Learning Recovery: What’s the best way to support learning recovery in middle-grade math? Should schools stay focused on grade-level standards while trying to address critical learning gaps as best as they can? Or should they systematically address individual students’ unfinished learning from prior years so they can ultimately catch back up — even if that means spending meaningful time teaching below-grade skills? This could have lasting consequences: Students with failing grades tend to have less access to advanced courses in high school, and a failing grade in even one ninth-grade course can lower a student’s chances of graduating on time. School Safety: Last April, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention made clear that having good ventilation and wearing masks consistently are far more effective at preventing the spread of COVID-19 than disinfecting surfaces. Homeschooling Is on the Rise. What Should That Teach Education Leaders About Families’ Preferences?

Disenrollment: With school closures, student quarantines and tensions over mask requirements, vaccine mandates and culture war issues, families’ lives have been upended in ways few could have imagined 18 months ago. Education and Schooling from Several Perspectives Essay

Position statement, philosophical arguments, ideological arguments, theoretical arguments, historical arguments.

Education and schooling are sometimes used interchangeably but may not necessarily have the same meaning. The position of the researcher is that education is the process of gaining new knowledge, enlightened experience, values, habits, skills, and beliefs to enable the survival of an individual in a given society. Nicholson (2016) simply defines education as “an enlightening experience” (p. 34). One can be educated through the formal context of going to school to gain new insights through informal institutions or personal life experiences. It means that one must not necessarily go to school to be educated. On the other hand, Allen and Goddard (2017) define schooling is as “education received at school” (p. 85). As shown in this definition, schooling refers to education that one gains through formal programs offered in institutions of learning from pre-kindergarten to institutions of higher education.

The position of the researcher is that the primary purpose of schooling, based on the position of the researcher, is to have a standardized approach of passing a set of skills and knowledge to a group of people so that they can perform specific tasks in society. Doctors and engineers need schooling to enable them to understand the standard practice in these fields to avoid critical mistakes that may have devastating consequences. These people cannot afford to make mistakes because people may lose their lives. Schooling makes it possible for them to learn systematic procedures that they have to follow to realize success. In this essay, the researcher will discuss these two concepts from philosophical, ideological, theoretical, and historical points of view.

When trying to define what education is, different philosophers have explained different concepts based on their personal beliefs and experiences. In this section, it is important to focus on educational philosophies that support the personal philosophy stated above. These definitions can be classified broadly into four categories, which include perennials, essentialism, progressivism, and reconstructionism. Perennials argue that education is the process through which learners acquire an understanding of Western civilization (Chand, 2017). This philosophy has faced massive criticism from scholars because of its emphasis on Western civilization (Allen & Goddard, 2017). It creates the perception that any knowledge gained outside of the context of Western civilization cannot be considered education. However, those who support this argument explain that modern-day education all over the world is based on Western civilization. The language and pattern of teaching may be different, but the basic concepts are focused on civilization championed by western nations.

Essentialism holds that education is based on a common core of knowledge that can only be transmitted to learners in a disciplined and systematic way (Nicholson, 2016). It holds that education goes beyond imparting intellectual standards on students. Through education, learners should also acquire morals that society considers acceptable. Although it has some similarities with perennials, the main difference is that essentialism holds the belief that core curriculum may change, and they should not necessarily be based on the Western culture. Education should help students to become responsible members of their society. As such, the primary focus of educators should not be to equip learners with concepts based on Western civilization but on issues that affect their society. Learners can only be considered educated if they have the willingness and capacity to address local problems.

Progressivism holds the view that education is an active learning process where students take active roles through experience and experimentation (Allen & Goddard, 2017). The philosophy is against the idea that learners should be restricted to the specific content of education passed down to them based on a specific rigid curriculum or as the educators may desire. Instead, it should be a proactive process where learners are expected to have experience and do conduct experiments. The product of education is to have individuals who are thinkers and problem solvers instead of having people who have to be directed even on the simplest of the tasks. In this context, books and learning materials are considered tools other than sources of authority (Chand, 2017). They should help an individual to solve a given problem independently based on the prevailing conditions instead of strictly defining how to address the issue.

Social reconstructionism is a philosophy that holds the argument that education focuses on addressing social questions with the goal of creating a better, just, and democratic global society (Rankin, 2018). It goes beyond the concept of empowering individuals learners and embraces the idea of creating a better world. An educated individual should be capable of identifying social problems and defining solutions that society considers acceptable. The above philosophies support the position of the researcher that education should entail gaining new knowledge and experience.

Philosophers have also defined the purpose of schooling in different ways based on varying contexts. Great philosophers such as Socrates, Plato, Aristotle, Immanuel Kant, Karl Marx, and Niccolò Machiavelli have all expressed what they believe should be the purpose of schooling. It is important to note that the technological, social, political, and economic changes that have been witnessed since some of these great philosophers defined the purpose of education make it necessary to focus on recent philosophers such as John Dewey and George Counts. John Dewey argued that “the primary purpose of education and schooling is not so much to prepare students to live a useful life but to teach them how to live pragmatically and immediately in their current environment” (Nicholson, 2016, p. 88). This philosopher believes that the purpose of education is to equip the learner will skills that would make them pragmatic and capable of responding to forces in the immediate environment.

