With the support of seasoned faculty members, Harrah College of Hospitality doctoral students learn through a combination of coursework/exams, teaching, and original research that culminates in a dissertation. Full-time students typically complete the program’s required 60 credit hours within 3 to 3.5 years, while part-time students average between 4.5 and 5.5 years.

Funding Your Education

Those applying to be full-time Ph.D. students are awarded graduate assistantships, which provide a monthly stipend, tuition waiver, and a partial fee waiver. In addition, the college offers a stipend for research activities and conference attendance.

Ph.D. Hospitality Administration

The Conrad N. Hilton College of Global Hospitality Leadership Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) emphasizes flexibility, independence and inter-disciplinary study to accommodate the needs and research interests of students both from the U.S. and around the world. As a requirement of the doctoral program, students are expected to obtain experience in teaching and research. Graduate faculty will mentor the students in the classroom as well as in research settings.

Ph.D.: Hospitality and Tourism Management Concentration

This program will prepare you for a career in research and teaching at institutions throughout the United States and abroad.

The coursework includes several hospitality and tourism management courses as well as a group of research design and statistics courses. You will also complete courses in supporting fields of inquiry such as psychology, sociology, management, marketing, etc. The program typically requires four years to finish, including courses, a second-year paper, a comprehensive exam, and a doctoral dissertation. Applicants with strong hospitality and tourism management backgrounds are preferred. Incoming students are expected to have both good written and oral communication skills, as well as the analytical skills required to master research methods and statistics.

Admission requirements

We prefer the GMAT, but we do accept the GRE test as a substitute. In either case, the exam must have been taken within 5 years of the time of application to WSU.

Desired prerequisites

In general, you must meet the following prerequisites to be accepted into the program:

  • A master’s degree (M.S., M.A. in a related discipline, or MBA), although outstanding applicants with bachelor’s degree will be considered
  • A GPA higher than 3.25 on a 4.00 scale
  • Hospitality and/or tourism related background (educational or professional)
  • Interests and goals that complement faculty interests and the program’s goals
  • Letters of recommendation supporting your candidacy for admission
  • A substantial industry experience (strongly preferred)

While applicants may have diverse profiles, an educational or business background that reflects an understanding of and interest in hospitality and tourism management is advantageous. Students with an MBA or business experience, in particular, are preferred. Because the program is focused on graduating students qualified to teach at high-quality, research-oriented institutions, you should have good command of the English language, both spoken and written, and have a reasonable level of skill in mathematics to facilitate the mastery of research methods and statistics. You should also have competencies in hospitality and tourism management in addition to accounting, economics, finance, management, marketing, operations management, and computer skills.  If you are deficient in any of these areas, additional coursework and preparation beyond the major course of study may be required. Your advisory committee will determine these requirements.

General Competency

The requirements for this program follow the Ph.D. Program in Business Administration Policies and Procedures and Program Requirements in the Carson College of Business. The concentration in Hospitality and Tourism takes advantage of existing course and seminar offerings in the other five business disciplines to offer a diverse and flexible high-quality program. The program requirements for the concentration in Hospitality and Tourism Management are designed to develop proficiency in the student’s major field of study with applications in hospitality business management.

Research tool requirements

A minimum of 4 research tool courses to be selected by the student with the approval from his/her Ph.D. committee.

  • ANOVA (e.g., Psych 511, Stat 507, Stat 512, or Soc 522)
  • Regression/Econometrics (e.g., Psych 512, Soc 521, Stat 530, Stat 533, Stat 535, EconS 511, or EconS 512)
  • Psychometric Theory (e.g., Psych 514 or Stat 520)
  • Multivariate Statistics (e.g., BA596, Mktg 594, Stat 519, MgtOp519, or MgtOp591) or Applied Structural Equation Modeling (Psych 516)

These suggested courses above may be substituted for other courses that treat each of the above topics in a comprehensive fashion, as approved by the student’s program committee. Although four research tool courses are required, additional research courses may be taken as part of the student’s supporting field requirements.

Supporting field requirements

Coursework in the area of specialization is intended to provide necessary skills and knowledge to conduct research in a chosen field. Courses must be related to an area of study selected by the student and approved by the doctoral student’s committee. Supporting doctoral level coursework may be selected from areas such as (but not limited to) research seminars in anthropology, psychology, sociology, economics, management, international business, information systems, marketing, communication, etc. Additional coursework in HBM may also be taken, with approval from the doctoral student’s committee.

PhD Research Credit Requirements

In addition to major field requirements, business electives, and supporting field requirements, the Ph.D. in Hospitality and Tourism Management requires additional research credits associated with the development of the final dissertation. A minimum of 32 (800 level) research credit hours is required.

