When entering a science fair or completing a science project for a class doing the experiment is just the first part. Once you have finished your experiment, you will have to display the work you did and the results that came from that work. The typical science experiment is displayed on a white tri-fold board and includes many sections. Proper placement of the sections is crucial to the success of your board.

Deciding What Information to Include

• A good title might be “Volcanic Explosions” as opposed to just “Volcanoes.”
• When you can, use vivid, specific titles like “Bioluminescence in Crystal Jellyfish” in place of generic titles like “Glowing Jellies.”

• Follow the guidelines of the assignment or fair to know if you need an abstract or a hypothesis section.
• A hypothesis must accurately describe what is to be tested in the experiment, and what the expected outcome is. For example, a statement such as “The baking soda will react with the vinegar in a neutralization reaction, evolving gases and building pressure inside the volcano replica. This pressure will cause fluid to spew from the top of the replica.”

• Cite previous experiments that indicate that there is a reason to expect the results that your hypothesis predicts. For example, you could cite a lab experiment that states that acids and bases give off gas when they neutralize each other to support the hypothesis that baking soda and vinegar will go through such a reaction.

Organizing the Information

• All fonts should be easily readable. If the font is too small or unclear, this will discourage people from reading the information.
• Use bullet lists, multiple paragraphs, and white space on your board to avoid an overwhelming amount of text.

• If you prefer not to use glue, it may sometimes be acceptable to tack items to the board.
• Double sided tape is a good way to stick on things that do not stick well with glue.

How to Make a Good Presentation Using a Trifold Board

Trifold boards have been used by schoolchildren for years to create meaningful and pleasing presentations. Whether for science fairs or just a class project, these boards have been seen in just about every elementary school in the United States. If you want to make a good presentation using a trifold board, there are a few tips that you can use to make your board more logical and pleasing to the eye.

1 Gather all materials

Gather all materials that will be going on your presentation board. These materials might be pages of your report, photographs, titles and headings. Position all of your materials on the board and move them around until you get a configuration that looks nice and is organized and clear.

Mount all photographs or graphics on a piece of construction paper or poster board for greater visual appeal. This is much nicer to look at than a photo simply glued straight on the board.

3 Glue each page

Glue each page of of your report that will go on the board to a piece of construction paper to give it a frame. This will make the report pages stand out on the board.

4 Create a title

Create a title for your project and print it out in large letters, at least one-half inch tall, on a plain sheet of paper. Make sure that the title is centered. Staple it to the top center of the middle section of the trifold board.

5 Attach all of your materials

Attach all of your materials to the board as you outlined in step 1. You can either use a glue stick or a staple gun and staples. Staple your decorative border around the edges of the board.

• Be sure to double check all spelling in your report papers.
• Fold your board carefully for transport on the morning of the presentation. Make sure that you have enough room in the vehicle to transport the board to school.

High School Sports Poster Ideas

Tri-fold presentation display boards are some of the most effective and interesting ways to summarize or complement a presentation or unit study. Science fairs, model United Nations competitions, unit studies on subjects from history to international topics, and organizational advertising at missions/career/college fairs are just a few of the endless uses for tri-fold displays.

Tri-fold boards only capture about 15 to 20 seconds of a viewer’s attention. Since more than 15 seconds’ worth of time is invested in the board’s creation, make that investment count!. Displays should emphasis bright colors, minimal text and only the most relevant and unique information.

Know Your Audience

Toward whom is this information directed? Cater to your group’s prior knowledge and cultural/age tendencies. For example, don’t include basic background knowledge about a higher-level topic addressing experts in that field. Include basics if necessary, but try to include revolutionary and/or unique information in your presentation.

Headers and Titles

Grab audience attention. The title of the display should be pithy, captivating and easy-to-read. Be creative and imaginative. Alliterated and short titles are often the catchiest. Use a bold, basic font and dark coloring. You may consider using Microsoft Word fonts or stenciling by hand.

Because the purpose of the display board is to enhance visualization of concepts or ideas, diagrams, photographs and other illustrations are the most important part of the presentation. They should be tastefully chosen and accurately captioned. It can be fun to glue pictures to construction paper “frames” to enhance eye capturing and make the pictures more durable.

Text and Content

Text should be summarized as briefly as possible. Bullet points, large bold font and easy-to-understand vocabulary are musts. The purpose of text on a display board is to clearly explain that which cannot be explained as clearly through visual aids.

Interactive Components: Think Outside the Board

One of the coolest opportunities a display board gives is the chance to display 3-D or other hands-on objects on the table in front of the board, such as a Mahjohng game board for a display regarding “games around the world,” or a Popsicle stick log cabin for a display on American pioneers. Science displays lend themselves well to this. Cultural foods, science experiments, and other novelties and craft projects can also be shared to complement the visuals on the board.

Have fun, be creative and think outside the board.

Making tri-folds in powerpoint.

While Microsoft PowerPoint is almost exclusively used for presentation purposes, it’s also a great application for creating interesting and visually appealing brochures. Here’s how to create (and print out) a tri-fold using PowerPoint.

Good news---there are templates! This is the quickest and easiest way to accomplish your goal, as there are several different tri-fold templates available for download online . Browse through the template library, select the one you like, and download it. Once you’ve downloaded it, go ahead and open it up and you’ll be greeted by two slides.

These slides contain boilerplate text and images, but the layout is exactly what you need for a tri-fold brochure. All you need to do is replace the content with your own. Let’s use the first column of slide two as an example.

As you can see, we have three parts here---the header (1), some descriptive bullet points (2), and an image (3). Replacing the header and bullet point content with your own is easy. All you need to do is click the respective text box, delete the boilerplate content, and input your text.

To replace the image, select it and then right-click it. Click “Change Picture” from the menu that appears.

In the sub-menu, select the source of your photo.

Once you’ve navigated to the picture’s location, select it and insert it. It will then replace the boilerplate image in the slide’s column.

Repeat these steps for the remainder of the content. The first column on the first slide will be the front page of your brochure, and the last column of the second slide will be the back page. Enter your content appropriately.

Once you’re finished entering in your content, it’s time to print it out! To print out your tri-fold, head over to the “File” tab.

Select “Print” from the left-hand pane.

Under the “Settings” menu, make sure to select “Print on Both Sides.”

Next, enter the number of copies to be printed and select “Print.”

Finally, after they’re all printed out, make sure to fold them on the dotted lines.

All that’s left to do is hand them out!
