Spending time with different species, getting to know their unique personalities, and learning their stories can change our entire perspective on animals. Our supporters shared what first inspired them to spread kindness and compassion for animals.

E very day, we’re inundated with messages telling us that humans are superior to animals—to the point where it’s perfectly legal for humans to subject animals to horrific forms of cruelty and violence. But, we don’t have to accept this idea. Instead, as we learn more about the different species who share our world, we can choose to treat animals with care and compassion.

Around the world, people show their passion for helping animals in different ways—whether it’s raising awareness for the benefits of leaving animals off your plate and going vegan, or [taking to the streets]( https://thehumaneleague.org/article/disrupt-costco-headquarters "Changemakers disrupt "business as usual" at Costco headquarters") to protest against the ways companies exploit animals. But, no matter how they take action for animals, all of these changemakers have one thing in common: they’re guided by an unwavering commitment to creating a better world for animals.

We asked our community what first inspired them to make a difference for animals, and their stories touched our hearts and minds. Read their stories to learn how a little bit of compassion can change the lives of humans and animals alike.

Why you're for the animals

Because chickens are friends, not food.

I always loved birds and animals. 12 years ago, I read a newspaper story that told the story of a terrified pig at a slaughterhouse being beaten with a metal bar as it tried to climb a wall to escape. I was horrified. No animal should ever be made to suffer like that and with the story about slaughterhouse workers mistreating animals. I put my plate down and went vegan immediately. I had never eaten chicken as a child. My folks had chickens and they were my friends! There are so many products that are cruelty-free in supermarkets now so if you love animals, don't eat them.

When I sit with my dog and cat and see their personalities and know how they feel love and pain and I think of those who are tortured and caged up, it breaks my heart. I told my anatomy teacher in nursing school I could not and would not dissect a cat. He said as long as I could pass the lab final I didn't have to do it. I went vegetarian immediately upon reading Animal Liberation . That also involved what brand of paper towels I bought, what cosmetics I used (cruelty-free), and what clothes I wore—no more wool or leather. Going vegan was a work in progress and I finally did so this year after being more active with signing petitions and sending emails for the animals and posting those on my Facebook newsfeed.

What Does It Mean to Be an “Animal Lover”?

Before anyone gets morally outraged at even the hint of criticism towards Betty White, just remember, vegans don’t exist to mitigate animal suffering, we don’t defend animal exploiters, we defend animals. The above video, courtesy Animals Australia is the GLOBAL STANDARD for killing pigs, CO2 is AVMA-approved in the USA and accepted as “humane” elsewhere.

So if you feel inspired to malign people for defending animals, watch the above footage and tell me how creating the conditions and profiting from the exploitative control subjecting animals to abject fear, pain, suffering, and violent death, is remotely aligned with being an “animal lover”. And be sure to acknowledge that the same form of gas in the US is vehemently and aggressively opposed by “animal lovers” who care about cats and dogs (gas is still used to “humanely euthanize” shelter cats and dogs in the US) while consuming pigs. Until humans end their exploitation of “unworthy” animals, “worthy” animals will continue to suffer as well, it’s all related. SL

The term “animal lover” sounds like a relic of a bygone era, pre-1990s at least. For modern animal rights advocates, “animal lover” sounds quaint, but the mainstream media seem content with it. Granted, being an “animal lover” is better than being an animal hater, but should we embrace this attribution as a tribute to the designee or as a favor to animals? What might animals say if they could weigh in?

Tributes to celebrity actress Betty White, who died December 31, 2021 at age 99, led me to raise the question in a comment I posted to  Animals 24-7 ’s more sobering look at Betty White’s decades-long association with animal welfare. The thoughts presented here expand that comment. I knew Betty White from ads for  Golden Girls , a popular TV comedy in which she starred from 1985-1992. Scanning tributes to her in early January 2022, prompted by her death, I saw among the accolades that she was a front for the American Humane Association’s seal of assurances that “No Animals Were Harmed” in the making of films in which animals appeared under AHA’s oversight. I think there is evidence to the contrary.

