Social Media: YouTube essay

Today, social media play an increasingly more important role in the life of society because users spend a lot of time online and they view social media as an important source of information about issues which users are concerned with. YouTube, being one of the mainstream social media, allows users to share their videos online, create their channels and, thus, create their virtual communities united by common interests. YouTube also becomes a tool of the promotion of individuals and ideas because users can use the social media to promote themselves and their ideas. In such a situation, the distinct feature of YouTube is its performativity because users publishing their videos on YouTube focus on their performativity. Otherwise, they will not attract many users and become virtually useless for other users of YouTube but the authors of those videos (Lombe & Ssewamala 39). Hence, the performativity is not only the distinct feature of YouTube but also an essential condition of success of videos published on YouTube, whereas the public grows too concerned with the performativity that often leads to the failure of the audience to notice really significant and important issues, while perfomrability become prior to the cultural and social value of videos and messages published on YouTube. In such a way, the performativity of YouTube has a dubious effect, since, on the one hand, YouTube performativity makes it attractive and powerful social media allowing sharing visual data by users worldwide, while, on the other hand, YouTube performativity has a de structive impact on the existing legal and socio-cultural or ethical norms because often data published on YouTube violate basic rights, such as privacy or copyright, and offend existing ethical norms.

At the same time, social media became generators of the mainstream culture and new trends. In this regard, it is worth mentioning the fact that the development of social media, like YouTube, opens new opportunities for the development of virtual social communities united by their common interests. Users spend more and more time online developing their virtual social relations online. Social media become an important part of their life and virtual communities created with the help of and within social media play an important part in the development of socio-cultural norms and standards that affect the development of basic ethical and cultural norms of people and influence their lifestyle substantially.

YouTube has become a highly influential media which is extremely popular among users worldwide. Today, YouTube has millions or even billions of users worldwide. This is one of the most popular social media along with FaceBook, Twitter and others. The popularity of YouTube is closely intertwined with the publishing opportunity offered by the social media because users can publish their videos both documentary and featured ones. In such a way, users get ample opportunities to share their videos instantly. At the same time, the distinct feature of YouTube is its perfomrability because it is the performativity of videos that attracts users and the more performable a video is the more users will watch it, the more popular it becomes.

Even though YouTube focuses on sharing videos mainly, the social media still opens wide opportunities for users to share their creative ideas and make them performable. Users may be driven by different concerns, while publishing their videos and sharing information with others. Some of them may be willing to publishing some interesting facts recorded by them in the real world, while others manifest their creativity with the help of YouTube.

YouTube allows watching diverse videos and channels which may vary in their content. However, the popularity of videos determines their availability to the audience that influences the perception of information by the audience. For instance, the video that has the highest number of views becomes more and more popular and becomes mainstream, even though in its essence the video may have little cultural value or poor messages (Warr 291). In fact, the point is to make videos performable. The overwhelming majority of users publishing their videos on YouTube are concerned with the popularity of their videos than their content. Such a competition encourages users to focus on performativity of their videos above all.

What makes YouTube really popular and mainstream social media is its performativity because the audience receive what it wants and expects from the media, the performance, the show and entertainment with the possibility of the further communication and even interaction with other users of YouTube. For instance, users publishing the video on YouTube may expect the positive feedback from other users. If they receive a negative feedback, they may become interested in creating a new video to match the public interests. In such a way, videos become more and more performable to gain the positive feedback from the part of other users watching them on YouTube.

However, often the quantity of views determines the popularity of videos in YouTube and users erroneously associate the quality of the video with the number of views. In other words, they may believe that if the video has a large number of views, than it is good and mainstream.

Furthermore, users can leave comments after the video that also contributes to the formation of specific ideas because users may conduct disputes as they leave their comments.

Furthermore, videos published on YouTube may encourage users to publish their video responses that contribute to the further attraction of the users’ attention to the issue that has become the subject of controversy or dispute between users.

The popularity of YouTube is, to a significant extent, determined by the interest of the audience in visual information. In fact, it is not the interest proper. To put it more precisely, users prefer YouTube because this social media provides them with visual messages which are preferable for the public than print messages for instance (Warr 290). As people perceive the information about the surrounding world with the help of vision, they naturally choose YouTube in place of other social media because they have an opportunity to receive visual information that facilitates their perception of messages conveyed via YouTube.

At the same time, it is necessary to take the commercial background and opportunities offered by YouTube to its users. For instance, users can benefit from the cooperation with advertisers but they need to make their videos and channels popular to attract more advertisers. In such a way, YouTube offers business opportunities for users that stimulates the development of diverse channels to meet current demands of the public or create new ones.

Why YouTube Is My Favourite Social Media Platform

Strangely, I was never a YouTube girly growing up. I didn’t watch the makeup tutorials, the fashion hauls or the weird challenge videos.

I’ve never watched a Zoella video, didn’t know who Jake and Logan Paul were until a few years ago and still don’t know what a muckbang is.

Anyone who was a famous YouTuber, I didn’t know who they were. I couldn’t wrap my head around sitting down to watch another ordinary person talk to the camera about what they got up to that day.

Why would I waste my time with that when I could be watching Netflix?

Oh how things have changed.

There’s something comforting about watching people do nothing

My favourite form of video to watch on YouTube is probably what I couldn’t wrap my head around years ago: ordinary vlogs. Watching people go about their lives doing basically nothing.

I watched Olivia Neill buy pasta jars for 30 minutes. I watch someone redecorate their bedroom for 20 minutes. And I watched someone wake up, go to Trader Joes, do a Trader Joes haul and then make dinner for 45 minutes.

But it’s strangely…comforting.

It feels like I’m catching up with a friend on what they’ve been up to recently and seeing how they spent their weekend. I feel somewhat of a connection to the creator by seeing inside their living space, being shown parts of their lives, their friends, their pets and hobbies.

It is strange but you start rooting for them, wishing them well in what they’re getting up to, seeing them secure brand deals on their videos and having a good time.

I use it as a form of manifestation

I won’t lie, 98% of the creators I watch are based in New York or America. I only follow two creators that are based in the UK and that’s Jack Edwards and Victoria Magrath.

I love watching people go about their ordinary lives in New York and seeing the food spots they go to, the bars they go to or just their mundane tasks like going to Trader Joes.

Sometimes I see it as a form of manifesting. Seeing what my life could look like on YouTube in the future if I ever (when I) make it back to living in New York.

To be honest, it’s probably my coping mechanism for when I’m not in New York, watching other people go about their lives in the city and living vicariously through them when I’m having my lunch or when I’m at the gym.

I feel closer to the creators I follow through YouTube

Creators seem to be more vulnerable on YouTube than they are on TikTok or Instagram. They’ll often say their YouTube viewers know the ‘real them’ as they see the good times, the bad and everything in between.