George Counts believes that “the purpose of school is less about preparing individuals to live independently and more about preparing individuals to live as members of a society” (Rankin, 2018, p. 41). Through schooling, one learns how to live harmoniously with others and to work together as a team to address common challenges. It explains why schooling emphasizes the need to bring together different learners in a classroom setting. Besides the curriculum taught to them, students learn how to express themselves, respect their colleagues and teachers, and work in teams towards a common goal. They are taught to be responsible members of society who know how to enjoy their rights and freedoms without infringing upon that of others. Chand (2017) argues that in almost every workplace environment, teamwork is necessary. As such, learners should know how to engage their colleagues with the aim of solving common challenges as a team. The philosophies are in line with the position of the researcher that the purpose of schooling is to have a standardized approach of teaching that helps learners to discover and pursue their different interests.

In this section, the researcher will focus on ideological concepts that support the position of the researcher, as stated in the first section of this report. From an ideological perspective, education can be defined using the concepts of nationalism, ethnonationalism, liberalism, or Marxism. The concept of nationalism in this context holds that education is a learning process that promotes a national spirit (Allen & Goddard, 2017). It means that one would be considered educated if they understand national challenges and focus on finding ways of addressing them. As such, patriotism is one of the most important factors that define education in this context.

Ethno-nationalism, on the other hand, maintains that education is a tool that should empower people to be loyal to a given racial or ethnic group (Rankin, 2018). Instead of focusing on the need for an individual to be patriotic to their nation as defined in nationalism, ethnonationalism holds that an individual should remain loyal and protective of their race or ethnic background. It means that Americans should not pledge their loyalty to the United States if they feel the national instruments unfairly target members of their race irrespective of their location on earth. This approach of defining education has been criticized as being divisive and detrimental to national growth. However, its proponents argue that it is unrealistic for an educated person to support the same government that is frustrating members of their race.

Liberalism as an ideology holds that education should liberate learners. Through education, one should understand the due process of the law and lead a life free from the shackles of ignorance (Ahmad, 2017). The liberty will make an individual understand their roles and responsibilities and the relationship that should exist between citizens and their government. The concept also holds that learners should understand the concept of equity and that every citizen is entitled to enjoy the opportunities that the country has to offer. Therefore, one’s success should be defined by one’s commitment, intelligence, and sometimes luck, instead of race, gender, or political affiliations. Marxism refers to ideological principles propagated in the 19 th century by Karl Marx (Rankin, 2018). The ideology views education as a process through which children are empowered to face life as equal contenders despite the possible socio-economic differences (Allen & Goddard, 2017). Through education, the child of a peasant will be capable of tapping into opportunities within the country in the same way as a child from a rich family. These ideologies emphasize the need for an educational process to enhance the survival skills of a learner, as indicated in the purpose statement.

According to Rankin (2018), the purpose of schooling can be defined from an ideological perspective in different ways. Ahmad (2017) argued that schools exist primarily to serve a practical credentialing function in society. Learning is often based on addressing specific societal issues. In the United States, there has been an attempt to redefine the common core state standards (CCSS) to ensure that learners are equipped to deal with various challenges from a practical perspective. Although schooling sometimes involves imparting theoretical concepts in the mind of a learner, the intended goal can only be realized if the learner can implement the concepts in a practical concept. Allen and Goddard (2017) argue that the desire by educationists to focus more on competency-based learning programs is informed by the fact that the traditional schooling system emphasized more on improving learner’s literacy than their practical skills.

According to Chand (2017), “the role of schooling was to equip individuals with the skills necessary to participate in the social life of their community and to change the nature of the social order as needed or desired” (p. 74). In this context, schooling is defined as the process of equipping learners with skills needed for them to engage in social activities within the community. The process makes learners become agents of change in the community instead of being part of the forces that resist change. Rankin (2018) explains that resisting change can be detrimental to the success of an organization or a community. Many people are often opposed to change because of the fear of lacking the capacity to operate successfully under the new system. Schooling should equip an individual with relevant skills that would enable them to work under different settings and to understand when it is necessary to change from one system to another. These arguments support the purpose of schooling defined in the position statement.

Scholars have used theoretical concepts to define education and the purpose of schooling. In this section of the report, the researcher will look at some of the educational theories that support the purpose statement stated in the previous section. Behaviorism holds that the concept of education refers to the modification of the behavior of an individual as a way of making them fit in a given social setting (Allen & Goddard, 2017). Education should make people learn to embrace a given behavior that society considers acceptable. The process may sometimes require the use of reinforcements as a way of modifying one’s behavior. As such, it is acceptable for educationists to use reward when one exhibits acceptable behavior and punishment as a way of discouraging irresponsible or antisocial practices. As Nicholson (2016) puts it, it may be necessary for educators to use any means possible and permissible to promote responsible behavior.

Constructivism defines education as a process of empowering people to be responsible for defining their understanding of the world based on their experience and the immediate environment. It discourages the idea of making learners have a similar point of view to a given issue. For instance, water is a source of life, but it can also be a source of natural disasters (Ahmad, 2017). Insisting that people view water as a source of life without taking into consideration other factors may be an irresponsible approach to education. Broadening the mind of the learner makes it possible for them to know how to address the issue of water in their immediate environment. For those in deserts, they should learn how to sink boreholes or find other means of making the resource available. On the other hand, those in areas prone to floods should find ways of harvesting this resource while at the same time protecting people and other valuables from its destructive force. These two theories demonstrate that values and beliefs are as critical as skills and determination, and as such, education should focus on these factors, just as stated in the purpose statement.

