The 8 Best Homework Apps to Help Students Stay on Track

Get homework help from AI, fellow students, and even real tutors.

Whether you're a school student or a college student, homework is an essential part of the learning process. Fortunately, there are plenty of apps that can help you get your homework done, the only trouble is knowing which apps are best to download. If you're a student, read on to take a look at some of the best homework apps for Android and iPhone.

Do you need help with math, biology, history, or physics? Brainly is the homework app for you. Using the app for homework help is as straightforward as taking a photo, typing, or voice searching the question or equation and then waiting for an answer.

All the answers come from Brainly's online community of other students as well as experts from around the world. However, if you aren't happy with the answers, you also have the option to ask the app's AI tutor, Ginny.

Moreover, you can assist other students with their own homework by answering their questions. Which questions you help out with can be filtered according to school level and subject.

2. Photomath

Unlike Brainly, the Photomath app is a pretty straightforward homework app and has one single core focus—math. Photomath is truly one of the best apps to help you solve math problems , and it works similarly in that you merely have to scan the problem with your phone and the app gives you instant answers.

But Photomath doesn't stop there, the app actually breaks down the entire equation and gives you a step-by-step explanation of how it came to the solution. What's more, you can tap on each step to see an even more detailed animated lesson with voice instructions.

In addition, the Photomath app includes a built-in calculator where you can type the question out instead of snapping a photo.

Another tool Chegg Study includes is over 500 million free flashcards on subjects like astronomy, business, chemistry, and psychology. Alternatively, you can use the app to create your own set of flashcards.

But the Chegg Study app also comes in handy if you need help with a specific course. All you have to do is add the course and the app provides everything you need to ace it, like expert Q&A and exam prep. Alternatively, there are a selection of Chegg alternatives you can try , too.

What you need to know

  • Google's latest app, Photomath, is a new addition to its lineup of AI-powered productivity tools, simplifying the process of tackling math problems.
  • Photomath allows users to solve a range of math problems by simply snapping a picture of the equation, and then it provides step-by-step explanations.
  • The app also offers a subscription option called Photomath Plus, priced at $9.99 per month or $69.99 annually.

Google's newest app is diving deeper into the world of AI-powered productivity tools, making it easier for users to tackle tricky math problems.

Google has officially welcomed Photomath into its lineup of apps (via 9to5Google ). The search giant acquired the Croatia-based service in May 2022, but it took until last year to finalize the deal after the European Commission greenlighted the acquisition.

While Google's current services like Google Docs and Search already offer math-solving capabilities , Photomath takes it up a notch by providing a more convenient and efficient way to tackle those pesky math problems.

Photomath gives users the power to crack a variety of math problems, whether they're dealing with trigonometry or calculus. All you have to do is snap a picture of the equation, and Photomath provides step-by-step explanations and solving methods. You can also upload files of your math assignments. It's a game-changer for students and parents, who often check their kids' homework.

The coolest thing about this app is probably the solving steps. It doesn't just hand you the answer; it shows you how to arrive at it on your own. Plus, it works even without an internet connection.

Google offers a "Photomath Plus" subscription too, which costs $9.99 a month or $69.99 for the whole year. With this subscription, you unlock some handy extras like textbook solutions, animated tutorials, and more detailed explanations.

This app isn't exactly new; it debuted in 2014 and has racked up over 100 million downloads since then. And it's got 4.5 stars on the Play Store and 4.7 stars on the App Store . Photomath has probably gained its fame for being quick and spot-on.

Some of you may have also tried the " Homework" filter on Google Lens at some point. And it's not hard to imagine Photomath's AI getting baked into Google's products like Lens. That could take the text recognition and problem-solving features to a whole new level.

Best math apps for Chromebooks in 2023

In this piece we look at the best math apps for chromebooks. There are a number of excellent options, from web apps to Android apps.

Whether you're looking to help your kids with their math homework or need help in your own college courses, math apps can be very helpful. If you're looking to do it on a Chromebook , there are a number of math apps available in the form of web apps and Android apps. Many of these apps also exist on iOS, Windows, and other platforms as well. Some focus on graphing capabilities, while others can help with unit conversions, symbolic algebra, or other advanced mathematics like calculus or differential equations. These great math apps can help with math homework at any level.

1 Wolfram Alpha

Existing as both a web app and mobile app, Wolfram Alpha can help with any math level, from basic number crunching all the way up to differential equations for engineering. You can also get plenty of useful information about almost any other subject. One of the nice new features of Alpha is the ability to enter math in textbook notation with a graphical user interface. This feature makes the program more intuitive, as you no longer need to be familiar with the Mathematica syntax conventions to enter an advanced mathematics problem into the Alpha engine.

