International popstar Rihanna released her first album in 2005 and is known for such No. 1 hits as "Umbrella," "SOS," "Diamonds," and "Work."
Who Is Rihanna?
Popstar Rihanna signed with Def Jam records at age 16 and in 2005 released her first album Music of the Sun , which sold more than two million copies worldwide. She went on to release more albums and an array of hit songs, including "Unfaithful," "Umbrella," "Disturbia," "Take a Bow," "Diamonds" and "We Found Love." A global pop star with an unrelentingly edgy image, Rihanna has also won multiple industry accolades, including Grammys and MTV awards.
Singer Robyn Rihanna Fenty was born on February 20, 1988, in St. Michael Parish on the Caribbean island of Barbados. She is the eldest of three children born to Monica Fenty, an accountant, and Ronald Fenty, a warehouse supervisor. Rihanna's childhood was marred by her father's struggles with addictions to alcohol and crack cocaine and her parents' marital problems — they divorced when she was 14 years old.
Rihanna also struggled with crippling headaches for several years during her childhood, a condition she attempted to hide from her friends and classmates so that they would not think she was abnormal. "I never expressed how I felt," she remembered. "I always kept it in. I would go to school ... you would never know there was something wrong with me."
Move to the United States
As a teenager, Rihanna turned to singing as a release from her troubles at home. She formed a girl group with two classmates; when they were 15 years old, they scored an audition with music producer Evan Rodgers, who was visiting the island with his Barbadian wife. Rogers was awed by the precociously beautiful and talented Rihanna, to the unfortunate detriment of her two friends. "The minute Rihanna walked into the room, it was like the other two girls didn't exist," he admitted.
Less than a year later, when Rihanna was only 16 years old, she left Barbados to move in with Rogers and his wife in Connecticut and work on recording a demo album. "When I left Barbados, I didn't look back," Rihanna recalled. "I wanted to do what I had to do, even if it meant moving to America."
In January 2005, Rogers landed Rihanna an audition for Def Jam Records and its newly minted president, the legendary rapper Jay-Z . "I was in the lobby just shaking," she recalled. However, once Rihanna opened her voice to sing she regained her composure. "I remember staring into everybody's eyes in the room while I was singing, and at that point, I was fearless," she said. "But the minute I stopped singing, I was like, 'Oh my God, Jay-Z is sitting right in front of me.'" The hip-hop icon was every bit as wowed by Rihanna's commanding presence as Rogers had been two years earlier, and he signed her on the spot.
"Pon de Replay," "Unfaithful" and "SOS"
Only eight months later, in August 2005, she released her first single, "Pon de Replay," a reggae-influenced club track that reached No. 2 on the Billboard singles chart and announced Rihanna as the next up-and-coming pop star. Her first album, Music of the Sun , released later that month, reached No. 10 on the Billboard albums chart and also featured the single "If It's Lovin' That You Want." Rihanna released her second album, A Girl Like Me , the next year, spawning two major hits in "Unfaithful" and "SOS," Rihanna's first No. 1 single.
"Umbrella"
In 2007, Rihanna effected a transformation from cute teen pop princess to superstar and sex symbol with her third album, Good Girl Gone Bad , fueled by its smash hit lead single "Umbrella," featuring Jay-Z. "It shows such growth for her as an artist," Jay-Z said about the track. "If you listen to the lyrics to that song, you know the depth and how far she's come."
"Don't Stop the Music," "Disturbia" and "Hate That I Love You"
"Umbrella" topped the Billboard singles chart and earned Rihanna her first Grammy Award for Best Rap/Sung Collaboration. The album reached No. 2 on the charts and also featured the singles "Shut Up and Drive" and "Don't Stop the Music," the latter featuring a sample of Michael Jackson 's "Wanna Be Startin' Somethin'." Good Girl Gone Bad: Reloaded , released the following year, scored further hits in "Disturbia," "Take a Bow" and "Hate That I Love You."
"Only Girl (In the World)" and "S&M"
Continuing her onslaught of hit albums, Rihanna released Rated R in 2009 with the singles "Hard" and "Rude Boy." Her 2010 album, Loud , was once again a commercial success behind the songs "What's My Name," "Only Girl (In the World)" and "S&M."
Besides her own laundry list of hit songs, Rihanna collaborated on a host of popular songs by other artists from around this time, including Jay-Z's "Run this Town," Eminem 's "Love the Way You Lie," Maroon 5's "If I Never See Your Face Again" and Kanye West 's "All of the Lights."
"We Found Love"
In 2011, Rihanna released her sixth studio album: Talk That Talk . The album included "We Found Love," a track with DJ Calvin Harris that won the 2013 Grammy Award for best short-form music video.
"Diamonds" and "Stay"
On her Grammy-winning 2012 album Unapologetic , Rihanna turned out such hits as the No. 1 Sia Furler tune "Diamonds" and "Stay," featuring Mikky Ekko. (Interestingly, Unapologetic was the first Rihanna album to hit No. 1 on the pop charts.) She also worked with Coldplay on the track "Princess of China" and, the following year, reached No. 1 again with another Eminem collaboration, "The Monster."
Known for her sexually provocative imagery and wild style, Rihanna made headlines for the sheer dress she wore to the Council of Fashion Designers of America awards ceremony in June 2014. She was there to receive the CFDA's Fashion Icon Award and told the crowd that "Fashion has always been my defense mechanism," according to an Associated Press report. Rihanna acknowledged that there were some rules to fashion, but explained that "rules are meant to be broken." Around this time, the singer made a bold professional move as well: She switched from the Def Jam label to Jay-Z's Roc Nation.
"FourFiveSeconds"
In August 2015, NBC announced that Rihanna would be the key adviser on The Voice 's ninth season. That same year she contributed vocals to the single "FourFiveSeconds," a collaboration with West and famed Beatle Paul McCartney , as well as releasing "B**** Better Have My Money," a tune allegedly inspired by court wranglings with her former manager that also featured a highly controversial, violent music video. In 2015 Rihanna also became the first artist in history to have 100 million singles digitally downloaded and streamed.
"Work"
In late January 2016, Rihanna released the album Anti , allowing Jay-Z's online streaming site Tidal to exclusively feature the collection of tracks for a week. The gambit paid off for the struggling service, with one million trial subscribers joining Tidal in less than a day to partake in a download promotion for Anti . The album's lead single, "Work," featuring rapper Drake , earned two Grammy nominations. In 2017, Rihanna scored another No. 1 hit as a featured artist on DJ Khaled 's "Wild Thoughts."
Branching out to screen work, Rihanna co-starred in the sci-fi flick Battleship (2012) and later voiced the lead character in the animated blockbuster Home (2015).
In 2017, Rihanna made recurring appearances in season 5 of Bates Motel , and earned a prominent role in the science fiction flick Valerian and the City of a Thousand Planets . That year, fans also got their first glimpse of the pop superstar alongside Sandra Bullock , Cate Blanchett and Anne Hathaway in trailers for Ocean's 8 , a female-led spinoff of the popular Ocean's Trilogy which hit theaters in June 2018.
The following spring, Rihanna co-starred with Donald Glover , aka Childish Gambino, in the Amazon musical Guava Island .
Philanthropy and Personal Life
In 2012, Rihanna launched the nonprofit Clara Lionel Foundation, named after her grandmother, which supports and funds education and early response programs around the world. For her philanthropic efforts, she was honored with the President's Award at the 2020 NAACP Image Awards.
Rihanna has also made headlines in her personal life, although often for circumstances beyond her control. She first made gossip column headlines in 2006 when rumors swirled that she was having an affair with her mentor, Jay-Z, though she and Jay-Z dismissed such allegations as ridiculous. Later, she was romantically linked to billionaire Saudi businessman Hassan Jameel, before their split was reported in early 2020.
In late 2020, Rihanna began dating rapper A$AP Rocky . In January 2022, it was revealed that the couple is expecting their first child.
Chris Brown
In 2009, Rihanna was the center of a media firestorm after a domestic violence incident in which her then-boyfriend Chris Brown assaulted her before an awards show. The incident sparked a huge public outpouring of support for Rihanna, and she became a spokesperson against domestic violence. "This happened to me," she said in an interview with Diane Sawyer. "It can happen to anyone."
"I put my guard up so hard," she said in a separate interview with Rolling Stone . "I didn't want people to see me cry. I didn't want people to feel bad for me. It was a very vulnerable time in my life, and I refused to let that be the image. I wanted them to see me as, 'I'm fine, I'm tough.' I put that up until it felt real."
In 2012, Rihanna appeared to be reconnecting with Brown. The pair worked together on the song "Birthday Cake" released that year. Rihanna also spoke very candidly with Oprah Winfrey about her relationship with Brown that August. She told Winfrey that Brown may have been the love of her life and she has developed "a very close friendship" with him. The two officially dated again for a time, with Rihanna maintaining in a Rolling Stone interview that Brown had changed and that any form of abuse would be unacceptable.