The theoretical concept of humanism holds that one of the cardinal purposes of education is to guide learners towards self-actualization. Many people fail to achieve their full potential in life because they do not understand their true calling and capabilities in life. An individual talented in football may be forced to pursue a career in medicine because they have impressive academic performance, while another who has an interest in pursuing a career in law is convinced to settle on acting because of the perceived dismal academic performance. Such an individual can never reach self-actualization because of the constant feeling that they are not in their desired career.

Schooling should make it possible for an individual to understand not only the personal capabilities but also interests and desires in life (Chand, 2017). The schooling system should be designed in a way that makes educators aware of the fact that a school brings together people with different skills, interests, and capabilities, and therefore, they should not be forced into a universal path towards a given career. Instead, these institutions should help learners to identify careers they can pursue perfectly based on the identified abilities. The argument supports the definition of the purpose of schooling, as stated in the purpose statement.

In this final section of the report, it is necessary to look at the explanation of how the philosophy of education, as stated in the position statement, is rooted in the history of education in the United States. The United States Department of Education has historically been focused on aligning the education system with the needs of society. As stated in the position stated above, the educationists in this country understand the fact that education should be a process that empowers learners to survive in the community despite changes that are always witnessed because of technology and other forces. In 2002, President George W. Bush signed into law the No Child Left Behind Act (NCLB) as a way of ensuring that the education system in the country would ensure that every child is empowered despite the socio-economic background. It was meant to address the problem where the education system in the country worked in favor of the rich at the expense of the poor. In 2009, President Barack Obama signed into law Race to the Top (RTT) to help standardize the education system in the country based on the emerging issues. The government realized that it was necessary to align the education system with the changing socio-economic and political forces.

The common core state standards (CCSS) introduced in 2010 was a historical milestone in an effort to ensure that the educational system in the country upholds values and principles cherished in the society besides importing skills and experience that learners would need in the workplace environment. Weaknesses that existed in the previous system had to be addressed through this new system. According to Rankin (2018), “From a historical perspective, the purpose of schooling has been tied to social and economic needs” (p. 67). Just like in the position statement, the history of education in the United States has always focused on economically empowering learners. It has always been designed in a way that enables the student to become successful entrepreneurs or to pursue different careers. Ahmad (2017) explains that schooling should make an individual become economically responsible to self and to society.

School Is for Everyone

For the majority of human history, most people didn’t go to school. Formal education was a privilege for the Alexander the Greats of the world, who could hire Aristotles as private tutors.

Starting in the mid-19th century, the United States began to establish truly universal, compulsory education. It was a social compact: The state provides public schools that are free and open to all. And children, for most of their childhood, are required to receive an education. Today, nine out of 10 do so in public schools.

To an astonishing degree, one person, Horace Mann, the nation’s first state secretary of education, forged this reciprocal commitment. The Constitution doesn’t mention education. In Southern colonies, rich white children had tutors or were sent overseas to learn. Teaching enslaved people to read was outlawed. Those who learned did so by luck, in defiance or in secret.

But Mann came from Massachusetts, the birthplace of the “common school” in the 1600s, where schoolmasters were paid by taking up a collection from each group of households. Mann expanded on that tradition. He crossed the state on horseback to visit every schoolhouse, finding mostly neglected, drafty old wrecks. He championed schools as the crucible of democracy — his guiding principle, following Thomas Jefferson, was that citizens cannot sustain both ignorance and freedom.

An essential part of Mann’s vision was that public schools should be for everyone and that children of different class backgrounds should learn together. He pushed to draw wealthier students away from private schools, establish “normal schools” to train teachers (primarily women), have the state take over charitable schools and increase taxes to pay for it all.

He largely succeeded. By the early 20th century all states had free primary schools, underwritten by taxpayers, that students were required to attend.

And that’s more or less how America became the nation we recognize today. The United States soon boasted one of the world’s highest literacy rates among white people. It is hard to imagine how we could have established our industrial and scientific might, welcomed newcomers from all over the world, knit our democracy back together after the Civil War and become a wealthy nation with high living standards without schoolhouses.

The consensus on schooling has never been perfect. Private schools older than the nation continue to draw the elite. Public schools in many parts of the country were segregated by law until the mid-20th century, and they are racially and economically segregated to this day.

But Mann’s inclusive vision is under particular threat right now. Extended school closures during the coronavirus pandemic effectively broke the social compact of universal, compulsory schooling.

School closures threw our country back into the educational atomization that characterized the pre-Mann era. Wealthy parents hired tutors for their children; others opted for private and religious schools that reopened sooner; some had no choice but to leave their children alone in the house all day or send them to work for wages while the schoolhouse doors were closed.

Students left public schools at a record rate and are still leaving, particularly in the blue states and cities that kept schools closed longer. Scores on the National Assessment of Educational Progress (known as the Nation’s Report Card) dropped significantly this year: 9-year-olds lost ground in math for the first time since the test came out in the 1970s, and scores in reading fell by the largest margin in more than three decades. The drop in math was much worse for Black students than for their white peers. Home-schooling is on the rise, private schools have gained students, and an unknown number have dropped out altogether; Los Angeles said up to 50,000 students were absent on the first day of class this year. Teachers are experiencing intense burnout, and schools have many staff vacancies.

Meanwhile, a well-funded, decades-old movement that wants to do away with public school as we know it is in ascendance.

This movement rejects Mann’s vision that schools should be the common ground where a diverse society discovers how to live together. Instead, it believes families should educate their children however they wish, or however they can. It sees no problem with Republican schools for Republican students, Black schools for Black students, Christian schools for Christian students and so on, as long as those schools are freely chosen. Recent Supreme Court decisions open the door to both prayer in schools and public funding of religious education, breaking with Mann’s nonsectarian ideal.