On ChromeOS, your best bet is to run Wolfram Alpha in the browser. You can install it as a web app shortcut just like any other browser application. If you want step-by-step calculations for your math problems, you'll need to subscribe to Wolfram Pro, which costs $7.25 per month for registered students. That may sound like a lot, but if you consider how much a personal math tutor costs, this is a steal. Wolfram Alpha also has specific web apps for each popular subject for Pro subscribers, including apps tailored for algebra, calculus, and financial mathematics in particular. With the improvements in user interface and an impressive computational engine, Wolfram Alpha is among the best math apps for Chromebooks.

Visit Wolfram Alpha

2 Google Bard

Need help solving a math problem or just have a simple question about math? Instead of asking ChatGPT, why not turn to Google's own AI-powered solution? Google Bard is available through the web in Chrome on your Chromebook and is currently in experimental mode. It's still in the early stages, but it's proven to be good at solving complex equations and answering math questions. You can simply snap a photo of a math problem using your phone, copy it over to your Chromebook, upload it to Bard, and ask Bard to solve it. You'll get step-by-step directions that are simple and easy to understand. You can even use your voice on Google Bard and read aloud your math question if you don't prefer typing. It's an incredible experience that you have to see to believe.

Visit Google Bard on the web

Desmos has a free suite of web-based math software tools, including the renowned Desmos Graphing Calculator and Scientific Calculator. It also has a more intuitive graphing calculator interface than any of the other math apps out there, so it's used throughout classrooms around the country and has a proven track record of helping students learn concepts in algebra and precalculus. If you want to have a nice web app for graphing and don't want to spend $100+ on a graphing calculator at Target, Desmos is perfect.

Visit Desmos online

Most math calculators are lacking in features when it comes to geometry, but Geogebra excels at integrating geometric learning with other mathematical disciplines. In addition to a web app, Geogebra has apps specifically designed for download on ChromeOS as well as all other popular desktop operating systems. Specific calculators are available for geometry, algebra, spreadsheets (useful for statistics), and more. You can also sync your work in Geogebra across devices by logging in with your Google account, which is perfect for Chromebook users. On top of these computational tools, Geogebra offers a web-based notebook to keep track of your math notes and computations for later review.

Try Geogebra

5 Photomath

Photomath does not have a native ChromeOS app and doesn't work in a browser, but there is an Android app that you can use on some Chromebooks. It's a little awkward, but the core functionality of the app still works fine if all you want is instant answers to your math problems without focusing on how to get there first. This is why students looking to cheat on exams or even homework find it too tempting. Still, Photomath is overall quite good for algebra and basic mathematics, but for more advanced courses with more efficient computations and in-depth explanations on a technical level, take a look at Wolfram Alpha

Mathway is another app that is incredibly popular with students thanks to its simplicity of use and the quick results on answers submitted to the calculation engine. A few years back, Mathway was purchased by the popular homework help site Chegg, which is responsible for a lot of cheating on exams at colleges and universities across the nation. While Mathway certainly has a wide variety of calculators for help on all levels of math, the temptation to simply copy the exact solutions or access them via Chegg is somewhat of a downside.

Thankfully, if you want to use Mathway on a Chromebook, it does have a web portal. You can also choose to use the Android app if you so desire. There is the ability to snap a quick picture as well if you need that functionality from Photomath. Algebra steps are well explained in this app, so if you need help with that subject, in particular, it's especially worth considering.

7 Microsoft Math Solver

If you're a loyal Microsoft user, Microsoft Math Solver might be your favorite math app. The interface is very similar to Wolfram Alpha, and the functionality is improving day by day. This is a newer app, but it has a variety of subjects, and the computational engine is solid. You can see a nice breakdown of the subjects covered on the home page, which makes this one of the easier apps to navigate. The graphing UI is more intuitive than Wolfram Alpha, but you can't get help with more advanced subjects like real analysis or abstract algebra.

Overall, Microsoft Math Solver is a better option than most math apps outside of Wolfram Alpha. You can copy and paste formulas into a Word or Excel document and explore step-by-step solutions that are generally very well presented. If Microsoft keeps up development, this could be one of the best math apps for Chromebooks.

Try Microsoft Math Solver

8 All Math Formulas

For researchers or math majors, sometimes all you need is a solid reference app for math formulas and theorems. All Math Formulas is a perfect app that provides all basic to advanced formulas in mathematics in 30+ languages. There isn't a need to make notes to remember mathematics formulas; just search any formula. Formulas are very simply explained with necessary figures where appropriate.

This app includes formulas for geometry, algebra, calculus, differential equations, analysis, and more. This app is available as an Android app, but it works well and is easy to navigate on a Chromebook. If you don't need math help but just need a great reference, this is my go-to choice on ChromeOS and Android.