Rihanna’s 30 Greatest Songs, Ranked
Rihanna’s tossed-off vibe and DGAF openness disguise both her musical gifts and remarkable work ethic, borne out in a cascade of hits. Who knew that the young Barbadian singer behind 2005’s “Pon de Replay” would eventually sell more digital singles than any other artist (100 million–plus)? Or that she trails only Elvis, the Beatles and Madonna in Top 10s? Here, in honor of the star’s 30th birthday, we wade through that robust, history-making catalog, taking stock of her best tracks to date.
“Loyalty,” (with Kendrick Lamar) (2017)
This deliriously fun highlight from Kendrick Lamar’s Damn. finds Rihanna flowing in a melodic voice with as much panache as Kung-Fu Kenny himself. Although her rhymes are mostly nonsensical – “On your pulse like a CD in/Gas in the bitch like it’s premium,” she raps – she sounds so charismatic that it hardly matters. “I love everything about her,” Lamar told Beats 1.”Her artistry, how she represents women to not only be themselves but to express themselves the way she expresses herself through music, and how she carries herself.”
“Lemon” (with N.E.R.D.) (2018)
N.E.R.D.’s first single in seven years is politically charged, quoting Gloria Steinem and railing against hate over sparse, bass-heavy grooves. The group’s return, especially as a follow-up to Pharrell’s string of 2010s hits, would have been a big enough story on its own, but the real surprise was the swaggering verse by a most unexpected guest MC: Rihanna, who laid down a boasting verse packed with sly references to various hip-hop legends in a laconic flow. (The track was originally supposed to go to Sean “Diddy” Combs, but N.E.R.D. decided to keep it for themselves.) Thirteen years after her chart debut, the song became Rihanna’s 50th Top 40 hit.
“Man Down” (2010)
“Man Down” is another Rihanna gem that resonated more with her urban R&B audience than her pop acolytes. It finds her plunging deeper into gruff patois accents than any of her singles to date, and serves as a female response to popular reggae dancehall cuts like Chaka Demus & Pliers’ “Murder She Wrote.” “The song is about breaking a man’s heart,” she told Spin . However, the controversial video for “Man Down” expanded the narrative further, depicting Rihanna as a woman who kills a man who raped her. Defending the video, Rihanna explained on the now-cancelled BET show 106 & Park , “We needed to go back to why it happened, because obviously she’s not a cold-blooded killer.”
“Take Care” (with Drake) (2011)
“A lot of the energy we bring is genuine,” Drake said in 2016 of his long and fruitful collaborative history with Rihanna. It sure sounded genuine on “Take Care.” The pair’s on-again, off-again relationship seemed clearly to be in “on” mode when they appeared together on the rapturously vulnerable title track from Drake’s 2011 second album. Producer Noah “40” Shebib flipped a sample of a Gil-Scott Heron remix by Jamie xx, dangling gorgeous stalactite-like guitar sounds over a slow-build Balearic throb. But the real heat comes from the chemistry of the artists at the center of this sublime musical and emotional drama, as they sing about moving beyond old heartaches to negotiate a scary new future together.
“Wild Thoughts” (with DJ Khaled, Bryson Tiller) (2018)
How much history can you fit into one stellar pop hit? DJ Khaled and Canadian songwriter PartyNextDoor sampled a Nineties collaboration between Wyclef Jean and Carlos Santana to create this steamy Latin-tinged jam, in which Rihanna teamed up with trap-soul singer Bryson Tiller. Unsurprisingly, she steals the show with a little old-school New York hip-hop flow (complete with a fly reference to Joe Namath’s Super Bowl champ ’68 Jets). At the 2018 Grammys , the trio deepened that Big Apple connection by performing the song with a set and costumes that alluded to the Harlem Renaissance. Khaled later recalled Facetiming with Rihanna while she recorded her vocal for the song. “She was singing the record on the phone and I was dancing on the phone, she was dancing and we was going back and forth,” he said. Pretty soon, the world would be dancing along, too.
“Hate That I Love You” (feat. Ne-Yo) (2007)
Having co-written Rihanna’s 2006 ballad “Unfaithful” and been dubbed a “genius” by the then–19-year-old in an interview with MTV , Ne-Yo helped craft three tracks on 2007’s titanic Good Girl Gone Bad . None were as big as this Grammy-nominated gem, which updated the soul-duet ideal for the mid-2000s R&B landscape by combining breezy guitars with bittersweet harmonies. “The best way to express an emotion like love is through storytelling,” Ne-Yo told Vibe in 2008 . “It makes it more, ‘I can relate to this character in this song, because I’ve been through something similar.’ … I come from a generation where saying ‘I love you’ is something you say to a girl to take her pants off. But I know the weight of those three words.” M.J.
“Where Have You Been” (2011)
While Geoff Mack’s 1959 outback-country song “I’ve Been Everywhere” has been covered by Johnny Cash and Kacey Musgraves, its most unexpected appearance is probably its interpolation into this Talk That Talk banger, pieced together by the album’s lead co-writer Ester Dean, the hitmaking team of Dr. Luke and Cirkut, and “We Found Love” mastermind Calvin Harris. The pleading, beat-heavy track has one of Rihanna’s more urgent lyrics, her voice bending skyward as the urgency builds into a quick-stepping refrain.
“Pour It Up” (2012)
Produced by Mike Will Will Made It, “Pour It Up” finds Rihanna flexing like a boss in the strip club, tossing dollar bills at the exotic dancers. “Money make the world go round/Bandz make your girl go down,” she growls. In the process, she toys with gender roles. As is often the case for an artist whose music-video savvy rivals Madonna and Beyoncé, the song’s salacious video extends that concept into a beguiling fantasy: She plays both stripper and john, going from working a pole to twerking on top of a gold throne, all while smoking a cigar.
“Take a Bow” (2008)
Rihanna’s 2007 LP Good Girl Gone Bad was such an such an enormous success thanks to “Umbrella,” “Shut Up and Drive” and “Don’t Stop The Music” that one year after it hit stores it was re-released as Good Girl Gone Bad: Reloaded , featuring three brand new songs. The leadoff single was “Take a Bow,” written by the Norwegian duo Stargate and Ne-Yo. It was the exact same team that created Beyoncé’s “Irreplaceable” and they struck gold again with “Take a Bow,” which made Billboard history by leaping from Number 53 to Number One in a single week. It was an unambiguous sign, not that anyone needed it, that Rihanna wasn’t going anywhere for a long, long time.
“Rude Boy” (2009)
There was a lot of pressure in late 2009 when Rihanna dropped Rated R , her followup to the juggernaut that was Good Girl Gone Bad . For a short time it seemed like the project might underwhelm when early singles “Russian Roulette,” “Hard” and “Wait Your Turn” failed to become “Umbrella”-like mega-hits. But then in February of 2010, “Rude Boy” hit the airwaves. The dancehall song was the work of small army of songwriters, including Stargate, Ester Dean, Makeba Riddick, Rob Swire and Rihanna herself, and it quickly shot to Number One on the Hot 100 and stayed there for five straight weeks. No other song from the album was nearly as successful.
“Kiss It Better” (2016)
In late 2014, Rihanna posted a short video of her then-guitarist Nuno Bettencourt to Instagram ; he was laying down a juicy solo over a recording of her singing “kiss it, kiss it better, baby,” sparking speculation that the star’s eighth album was, if not imminent, at least on the way. While it would be more than a year before Anti would arrive, the sinuous track – which Rihanna co-wrote with Jeff Bhasker, Glass John and Teddy “Natalia Kills” Sinclair – was one of the album’s most satisfying swerves, with Bettencourt’s power-ballad–worthy guitar line weaving in and out of dreamy, synth-y R&B and Rihanna delivering a no-nonsense, highly emotional ultimatum to a lover.
“Disturbia” (2008)
Goth Rihanna steps into the darkness with her summer-of-’08 hit “Disturbia” – a prescient sign of how twisted she could get. The lyrics could come straight from an early Black Sabbath record, yet it bumps and grinds with a beat engineered for the dance floor. Over that eerie disco chant of “bum-bum be-dum-bum-bum,” Rihanna sings about feeling her brain get consumed by paranoid hallucinations, asking, “What’s wrong with me? Why do I feel like this?” By the chorus, she’s the star of her own horror flick: “Am I scaring you tonight?/Your mind is in Disturbia!” It’s a song where staring at the phone waiting for it to ring turns into a full-blown mental breakdown. “Disturbia” was written by then-boyfriend Chris Brown, before his violently abusive side went public. But it became the most futuristic of her early hits, opening up the darker places she’d keep exploring in her music.
