Palawan paradise: top things to see and do

The Philippines’ ‘final frontier’ no longer, Palawan is a must for the global traveller, with its heady mix of sublime seascapes, virgin rainforests and world-class resorts. Palawan’s beaches simply have no equal, and with scores of islands to explore, the archipelago offers boundless opportunities for those looking to escape reality for a few days – or months.

Diving and snorkelling

A rich underwater tapestry greets scuba divers who flock to Palawan , which lies at the very heart of the Coral Triangle biodiversity corridor. The highlight is Tubbataha Reefs National Park , a partially sunken atoll in the middle of the Sulu Sea that’s accessible only by live-aboard boat from late March to mid-June. Here hammerheads mingle with giant wrasse and manta rays on a radiant coral shelf. Up north in the Calamian Islands , experienced divers penetrate the haunting husks of some two dozen Japanese shipwrecks sunk by American bombers in Coron Bay in 1944. The Calamians, along with El Nido , have outstanding reef diving. Live-aboard trips between these two tourist hotspots cut through the Linapacan Archipelago, characterised by crystalline waters and lonely beaches.

Island hopping

Top of most visitors' bucket lists is boarding a trusty Philippine bangka (motorized outrigger) or speed boat and setting off to explore Palawan’s 1780 islands. Paradise takes many forms here: from the James Bond-worthy seascapes of El Nido’s Bacuit Archipelago ; to the striking turquoise waters and dazzling coral reefs of the Calamian Islands in the north; to the Maldives-esque sandbars of the up-and-coming Balabac Archipelago in the extreme south of the province. Why not unplug from the world and take a multiday expedition, camping on remote islands under the stars, far removed from other tourists?

The best part about Palawan’s glorious beaches? Only a fraction are known to the masses. The rest are yours for the taking. El Nido has a seemingly endless supply of sandy dreamscapes both onshore and offshore in the Bacuit Archipelago. The latter was the muse for Alex Garland’s seminal novel, The Beach . North of El Nido, a rough road leads to amber-toned Nacpan Beach , a 3km sprawl with partial sunset views that somehow remains relatively undeveloped. Heading south along Palawan’s west coast, wind-swept affairs like Long Beach in San Vicente lay exposed to the full force of the Pacific Ocean. Way up north, the Calamian Islands are known for postcard-perfect islets often ringed 360-degrees by blindingly white sand.

Jungle adventures

Close to 50% of Palawan’s old-growth forest cover remains intact, by far the most among Philippine provinces, providing ample opportunity for landlubbers to frolic in the forest. Waterfalls – there are literally thousands – thunder out of mainland Palawan’s jagged peaks into crisp emerald-green pools. Estrella Falls in Southern Palawan has no less than 64 tiers; it takes four days to reach them all. Naturalists can prowl the rainforests in search of giant monitor lizards, monkeys, endemic Palawan bearcats or flying foxes. Birdwatchers migrate from around the globe to spot rare species like the vocal Palawan hornbill or the red-vented (Philippine) cockatoo, while determined trekkers can scale myriad peaks.

Palawan’s tourism wagon is firmly hitched to the sea, and so is its diet. In Bacuit Bay, bronzed backpackers on island-hopping trips out of El Nido alight on idyllic beaches to gorge on repasts of prawns, squid, mussels, crab and red snapper (pro tip: pick the boat operator with the best lunch). Calamian boat trips offer a similar culinary experience. In remote fishing communities across Palawan, dinner consists of whatever the locals caught that day, perhaps a dorado (mahi-mahi) or yellowfin tuna for sashimi if you’re lucky. Back in civilisation, Kalui in the provincial capital, Puerto Princesa , does delectable set seafood menus complemented by salads of seaweed and forest-picked fern.

Adrenaline rushes

How extreme can you go? Palawan is an amazing destination for adrenaline junkies. In El Nido, it maxes out with cliff-diving from the karst towers of Bacuit Bay – the Red Bull cliff diving series stopped in El Nido earlier this year. Also in the El Nido area, Sibaltan Beach is an up-and-coming kitesurfing spot while Duli Beach woos surfers; the season for both is November to March. Karst is everywhere, providing rock climbers with opportunities to get vertical – El Nido and Sabang are good choices. The latter is the site of the Subterranean River National Park , the longest navigable underground river in the world. Access is by slow paddle boats that hardly qualify as extreme, but with permission you can don spelunking gear and proceed 3km beyond the tourist zone.