A question I asked was, did Betty eat animals? She not only ate them; she publicized her consumption of animals to the point of being the celebrity booster for  a hot dog business in Los Angeles . Of course, she is beloved by the owner of that business. A hot dog has been named for her with proceeds from sales going to the Los Angeles Zoo.

Unfortunately, the term “animal lover,” whether attributed to a celebrity or anyone else, suggests that the person may be more cloyingly sentimental than truly sensitive toward nonhuman animals, their feelings, needs and miserable frustration in institutional captivity. Thus I believe it is time to retire the term “animal lover”, which is as demeaning and patronizing toward animals as this same type of attribution would be in being used to characterize a socially privileged person who “loves” an oppressed human population.

The fact that Betty White has been gushed over, almost universally, by celebrities, media, and other commentators signals that she was an “animal lover” who ensured that the status quo would not be disturbed and would even be enshrined. Betty’s love for animals is reminiscent of white people’s professed “love” for cute little “colored” children, as reflected in Harriet Beecher Stowe’s 1852 anti-slavery novel  Uncle Tom’s Cabin: Life Among the Lowly . Such “love” is quite compatible with an approval of enslavement of the “loved” objects of affection.

Don’t Disturb the Dead

A couple of comments to the  Animals 24-7  critique of Betty White’s animal-loving career complained that she should be allowed to rest in peace unexamined as to her actual commitment and contribution to animals and their so-called welfare. To which I replied that the critique legitimately looks beyond the clichés to provide a fuller picture of Betty’s involvement on behalf of animals.

By putting herself in the limelight, she invited scrutiny.

Betty White was a public figure who constructed a persona for public consumption. The fact that she died or is still fresh in the grave does not exempt her public doings from examination, including criticism when the shadow falls between fiction and fact. I believe she honestly cared about some animals – the kinds of animals it is socially “safe” to “love” and the kind of care that does not rock the boat. At the same time, the animals she was photographed with, whether wildlife captives or pampered pets, were props for her celebrity image. She and her publicists knew that the public loved her twinkly face snuggled up to captive creatures who were made to appear to “smile” for the camera.

I posted a review on Amazon along these lines, in October 2021, of  New Yorker  staff writer Susan Orlean’s collection of essays in her book,  On Animals   – hailed mightily on Amazon by the pundit media. I’m pleased that so far my customer review has garnered the majority of “Helpful” clicks. I wrote:

As for this superficial set of essays by Susan Orlean assembled in “On Animals”: The type of “love” Orlean patronizingly has for animals is the type conventional reviewers love to praise and promote since it conveys, falsely but comfortably, that you can “love” nonhuman animals the way many white people in the South “loved” their African-American slaves while supporting their victims’ enslavement against their will (of course) and forcing them, through legalized torture and terror, to work or die or be sold.

Orlean speaks of the animals she is “fascinated with” as if they were nothing more than objects for her amusement while ensuring that complacent readers will be unfazed by the human brutality and animal suffering she describes and supports. She shows no true respect for our fellow creatures, making her book just one more self-satisfied effusion that goes nowhere but back to the beginning. So much for the globetrotting aspect. ‑  Karen Davis

Animal Lover and Visit to the Animal Park

How it works

For the longest time, I never thought I would one day opt to go to the animal park.

I am a true animal lover who has never been to animal park. Phenomenon One day, several years back, a friend of mine wanted to visit the zoo and so asked if I could accompany him. At first, I was a bit resistant but then I later gave in to his idea because there was not much to lose. My parents gave me enough allowance for the trip and so we set off to the animal park. It was on a weekend and I did not have any school assignment that was pending. With no doubt in mind, I can confidently say that visiting the animal park was among one of the best days of my life. To see animal behaviour and interaction amazed me so much that I wished to know all about wild animals. The tour guide who was with us gave us sufficient information and took us to areas where interesting animals were located. Visiting the animal park was significant to me because it enabled me to realise the beauty and importance of nature.

