that each student receives personal attention and guidance from our faculty members throughout their doctoral study. The close mentorship process forms the foundations of a successful academic career. At the same time, you will be part of both the School of Management PhD cohort and the Economics PhD cohort, with which you will share most of the taught modules.
  • We expect our PhD graduates to have as their goal an academic career as a faculty member in a top business school or Economics department or in the research group of an international institution or a central bank.

Students take a total of 180 credits in the MRes year. This is made up of the MRes Research Project (MSIN0135) and 75 credits of compulsory taught modules. 

All modules in the MRes year are core modules, there are no optional modules.

Students will study 4 compulsory taught modules. A typical taught module is taught over two terms (2 x 10 weeks) with 4 hours of contact hours per week (3 hours of lecture + 1 hour of review session). In addition, students spend approximately 6-8 hours a week for each module on assessment and independent study to further develop the skills and knowledge covered in lectures and seminars.  

Students will also undertake a substantial research project, which would usually start in Term 2 and be completed over the Summer. The total number of weekly hours will vary according to the weekly activities being undertaken.

We only have a single intake in September. We accept applications throughout the year. Successful candidates who have submitted their MRes application by 31 January 2024 will receive a scholarship (full fee waiver plus a stipend). Successful candidates who have submitted their application after this date may receive a scholarship subject to availability, or will come with their own funding.

Taking a PhD into Clinical Trials

Hi Mariam, what are you up to now?

I manage a large multi-site (30 hospitals in the UK, 3 in the Netherlands) CTIMP clinical trial. As part of the study we collect samples to analyse and store in a biobank, therefore the trial also involves five university labs. These labs are based in different areas of the country because the samples need to reach the lab within four hours of being taken from a patient.  Part of my role is to coordinate all of the logistics.

Walk us through your journey from PhD to your current role.

After my PhD, I was awarded a one-year Royal Society fellowship which allowed me to conduct research in France, and this was then extended by 6 months with a French fellowship.  When I came back to the UK, I was a post-doc for three years in the Department of Pharmacology at Cambridge.  After that I started a family, and at that point gave up lab research. When I returned to work less than a year after having my first child, I took up a desk job as a Research Development Officer at UCL’s Department of Oncology. The role was part-time, three days a week, which worked well for me with my new family. After another break to have my second child, I moved into a Campus Manager role at the Whittington Hospital for UCL’s Medical School. I was in this post for seven years and then I worked for a year as an Executive Researcher for UCL’s Department of Speech and Language Therapy, all part time.

When I decided to start working full time again, I decided I also wanted to move into clinical trials. It was quite tough to get into because everyone was asking for experience. I had a lot of work experience of course, of management and research, as well as finance management, but none in clinical trials directly. It might have been easier to get in as a Trial Administrator or an Assistant Clinical Trial Manager, but because I had so much experience I wanted to go in at a more senior level.  So, to upskill, I attended courses that were offered to staff at UCL about clinical trials and Good Clinical Practice (GCP). I made a lot of applications and eventually, helped by the extra courses as well as my experience in management, research, universities, and the hospital environment, I was luckily able to secure my current role. I have been in post for five years now. I joined the team from the start of the project, so I had to amend the protocol, submit the ethics and MHRA approval documents, and prepare all of the associated paperwork for running a multi-centre clinical trial.

What does an average day look like?

It’s very busy and varied, as I’m entirely responsible for all aspects of the trial management, including the finances. At the beginning of a trial there is a lot of documentation to prepare. Now as the trial is underway, I’m monitoring progress, making sure the data is clean, organising training sessions for sites to help them follow the protocol, liaising with people working on the trial, arranging for samples to be stored at the biobank, managing the trial medication and the randomisation system, documenting what is happening on the trial, writing reports for the Trial Steering Committee meetings, and managing the trial assistant and trial monitor. It’s never boring!

What are the best bits?

I like that the work is very varied. And the most rewarding part is when people come back to me and comment that the trial documents have been well written, that everything has been well run and explained, and that the sites have been well supported. People are appreciative of what I do, which feels very nice.

What are the downsides?

At times it can be overwhelming, so a good trial manager must keep calm. Sometimes people do the wrong thing over and over again, or College Finance Departments are under pressure and so they don’t process invoices for payment on time, making hospitals and other stakeholders complain because they haven’t been paid. All of that can be very frustrating, but you must keep a cool head.

Is a PhD required for this role?