Sea kayaking

Why not skip the standard bangka tours and explore Palawan’s iconic bays by sea kayak? Multi-day expeditions are a logical next step. Several companies on the main Calamian island of Busuanga already offer these. Busuanga is surrounded by little islands that provide shelter and good camping spots. Sea kayakers can spend up to a week paddling around the island, fishing for their food and basking in isolation. More extreme are two-week Busuanga-to-El Nido expeditions that pit person against sea. Paddling has the additional benefit of having limited impact on Palawan’s fragile environment.

Sustainable travel

Palawan has always had a responsible attitude towards its environment. It was one of the first provinces to crack down on litter, noise pollution and single-use plastics. There is plenty at stake, as the province’s pristine rainforests and coastal ecosystems are under grave threat from illegal logging and destructive fishing practices. Against that backdrop, several award-winning resorts are leading the way toward a more sustainable future, blending native design and low-carbon elements like solar panels, composting and edible gardens to create living spaces that will last. Ecotourism will play a role in determining the future of the archipelago. Do your homework and choose responsible tour operators and resorts. The future of Palawan depends on it.

The Puerto Princesa International Airport in Palawan’s major island is the main gateway, with daily flights from Manila, while the Francisco B. Reyes Airport in Busuanga Island and El Nido Lio Airport welcome tourists smack right into Palawan’s picturesque northern islands. On land, you can hop on motor taxis, jeepneys, buses, vans, and minivans to go to most destinations. Cars are not recommended due to intermittent stretches of rough roads.

The Puerto Princesa Subterranean River National Park ( popularly known as Puerto Princesa Underground River) , at the St. Paul Mountain Range on the main island’s western coast, some 80 km. from the city center of Puerto Princesa, is the best way to start your Palawan adventure. A great side trip to the underwater river ride is a traipse to nearby Ugong Rock . The more adventurous travelers might wish to squeeze through its holes and cracks to reach the top of this 75-foot limestone formation jutting up the sea. Off Coron town in Busuanga Island are the Coron Reefs —ancient limestone cliffs quietly cradling seven lakes. Community, Conservation and Natural Climate Solutions: Mantalingahan Landscape Conservation Project

Conservation International is proud to share an intimate portrait of the elusive and rare wildlife of the Philippines, thriving in their natural habitats. The Philippines is one of the most biodiverse countries on Earth and home to a variety of species found nowhere else on the planet. The photos included below offer a glimpse at the 120,457-hectare Mount Mantalingahan Protected Landscape — a vital habitat located on the Philippine island of Palawan that is home to more than 1,000 plant and animal species. The landscape also provides for more than 12,000 Indigenous people, many of whom rely directly on nature for their livelihoods and are among the world’s most climate-vulnerable communities.

Despite its protected status, the Mantalingahan Landscape continues to be threatened by deforestation and forest degradation, and 10 percent of its species are considered threatened, including the Palawan pangolin and the Philippine cockatoo. In 2020, Conservation International and Procter & Gamble (P&G) launched the Mantalingahan Landscape Conservation Project , a five-year project to restore and protect the landscape. We are working to ensure that this ecosystem can support local communities while contributing to the reduction of global emissions through forest and mangrove conservation. This project was the first to be developed as part of the Natural Climate Solutions Initiative in support of P&G's nature and climate targets.

The photographs highlighted below were captured by local photographer and filmmaker Jessie M. Cereno, as well as by members of the Palawan Council for Sustainable Development and Conservation International staff. The photos appeared at the 2022 UN Biodiversity Conference (COP 15) in Montreal, Canada, where nearly 200 countries discussed the implementation of new global biodiversity goals for the next decade.

From rugged coast to mountain peaks, Palawan boasts a tremendous variety of marine, freshwater and terrestrial ecosystems. The island not only harbors unique and endemic species, but also provides essential goods and services to people.