“S&M” (2010)
“Sticks and stones may break my bones but chains and whips excite me,” Rihanna sings cheerily on this Number One hit, featuring distorted and bouncy electro keyboard lines and lyrics written by Ester Dean. Arriving a little over a year after former boyfriend Chris Brown’s vicious assault on her, “S&M” is a brave assertion of agency in the face of global public scrutiny. “People are going to talk about you, you can’t stop that. You just have to be super-strong and know who you are so that stuff just bounces off,” she told Spin that year. The overall theme? Rihanna does what she wants, and no one can stop her. “It’s so good being bad,” she coos. “There’s no way I’m turning back.”
“What’s My Name” (feat. Drake) (2010)
Rihanna’s on-off relationship with Drake has made for rich tabloid fodder ever since the Canadian rapper added a verse to this Number One hit. “What’s My Name?” was originally cut from her 2009 album Rated R ; but as his star rose, the StarGate and Kuk Harrell–produced remix of what was originally a solo Rihanna showcase eventually appeared on to 2010’s Loud . “Drake is the hottest rapper out right now and we’ve always been trying to work together,” Rihanna told Billboard that year. In fact, it’s Drake’s voice we hear after the chorus: “Yeah, I heard you good with those soft lips/Yeah, you know word of mouth.” She responds in kind: “Not everybody knows how to work my body/Knows how to make me want it/But boy you stay up on it.” It’s a whirlwind of mutual flirtation they’ve kept alive ever since.
“Bitch Better Have My Money” (2015)
From a pop standpoint, this non-album track was a relative failure, stalling at Number 15 on the Hot 100. But “Bitch Better Have My Money” – which reprises a phrase from AMG’s 1991 gigolo hit “Bitch Betta Have My Money” – was a huge anthem among her core R&B fans, and reasserted Rihanna’s cross-cultural appeal as well as her ability to swag as hard as anyone. “We were just vibing with [producer] Deputy in one of the local studios I record out of,” Bibi Bourelly, who conceived the song, told Noisey . “He played me [the beat], I went in and started saying something like ‘Bitch Better Have My Money!’, because I was feeling ratchet that day.” (The final version of the track credits nearly a dozen songwriters and producers, including Rihanna herself.)
“SOS” (2006)
In 2006, Rihanna was still a teen pop starlet finding her footing. Her first two singles – “Pon de Replay” and “If It’s Lovin’ That You Want” – along with debut album Music of the Sun were a strong but not explosive introduction to the star who would go on to break chart records for more than a decade. The “Tainted Love”-sampling dance-pop smash “SOS” would become her first Number One hit, giving a taste of her ability to dominate the clubs with shimmery, aspirational earworms.
“Work” (feat. Drake) (2016)
In 2016, American audiences went crazy for Caribbean music again, and Rihanna was at the center of the trend: Her and Drake’s sinuous dancehall homage “Work” was one of the year’s defining tracks. “This song is definitely a song that represents my culture, so I had to put a little twist on my delivery,” Rihanna told Vogue in regards to the imaginative vocalese she weaves throughout the chorus. “Because I felt like if I enunciated the words too perfectly, it would just not be the same attitude or the same sass. Because that’s how we speak in the Caribbean.” Despite the song’s hypnotic and sexy vibe, the lyrics describe about a woman who’s burnt out from the “work” she has to put into a relationship. “People think that’s a party song. It’s a breakup song,” Partynextdoor, who wrote the lyrics, told RS . “It’s blues. I went from braggadocious to blues.”
“Stay” (feat. Mikky Ekko) (2012)
By the time Rihanna released Unapologetic , ballads were hardly new territory for her. But something about her piano-driven display of utter vulnerability on “Stay” makes the song one of her most emotionally provocative performances to date. Newcomer Mikky Ekko served as the singer’s perfectly matched duet partner as they detail the two sides of a pair fighting to keep a relationship together. Co-written by Justin Parker, who was behind the similarly emotional balladry of Lana Del Rey’s early tracks like “Video Games” and “Ride,” the track finds success in its simplicity, setting the stage for her stripped-down follow-up album, Anti .
“This Is What You Came For” (with Calvin Harris) (2016)
“This Is What You Came For” is the closest we’ve gotten to a Rihanna–Taylor Swift mashup. The third collaboration between Rihanna and Calvin Harris, five years after “We Found Love,” the track is a more subdued effort from the pair – thanks to softer, manipulated vocals and a blend of traditional EDM, tropical and Chicago-house elements. A “nervous” Harris played the final cut to Rihanna at Coachella 2016. “I changed so many bits from when she first heard it,” Harris said at the time. “She was into it.” Rihanna nearly got pulled into Harris’ summer 2016 beef with ex-girlfriend Swift, when it was later confirmed that she co-wrote the smash under her pseudonym Nils Sjöberg, and even sings a bit during the chorus. After it was suggested that he failed to give Swift due credit, Harris lashed out in a since-deleted Twitter rant. “I wrote the music, produced the song, arranged it and cut the vocals. And initially she wanted it kept secret, hence the pseudonym.” So much drama (none of it Rihanna’s) for such a blissed-out earworm.
“All of the Lights” (with Kanye West, Kid Cudi) (2010)
Kanye West’s grandiose My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy cut features an all-star choir that includes the likes of Elton John, John Legend and Drake – but only Rihanna ranked as a featured vocalist, thanks to her smoldering performance of the track’s anthemic chorus. Her appearance stemmed from a late-night summoning to the studio: “[Kanye] actually played his album to me, like, three months ago, and ‘All of the Lights,’ that was one of my favorite songs,” Rihanna told MTV in 2010 , shortly after the song leaked online in advance of Fantasy ‘s release. “So when he asked me to come up to the studio at 2 o’clock in the morning, I had to, because I loved it. I knew it was that song.”
“Needed Me” (2016)
If anyone was still in doubt about Ms. Fenty’s zero-tolerance policy toward the male of the species, “Needed Me” set them straight – it’s the coldest, toughest, meanest of her sexual unfollows. You might have to go back to vintage Mick Jagger to find an erotic conquistador this ruthless, as she mocks a jilted fling for being dumb enough to fall in love with her, “trying to fix your inner issues with a bad bitch.” While DJ Mustard pumps up the hardest of West Coast hip-hop bass, Ri asks her latest victim, “Didn’t they tell you I was a savage?/Fuck your white horse and your carriage.” Harmony Korine directed the controversial (and definitely NSFW) video, where Rihanna struts into a strip club to face the thug who made the mistake of pissing her off. He tosses her a wad of Benjamins; she makes it rain bullets. Not her first man-killing video, and probably not her last.
“Don’t Stop the Music” (2007)
It’s a global dance-pop smash, produced by a couple Norwegian guys (Stargate) that hits a high point referencing a historic vocal line from a 1983 Michael Jackson classic (“Wanna Be Startin’ Somethin'”) that was itself a reference to an early-Seventies jam from Cameroon (Manu Dibango’s “Soul Makossa”). In other words, classic Rihanna: effortlessly gathering the whole world into her vision of sweat-caked, face-to-face, hands-on-your-waist disco elation. She asked Jackson’s permission to borrow the iconic “Mama-say, mama-sa, ma-ma-ko-ssa” hook for “Don’t Stop the Music” and the resulting song ended up being a massive global hit, with a video in which RiRi breaks through a secret door in the back of a candy store into a crazy club where she shakes her stress away.
“Pon de Replay” (2005)
If you heard Rihanna’s debut single in 2005, you’re forgiven for initially dismissing her as part of a Caribbean-tinged pop wave that included Lumidee’s “Never Leave You (Uh Ooh, Uh Ooh)” (which, like “Pon de Replay,” also relied on Lenky Marsden’s Diwali riddim) and Nina Sky’s “Move Your Body.” Originating as an Evan Rogers–produced demo that secured the teenage Rihanna’s deal with Def Jam, the track offered some evidence that the Barbados-born singer might end up outpacing her contemporaries. Her voice sounds distinctively bright and confident – check out the way she chants “everybody run” on the verses, then shifts to flat-out singing near the track’s end – and her unique tone already stood out. That year, she told MTV News , “I can’t tell you where I’ll see myself in five years, but I can tell you I will work my best to be the most successful artist that I can be.”
“Love the Way You Lie” (with Eminem) (2010)
Rihanna spent years addressing her abusive, tempestuous relationship with Chris Brown through her music, but it was her Eminem collaboration “Love the Way You Lie” that became her most provocative statement in the aftermath. Detailing the love-hate games that lock people into various forms of abusive romantic partnerships, Eminem and Rihanna give brazen performances as lovers scorned and burned by their own mix of fear and stubbornness. Rihanna would release a solo take on the song, “Love the Way You Lie (Part II),” that offered an even more vulnerable take on the song’s message.
“Only Girl (in the World)” (2010)
“Only Girl (in The World)” was one of four Number Ones Rihanna scored in 2010 (the others being “Rude Boy,” “What’s My Name” and Eminem’s “Love the Way You Lie”). But with producers StarGate, Sandy Vee and Kuk Harrell’s Europop keyboard lines and stomping progressive house beat, this was arguably the single that certified Rihanna as the queen of the EDM era. She stretches her voice an octave or two to match the soaring production and depicts a deliriously enticing nightlife scene: This girl is with you , and she wants to be your only one. Yet it’s her unique Barbadian lilt that makes her more than an anonymous club queen, and that personality isn’t buried by this intentionally histrionic, over-the-top Electric Daisy Carnival hit.
