About VITREE

Vellore Institute of Technology Research Entrance Examination (VITREE) is conducted for admission to various Ph.D./Direct Ph.D. programmes in VIT group of Institutions. VITREE - July 2024 session will be conducted on 05 th May 2024 (Based on election date, there is a possibility that the exam date might be subject to change only on the coinciding locations) in 59 cities across India. The duration of the examination will be 2 hours. All questions will be Multiple Choice Questions and one mark for right and '0' mark for the wrong answer. The question paper for Ph.D. will have 100 MCQs (Technical - 70 questions; English communication skills - 15; Statistics and probability - 15 questions) and the question paper for Direct Ph.D. will have 100 MCQs (Technical - 80 questions; English communication skills - 20 questions). Candidates, who fulfil the eligibility criteria prescribed, shall appear for VITREE, a Computer Based Test for 2 hours at their test venue of choice. The Ph.D. programme at VIT-AP admits bright students to carry out research in engineering, basic sciences, humanities and management disciplines. The major areas of research are Computer Science and Engineering, Electronics and Communication Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry, Management – HR, Marketing, Economics, Law, English etc.

  • Internal Full Time: A candidate who wishes to work for Ph.D. / Integrated Ph.D. degree on full time basis (including project staff working in sponsored projects being carried out at VIT) should apply in the prescribed form on or before the specified date.
  • 10+2+4+2 (patternof studies)or any equivalent in Engineering degree 10+2+5 year Integrated M.Tech. programme, Integrated M.S Programme in Engineering 10+2+4+1 for Ph.D. in Engineering (Foreign Degree holders also eligible to apply)
  • 10+2+4 or 5 (patternof studies) or any equivalent degree in Engineering degree
  • 10+2+3+2 (patternof studies) or any equivalent in Non-Engineering degree 10+2+5 year Integrated. M.Sc.(Biotech)in Non-Engineering degree
  • Master’s degree in Engineering / Technology in the relevant discipline with a minimum of 60% marks (of all the years /semesters) wherever marks are awarded, or a CGPA 6.5 on a 10-point scale in cases where letter grades are awarded or Equivalent qualifications like M.Sc. (Engineering) / M.S. [By Research] / M.Tech. [By Research]
  • M.Sc. Computer Science, M.Sc. (IT), and MCA degree holders are eligible to apply for a Ph.D. Programme in Computer Science Engineering / Information Technology
  • For all research programmes, it is mandatory that candidates should have studied their previous degree programmes (UG and PG) in the regular, full-time mode.
  • Graduates must have an outstanding academic record in their Bachelor’s Degree in Engineering / Technology is eligible to apply. A minimum of 75% marks or a CGPA of 7.5 is mandatory on a 10- point scale
  • Master’s degree in the relevant discipline of science with a minimum of 60% marks or a CGPA of 6.5 on a 10-point scale is mandatory.
  • Master’s degree in the relevant discipline of Social sciences and Languages with a minimum of 60% marks or a CGPA of 6.5 on a 10-pointscale is mandatory
  • A master’s degree in Business Administration / CA / ICWA/M.A. Economics/M.Com/M.Tech with a minimum of 60% marks or aCGPA of 6.5 on a 10-point scale is needed.
  • Master’s Degree in law (LLM / ML) from any recognized university / Institute, in the relevant field with a minimum of 60% marks or 6.5 CGPA on a 10-point scale.
  • Selection will be based on the performance in the VITREE – July 2024 score, PG degree marks, research proposal, and personal interview. Standard Graduate Admission Deadline

  • Application A standard university application is required.
  • GPA of 3.000 or better either over last 60 hours or overall.
  • If GPA is above 2.750 but below 3.000, applicant must take the GRE or MAT and meet the following minimum scores: GRE: combined 294 on the verbal and quantitative sections and 3.5 on the analytical writing. MAT: 390
  • A passing score on the content state assessment (TExES) associated with the target teacher certification. Must take content state assessment as a Pre-Admission Content Test (PACT)

Admissions Requirements

  • A baccalaureate degree in engineering or a related technical field, such as math, physics, behavioral sciences or health sciences. Appropriate academic background varies by graduate specialization.
  • A minimum grade point average of 3.0 (on a scale of 4.0) for all undergraduate work undertaken during the last two years of the applicant's studies. 
  • GRE scores are optional for PhD program admissions.
  • We will also consider demonstrated practical engineering experience and demonstrated leadership skills
  • Earned MS degree or demonstrated research experience is preferred for admission to the PhD Program

In addition to the above requirements, proficiency is required in mathematics through the level of multivariate calculus, probability and statistics considered from a calculus point of view, and computer programming. Students whose backgrounds have not adequately prepared them to enter the graduate curriculum directly may be asked to take appropriate undergraduate courses. Credit for these courses will not be applied toward the minimum number of hours required for the MS/ME degrees. In exceptional cases, the department may admit an applicant who does not meet all these requirements; in such cases, the department will set special performance criteria for continuing in the program.

Application Fee

A non-refundable application fee of $85 must be submitted for each graduate application before it will be reviewed. You can pay the application fee in your Application Status Portal via credit card. The link to pay your application fee will appear shortly after you submit your application. If you have an issue with your application fee, please contact [email protected] .