Through YouTube I’ll know more about what a creator is doing day to day, what they’re going through and exciting things they have coming up.

It helps working in my industry as I’ll feel like I know the influencers more than I can do than through Instagram or TikTok.

Although, it doesn’t help me that much since the YouTubers I watch are American, but it still helps.

There’s more of a community feel on YouTube

If you ever need to be reminded that there are nice people in the world, read YouTube comments on your favourite creator’s videos.

These people are invested heavily in the creator and always post kind words of inspiration and sympathy with the creator when they need it. Especially since these viewers are willing to sit and watch 30 minutes of your content, you know they’re engaged.

Compare that to a 10 second TikTok that gets posted out to anyone and everyone and you’ll open yourself to god-knows-what in the comments box.

The YouTube community is the best.

I like looking back on my life and sharing with others

For personal reasons, I love making YouTube videos because I can look back on my travels and watch them. You have no idea how many times I want to sit and watch my New York videos , but I restrain myself in case I end up booking another flight.

Related: Am I a Vlogger now?

Being able to sit down on my sofa and watch my Bali travels on the big screen is such a lovely thing to have, along with all of my other travel videos.

I don’t know what the future holds for me on YouTube besides travel content for the moment, but I’m hoping to delve out a little wider and create more lifestyle-type videos, but we’ll see what happens.

YouTube as My Favorite Media Platform

In the constantly changing reality of the modern world, numerous forms of media allow people to communicate and share all types of information. Mass media is changing all the time, and there are different ways to define its forms. They can be divided into traditional (television, radio, books, newspapers, etc.) and new (websites, podcasts, social networks, blogs, video, and music sharing platforms, etc.) forms of media (“What Are Types of Media?”). In my opinion, YouTube is currently one of the best media platforms. Even though the use of YouTube is often considered to have many negative effects, it is my favorite form of media because I have learned to use it as an educational tool.

Many people consider YouTube to be harmful, claiming that it is full of useless information, which poses a special danger to the minds of children and teenagers. It is believed that the way this platform works can make one spend too much time watching videos that they do not intend to watch but get distracted and eventually lose several hours doing it. Furthermore, studies have revealed the connection between the compulsive use of YouTube and mental health problems, such as depression and social anxiety (De Bérail et al.). Nevertheless, the question of whether YouTube should be seen as the ultimate evil might need further consideration.

On the one hand, the compulsive use of this platform does have the potential to reduce its users’ mental well-being and physical health. This is due to its addictive features: “the videos provide us with relevant information that stimulates a dopamine response” (“How YouTube is Addictive”). On the other hand, this is what all of the streaming platforms and social networks do. Although YouTube might currently be one of the most addictive Internet platforms, countless sources can be just as addictive if only one starts to use them excessively.

Therefore, I do not consider YouTube to be harmful or dangerous by itself; moreover, it is my favorite form of media. Firstly, it is a great learning tool for me because I am a visual learner and find it easier to watch a video on a topic than to read about it. I think that YouTube is the platform with the most interesting and original educational content that has ever been created. Courses on history, philosophy, and many other subjects are available to anyone, and that seems truly astonishing to me. Secondly, it has introduced me to so many creative people, which also helped develop my own creativity.

In spite of my fondness for this platform, I was not always able to only use its advantages. While I have admired them from the beginning, I also used to spend too much time watching videos that had no value to me. However, after losing those precious hours, I often got so frustrated that I finally decided to limit my time on YouTube and only watch videos on education, art, science, and everything that intellectually stimulates me.

Drawing on my personal experience, I came to the conclusion that YouTube is the best type of media to use both for educational and leisure purposes. Although some criticize it for being addictive and damaging, I believe that it is the way people use it that makes all the difference. It might be worth focusing on developing one’s inner discipline and self-control in order to use all the benefits of YouTube and other media.

People can now maintain intimate relationships with those they care about, even when physically separated.

Improved Communication Speed and Efficiency

Additionally, the proliferation of social media sites has accelerated and simplified communication. Thanks to instant messaging, users can have short, timely conversations rather than lengthy ones via email. Furthermore, social media facilitates group communication, such as with classmates or employees, by providing a unified forum for such activities.

Negative Effects:

Decreased Face-to-Face Communication

The decline in in-person interaction is one of social media's most pernicious consequences on interpersonal connections and dialogue. People's reliance on digital communication over in-person contact has increased along with the popularity of social media. Face-to-face interaction has suffered as a result, which has adverse effects on interpersonal relationships and the development of social skills.

Decreased Emotional Intimacy

Another adverse effect of social media on relationships and communication is decreased emotional intimacy. Digital communication lacks the nonverbal cues and facial expressions critical in building emotional connections with others. This can make it more difficult for people to develop close and meaningful relationships, leading to increased loneliness and isolation.

Increased Conflict and Miscommunication

Finally, social media can also lead to increased conflict and miscommunication. The anonymity and distance provided by digital communication can lead to misunderstandings and hurtful comments that might not have been made face-to-face. Additionally, social media can provide a platform for cyberbullying , which can have severe consequences for the victim's mental health and well-being.

Conclusion:

In conclusion, the impact of social media on relationships and communication is a complex issue with both positive and negative effects. While social media platforms offer many benefits, such as connecting people across distances and enabling faster and more accessible communication, they also have a dark side that can negatively affect relationships and communication. It is up to individuals to use social media responsibly and to prioritize in-person communication in their relationships and interactions with others.

The Role of Social Media in the Spread of Misinformation and Fake News

Social media has revolutionized the way information is shared and disseminated. However, the ease and speed at which data can be spread on social media also make it a powerful tool for spreading misinformation and fake news. Misinformation and fake news can seriously affect public opinion, influence political decisions, and even cause harm to individuals and communities.

The Pervasiveness of Misinformation and Fake News on Social Media

Misinformation and fake news are prevalent on social media platforms, where they can spread quickly and reach a large audience. This is partly due to the way social media algorithms work, which prioritizes content likely to generate engagement, such as sensational or controversial stories. As a result, false information can spread rapidly and be widely shared before it is fact-checked or debunked.

The Influence of Social Media on Public Opinion

Social media can significantly impact public opinion, as people are likelier to believe the information they see shared by their friends and followers. This can lead to a self-reinforcing cycle, where misinformation and fake news are spread and reinforced, even in the face of evidence to the contrary.

The Challenge of Correcting Misinformation and Fake News

Correcting misinformation and fake news on social media can be a challenging task. This is partly due to the speed at which false information can spread and the difficulty of reaching the same audience exposed to the wrong information in the first place. Additionally, some individuals may be resistant to accepting correction, primarily if the incorrect information supports their beliefs or biases.

In conclusion, the function of social media in disseminating misinformation and fake news is complex and urgent. While social media has revolutionized the sharing of information, it has also made it simpler for false information to propagate and be widely believed. Individuals must be accountable for the information they share and consume, and social media firms must take measures to prevent the spread of disinformation and fake news on their platforms.

