My dream house has lots of rooms and blue windows. It is yellow and has a big brown front door. There is a huge living room with comfortable sofas and enormous TV screen on the wall for my family and I to spend time together.

In the basement, there is a giant game room with a ping-pong table and drum set for me and my friends. It has a fridge for drinks and snacks.

There are extra bedrooms so my friends can spend the night .My bedroom is blue with lots of shelves for my toy car collection. There are lots of posters of my favorite actors and singers, but they are big electronic screens so they can change all the time! There is also a brand new computer, a sound system and a telescope because I love astronomy! My bed is special! You climb a tall ladder to get it, I sleep under a window, and I can see the stars at night!

Outside my house, there is giant swimming pool with water and field nearby for my beautiful black horse.

LESSON OVERVIEW

In this lesson students talk about their dream homes, revise vocabulary for describing homes and put it into practice through various speaking activities.

VOCABULARY FOR DESCRIBING HOMES

The lesson starts with a matching exercise in which students revise different types of homes. They match them with their definitions (e.g. cottage, detached house ) and also come up with two missing definitions. Afterwards, they work in pairs and, using some language for expressing opinions (e.g. I think, I suppose ), they discuss the advantages and disadvantages of living in three chosen types of homes. The next activity invites students to use their imagination and decide which aspects they would prioritise while buying or building their dream home. They look at a list, choose five and give reasons why (eg. price, big size ).

VIDEO & DESCRIBING HOMES

The second part of the lesson starts with a short video in which people describe their dream homes. Students look at a list of aspects discussed before and tick the ones mentioned by the speakers in the video. Then, they engage in a discussion about their personal preferences regarding a dream home. The next exercise gives students an opportunity to learn even more vocabulary for describing homes . They analyse another box with words and classify them into four categories: size, description, amenities and location. The following exercises provide students with oral practice of the language learnt in the lesson. First, they look at four photos of different homes and describe them. Then, they exchange opinions on different aspects of living in these types of homes. Finally, focusing on six given aspects, such as views or location , students reflect on their own dream homes and share opinions with partners.

It is a great lesson. It doesn’t teach us how to use functional language, but it also gives us knowledge of what kind of houses people could live in America. As an Indonesian, I do not have many types of houses here. It would be wonderful if you give an illustration or some pictures to the example of the houses so that we get the visualization or better image of how they are.

A   MY DREAM HOUSE   A

P.1  My   dream is to live in a big detached house surrounded by a big garden full of flowers and trees. I wouldn’t like to live in an apartment with blocks of flats and rude neighbors making noise in the middle of the night. My dream house should be located outside the city, on the outskirts of town where I can find true peace and happiness. Therefore, my dream house should have the characteristics that represent my spiritual world and personality with its location as well as its inner and outer design.  

P.2  F rom   my point of view, the location of my dream house is very important and the surroundings and the position of a house should be carefully considered.  I’ve always been fascinated by rivers and the sound of the birds in the mornings. I’d feel positive and lively if I was woken up by the sound of doves perched on the branches of the trees. In this respect, I imagine my dream house near a flowing river, built in the countryside. It would be located in such a place that I could find fresh water and air. In addition, my house’s position would enable me to have as many pets as possible since a large garden with enough space would provide shelter for them. Also, I’d like my dream house to be near to the city centre so that I might go to big shopping malls with my car if I needed to. As a matter of fact, peace and harmony combined with nature would be the basic feature of the location of my dream house with its closeness to the city for emergency situations and supplying the necessities.

P.3  M y dream house’s interior design should be carefully planned because I believe that beauty lies within the details. Consequently, I’d like it to have a big, spacious hall since it is the first place that you see as you come in through the front door. At the end of the hall, there would be a staircase leading upstairs. I’d like to decorate the walls of the hall with famous artist’s reproductions of still life paintings. For me, these paintings would give person feelings of relaxation and serenity. The first room on the right would be the living-room which is quite large and full of light. Day light is essential for me so I’d like to have big windows in the living room. A door from the living room would lead to a small study where I could write, read books and work on my assignments. This small room would make me feel calm and attentive so I could focus my attention to my projects. Upstairs there would be bedroom and bathroom. Also, my bedroom would reflect my inner world and privacy so it would be painted with my favorite color which is blue. My view is that blue is the color that represents my feelings of harmony and peace. In short I can say that, the interior of my dream house is like my spiritual world so I’d decorate it in such a way that all the rooms, objects and colors would symbolize my true feelings.

P.4  The  outer design of my dream house should be attractively decorated as much as the interior because I prefer to spend time outdoors. I desire to have magnificent gardens surrounding my house. The front garden should be full of flowers, bushes and fruit trees. The scent of flowers and fruit trees mixed in the air reminds me of heavenly moments filled with happiness and joy. The back garden should be very large so that I can have a lawn with a swimming pool. In addition, there would be another lawn which comes up to the patio. There would also be a flower bed near the back door and a path leading to the garden shed and the greenhouse, where I’d like to grow my own tomatoes, green peppers, parsleys, eggplants. Besides, there would be a large cage filled with different species of birds like peacocks or parrots. I’d let the door of the cage be open all the time for freedom is very important for me. Birds would come into the cage whenever they want to feed themselves. Watching colorful birds flying above my head while swimming in the pool would be a fantastic experience. Since the outside of my dream house would let me be alone with nature and fill my soul with peace and quietness, its design is very important and attentively arranged.

