Today we will read about a very popular topic “Advantages and disadvantages of online learning essay”.

So, let’s get started.

IELTS Writing Task 2 Topic: Advantages and Disadvantages of Online Classes

Let us help you in your IELTS writing preparation with an interesting and informative topic. Read all the 3 sample answers and learn how to approach a topic in different ways.

Advantages and Disadvantages of Online Classes Sample Answer One for IELTS Writing Task 2

Online teaching and learning have grown in popularity among students in recent times, and this is viewed differently by different learners. Many students see this as a helpful learning tool, although others believe it is not as successful as classroom instruction. This article would explore the benefits and drawbacks of digital education.

Advantages of Online Classes Essay

Students who study online have more flexibility in their schedules and spend less money on their education. They will study their desired courses and subjects at their own pace. This is a fantastic opportunity for learners to learn new skills and expand their experience while remaining in the comfort of their own home. For example, a Nepali student seeking an Australian degree in business administration does not need to travel to Australia; he can train and complete the course while remaining at home. As a result, distance learning is both cost-effective and time-efficient.

Disadvantages of Studying Online

That being said, online classes offer more emphasis on the analytical aspect of learning and there is less instructor and student contact. It ignores realistic learning elements and encourages passive learning. It is clear that students perceive it to be less successful than classroom instruction. According to a new survey, a larger percentage of students considered classroom instruction to be much more successful than digital education.

Conclusion: Merits and Demerits of Online Teaching

In conclusion, the ever-increasing availability of digital education has gained traction among young adults for many years and is viewed as helpful by many and less successful by others. The focus should be placed on its efficacy in order to identify it as the most cost-effective learning method other than classroom instruction.

Advantages and Disadvantages of Online Classes Sample Answer Two for IELTS Writing Task 2

Recently, the course has grown in popularity, resulting in more excellent learning options for students. While this movement may have some benefits, it may also have some risks and challenges as a result. Both sides of learning will be addressed in more detail in the following chapters. On the one hand, distance education has certain benefits. For starters, the simplicity of distance learning is essential.

There is no time constraint and the online classroom and teacher are (theoretically) accessible 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. As a result, students will stick to their schedules without impacting their learning outcomes.

Second, the advantage of learning is that it saves resources. Tuition at online schools is often smaller than at conventional universities. Building repairs, grounds maintenance, food service, class accessories, and other expenses that impact the cost of credits are not needed.

Learners, on the other hand, may suffer from a number of disadvantages of simulated learning. To continue, students can encounter technical issues, which can have a variety of implications.

Furthermore, some students are not equipped with the good internet access that online courses necessitate, and therefore fall behind their simulated classmates: poor monitors find it difficult to obey the course Management.

The system, as well as their learning process, becomes troublesome. Another downside to digital education is the scarcity of accreditation and the poor standard of instruction. The growing demand for digital education has resulted in an uncontrollable proliferation of colleges, including some unregulated schools, and there is no way to check the content of all courses. As a consequence, illegal organisations can con several students out of money.

Finally, online education can be helpful in terms of scheduling flexibility and reduced tuition. However, immersive learning has some drawbacks, including poor student conditions and a lack of quality control over classes.

Advantages and Disadvantages of Online Classes Sample Answer Three for IELTS Writing Task 2

These days, online learning is becoming increasingly popular. Many conventional colleges began to make their classes available for free. It represents a simple and convenient way to gain expertise in almost any area, from law and accounting to social sciences such as sociology, anthropology, and history. Digital education is a fantastic alternative to conventional universities, particularly for people who do not have the time or resources to attend traditional universities. So what are the benefits and drawbacks of online learning?

While many people still believe that traditional colleges are the only way to gain expertise and obtain a diploma, digital education has proven to be an excellent option. Students should study on their own time, and particularly for free. It is an excellent way to learn a variety of subjects while still increasing self-motivation. Online learning is so successful because students can complete their assignments easily, leaving more time for hobbies or job search.

Access to all of the opportunities of a typical course allows learners to practise wherever they are, giving them the opportunity to prepare wherever they choose. An individual may attend various courses with only an Internet connection. Students’ accountability and self-discipline are among the benefits of digital learning.

Limitations of Online Learning

An individual can only learn properly in a small group. Learners learn at school how to make new friends, be polite, deal with failure, and, most importantly, compete. Competition among colleagues can be very exciting, and students can learn greatly from it. Human contact is not possible for digital learning.