“Diamonds” (2012)
Rihanna’s greatest attribute has long been her adaptability: She can swagger and belt her way through any EDM, R&B or rap song while making it entirely her own. After a series of club hits, she switched gears with this luscious, opulent Sia-penned power ballad. On the track, which would become her 12th Number One, Rih showed off her often underrated vocal abilities that had frequently been overpowered by booming, ornate EDM production. “Diamonds” still stands as one of her most stirring and uplifting hits.
“FourFiveSeconds” (with Paul McCartney, Kanye West) (2015)
In the Eighties, Paul McCartney introduced himself to a whole new generation of fans by duetting with Michael Jackson on “Say Say Say.” He wouldn’t pull another cross-generational stunt like that with any real success until 2015 when he found himself collaborating with Rihanna and Kanye West on “FourFiveSeconds.” Kanye spearheaded the unlikely project since he was working with Rihanna on her new album Anti and had developed a friendship with McCartney, teaming up with him on the 2014 track “Only One.” Built around Paul’s acoustic guitar lick, “FourFiveSeconds” is unlike anything in the catalogs of either Rihanna or Macca. It gave the former Beatle his first Top Five hit in 31 years. He continues to play it at all of his solo shows.
“Love on the Brain” (2016)
“I think a lot of people have a misperception of me,” Rihanna told Kanye West in a 2010 chat for Interview . “They only see the tough, defensive, aggressive side. But every woman is vulnerable. They have vulnerability. So of course I’m going to have that side.” Anti featured multiple instances of her at her most vulnerable, but none tore the house down more than this neoclassic soul track, in which she alternates between her falsetto and torch-singer range over a deliberate, slow-dance–ready arrangement. “We wanted the song to be old school – a mix between Prince and Al Green,” co-writer Fred Ball told Genius . “We wanted it to have that juxtaposition of an old-school soul feel with modern lyrics.” Ball and co-writer Joseph Angel didn’t write the track with Rih in mind, but it wound up fitting in perfectly with Anti’s tender side.
“Umbrella” (feat. Jay-Z) (2007)
Thank Britney Spears for the song that changed everything for Rihanna: The “Toxic” singer’s label turned down what would become a megahit for the Barbadian star, transforming her into a full-fledged pop heavyweight. Co-written by Tricky Stewart, Kuk Harrell and The-Dream, the song is a unique piece of music: a song that marries a heavy rock undercurrent to vibrant rhythm guitar and a perfectly catchy R&B-pop hook. The song ended up being Rihanna’s first Grammy win and a Number One hit in many countries — but at a price. Many claimed there was a “Rihanna curse” as the U.K., New Zealand and Romania were hit with heavy storms as soon as the single topped the charts in each country.
“We Found Love” (feat. Calvin Harris) (2010)
The original Calvin Harris demo for this rave epic floated around for months: Leona Lewis recorded a version but didn’t release it, and Nicole Scherzinger rejected it, before Rihanna turned it into a global phenomenon that topped the Billboard Hot 100 for 10 weeks. “I slept on it,” Scherzinger admitted to U.K. magazine Notion in 2013. But in all fairness to the former Pussycat Doll, no one could have brought the same Technicolor joie de vivre to this big room extravaganza as Rihanna, whose near-falsetto voice summons peak-time memories on the dance floor. The chorus – “We found love in a hopeless place” – got a literal interpretation in Melina Matsuoka’s controversial video, which found Rihanna lost in a tumultuous and toxic relationship.

About rihanna.
A true pop icon, Robyn “Rihanna” Fenty is a singer, actress, and businesswoman from Saint Michael, Barbados. She was first discovered by American record producer Evan Rogers in 2003 and later signed a contract to Def Jam Recordings in 2004, after auditioning for its then-president, JAY-Z .
The following year, in 2005, she released her debut album Music of the Sun and its follow-up, A Girl Like Me , in 2006. Both albums did well commercially, but it wasn’t until the release of her third album, Good Girl Gone Bad , in 2007 that poised Rihanna as an international pop star. It became her first album to receive a Grammy nomination (seven to be exact) and features one of her biggest hits, “Umbrella.”
Moving onto 2009, Rihanna released her fourth studio album, Rated R . It featured a darker and more atmospheric tone from her previous albums. She released her fifth studio album, Loud , the next year in 2010. It marked her return to making dance-pop records. That summer, she featured on Eminem ’s smash hit, “Love the Way You Lie” and is one of her most popular features of all time.
Rihanna continued her album streak in 2011 when she released her sixth studio album, Talk That Talk . It’s lead-single, “We Found Love,” became her biggest hit to date, topping the Billboard Hot 100 for ten weeks. The next year, in 2012, she released her seventh studio album, Unapologetic .
2013 ended Rihanna’s three-year album streak, taking a short break from recording music. Instead, she featured on songs like Wale ’s “Bad (Remix)” and Eminem’s “The Monster.” The following year, in 2014, Rihanna left Def Jam Recordings to sign fully with JAY-Z’s Roc Nation.
2015 saw Rihanna’s return to making solo music, releasing singles like “FourFiveSeconds,” “Bitch Better Have My Money” and “American Oxygen.” The following year, in 2016, she released her eighth studio album ANTI .
In 2017, Rihanna featured on a few hit songs like Kendrick Lamar ’s “LOYALTY.” and DJ Khaled ’s “Wild Thoughts.” That same year, she announced she began working on her ninth studio album, although a proper release date has yet to be announced.
With all her hard work, Rihanna has become one of the most awarded artists in history, winning 214 in total. Of these awards include nine Grammy Awards, twelve Billboard Music Awards, thirteen American Music Awards, and seven MTV Video Music Awards.
Aside from music, Rihanna has ventured into other affairs like acting, starring in big movies like Ocean’s 8 , This Is the End , Battleship , and the animated cartoon, Home . Rih also launched the highly successful cosmetics brand, Fenty Beauty , in 2017 and was also appointed as an Ambassador of Barbados in 2018.

Rihanna (born February 20, 1988, St. Michael parish, Barbados) is a Barbadian pop and rhythm-and-blues (R&B) singer who became a worldwide star in the early 21st century. She is known for her distinctive and versatile voice and for her fashionable appearance. She is also known for her beauty and fashion lines.
Fenty grew up in Barbados with a Barbadian father and a Guyanese mother. As a child, she listened to Caribbean music , such as reggae , as well as American hip-hop and R&B. She especially enjoyed singing and won a high-school talent show with a rendition of a Mariah Carey song. About the same time, she started a girl group with two friends, and in 2004 she attracted the attention of Evan Rogers, an American record producer. He helped Fenty record a demo that led to an audition with the rapper Jay-Z , who at the time headed the Def Jam record label, and he soon signed the budding vocalist. For her professional career, she adopted her middle name, Rihanna.
With the effervescent dancehall -inflected single “Pon de Replay” (2005), Rihanna immediately captured an international audience. The song’s success buoyed sales for her debut full-length recording, Music of the Sun (2005), on which conventional R&B ballads shared space with Caribbean-flavored dance-pop that showcased her melodious Barbadian lilt. Rihanna soon followed with the album A Girl Like Me (2006), featuring the up-tempo club-oriented “S.O.S.” The song, which was built around a sample of Soft Cell ’s 1981 new-wave hit “Tainted Love,” became Rihanna’s first to top the Billboard singles chart.
For Good Girl Gone Bad (2007), Rihanna sought to transform her youthful image. With the assistance of such high-profile collaborators as Timbaland and Justin Timberlake , she abandoned the tropical rhythms that had adorned her first two albums and recorded a collection of sleek R&B that presented her as a fiercely independent and rebellious woman. (She also unveiled a spiky asymmetrical hairstyle.) The gambit paid off, as the album sold several million copies worldwide, and its anthemic lead single, “ Umbrella,” featuring an introductory rap from Jay-Z, became one of the year’s biggest hits and earned Rihanna a Grammy Award .
In early 2009 Rihanna was beaten by her boyfriend, fellow R&B star Chris Brown , in an incident that was widely covered by tabloid news and gossip blogs. Following their separation, he was convicted of assault. The album that followed later that year, Rated R , much of which she cowrote, was marked by icily stark production and brooding lyrics that touched on revenge. Although her sales declined somewhat, she scored another major hit with “Rude Boy.” Rihanna returned to less-portentous fare on the dance-friendly Loud (2010). In early 2011 the album’s sexually provocative single “S&M” became her 10th number one Billboard hit—which made her, at age 23, the youngest artist ever to reach that milestone. Included in the total were prominent collaborations with hip-hop artists T.I. and Eminem that appeared on albums of theirs; many felt her vocals on the latter’s “Love the Way You Lie” (2010) lent resonance to the song’s depiction of an abusive relationship.