The tour guide first started off by taking us to see the giraffes. One can read the giraffe’s tall neck in books or on the internet but the real satisfaction is during one on one interaction with the animal. The giraffe has uniquely defined legs as well as necks. I guess that is why it can reach for its own food in high above places. At the zoo, however, the giraffes are not placed near trees so they depend on humans to feed them. It was an amazing experience when the tour guide allowed my friend and I to feed the giraffe. The giraffe lowered its neck low enough to reach my hand and take the food. The feeling of the giraffe tongue taking the last bit of food from my hand was an amazing experience plus I realised giraffes were very friendly animals. Their natural skin is one of a kind and distinguishable amongst other animals.

The second stop was at the snake’s section where we even got to see the anaconda. While at the snake section, we could be able to see how the snake moves. The snakes were placed inside a glass chamber so they could not attack the persons present at the park. I realised the presence of the anaconda and was somehow intimidated by its size. At some point, it opened its mouth and I could see the sharp front teeth. The tour guide gave us quite some information on the deadliness of the snake poison and what to do if bitten. I also came to learn that some snakes have the capability of swallowing a human being. The snakeskin is unique in that it is able to expand and hence swallow a human. We were allowed to take pictures of the snakes then continued on with our journey.

Thirdly, we came across monkeys and ostriches. I realised that the monkeys had different breeds and so not all of them looked alike. They were even separated according to their breed types. I noticed that the smaller monkeys were so playful and engaged the elder ones in physical activities. The elder monkeys climbed from one point to another in such a fast manner while all we could do was take pictures. From where the monkeys were located, I could see banana peels among other food staff on the ground. While transitioning to the next section, we saw ostriches from a distance. They had relatively long legs and this made the journey quite an experience.

The next stop was in the leopard section. Leopards are carnivorous animals that obtain their food by hunting prey. However, in the animal park, the leopards are provided with enough meat so they do not have to hunt. While at the leopard section, I noticed the leopards to be resting high on the tree branches. I did not see how the leopards climbed up to the top of the tree but the tour guide informed us of how the animal does it so comfortably. In a normal case scenario, I learnt that leopards would study their prey from above the tree then make a move on them. The leopards are rather fast animals and do not have mane which makes it difficult to differentiate the male from the female.

The most amazing part of the whole animal park experience is when the tour guide took us to the lion section. Lions are the famous of all wild animals and so getting to see them was really exciting. It was not possible to see the lions in action since they were constrained. The lions have a well-defined body structure and I guess that’s why they intimidate other animals. Their skin colour enables them to adapt well in the savannahs/deserts. I was able to notice the mane on the male lion and somehow I thought they looked beautiful. From a distance, I could notice the lions claw and learnt that they were actually retractable. Our visit to the park was in the daytime and so the lions were mostly in a sleeping mood since they had already been fed. I really wished I could hear the lion roar but I guess that was an experience for another day.

All in all, the animal park was an interesting place to visit. The wild animals reserved there to highlight the facts about the most common known animals. Given that it was my first time at the zoo, I came to learn a lot about the animal kingdom. The treatment and care given to the zoo animals are enough since the animals rarely misbehave. The different kinds of snakes and monkeys among other animals brings one to the realisation that nature has more to offer than anticipated. Given the different types of breeds that the animals have, they, therefore, have different capabilities and survival techniques. At some point, I was able to take pictures with some animals for remembrance purposes. The idea of my friend to accompany him to the zoo proved to be one of the best days of my life and I will forever treasure that memory. The event was so significant and successful that we were among the last people to leave the animal park.

All animals are amazing but my favourite animal is the dog. Dogs are very loyal and make great pets. They love their owners and protect them from dangers. Dogs are largely carnivorous and eat meat, bones, organs, and some plant-based food.