Mangroves grow along coasts and estuaries in the Mantalingahan Landscape, the largest terrestrial protected area in the Philippines. Palawan has the most mangrove cover in the Philippines, spanning approximately 60,000 hectares. These mangroves protect coastal communities by buffering against storm surges, serve as nurseries for fish and other marine species, support local food security, and absorb and store enormous amounts of climate-warming carbon.

“What really stands out about the Mantalingahan Landscape is the tremendous variety of ecosystems and species that are concentrated in this relatively small area, with habitats ranging from steaming coastal mangroves to cool montane forest around the peak of Mount Mantalingahan. While Indigenous people have long revered and depended upon this biodiversity, scientists are only beginning to understand the incredibly unique wildlife that is found here.”

The Palawan pangolin ( Manis culionensis ), known locally as balintong, is a reclusive and gentle animal found only in Palawan. They spend much of their time in the treetops and use a long, sticky tongue to feed on termites and ants. Like other pangolin species, they are illegally hunted for their scales, organs and skin, which are used in traditional medicine in some parts of the world. The species is listed as Critically Endangered by the IUCN Red List, and its continued survival depends on reducing illegal poaching and protecting forests such as those in the Mantalingahan Landscape.

The Palawan Forest Turtle  ( Siebenrockiella leytensis ) is another Critically Endangered species found only in Palawan. Though this mysterious and elusive species lives in streams, rivers and swamps, it lays its eggs on the forest floor, where it covers them with leaves. Palawan forest turtles are highly sensitive to disturbance and require intact forest to survive. For much of the twentieth century, the species was not seen in the wild, until they were officially rediscovered in 2004. Unfortunately, since then the population has declined, primarily due to the pet trade.

The Philippine cockatoo ( Cacatua haematuropygia ), also Critically Endangered, prefers lowland forests with adjacent mangroves. Threatened by habitat loss and wildlife trade, only an estimated 430-750 individuals are believed to remain in the wild. The Mantalingahan Landscape supports healthy mangroves that are essential for this large parrot, as well as many other species, making it one of the most important bird habitats in the Philippines.

The stork-billed kingfisher ( Pelargopsis capensis ) is named for its unusually large and brightly colored beak, which it uses to catch fish, frogs, rodents, young birds and crabs, such as the one pictured here. These large kingfishers thrive in forested areas along rivers and other wetlands.

The Asian emerald dove ( Chalcophaps indica ) is a brightly colored pigeon species that inhabits mangroves and tropical forests in the Mantalingahan Landscape. Like some other pigeons, they tend to be relatively unafraid of people. We are only beginning to understand Palawan’s incredible avian diversity – in 2007, Conservation International and partners discovered a species of finch ( Erythrura prasina ) that is new to science.

The Philippine long-tailed macaque ( Macaca fascicularis philippensis ) is a subspecies of the long-tailed or crab-eating macaque that is most commonly found in mangrove and swamp forests, such as in the Mantalingahan Landscape. Like most other primates, they are omnivores, eating a variety of fruits and animals, including crabs. Each group sleeps huddled together at night for warmth in a preferred tree, usually along a river. While they adapt well to the presence of humans, the species is considered Endangered by the IUCN Red List due to a variety of threats that include habitat loss, hunting and wildlife trade.

The Palawan porcupine  ( Hystrix pumila ) is another species found only in the Palawan region. While they are relatively tolerant of habitat disturbance, the species is declining, especially due to hunting and wildlife trade, and is considered Vulnerable by the IUCN Red List. In most places worldwide, it is rare for scientists to find mammals that haven’t been previously described. The Palawan region is a notable exception to this rule. Here, Conservation International and partners have discovered several species that are new to science, including a species of pouch bat ( Saccolaimus saccolaimus ) and a species of shrew which may be endemic to Mount Mantalingahan. In addition, we rediscovered the Palawan soft-furred mountain rat ( Palawanomys furvus ), a species that had not been seen by scientists since it was first recorded in 1962.