If we want to renew the benefits that public schools have brought to America, we need to recommit to the vision Mann advocated. Our democracy sprouts in the nursery of public schools — where students grapple together with our messy history and learn to negotiate differences of race, class, gender and sexual orientation. Freedom of thought will wilt if schools foist religious doctrine of any kind onto students. And schools need to be enriched places, full of caring adults who have the support and resources they need to teach effectively.

Without public education delivered as a public good, the asylum seeker in detention, the teenager in jail, not to mention millions of children growing up in poverty, will have no realistic way to get the instruction they need to participate in democracy or support themselves. And students of privilege will stay confined in their bubbles. Americans will lose the most powerful social innovation that helps us construct a common reality and try, imperfectly, to understand one another.

It’s a testament to the success of our schools that it took the pandemic shutdowns for many people to see all the essential roles they play in society. The length of these closures made the United States an outlier among other wealthy nations. They forced Americans to ask themselves: What is school for?

For Melissa Henderson , a single mother of five in Georgia, school was a safe place for her kids. With schools and day cares closed in May 2020, she left her 14-year-old daughter in charge of her younger siblings. Ms. Henderson was arrested and charged with reckless conduct.

For Alexis, a 10-year-old on Maui, school was a place to be with her friends. She has a rare genetic condition and is autistic. When schools closed, she went from a “happy, bubbly, loving-life child” to “flat and empty and not really there — like a robot,” said her mother , Vanessa Ince. Alexis regressed from walking to crawling, went back to wearing diapers and stopped using a communication device.

For Osvaldo Rivas Santiago, a 15-year-old growing up in foster care in Vancouver, Wash., school was where he set goals for himself and excelled. He had trouble willing himself to stay focused with remote learning.

“It impacts your motivation,” he told me. “You tend to not really care about school at all.”

The shutdowns reminded Americans that schools provide vital services besides learning. Randi Weingarten, president of the American Federation of Teachers, slammed “people who saw teachers as glorified babysitters” before the pandemic. But the fact is, public school is the nation’s major source of free child care for working families. Moreover, tens of millions of children depend on school for meals, safety, special education services and therapies, and English language learning.

They are also hubs of community togetherness.

I live around the corner from my daughter’s public elementary school in Brooklyn, a sprawling brick building dating to 1895. At the start of the pandemic, the cheerful daily rush of cargo bikes, scooters and children walking to school gave way to an eerie silence punctuated by the howl of ambulances.

Without the ability to meet in person regularly, some neighborly relationships curdled. Someone removed the schoolyard’s Black Lives Matter and Pride flags, and suspicions flew. Here and across the country, school board and P.T.A. meetings moved online and sometimes stretched into the wee hours of the night as parents yelled themselves hoarse over reopening protocols and varying responses to the nation’s racial upheaval.

Some Americans missed schools when they were closed, and others distanced themselves. The extended blue state closures were a failure on the part of Democrats, who have historically been the party that Americans trust over Republicans when it comes to education. That trust eroded during the pandemic, as many Democratic governors and mayors seemed unable to balance families’ needs with fears of a deadly virus. Today, the few union leaders and other educators who have impugned or outright denied the existence of learning loss are coming pretty close to arguing that public schools accomplish nothing. If being at home for a year and a half didn’t have any negative impact on children, why do we need school?

All of this emboldened a movement on the right that has for more than half a century sought to dismantle public education and the idea that Americans from diverse backgrounds should learn alongside one another.

Corey DeAngelis, a fellow at the libertarian Cato Institute, told me that “the teachers unions’ influence on keeping the schools closed for so long” opened the door to expanded alternatives. His dream is a universal voucher program, where taxpayer funds are parceled out directly to families to spend as they wish, with no public school “monopoly.” Meaning, no collectively funded infrastructure to provide education as a public good.

This dream began, more or less, in 1955, when the University of Chicago’s Milton Friedman published the first manifesto arguing for school vouchers to replace publicly administered education. James McGill Buchanan, a University of Chicago-trained economist teaching at the University of Virginia, took the argument further by seizing on the era’s post-Brown v. Board of Education segregationist fervor. As Nancy MacLean summarizes in “Democracy in Chains,” her acclaimed but polarizing 2017 intellectual history of the right in America, Buchanan intuited that if rich white people could be convinced that they were justified in no longer paying for public schools, it opened the door to resist all taxation, all public goods. And he supplied that justification. He came to argue that it was anti-liberty to force people of wealth, a minority, to ante up for goods enjoyed by the majority.

What was called “massive resistance” to integration was so strong that some places in the South chose to close public schools altogether rather than see them integrated. In the fall of 1957, President Dwight Eisenhower called in the 101st Airborne to protect the Little Rock Nine. The next year, the Arkansas Legislature and the governor tried to block desegregation by closing Little Rock’s four public high schools, Black and white, entirely. It became known as the Lost Year. In Prince Edward County, Virginia, officials went even further, closing the schools from 1959 all the way to 1964, while providing private schooling to white children.

This was an outright rejection of Mann’s ideal that Americans should be educated at public schools that serve everyone. And the mark of that rejection remains to this day. Throughout the South, white children attend private schools that began as so-called segregation academies during the civil rights era, while many Black children attend the hollowed-out public schools that white students left behind. And elsewhere the pattern is repeated — in fact, schools in the Northeast are among the most segregated in the country.

