Mission
Consistent with the mission of the USF Health Morsani College of Medicine (MCOM), the mission of the Graduate Medical Education Office is to provide for the education of Residents and Fellows through the creation of a scholarly environment that fosters excellence in the lifelong goals of education, research activity, and compassionate patient care.
Aims
- Partner with programs to recruit a diverse pool of highly qualified applicants to serve our diverse patient community and ensure that our program leadership has the knowledge to proactively plan recruitment strategies and engage applicants to meet this goal.
- Partner with programs to foster an inclusive learning environment that works towards minimizing health disparities.
- Partner with programs to nurture the development of resilient and professionally successful resident physicians who apply health systems science to team-based practice and are supported to accomplish research and scholarly activity.
- Partner with affiliate sites and programs to enhance faculty’s knowledge, skills, and attitudes to teach and train resident physicians who will be ready for their future practice of medicine and support faculty research and scholarly activity.
- Meet/exceed accreditation requirements and collaborate with affiliates towards achievement of their missions.

Neurologic surgery resident shares his challenges pursing medicine as a dreamer
Seung Lee, M.D., was in high school when he learned that he was an undocumented citizen. When it seemed like he wouldn't be able to realize his dream of becoming a neurosurgeon because of his undocumented status, the government's Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) Program opened a door for him. Today, Dr. Lee is a resident in Neurologic Surgery at Mayo Clinic in Florida, and a recipient of the American Epilepsy Society's 2021 Young Investigator Award.

The term "fourth-year medical student" feels like a misnomer for Nicolas Rubel, who finished his final year at the Mayo Clinic Alix School of Medicine in Florida. The reason? The former firefighter and paramedic has two other roles that he says are even more important than medicine. Nick is a husband and father of two. He recognizes that he's considered a nontraditional student, and the 36-year-old has ambitious goals for his career, but it can't come at the expense of his family.