The Effects of Social Media on Mental Health and Well-Being

Social media has become an integral part of modern life, with billions of people around the world using platforms like Facebook, Instagram, and Twitter to stay connected with others and access information. However, while social media has many benefits, it can also negatively affect mental health and well-being.

Comparison and Low Self-Esteem

One of the key ways that social media can affect mental health is by promoting feelings of comparison and low self-esteem. People often present a curated version of their lives on social media, highlighting their successes and hiding their struggles. This can lead others to compare themselves unfavorably, leading to feelings of inadequacy and low self-esteem.

Cyberbullying and Online Harassment

Another way that social media can negatively impact mental health is through cyberbullying and online harassment. Social media provides a platform for anonymous individuals to harass and abuse others, leading to feelings of anxiety, fear, and depression.

Social Isolation

Despite its name, social media can also contribute to feelings of isolation. At the same time, people may have many online friends but need more meaningful in-person connections and support. This can lead to feelings of loneliness and depression.

Addiction and Overuse

Finally, social media can be addictive, leading to overuse and negatively impacting mental health and well-being. People may spend hours each day scrolling through their feeds, neglecting other important areas of their lives, such as work, family, and self-care.

In sum, social media has positive and negative consequences on one's psychological and emotional well-being. Realizing this, and taking measures like reducing one's social media use, reaching out to loved ones for help, and prioritizing one's well-being, are crucial. In addition, it's vital that social media giants take ownership of their platforms and actively encourage excellent mental health and well-being.

The Use of Social Media in Political Activism and Social Movements

Social media has recently become increasingly crucial in political action and social movements. Platforms such as Twitter, Facebook, and Instagram have given people new ways to express themselves, organize protests, and raise awareness about social and political issues.

Raising Awareness and Mobilizing Action

One of the most important uses of social media in political activity and social movements has been to raise awareness about important issues and mobilize action. Hashtags such as #MeToo and #BlackLivesMatter, for example, have brought attention to sexual harassment and racial injustice, respectively. Similarly, social media has been used to organize protests and other political actions, allowing people to band together and express themselves on a bigger scale.

Connecting with like-minded individuals

A second method in that social media has been utilized in political activity and social movements is to unite like-minded individuals. Through social media, individuals can join online groups, share knowledge and resources, and work with others to accomplish shared objectives. This has been especially significant for geographically scattered individuals or those without access to traditional means of political organizing.

Challenges and Limitations

As a vehicle for political action and social movements, social media has faced many obstacles and restrictions despite its many advantages. For instance, the propagation of misinformation and fake news on social media can impede attempts to disseminate accurate and reliable information. In addition, social media corporations have been condemned for censorship and insufficient protection of user rights.

In conclusion, social media has emerged as a potent instrument for political activism and social movements, giving voice to previously unheard communities and galvanizing support for change. Social media presents many opportunities for communication and collaboration. Still, users and institutions must be conscious of the risks and limitations of these tools to promote their responsible and productive usage.

The Potential Privacy Concerns Raised by Social Media Use and Data Collection Practices

With billions of users each day on sites like Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram, social media has ingrained itself into every aspect of our lives. While these platforms offer a straightforward method to communicate with others and exchange information, they also raise significant concerns over data collecting and privacy. This article will examine the possible privacy issues posed by social media use and data-gathering techniques.

Data Collection and Sharing

The gathering and sharing of personal data are significant privacy issues brought up by social media use. Social networking sites gather user data, including details about their relationships, hobbies, and routines. This information is made available to third-party businesses for various uses, such as marketing and advertising. This can lead to serious concerns about who has access to and uses our personal information.

Lack of Control Over Personal Information

The absence of user control over personal information is a significant privacy issue brought up by social media usage. Social media makes it challenging to limit who has access to and how data is utilized once it has been posted. Sensitive information may end up being extensively disseminated and may be used maliciously as a result.

Personalized Marketing

Social media companies utilize the information they gather about users to target them with adverts relevant to their interests and usage patterns. Although this could be useful, it might also cause consumers to worry about their privacy since they might feel that their personal information is being used without their permission. Furthermore, there are issues with the integrity of the data being used to target users and the possibility of prejudice based on individual traits.

Government Surveillance

Using social media might spark worries about government surveillance. There are significant concerns regarding privacy and free expression when governments in some nations utilize social media platforms to follow and monitor residents.

In conclusion, social media use raises significant concerns regarding data collecting and privacy. While these platforms make it easy to interact with people and exchange information, they also gather a lot of personal information, which raises questions about who may access it and how it will be used. Users should be aware of these privacy issues and take precautions to safeguard their personal information, such as exercising caution when choosing what details to disclose on social media and keeping their information sharing with other firms to a minimum.

The Ethical and Privacy Concerns Surrounding Social Media Use And Data Collection

Our use of social media to communicate with loved ones, acquire information, and even conduct business has become a crucial part of our everyday lives. The extensive use of social media does, however, raise some ethical and privacy issues that must be resolved. The influence of social media use and data collecting on user rights, the accountability of social media businesses, and the need for improved regulation are all topics that will be covered in this article.

Effect on Individual Privacy:

Social networking sites gather tons of personal data from their users, including delicate information like search history, location data, and even health data. Each user's detailed profile may be created with this data and sold to advertising or used for other reasons. Concerns regarding the privacy of personal information might arise because social media businesses can use this data to target users with customized adverts.

Additionally, individuals might need to know how much their personal information is being gathered and exploited. Data breaches or the unauthorized sharing of personal information with other parties may result in instances where sensitive information is exposed. Users should be aware of the privacy rules of social media firms and take precautions to secure their data.

Responsibility of Social Media Companies:

Social media firms should ensure that they responsibly and ethically gather and use user information. This entails establishing strong security measures to safeguard sensitive information and ensuring users are informed of what information is being collected and how it is used.

Many social media businesses, nevertheless, have come under fire for not upholding these obligations. For instance, the Cambridge Analytica incident highlighted how Facebook users' personal information was exploited for political objectives without their knowledge. This demonstrates the necessity of social media corporations being held responsible for their deeds and ensuring that they are safeguarding the security and privacy of their users.

Better Regulation Is Needed

There is a need for tighter regulation in this field, given the effect, social media has on individual privacy as well as the obligations of social media firms. The creation of laws and regulations that ensure social media companies are gathering and using user information ethically and responsibly, as well as making sure users are aware of their rights and have the ability to control the information that is being collected about them, are all part of this.

Additionally, legislation should ensure that social media businesses are held responsible for their behavior, for example, by levying fines for data breaches or the unauthorized use of personal data. This will provide social media businesses with a significant incentive to prioritize their users' privacy and security and ensure they are upholding their obligations.

