Acknowledgement for Assignment

An acknowledgement is an important part of every assignment or project. A project or an assignment is completed by an individual or group with the help and guidance of their teachers, mentors, friends, group members, etc. It is a good practice for the individual or the group to acknowledge others’ contributions towards the completion of the assignment. Thus, while submitting a project, a student or a group should attach an acknowledgement page, wherein a short write-up thanking all the people who played an instrumental role in helping the person complete the project is acknowledged. In this article, we shall guide you in writing an acknowledgement for assignment.

Acknowledgement For Assignment

Acknowledgement pages are a common feature in academic writing, and for good reason. They allow you to show your gratitude to everyone who has helped you along the way.

But writing an acknowledgement page can be difficult, especially if you don’t know where to start. That’s why I’ve put together this list of 6+ examples of acknowledgement for assignment. Hopefully, they will help you to create a page that accurately reflects your gratitude.

Acknowledgement Writing Tips For Assignment

Writing an acknowledgement for an assignment can be a great way to show gratitude to those who have helped you during the research and writing process. Here are a few tips to help you write a meaningful and effective acknowledgement:

  • Be specific: Rather than simply saying “Thanks to all those who helped me,” name the individuals or organizations that have provided you with support. This could include professors, peers, librarians, or other researchers who have contributed to your work.
  • Be sincere: Make sure your acknowledgement is heartfelt and genuine. Avoid using overly formal or clichéd language, and try to express your appreciation in a personal and meaningful way.
  • Be concise: An acknowledgement is not the main part of your assignment, therefore it should be brief, and to the point. Keep your language clear and simple, avoiding technical or jargon-heavy language.
  • Be professional: Even though you are expressing your gratitude, remember that this is still a formal document. Keep your tone professional and avoid any overly personal anecdotes or jokes.
  • Organize and format it properly: The acknowledgement should be placed in a specific section of your assignment, usually before the table of contents or at the end of the document and formatted consistently with the rest of the document.
  • Mentioning the Role played: Try to mention the specific way in which each person or organization helped you. For example, “I am grateful to Professor X for providing valuable feedback on my research proposal,” or “I would like to thank the librarians at Y University for their assistance in locating relevant sources.”

Overall, the main aim of an acknowledgement is to express your gratitude and appreciation for the help you received in completing your assignment. As long as you keep these tips in mind, you should be able to write an effective acknowledgement that showcases your gratitude in a professional and meaningful way.

The Acknowledgements Section

How to write the acknowledgements for your thesis or dissertation

By: Derek Jansen (MBA) | Reviewers: Dr Eunice Rautenbach | January 2024

Writing the acknowledgements section of your thesis might seem straightforward, but it’s more than just a list of names . In this post, we’ll unpack everything you need to know to write up a rock-solid acknowledgements section for your dissertation or thesis.

Overview: The Acknowledgements

  • What (exactly) is the acknowledgements section?

Who should you acknowledge?

  • How to write the section
  • Practical example
  • Free acknowledgements template
  • Key takeaways

What is the acknowledgements section?

The acknowledgements section of your thesis or dissertation is where you give thanks to the people who contributed to your project’s success. Generally speaking, this is a relatively brief, less formal section.

With the acknowledgements section, you have the opportunity to show appreciation for the guidance, support, and resources provided by others during your research journey. We’ll unpack the exact contents, order and structure of this section in this post.

Need a helping hand?

assignment on acknowledgment

Although this is a less “academic” section, acknowledging the right people in the correct order is still important. Typically, you’ll start with the most formal (academic) support received, before moving on to other types of support.

Here’s a suggested order that you can follow when writing up your acknowledgements:

Level 1: Supervisors and academic staff

Start with those who have provided you with academic guidance, including your supervisor, advisors, and other faculty members.

Level 2: Funding bodies or sponsors

If your research was funded, acknowledging these organisations is essential. You don’t need to get into the specifics of the funding, but you should recognise the important role that this made in bringing your project to life.