Those are our picks for the best math apps for Chromebooks. Keep in mind that many of these apps are available on Mac, Windows, Android, and iOS as well. The best choice for math help is Wolfram Alpha. Not only does it have the longest development history, but it also has the most robust computational knowledge base and the ability to help with the most advanced coursework. Microsoft Math Solver is a newer app that also has a clean interface and a fairly impressive computational engine. For those who use Microsoft apps regularly, this might be the best bet for you. I would recommend avoiding apps that simply require a picture to get instant help, but only because it tends to discourage real learning and mathematical understanding at a deeper level, which would be a detriment to students . If you're looking to jump into the world of Chromebooks, you can check out the current best selection at Best Buy .

iOS 18 could get some Note-worthy productivity upgrades

Published on April 18, 2024

apple iphone 15 front hero

  • iOS 18 may support recording audio and math notations directly in the Apple Notes app.
  • The same upgrades could also come to iPadOS 18 and macOS 15, along with a Calculator app for iPad.
  • iOS 18, iPadOS 18, and macOS 15 will be officially previewed during WWDC24 on June 10.

iOS 18 is just a couple of months away, and, at this point, we may have an idea or two as to what to expect from this release. Apart from the AI goods we expect to see in Apple’s next-gen operating systems, a fresh iOS 18 rumor reveals potential upgrades that may be coming to the built-in Notes app on the iPhone.

According to information obtained by AppleInsider , iOS 18 may enhance the Apple Notes app by integrating some power-user features. These potential additions could include a native audio recorder and support for mathematical notations. The same features are also expected to become available on the latest iPads and Macs through iPadOS 18 and macOS 15, respectively.

For reference, Apple Notes already supports importing audio recordings from the Voice Memos app. However, adding a dedicated recorder in the Notes app itself could encourage more casual users to rely on the feature and simplify the overall process. That’s not to mention the rumored integration with the Calculator app, which would help Apple Notes compete with the more advanced third-party solutions.

Speaking of the Calculator app, the rumor also suggests that iPadOS 18 may finally introduce this highly anticipated application on the iPad. The iPhone, Mac, and even Apple Watch have had native Calculator apps for eons. Bringing this app to the iPad would address the endless user complaints found across the web and further streamline Apple’s app suite across its different operating systems.

We expect Apple to reveal iOS 18, iPadOS 18, and macOS 15 during the main WWDC24 keynote on June 10. Based on the company’s history, it’s safe to assume that the first developer betas of these operating systems will also be released later that day.

I’ve never been so greatful towards an app before, usually there was a deal with other apps that you had only a few tries before you had to pay for the full thing or wait your time…which 90% of the time didn’t even give you an answer or help… I’ve never had something this smooth be so dang helpful 😭❤️ Not only did it help me pass my test (88% omg 😍) but it also gave helpful advice and dumbed it down for me so i didn’t have to read through everything. Quite literally gave me the information i wanted and also the answer which is AMAZING 😨❤️Helped me better understand the questions SO THANK YOU 🙏 will definitely be using this on math 🥶 hoping for the same smoothness on math since it’s what i struggle with but overall just from a first time use i’m deeply thankful for this app!! 😭🙏❤️

Developer Response ,

Thank you for your positive feedback! I'm delighted to hear that you're enjoying the application. Please feel free to share any suggestions you have directly, and I'll do my best to assist or pass them along to the appropriate team for consideration.

I LOVE this app!! 💞💞💖💖

So I use edgecourseware and some of the questions can get VERY hard, and it gets to the point I want someone smart to answer it for me. So the other day I was scrolling on TikTok just to find THIS helpful app, and I think of my edgecourseware. So I’m all like “omg! This app can help me with edgecourseware!” So I don’t hesitate to download it. I get on edgecourseware and show the camera to a hard question and press the button, and it gives me the answer! And this thing has retakes on it so I had to retake the test cause I was always getting wrong answers on it! And the scores would come out bad too! So I see my test scores to compare them, 60% - 100% !! I love this app. If it weren’t for this app, I would have never passed the test! 🩷🩷 xoxo

Pretty good, but…

I really like this app because when I’m having a hard time with my math in school, I go onto this app and check to see if my answers are right. If not, I see what I did wrong which prevents mistakes and helps me to learn. Especially since not too many people I know understand my math, it makes it a lot easier. There’s absolutely no ads, and if you’re confused about something, you can ask it any question. However, it can’t do the work of area correctly. I had an answer of 168, even my dad checked it, and it told me 288, which is far off. I don’t even know how it got that answer. It’s good for basically any math, except for geometry and area, and you know that sort of thing. I also was simplifying expressions and it gave me wrong answers for 2 of them even though I did them in school and checked it with the class. You have to be careful that way.
We genuinely appreciate your openness in sharing your thoughts with us. It is through such insights that we can enhance our services and accuracy in the short future.