We do not offer application fee waivers for our programs. Only US Military/Veterans and their spouses and participants in special programs such as Americorps, McNair Scholars, EOP, HEOP, SEEK, or Project 1000 are eligible for an application fee waiver. Program participants must also be a US citizen or permanent resident. There are no exceptions. If you are eligible and requesting a waiver, please contact [email protected] with documentation of your military service or program participation.

Materials Checklist

Personal statement.

Your application package must include a brief statement of purpose describing your background and your academic and career goals. The Personal Statement can be typed into the space provided on the application or uploaded electronically to the application.

Transcripts

Unofficial copies of transcripts are to be uploaded to your online application. Official transcripts are not required at the time the application is submitted. If an applicant is accepted and decides to attend our program, official transcripts will be requested at that time.

Letters of Recommendation

Three letters of recommendation are required for PhD program applicants. While we will accept letters from professional sources, we strongly prefer letters from professors who are acquainted with your academic interests, achievements and abilities.

Requests for letters of recommendation will be emailed to your recommenders upon submitting your application form. Recommenders can submit their recommendations online. Once submitted, they are automatically uploaded to your online application.

Graduate Record Examination (GRE)

GRE scores are optional for the PhD program admissions. Please note: the GRE may be required for some scholarship/fellowships.

English Language Proficiency

International applicants are required to provide proof of English proficiency. The exam results must be dated within two years from your proposed date of admission and remain valid upon entering the term for which you applied. The University at Buffalo has a minimum TOEFL score requirement of 550 (paper-based) or 79 (internet-based). On IELTS, UB requires an overall score of 6.5.

Information and arrangements to take the GRE and TOEFL exams can be made by contacting the Educational Testing Service (ETS) . It is strongly recommended to make test arrangements early in the year so sufficient time can be allowed for the results to be reported before our application deadline.

International Student Financial Form

All international applicants must submit a completed financial form. Answer all questions thoroughly. An I-20 cannot be issued without this form and supporting documentation showing necessary funds for each year of intended study (two years for a master's program; five years for a PhD program). Financial Aid

If you are interested in financial aid in the form of a teaching assistantship or research assistantship, please check the appropriate box on your application form. University Hosts Immersive Satellite Imagery Workshop

Satellite imagery is becoming an increasingly valuable tool in many fields, and several Chargers recently had the opportunity to learn how to apply it to do everything from tracking the conflict in Ukraine to determining whether images had been tampered with.

As Rachel Swanson ’24 examined the satellite images before her, she was learning how to decipher what was in them, as well as whether they’d been altered. It was a unique and exciting opportunity for her to build her skills while learning with and from her fellow Chargers.

The session was part of an interdisciplinary workshop that was recently held on campus. Titled “Monitoring Conflict from Space: Satellite Imagery as ‘Unbiased” Data,’” it brought together students and faculty for a timely discussion about the importance of satellite images and how they can be a vital tool in many fields, from national security and political science to environmental science .

“Being able to use this knowledge is important because it can be beneficial to know how to look at an image,” said Swanson, a criminal justice major . “I enjoy getting to learn from experts who can teach me different forms of analysis that I can carry with me into my career.”

A rare opportunity

Interest in the use of satellite images has been increasing, and imagery is becoming more readily available. Professionals in a variety of fields are turning to satellite imagery as a critical source of data. As part of the workshop, participants explored real-life situations and events. They tracked the development of Russian military forces along the border of Ukraine in 2014 and explored how the data can inform our understanding of the geopolitical situation in the region then and now.

Hosted by the University’s Henry C. Lee College of Criminal Justice and Forensic Sciences in collaboration with the University’s Connecticut Institute of Technology and its Center for Analytics , it was organized by Michelle Fabiani, Ph.D. , an assistant professor of criminal justice.

Dr. Fabiani’s research focuses on developing the tools and methods to mitigate and prevent crime, exploring topics such as human smuggling, domestic terrorism, and archaeological looting in conflict zones. Her work integrates technology-driven data collection, historical analysis, and complex quantitative methods – including satellite imagery. She was excited to share her expertise with her fellow Chargers.

“The workshop was well attended, and the participants particularly appreciated the opportunity to work directly with satellite imagery,” said Dr. Fabiani. “It is rare for students or faculty to get to work with raw imagery and to see how the data created from them can be used in making decisions or in a forensic investigation.”

‘A unique skill’

As part of the workshop, participants also learned how to use satellite imagery to generate spatiotemporal data on geopolitical events using the software ArcGIS Pro. The workshop offered a unique opportunity for them to learn to evaluate satellite imagery in the media to determine the authenticity of images.

For Swanson, the criminal justice major, the workshop was expansive, enabling her to build her skills and her network. She enjoyed the immersive learning opportunities it offered.

“This helps me make connections with other people and offers me a unique skill to be able to present what I can do,” she said. “Being able to examine satellite images and tell others what could be wrong with them can create advantages in many ways. This workshop also allowed me to consider how many different ways satellite imagery can be used and the possible good it could do.”