The movement Friedman and Buchanan encouraged lives on. Opposition to public education, and the promotion of alternatives like vouchers and for-profit schools, has attracted Catholics long devoted to parochial schools, evangelical Christians and other religious groups, cultural conservatives, corporate capitalists and libertarians. Today they are joined by the millionaires and billionaires who see K-12 education as another sector ripe for disruption.

In other words, the core constituencies of today’s Republican Party, otherwise seemingly so disparate, unite over this one issue. Their shared agenda is to privatize and defund schools.

This movement could have no better avatar than Betsy DeVos, who had never taught in, attended or sent her children to a public school before President Donald Trump named her secretary of education. “I personally think the Department of Education should not exist,” she said in July .

During the pandemic, Ms. DeVos diverted a disproportionate share of federal relief funds to private schools until a judge declared her actions illegal. She proposed a federal school voucher program.

And she declined to direct the Department of Education to track school reopening plans or Covid mitigation strategies, abdicating responsibility for helping districts reopen safely, even as the Trump administration called for them to reopen at any cost. Her approach signaled exactly what the agenda will be if Republicans regain control of the federal government.

And though Mr. Trump is out of office (for now), and Ms. DeVos with him, the Supreme Court justices the former president nominated have opened the door to both prayer in public schools and the public funding of religious schools . Right-wing donors , many of whom have long histories of opposing public education, have backed the activists whipping up a fervor over the treatment of race and queer and trans rights in the classroom. In the eyes of conservative activists, public education is the enemy of the people, alongside the deep state and the mainstream media, and they are working hard to make the American people believe it too.

Mann’s vision of public schools is at stake right now. Not only his vision of school as the great equalizer, the place where disadvantaged groups gain access to social and economic capital, which is important enough, but also his view of school as the place where Americans can give up ignorance in exchange for freedom.

This country has seemingly never had a harder time embracing a shared reality or believing in common values. The parents who are showing up at school boards yelling about “critical race theory” and pronouns are trying to get public schools to bend history, reality and values to their liking. I disagree with them vehemently, but I also want them to stay in the argument. It would be far worse if these parents went home and created their own schools. Because their children would then grow up with one set of unchallenged beliefs, while my children and the children of like-minded people would grow up with another — emerging as adults who have no hope of understanding one another, much less living together peacefully.

If we lose public education, flawed as it is, the foundations of our democracy will slip. Not only the shared knowledge base but also the skills of citizenship itself: communication, empathy and compromise across differences.

I grew up Jewish in the Bible Belt, studious and serious. My Christian classmates sometimes taunted me that I was going to hell.

I can only imagine how I would have felt if my teachers had openly agreed. If my textbooks were full of conspiracy theories about “globalists” and Jewish space lasers. If I and my friends who were Jain or Buddhist had to choose between attending a school that conformed to the majority of our neighbors’ religious beliefs and staying home.

As it was, it was hard to be singled out. But that experience of difference helped me connect with Creole children, and those whose families came from Sri Lanka, Costa Rica, Taiwan, India, Nigeria — brought to the land of football and po’ boys by the oil industry and jobs at Louisiana State University. And some of my closest friends were from white, churchgoing families too. We did the Cajun two-step, lined up for the geography bee and learned to be together, imperfectly, in this ever-various country.

Oral History Offers a Model for How Schools Can Introduce Students to Complex Topics

As historian David McCullough said, history is the study of who we are and why we are the way we are.

That’s why teachers in the Memphis-Shelby County public schools, as racially isolated now as they were when the U.S. Supreme Court outlawed school segregation, have launched a curriculum to introduce their students to the 13 children who helped integrate these Tennessee city schools in 1961.

Memphis-Shelby County teachers, researchers from the University of Memphis, and the local Memphis 13 Foundation worked with seven of the 10 surviving members of the Memphis 13—a group of Black 1st graders who peacefully enrolled in four all-white schools at the height of the civil rights era—to develop teacher training, lesson plans, and oral history activities for elementary students.

“Just going home and talking to grandparents or talking to the elders in their community was never going to be enough,” said Anna Falkner, an assistant professor at the University of Memphis and a co-developer of the curriculum, “because it wouldn’t provide [students] with the context that they needed in order to understand what happened and understand the ongoing effects of, for example, the way segregation looks today.”

The Memphis 13 project offers a model for how schools can introduce complex subjects to students, even in early grades, while also giving them opportunities to investigate social studies in their communities

“Really consider the context,” Falkner said. “What are the specifics that can help students understand their Southern context or the context wherever they are and what that means in relation to the larger experience. It’s not just focusing on that national narrative, not just sharing Brown v. Board , but really thinking about, what did this look like in my backyard? What did it look like for my family members or my community members?”

For example, teachers met with surviving members of the Memphis 13 to identify projects for students in 2nd and 5th grades, when Tennessee social studies standards cover civil rights issues. Sheila Malone, one of the students who first integrated into the district’s Bruce Elementary as a 1st grader, suggested that 5th graders record the experiences of others who had attended the district schools during desegregation.

“[Malone] wanted the students to go back home and share the story and have intergenerational conversations about the history of our schools,” said Gina Tillis, the director of curriculum and instruction for the Memphis 13 Foundation, who co-developed the Memphis curriculum. “One of the things that I’ve noticed with the members of Memphis 13 is, as they’re sharing their stories, they’re unpacking memories that have been silenced. … This is a really powerful space for students to reflect on their education, their parents’ and their elders’ education, and what we’re doing collectively to create a more inclusive and equitable school system.”