Dogs are closely related to wolves, coyotes, and foxes and were domesticated by man thousands of years ago. They served as companions during hunts as well as protectors and guards. All animals are unique and amazing in their own ways. I love them all but my favourite animal is the lion. Lions are wild animals and their natural habitat includes scrublands, grasslands, savannahs, and rocky hills. They were historically found in many places around the world but now, due to loss of habitat and illegal hunting activities, they are mostly found in zoos, wildlife sanctuaries, and reserves. However, they can still be found in the wild in Africa as well as in the Gir forest in Gujarat, India. 

Lions are majestic animals and are known as the ‘King of the jungle’. There are many different subspecies of lions, like Asiatic lions, Barbary lions, Congo lions, Transvaal lions, and African lions. Male lions have a beautiful signature mane around their neck and are much larger than the females of the same species. Male lions are known to act as the protectors of the pride while the females do all the hunting.

Pride is a family unit of lions that may contain a few lions, a dozen or so lionesses, and their adolescent and young ones. Each pride has its own territory and lions mark and defend these areas by roaring and scent-marking. These territories are fiercely defended against intruding lions and male lions may sometimes get into huge fights over their territories. 

Lions usually prey on medium to large animals like zebras, antelopes, hippopotamuses, and buffaloes but they can also kill and eat smaller or larger animals, depending on the need. They are also known to eat animals killed and left by other predators. Lionesses stalk their prey from nearby cover and then leap and lunge at its neck, biting and strangling it until it is killed. Members of the pride then come forward to feed on the kill. An adult lion can eat about 34 kilograms of meat at once. 

Lions usually breed once every year in captivity but in the wild, they breed once every two or three years. Lion cubs are born with dark spots on their fur coat which fade away as they mature. They can follow their mother after 3 months and can participate in hunting after 11 months.

However, they still need assistance and can not survive on their own before two years of age. The cubs become adults at about three to four years of age and while most female cubs become members of their mother’s pride, male cubs are forced out and become nomads. 

Lions are incredible animals and have always intrigued me. They are truly the ‘kings’.

Americans love their pets deeply, and many consider themselves to be animal lovers. But does getting more upset over animals than humans mean we love them more than people? Is there something wrong with us? In this article, we’ll take an in-depth look why it sometimes feels like we care more our pets more than our next-door neighbors.

The weakest among us

Empathy, the ability to understand and share the feelings of others, is a complex emotion for us humans. This is the reason why it is important to understand the  definition of empathy , which is “the ability to sense other people's emotions, coupled with the ability to imagine what someone else might be thinking or feeling.” Because of the constant media barrage of violence, death, and despair, we are becoming increasingly desensitized to the suffering of other humans.  Social media  is also believed to be a large contributor to the growing lack of empathy for others. The study’s participants were asked to respond to a fake news story about a victim who was assaulted with a baseball bat, leaving them unconscious with several broken limbs. While the story was the same, it differed in one crucial detail; the identity of the victim changed. It was either a one-year-old baby, an adult human, a six-year-old dog, or a puppy. Respondents showed the same level of empathy for the baby, the puppy, and the adult dog, but significantly less for the adult human being.

This can also relate to the human-animal bond many of us feel, as they require our attention, help, and concern. The natural affection we feel for animals can be compared to the affection we feel for our children. We impulsively care for them and desire to help them because they are unable to easily help themselves. Our perception of adult humans is that they can easily speak up for their rights or defend themselves from danger.

If we analyze our feelings carefully, we often find that most of our adoration of animals centers on dogs and cats. Additionally, we sometimes might feel empathy for large, charismatic wild animals such as elephants, dolphins, or lions. When we read about a lion or an elephant who is hunted and killed in the wild, our response is often one of anger – almost as much anger as hearing stories of abuse and neglect of dogs and cats.