It’s preferable for you to have a science background so you understand some of the terminology. A PhD is not required, but it does help you develop a range of skills, such as analytical and writing skills, writing documents, manuals, SOPs etc. – as well as a good understanding of how research works, which you need for this role. For these reasons, a PhD graduate can likely enter clinical trials work at a higher level, maybe an Assistant Trial Manager, than someone without a PhD, who may have to begin by processing samples for clinical trials in the lab.

Whether you have a PhD or not, you must be dedicated in this role, and you must have a good eye for detail. You have to be a careful reader, and be able to write very clear, logical, precise, accurate documents that people can follow. You have to submit a lot of documentation to various bodies, and the information you submit has to be accurate. A single small mistake, even just a typo, can lead to you having to revise and submit again.

Where do people tend to go if they move on from a Clinical Trials Manager role?

There are a lot of opportunities in the pharmaceutical industry, contract research organizations (CROs), university clinical departments, Clinical Trials Units, hospital Research and Development Departments etc. You could move on to a senior role, manage several trials, or manage a clinical trial unit.

What tips do you have for researchers wanting to move into Clinical Trials Management?

It’s a really good idea to learn more about clinical trials. There are loads of courses, and especially if you’re already in the university sector they should be easy to access. The first thing you should seek out is a Good Clinical Practice (GCP) session, for which you get a certificate. And ask to follow/shadow someone who is running a clinical trial. There are many people out there who are quite willing to mentor or at least have a one-off conversation to offer advice. And if you don’t feel you have enough experience yet to get in at the manager level, then try for an assistant level, or a sample processing or administrative role, and work your way up from there. You should also try to gain relevant experience while in your current role, such as project management, management of people, and finance management experience.

CLEVELAND — What’s next for CC? 

Caitlin Clark’s brilliant, record-breaking collegiate career has come to an end. The Iowa star, a two-time national player of the year , and the Hawkeyes fell in the national championship game for the second consecutive year as South Carolina capped a perfect season. 

Clark, a logo shooting supernova who captured the hearts and eyes of millions over the past couple seasons while re-writing the scoring record books , will go down as one of the most transcendent stars in all of sports , at all of 22 years old. In a state with a deep history of hoops known for producing stellar women's basketball players , Clark stands above the rest.

So what’s next for the Des Moines native? Plenty. And it’s going to be a whirlwind three weeks. 

First up, Clark is projected as the No. 1 pick of the 2024 WNBA Draft , which takes place April 15 in New York. The Indiana Fever have the top pick, and are expected to take Clark and pair her with 2023’s top pick, Aliyah Boston. Boston, a South Carolina standout, was a 2023 WNBA All-Star who averaged 14.5 points and 8.4 rebounds. She’s a force in the paint, and will be the recipient of many Clark passes.

WNBA training camps open April 28, and the Fever’s preseason games are scheduled for May 3 at Dallas and May 10 vs. Atlanta in Indianapolis. The WNBA season officially tips May 14 with the Fever visiting the Sun. It’s likely that so-called "Clarkonomics" will spread to the pros, and the Fever will sell out their first game, if not all of their home games. 

Indiana will play 26 games before the Olympic break begins July 21. The pause for the Paris Games runs through Aug. 14. 

Will Clark be busy during that period? 

Though she’s missing USA Basketball’s last training camp — it took place this week, while Clark was still with Iowa — she could still be put on the roster . The Americans are going for their seventh consecutive gold medal, and are the favorites going into Paris. Putting Clark on the Olympic team would certainly increase viewership.

Olympic team or not, many — including four-time WNBA champion Sue Bird — believe Clark will make the WNBA All-Star team in her rookie season. The WNBA All-Stars are scheduled to play an exhibition against the Olympic team July 20. 

Clark has enough major endorsement deals that will travel with her to the pros that she’s not expected to play overseas in the winter, which many WNBA players do to supplement their income. (As a rookie, Clark will be able to earn a max salary of $76,535, but she’ll be eligible for incentives, including bonuses related to winning the Commissioner’s Cup.)

All told, it’s going to be a very busy few months. 

UW-Madison, other UW campuses to offer six weeks of paid parental leave

The University of Wisconsin System is becoming more family friendly.

Employees will receive six weeks of paid parental leave after the birth or adoption of a child under a new policy bringing UW campuses in line with many other universities across the country. The policy takes effect July 1.

UW employees previously cobbled together vacation time, sick days or unpaid leave. In some extreme cases, employees relied on the kindness of their supervisors to secure time off.

Amber Saylor Mase arrived at UW-Madison for her postdoctoral research fellowship in 2014, a few months before her baby was due. Postdocs at the time didn't even receive vacation or sick time they could save up to use in the weeks after a birth, she said.