Second graders, for example, watch documentaries and review news accounts about the school desegregation decisions in Memphis and other cities, identifying ways children their age participated. In 5th grade , students review collected oral history interviews and collect their own, as well as analyze modern policies related to school integration. Tillis said the project plans to expand the curriculum to 8th and 11th grades in the future.

Building school integration history projects

Emerging technology has made it easier for educators to engage their students in active historical research, according to the Center for Public History and Digital Humanities at Cleveland State University in Ohio. The center, for example, has developed apps to help students record interviews and archive historical documents.

Efforts like those of the Memphis 13 helped integrate public schools in the decades following the landmark U.S. Supreme Court ruling in Brown v. Board of Education . However, these trends began to reverse in the 1990s and have worsened to this day, even as the overall public school population has grown more diverse. Studies find schools serving high populations of students of color continue to have on average fewer educational opportunities —including challenging courses, experienced teachers, and other resources—compared with schools serving mostly white students.

While the Memphis 13 are well known, Tillis stressed that schools can use community history to engage students regardless of where they are. “Everyone has a school desegregation story. Every district, every person ... and every district story is unique,” she said. “It’s, I think, one of the most powerful stories to share because it offers you this platform to really deconstruct what’s going on in our schools.”

Researchers recommended that schools interested in developing similar projects:

• Work with local historians and groups to identify social studies topics and events that had strong effects on the local community. This can include school district librarians or archivists, for example.
• Provide teachers with training in both the historical context and strategies and tools for documenting community history.
• Focus on topics that encourage students to make connections between history and current issues in their community.

“One of the lessons that we’re hoping to share with other school districts is just the power of listening to your community members who are historians, even if they don’t work for the local archive: the neighbor down the street who kept all the newspapers, the person who knew everybody in the neighborhood,” Falkner said. “Finding those community members and making a meaningful way for them to participate in the curriculum development is the most important piece.”

All of our teachers are devoted to their duties and have good teaching skill . The School Building

Our school building is very big and it has seven floors. Our school has classes from pre-nursery to class twelve. It also has a big playground and has a swimming pool too, which gives us a nice view of the building.

Our school runs in two shifts morning and day. Morning shifts are for classes pre-nursery to class three whereas the day shifts start from class four to class twelve. All of the classes have three sections.

Our Principal and the teacher both have two separate rooms. Also, there is another room for clerks where the records of all the students and teachers are kept.

There is a big library on the third floor where we have well-stocked useful books and we have also well-equipped laboratory rooms. We too have a common room where we play indoor games during .recreation hours. Our common room is also the venue of our debating club. The Principal as the president of the debating club. We have our debate on every Saturday after school hours in the common room of the school building. We have the debate, read out essays and have a discussion on interesting topics. Some of the students are good in games and have also won prizes in many competitive matches.

There is a monthly magazine published in our school. Also, every year we go for an excursion with some teachers as our guides.

The school annual function and the prize-giving ceremony holds every year. The Saraswati Puja, Independence day, Republic Day is also celebrated every year with great enthusiasm.

The Teacher-student Relationship

The Principal and teachers of our school take personal care of the individual students as a philosopher and guide. As a result, it’s a make bond between the two and its easy to communicate between them.

Our teacher motivates us and also guide us to have some aim in life. The person without an aim in life is like a ship without its radar.

Essay by UW–Madison’s Jones shares origins of ‘These Grand Places’ photography project

UW–Madison’s Tomiko Jones, an assistant professor in the School of Education’s Art Department, has written an essay about her long-form photography-based project, “These Grand Places,” for the digital magazine Edge Effects .

Jones’ photography and multidisciplinary installations explore social, cultural, and geopolitical transitions, considering the twin crises of too much and too little in the age of climate change. Running themes within her work include ecological concerns, questions of belonging, and activated cultural traditions.

In the essay, “Imagining National Belonging in American Landscapes,” Jones discusses the origins of “These Grand Places” in the road trips of her childhood and in her lived experience as a person of multiracial identity. “From elementary school to graduate studies, I often could not find myself in the history I was taught, the artwork I saw, or the archives I studied,” Jones writes. “The desire to repair the feeling of being outside official histories and search for a sense of belonging has ultimately defined my creative practice and shaped my scholarly research.”

“My project ‘These Grand Places’ arguably began during my graduate studies as an investigation into the construct of identifying land as ‘ours’,” Jones adds. “Photography, as an invention and tool, played a significant role in Manifest Destiny, in hegemonic narratives of how the nation was made, identified, and ‘conquered’.”

Jones notes the project, which got its start through a Seed Grant through the School of Education’s Grand Challenges grant program, was also informed by her participation in the First Nations Cultural Landscape Tour , led by Omar Poler.

During their walk, Jones writes, Poler asked the question: “What if we were to look at this place in a different way, through new eyes? How would that change how we acted?”

She adds that this question introduced a new philosophical idea to explore in her work: “How do we see differently?”

“These Grand Places” will premiere in a multimedia installation in Jan. 2025 as part of Jones’ mid-career exhibition.

About 1 in 5 U.S. teens who’ve heard of ChatGPT have used it for schoolwork

Roughly one-in-five teenagers who have heard of ChatGPT say they have used it to help them do their schoolwork, according to a new Pew Research Center survey of U.S. teens ages 13 to 17. With a majority of teens having heard of ChatGPT, that amounts to 13% of all U.S. teens who have used the generative artificial intelligence (AI) chatbot in their schoolwork.

