Although Beowulf is idolized throughout the whole story as a hero figure, he shows his conceited nature by taking full credit and not giving the same credit to those who helped him. Beowulf is a character that possesses all the qualities of an Anglo-Saxon period hero. He is brave, fearless, courageous and strong but are these qualities enough to consider him a hero by the standards of what we call a hero today ? A hero does not only need to be physically outstanding but he also needs to have moral values and needs to act without thinking in his own benefit.

Page fifty-five the story states “no one else could do what I mean to here, no man but me could hope to defeat this monster” Beowulf is lifting himself above everyone else in order to bring a glory to his name. Also, Beowulf watched one of his own men die in order to collect and develop a deeper understanding of Grendel, to eventually fight him and collect the glory of the win all to himself.

On page fifty-four book says “but I will fight again, seek fame if the dragon hiding in the tower dares to face me”, although Beowulf is a great soldier he puts him own reputation at the the forefront of his mind when fighting the dragon; and makes it seem as if he is such a high and mighty figure when he isn’t, he is just a normal human being.

Page forty-three states “my father was a famous soldier, known far and wide as a leader of men. His name was edgetho. His life lasted many winters; wise men all over the earth surely remember him still.” Beowulf is trying to make himself seem like he is higher then everyone just because his father was someone very important.

In Beowulf’s interaction with Hrothgar Beowulf attempts to present almost a resume like speech to Hrothgar the king of herot , he comes off as somewhat cocky in his presentation, some examples are page forty-five “they have seen my strength for themselves, have watched me rise from the darkness of war dripping with my enemies blood.” And also on page forty-five “… that alone, with the help of my men may purge the evil of his hall.” As presented in my examples Beowulf comes off as cocky to king Hrothgar in order to land the job as the slayer of Grendel but the motive does not justify the way he presents himself. Beowulf did not have to kill all those poor monster, they were angry because the people were messing with him, if they had just been more considerate of the monsters nearby the would have never attacked them or their kingdoms but they did and Beowulf saw fame in killing Grendel and all the other monsters which does not make him a hero it makes him a murderer. He did not kill them all for the sake of the people he did it for all the fame that came with it

Beowulf is revered as a hero in the interaction between the self and society and reigns for a long time because he upholds the warrior code of ethics. People in the Anglo-Saxon society in which the story is set lived in continual danger since conflicts were so prevalent. The populace could admire only men of exceptional bravery and heroism in these difficult circumstances. Characters in the poem take great pride in ancestors who have displayed courage and tried to uphold their values. The narrative is mainly a record of Beowulf’s courageous actions, in which he stands out from society by completely embodying its principles. These standards that this Anglo-Saxon civilization imposes on people focus entirely on having a good name, making good decisions as a warrior, and making good decisions as a king. While Beowulf is “all nice,” the monsters in Beowulf are “all wicked.” He battles the darkness as the light and strives arduously to make the world more just.

The Heroic Warrior

The first conflict is between Beowulf and Grendel, the demonic creature from the depths known as “Hell’s captive,” who have already arrived to kill everyone celebrating in King Hrothgar of the Danes’ (of Scandinavian descent) hall, Heorot. Beowulf waits for the monster and removes his arm from him when it appears at night. Grendel perishes as a result, and Beowulf later encounters his mother, who is seeking retribution. He bravely pursues the mother monster to her den, where he beheads her to death (Graham & Ordas, 2016). The idea that being honorable and modest is worth the risk indicates good triumphs, and Beowulf is rewarded for his goodness. When Beowulf reaches the end of his life and becomes a king, he is once again engaged in combat with a monster that seeks out treasure. Beowulf has to battle a “slick-skinned dragon, threatening the night sky with streamers of fire” (Synnott, 2016). Even though he prevailed and slew the dragon, he nonetheless passed away from his wounds.

Following the heroic canon and the universally accepted notion of what is good, Beowulf is a good character. Instead of going up against people, he battles for others by eliminating harmful monsters (Toker, 2021). He continues to be a selfless hero until the end, showing that he would sacrifice anything for his people by taking on the dragon himself. Beowulf may have flaws, such as the tendency to argue with people or the need to exaggerate his achievements (Synnott, 2016). Nevertheless, he is always fighting for good and aims to eradicate all evil from the world. He is always on the side of good.