Level 3: Colleagues and peers

Next you’ll want to mention those who contributed intellectually to your work, including your fellow cohort members and researchers.

Level 4: Family, friends and pets

Last but certainly not least, you should acknowledge your personal (non-academic) support system – those who have provided emotional and moral support. If Fido kept you company during those long nights hunched over the keyboard, you can also thank him here 🙂

As you can see, the order of the acknowledgements goes from the most academic to the least . Importantly, your thesis or dissertation supervisor (sometimes also called an advisor) generally comes first . This is because they are typically the person most involved in shaping your project (or at least, they should be). Plus, they’re oftentimes involved in marking your final work and so a kind word never hurts…

All that said, remember that your acknowledgements section is personal . So, feel free to adjust this order, but do pay close attention to any guidelines or rules provided by your university. If they specify a certain order or set of contents, follow their instructions to the letter.

How to write the acknowledgements section

In terms of style, try to strike a balance between conveying a formal tone and a personal touch . In practical terms, this means that you should use plain, straightforward language (this isn’t the time for heavy academic jargon), but avoid using any slang, nicknames, etc.

As a guide, you’ll typically use some of the following phrases in the acknowledgements section:

I would like to express my appreciation to… for their help with… I’m particularly grateful to… as they provided… I could not have completed this project without… as this allowed me to… Special thanks to… who did… I had the pleasure of working with… who helped me… I’d also like to recognise… who assisted me with…

In terms of positioning, the acknowledgements section is typically in the preliminary matter , most commonly after the abstract and before the table of contents. In terms of length, this section usually spans one to three paragraphs , but there’s no strict word limit (unless your university’s brief states otherwise, of course).

If you’re unsure where to place your acknowledgements or what length to make this section, it’s a good idea to have a look at past dissertations and theses from your university and/or department to get a clearer view of what the norms are.

Aim to use plain, straightforward language with as little jargon as possible. At the same time, avoid using any slang or nicknames.

Practical Example

Alright, let’s look at an example to give you a better idea of what this section looks like in practice.

I would like to express my deepest gratitude to Professor Smith, whose expertise and knowledge were invaluable during this research. My sincere thanks also go to the University Research Fund for their financial support.   I am deeply thankful to my colleagues, John and Jane, for their insightful discussions and moral support. Lastly, I must acknowledge my family for their unwavering love and encouragement. Without your support, this project would not have been possible.

As you can see in this example, the section is short and to the point , working from formal support through to personal support. If you’re interested, you can explore a few more examples here .

To simplify the process, we’ve created a free template for the acknowledgements section. If you’re interested, you can download a copy here .

FAQs: Acknowledgements

Can i include some humour in my acknowledgements.

A touch of light humour is okay, but keep it appropriate and professional. Remember that this is still part of an academic document.

Can I acknowledge someone who provided informal or emotional support?

Yes, you can thank anyone who offered emotional support, motivation, or even informal advice that helped you during your studies. This can include friends, family members, or a mentor/coach who provided guidance outside of an academic setting.

Should I mention any challenges or difficulties I faced during my research?

While the acknowledgements section is primarily for expressing gratitude, briefly mentioning significant challenges you overcame can highlight the importance of the support you received. That said, you’ll want to keep the focus on the gratitude aspect and avoid delving too deeply into the challenges themselves.

Can I acknowledge the contribution of participants in my research?

Absolutely. If your research involved participants, especially in fields like social sciences or human studies, acknowledging their contribution is not only courteous but also an ethical practice. It shows respect for their participation and contribution to your research.

How do I acknowledge posthumous gratitude, for someone who passed away during my study period?

Acknowledging a deceased individual who played a significant role in your academic journey can be done respectfully. Mention them in the same way you would a living contributor, perhaps adding a note of remembrance.

For example, “I would like to posthumously acknowledge John McAnders for their invaluable advice and support in the early stages of this research.”.

Is there a limit to the number of people I can acknowledge?

How do i acknowledge a group or organisation.