Annual Review and Written and Preliminary Exams

The goal of the annual reviews and the exams is to assess the candidate’s overall mastery of the core body of knowledge in the field and the degree of preparation to undertake research independently or with minimal supervision. The Ph.D. Program area coordinator and committee along with appropriate advisors will annually review the progress of the students in terms of publications and research effort. The Preliminary Exam (scheduled sometime during the third year in the program) will test the candidate’s knowledge in five areas:

  • Hospitality and tourism management major field requirements: Hospitality and Tourism Management core knowledge includes a thorough understanding of hospitality and tourism, and behavioral research methods.
  • Business electives: The student should be able to demonstrate an appropriate level of understanding of theories and research methods aligned with those business disciplines chosen for further study, including finance, information systems, international business, management, operations, and/or marketing.
  • Hospitality and tourism research: The student should be able to demonstrate a thorough understanding of hospitality and tourism research, including explanatory theories and past research findings. In addition, the candidate is expected to demonstrate command over the relevant literature from his/her supporting field.
  • Hospitality and tourism research methods and statistics: The student should also have an extensive knowledge of statistics and the research methodologies that can be employed to study hospitality and tourism phenomena from a behavioral standpoint.
  • Oral and written communication skills: Given the program’s focus on producing hospitality and tourism scholars who can be successful at other accredited, peer or better research universities, the student is also expected to show a high level of written and oral communication skills exhibited in the written and oral comprehensive exams, research presentations at national/international conferences, and publications in hospitality & tourism journals.

You have a lot to consider as you research and compare graduate hospitality programs . In this section, we answer a few of the most common questions from MS and PhD applicants, including test score requirements, what a hotel PhD entails, and available support resources.

What tests are required to apply for the MS and PhD degree programs?

Applicants for the MS and PhD programs in hotel administration are required to submit a GMAT or GRE score. GMAT and GRE scores are valid for up to five years.

Students must meet the English Language Proficiency Requirement and may be required to take the TOEFL or the IELTS exam. In some cases, these testing requirements can be waived. Cornell University recently has been made aware of fraudulent activity targeting overseas students and researchers, including at least one third party website falsely stating that it is offering a postdoctoral or visiting scholar program in association with Cornell. These scams, which may seek to obtain money and/or personal details from interested applicants, are fraudulent.

Our PhD program in Hotel and Tourism Management (HTM) gives students the time and resources to delve into the industry, to engage in rigorous research, and to publish their findings.

Our PhD graduates become top scholars, professors and researchers at the leading hospitality and tourism programs in the US and abroad. Our graduates are successful because our program offers:

Students generally complete a PhD in HTM within 4-5 years. Students must take core courses in theory and research methods, as well as electives and minor classes. In addition, our doctoral students must pass a qualifying and comprehensive examination. Students also teach at Isenberg. About PhD study

This course is available for you to study either on a full-time or part-time basis and you have the flexibility to switch should you need to.

A PhD is founded on independent research.  You will undertake a systematic and in-depth exploration of your chosen topic to produce a substantial body of knowledge and make an original and important contribution to the subject area.

We run an annual conference for doctoral students, where you are encouraged to present a paper about your research. As well as being an opportunity to discuss your work with other students, the conference is a chance to gain valuable experience in presenting your research and participating in open discussions with academic peers.

Once you start a PhD course at UWL, you become part of our research community.   • Discussion  and  Conclusion: The researcher presents his interpretation of results in this chapter and states whether the research hypothesis has been verified or not. An essential aspect of this section is to establish the link between the results and evidence from the literature. Recommendations with regard to the implications of the findings and directions for the future may also be provided. Finally, a summary of the overall research, along with final judgments, opinions, and comments, must be included in the form of suggestions for improvement.

Oxford Brookes has a well-established tradition of research in hospitality, tourism and events and is an internationally recognised centre of excellence in these fields. Our research in hospitality, tourism and events encompasses work on sustainable planning and development; experience design and customer experience management; organizational behaviour; digital marketing; revenue and financial management; strategy; entrepreneurship; consumer behaviour; stakeholder engagement and social impacts. Our colleagues working in these fields bring a range of disciplinary expertise, and our research promotes responsible business practice, while seeking to create positive impacts.

If you study for a PhD in Hospitality, Tourism and Events, you will normally be linked to either the Centre of Business Society and Global Challenges (BSGC) or Oxford Regions Innovation, Enterprise Lab (ORIEL) depending on your chosen topic, but we also maintain strong links with colleagues working in the International Centre for Coaching and Mentoring Studies (ICCAMS) .