Abundant streams, wetlands and rainforests in the Mantalingahan Landscape provide habitat for a stunning diversity of amphibians and reptiles. This includes the Palawan horned frog ( Megophrys ligayae ), whose striking appearance provides excellent camouflage in the leaf litter of the primary forests where it lives. Its tadpoles mature in small forest pools adjacent to streams and are sensitive to changes in water quality. This species is considered Near Threatened by the IUCN Red List due to its restricted distribution and declining population. Ongoing research and conservation efforts are providing fresh insights into Palawan’s diverse herpetofauna – in 2007, Conservation International and partners discovered a new species of forest gecko ( Luperosaurus gulat ).

Palawan’s rich ecosystems and unique species diversity are also essential for the people that live there. The Mantalingahan Landscape hosts important ancestral domains that are home to over 12,000 Indigenous peoples called Palaw’an. The Palaw’an, along with the Tagbanua, Molbog and the Batak Indigenous communities, are known to be some of the island’s oldest inhabitants, and their traditional ways of life are closely tied to nature. This picture shows the cone of an almaciga tree ( Agathis philippinensis ). The tree’s resin provides a high-value product for the Palaw’an culture and is traded for industrial uses. Many other plant, animal and fungus species provide food, medicine, building materials and other uses to local communities. The sustainable management of Palawan’s ecosystems will help to ensure the continued preservation of its unique biodiversity as well as the countless benefits they provide to people.

The river flows directly underneath the St Paul Mountain Range, found on the mid-western coast of Palawan island. The river system was created millions of years ago as water channelled its way through the rock creating a series of vast chambers and caverns.

The cave system stretches for a total of 24km beneath the mountains. Visitors can explore a smaller portion – entering the cave from the point where the underground river reaches the sea.

The river and caves are home to a complex ecosystem that has adapted to the underground conditions over hundreds of years. Many of the species found in the caves are endemic to the river system, including certain types of giant spiders, crabs, fish and snakes, although bats and swallows are likely to be the only creatures you’ll see.

A trip to the subterranean river national park is absolutely worth the effort if you're visiting Palawan. It's an otherworldly experience as you paddle through the dark. The clicking of bats and the echoing drips of water are the only sounds you hear. You'll glide through cavernous rock cathedrals and past stalactites into the centre of the earth.

Most tours will take you 4 km (2.5 miles) along the river. Some tours with special permits organised in advance can explore all 8.2 kilometres (5 miles). That far into the cave, boats can no longer pass and visitors have to swim between the rock walls.

Conquer your fears of small, dark spaces however, and you’ll be treated to the rare sights of waterfalls gushing through the cave walls, a unique 20 million-year-old fossil of a sirenia or manatee, and a tiny rock passage that leads into a vast room, carpeted from floor to ceiling in glimmering crystals.

Even the journey to the cave itself is worth it: you’ll enjoy a scenic 20-minute boat ride across the sea, past towering limestone karsts and walk through the national park, home to monkeys swinging through the tree canopies and giant monitor lizards slinking their way through the undergrowth.

The jumping-off point for the underground river is the small village of Sabang. Sabang is located around 40km (24 miles) north of the capital of the island – also called Puerto Princesa. You can book a day tour from the capital or stay in Sabang itself. Along with a lovely beach, it has a couple of luxury resorts and affordable beach huts.

In order to protect the river ecosystem, all visitors must have a permit. While you can organise permits and boat hire yourself, joining a tour is much simpler. Due to limited capacity and high demand, it’s best to book at least a few days in advance.

Tours from Puerto Princesa usually include transport and permits and often lunch. From Sabang, tours are shorter (and cheaper) but you may have to arrange a permit separately. You can get one at the office on the wharf.

Helmets and life jackets are provided and must be worn for the duration of the tour (which lasts around 45 minutes). Remember to keep your mouth closed when you look up, as the cave is also home to thousands of bats, who often drop unwanted "gifts" (read, faeces) from above.

An audio guide is available on most tours and provides lots of scientific information about the river and the caves (as well as atmospheric music). If you find yourself looking around in bewilderment trying to spot the different formations, remember you can remove your earphones and let your imagination take over.

How to Get to El Nido 

The main jump-off point from El Nido is the capital of the Philippines, Manila. You can either take a direct flight or fly to Palawan’s capital, Puerto Princesa, then ride a bus or van.