Rihanna maintained a steely and seductive persona on the albums Talk That Talk (2011), which produced the infectious international hit “We Found Love,” and Unapologetic (2012), which was anchored by the starry-eyed “Diamonds.” The latter release also controversially featured a duet with Brown, with whom she rekindled her relationship for a brief time. Her eighth studio album, Anti , was released in 2016. Rihanna began working on a new record, but the project was delayed as she took a break from music. However, she later cowrote and performed “Lift Me Up” for the film Black Panther: Wakanda Forever (2022). For her work on the single, Rihanna received her first Academy Award nomination, for best original song. In 2023 she returned to the stage for the first time in some four years, performing at the Super Bowl halftime show.
In addition to her musical career, Rihanna acted in the movies Battleship (2012) and This Is the End (2013). She also voiced one of the main characters in the animated adventure Home (2015). Rihanna later appeared as a hacker in Ocean’s 8 (2018), a female-driven reboot of the Ocean’s Eleven franchise from the early 2000s. In 2019 she starred with Donald Glover in the musical Guava Island ; it premiered at the Coachella Valley Festival before streaming on Amazon .
After collaborating on several cosmetics collections in the early 2010s, Rihanna launched her own line, Fenty Beauty, in 2017. The brand was enthusiastically embraced by fans and was praised for its inclusivity in offering 40 different shades of foundation. She later launched (2018) Savage X Fenty, a clothing line of lingerie and loungewear. In 2019 it was announced that Rihanna was partnering with LVMH Moët Hennessy—Louis Vuitton to create the fashion line Fenty. She thereby became the first woman of color to head a fashion house at LVMH, which was the largest luxury-products company in the world. Fenty’s first collection was released later that year. However, the line struggled, and in 2021 it was announced that Fenty was being paused “pending better conditions.”
Rihanna’s personal life attracted intense media attention. Her tumultuous relationship with Brown, especially the 2009 domestic violence incident, was fodder for the tabloids. She later dated Canadian rapper Drake . In 2021 it was confirmed that Rihanna was in a relationship with rapper A$AP Rocky. The couple welcomed a baby boy the following year. In 2023 Rihanna revealed she was again pregnant by performing at the Super Bowl halftime show with a visible baby bump; her representatives subsequently confirmed that the singer was expecting her second child. In August that year Rihanna gave birth to her second son.

Rihanna's epic career timeline: From iconic music to Fenty 🎶
She's the new face of J'adore!
Queen Riri...where to begin! Born on 20th February 1988, fresh-faced Robyn Rihanna Fenty was just 16-years-old she began her journey to super-stardom. Since then, she's proven to us all that the sky is the limit when it comes to her talents, even performing at the Super Bowl 2023 while pregnant with her second baby - who she welcomed later in the year!
From singing to songwriting, collaborating to hit-making , acting to make-up , there's no limit to what this mum can do! As the world patiently waits for her "worth the wait" ninth album , the singer made her music comeback with 'Lift Me Up' in 2022, which was the lead single from Marvel's Black Panther: Wakanda Forever - and earned Rihanna her first ever Oscar nomination.
In order to celebrate Rihanna becoming the new face of Dior's J'adore perfume, we've taken the liberty of gathering together all of RiRi's biggest career moments, from early days to now - you know, just in case you missed them...
Rihanna's biggest career moments so far:
2005: first signing.
In 2005, Rihanna was discovered by American record producer Evan Rogers in her home country of Barbados. The 16-year-old's demo was then sent to Def Jam Recordings, where it was played to the company's new CEO Jay-Z. Jay-Z invited Rihanna to audition and RiRi left the audition with a six album record deal... easy as that!
2005: 'Pon de Replay'
It wasn't long before RiRi then released her first album 'Music of the Sun', which sold over two million copies worldwide. It was then in May 2005 the world was graced with the anthem that is 'Pon de Replay' - meaning 'play it again' in Bajan Creole, one of the official languages of Rihanna's home country Barbados. The track had appeared on her original demo that landed her that record deal. The song sold a whopping two million copies, charting top 10 in the UK, US and across the globe.
2006: Ri's first Number 1 single
2006 saw the release of Rihanna's second studio album 'A Girl Like Me', containing bangers such as 'Unfaithful' and 'We Ride'. The album also featured what became her first ever number 1 single 'SOS'.
2007: 'Good Girl Gone Bad'
2007 saw Rihanna go from teen-popstar to legendary icon. With the release of the chart topping hit 'Umbrella', RiRi showcased her new, sleek look that has been described by critics as a turning point in her career. The star well and truly ditched her innocent teen look, opting for an edgier, bad girl vibe.
2008: Rihanna's first grammy
After receiving four nominations for the 2008 GRAMMYs, including 'Best R & B Performance by a Duo or Group with Vocals', 'Record of the Year' and 'Best Dance Recording', Rihanna walked away from the annual award ceremony the winner of the 'Best Rap/Sung Performance' award - her first ever GRAMMY crown!
2009: 'Rated R'
2009 warmly welcomed the hard-hitting album 'Rated R', including hits such as 'Rude Boy', 'Te Amo' and 'Russian Roulette'. The mature album reflected on the star's recent struggles and was described by critics as her most layered and heartfelt effort.
2010: 'LOUD'
Now 2010 was quite the year for this superstar; after ditching her signature dark hair, the star opted for a vibrant red do. Oh, and she also released her fifth studio album 'Loud' that landed her her first ever GRAMMY nomination for 'Album of the Year', featuring her and Drizzy Drake collab for the first time ever. The legendary collab 'What's My Name' featured on the album alongside 'S & M', 'Only Girl (In The World)' and 'Love The Way You Lie (Part II)'. Since then, Rihanna and Drake have gone on to team up on multiple other tunes, including 'Take Care'.
2011: 'We Found Love'
In 2011 the world welcomed with open arms one of Rihanna's most iconic songs 'We Found Love'. Featuring on her sixth studio album 'Talk That Talk', the star teamed up with Scottish DJ Calvin Harris to produce this, how do you say it... masterpiece. Other than becoming a staple song at any teen disco and/or house-party, the song went on to win the singer awards for 'Best R & B/Urban Dance Track', 'Best Commercial/Pop Dance Track', 'Video Of The Year' and 'Best Short Form Music Video'. WOWZA.
2012: Acting career begins with Battleship
Queen Ri's talent didn't stop there. In 2012 the Barbadian beauty made her big screen debut in summer blockbuster 'Battleship' as Petty Officer Cora Raikes. This lead to her winning the Teen Choice Award for 'Choice Movie Breakout Star - Female'.
2012: First number 1 album
That same year (2017) Rihanna's seventh studio album 'Unapologetic' became her first No. 1 album, winning her the GRAMMY for 'Best Urban Contemporary Album' in January 2014. The album boasts hit tracks such as 'Diamonds' and 'What Now'. Also featured on the album was the incredible 'Stay', which after being released as a single from the album made no. 1 in Bulgaria, Canada, the Czech Republic and Denmark, as well as charting in the Top 5 in the UK, Australia, France, Germany, New Zealand, Norway and Switzerland.

2014 saw the superstar named the creative director of, and a brand ambassador for, Puma. These roles lead to her launching the 'Fenty x Puma' range, responsible for fashion trends such as fur sliders and suede creepers.
2016: 'Anti'
After three years of waiting, fans were not disappointed with Rihanna's surprise release of 'Anti' - her eighth studio album. Shooting to number 1 just two weeks after its initial debut, going on to spend 159 weeks on the Billboard Hot 200. 'Anti' graced us with hits such as 'Work', 'Kiss It Better' and 'Love on the Brain'.

The fabulous life of Rihanna, from her Barbados roots to the Super Bowl, and Fenty Beauty's game-changing role in makeup
- Rihanna is one of the most influential artists of her generation.
- Among other achievements, she has 14 No. 1 songs and nine Grammy Awards.
- She has also made her mark as a humanitarian, entrepreneur, and makeup mogul.
At just 35 years old, Rihanna has already achieved icon status.
Over the course of her relatively short career, Rihanna has positioned herself as one of the most influential artists of her generation. She is the most successful artist in the history of Billboard's Pop Songs Chart — not to mention her already-lasting mark as a humanitarian, entrepreneur, and makeup mogul.
Here's a complete timeline of Rihanna's biggest achievements and most iconic moments.
As a child in Barbados, Rihanna reportedly used music to escape from "anxieties of a violent home life."
Rihanna — born Robyn Rihanna Fenty on February 20, 1988 — was raised in Barbados. She has said that growing up, her father was addicted to drugs and physically abusive towards her mother .
She has also joked that she " annoyed every one of [her] neighbors," and her mom referred to her voice as an "annoying little husky man voice."