Another type of love that leads to harm is the love of animals. It is better than the love of things because an animal understands your passions as a human being and has the capability of returning love too. Nevertheless, this type of love is still not as great as the love of human beings. The dilemma of loving animals is that it is a one dimensional relationship. It is dictated by you and you define the creature because you love it so much you expect it to become human which in essence is inhumane because after all, an animal as an animal, it is not human. (2004) Examples of inhumane treatment of animals not only have to do with animal testing or being non-vegetarian. Inhumanities upon animal consist of doing anything to an animal that tries to make it closer to a human being such as dressing it up like a human, giving it a bath with human shampoo, or giving your dog a pedicure. An animal’s true essence is to be in the wild or in whatever environment it comes from and any humanization that human beings impose on an animal ends up being torturous for the animal. Humans fail to realize that an animal might be tortured by being treated as a human. Your own conception of good is imposed on the animal whereas it might not be good for them. For example, although we might think it is nice to give our pets a shower in our bathtub the chemicals we use on our bodies might be harmful for them and cause allergic reactions.

Introduction

My favourite animal, as the topic strikes, a picture of our favourite animal comes to our mind. My favourite animal is a dog. Dogs are very funny, sensible, and loyal creatures. Mostly we find pets in form of dogs and that too of different breed and varieties. I have a great passion and love for dogs. I find them to be the most loyal creature.

Few Characteristics of Dogs

As a dog lover, I am enlisting here a few characters of a dog:

• They have a very friendly attitude. Generally, they wag their tails when are happy but not always.
• They have a feeling of jealousy. When my sister gets closer to me, my pet dog starts barking.
• They can easily sense the danger and try to convey the same by running here and there.
• When they are left alone they usually make a loud noise and become angry.
• The most fascinating character is they are very faithful and loyal. They really need the presence; it is shown up when they lick after I arrived home.
• They can easily come to know when we feel sad, and even they try to do something so that our mood is consoled.

My favourite animal is a dog. Most of the people have a love for dogs and therefore we can see dogs kept as a pet animal in most of the houses. Dogs have proved their faithful attitude towards man. It can be observed from ancient times. Even the early men used to tame dogs. In villages, we can see dogs living like a family with the people over there .

Dogs are creatures with four legs, two eyes, two ears, one nose and one tail. They are of various shape and sizes; they have both flesh-eating and normal food eating teeth. There are many of the varieties of dogs like Doberman, German shepherd, Labrador, golden retriever etc. There are some of the breeds possessing good intelligence and smartness. They are used by our crime branch for the detection of crimes and situations. Dogs generally are of various colours, brown, black, spotted, golden etc.

One of the fascinating behaviour about dogs I have noted down is that they won’t harm the small children ever, instead, they love them unconditionally. They even protect them from any kind of harm. Dogs are our good friends and help to erode our loneliness. They understand our pain and grief. They are perfect guards and friends. They are good learners, as they come to learn a lot when trained and do the action and work in the same way.

Meal of Dogs

Generally, dogs eat bread, fish, meat, bones, and different organs. But can also eat milk, vegetables and rice. They should be fed with proper diet if domesticated.

Faithful Nature of a Dog

The dog is said to be a very fascinating and faithful animal. They have love and loyalty for their owner. I would like to quote an example of the same. In my neighbourhood, there was a pet dog with a nickname Julie, of Pomeranian breed. There was a robbery 6 months ago in my neighbour’s house and the dog came to sense the same, as a result, it started barking to make the family members aware, tried its level best.

But unfortunately was injured badly. It was very brave that even after getting injured, did not lose its hope and it was said that it fought till the robbers left the house and next day the news was there in the newspaper for the same. Even man could not be standing for anybody, in the way a dog did.

I do have a love for dogs, but it won’t mean that I love only the pet dogs. I do have love and care for the road and street dogs. We should care for the animals nearby as they cannot speak and express their hunger or pain. Hence, we should have love and affection as well as responsibility towards the animals in our surrounding as they play a major role.

My favourite animal is an elephant. I am basically fond of elephants. They appear to me as the most friendly creature of this earth. As soon as the picture of elephant comes to my mind I start feeling like some divine creature filled with immense attractive nature. They are very playful, often seen enjoying with water by splashing it over one another especially the baby elephants. I find elephants as the most fascinating animal on earth and at the same time also express my fear for their drastic reduction in their numbers.