Another drawback is that online classes cannot handle the thousands of students who attempt to participate in debates. Furthermore, if digital education is intended for disciplines that need preparation, it can be challenging.

Conclusion of Studying Online

Finally, digital education can be seen as a supplement to and expansion to traditional ways of learning. Even the best online course cannot completely substitute physical interaction with an instructor or the human connections formed in a group. As a result, standard classes can not be replaced by digital learning.

Any essay can be satisfactory if addressed correctly. It is critical to remember in IELTS writing that each type of essay necessitates a different approach. In the case of an ‘advantage and disadvantage’ essay, a mixture of solid structure and appropriate data is a game-changer. As a result, in order to achieve a 9 band in your exam, you must devote some time to planning and structuring your essay.

Band 9 essay sample: Online learning is better than classroom learning. Do you agree?

by Manjusha Nambiar · Published July 2, 2015 · Updated April 23, 2024

Essay prompt

Giving lectures in auditoriums to large numbers of students is an old way of teaching. With the technology available today there is no justification for it, and everything should be done online. To what extent do you agree or disagree? Give your own opinion.

Sample essay

Technology has changed every aspect of our life including the way we learn and teach. Nowadays it is possible to earn degrees online. Online forums allow you to ask questions on any topic and receive answers within a matter of minutes. However, I still believe that online education cannot replace classroom based learning and teaching.

Online learning has its advantages. You can learn from the comforts of your home. The flexible learning hours are a boon for people who can’t afford to spend 6 or 7 hours in the classroom. Also, the internet has made it possible for learners to find teachers from any part of the world. So, for example, a student who wants to learn Spanish can find Spanish teachers online and learn from her home. She doesn’t have to go to Spain or find an institution that teaches Spanish in her country.

Online learning has its disadvantages too. Since there is no one to supervise your work or evaluate your progress you need a great amount of motivation and discipline to complete your course successfully. Distractions are a real problem for students doing online programs.

By contrast, classroom learning does not have many of these drawbacks. The best thing about classroom learning is that it creates an ambiance conducive to learning. In a class you are surrounded by other students who also want to score higher grades. This encourages you to work harder. In addition, subjects like medicine and engineering cannot be taught online because the emphasis is on practical not theory.

To conclude, online learning may have its benefits, but I still feel that classroom learning is superior to online learning. That said, the internet and information technology has endless possibilities. Both students and teachers will benefit a lot if they take advantage of the power of the internet in the classroom.

IELTS Task 2 Writing – Online Education – Band 9

IELTS Task 2 Writing

You should spend about 40 minutes on this task.

Online education is rapidly increasing in popularity. What has led to this development? What are the advantages and disadvantages of online learning compared to in-class instructions? Provide examples and explanations.

Learning via the internet is quickly becoming mainstream among pupils. What are the motivating factors behind this change? What are the positives and negatives of remote learning versus in-person study? Give examples and explanations.

Write at least 250 words.

*When you are practicing Task 2 at home, your planning, and developing ideas should take 20 – 30 minutes, and you should write it all down!

*During your official exam, your Task 2 planning MUST not take more than 5 minutes, you should only write down the paraphrase of the question and your thesis.

TOPIC = Online education

Controlling Idea(s) = reasons for its popularity and the advantages and disadvantages

*Third person essay

What is online education?

Remote learning through the use of computers and the internet whereby students and teachers are separated by space and/or time.

Why is online education popular? (What are the advantages of online learning?)

It is more accessible (no restrictions of distance or boarders), convenient (less time, no commute), diverse (for teachers and content), affordable.

How does it work?

Through the use of a computer and the internet; software, video, audio, camera, mic.

Why can online educations be disadvantageous compared to in-class learning?

Distractions (less focused), technical problems, lower quality of socialization with peers and teachers, lack of physical movement.

(***What has accelerated online learning nowadays? A: viral infection, pandemic)

THESIS (the points for discussion and persuasion in your essay)

Some negatives of remote learning are more distractions and less socialization while the main reasons for virtual learnings rise in popularity, and its benefits, are convenience, affordability, and diversity.

Introduction (hook, background, thesis)

Certainly, the revolution of online education is well under way worldwide. Modern technology, namely the computer and the internet, has enabled billions of people to learn from the comfort of their homes and this has had a massive impact on education systems.  Some negatives of remote learning are more distractions and less socialization while the main reasons for virtual pedagogy’s rise in popularity, and its benefits, are convenience, affordability, and diversity.