Beowulf is not the only admirable figure in the poem. We also have his friend Wiglaf. Wiglaf is a man of the highest integrity and is prepared to battle alongside his monarch till the end of time. Beowulf started to fight the dragon alone, but Wiglaf ultimately joined him and saw Beowulf die (Graham & Ordas, 2016). The only characters in the poem who care about other people’s well-being or something bigger than themselves are these two. The latter demonstrates selflessness, which is a virtue and a component of the heroic ethic.

The Conflicts With Bloodthirsty Monsters

Like any good epic hero, Beowulf frequently engaged in combat with terrifying beasts, which contributed to his transformation into a hero who upheld the heroic code and emphasized honor, bravery, courage, and strength. He represents all these qualities, yet his adversaries are all pure evil. The monsters are actual demons that represent evil and vengeance as they seek to rule over the Danes. The author refers to the monsters as “Cain’s clan, whom the creator had outlawed and condemned as outcasts” (Međimurec, 2019). The main antagonist of Beowulf, Grendel, is pure evil; he only wants to kill for the pleasure of killing. The Danes are terrified of Grendel and his might and believe they are his unfortunate victims. However, Beowulf, a powerful, fearless warrior, raced to aid the Danes with all his bravery. He was ready to make the ultimate sacrifice in his quest for glory to defeat the monster and restore justice to the land. In opposition to her plan, Beowulf overcomes Grendel’s mother as she pursues vengeance against her son. He then battles Grendel. The conflict between good and evil can be witnessed multiple times in Beowulf, including when he kills another at the end of his days.

In conclusion, Beowulf is the embodiment of goodness because he is dedicated to dignity, and honor, standing up for what is right and eradicating evil from the world like the monster Grendel. Following the precedent set by those who came before him, the poem is dedicated to the heroic code. Beowulf ends the struggle between the individual and society by adhering to social norms and perfecting the heroic code. Except for the one he could never win death—he engaged in every war he could and triumphed in every one of them. Of course, Beowulf is not ideal, though he frequently brags and engages in verbal combat with others. Nevertheless, he consistently succeeds, demonstrating that virtue is always intended to triumph against evil.

Beowulf is a man that was raised as a hero and warrior by his people to protect them from the evil surrounding their land. Beowulf shows throughout the story many instances of heroism and great courage against Grendel, Grendel’s mother and the dragon. Beowulf is noble and strong and he doesn’t let anything stand in his way to save his people from the evils plotting against them. Beowulf was a great example of good fighting off an array of evildoers in Beowulf. Beowulf is Beowulf’s real name, given to him when he was born.

His last name is the surname of the lands he ruled, making him Beowulf King Of The Geats (Random House). Beowulf’s father died early and his mother raised him with stories about great heroes. This built up his mind that he should become one of these heroes, which led to him becoming the greatest hero in all of Geatland (Beo 2. 3-2. 5).

Beowulf has many heroic like courage, strength and heroism qualities like, Beowulf is brave enough to go out and fight Grendel (Beo 1. 1-1. ), Beowulf is strong; Beowulf was able to decapitate Grendel with his bare hands( Beo 1. 15-1. 18), Beowulf has more courage than most men; Beowulf had no fear of dying in the hands of the dragon (Beo 27-29), Beowulf’s heroism; Beowulf successfully kills Grendel’s mother by ripping off her arm( Beo 1547-1550) .

Grendel is a demonic figure that terrorizes Hrothgar’s kingdom by raiding their hall at night and devouring men as they sleep. Beowulf is called to defeat Grendel and save Hrothgar’s kingdom from the demon ( Beo 1. -1. 4). Beowulf fights valiantly against Grendel with his bare hands and then decapitates him with a giant sword that he took from Grendel’s mother ( Beo 1. 15-1. 18). Beowulf and Grendel were both strong, Beowulf for his courage and strength, Grendel for his demonic might; Beowulf has more courage than most men; Beowulf had no fear of dying in the hands of the dragon (Beo 27-29), Beo thought he would die fighting off such a monstrous beast like Grendel’s mother.

