I spent two hours finishing my homework.

Is "I spent two hours finishing my homework" a correct sentence ? I think it's incorrect to use "spend" to imply how long it take you to finish something or reach a goal, but how long an action lasts. If you say " I spent two hours doing my homework", that means "your doing homework" lasted two hours(and doesn't necessarily imply you finished it)so it's OK. but "I spent two hours finishing my homework" is wrong, because "finishing homework" can't last for two hours. I also think sentences like "It took me how long to do something" are only used for complete actions. so "It took me two hours to do my homework" implies that you finished it although there is no any word about "finish". "It took me two hours to sleep" is incorrect, because sleep is just a state not a complete action and "It took me two hours to get to sleep" is okay, because getting to sleep is a goal you can reach. is anything I say wrong?

25/20 =1.25 -1 =.25 x 100 =25% more time spent on his HW.

25/20 =1.25 x 100 =125% He is right.

By saying "125% more time", he is saying that the extra time he spent was 125% of the orginal amount.

Last week he spent 20 hours. This week, he spent 25 hours, 5 more hours.

Comparing the extra hours (5) to the hours that he spent last week (20):  5/20  =  25% extra time.

The hours that he spent this week, when compared to the hours last week, is 125%; but this isn't 125% more time.

avatar

I have puzzled over this question before.

He spent 125% of his time on homework compared to last week BUT I think that is 25% MORE than last week.

Last night Vivian spent 90 minutes doing Homework,2/3 of an Hour reading ,and 480 seconds making her lunch for the next day .How many more minutes did Vivian spend doing homework than she did reading and making lunch

1 Expert Answer

he spent an hour doing his homework last night

Homework = 90 minutes

Reading = 40 minutes (An hour equals 60 minutes and if you divide 60 by 3, you get 20. The reason I divided 60 by 3 is because it mentions that Vivian spent 2/3 hour reading. One-third of 60 is 20, and you can multiply 20 by 2 to get 2/3 of 60.)

Making lunch = 8 minutes (One minutes equals 60 seconds so divide 480 seconds by 60 seconds to figure out how many minutes that is.)

Add the minutes she spent doing homework plus the minutes she spent making lunch to get 48. How many more means to subtract so subtract 48 from 90 to get your final answer.