Record producer Evan Rogers met Rihanna in 2003, while he was vacationing in Barbados with his wife . The 15-year-old singer told Rogers that being in the music business was "all I've ever wanted to do." She had no formal training in music or dance, but Rogers remembers her remarkable "presence."
"It was more likely a much more urgent need to escape from the anxieties of a violent home life into the illusion of security and boundless love that a life onstage seemed to offer," he told John Seabrook, as recounted in his book "The Song Machine."
"That desire, more than any inborn talent, is what fans will connect to, and that is what record men look for in a new artist. It's the one thing they can't manufacture."
Rihanna signed to Def Jam in 2005. She was taken under the wing of the label's then-president, Jay-Z.
In December 2004, Rihanna recorded the Caribbean jam "Pon de Replay" and sent the song off to several record labels .
In early 2005, a then-16-year-old Rihanna flew to New York City to audition for Def Jam's newly appointed president and CEO, Jay-Z . According to a 2007 interview with The Guardian , she sang a Whitney Houston cover ("For the Love of You") and two originals, one being "Pon de Replay."
"I was like, 'Oh God, he's right there, I can't look, I can't look, I can't look!'" she told The Guardian. "I remember being extremely quiet. I was very shy. I was cold the entire time. I had butterflies. I'm sitting across from Jay-Z. Like, Jay-Z. I was star-struck."
"The audition definitely went well," she continued. "Jay-Z said, 'There's only two ways out. Out the door after you sign this deal. Or through this window.' And we were on the 29th floor. Very flattering."
Rihanna's debut single "Pon de Replay" was an immediate hit.
The studio version of "Pon de Replay" was released in May 2005. The dance-pop, reggae-infused track hit No. 2 on the Billboard Hot 100 when Rihanna was just 17 years old.
One year later, in May 2006, she scored her first No. 1 single.
"S.O.S." was the debut single from Rihanna's sophomore album, "A Girl Like Me." It reached the top of the Billboard Hot 100 three months after its release on Valentine's Day and maintained its reign for three consecutive weeks.
The game-changing track "Umbrella" was released on March 29, 2007.
As Billboard's Joe Lynch writes, when "Umbrella (feat. Jay-Z)" dropped , "Rihanna already had two albums and four top 10 Billboard Hot 100 hits under her belt. But for a burgeoning pop icon, she was short just one thing: An instantly iconic pop smash that would prove she was in it for the long game."
"'Umbrella' was that ubiquitous smash," Lynch writes, "an inescapable hit that hit No. 1, soundtracked the summer of 2017 and introduced Bad Gal RiRi to your mom, dad, grandma, grandpa…basically, anyone with a set of ears."
She took home her first Grammy Award in 2008.
Rihanna earned four nominations for the 50th annual Grammy Awards , which was the first time she was recognized by the Recording Academy.
On February 10, 2008, Rihanna and Jay-Z took home the trophy for best rap/sung collaboration. Their smash hit "Umbrella" was also nominated for record of the year, but lost to "Rehab" by Amy Winehouse.
She collaborated with Drake for the first time in 2010.
Just months after they sparked reports of a romance , Rihanna and Drake debuted their first collaborative track, "What's My Name?"
The steamy track was released as the second single from Rihanna's fifth studio album on October 26, 2010. It peaked at No. 1 and even earned the duo a Grammy nomination for best rap/sung collaboration. (It lost, but to another Rihanna song: her 2010 collaboration with Kanye West , "All of the Lights").
"What's My Name?" is especially notable for marking the beginning of the duo's beloved creative relationship , which would later yield hit songs like "Take Care" and "Work."
Rihanna's fifth studio album "Loud" earned her first Grammy nomination for album of the year.
"Loud" was released on November 12, 2010, and spawned three No. 1 songs: "What's My Name?," "Only Girl," and "S&M."
"Loud" earned Rihanna her first and, to date, only Grammy nomination for album of the year , the show's most coveted award. It lost to Adele's "21."
She made her big screen debut with "Battleship" in May 2012.
The summer blockbuster "Battleship" was loosely based on the board game of the same name. It was critically panned , but praise-worthy for Rihanna's big screen debut — for which she was chosen specifically by the film's director, Peter Berg .
"Her videos are super hot and I'd watched them a lot. It clicked for me though after she got assaulted and she went on Diane Sawyer's show and talked very frankly about that night and what happened," Berg told GQ, referring to Rihanna's 2009 assault by then-boyfriend Chris Brown .
"She was so intelligent and articulate," he continued. "I remember thinking, 'Wow. There's much more to this woman than I'd thought.' I then saw her do this stupid little skit on 'Saturday Night Live' where she was in a classroom giving a hard time to these boys. She was funny as all hell! I knew in that moment that the girl could act. No question."
In November 2012, "Unapologetic" became Rihanna's first No. 1 album.
Rihanna's seventh studio album shot to the top of the Billboard 200, becoming Rihanna's first No. 1 album , and won the Grammy for best urban contemporary album on January 26, 2014.
The album's "stark, shadowy R&B," wrote Rolling Stone's Jon Dolan , "is confrontationally honest and sung within an inch of its life, whether she's turning a strip-club anthem into a declaration of independence ('Pour It Out') or pleading at the piano ('Stay')."
Rihanna was given the American Music Awards' first-ever Icon Award in 2013.
The 2013 American Music Awards hailed Rihanna as " the voice of our time" (Bill Maher's words) and the best-selling digital artist of all time (Nielsen's official title).
After performing the "Unapologetic" hit single "Diamonds," Rihanna was presented with the first-ever Icon Award by her mother, Monica Braithwaite.
"I know the journey and your career has not always been an easy one," Braithwaite said, according to Rolling Stone . "But tonight, I applaud and admire you for being so strong and so positive and so humble and so focused. I'm so blessed to be part of this historic moment."
She received the CFDA Fashion Icon award in 2014.
Rihanna walked the 2014 Council of Fashion Designers of America (CFDA) red carpet in a sparkling, sheer gown and little else. But when asked about the daring fashion choice, she laughed it off in a classic Rihanna style: "Do my tits bother you? They're covered in Swarovksi crystals, girl!"
Rihanna was named the creative director of Puma in 2014.
As reported by Time , Rihanna was tapped to oversee a women's line of clothing for Puma, focusing on fitness and training clothes.
"It really came from her," Adam Petrick, Puma's global brand and marketing director, told The New York Times . "Though we originally started talking about it in terms of advertising, she wanted to express herself in this way. They said to us, 'We can change the face of the brand from a product perspective.'" She did not just want to be a "face."
She was also named a "brand ambassador" for the company, alongside star athletes like Usain Bolt.
The role ultimately led to Rihanna's Fenty x Puma venture, which has yielded fashion moments like the award-winning suede Creepers, iconic fur sliders, and haute-couture athleisure.
Rihanna dropped her most celebrated album yet, "Anti," on January 28, 2016.
Rihanna's eighth studio album "Anti" was surprise-released after three years of anticipation. It was unlike anything the pop star had ever released . It went to No. 1 two weeks after its debut (stalled by a Tidal-exclusive release). It eventually became the first album by a Black female artist to spend 300 weeks on the Billboard 200.
Rolling Stone's Brittany Spanos called it "a sprawling masterpiece of psychedelic soul" and "a rich full-length statement."
"After more than a decade as a superstar of the singles chart, Rihanna has become an album artist," Spanos wrote. "After years as a singer largely defined by her production, it finally feels like Rihanna is in charge of her own sound, remaking pop on her own terms."
"Anti" was nominated for best urban contemporary album and best recording package at the 2017 Grammy Awards.
The album's biggest hit, "Work," was nominated for record of the year. Two of the album's sleeper hits, "Needed Me" and "Kiss It Better," were nominated for best R&B performance and best R&B song, respectively.
Rihanna's Grammy nominations that year also included album of the year for her work on Drake's "Views" and best rap/sung performance for her vocals on Kanye West's "Famous." She didn't leave the ceremony with any awards ( and fans will never forget ).
Rihanna accepted the Video Vanguard Award at the 2016 VMAs.
Before Rihanna accepted the Michael Jackson Video Vanguard Award at the 2016 MTV Video Music Awards — presented by Drake, who also casually confessed his love to her — she performed a medley of her greatest hits, including "Only Girl in the World," "Rude Boy," and "Bitch Better Have My Money."
Instead of putting on one career-spanning performance of hits, as per tradition for the award, the pop star gave four such performances over the course of the show .
Rihanna was Harvard's Humanitarian of the Year in 2017.
In March 2017, the Harvard University Foundation honored Rihanna as Humanitarian of the Year , in recognition of her dedication to promoting educational programs.

Rihanna launched Fenty Beauty in September 2017.
Rihanna made her foray into the world of beauty products on September 8, 2017 , when Fenty Beauty was officially made available online and at Sephora.
The makeup line's tour de force was its whopping 40 shades of foundation , which many hailed as the new standard of inclusivity for skin tones. The darkest shades appeared to sell out in record time .
