Brief Description
At the Kemmy Business School (KBS) you’ll find a vibrant research environment with faculty who are leaders in their field, and where there is a strong focus on students engaging in translational research – research that has impact and consequences for organisational change and public policy. Students work on their research projects with their supervisor(s)/supervisory team. Research students develop advanced skills in designing and conducting research; skills applicable to a variety of careers in academia, business, government and non-profit organisations.
- The Graduate Research Centre of the Kemmy Business School (KBS), which is home to our full-time PhD and Masters degree students, is situated in the Foundation Building at the University of Limerick (which also houses a large part of the University’s research activity across all faculties). The Centre was established in 1993 with the purpose of ensuring that students engaged in postgraduate research have a “home” and an identity, and to provide the services and infrastructure necessary for their studies. The Centre hosts more than 100 postgraduate students pursuing Masters and PhD degrees across a range of business disciplines. It also embraces a number of research centres which facilitate the grouping of faculty, research fellows, postgraduate students and post-doctorate students who share common research interests.
- All research students are key members of our four cutting-edge research themes under the umbrella theme of “Organisation Science & Public Policy”. Additional information on our thematic approach to research is available at http://www.ul.ie/business/research/research-themes
- KBS offers research degrees at both Masters and PhD levels: students can apply and register at any stage of the academic year for a research degree, both part-time and full-time, as applications are considered monthly during the academic year.
- Upon graduation many KBS graduates take up senior academic posts, or secure positions with government or private sector organisations.
- Whatever your future plans, a research degree from the KBS will give you an opportunity to make an impact.

Many KBS faculty have developed strong research networks and collaborate with scholars around the world. Because our work is relevant to the needs of businesses and organisations throughout the public and third sectors, KBS faculty provide consultation to top businesses and advise policymakers. These connections open doors for students across sectors and both nationally and internationally.
Coupled with its world-wide network of collaborative research partnerships, the KBS offers many benefits to students. All research students are key members of our four cutting-edge research themes under the umbrella theme of “Organisation Science & Public Policy”. More specifically, the four research sub-themes are as follows:
- Work, Knowledge & Employment
- Services Economy & Tourism
- Entrepreneurship, Innovation & Marketing

- Each theme is lead by two senior academics in the school. More details on the KBS Research themes are available at http://www.ul.ie/business/research/research-themes
Other benefits to consider:

The PhD in Management and Marketing offers you the opportunity to pursue research on a specialist topic in management or marketing. The PhD is now, effectively, a pre-requisite for a career in academia.
"Since undertaking the PhD programme with the Department of Management & Marketing, I have gained invaluable experience from weekly seminars and workshops run by both the Department and the Humanities. I have also tutored on a number of modules which has both informed my research and enhanced my teaching skills. There is a great sense of camaraderie between the PhD students and the MSc students. The Department has been extremely helpful in providing the necessary resources to support us in our undertakings." PhD Student

PhD/Research Degrees in Ireland
A PhD is the highest degree awarded at universities in Ireland. Study is based on a substantial research project in an area of academic interest, typically up to 100,000 words in length, written as a thesis which must be defended in an oral examination at the end of the programme. All PhD students are assigned a supervisor, and the duration of a PhD is typically three years full-time and six years part-time.
Very few research degrees feature taught modules, and students are expected to take more responsibility for their work and schedule. Universities in Ireland are known for their academic excellence and state-of-the-art research infrastructure, along with their support for enterprise partnerships lending much value to a PhD degree from Ireland.
PhD Entry Requirements
Irish universities are free to admit anyone to a PhD programme, with admission generally conditional on the prospective student having completed an undergraduate degree with at least upper second-class honours and a masters degree. English language ability proof is a must, and a minimum IELTS score of 6.5 is generally required. There is usually a first-year assessment to remain in study, and the thesis is submitted at the end of the completed programme.
Once you have decided on an area of research and have looked into how you will fund your study, several documents are required when submitting your application. They include:
- Academic transcripts
- Academic references
- Personal statement
- Research proposal
- PhD Research Proposal
A research proposal ( example ) is required by all students when applying to study for a PhD. The proposal should address the research you wish to undertake, how you will do it, and why it is important. A panel of experts must accept the proposal before your programme can begin.
Other types of PhD
- mphil (master of philosophy).
If you wish to study for a PhD, you may first need to begin an MPhil and then transfer to a PhD programme after 12-18 months. An MPhil is also a qualification in its own right and is generally thesis-only, lasting one year full-time and two years part-time. The thesis must present the results of a study and research and be a maximum of 60,000 words.
Students choose to study an MPhil if the proposed research has insufficient scope for a full PhD.
- MRes (Master of Research)
An MRes is an advanced postgraduate research degree in art, humanities and social sciences. Some PhDs require an MRes qualification before beginning a PhD proper, and the student must complete a 40,000-word dissertation.
An MRes is an excellent test to see if you enjoy conducting your research without fully committing to and finding funding for a full PhD.
- Professional Doctorate
Professional doctorates are similar to a PhD but are intended to advance professional practice rather than improve academic ability. Common professional doctorates include law, education, business, engineering and medicine.
How much does a PhD cost?
Funding and researching a PhD can be expensive, with non-EU students paying up to £9,000 to £30,000 per year or more, depending on the chosen programmes and institutions.
It is rare for a PhD student not to be supported by some form of bursary, grant or scholarship , and many universities and research councils provide monetary support for part or all of a PhD programme.