In conclusion, social media has fundamentally changed how we engage and communicate with one another, but this increased convenience also raises several ethical and privacy issues. Essential concerns that need to be addressed include the effect of social media on individual privacy, the accountability of social media businesses, and the requirement for greater regulation to safeguard user rights. We can make everyone's online experience safer and more secure by looking more closely at these issues.

Why Write a Social Media Essay

In a world buzzing with hashtags, filters, and the constant hum of notifications, the idea of sitting down to craft an essay about social media might seem as out of place as a cassette tape in a streaming era. Yet, there's something oddly therapeutic, almost rebellious, about pausing in the midst of 280-character wisdom to delve deeper into the why behind our digital existence.

So, what is social media essay, and what's the purpose of writing it? Well, it's more than just an exercise in intellectual curiosity. It's a personal journey, a reflective pause in the ceaseless scroll. While writing the essay, we gain the power to articulate the intangible, to breathe life into the pixels that dance across our screens. It's an opportunity to make sense of the chaos, to find meaning in the memes, and perhaps, in the process, to uncover a bit more about ourselves in this digital wilderness.

Let's face it - our online lives are a fast-paced carousel of memes, viral challenges, and carefully curated selfies. So, why bother wrestling with words and paragraphs in a world where brevity is king? The answer lies in the art of unraveling the digital tapestry that envelops us.

There's a magic in articulating the dance between the profound and the mundane that occurs within the confines of our screens. An essay becomes a lens, focusing our attention on the subtleties of social media dynamics – the inside jokes that become global phenomena, the ripple effect of a well-timed retweet, and the silent conversations unfolding in the comment sections.

  • Embrace Your Authentic Voice: Just like your favorite Instagram filter can't hide the real you, your essay should reflect your genuine thoughts and feelings. Don't be afraid to let your unique voice shine through – whether it's witty, contemplative, or a delightful blend of both.
  • Dive into the Details: Social media isn't just about the grand gestures; it's the small, often unnoticed details that weave the most compelling narratives. Explore the minutiae of your online experiences – the peculiar hashtags, the quirky bios, and the unexpected connections that leave a lasting imprint.
  • Craft Your Hashtag Haiku: Much like poetry, brevity can be your ally in social media essays. Think of hashtags as haikus – succinct, impactful, and capable of conveying a universe of meaning in just a few characters. Choose them wisely.

Form an Outline

Now that we've acknowledged the importance of structure in your essay, the next step is to build a solid roadmap. Think of it like planning a road trip; you wouldn't hit the highway without a map or GPS, right? Similarly, creating an outline for your essay gives you a clear direction and ensures your thoughts flow smoothly.

So, whether you decide to order an essay online or tackle it yourself, here's a simple way to go about it:

Introduction (Where You Start):

  • Briefly introduce the topic.
  • State your social media essay thesis or main idea.
  • Example: 'Let's begin by introducing the impact of social media on modern communication, focusing on its role in shaping opinions and fostering connections.'

Body Paragraphs (The Journey):

  • Each paragraph should cover a specific social media essay argument and point.
  • Use examples or evidence to support your ideas.
  • Example: 'The first aspect we'll explore is how social media amplifies voices. For instance, hashtags like #ClimateAction mobilize a global audience around environmental issues.'

Transitions (Smooth Turns):

  • Guide your readers from one point to the next.
  • Ensure a logical flow between paragraphs.
  • Example: 'Having discussed the amplification of voices, let's now shift our focus to the influence of social media in spreading information.'

Counter Arguments (Addressing Detours):

  • Acknowledge different perspectives.
  • Counter Arguments with evidence or reasoning.
  • Example: 'While social media can be a powerful tool for connectivity, critics argue that it also contributes to the spread of misinformation. Let's explore this counterargument and analyze its validity.'

Conclusion (The Destination):

  • Summarize your main points.
  • Restate your thesis and leave a lasting impression.
  • Example: 'In conclusion, social media serves as both a bridge and a battleground of ideas. Understanding its nuances is crucial in navigating this digital landscape.'

Creating an outline for your essay not only streamlines the writing process but also ensures your readers embark on a clear and organized journey through your insights on social media. If you're exploring more options, you might even want to buy thesis for more convenience.

Make a Social Media Essay Introduction

Begin your introduction by presenting a concise overview of the key theme or topic you're addressing. Clearly state the main purpose or argument of your essay, giving readers a roadmap for what to expect. Integrate social media essay hooks like a relevant statistic, quote, or provocative question to capture attention.

For instance, if your essay is about the impact of social media on personal relationships, you might start by mentioning a statistic on the percentage of couples who met online.

Social Media Essay Body Paragraph

Structure each social media essay body paragraph around a specific aspect of your chosen topic. Start with a clear topic sentence that encapsulates the main idea of the paragraph. Provide concrete examples, data, or case studies to support your points and strengthen your argument. Maintain a logical flow between paragraphs by using effective transitions.

If your essay focuses on the positive effects of social media on business marketing, dedicate a paragraph to showcasing successful campaigns and how they leveraged different platforms.

Social Media Essay Conclusion

In your conclusion, succinctly recap the main points discussed in the body paragraphs. Reinforce your thesis statement and emphasize its broader implications. Rather than introducing new information, use the conclusion to leave a lasting impression on your readers. Consider prompting further thought or suggesting practical applications of your findings.

For instance, if your essay examined the impact of social media on political discourse, conclude by encouraging readers to critically evaluate the information they encounter online and actively engage in constructive conversations.

Proofread and Revise

In the process of writing social media essay, proofreading and revising are indispensable steps that can significantly enhance the overall quality of your work. Begin by meticulously checking for grammatical errors, ensuring that your sentences are clear and concise. Pay attention to the flow of your ideas, confirming that each paragraph seamlessly transitions into the next.

During the proofreading phase, keep an eye out for any inconsistencies in tone or style. This is an opportunity to refine your language and ensure that it aligns with the intended voice of your essay. Look for repetitive phrases or unnecessary words that might detract from the clarity of your message.

As you revise, consider the effectiveness of your hook. Does it still resonate as strongly as you intended? Can it be tweaked to better captivate your audience? A compelling hook sets the tone for your entire essay, so invest time in perfecting this crucial element.

Furthermore, don't hesitate to seek feedback from peers or mentors. Another perspective can provide valuable insights into areas that may need improvement. Fresh eyes often catch nuances that the writer might overlook. Alternatively, you might also explore the option to buy coursework for additional support.

Why Is Youtube Better Than Other Social Media Platforms?

' src=

Since the late 1990s, when social media platforms first became popular, several attempts and triumphs in this technology field have been made. Despite various excellent instances we have seen over the years, one channel has stuck out effectively. A booming social media platform has a thriving ecosystem where marketers, content providers, and users all profit from using the platform. Youtube is the multiple influential social media platform channel by this definition. Most YouTubers are curious to know how to get more views on youtube ?