Time magazine even listed Fenty Beauty among its best inventions of the year for 2017, in large part thanks to Rihanna's mission of representation.
"It was important that every woman felt included in this brand," Rihanna told Time . "We are all so different, with our own unique skin tones, so we started with the 40 foundation shades out the gate."
"I never could have anticipated the emotional connection that women are having with the products and the brand as a whole. Some are finding their shade of foundation for the first time, getting emotional at the counter," Rihanna said. "That's something I will never get over."
She launched Savage x Fenty in May 2018.
Savage x Fenty launched on May 11, 2018. The size-inclusive lingerie line was immediately praised for including people of "all shapes, sizes, and colors," a reputation that it still boasts to this day .
Rihanna channeled the pope at the 2018 Met Gala, for which she was a co-chair.
In one of her more iconic fashion moments, Rihanna attended the 2018 Met Gala in a silver, bedazzled gown and accompanying robe.
She completed her elaborate look with a Stephen Jones Millinery hat crafted in the style of the pope's tiara. This headdress is normally reserved for religious ceremonies — a nod to the night's theme, "Heavenly Bodies: Fashion & The Catholic Imagination."
The complete outfit took 250 hours to sew and 500 hours to hand-embroider .
Rihanna starred in the ensemble film "Ocean's 8," released on June 5, 2018.
Rihanna was cast as a hacker named Nine Ball in the heist comedy, which was conceived as an all-female spinoff of the popular "Ocean's 11" series.
While the film received mixed reviews , Rihanna was praised for adding "extra mischief and attitude to the octet," in the words of Film Journal International's Kevin Lally .

From the soulful island vibes of ‘Work’ to the upbeat pop of ‘Only Girl (In The World)’, Rihanna’s musical palette never fails to captivate.
The depth and breadth of Rihanna’s influences are evident in her songs, which have been described as a mix between Caribbean rhythms, R&B grooves and electronic beats. Her work also shows traces of rock, hip hop and trap elements – all combined with powerful vocals that inject every track with even more energy. It’s this unique blend of sounds that makes Rihanna’s music so special and stands out among other artists on the scene today.
Rihanna has cited Michael Jackson, Beyoncé Knowles-Carter, Mariah Carey and Brandy Norwood as some of her biggest inspirations musically. She has also paid homage to other influential figures throughout her career such as Bob Marley, Amy Winehouse and Sade Adu – whose timeless melodies can be felt in many of Rihanna’s own releases. Through acknowledging these stars while adding her own twist, Rihanna continues to push boundaries within popular music.
This combination of tradition and innovation results in something truly remarkable: modern classics that will remain relevant for generations to come!
Lyrics Themes
Rihanna’s lyrics are just as captivating as her music. Her songs explore a range of themes from love and heartbreak to empowerment, she paints vivid pictures that speak directly to the listener’s experience. Since the release of her debut album ‘Music Of The Sun’ in 2005, Rihanna has been known for producing anthems with bold messages about female strength and resilience – such as ‘SOS’, ‘Umbrella’ and ‘Diamonds’.
Other fan favorites like ‘Stay’ and ‘Love on the Brain’ showcase Rihanna’s more vulnerable side – demonstrating how lyrically she is able to capture complex emotions in simple yet effective ways. She also often uses relatable metaphors throughout her work; drawing comparisons between everyday occurrences and bigger topics such as mental health or social injustice. By doing this, Rihanna encourages listeners to reflect upon their own lives while also highlighting larger issues within our society today.
Though well-known for its upbeat melodies, Rihanna’s music does not shy away from difficult subjects either: tracks such as ‘Man Down’, ‘Russian Roulette’ and ‘FourFiveSeconds’ all tackle heavy topics head on without ever losing sight of hope. This mix of hard hitting lyricism alongside uplifting production is what makes listening to Rihanna so powerful – allowing us to confront life’s struggles while finding solace at the same time.
No matter the theme or genre, one thing remains constant: when it comes to songwriting, there is no one quite like Rihanna! Each track oozes emotion and meaning – leaving a lasting impression that will stay with you long after it ends.
Live Performances
Rihanna’s live performances are truly something to behold. Whenever she takes the stage, it is an electric experience that follows her inimitable style and flair. She commands attention with her powerful presence and dynamic energy – captivating audiences while delivering unforgettable experiences night after night.
From classic medleys of fan-favorite hits to reworked versions of her more recent albums, Rihanna consistently puts on a show worth remembering. Her singing voice is strong yet subtle; switching from low tones to high notes without missing a beat. Meanwhile, her dancing skills never fail to impress – as each move appears perfectly executed no matter how complex or intricate it may be.
In addition to the music itself, Rihanna also creates unique visuals for each tour which further enhance the overall atmosphere of any performance. From larger than life props that seem to float across the stadium skywards – to smaller details like light up stages and special effects, every element works together beautifully when seen through Riri’s signature lens.
There really is no better way to appreciate Rihanna’s artistry than by witnessing one of her explosive concerts firsthand! No matter where you find yourself in the crowd, you can feel sure that you will be taken away into another world full of raw emotion and dazzling visuals – leaving you feeling absolutely mesmerized until the very end.
Controversies
Controversies have surrounded Rihanna’s music career since the very beginning. From her early days of being labeled as a bad role model for young fans, to more recent debates about whether or not she has crossed certain boundaries with her provocative lyrics – there is no shortage of opinions when it comes to Riri’s artistry.
One particular controversy deals with the singer’s frequent use of explicit language in her songs and live performances. While some believe that this type of material should be discouraged from mainstream media, others argue that RiRi is simply portraying life through an honest lens – something which is necessary for artistic expression. Whatever your opinion may be, it is clear that Rihanna’s willingness to push boundaries has made her one of the most successful female artists in recent history.
Another issue surrounding Rihanna’s work involves accusations of cultural appropriation. Many feel that some of her past performances were insensitive towards various minority groups, while others see them as creative interpretations and forms of appreciation. No matter where you stand on this debate, it is important to recognize how much influence pop culture has had on society throughout history – and how even seemingly small actions can create larger conversations within our communities.
Overall, while controversies will always exist around any celebrity figure or artist, Rihanna continues to remain unapologetically true to herself; using her platform to spread messages both personal and political – all while inspiring millions along the way!
Endorsements And Business Ventures
In addition to her work as a recording artist and performer, Rihanna has also become an influential business woman. From launching her own fashion line with Puma, to partnering up with tech giant Samsung – the star is constantly expanding her presence in the corporate world.
She has also used her platform to promote various charitable causes throughout the years; most notably teaming up with The Global Partnership for Education (GPE) in order to help provide children around the world with access to quality education. Other endorsements include prestigious brands such as Dior and Avon – both of which have helped expand RiRi’s reach even further.
Rihanna’s success extends beyond just product placement however; she has also created her own makeup empire Fenty Beauty, which quickly became one of the fastest-growing cosmetic lines ever released! With its inclusive shades for all skin tones and innovative textures, it is no surprise that this beauty brand was met with huge critical acclaim from fans and industry experts alike.
The singer’s impressive entrepreneurship skills have certainly made waves within popular culture – proving that there is more than meets the eye when it comes to being an international superstar. From music career milestones to groundbreaking business ventures, Rihanna continues to prove time and time again why she remains at the top of her game!
Philanthropy
In addition to her business ventures, Rihanna is also well-known for her philanthropic work. She has been involved with a number of charities and causes over the years, including The Global Partnership for Education (GPE) which works to provide children in developing countries access to quality education; The Clara Lionel Foundation, established by Rihanna herself in 2012 which focuses on helping individuals affected by extreme poverty and disease; as well as MAC Cosmetics’ Viva Glam campaign aimed at raising money and awareness towards HIV/AIDS research.
Rihanna’s commitment to making an impact doesn’t stop there; she even launched the ‘Believe’ charity auction in 2010, offering fans the chance to bid on items such as backstage passes or dinner dates with the singer – all proceeds went directly to supporting those living in impoverished areas around the world. Her humanitarian efforts have earned her numerous awards from prestigious organizations like Harvard University, who honored RiRi with their Humanitarian of the Year Award back in 2017.
The star isn’t afraid to take a stand either – she recently used her influence and platform during the COVID-19 pandemic to help raise funds for various relief efforts. From matching fan donations up to $2 million dollars via Instagram Live streams, to setting up partnerships between local grocery stores and food banks across America – it goes without saying that Rihanna is truly dedicated towards creating lasting change wherever possible!
It is clear that Rihanna uses her celebrity status for more than just fame and fortune; it serves as an opportunity for her to give back and make a positive difference in our world today. Whether through music or charitable initiatives, RiRi continues to inspire millions worldwide while demonstrating what true leadership looks like.

It’s not only clothing either; RiRi has revolutionized how we view beauty standards by embracing her naturally curly hair and figure at all times.