From Manila by Direct Flights

The fastest way to go to El Nido is to fly directly to Lio Airport from Manila. Currently,  AirSwift is the only airline that services the Manila to El Nido route. AirSwift operates up to four direct flights per day from Manila. The travel time is 1 hour and 20 minutes. From the airport, the Town Proper is just 30 minutes away by land travel.

The most common travel option when going to El Nido is by riding a plane to Puerto Princesa, the capital of Palawan. The flight fares are cheaper compared to a direct flight.

The majority of travelers take this route because it’s cost-efficient, although you will need to allocate extra days for your trip just for the transfer to and from El Nido.

There are flights to Puerto Princesa from Manila (1 hour and 25 minutes), Clark in Pampanga (about 1 hour and 30 minutes), and Cebu in the Visayas (about 1 hour and 15 minutes).

You can book through  Philippine Airlines ,  Cebu Pacific , or  AirAsia . Once in Puerto Princesa airport, you will need to ride a van or bus for 5-7 hours going to El Nido.

By Van 

Vans are the most popular option among travelers for land travel to El Nido because it’s slightly faster than the bus with a travel time of 5-6 hours. The vans only leave once it’s full of passengers. The only stop is halfway for restroom and snack breaks.

It’s advisable to book these in advance so they can pick you up straight from the airport. You can also hire a private van if you’re traveling as a group for a more convenient trip.  

By Bus 

It is a good option if you're traveling with big or multiple luggage because buses have luggage compartments. Compared to vans, buses have more extensive legroom. However, travel time is longer at 6-7 hours because they make stops along the way to pick up and drop off passengers.

From the airport, ride a tricycle going to San Jose Terminal where you can board a bus going to El Nido. You have the option to ride an ordinary (non-air-conditioned) and air-conditioned bus. The bus will drop you off at a terminal station in El Nido where you can ride a tricycle going to your resort or hotel.

If you're already in Coron, Palawan, you can ride a fast craft going to El Nido. The travel time is around 4 hours. The boat leaves Coron at noon and arrives by 3:30 PM in El Nido. There are no direct flights from Busuanga Airport in Coron to El Nido.

Located 2-2.5 hours away by land from El Nido is an emerging Palawan destination called  San Vicente . You can fly to San Vicente Airport by booking flights with  SkyJet (from Manila, 50 minutes) or  Philippine Airlines (from Clark in Pampanga, 1 hour and 30 minutes).

From there, you can hire a van that will take you to El Nido. Make sure to book your van transfer in advance so they can pick you up at San Vicente Airport. 

Getting Around El Nido 

El Nido is a small town that travelers can easily explore by riding small vehicles like motorcycles or tricycles, and vans for bigger groups. Here are your options for transportation. Make sure to choose based on your group size, budget, and comfort preference.

Motorcycle 

The majority of visitors traveling solo hire motorcycle taxis (called habal-habal ) driven by a local. They are best for land tours within El Nido. You can hire this per drop-off or for the whole day. Rates will vary on the destination. You can find these usually parked at the Town Proper or ask your hotel to call one for you. 

Self-drive Motorcycle 

If you know how to drive a motorcycle, you can rent a unit at the shops located in the Town Proper. It is a good option if you're traveling alone or by pairs, and want to explore El Nido at your own pace.

Tricycle 

Private Van 

For bigger groups or if you want the most comfortable transport option, you can hire a private van. These can take you around El Nido for a land tour, and you can also hire for your whole trip or travel to neighboring destinations in Palawan such as Puerto Princesa or San Vicente.

It's better to book this in advance since they are on call and don't have their terminal.

If you’re not afraid of heights, a must-do in El Nido is to hike Taraw Cliff. You will climb its steep limestone rocks that oversee the entire town of El Nido. But one thing not to miss when in El Nido, Palawan is the bird's nest soup. It is a delicacy made from the bird's nest of the Balinsasayaw bird that it forms with its saliva. El Nido is named after this, as El Nido translates to "The Nest."

The nests are found in the crevices of the limestone cliffs found around El Nido. This simple soup is pricey, though because of its limited supply and the difficulty of harvesting it.

Practical Information and Tips 

Before you jet off to El Nido, take note of these helpful travel tips for a hassle-free adventure. Find out what the mode of payment is if credit cards are accepted, and what languages are spoken by the locals. 