After Google, it is the second most prevalent search engine. More than 100 hours of videos are posted and shared every minute on this site. According to a Pew Research Centre report, the percentage of American people who use Youtube on their phones has risen to 73 percent, surpassing Facebook. This platform has evolved into one of the most effective means of connecting with a broad audience, whether viewing shows or disseminating information.

The following are reasons why Youtube is the most popular social media platform:

1.  It Boosts Your SERPs (Search Engine Optimization)

In just a few years, video has risen to become one of the most popular multimedia mediums. Videos now account for almost 74 percent of all web traffic. Videos are watched and often shared on social media platforms. Because search engines such as Google recommend videos, sharing a video on Youtube with strong descriptions, titles, and tags may help you improve your search engine rating. Youtube SEO may help a firm succeed in its marketing efforts because it is the second largest search engine.

People go to Youtube for two reasons: first, to be amused, and second, to learn something from viewing videos. Animal videos are viral on this video platform, but aside from these fun films, Youtube also has a lot of room for company promotion. With over a billion viewers, Youtube is an excellent medium for introducing people to a business, raising awareness, and growing a potential client base. Furthermore, Youtube SEO plays a significant and direct part in marketing; for example, companies may use paid Youtube video advertising to increase traffic to their channels.

2. The Activates Talent From Underrepresented Groups

Most people find it difficult to believe that Youtube has a more significant proportion of users than Facebook. In contrast to Youtube, Facebook does not pay its influencers and does not offer any products for users to create. It is just a compilation of a large amount of third-party online content.

Youtube is home to aspiring video creators and provides them with a place to promote their work. Not everyone is lucky enough to have business contacts, nor does everyone come from a family of well-connected people.

Youtube gives a forum for such people to showcase their work and ability to the rest of the world. It’s comparable to how Instagram is a haven for photographers who can’t afford pricey equipment and how Medium is heaven for writers looking for a book contract. It also provides the potential for small companies, such as the transcription of videos, which many individuals do; this is an excellent platform. If you don’t understand how to transcribe YouTube videos, you can use various software.

3. It Broadens The Reach Of Your Message

Youtube is one of the most influential venues for businesses to gain client attention. Several advantages may be obtained by Youtube advertising, including personalization, measurability, targeting, cost, and, most importantly, reach. Every month, over 2 billion account holders use Youtube; in addition, many unregistered users contribute to the platform’s daily watch of five billion videos. Each of these films serves as a vehicle for displaying a company’s advertisement to potential customers.

You may also target videos based on keywords, subjects, and categories on Youtube. It enhances the likelihood that your ad will be interesting or relevant to the viewer. It also has the ability of placement targeting, which allows a company to specify which Youtube sites their adverts should show on. Such targeting options make it simple to reach out to your target audience and assist you in having your ad seen the way you want it to be seen. Compared to SearchAds, Youtube also allows for some customization, allowing companies to customize their adverts.

4. It Helps To Form A Community

Youtube has been instrumental in establishing a community on the social media site. The makers on Youtube, formally known as Youtube creators, are part of something far more than a video streaming network. Youtube looks after these creators, and they may relax and socialize with other creators, forming a community. It is accomplished by sharing the labor of Youtube and working as a team to achieve excellent results. It’s a platform with millions of users who watch different producers’ videos, follow them obsessively, buy their stuff, and so on.

5. Recognition And Gamification

Another remarkable component of this platform is that it rewards and recognizes its producers for their work. Youtube gives its creators three rewards when they hit certain milestones: a Silver Play Button when they reach 100,000 subscribers, a Gold Play Button when they reach 1 million subscribers, and a Diamond Play Button when they get 10 million subscribers. Working on a site like Youtube may be enjoyable, but being compensated for your efforts and hard work will increase brand loyalty and usage.

These are just a few of the numerous reasons why Youtube is the most popular social media network. And this will only get larger and better in the future years. Visit the website of Vrocket for additional information.

My Experience with the Social Media - Personal Essay Sample

The advent of technology has brought with it numerous changes in the society. One of the most affected areas is communication. Technology has replaced the traditional ways of relaying messages over long distances. Emails, tweets, and the Facebook Posts have gained ground at the expense of letters, telegrams, and the faxes. These social changes have transformed the contemporary societies in several ways. For instance, meeting friends is very simple, since one has to send a friend request to a total stranger and the two become friends in a matter of minutes. Businesses, politics, organizations, civil societies and many other associations have been enhanced by the social media. In other words, the social media is a powerful tool for communication and social advancement. On the flipside, online communities are a dangerous place. Cyber-bullying, fraudulent dealings, blackmail, and the spread of propaganda have been accentuated by the online media. Just like anybody else who is enthusiastic about the Internet, I have had both awful and awesome experiences with the social media. However, I do not wish to discourage people to use it, but I will recommended, based on my past experiences, the ideal way of using the internet in the most productive manner possible.

My first encounter with social media came when I opened a Facebook account. I was 16 years then when I got my first smartphone. It wasnt new, but it served all the purposes that I imagined a smart phone would do. Most of my friends were already on Facebook but I shied off from opening an account due to the numerous bad reports I had heard about cyber bullying. On this particular day, I decided that I was ready to come face to face with the online world, something that my friends praised often. With the help of one of my friends, I logged into the Facebook website and followed all the prompts necessary to open an account. In a matter of minutes, I was one among billions of Facebook users. One of the first things that Facebook required me to do was to add a profile picture. I did not have a picture that would fit an online display at the moment, so I took one instantly and uploaded it as my profile picture. I also downloaded a picture of my favorite sport car from the Internet and used it as my cover photo. I had been told that it was not safe to put my name as the username, so I quickly designed a pet name and added it instead.

After one week, I had received a hundred friend requests from my classmates and family members. I needed no classes on accepting the friends, so I confirmed all of them immediately. I was delighted to see that I made 100 virtual friends in less than a month, something that could take me a life time to do. Additionally, the Facebook operators gave suggested to me a number of groups that they thought I was interested in. What struck me is how they knew that I was interested in their offers, because surprisingly, all the suggestions looked appealing to me. Within one more week, I was a member of more than five groups, one of them being my former schools blog. Since then, I came to learn of other social media platform that did more or less the same as what Facebook does. All the online platforms virtually connect thousands of people with a common interest: to share with the world. I thus joined many other social media and became a world citizen, connected to billions of Internet users remotely.