Degree routes

All students enrol as probationer research students. The degree for which you register will depend on your academic qualifications and research experience. During the first year you will formally register your research proposal for one of the below routes.

If you undertake an MPhil you will:

  • critically investigate and evaluate an approved topic
  • demonstrate understanding of research methods appropriate to the chosen field
  • present and defend a substantial thesis by oral examination.

Thesis: 50,000 words

Length of study: Full-time: 2-3 years. Part-time: 3-4 years.

The criteria for a PhD are similar to those for an MPhil, with the key difference that:

  • the research carried out will result in an independent and original contribution to knowledge.

Thesis: 100,000 words

Length of study: Full-time: 3-4 years. Part-time: 4-6 years.

You will be supported in developing and sharing your expertise through:

  • training as an Associate Lecturer and the opportunity to engage in teaching activity on appropriate modules offered by the Business School.

Learning and assessment

While every candidate’s exact experience will vary according to their particular discipline, topic and methodology, there are a number of common elements that all students will undertake:

  • critically investigating and evaluating an approved topic
  • undertaking an analytical review of the existing literature in your topic area to set the theoretical context for your work and help demonstrate the gap in knowledge you will address
  • developing and then implementing a rigorous and appropriate methodology for researching your topic
  • demonstrating that your research conforms to all relevant ethical codes of practice
  • extensive primary field research, analysis and evaluation.

Your progression will be monitored through an annual process undertaken at the end of each academic year, and through two key progression points after approximately six months and eighteen months of study respectively.

Tuition fees

Fees quoted are for the first year only. If you are studying a course that lasts longer than one year, your fees will increase each year.

For International fees the following factors will be taken into account by the University when it is setting the annual fees: inflationary measures such as the retail price indices, projected increases in University costs, changes in the level of funding received from Government sources, admissions statistics and access considerations including the availability of student support. 

Home fees are set by UK Research and Innovation (UKRI) and are released approximately five months before the start of each academic year.

​If you are a graduate in tourism, hospitality and events, or a similar discipline, this International Tourism & Hospitality Management PhD / PhD by Published Works programme offers an excellent opportunity to expand your knowledge and research skills. This full-time or part-time doctoral programme is suitable for people who have a particular research question or topic in mind and wish to explore this through independent study to produce an original contribution to the subject.

As an International Tourism & Hospitality Management PhD student at Northampton, you can develop research plans and apply methods involving both quantitative and qualitative data, supported by proper research methods training. You will be guided by a small supervisory team of academic experts under the direction of a Director of Studies. You will be expected to fully engage with skills development and training and to present your research in a range of scholarly contexts. Your PhD will be assessed via submission of a written thesis and a viva voce (an oral examination). After successful oral defence (viva voce) of the final thesis. The researcher will be awarded with the highest qualification that any UK university can award.

Course Content

This International Tourism & Hospitality Management PhD programme is a way for you to develop your specialism and improve your skills in research, academic writing, and presentation. While developing your research projects, you will initially receive general, face-to-face, and project-specific training, to enable you to conduct your research effectively and independently. Normally, our PhD students are initially register for an MPhil and within the first twelve months of their study they are expected to transfer from the MPhil to a PhD programme. The transfer process requires our students to produce a detailed research proposal and apply for ethics approval. Students will be required to present their written piece of work to an academic audience and then proceed for the internal viva examination with an internal transfer viva examiner. The transfer viva process, appointment of the internal examiner, and approval of ethics documents are all subject to approval by the University research committees. All PhD students are assigned a supervisory team which consists of a Director of Study (DOS), and first and second supervisors. Our students must work independently on their research, under the advice and guidance of their supervisory team. Due to the nature of PhD study, our students spend a vast majority of their time studying and engaging in independent research. Students must have supervision meetings regularly with to discuss their progress, to create an action plan for the next steps of their programme, and to receive suggestions on their research and projects.

​Applicants are expected to hold a master’s degree in a relevant discipline from an approved university ​ ​or ​ ​Applicants are expected to hold a good 2:1 or first class honours undergraduate degree in an area of study appropriate to your project proposal ​ ​If you do not meet the entry requirements above, you may be admitted with lower-level qualifications, or qualifications in a different subject area but relevant experience considered by the University to be appropriate. These applications will be considered on an individual basis. ​ ​For a successful application, your academic credentials are important. We pay close attention to the suitability of our candidates for both the programme and the research interests of our team of academics. PhD applicants are assessed based on their previous academic performance, the quality of their research proposal, and the availability of suitable members of staff to supervise their chosen research topic.​​

English language requirements​

If English is not your first language, you must have proficiency in written and spoken English (normally a minimum test score of IELTS Academic: 7.0 or above with a minimum of 6.5 in each component including writing, or equivalent). Given the nature of the programme, you will be expected to read and engage with complex theoretical texts and debates for which fluency in English is essential. ​Applications submitted with IELTS lower than 5.5 in all components will not be considered.

