Master's Thesis

ET&IT Logo

The Master's thesis is scheduled for the thirds semester and you will write it at a chair of the Department of Electrical and Information Engineering.

Admission to the Master's thesis is granted to students who have acquired and proven at least 45 credit points for the Master's degree and who have fulfilled any conditions imposed as part of the program admission. In justified exceptional cases, the chairperson of the examination board may also admit you to the Master's thesis if you have earned less than the 45 credit points mentioned. However, any conditions imposed as part of the admission to the program must be fulfilled by the time you are admitted to the Master's thesis.

You can complete your Master's thesis at a chair of your choice , but there is no right to a thesis at a specific chair. Address the question of at which chair you would like to write your thesis in good time. The courses will give you first insights into the working areas of the chairs. It is not mandatory to have attended certain courses in order to be able to write your thesis at a certain chair. However, it makes sense to have attended several courses at the chair where you want to write your Master's thesis during your studies.

The chairs provide information about possible topics in various ways: you will find announcements, for example, on the notice boards of the chairs or on their websites. You are also welcome to contact the professors and their research assistants and ask them about possible topics. In order to be able to offer you theses related to current research work, the corresponding topics are sometimes only worked out concretely when the chairs receive a request for a thesis.

In individual cases, theses in cooperation with the industry are offered. If you are interested in a thesis in a company, please contact the chairs whose research topics interest you and clarify whether they currently offer a Master's thesis in cooperation with a company. Since Master's theses at the Department of Electrical and Information Engineering can only be issued and supervised by professors and private lecturers working at the Institute, it is also mandatory to be supervised by a chair of the Institute in case of a thesis in the industry.

Once you have found a topic, submit an application for admission to the Master's thesis to the Examinations Office for Electrical and Information Engineering. You will find the relevant form on the website of the Examinations Office . It is recommended that you submit the application one to two weeks before the planned start of work on the thesis. As soon as you have submitted your application to the Examinations Office, the staff there will check whether you meet the admission requirements. If this is not the case, the chairperson of the examination board will check whether you will be granted an exemption and thus still be allowed to start your Master's thesis. As soon as the necessary decisions have been made, the examination office will inform both you and the chair where you would like to write your master's thesis about the result.

Please note the further training offers for academic work and in particular for academic writing , which are offered by the university library , among others. The "on demand" workshop "Academic Writing" by service center employee Michael Meißer is available to you directly at the Faculty of Engineering. Please feel free to get in touch with him .

Bachelor’s and Master’s thesis

Legal basis: § 12 of the Examination Procedure Regulations (PVO) (.pdf)

The exact procedures for a Bachelor's and Master's thesis varies from subject to subject. The basic terms and conditions are defined in the Examination Procedure Regulations (.pdf) and, if necessary, in the Double-Subject Examination Regulations (.pdf) . Double-subject students can generally choose the subject of their thesis, but in some subjects the choice is associated with certain conditions. Information on this and other subject-specific regulations can be found in your degree-specific Examination Regulations . Most institutes regularly host information events during which lecturers explain the subject-specific procedures. If anything is unclear, however, you can also contact your academic adviser or relevant Examination Office. In certain circumstances, the relevant Examinations Office's web pages also offer more detailed information.

Submission by the deadline

Thesis can deposit to the responsible Examination Office during opening hours. Outside of opening hours, the deadline mailbox at the side entrance of the administration tower at Christian-Albrechts-Platz 4 can also be used to deposit the thesis or other  deadline items. If  the envelope is deposited until midnight, it will be labelled with the receipt stamp  of the current day; if it is deposited after midnight, it will be labelled with the receipt stamp of the following day. It is important to note that the envelope will be forwarded by the in-house post service to the relevant department and that forwarding will take some time. It is therefore important to ensure that the address of the relevant Examination Office is correct.

Opportunities to repeat your thesis

"A failed thesis can be repeated once. The new thesis topic will be set in due time, in general within a period of three months following the evaluation of the first thesis. The topic may only be returned in the case a second thesis is written, if the student has not made use of this option when writing the first thesis." (§12 (9) of the Examination Procedure Regulations (PVO))

What are the "typical" procedures for a Bachelor's/Master's thesis?

  • Review: Are the subject requirements met?
  • Selection of topic and assessor and registration at Examination Office: Please contact your Examination Office for more information on exact procedures for the thesis.

Intelligent Systems

Bachelor and master theses.

the3

In the working group "Intelligent Systems" topics for theses projects are available at any time. In the following, we list some current examples of possible topics for bachelor and master theses - the topics are available in principle, but also offer a framework for what other topics might look like. Also, we list at the end of this page all the work already done. In general, we try to define a topic together with the interested students. This means that you are welcome to contact us even with a rough idea or a direction in which you would like to work. We try to involve our students in current research projects so that the topics are of practical use for our research group. Please note, however, that we assume that you already have all the necessary basic knowledge. This does not mean that you have to be an "expert" in the field of machine learning, for example - we are, however, not in a position to give you a basic course in the research and teaching area as part of a thesis project in addition to the learning content necessary for writing a student thesis. This means that ideally, you have already completed modules of our research group. Besides, you should be able to work with the chosen programming language (i.e. primarily JAVA or Python) without any help. We also assume that you have a strong interest in machine learning and intelligent systems!

Study contents

The internationally oriented graduate study programme Master of Science 'Marine Geosciences' promotes the latest state of marine geosciences and technology, in particular in the areas marine costal geology, past climates, biogeochemistry and paleoecology. The degree programme shall provide the student with the knowledge of fundamental terms of geological, biological, geochemical and physical processes in the ocean. Both basic and applied research are the objectives of the programme. As a result of the extensive marine sciences spectrum at CAU, the programme offers an insight into modern research topics. The graduate will be able to create and critically assess scientific results and to plan, carry out and evaluate ship and laboratory projects on their own responsibility. Its specific characteristic closely relates to the marine oriented research units at the Institute of Geosciences at CAU Kiel, in intently collaboration with the highly research oriented Helmholtz Centre of Ocean Research GEOMAR. It is precisely this collaboration that verifies interdisciplinary and sound professional education and serves to provide the students with qualifications to work successfully in companies, universities or in other public institutions both at home and abroad. Since the research of marine sciences is mainly international oriented, this programme is designed as an international study and all courses are offered in English. The courses offered can be subdivided into three categories, which modules are corequisite: core-courses, specialization and comprehensive courses. There are obligatory courses (69 credit points), which cover all aspects of Marine Geosciences (lectures and exercises) and will be completed by additional courses of the degree programmes 'Climate Physics' and 'Geophysics'. Furthermore the participation in marine or terrestrial field campaigns and / or project oriented data evaluation are obligatory.