Beowulf was Beowulfs greatest adversary, Beowulf stood up to him bravely and courageously. Beowulf fought Grendel in the form of a man without any fear or hesitation because he knew it was his duty as a hero to slay evil no matter what the cost might be( Beo 1283), Beo went out there not knowing if he would fight Grendel or die but Beo knew that if he didn’t try then the kingdom would never have any peace from this demonic monster (Beo 1646-1648).

Grendel’s mother is an even more terrifying version of her son Grendel. She is truly monstrous; she has claws sharp enough to tear Beowulf’s shield to shreds ( Beo 1285-1287), Beowulf is Beowulf’s real name, given to him when he was born. His last name is the surname of the lands he ruled, making him Beowulf King Of The Geats( Random House).

Beowulf has been studied over and over again by various scholars of literature. Beowulf is typically viewed as a hero of epic proportions, who fights evil and saves the world. Beowulf’s heroic attributes are more than obvious; he kills Grendel and Grendel’s mother, then later on he also kills a dragon that had been terrorizing the land. Beowulf is not your typical hero though; in fact Beowulf would fall under the category of an anti-hero within his work.

Beowulf struggles with his own personal demons, which causes him to stray from his heroic actions at times throughout Beowulf. This allows readers to see Beowulf for what he truly is, rather than blindly viewing him as a hero. Beowulf’s inner demons also make Beowulf vulnerable, and when Beowulf is faced with his own mortality during the fight with the dragon, Beowulf struggles with the idea of what he should do in order to preserve his heroic status. Beowulf’s sacrifice and subsequent revival, in the end, enhance Beowulf’s heroism in general, but Beowulf is still more of an anti-hero than anything else.

Beowulf begins as a young man who has not yet had much experience in life; Beowulf is essentially described as an innocent boy by Grendel’s mother (line 1557). This description makes readers view Beowulf as not only naive but also uneducated about the world. Beowulf is unaware of Grendel’s mother’s intentions, and Beowulf even states that his own “mind was clouded” (line 1556) when he goes to meet with Grendel’s mother in order to reject her advances. Beowulf’s lack of experience allows the author to give Beowulf certain characteristics that are not often associated with heroes within the literature; Beowulf has a fear of mortality, which presents itself during Beowulf’s fight with the dragon.

Beowulf’s last act of goodness is in his final battle with the dragon. Beowulf, although he knew it would have been wiser to escape, chose to stay and fight. Beowulf died when he was holding the dragon’s treasure hoard so that no one could steal it. Beowulf’s good acts are also displayed in his words when defeating Grendel in battle, giving high praises to God for strength in battle. Beowulf often tried to avoid battles but always ended up doing what was right or best for others instead of himself. Beowulf lived a life of good deeds which made him a hero admired by many people even centuries after his death.

The villainous characters throughout Beowulf epitomize evil in the epic. Grendel and his mother are perfect examples of evil. Beowulf’s battle with Grendel was a fight between good and evil, Beowulf being good and Grendel being evil. Beowulf slew both Grendel and Grendel’s mother but not before they were able to kill many a brave warrior in Hrothgar’s kingdom. Beowulf’s second confrontation with an evil force came from the dragon which Beowulf knew would be difficult to overcome even with his strength because dragons possess all the cunning or wisdom of any living creature. In Beowulf, The Dragon is portrayed as a greedy, nasty, monster who wants nothing more than to collect treasure for himself.

Beowulf’s third battle with evil was his final battle. Beowulf had defeated two creatures that were an embodiment of evil but now Beowulf has to fight the symbol of all that is evil, The Dragon. Beowulf died in this epic battle against extreme evil because Beowulf knew he could not let the dragon’s treasure go unguarded for fear someone would take it and become powerful like the dragon. Beowulf also dies in this last battle because his only priority is protecting others even if it means certain death for himself. Beowulf’s final act of goodness shows just how selfless Beowulf truly was as a hero and man.