New professor brings behavioral and social science perspective to Department of Hospitality, Hotel Management and Tourism

Gip background in tourism, organizational leadership and instruction will benefit students.

With a diverse background in the tourism industry and college-level instruction, Robert “Rob” Gip, Ph.D., brings new perspectives on hospitality and tourism leadership to his position as an assistant professor in the Department of Hospitality, Hotel Management and Tourism in the Texas A&M College of Agriculture and Life Sciences , Bryan-College Station.

Gip is integrating his research and teaching interests to benefit the department and its students across the domains of human resources management, organizational behavior, leadership, employee health and well-being, and cross-cultural and community studies.   

“We are fortunate to have recruited a talent such as Dr. Gip into our department who brings depth of knowledge in the behavioral and social sciences, public administration and hospitality management,” said Brian King, Ph.D., head of the Department of Hospitality, Hotel Management and Tourism. “He is providing the department with new perspectives and insights into hospitality and tourism leadership, particularly about how psychological safety, knowledge sharing and proactive work behaviors contribute to service organizations.”  

Gip earned his doctorate in hospitality administration from the Conrad N. Hilton College of Global Hospitality Leadership at the University of Houston. He earned a master’s degree in hospitality and tourism management, a bachelor’s degree in interdisciplinary studies with a focus on behavioral and social sciences, and a certificate in event management, all from Rosen College of Hospitality Management at the University of Central Florida, Orlando.

Experience in service and hospitality industries

Gip’s early professional experience included roles as assistant cafe and bakery manager and day spa manager. After this, he was a logistics coordinator at Lowe & Behold in Orlando, a golf attendant at Disney’s Magnolia Golf Course, an event concierge at Hyatt Orlando and a human services worker at Tacachale Developmental Disability Center in Gainesville.

He said a common thread through all of these experiences was his desire to help others, develop a positive work environment, and to identify and fulfill client needs.

“Throughout my industry tenure, my goal has consistently been to ensure that hospitality and tourism organizations prioritize the well-being and value of guests but, more importantly, their employees, as this directly affects their ability to provide high-quality service,” Gip said. 

Gip said he is appreciative of the warm welcome and support he has received from members of the department who are renowned in their respective fields and roles.

“The support I’ve received from the department, the College of Agriculture and Life Sciences and Texas A&M in general has been invaluable, and I hope to reflect and embody this support in my research and teaching,” he said. “I plan to use this opportunity to enhance my research, teaching and service with the goal of adding meaningful contributions to the already impressive track record of achievements of the department.”

Hospitality and tourism teaching experience

At the Rosen College of Hospitality Management, Gip was a teaching assistant for multiple undergraduate courses, including Introduction to Hospitality and Tourism, Hospitality and Tourism Marketing and Guest Services Management. He also taught undergraduate human resource management courses for hybrid in-person and online classroom sessions at the Conrad N. Hilton College of Global Hospitality Leadership.

At Texas A&M, he is scheduled to teach Global Communities and Diverse Populations in Hospitality and Tourism in the spring.

‘My teaching philosophy revolves around creating a dynamic classroom community where knowledge is shared between students and myself,” he said. “I aim to blend engaging content with adaptable teaching methods to foster motivation through student-centered project-based learning that promotes engagement and a sense of fun throughout the class.”

Gip said an important goal in his teaching will be to recognize and respect individual differences that can provide new perspectives for classmates and influence student interactions throughout their academic and professional careers.

“This approach promotes fairness, cohesion, reciprocity and honesty in the educator-student relationship and among students, which enhances their education and better prepares them for hospitality careers,” Gip said  “I aspire to make a positive impact and be a part of each student’s success story.”

Further academic activities and affiliations  

In the capacity of invited lecturer or presenter, Gip has shared his recreation and tourism related research on reliability, validity, leadership and effective employee performance management.

He has refereed numerous journal articles and is an editorial board member for the international journal Tourism, Culture and Communication . He also serves as an ad hoc reviewer for the International Journal of Hospitality Management , International Journal of Hospitality and Tourism Administration , Journal of Hospitality and Tourism Management and International Journal of Contemporary Hospitality Managemen t .

At the University of Central Florida, Gip was a member of the National Society of Leadership and Success and the National Association for Catering and Events.