Currency 

Make sure to bring enough cash in Philippine Peso (PHP). There's one ATM in the Town Proper, but there's no assurance that it will be online all the time during your trip. It's best to withdraw or exchange enough money while you're in bigger cities like Manila.

Some establishments like luxury hotels and high-end restaurants, accept credit cards, but again, it's better to bring enough cash. 

Language 

The locals of El Nido speak Filipino, Cuyonon, and other varieties of Visayan languages. The majority of locals, especially in tourist areas, can speak and understand basic English. 

El Nido is best enjoyed when you're not in a rush. Unless you're flying directly to El Nido, a day trip isn't possible. Most first-time visitors allot at least four days for El Nido considering the travel time from Puerto Princesa and back.

A brief introduction to the island's diverse ethnic group.

Take a closer look at the diverse indigenous groups of Palawan, a beautiful island province in the Philippines. From the Tagbanua to the Batak, we highlight the unique customs, traditions, and way of life of each tribe, offering a fascinating glimpse into the rich cultural heritage of Palawan's indigenous peoples.

DESTINATIONS

Palawan, the largest province in the Philippines, is home to several indigenous ethnolinguistic groups, including the Tagbanua, Palaw’an, Tao’t Bato, Molbog, Batak, Agutaynen, and Cuyonon. These groups live in remote villages throughout the province found in mountains and coastal areas. Palawan’s history shows that these indigents have occupied the area long before Malay settlers arrived in the 12th century.

Antonio Pigafetta, the chronicler of Ferdinand Magellan, wrote about the native people of Palawan after Magellan’s death. The natives used weapons like blowpipes, spears, and bronze Lombard. Pigafetta also noted that the natives had their system of writing and a dialect of 18 syllables. The Tabon Man that Dr. Fox discovered may have been the natives that Pigafetta described.

Research indicates that the Tagbanuas and Palaw’ans are descendants of the Tabon Cave’s inhabitants. These tribes share similarities in their language, farming methods, and belief in soul relatives. Although several indigenous groups have moved to Palawan, only seven have been recognized as the true natives of the province by the National Commission on Indigenous Peoples.

The Batak tribe is an indigenous group of people who reside in the rugged interiors of the northeast portion of Palawan, Philippines. With only about 500 or fewer members remaining, they are considered a small and endangered group. They are known for their close connection to nature and their belief in nature spirits, which they communicate with through the aid of a “babaylan” or shaman.

Anthropologists believe that the Bataks are closely related to the Aytas of Central Luzon, another Negrito tribe, with similarities in their physical characteristics, such as small stature, dark complexion, and curly, kinky hair.

For centuries, the Bataks have combined a hunting-gathering lifestyle with seeding of useful food plants, kaingin farming, and trading. They have even had trading relations with Chinese merchants as early as 500 AD.

However, during the mid to late 20th century, Bataks were forced out of their gathering grounds by emigrant farmers and were pushed into less fertile areas in the mountains. They tried to supplement their income by harvesting and selling non-timber forest products, which conservationists found to be more sustainable than commercial concessionaires.

Bataks are animists and make regular offerings to nature spirits. Shamans undergo spiritual possessions to communicate with the spirits and to heal the sick.

Nowadays, intermarriage with people outside the tribe has resulted in the assimilation of Bataks into a more diffuse group of upland indigenous peoples, causing the loss of their tribal identities, unique spirituality, and culture. There are even debates about whether they still exist as a distinct ethnic entity or not.

Agutaynon is an indigenous group that is most likely to be found in the northern part of the province of Palawan, such as Agutaya Island, the Municipality of Roxas, the Municipality of San Vicente, the Municipality of Brooke’s Point, the Municipality of Taytay, and Linapacan. They may also be occasionally spotted in Manila, the capital city of the Philippines.

These groups of people are believed to belong to the family of  Austronesians and Malayo-Polynesians , who have long inhabited the province of Palawan. They have lexical similarity with Cuyonon and the Calamian Tagbanua, who are also indigenous groups in Palawan.

Agutaynon, however, is  not well-known to the public  due to the limited number of individuals and the lack of records about this group because of the remoteness of their area from the mainland of the province of Palawan. According to recent reports, this group of people has also begun to embrace modernization.

