The focus of Dr. Luna’s lab is to characterize new treatments against antibiotic-resistant bacterial pathogens.

  • Conducts research experiments in accordance with laboratory and safety protocols.
  • Arrange and assemble laboratory reagents, glassware, and equipment for use.
  • Maintains and calibrates laboratory equipment.
  • Maintains accurate laboratory records, stocks and maintains laboratory supplies

GENERAL FUNCTION

The primary duty of the Research Technician II is to develop solutions to complex problems which require the regular application of scientific principles in order to conduct experimental tests and procedures in a research laboratory.   The Research Technician II is a principal contributor in developing specific project requirements from concepts and is responsible for all aspects of their projects from development through delivery, determining the course and the objectives of their projects and the approach to their assignments.  The Research Technician II works independently on research projects as assigned.  The Research Technician II sets up and operates laboratory equipment, prepares materials, performs experimental procedures, records and consolidates research data, and executes planned research activities using observation, measurement, and analytical techniques.  Based on his/her analyses, the Research Technician II prepares reports and presentations of results obtained through experiments.  The Research Technician II helps to assure the validity of research conducted by ensuring the operational condition of scientific equipment through maintenance, operating the equipment, and managing the use of the equipment.

MINIMUM ACCEPTABLE QUALIFICATIONS

Education: A bachelor’s degree in an Applied Science or an appropriate related field is required.

Experience: One year of experience in a research lab environment is required.

Skills: Must be able to demonstrate state-of-the-art knowledge and skills in their technical specialty.  The ability to work independently with minimal supervision on assigned research projects is required.  Must be able to maintain, manage, and repair scientific equipment.  A basic knowledge of Microsoft-based computer programs including some scientific, graphic, and statistical software is required.  Effective interpersonal skills are required. The ability to develop knowledge of, respect for, and skills to engage with those of other cultures or backgrounds is required.

2. Utilizes advanced knowledge of specific scientific protocols to analyze, interpret, and/or make deductions based on data obtained through scientific experimentation. 

3. Utilizes a thorough understanding of specific scientific equipment in order to operate, manage, and maintain scientific equipment to ensure its operational condition to assure validity of data obtained through experimentation.   

4. Collaborates on research projects as assigned that require novel or unique solutions involving new or emerging technology, the evaluation of alternatives and the development of experimental or design plans, making innovative as well as basic measurements, setting up advanced experimental protocols, and/or modifying equipment to obtain unique results .

5. Maintains accurate records of experiments and analysis performed based on specific experiments for a given project, conducts literature searches, and maintains an up-to-date knowledge of all current methods of experimentation through professional reading assignments.

6. Writes reports and presents data based on findings from experiments conducted for assigned projects.

7. Contributes to a work environment that encourages knowledge of, respect for, and development of skills to engage with those of other cultures or backgrounds.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

Advanced Catalysis Research Group RIKEN Center for Sustainable Resource Science (Group Director: Zhaomin Hou)

Research Field

Our group aims to develop new generations of catalysts, which are superior or complementary to the existing ones, for applications in the efficient use of underutilized resources and the synthesis of fine chemicals and functional polymers. Our studies focus on: (1) synthesis of functional polymer materials by copolymerization of two or more monomers having different properties, (2) innovation of organic synthesis based on new catalysts and new reactions, (3) utilization of CO2 as a building block for chemical synthesis, and (4) activation and transformation of small molecules by multimetallic hydrides.

Job description

Rare earth and transition metal catalysts for synthesis of fine chemicals and functional polymers and activation and transformation of small molecules. Receives developmental guidance from supervisor and conducts laboratory research programs.

Qualification

The candidates for postdoctoral researcher should possess a doctoral degree in a related field and research experience using air- and moisture-sensitive organometallic compounds. A person who has obtained a PhD within the past five years, or, one who is able to obtain a degree by the start of their post.

* From the viewpoint of career development at RIKEN Center for Sustainable Resource Science, the tenure as a RIKEN Postdoctoral Researcher is within five years in principle.

RIKEN has implemented a work-from-home system. Employees can work from home in accordance with the prescribed procedures.

Salary and benefits

  • 1. A one-year fixed-term employment contract, renewable based on evaluation, to a maximum of the end of the fiscal year (March 31) in which the employee completes 5 years of employment. (Please note that from the viewpoint of career development, the tenure of a Postdoctoral Researcher at RIKEN will not, in principle, be reappointed for a period exceeding five years.)
  • 2. RIKEN may adjust the above maximum period of renewability based on a) the employee’s abilities, workload at the time of contract completion, performance and work attitude and b) the continuation of the employee’s center, laboratory or project and RIKEN’s management situation and budget at the time. In principle, employment contracts will not be renewed for individuals older than 70 years.

Those who wish to continue working at RIKEN beyond this point may apply for open positions.

In principle, the first two months of employment is considered a trial period. Salary will be an annual salary based on experience, ability, and performance, and will consist of a base salary and a variable salary. The variable salary will be determined each fiscal year based on experience, ability, and performance. The monthly base salary is 305,100 JPY as of April 1, 2024. The monthly base salary and variable salary are subject to change due to amendments to RIKEN regulations.

Discretionary work, commuting and housing allowances will be provided. Social insurance will be applied.

The approximate amount of monthly salary at the time of employment: The monthly salary including discretionary work allowance at the time of employment will be 343,000 JPY or more.

Mandatory membership in the RIKEN Mutual Benefit Society (RIKEN Kyosaikai).

This position falls under the specialized duties discretionary work system; one working day will be calculated as 7 hours and 30 minutes.

Days off include public holidays, New Year's holidays (Dec. 29 - Jan 3), and RIKEN Foundation Day. Paid leave includes annual paid leave (up to 20 days depending on the month of employment), special paid leave (childcare, family nursing care, etc.), and work life balance holidays (up to 7 days depending on the month of employment). There are also additional leave systems such as maternity leave, childcare leave, and family nursing care leave. Smoking will be entirely prohibited on site from April 2024. These and other provisions are in accordance with RIKEN regulations.