"The standard was: You get nothing," she recalled. "Be happy with what you can get."

Offering paid parental leave, Mase said, sends a strong message to women working at Wisconsin's public universities.

"I think the new policy shows some sense of 'We do value you," she said. "'We want to give you time to recover from this life event, bond with your baby and then come back to work.'"

Paid parental leave push began in 2013

The new benefit comes after a decade of discussion and advocacy at UW-Madison.

Adena Rissman, a UW-Madison professor in the department of forest and wildlife ecology, got involved in the push for paid parental leave after having her son in 2012. Even more of a motivating factor for her was seeing the trouble her postdoc, Mase, went through to receive time off.

"We were scrambling," Rissman said. "Expecting parents don’t have time to waste trying to understand complicated HR systems. I felt it was inefficient and unjust and really getting in the way of our research."

The lack of paid parental leave also hindered employee recruitment, Rissman said. She recalled several search committees she served on where it came up.

"It is not the conversation we would prefer to spend our time on when we're trying to recruit someone new to explain why we don't have a benefit that the majority of our peers offer," Rissman said.

Mase said she was able to negotiate for six weeks of paid maternity leave but the experience made her feel guilty for taking time off work. It also reinforced the power imbalance of her situation.

"I definitely would have appreciated a more standardized process for when this very common situation happens, of having a baby, versus, (feeling) like, 'Oh they're making an exception for me or going out of their way to accommodate me,'" Mase said.

Mase started her fellowship with the hope of becoming a tenure-track professor. The lack of recovery time after delivery played a part in her decision to pursue a less-intensive staff position. She now works as an evaluation specialist with UW-Madison Extension.

A lack of paid parental leave "creates a lot of stress on women trying to pursue that career path," she said.

UW-Madison report, petition drew attention to lack of paid family leave

Momentum for paid parental leave has built over the past year.

Democratic Gov. Tony Evers proposed a 12-week paid family leave program for public and private sector workers last spring. The GOP-controlled Legislature, however, declined to fund the program.

Last summer, a group co-chaired by Rissman released a report with a dozen recommendations on how to better support employees and their families, including 12 weeks of paid family leave. The report identified multiple problems with UW-Madison's leave policies, including employees receiving no guidance on how to take maternity leave and supervisors potentially attempting to shorten or prevent unpaid leave, which may run afoul of the federal gender-discrimination law.

In February, the UW-Madison graduate student union delivered a petition calling for paid parental leave benefits to the chancellor's office. More than 700 people had signed it, including 84 who provided personal testimonies.

Paid parental leave is widely supported in Wisconsin

A 2022 poll by Marquette Law School Poll underscored the public's widespread, bipartisan support for this benefit. About 73% of registered voters favored mandating employers to provide new parents with paid leave.

A UW-Madison survey of 19 private sector employers found employers within southcentral Wisconsin offer eight weeks of paid leave, and employers within southeast Wisconsin offer 10 weeks of paid leave for the childbearing parent.

In the higher education sector, UW-Madison reported about half of institutions in Illinois, Indiana, Michigan, Ohio and Wisconsin provide an average of six weeks of paid parental leave.

“Coming from the private sector, it was kind of shocking that we didn’t do this," UW Regent Ashok Rai said during a recent board meeting.

Paid parental leave estimated to be low-cost benefit

UW officials estimate the annual cost of the program across the 13 universities will be about just shy of $460,000. A little over a third of the cost will be funded with taxpayer dollars.

Staff salaries are budgeted, so the campus already bears the cost of backfilling positions when employees need to take time off, said Daniel Chanen, who leads human resources for the UW System. That makes the cost relatively modest.

Some graduate workers left out of policy

The parental leave policy for UW-Madison covers lecturers and graduate assistants. The UW System policy, however, doesn't cover the roughly 1,400 graduate workers at other UW campuses, including nearly 1,000 at UW-Milwaukee.

UW System spokesperson Ethan Schuh said paid parental leave is being provided to employees who have general leave benefits, which includes UW-Madison graduate assistants. But UW is not expanding leave eligibility to new groups of employees.

Maddie Topf, co-president of UW-Madison's Teaching Assistants Association, said lack of parental leave is one of the most commonly cited concerns the union heard from its members. It left graduate students with difficult choices: Delay degree progression, wait to start a family or drop out.

"It really affects your degree if you do not have access to this benefit; it affects your life," she said. "Choosing whether to start a family and if they do, how their degree progress is affected, is a heavy decision to be made without paid leave."