The Tagbanuas are believed to be descendants of the Tabon Man due to the many similarities they share in language, alphabet, and cultural practices such as kaingin (shifting cultivation) and belief in soul relatives.

This tribe is mainly located in the Central and Northern portions of Palawan, where they practice upland rice cultivation and the traditional rice wine ritual known as “Pagdiwata”. They also have a religious system centered around the cult of the dead and the worship of numerous deities found in nature.

The Tagbanua is one of the oldest ethnic groups in the Philippines , and can be found in several municipalities, including Aborlan, Quezon, Calamian Islands, Baras Coast, Busuanga Island, Coron Island, some parts of El Nido, and Puerto Princesa City.

Tagbanuas are characterized by their brown skin, slim, and straight hair. They are divided into two groups: Central Tagbanua and Calamian Tagbanua, who speak different languages and have distinct customs.

Tagbanuas live in compact villages ranging from 45 to 500 individuals. While there were around 130,000 Tagbanuas in Palawan in 1987, the current population has decreased to approximately 10,000, with 1,800 residing in Calamianes.

The Tagbanuas have their own unique government system, which is practiced by both Central and Calamian Tagbanua communities.

The Molbog people are an indigenous group dominating the municipalities of Balabac and Bataraza in southern Palawan. They are the only indigenous Muslim community in Palawan, and their area has been their homeland since the classical era prior to Spanish colonization. The Molbogs have a strong connection with the natural world, particularly the sacred pilandok (Philippine mouse-deer), which can only be found in the Balabac islands. In Molbog culture, the coconut is their most prized agricultural crop.

The Molbogs rely on farming, fishing , and occasional barter trading with neighboring communities for their livelihood. They are related to the Orang Tidung or Tirum, an Islamized indigenous group living in the northeast coast of Sabah. However, Molbogs also incorporate words and customs from other ethnic groups such as the Jama Mapun and Tausug.

The frequent intermarriages between Molbogs and Tausugs have hastened the Islamization of the Molbogs, and their offsprings are known as “kolibugan” or half-breeds. Islam is a way of life for the Molbogs, who observe the Five Pillars of Islam and conduct daily Arabic chanting. The Molbogs played a significant role in the formation of the Sulu Sultanate, which was established by the unification of Molbogs and Palawanon Muslims ruled by Sulu Datus.

While outsiders are welcomed as medical and literacy volunteers, those who attempt to introduce other religions to the community are not accepted.

The Palaw’an, also known as Palawano, is an indigenous ethnic group found in the province of Palawan in the southern Philippines. This group is divided into four ethnolinguistic subgroups: Quezon Palawan (Central Palawano), Bugsuk Palawano (South Palawano), Brooke’s Point Palawano, and Southwest Palawano.

The Palaw’ans belong to the large Manobo-based linguistic groups of the southern Philippines and were originally found in the interior regions of South Apuruan and South Abo-Abo in the southern part of the province of Palawan.

The Palaw’ans used to be nomadic, but agrarian settlers began occupying their vast domain, leading them to exploit the most fertile piece of land and move on to the next one. Their family units were very small, probably due to high mortality rates. It is believed that the Palaw’ans have the shortest lifespan, but there is no statistical data to back up this claim.

Their houses are built on a hillside near a river or stream, and the floor is about 15 to 20 feet above the ground. The Palaw’ans hunt wild animals using spears with lethal poison at the tip and catch fish by using a special root sap. They prefer dogs for hunting rather than domesticating chickens or hogs.

Due to their fear of falling ill , the Palaw’ans are cautious in socializing with outsiders and may be seen as naive. They take great precautions and may even leave their area if they feel there is a risk of contracting any illness, even a common cold.

They have no concept of years and when asked about their age, they often refer to a tree’s height as a point of reference since they do not have a concept of years. They would say that they were born when the tree was at a specific height.

In terms of food preference, the Palaw’ans do not usually use salt and consume rice, banana, cassava, vegetables, rimas, fruits, wild pigs, birds, and freshwater fish. They prepare a delicious delicacy called pinyaram, similar to the bibingka of the Tagalogs.

The men wear g-strings while the women wear patadyong, a native wrap similar to the malong. 