Body 1 – Topic Sentence – introduce, in detail, the concept/points of body paragraph 1 (more distraction and less socialization)

Two commonly observed deficits of learning from the comfort of the home are plenty of competing stimuli that draw attention from studies as well as a lack of interaction with peers. (Explanation – Why? What do you mean?) Friends, family, the television, or even the smell of a home-cooked meal can frequently distract home learners from their studies, and it is much easier to get up from the lesson and engage in these interruptions than doing this while sitting in a physical classroom. Furthermore, learners are not able to easily start a conversation and group work with their peers because they are often unavailable in time and/or space with virtual learning. (Example – 9/10 “Oh yeah, that’s happened with me. I can empathize” Think of 2 or 3 examples and pick the best one. Ideally, it is an example that may be applied to both body paragraphs.) When designing a business plan in an online class, it is easy to procrastinate and play football with friends instead of doing the work, also, delays happen because of poor communication among group members.  (Connecting/concluding sentence) However, these deficits of online learning can be managed and there are many benefits to such method of study.

Body 2 (Topic, Explanation and Example)

Many students favour and opt for online courses because it saves them time and money and they can choose their educational path from a broad range of courses and teachers that they can study from anytime and anywhere. (Explanation) Through distance learning, students do not need to spend hours each week commuting to school and they can pick from thousands of different courses taught by millions of teachers worldwide. Often, many of these courses cost a fraction of in-class learning because there are significantly lower overhead costs. A business degree in a physical university can costs over 20 thousand dollars in tuition, but the same degree completed online may only cost two thousand dollars.

Conclusion (points restated, argument strengthened, take-home-message)

In conclusion, although internet education can lack focus and interaction, its rise to stardom is fueled by its accessibility, cost, and variety. It is definitely an effective method of learning that is continuing to develop and helps propel humanity towards the next level of pedagogy.

IELTS Writing Task 2: Online Learning

Universities offer an online course for students. Do you think its a positive or negative development for students?

From (1) the last few decades, educational institutions have witnessed a tremendous change in the way of teaching, due to technological inventions. However, in my opinion, online courses provide extravagant benefits to educatees, I also believe that there might be a definite drawback if all courses are made online (2) . To begin with, there are several advantages of self-study courses which are offered by universities. First and foremost, online courses provide a great deal of flexibility and freedom for students, in terms of commuting to college and attending classes (3) . In other words, online courses can be taken from anywhere, which in turn enable people who are working to pursue their higher education. A prime example is a survey conducted by UNESCO by taking a sample of 10 years data from oxford university (4) , in terms number of students in each course. The results were astonishing, as students opting for online courses have skyrocketed exponentially (5) right from the introduction of online courses in the university curriculum. Nevertheless, the advantages of online courses have not all been beneficial. That’s because, one of the fundamental responsibility of educational institution is to provide an environment wherein students can learn skills, such as empathy, debate, discourse et cetera. Furthermore, no one can replace the true value added in education by lecturers who guide, support and motivate students to set high goals and thrive to achieve those goals. To sum up, development of online courses are extremely useful for pupils to suffice (6) their hunger for knowledge, along with their normal routine work. However, giving more importance to the online course can lead to adverse ramifications, which disable students from learning human skills which are utmost essential in one’s life (7) . 287 words

The commentaries are marked in brackets with number (*). The numbered commentaries are found below. The part in italics is taken from the text, the word underlined is the suggested correction. Words in (brackets) are the suggested addition to the original phrase or sentence.

