Live Deliberately Essay Contest

Live Deliberately Essay Contest

The Walden Woods Project & Thoreau Institute is offering Live Deliberately Essay Contest to youth students aged 14 – 21 around the world. The Project achieves its mission through the integration of conservation, education, research, and advocacy. The 2016-2017 contest will have three age groups: 14-16, 17-18, and 19-21.  One winner will be identified in each age group and will receive a $250 cash prize, plus an autographed special edition of Walden.

Founded in 1990 by recording artist Don Henley, the Project uses the land it has protected in Walden Woods to foster an ethic of environmental stewardship and social responsibility, both cornerstones of Thoreau’s philosophy.

Eligibility:

  • The contest is open to youth around the world. Youth must be at least 14 years and no older than 21 years of age at the time of submission. Past winners are not eligible to participate.
  • Each contestant who is 17 years of age or younger must have a teacher, club advisor, parent, or other adult sponsors. The sponsor will serve as the contact between the Walden Woods Project and the student. He or she should also review the contestant’s work prior to submission to ensure that it meets essay guidelines.

How to Apply:

  • Candidates can apply only online for the scholarship. The link is given below https://www.walden.org/education/essay-contest/submissionform/
  • You should write an essay on the given topic: Consider the different meanings of trees, cultivation, and soil as Thoreau uses them in the passages above. What guidance does Thoreau offer us in these quotations about living a deliberate life full of humanity and meaning? How do you “cultivate the tree which you have found to bear fruit in your soil” and why is that important? Use specific examples to support your ideas.

Essay Guidelines:

  • Length: Essays should be no longer than 750 words. This is a maximum word count; if your ideas can be clearly and powerfully communicated in fewer than 750 words, that is great.
  • Language: Essays should be written in English and represent the youth’s original work.  Youth are welcome to write their essay in their own language but it must be translated into English prior to submission.
  • Original Work: A teacher/sponsor can provide pre-writing activities and appropriate review, editing, and translation support, but the ideas, content, structure and style of the actual essay must come from the youth alone.
  • Titling Documents for Submission: To help in organize and manage the significant number of files that are submitted, they ask you to use the following guidelines when titling your document prior to submission: Please name the file “LastnameFirstinitial_Essay2017”. For example, our Director of Education, Whitney Retallic’s submission would be titled “RetallicW_Essay2017”.

Financial Aid and Award Money:

One winner will be identified in each age group and will receive a $250 cash prize, plus an autographed special edition of Walden.

Application Deadline:

The application deadline is March 15, 2017.

Trump's hush money trial resumes as ex-National Enquirer boss testifies

Project promoting unity draws concerns.

Aug. 9—Moscow city councilors hope that an effort to promote unity in Moscow will not further polarize the city.

The Moscow Human Rights Commission is planning to roll out the Moscow Together Project that allows businesses and nonprofits to advertise themselves as inclusive.

Businesses and nonprofits who participate in the project will sign a commitment statement.

"To enable everyone in our diverse, inclusive community to feel valued, safe, and welcome, I/we commit to treat every individual equally with dignity and respect in a safe and welcoming environment," reads the statement. "I/We agree to join MOSCOW TOGETHER and will display the Moscow Together logo decal or poster to indicate commitment to a welcoming, inclusive, caring community."

They will then receive decals and posters indicating they are part of the Moscow Together Project.

Ken Faunce, chairperson of the Moscow Human Rights Commission, said this effort is in response to reports of individuals saying they do not always feel safe and welcome in Moscow.

"The idea behind the project is to advertise and bring together Moscow as a welcoming, inclusive, safe place to live," he said.

Faunce explained the project Monday to the Moscow Public Works and Finance Committee, which includes city councilors Maureen Laflin, Hailey Lewis and Gina Taruscio.

The Human Rights Commission is asking the city council to endorse this project. Faunce said all the funding for the project will come from the Human Rights Commission budget.

Faunce stressed that any business or nonprofit without a decal or poster should not be considered unsafe or unwelcoming.

"We don't want a list of, 'Here's the good, here's the bad,' that kind of thing," Faunce said. "That's not what it's going to be."

Additionally, businesses that sign up for the project will be asked to remove the decal or poster if they are found to continually discriminate against individuals.

The Human Rights Commission is planning to officially launch the project in September.

Laflin, Lewis and Taruscio expressed concerns about how this project will be perceived by the public.

"With the goal of promoting unification and safe zones, does (Moscow Together) actually, in some respects, further polarize us?" Laflin said. "I just have to say we need to think about how we can overcome that."

Taruscio stated she would like the Human Rights Commission to further clarify that this project is not a list of businesses that "are approved or not approved."

Lewis wondered if this project should be focused less on businesses and more on individual vows.

Faunce said the Human Rights Commission plans on allowing individual residents to sign up for Moscow Together posters, yard signs and possibly T-shirts in the future.

The Public Works and Finance Committee agreed to allow this topic on the regular agenda for next week's Moscow City Council meeting.

Also on Monday, the Public Works and Finance Committee recommended the city council accept a bid of $49,925 from Western Construction to add landscaping to the roundabout being constructed on Mountain View Road and Sixth Street.

The plan calls for the installation of five trees, 25 shrubs, decorative grasses, mulch and irrigation.

The roundabout is one of several construction projects occurring on Mountain View Road this summer. Cody Riddle, Moscow deputy city supervisor, told the Daily News that construction on the intersection of D Street and Mountain View Road is on pace to be completed in the next couple of weeks before the school year begins.

The D Street and Mountain View Road work includes eliminating left-turn lanes, replacing sidewalks and installing pedestrian ramps.

Shortlist for the Moscow City Agglomeration Development Concept

walden woods project essay contest

  • Written by Karissa Rosenfield
  • Published on March 05, 2012

The Architectural Department of Moscow City Government (MosComArhitectura) has announced the shortlisted teams competing to design the strategy that will be used to double the size of Moscow . With an uneven distribution of working places throughout the Russian Federation capital, millions of residents are forced to commute each day to the over-populated, historic city center, thus causing serious transportation, ecological and social problems within the region.

The Moscow City Agglomeration Development Concept will see the city annex 150,316 hectares to its south-west in order to overcome its chronic space problems. OMA , Diller Scofidio & Renfro and McAdam Architects , lead by the well-known Russian architects Andrey Chernihov and Alexei Ginsburg, are a few names that appear among the ten shortlisted teams. Continue reading for more competition details and the entire shortlist.

McAdam Architects practice director, Tanya Kalinina said: “This is a completely unusual task. The strategy for a major capital city of over ten million is to be completely re-thought and enlarged to twice the size.”

Nearly 35% of the cities working places are concentrated within the densely built city center. The concept aims to provide a “wave-type” redistribution that will relieve the current strain of the historical centers by reorganizing and redeveloping the middle and periphery circular city zones. These zones are currently occupied by high-density housing with insufficient working spaces, transportation and social infrastructure; therefore the development of social infrastructure and high-speed transportation infrastructure will also play a major part in the plan for the Moscow agglomeration.

Additionally, the middle planning belt of the south-western sector will offer a place for local complexes of scientific, educational, medical objects and innovative production objects along with preservation of the valuable natural landscapes and recreation. The valuable natural landscape of the periphery planning belt will also be preserved with establishment of three to four national parks.