Since I established my online presence, I have experienced both the good and bad sides of the Internet. For example, I have made purchases of goods online at a price that is far much below that in the grocery store. I have also kept track of all my former classmates by looking at their online posts. I once joined an online course which I did not complete. The reason being my failure to finish this course was time insufficiency. Online courses, as I came to learn call for ones patience and persistence. For an online student to graduate in a course, they must complete all the tutorials and assignments. Since these learning materials are offered over the internet, and in bits, it implies that a learner must spend a lot of time attending to the course. Due to my commitment to other activities, I failed to give my online course all the time it needed. One important thing I have learned with the Internet is that it promotes globalization. According to Ritzer (18), new trends are emerging everywhere as people try out new things they have learned through the internet and other sources. I am this not surprised that fashion, customs, music, and culture have spread widely through the internet. From my experience, I have realized that everybody is embracing the social media for all manner of reasons, and users should apply this tool prudently to avoid or minimizes its potential damages.

Why and How to Use YouTube Video Essays in Your Classroom

February 09, 2018, common sense media, by educator innovator.

In a world of nearly ubiquitous YouTube viewership, watching and making video essays in the classroom is not only a great platform for close reading and digital composition, but a media literacy imperative, argues Tanner Higgin from Common Sense Education .

Like many of you, I’ve been thinking a lot lately about how we can better prepare students to be thoughtful, responsible, and critical consumers and creators. While I don’t have all the answers, I’ve come to one conclusion: Media-literacy education must deal with YouTube. Ninety-one percent of teens use YouTube . That’s 30 percent more than use Snapchat (61 percent), the next closest social media competitor, and even more than use tech we think of as ubiquitous, like Gmail (79 percent).

What’s more, YouTube is a unique beast and can’t just be tacked on. It has its own celebrities, culture, norms, and memes and has even given rise to the dreaded “ YouTube voice .” But what I find particularly fascinating is that YouTube has its own genres and types of videos. One of these—the video essay—is something I think can be a great tool for media-literacy education. Here’s why…

What Are YouTube Video Essays?

YouTube video essays are long-form (relative to many other internet videos) critical videos that make arguments about media and culture. They’re usually meticulously narrated and edited, juxtaposing video footage, images, audio, and text to make an argument much like a writer would do in a traditional essay. As former YouTube talent scout Jeremy Kaye puts it , video essays “take a structured, in-depth, analytical, and sometimes persuasive approach, as opposed to the quick ‘explainer’ video style.”

Why Are They Great for Learning?

It’s easy to dismiss a lot of what circulates on YouTube as frivolous, silly, or even obnoxious, but video essays are the opposite. They demand students’ attention but not through cartoonish gesturing, ultra-fast editing, and shock value (which even some of the more popular educational YouTubers fall prey to)—there’s room to breathe in these essays. To capture attention, video essays use a time-tested trick: being flat-out interesting. They present compelling questions or topics and then dig into them using media as evidence and explication. This makes them a great match for lessons on persuasive and argumentative writing.

But what I really love most about video essays is that they have something at stake; they ground their arguments in important cultural or political topics, exposing the ways media represents gender or race, for instance, or how media evolves over time and interacts with the world at large. Most importantly, video essays model for students how YouTube can be a platform for critical communication.

How Can They Be Used in Classrooms?

First, a caveat: Most of the channels below offer content that’ll work best in an upper-middle or high school classroom. Some videos can also be explicit, so you’ll want to do some browsing.

  • Conversation starter or lesson hook : Many of these videos serve as great two- to 10-minute introductions to topics relevant to classrooms across the curriculum.
  • Active viewing opportunity : Since video essays present often complex arguments, invite students to watch and rewatch videos and outline their theses, key points, and conclusions.
  • Research project : Have students find more examples that support, or argue against, a video’s argument. Students could also write a response to a video essay.
  • Copyright lesson : Video essays are a great example of fair use. Show students that by adding their own commentary, they can use copyrighted material responsibly.

Channels and Videos to Check Out

  • Nerdwriter — This is an eclectic channel that’s hard to pin down. Basically, the video topics focus on whatever intrigues the channel’s creator, Evan Puschak. There’s everything from an analysis of painting to MLK’s “ I Have a Dream ” speech to film to the history of the fidget spinner .
  • Vox — Vox runs the gamut of issues in politics, culture, and pop culture. Their explainer-style videos can serve as conversation starters, and since they publish multiple videos a week, there’s no shortage of choices. Also, make sure to check out their playlists offering essays on everything from music to climate change .
  • Noisy Images — This channel does a masterful job of uncovering the layered meaning—social, political, and cultural—in hip-hop and other music. While most of these videos are mature and only suitable in very particular high school contexts, there’s brilliant work on everything from the poetic rhythms of the hip-hop group Migos to Kanye West’s stagecraft to music video minimalism . Any one of these videos could inspire a great lesson or unit.
  • Lindsay Ellis — Video essays are just one thing Lindsay does on her channel, and she’s really good at them. Her videos often deal with heady topics like “ the other ,” but she boils them down in accessible ways. She also isn’t afraid to throw in a few jokes to keep things interesting.
  • Genius — There’s tons here focused on music, with a specific emphasis on hip-hop lyrics. One of my favorite series is called Deconstructed . While Deconstructed videos aren’t typical video essays, they present color-coded breakdowns of the rhyme schemes in hip-hop tracks. Students could apply this technique to their favorite songs or poems.
  • Every Frame A Painting — This now-defunct channel has 30 videos with some of the best film analysis on YouTube. If you’re looking to help students analyze the language of film, this is the channel to check out. One of my personal favorites focuses on the work of a film editor .
  • Kaptain Kristian — Kristian focuses a lot on cartoons and comics, which is a nice entry point for younger kids. Each of his videos touches on big ideas in storytelling. For instance, his examination of Pixar movies delves into their rich themes that break the often rote themes of other animated movies. This video would pair well with creative writing lessons or literary analysis.
  • CGP Grey — One of the more long-running essayists on YouTube, CGP Grey has a fast-talking style with a lot of animation but does a good job of answering head-scratching questions like, “ What if the electoral college is tied? ” or explaining complex issues like copyright in a digestible way .
  • Lessons from the Screenplay — While this channel focuses on how screenwriting underpins film, the lessons offered in each of this channel’s video essays are broadly applicable to the craft of writing in general.
  • Kogonada — I saved this one for last because it’s the least traditional. Kogonada is a former academic turned filmmaker who gained popularity through his Vimeo video essays that, for the most part, elegantly edit together film clips without any narration. These videos are great if you’re teaching a video- and film-editing class or film appreciation/criticism. Creating a narration-less video would be an excellent final project for students.

Describe Your Favourite Social Media Site.

Describe your favourite social media site.

  • What is your favourite social media site?
  • What do you use it for?
  • How long have you been using the social media site?

Social media has become the most used item on the internet nowadays especially for sending information to a large group of people at a particular time and also building relationships with friends and families who are not close enough to where you are and this has been the most important thing for me to indulge in the usage of this media. But in all, my favourite social media site has always been twitter. This is because most of the big men in the world own an account on this site and this gives me the opportunity to see what is really going on in their lives on a daily basis and it also gives me the opportunity to follow my favourite football team s and the latest information given accordingly. I have been using social media for over ten years now and I think it is a very positive introduction to our system and is helping in so many ways too.