1. Over (or in ) the last few decades — I believe the result of development is meant here. So we can either imply the gradual improvement with ‘over’ , or use the more generalised ‘in’ . 2.   Even though online courses provide extraordinary benefits to educatees, I believe that there might be a definite drawback if all courses are made online — I’ve taken the liberty to alter the sentence to make the contrasting more evident. I also changed ‘extravagant’ to ‘extraordinary’ as it is a more common collocation . 3. Use of commas in the text is not always optimal. There is a nice (and long) article on commas here . I might compile a shorter set of must-know rules later. 4.   A prime example is a survey conducted by UNESCO in which  a sample of 10 years data from Oxford University , in terms number of students in each course.( A prime example is a survey conducted by UNESCO using data collected by Oxford University over 10 years on number of students in each course )  — Names of universities, various institutions and organisations are normally capitalised. The sentence is difficult to understand because of three separate clauses. Consider breaking it up into shorter ones. Sentence in brackets is my suggestion that does not involve turning one sentence into two. 5.   have skyrocketed — ‘skyrocketed’ already implies surging growth, you don’t need to emphasise it any further, even if it means using fancy vocabulary. 6.   To sum up, the development of online courses is  extremely useful for pupils to satisfy  their hunger for knowledge — ‘satisfy’ collocates with ‘hunger’, ‘suffice’ doesn’t. 7.  However, giving more importance to the online course can lead to adverse ramifications  that   prevent  students from learning human skills which are essential in one’s life — ‘disable’  and  ‘from’ aren’t used together.  ‘Utmost’ is not an adverb and you need one if you want to use it with the adjective ‘essential’ here . Avoid using two ‘which’ determiners in one sentence.

A well-structured essay with clear ideas and decent use of vocabulary. A more focused punctuation would make it very decent — namely the use of commas needs some brushing up. Another aspect that needs attention is collocations — some of the expressions have established word pairs (‘to satisfy hunger’, ‘prevent from doing something’).

Students with good command of English usually believe that the longer and more complicated sentences they write, the higher score they will get. While this is partially true, longer sentences can be tricky to do right and they are usually harder to understand. A minor mistake in a bigger sentence can make it impossible to make out which can seriously harm the final score. Keep this in mind when planning your narrative.

The use of online technology is ubiquitous in everyday life, including education. Increasingly, people today find online learning more effective due to advancements in technology. The following essay compares the pros and cons of online learning.

Online education offers the advantage of allowing students to attend classes from any location. It also allows schools to reach an extensive network of students instead of being constrained by geographical borders. Also, sessions can be recorded, archived, and shared and made available for future use. Thus, the learning materials are accessible at any time that is convenient for the students. In addition to that, online learning also provides teachers with a flexible delivery method for the classes. In addition to traditional textbooks, online resources such as videos, PDFs, and podcasts can be incorporated into the lesson plan to help educators be more efficient. Further, compared to traditional learning, online education is significantly more affordable. During online courses, expenses such as transportation costs, meals, and, most notably, their renting costs, if any, are cut down . Moreover, all course materials are available online, creating an eco-friendly, paperless educational environment.

In contrast, the biggest challenge of online learning for many students is keeping their attention on the screen for long periods. Social media and other sites can easily distract students who are learning online. A reliable connection that has decent speed is hard to find in smaller cities and towns. The learning process can be disrupted if students or teachers do not have a consistent internet connection. Furthermore, online learning entails an increase in screen time . Children spending so much time in front of a screen is a concern for many parents. It is also common for students to develop bad posture when hunched over the e-device or affects eyesight.

In conclusion, learning online has some advantages and some limitations. Even though it may be convenient for some people, it cannot completely replace traditional classroom teaching. In my opinion, the positives of online education eventually surpass the downsides.

Since the past few years, distant teaching as well as learning have turned  progressively  popular amongst students. Also, this  methodology  is being  perceived  positively by a lot of learners as well. Plenty of students are finding it beneficial to learn online. However, there are a few who have the  conflicting  opinion. In the forthcoming paragraphs, I will discuss both advantages and disadvantages of online learning.

As far as the merits are concerned, studying on the internet enables students to make use of flexible timing. It also costs far less than physically going to attend classes. Moreover, there is an option to learn anything desirable at a suitable timing. This offers extremely  profound  opportunities for learners to acquire new skills and strengthen the existing knowledge by sitting at the comfortable couch in their own living room. For instance, a student residing in a remote village can learn a course that is affiliated with an international education body. This way, distant learning is not just time-saving but remunerative as well.

Quite contrarily, with online courses, there is always more concentration on  theoretical learning . Online classes have the dearth of practical aspects of learning. Also, there is restricted interaction between the teacher and students. It is evident that taking online classes is not the cup of tea for every student, especially the ones who are into learning in detail. One of the recent studies has shown that a great number of students found classroom teaching more effective than online classes.