Taaw't Bato

The Taaw’t Bato community, also known as the “people of the rock,” is a small traditional southwestern Palawano tribe . They reside in the Singnapan Basin, a valley situated between Mount Matalingahan and the coast of Palawan. During certain seasons of the year, they live in the crater of an extinct volcano, building their houses on raised floors inside caves or on open slopes. Despite the lack of modern amenities, the Taaw’t Bato have a unique lifestyle and culture that has remained relatively unchanged for generations.

The Taaw’t Bato’s traditional dress is simple, with men wearing g-strings made of bark and cloth, and women wearing cloth skirts to cover the lower body. Although they are often half-naked, women sometimes wear blouses obtained through market systems. The tribe’s artistic abilities are cruder compared to other Palawan groups, except for exceptional cases involving basketry.

The Taaw’t Bato are swidden cultivators who practice multiple cropping, with cassava as the primary source of carbohydrates. They also grow sweet potato, sugarcane, malungay, garlic, pepper, string beans, squash, tomato, pineapple, and more. Hunting and foraging are pursued throughout the year to supplement their carbohydrate-based diet. They use spring traps to catch most of the wild pigs.

The Taaw’t Bato engage in both sambi (barter) and dagang (monetary exchange). The trade primarily involves marine fish provided by the people of Candawaga in exchange for horticultural products of the Taaw’t Bato. Dagang involves forest products such as almaciga and rattan.

The Tao’t Bato’s basic social unit is the ka-asawan or marriage group , which extends to compound and extended family groupings. The ka-asawan is further grouped into large associations called “bulun-bulun,” which means gathering. These multi-household bands are physically bounded in terms of areas of habitation and characterized by sharing through various types of social and material exchanges, such as food.

Due to their uniqueness, the Philippine government has declared the Taaw’t Bato’s area off-limits to outsiders to protect them from exploitation. However, the community is currently facing a threat from mining concessions granted in the Mt. Gangtong and Mantalingahan range. This is despite measures taken to prevent events like this from happening, as prior claims for mining are still valid. Despite the challenges they face, the Taaw’t Bato continue to preserve their way of life and culture, living in harmony with nature.

The Cuyunons is an ethnic group originally from the island town of Cuyo in northern Palawan. They are considered an “elite class” among the natives in Palawan. They are known for their religious devotion , discipline, and a strong sense of community. 

With various names such as Cuyonon, Cuyono, Cuyunon, Kuyunon, Kuyunen, and more, this ethnic tribe is the most dominant in Palawan, comprising about 240,000 people as recorded in 2015. Although scattered around the world, 85% of them permanently reside in the province of Palawan. The Cuyunons originated genetically and linguistically from Panay Island in central Philippines as early as 1250 AD, but they also have Malayan roots from Banjarmasin in Borneo Island, a thousand years ago.

Today, the Cuyono usually practices Roman Catholicism, Christian Protestantism, and Animism with strong Spanish adaptations. Unlike most of the Philippines’ homogeneous tribal groups, the Cuyunon tribe is heterogeneous, with ancestors traced back to ancient migrants and traders who settled in Palawan, such as the Chinese, Arabs, Jews, Indians, Malays, Vishayans, Spanish, and other Europeans.

Although the Cuyunons’ language is closely related to Kinaray-a of Miag-ao in Iloilo province, the early Cuyunon tribe became the common denominator of all the homogeneous tribes of Palawan as early as the 1250s because they intermarried with the Bataks, Tagbanuas, Agutaynens, Molbogs, and other tribes living in Palawan.

Cuyunons are divided into four subgroups that distinguish one Cuyunon from another:

1.Paraguanen: Cuyuno people who settled mostly in mainland Palawan (Paragua) 2.Poroanen: Cuyuno people who settled mostly in the islands and islets of Palawan 3.Mestiso: Cuyuno who are usually half Chinese or Spanish 4.Lakto: Cuyuno who did not accept Catholicism and lived as Animists

Cuyunons, unlike other tribes in Palawan, may be seen anywhere in the province, including the city of Puerto Princesa. They have embraced modernization and incorporated it into their daily lives, making it challenging to identify them in public unless asked about their ethnicity.