There are a number of media sites available in the world. But out of these, Amazon is my favourite site which I mostly use for purchasing different new things. According to my, this site is very affordable as compared to other sites and there always a number of new varieties are available which are good in quality. This site is not time-consuming. For instance, If I order anything on the Amazon site, then our product comes to my home within two days, but other sites take a minimum of seven days to transfer the product. I have been using it for the last five years, and I do not acquire any problem from that product which I buy from this site. I always suggest to everyone to use the Amazon media site, which is a good and crimeless site.

Answer 1:- Oh no, it has always been so easy accessing an account for this site and for me I did not request any hand from someone else before creating an account on there.

Answer 2:- I have a number of choices. However, I can help those people who suffer from cyberbullying. Firstly, I can spread more knowledge about different sites through organising campaigns. Secondly, I can tell to people whether this site is best for you or not.

Question 11:- Which social media sites should you avoid?

Answer 1:- I really hate it when I see people doing online dating and using social media sites that promotes pornographic contents and these are the particular sites that I try to avoid all the time.

Answer 2:- according to me, every site has its own merits. It depends upon people preferences, but according to my opinion, the zoomy site is very dangerous for us because this site is completely fake and organised by the crime community.

Why Instagram Is My Favorite Social Media Platform

Amanda Abella

Although Instagram has been around for some time, it’s really been buzzing lately. It seems as if every internet marketer is teaching people how to use the social media platform for business. I, for one, am all for it. After many years of using different social media platforms for business, I can confidently say Instagram is my favorite.

Of course, Instagram is my favorite for now. I am very much aware that Facebook owns it. I am also aware that they change algorithms. This is why I advise coaching clients and students to always use social media to drive traffic or build their email list.

That being said, here are the many reasons why Instagram is my favorite social media platform.

It’s a lot of fun

First and foremost, I think Instagram is a lot of fun. I personally like to use my creativity in multiple ways, and Instagram forces me to do that. For example, I write for a living so sometimes I get bored with it. On Instagram, I’m forced to learn other creative skills like photography.

It’s also a lot of fun to take photos for Instagram. A friend and I recently ran around the local arts district taking photos we now use for Instagram marketing. It was a really fun day and now I have photos for at least a month’s worth of marketing.

Instagram stories are hot

I love getting a peek into people’s lives. I also love giving my own followers a peek into my life. In the current world of online marketing, this sort of transparency helps build trust with your market.

Additionally, I’m currently getting hundreds of views on my Instagram stories per day. This means I’d be stupid not to use it to drive traffic or build my email list. Since I have over 10,000 followers on Instagram, I also have the “Swipe Up” option enabled on my Instagram stories. This allows viewers to swipe up on their phones and be directed to a webpage of my choosing.

For example, I’m currently using daily Instagram stories to promote a giveaway I’m doing on my blog. This drives traffic and builds my email list.

I’m doing business via DMs

I don’t know why, but lately, people are just sending me DMs on Instagram rather than emailing me. I literally landed a monthly radio segment on a massive media network via my Instagram DMs.  Since there are so many forms of business communication these days that it would only make sense that people send direct messages.

Instagram followers take action when directed to

I can directly link money that I’ve made to Instagram. Many of the students for my six-week group coaching program initially found me on Instagram. I now have enough data to show that Instagram is the starting point for many of my clients.

Since I normally direct them to take action by joining an email list, my list has grown significantly without me having to spend money. I also have people tagging me in posts and sending even more followers my way. And, as I already mentioned, I’m getting a lot of traction on my Instagram stories.

Final Thoughts

Instagram is hands down my favorite social media tool ever. It allows me to have fun while still building my business over time. Best of all, I can do it without having to spend money.

illustration of featuring the different was we watch streaming content

As coronavirus cloistered the world, the genre of video essays continued to augment in popularity on Youtube. Despite the homogeny of the creator space being apparent from a cursory glance, 2021 saw POC video essayists gaining momentum on the platform. From behemoths like D’Angelo Wallace to humble creators like myself, there is a gradient of experiences that are finally being represented thanks to YouTube’s algorithm “apparently” being an equalizer. That being said, this article hopes to shed light on some of gems you may have missed.

Beyond the players, the format of video essays has also evolved. Gone are the days when a midwestern man could aggregate thousands of views on a video about why water is wet. (OK, jk, that still happens.) But most of today’s video essays now amalgamate several genres of YouTube videos. Whether it’s the commentary crossovers à la Tara Mooknee , or the stand-up comedy stylings of Chill Goblin , there is a variety of variations to find. Here are a few that surprised us in the last year. —Ransford James, aka Foreign

[ Ed. note: This list is ordered chronologically rather than ranked by preference, meaning everything is worth checking out. And if you need more to watch, check out last year’s list .]

“Your Island is a Commune pt. 1,” Nowhere Grotesk

I first discovered this touching series on Animal Crossing: New Horizons via the social posts on F. D. Signifier’s YouTube channel — more on him later, but credit where credit’s due. Nowhere Grotesk’s bio on social media reads, “We’re two visual artists that create and examine art through a utopian leftist lens,” and that feeling permeates this series.

Discussing Animal Crossing: New Horizons through the lens of communal living and pastoral nostalgia, Nowhere Grotesk pushes back on the easy joke that Tom Nook is a greedy capitalist. Instead, this series shows how Animal Crossing: New Horizons conveys the concept of community as directly in conflict with urbanization and capitalism, thriving only when everyone’s needs are met without the turmoil of work. Even the addition of the Happy Home Paradise DLC , which gives players the option to work for additional outcomes, doesn’t nullify the anticapitalist argument here; working is a choice you can but don’t have to make. The island even meets more of the players’ needs by providing free healthcare. Animal Crossing isn’t the apolitical fluff many seem to think; instead, it’s a lovely, immersive argument for anarcho-communism, mutual aid, and rooting our politics in community. —Wil Williams

“The Market of Humiliating Black Women,” Tee Noir

This offering is far from obscure, but by the off chance that Tee Noir has evaded your eyes and eluded your ears, consider my favorite video from her so far: “ The Market of Humiliating Black Women .” Without spoiling this masterpiece, Tee breaks down what is such an innocuous experience that not many people even notice: How quotidian Black women’s pain is in popular media. From high-budget Tyler Perry movies to grainy WorldstarHipHop videos, the parodying of pain that Black women face on the daily is rewarded with thousands of millions of views and thousands of shares.

This is an experience that is far from second-hand with regard to Tee Noir, as she faces scrutiny that men don’t, simply by virtue of being a Black woman on this platform — let alone her queerness. —RJ

“The Day Rue ‘Became’ Black,” Yhara Zayd

After hitting shelves in 2008, Suzanne Collins’ The Hunger Games was praised for the way it conveyed real-life modern class struggles in a strange, borderline fantastical world. The Hunger Games was clear about what it was saying and referencing, but apparently, some readers didn’t get the memo — or perhaps they refused to.