Concluding this topic, it can be said that the ever-evolving availability of online learning has  reaped popularity among youngsters. It is considered beneficial by many, and ineffective by others. Model Essay 1

The landscape of education is undergoing a transformative shift, with e-learning emerging as a powerful alternative to traditional face-to-face instruction. While proponents of online education tout its expansive reach and flexibility, others argue that traditional educational methods are indispensable for a comprehensive educational experience. In my view, although e-learning significantly enriches the educational spectrum by offering unparalleled accessibility, it cannot fully replace traditional methods which provide essential practical experiences and interpersonal interactions necessary for comprehensive learning.

E-learning's most significant advantage lies in its accessibility and scalability. Traditional educational institutions often grapple with limitations such as physical space and resource availability, constraints e-learning transcends by harnessing the power of digital platforms. For example, a student in a remote village can access the same quality of education as one in a bustling city, provided they have internet connectivity. Moreover, online platforms incorporate adaptive learning technologies that tailor educational content to meet individual learning speeds and styles, a customization that traditional classrooms struggle to offer.

Despite these advantages, the inherent value of traditional education cannot be overlooked. Practical disciplines like medicine, engineering, and the arts often require hands-on experience that virtual environments cannot replicate. For instance, medical students benefit immensely from real-life clinical rotations where they interact with patients under the supervision of experienced practitioners. Such direct interactions are crucial for developing critical professional competencies that cannot be fully simulated online.

Furthermore, traditional educational settings foster a different kind of interpersonal communication and teamwork. The spontaneous interactions that occur in physical classrooms - ranging from group discussions to peer assessments - build interpersonal skills essential in the professional world. The physical presence of teachers also facilitates immediate feedback and personalized mentoring, which can be less effective in an online setting.

In conclusion, while e-learning offers significant benefits and will continue to be an integral part of the educational landscape, it is unlikely to completely replace traditional education. Both forms of learning have distinct advantages and can coexist to provide a richer, more diverse educational ecosystem.

Model Essay 2

Education system is changing day by day. While some believe that distance learning and teaching methods will be dominant in the future because of its positive aspects, others think that the latter system could not be used as a substitute. In my opinion, even though e-learning has some benefits, the former one will remain as the main education system.

In terms of upsides, firstly, the number of students is not a problem. Even though the schools have a capacity, there is a wide range of students in the new system. Hence, far more people could improve themselves as they would use the internet to be able to learn courses. Secondly, individuals do not have to spend their limited time to commute in e-learning. They could benefit from either sleeping or studying instead of travelling from home to school. It may be possible to be a more successful person in their life as they will have more time to study. However, despite the benefits, it is obvious that the traditional system will remain as a significant education system.

None of the education programs could consist of only theoretical information. Especially in some departments such as medicine, architecture and engineering, practical education is essential. To be more precise, these professions could be detrimental for societies without practice. For instance, if doctors are not taught how to examine patients, there would be many ones who suffer from delayed treatments. Additionally, the traditional type is much more effective. Students have more materials such as the authority of the lecturer, communication with the classmates and increased enthusiasm in the class environment.

In conclusion, although some people think that e-learning will overtake face-to-face-education, from my perspective, it could be impossible because of the necessity of traditional one for an effective and comprehensive education.

IELTS Essay: Socialising Online

by Mahfy (Dhaka, Bangladesh)

Nowadays, more people are choosing to socialise online rather than face to face. Is this a positive or negative development? It is a fact that, numerous people are choosing to socialize virtually rather than face to face. Personally, I think this kind of development is negative and, in this essay, I will support my view with examples. Firstly, an online person may possess threat as they cannot be trusted properly. They might carry a fake identity as it is easier to open a social account with fake details. Therefore, it is easier to get scammed or get played by trust from such online friends. Conversely, a real-life friend is more trusted as they have a real identity and can be seen more often. Thus, it is difficult to lie face to face, they carry less lies compared to virtual friends. Secondly, many people are getting addictive to the online social network. As online platforms have large audience and have more activities to enjoy with friends. As a result, many health complications are seen such as eyesight difficulties, obesity, and bad postures. For instance, resent research showed that 60% of adults in Dhaka who use digital devices have eyesight problems and 40% of adults have bad body posture. However, compared to virtual friends, hanging out with real life friends is more beneficial as it reduces online addiction. This may lead to much healthier life and environment to live on. In conclusion, socializing online is a negative development to me as they convey threats, lack of trusts, carry more lies. People should engage more with real life friends as it provides more trusted, healthier, and secured life.