The artist has even made waves within the business side of entertainment, using her platform as an advocate for fair wages and better working conditions for those behind-the-scenes. By speaking up about issues such as racism and sexism in the industry, Rihanna encourages others to do their part to create change regardless of what career they are pursuing.

In essence, Rihanna’s music has become more than just entertainment — it serves as a source of strength and comfort for millions around the world.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does rihanna have any siblings.
Does Rihanna have any siblings? This is a question that has been asked many times by fans of the pop star. It’s no surprise given her fame and success, as well as the fact she grew up in an extended family with multiple generations living together.
Rihanna does indeed have two younger brothers – Rorrey and Rajad Fenty – who both still live in Barbados, where they were born and raised. Her mother Monica Braithwaite was also born there, and it’s clear that Barbados remains close to RiRi’s heart. She often speaks fondly about her upbringing on the island nation.
Though neither brother is involved in music like their famous sister, they do share some similarities with her: They’re said to be just as ambitious and determined when it comes to achieving their goals. Of course, having someone like Rihanna for an older sibling might even drive them further towards success!
Rihanna’s brothers are a great source of inspiration and support for her throughout her career – something which can’t be underestimated at such a high level of achievement. Both continue to provide love and encouragement during this exciting period in her life, while remaining humble despite being related to one of the biggest names in the industry today.
What Is Rihanna’s Highest Charting Single?
What is the highest charting single from a music artist? It’s an interesting question to ask, particularly when it comes to one of the biggest stars in pop music today. Rihanna has had many huge hits over the course of her career and there are plenty of contenders for her highest charting single.
At first glance, some might think that “Umbrella” was Rihanna’s best-ever performance on the charts, as it topped multiple Billboard lists and went multi-platinum worldwide. However, this isn’t actually true: “We Found Love,” which featured Calvin Harris, actually reached higher positions on both US and UK singles charts than “Umbrella.” The song also won two Grammy Awards in 2012.
Rihanna’s 2010 collaboration with Eminem entitled “Love The Way You Lie” was another success story; it became her third number one hit in the USA as well as reaching number two in the UK Singles Chart. Although not quite as successful as “We Found Love” or “Umbrella”, it can be considered one of her most popular songs ever released.
But if we take into account all international markets combined – across Europe, Asia, South America etc – then undoubtedly Rihanna’s highest charting single is none other than 2017’s smash hit “Wild Thoughts”, featuring DJ Khaled and Bryson Tiller. It peaked at number two on the Global Top 100 Airplay list compiled by MediaBase Music and achieved similar heights around the world. This record-breaking track cemented Rihanna’s reputation as one of the greatest musical artists of our time – showing just how powerful she really is!
Does Rihanna Have Any Pets?
Does Rihanna have any pets? This is a question many people are asking, and the answer may surprise you.
Rihanna has been known to be an animal lover since she was young. In fact, it’s not just cats and dogs that she loves – she also owns two birds! She’s had her pet macaw Spike for years now, and recently added a baby parrot named Tango. It looks like Rihanna could soon become a bird mom if they reproduce!
In addition to these feathered friends, Rihanna also shares her home with several four-legged creatures. She owns three cats: Cleo, Peter Pan and Uchi; as well as two pups – Bear and Oliver. These animals get all of the love from their famous momma during the day and at night when RiRi finally gets some rest after long days in the studio or on tour.
It seems clear that whether its furry mammals or feathered ones, Rihanna shows unconditional love for all of her adorable animal companions. From snuggling up with them while watching movies to taking them out for walks around town, this star definitely knows how to give her beloved pets lots of attention.
What Kind Of Charities Has Rihanna Supported?
Many celebrities use their platform to support charitable causes, and Rihanna is no exception. The international pop star has used her influence to help a number of different initiatives over the years.
In 2017, she launched the Clara Lionel Foundation (CLF), which supports global health, education, arts, and culture initiatives. That same year, Rihanna joined forces with Global Citizen to launch an initiative called Education Cannot Wait—aimed at providing educational opportunities for children in crisis-affected countries around the world.
Rihanna has also been generous in donating money to organizations like World Food Programme that helps fight hunger worldwide; UNICEF’s “Unite For Our Future” campaign that works towards ending poverty; and Girls Who Code aimed at closing the gender gap in tech fields. She even donated $5 million dollars to a hospital in Barbados.
These are just some examples of how RiRi has used her celebrity status to give back and make a difference in the lives of others on a global scale. It clearly demonstrates her commitment to using her platform for good causes—and making sure those who need it most get access to resources they wouldn’t otherwise have.
In conclusion, Rihanna has made an incredible impact on the music industry. She’s had a long and successful career that is still evolving, with her latest album being released in 2020. She comes from a large family of three siblings and credits them as one of her biggest influences growing up. Her highest charting single was “Umbrella” which was number one all around the world. Aside from music, she also participates in charities like The Believe Foundation and Global Citizen to give back to those who need it most.
Rihanna’s success can be attributed to not only her hard work but also her musical influences such as Bob Marley, Lauryn Hill, Michael Jackson and Shontelle Layne. These artists have helped shape her style into something unique yet still familiar to fans across the globe. Additionally, Rihanna loves animals and apparently even has a pet tortoise named Bibi!
All in all, there’s no doubt that Rihanna has become an icon for many people worldwide through her music and philanthropic efforts. From having hit singles top charts to giving back generously – she’ll continue making waves in the entertainment industry for years to come!

Rihanna - Biography
The barbadian singer is one of the biggest-selling female artists in history..
Who is Rihanna?
Robyn Rihanna Fenty, better known by her stage name Rihanna , was born in Barbados in 1988. Her childhood was deeply affected by her parents' marital problems and her dad's battle with drug and alcohol addictions, which eventually led to their divorce when she was 14.
After his recovery, father and daughter grew close again and Rihanna still refers to him as the "coolest person on the planet". As a teenager Rihanna turned to music to escape her home troubles and formed a musical trio with two of her classmates.
Rihanna's rise to fame
Her big break came in 2003 when friends introduced her and fellow bandmates to record producer Evan Rogers, who was on holiday in Barnados with his wife. When the group auditioned for Evan, he later told Entertainment Weekly that "the minute Rihanna walked into the room, it was like the other two girls didn't exist."
Over the course of the next year, Rihanna travelled to Rogers' home in Connecticut to work on her demo album. With the help of songwriter Carl Sturken she made a four-song demo that included "Pon de Replay" which would become her first hit single. Rihanna officially relocated when she was 16.
"When I left Barbados, I didn't look back," she said. "I wanted to do what I had to do, even if it meant moving to America." Soon after, her demo fell into the hands of recording company Def Jam. She auditioned for them and legendary rapper Jay-Z, who was so impressed he signed her almost immediately. "We made a little Godfather joke," recalls Jay-Z. "We said the only way she could leave was through the window."
Eight months later Rihanna released her debut album, Music of the Sun , which went platinum despite less-than-rave reviews from Rolling Stone magazine who deemed it "lacking of ingenuity and rhythm." Her follow-up album, A Girl Like Me , fared better with critics in 2006 and included the hit SOS . Rihanna went through a total transformation from teen pop singer to ultimate superstar with her third album Good Girl Gone Bad . It featured hit single Umbrella that won her her first Grammy Award. She flaunted her sex symbol status in her next four albums, with songs entitled "Hard", "Rude Boy", "S&M" and the like, and frequently topped Sexiest Women Alive lists for her raunchy stage performances and music videos.
Which awards has Rihanna won?
Rihanna has been labelled one of the most consistent hit makers in pop music for her chart-topping seven albums and collaborations with legends Jay-Z, Enimen, Kanye West and Calvin Harris. She has won countless awards including Grammys, Brits, MTV awards and World Music Awards among others.
Rihanna's dating life
Her love life has been somewhat less plain sailing than her music career. Rihanna started dating Chris Brown late 2007 and the couple remained intensely private about their relationship. But just after midnight on February 8, a 911 call was made after a pre-Grammy party that the pair had attended. When the police arrived on the scene, Rihanna was found distressed and hurt.
It was reported that she had found texts from another girl on his phone and after repeatedly pressing him on the subject, an argument sparked which left Rihanna assaulted, even losing consciousness at one point. After the incident, Rihanna admitted feeling vulnerable. "I put my guard up so hard," she said. "I didn't want people to see me cry or feel bad for me. It was a very vulnerable time in my life, and I refused to let that be the image."
How many children does she have?
The 'Umbrella' singer, 35, and partner A$AP Rocky welcomed their first child — a boy whose name remains a mystery — in May 2022, and are awaiting the second soon.
The award-winning singer confirmed her second pregnancy to the world in 2023 via an internet-breaking performance at the Super Bowl Halftime Show.
Rihanna's charity work
She is eager to put her fame and fortune to good use, and is involved in many charity ventures. She created The Believe Foundation in 2006 to help terminally ill children, joined H&M for their Fashion Against AIDS campaign, and was the face of the Gucci UNICEF campaign.