In this video, Zayd pulls on the Hunger Games fandom’s history to dissect what made some readers so shocked when Amandla Stenberg, a young Black actress, was cast as Rue, a young girl who is ... canonically Black. This isn’t just about people reading a book wrong, though; it’s about why audiences felt less protective of Rue the moment she “became” Black “in casting.” It’s also about why most of those comments have since been scrubbed from the internet.

Yhara Zayd’s work has been featured on all of my video essay lists , and for good reason. Her sharp, concise, passionate analysis is scored by a low-key (but not necessarily relaxed) aesthetic and narration style. Her occasional breaks to make a joke or loosen up her script emphasize what’s so important about the topic at hand: the humanity. —WW

“Infantilization and the Body Hair Debate,” Shanspeare

Unironic ASMR, charismatic candor, and witty humor are but a few of Shanspeare’s calling cards. Despite the myriad of channels dedicated to analyzing pop culture, none do it quite like Shanspeare. “ Infantilization and the Body Hair Debate ” is one of the most eye-opening videos that I have encountered, and it has provoked me — a cishet Afro-Caribbean man — into thoroughly addressing my own contributions to the subject matter. This deep dive into how the world incentivizes childlike behavior from women is as unnerving as it is necessary to watch. From the way I speak to women, to my subconscious preference of nicely shaven legs, Shanspeare details how all of that is essentially the product of a purposeful inculcation that was underway far before I was even a thought. I cannot emphasize to you enough that you should watch this masterpiece and all of her other ones as well. —RJ

“Bo Burnham vs. Jeff Bezos,” CJ the X

Thanks to my specific symptoms of ADHD, it can be really hard for me to devote time to watch video essays that are over an hour long, and even harder for me to really fall in love with them. I hope this will help convey the gravity with which I am saying that I watched this two-and-a-half-hour video more times than any other video on YouTube this year. What starts as an analysis of Bo Burnham’s Inside slowly morphs into something else, then something else, then something else . This video transitions so gracefully between discussions of posthumanism, the internet, online fame, and what makes something funny, all while being punctuated with CJ the X’s hallmark near-absurdist blink-and-you’ll-miss-it humor. What makes this video an instant classic of the medium, though, is how it lands: a deep, sincere, vulnerable love letter to empathy and human connection, wound up in a personal anecdote that makes the thesis feel even more real.

I struggled to have basic hope or faith in humanity this year. I struggled to tell myself that everything is worth it. No piece of media helped me more with those struggles than this video. I wrote a piece on my read of Inside before seeing this video, and after watching it, my read on Inside has changed. And I’m so grateful. — WW

“The Reign of the Slim Thick Influencer,” Khadija Mbowe

I hope that this creator needs no introduction, because I feel woefully unequipped to introduce them myself. Khadija Mbowe walks the walk, and the walk is an onerous one. Being a feminine-presenting nonbinary creator of an obsidian hue, they brazenly break down some of the most nuanced topics with empathy and levity. Moreover, they pay it forward by promoting creators that the algorithm may have missed — much like myself, and in the same way Tee Noir promoted them a year ago.

“ The Reign of the Slim-Thick Influencer ” is arguably my favorite Khadija Mbowe video this year. It’s a discussion of the trend of Brazilian butt lifts , how influencers like Kim Kardashian perpetuate unrealistic beauty standards, and the awful origins of commodifying the Black woman’s body. This is a must-see for everybody who consumes social media, which is … everybody. — RJ

“make more characters bi, you cowards: why (not) romance?,” voice memos for the void

An installment of Voice Memos for the Void’s Romance in Media series, “make more characters bi, you cowards: why (not) romance?” does what it says on the tin. This video analyzes the strange state of bisexual characters in media, pointing out how rarely bisexual characters get to fall in love. Not have sex, but fall in love. Voice Memos for the Void effortlessly combats rebuttals to this idea that we hear every time we ask for more representation and romance: “Why do they need to be queer?” “Why do they need to be in love?” It also dives into different depictions of masculinity, a history of Byronic heroes, and the troubling tropes that follow bisexual characters around in media, like that of the Magical and/or Hedonistic Bisexual . Forgive the glitchy camera in this video; equipment is expensive, and the commentary more than makes up for the video fidelity. We can thank F. D. Signifier’s feed for putting this video on my radar, too. — WW

“The Black Right Wing,” Anansi’s Library

While Tee Noir enjoys (?) a visibility that many POC creators don’t, Anansi boasts a dedicated 15,000 subscriber count but is deserving of far more. They stay closer to the format that many video essays have in the past of concealing their face in their videos, relying more on the merit of their musings than the luster of their looks. Many of us simply create and comment on the actions of others, but Anansi, for lack of a better term, is really in the field. They are deeply entrenched in American activism, which makes their videos simply an accompaniment to a much larger concerted effort.

This video on The Black Right Wing is redolent of the very fight that they have fought on many occasions. It details this unique subset of Black Americans that embraces the Trumpian conservatism that still plagues the United States to this very day. If you are fascinated by the neurosis necessary to align oneself with a party that is antipodal to your existence, then this is the video for you! — RJ

“On Leftist Disunity,” St. Andrewism

By now you must see the peaks and valleys that this list is riding, from creators who have passed the 100,000 mark to those who are still in the 10,000s. The themes that combine in all of them are apparent: their marginalized status, the video essay format, and most of all, the quality. Over the last year, the Trinibagan St. Andrewism has amassed over 50,000 subscribers, and his video On Leftist Disunity is a highlight. This video is the quintessential love letter to the leftist community that encourages the embrace of the many differences it has within it. Instead of approaching this with the pessimism that many people do, St. Andrew seems gleefully optimistic that this diversity of thought will end up saving not only the United States but the world. —RJ

“Break Bread,” F. D. Signifier

OK, now we can talk about F. D. Signifier in earnest. In my video essay list for our Masterpieces of Streaming series, I gave a brief history of video essays through the lens of educational videos. In “Breaking Bread,” F. D. Signifier offers an uncomfortably accurate parallel history: the rise of video essays from rant reviewers like The Nostalgia Critic. The trend of debate bros and, in F. D. Signifier’s words, every LeftTuber making a video about Ben Shapiro, isn’t just rooted in the medium’s history, though; it’s also rooted in whiteness. That lens and style of video stays prominent thanks to the YouTube algorithm, and while the homogeneity of video essays has been critiqued many times, “Break Bread” breaks down the issue with an astounding level of complexity, research, and guests from all over the video essay ecosystem. How much of a video essayist’s success comes down to talent? How much comes down to luck? And how much comes down to the algorithm knowing that what keeps people watching is simply who looks familiar? — WW