Teens in higher grade levels are particularly likely to have used the chatbot to help them with schoolwork. About one-quarter of 11th and 12th graders who have heard of ChatGPT say they have done this. This share drops to 17% among 9th and 10th graders and 12% among 7th and 8th graders.

There is no significant difference between teen boys and girls who have used ChatGPT in this way.

The introduction of ChatGPT last year has led to much discussion about its role in schools , especially whether schools should integrate the new technology into the classroom or ban it .

Pew Research Center conducted this analysis to understand American teens’ use and understanding of ChatGPT in the school setting.

The Center conducted an online survey of 1,453 U.S. teens from Sept. 26 to Oct. 23, 2023, via Ipsos. Ipsos recruited the teens via their parents, who were part of its KnowledgePanel . The KnowledgePanel is a probability-based web panel recruited primarily through national, random sampling of residential addresses. The survey was weighted to be representative of U.S. teens ages 13 to 17 who live with their parents by age, gender, race and ethnicity, household income, and other categories.

This research was reviewed and approved by an external institutional review board (IRB), Advarra, an independent committee of experts specializing in helping to protect the rights of research participants.

Here are the  questions used for this analysis , along with responses, and its  methodology .

Teens’ awareness of ChatGPT

Overall, two-thirds of U.S. teens say they have heard of ChatGPT, including 23% who have heard a lot about it. But awareness varies by race and ethnicity, as well as by household income:

• 72% of White teens say they’ve heard at least a little about ChatGPT, compared with 63% of Hispanic teens and 56% of Black teens.
• 75% of teens living in households that make $75,000 or more annually have heard of ChatGPT. Much smaller shares in households with incomes between $30,000 and $74,999 (58%) and less than $30,000 (41%) say the same.

Teens who are more aware of ChatGPT are more likely to use it for schoolwork. Roughly a third of teens who have heard a lot about ChatGPT (36%) have used it for schoolwork, far higher than the 10% among those who have heard a little about it.

When do teens think it’s OK for students to use ChatGPT?

For teens, whether it is – or is not – acceptable for students to use ChatGPT depends on what it is being used for.

There is a fair amount of support for using the chatbot to explore a topic. Roughly seven-in-ten teens who have heard of ChatGPT say it’s acceptable to use when they are researching something new, while 13% say it is not acceptable.

However, there is much less support for using ChatGPT to do the work itself. Just one-in-five teens who have heard of ChatGPT say it’s acceptable to use it to write essays, while 57% say it is not acceptable. And 39% say it’s acceptable to use ChatGPT to solve math problems, while a similar share of teens (36%) say it’s not acceptable.

Some teens are uncertain about whether it’s acceptable to use ChatGPT for these tasks. Between 18% and 24% say they aren’t sure whether these are acceptable use cases for ChatGPT.

Those who have heard a lot about ChatGPT are more likely than those who have only heard a little about it to say it’s acceptable to use the chatbot to research topics, solve math problems and write essays. For instance, 54% of teens who have heard a lot about ChatGPT say it’s acceptable to use it to solve math problems, compared with 32% among those who have heard a little about it.

What Do We Mean by Classical?

In the 1940’s the British author, Dorothy Sayers, wrote an essay titled The Lost Tools of Learning . In it she not only calls for a return to the application of the seven liberal arts of ancient education, the first three being the “Trivium” – grammar, logic, rhetoric, she also combines three stages of children’s development to the Trivium. Specifically, she matches what she calls the “Poll-parrot” stage with grammar, “Pert” with logic, and “Poetic” with rhetoric (see The Lost Tools Chart ). At Logos, the founding board members were intrigued with this idea of applying a classical education in a Christian context. Students protesting on campuses across US ask colleges to cut investments supporting Israel

Students at a growing number of U.S. colleges are gathering in pro-Palestinian encampments with a unified demand to end investments supporting Israel’s war in Gaza.

Students at a growing number of U.S. colleges are gathering in protest encampments with a unified demand of their schools: Stop doing business with Israel — or any companies that support its ongoing war in Gaza .

The demand has its roots in the Boycott, Divestment and Sanctions movement, a decades-old campaign against Israel’s policies toward the Palestinians. The movement has taken on new strength as the Israel-Hamas war surpasses the six-month mark and stories of suffering in Gaza have sparked international calls for a cease-fire.

Inspired by ongoing protests and the arrests last week of more than 100 students at Columbia University, students from Massachusetts to California are now gathering by the hundreds on campuses, setting up tent camps and pledging to stay put until their demands are met.

“We want to be visible,” said Columbia protest leader Mahmoud Khalil, who noted that students at the university have been pushing for divestment from Israel since 2002. “The university should do something about what we’re asking for, about the genocide that’s happening in Gaza. They should stop investing in this genocide.”

Campus protests began after Hamas’ deadly Oct. 7 attack on southern Israel, when militants killed about 1,200 people, most of them civilians, and took roughly 250 hostages. During the ensuing war, Israel has killed more than 34,000 Palestinians in the Gaza Strip, according to the local health ministry, which doesn’t distinguish between combatants and noncombatants but says at least two-thirds of the dead are children and women.

WHAT DO THE STUDENTS WANT TO SEE HAPPEN?

The students are calling for universities to separate themselves from any companies that are advancing Israel’s military efforts in Gaza — and in some cases from Israel itself.