P.5  In  my opinion, each person has a dream house that continues to remain on his mind as long as he lives. Places we spend our life is very significant because our moods are affected by the design and the location. If we live in a place filled with noise, chaos and air pollution our feelings would tend to be negative. On the contrary, if we live in a place close to the serenity of nature, our minds, bodies and spirits will be filled with positive energies. That’s why I’d like my dream house be located on the outskirts of a city, encircled with flowers, trees and birds. Likewise, we either feel relaxed or tenser inside our homes. If the interior design and colors used arise feelings of anger or anxiety we will be unhappy and depressed in our houses. Therefore, I prefer to plan interior of my dream house to give me feelings of relaxation and joy. In conclusion, everything about my dream house would reflect my feelings, thoughts and my personality so when you step in my house, you would, in a way, get into my inner world.

The house that I fancy would be considerably big with four rooms and a spacious common area. My dream house should be comfortable for my parents, grandparents and siblings. The house should be equipped with all the modern amenities. It should have a big TV with a home theatre system and a Playstation attached to it. The walls of the house will have light colours that will make it appear bright. There will be sufficient light bulbs and lamps in every room. I also dream of a chandelier in the guest room and a big sofa where everyone will sit and enjoy watching TV together. My grandparents love reading. I wish that my dream house will have a reading space with lots of books.

I have a 3-year old pet dog called Tiger. I also want to have a small yet cosy space in my house for Tiger where he can sleep and relax when he grows old. The house will have beautiful interiors and will have all the facilities like a modern kitchen, three bathrooms, a staircase leading to the terrace, ACs, etc. My dream home should be the one where we all can live happily and comfortably.

I would also like to have a big living room and four other rooms that can be used as a bedroom and study. My dream house would be a place where I would live happily with my family. It would be large with four rooms and should have a big common room. My house would also be a wonderful place decorated with beautiful paintings.

My dream house would have a trampoline room, a pool, a small waterfall, and a big garden. My whole family would stay in every room. In my house, I would have an enormous kitchen where I could help my mother cook. Moreover, I would also have a game world. It would be a house where my family and my pets could live together, surrounded by a large garden full of flowers and trees.

Designing a Dream House – Elementary Style!

Here is a perfect challenge to practice using area and perimeter in a design project. Design your Dream House!

What a perfect idea this little project is! I still remember designing my dream house when I was a little girl. I filled notebooks with drawings of the rooms and where the furniture would be. I colored the walls all different colors (because this was way before the monochromatic neutral palettes that are popular today).  

One of my favorite memories was painting and decorating the bathroom in the first apartment my husband and I lived in. It had a claw foot tub- I mean a real one, antique and everything.   

So, I knew I would love this STEM Challenge! What about the students?

I know you are wondering how on earth students will design their dream house and you will be so surprised! It’s a paper/pencil activity . All you need is graph paper, markers, and the requirement sheet.

The Basics of Designing a Dream House

• Practice finding the area of shapes.
• Draw the room dimensions.
• Have a little fun with crazy over-the-top rooms.
• Calculate the total area of the house.
• Determine the cost of the house!

Practice Area and Perimeter Before Designing the Dream House

Let’s be honest- this is a tricky skill. Students struggle with remembering the difference between area and perimeter and how to find both measurements.   

Let me show you a fantastic way to practice this skill.   You need some blue painter’s tape!

Place the tape in various shapes using the tiles on your floor as a guide. I always include squares, rectangles, and some odd shapes like the one in the photo.  

To teach students how to find the perimeter I sit on the floor and show them that the side of one floor tile is one measure. Then I walk around on the blue tape and count off each measure. That’s the perimeter. I also leave a pencil on the spot I started on so I will know where to stop. Ha!  

After they practice a few of these we practice finding the area.

For this, I walk across the shape and step on each square. The number I end up with is the area of the shape. And we use the number SQUARED ! They totally get this because we are stepping on squares!  

This is a wonderful way for students to see the perimeter visually. Perimeter is the edge- the blue tape. And the area is inside the tape – all the inside squares.  

I hand them some graph paper and students walk to each shape I have created, draw it, and then count the perimeter measurement and the area measurement.

They have fun doing this and can we talk about how “hands-on” this is! It’s great practice for getting ready for this challenge.

Designing the Dream House

Students have graph paper and a list of requirements. Their dream house must have certain rooms. After they draw the required rooms they are free to add their own options.

I added the required rooms after trying this challenge with a test group. I found that most of the students drew elaborate rooms, like basketball courts and donut shops but somehow did not have a kitchen.

I guess they could just always eat donuts!

Adding Elaborate Rooms to the Dream House

With any space they have leftover, students are free to add their own ideas for rooms. It only takes one person to announce they are having an indoor pool and the students take off with this idea. Soon there are libraries, gyms, water slides, and movie theaters.

You can see some of the additions this student had and you can also see that he is working on the room dimensions on his requirement sheet.

This is where the learning starts! 

Calculating the Area of the Dream House

For each room in the house, students must list its area. They must write the dimensions and then the area in square units.

You can see in the photo that this house had 718 square units.   And now, it gets eye-opening! Students multiply their square units by a dollar amount to find the total cost of this dream h ome . They will gasp when they see that their house will cost more than $150,000! (Which is relatively not much in today’s world!)

Of course, it is at this point that I also bring in a talk about the size of the units on their paper. If each of the squares on their grid sheet is a one-foot square then the home they are dreaming of will fit inside our classroom. They have the dimensions of a tiny, tiny home. 

This is just a super little challenge and brings up many discussions. What size could the units be to have a normal-sized home? Square yards, maybe?