The elephants have to pay the price of their tusks by losing their lives. The process of taking out tusk is really a crucial one. They are also hunted for obtaining meat and skin.
• The expansion in human settlements is resulting in reducing the number of the living species of the elephants, the shelter and food facilities are destructed. They require large space along with more food, thus if the same is not available will move these elephants towards extinction.
• Elephants are also affected by various infections and disease, thus often die earlier to their supposed death.
• According to Hindu mythology, elephants are considered to be the sign of lord Ganesha and are subject to worship, and on other hand are killed for enjoyment or obtaining meat, skin, and tusk.

An Incident of Kerala – Related to Elephant’s Death

The inhuman nature of man was revealed on 5 June 2020, when we came to hear about the death of an elephant due to consumption of a pineapple filled with explosive. The elephant was pregnant. It came to the village in search of some food and ate the pineapple given by some people of the village itself. The animal had faith in humans, so ate the fruit, but the pineapple was filled up with explosive and burnt up the whole intestinal and digestive system of the elephant. She died of grief and pain; also suffered as she could not save her unborn baby.

I was shocked and cried to hear such an insane act. The thought which came to my mind was how anybody can reach such level of cruelty. There was much news we came across. The animals are creatures which cannot speak and if they trust us, we should also prove our love and loyalty rather make them suffer.

The elephants are the creatures which are most sensible, compassionate, sensitive, and caring ones. They are and had been accompanying human beings from ancestral times. But the race of development is deleting many of our wild animals. Elephants too are at great risk. They should be protected by both government and public effort.

If I Were An Animal Essay Example

Throughout the world, there are millions of different species. Whether it be the fish that swim in the sea or the monkeys that live in the jungle, the list never seems to end. Living my life as a human and seeing animals’ lives from a different perspective, it is safe to say that if I could be any animal I wanted, I would be a dolphin. Dolphins are best known for their intelligence and  playful nature. One of the things I most enjoy is to socialize and play around, two very prominent traits in dolphins. Aside from the similar traits I see between dolphins and myself, they also live in the ocean, one of my most treasured places. Everyday dolphins spend their lives swimming in the ocean with millions of other animals and enjoying their life in the sun. The beach is my absolute favorite vacation spot, so being able to live there would be a dream. Another distinguishing quality I find between dolphins and myself is the concept of group work. Dolphins are most commonly known to travel in packs. I thoroughly enjoy working with others rather than working alone, which is another reason I see similarities between dolphins and myself. 

Interpretations are something that often come into play when considering how you view others. Often, people will contrast interpretations of different things and people, and they are rarely ever the same. If I were to be transformed into an animal, not by choice, I believe I would be transformed into a bumblebee. The idea of becoming a bumblebee is never something I considered until I put into account some of the traits they possess. For starters, I see myself as a very sociable, high-energy person, but to others, it can sometimes be taken as overly social and too much energy. I believe that this relates to the bumblebee because they are known to fly around and constantly bother people. The never-ending sound of buzzing from ear to ear and constant swatting is what most people picture when thinking of a bee. The sounds of buzzing the bee makes can be connected to my sociable side. The idea of bothering people can be connected to how bumblebees fly around people but are known for not stinging, meaning I sometimes talk too much, but never with bad intentions. I believe that I am seen as a bumblebee by my friends because I am most sociable when with them. To others, I could be seen as a more shy, reserved animal. 

The animal I would choose to be, a dolphin, and the animal I believe others see me as, a bumblebee, are two very different species. One lives in the ocean, and one lives in a hive, one is big, and one is small, but when comparing their traits I see many similarities. One of the most prominent traits the two species share is that they are extremely sociable and high energy. These are two traits that I believe are strongly displayed on a daily basis. Another common trait the two share is that they are both known to work and travel in groups. Dolphins travel as a pack, and Bees work and pollinate together. The idea of working in a group is something I prefer overworking individually. In some ways, I believe you have control over how others perceive you, but there is always a part that is just out of your control. Ultimately, I do not have a problem with being seen as a bumblebee, because I believe that is a good representation of who I am, and by knowing my flaws I can work to improve myself.