Protests on many campuses have been orchestrated by coalitions of student groups , often including local chapters of organizations such as Students for Justice in Palestine and Jewish Voice for Peace. They’re banding together as umbrella groups, such as MIT’s Coalition Against Apartheid and the University of Michigan’s Tahrir Coalition.

The groups largely act independently, though there has been some coordination. After students at Columbia formed their encampment last week, they held a phone call with about 200 other people interested in starting their own camps. But mostly it has happened spontaneously, with little collaboration between campuses, organizers said.

The demands vary from campus to campus. Among them:

— Stop doing business with military weapons manufacturers that are supplying arms to Israel.

— Stop accepting research money from Israel for projects that aid the country’s military efforts.

— Stop investing college endowments with money managers who profit from Israeli companies or contractors.

— Be more transparent about what money is received from Israel and what it’s used for.

Student governments at some colleges in recent weeks have passed resolutions calling for an end to investments and academic partnerships with Israel. Such bills were passed by student bodies at Columbia, Harvard Law, Rutgers and American University.

HOW ARE COLLEGES AND UNIVERSITIES RESPONDING?

Officials at several universities say they want to have a conversation with students and honor their right to protest. But they also are echoing the concerns of many Jewish students that some of the demonstrators’ words and actions amount to antisemitism — and they say such behavior won’t be tolerated.

Sylvia Burwell, president of American University, rejected a resolution from the undergraduate senate to end investments and partnerships with Israel.

“Such actions threaten academic freedom, the respectful free expression of ideas and views, and the values of inclusion and belonging that are central to our community,” Burwell said in a statement.

Burwell cited the university’s “longstanding position” against the decades-old BDS movement.

Protesters in the movement have drawn parallels between Israel’s policy in Gaza — a tiny strip of land tucked between Israel, Egypt and the Mediterranean Sea that is home to about 2.3 million Palestinians — to apartheid in South Africa. Israel imposed an indefinite blockade of Gaza after Hamas seized control of the strip in 2007.

Opponents of BDS say its message veers into antisemitism. In the past decade alone, more than 30 states have enacted laws or directives blocking agencies from hiring companies that support the movement. Former Education Secretary Betsy DeVos called it a “pernicious threat” in 2019, saying it fueled bias against Jews on U.S. campuses.

Asked this week whether he condemned “the antisemitic protests,” President Joe Biden said he did. “I also condemn those who don’t understand what’s going on with the Palestinians,” Biden said after an Earth Day event Monday.

At Yale, where dozens of student protesters were arrested Monday, President Peter Salovey noted in a message to campus that, after hearing from students, the university’s Advisory Committee on Investor Responsibility had recommended against divesting from military weapons manufacturers.

President Minouche Shafik at Columbia said there should be “serious conversations” about how the university can help in the Middle East. But “we cannot have one group dictate terms,” she said in a statement Monday.

MIT said in a statement that the protesters have “the full attention of leadership, who have been meeting and talking with students, faculty, and staff on an ongoing basis.”

HOW MUCH MONEY ARE THE SCHOOLS RECEIVING?

On many campuses, students pushing for divestment say they don’t know the extent of their colleges’ connections to Israel. Universities with large endowments spread their money across a vast array of investments, and it can be difficult or impossible to identify where it all lands.

The U.S. Education Department requires colleges to report gifts and contracts from foreign sources, but there have been problems with underreporting , and colleges sometimes dodge reporting requirements by steering money through separate foundations that work on their behalf.

According to an Education Department database, about 100 U.S. colleges have reported gifts or contracts from Israel totaling $375 million over the past two decades. The data tells little about where the money comes from, however, or how it was used.

Some students at MIT have published the names of several researchers who accept money from Israel’s defense ministry for projects that the students say could help with drone navigation and missile protection. All told, pro-Palestinian students say, MIT has accepted more than $11 million from the defense ministry over the past decade.

MIT officials didn’t respond to an emailed request for comment.

“MIT is directly complicit with all of this,” said sophomore Quinn Perian, a leader of a Jewish student group that is calling for a cease-fire in the Israel-Hamas war. He said there’s growing momentum to hold colleges accountable for any role they play in supporting Israel’s military.

“We’re all drawing from the same fire,” he said. “They’re forcing us, as students, to be complicit in this genocide.”

Motivated by the Columbia protests, students at the University of Michigan were camping out on a campus plaza Tuesday demanding an end to financial investments with Israel. They say the school sends more than $6 billion to investment managers who profit from Israeli companies or contractors. They also cited investments in companies that produce drones or warplanes used in Israel, and in surveillance products used at checkpoints into Gaza.

University of Michigan officials said that they have no direct investments with Israeli companies, and that indirect investments made through funds amount to a fraction of 1% of the university’s $18 billion endowment. The school rejected calls for divestment, citing a nearly 20-year-old policy “that shields the university’s investments from political pressures.”

WHAT’S NEXT FOR THE STUDENTS?

Students at Harvard and Yale are demanding greater transparency, along with their calls for divestment.

Transparency was one of the key demands at Emerson College, where 80 students and other supporters occupied a busy courtyard on the downtown Boston campus Tuesday.

Twelve tents sporting slogans including “Free Gaza” or “No U.S. $ For Israel” lined the entrance to the courtyard, with sleeping bags and pillows peeking out through the zippered doors.

Students sat cross-legged on the brick paving stones typing away on final papers and reading for exams. The semester ends in a couple of weeks.

“I would love to go home and have a shower,” said Owen Buxton, a film major, “but I will not leave until we reach our demands or I am dragged out by police.”