When thanking a group or organization, mention the entity by name and, if applicable, include specific individuals within the organization who were particularly helpful.

For example, “I extend my thanks to The Speakers Foundation for their support, particularly Mr Joe Wilkins, for their guidance.”

Recap: Key Takeaways

Writing the acknowledgements section of your thesis or dissertation is an opportunity to express gratitude to everyone who helped you along the way.

Remember to:

  • Acknowledge those people who significantly contributed to your research journey
  • Order your thanks from formal support to personal support
  • Maintain a balance between formal and personal tones
  • Keep it concise

In a nutshell, use this section to reflect your appreciation in a genuinely and professionally way.

Every assignment  or project must include an acknowledgment. Expressing your gratitude to those who have been directly or indirectly engaged in completing your work is always regarded as polite.

Guidelines for Writing Acknowledgements

Make sure you have the following information on hand before you begin writing your assignment's acknowledgment .

  • Not all the names of those who have offered you assistance, either directly or indirectly, or advice on how to complete the job.
  • By placing the names of the most significant individuals at the start of the recognition, you can ensure that you mention the names of the persons in a logical order.
  • Briefly describe how their encouragement and assistance helped you finish the assignment.
  • Avoid overusing lofty terms in the acknowledgment. So that it is straightforward to understand, keep it as simple as you can.
  • No matter how minor a part they may have played in assisting you with the project, be sure to thank everyone who has contributed to the process. You can thank everyone individually if the list is lengthy.
  • The acknowledgment should seem serious and businesslike above everything else.

How to Write Acknowledgements

  • 2-minute read
  • 25th March 2015

If you are near the end of your thesis, you can start to think about putting on the finishing touches . One thing you will have to do here is write your acknowledgements. A lot of people worry about this, but there’s really no need. As we are about to show, it’s actually quite simple!

What Are Acknowledgements?

The acknowledgement section of a thesis is where you can thank everyone who has helped you in your research. It is typically located at the beginning of your thesis, right after the contents page, and shouldn’t really be more than one or two pages long. The best thing to do is to keep it concise.

Who Should I Thank?

Think about the people who were of crucial importance during your research. This could include friends, family or professors, or even volunteers who have taken part in your research. It’s also important to acknowledge professional bodies who have given you funding or other help.

How Should I Write It?

There are no strict requirements for the tone of your acknowledgements; it’s essentially the one section where you can be a little bit more informal! Try to make sure the tone fits the person or organization you’re thanking, though, maintaining a formal approach when addressing funding bodies or other official groups.

Other than trying to be concise, the main thing you should keep in mind is varying your language, if only because starting every sentence with “I would like to thank…” will sound a bit dull.

There are several ways you could word your thanks. A few suggestions are:

  • This research would not have been possible without…
  • My sincere thanks go to…
  • I am grateful to…
  • Heartfelt thanks to…
  • I would like to express my gratitude to…
  • Appreciation is due to…
  • I acknowledge the contribution of…
  • I am indebted to…

And that’s all there is to it! Relax and enjoy writing your acknowledgements. If you’ve got this far in the thesis-writing process, you’re over the toughest bit now! For more information about writing a dissertation or thesis, read our full dissertation writing guide .

“Acknowledgement” vs “Acknowledgment”… …what the hack?

assignment on acknowledgment

Both “acknowledgement” and “acknowledgment” are used in the English-speaking world. However, acknowledgement with the “e” in the middle is more commonly used. It is up to 24.5 times more popular in the top 5 English-speaking countries in the world.

Why should I include an acknowledgement section in my writing?

Acknowledging assistance and contributions from others can establish your integrity as a researcher. This will eventually make your work more credible.

Where to put the acknoweldgement section?

Generally, the acknowledgements should be put right after the title page and before the table of contents.

For term papers, you can also write your acknowledgement at the end, after the conclusion, and before the reference section.

How long should an acknowledgement be?

The length of an acknowledgement should not be more than one page if you are writing for your thesis or dissertation. You should keep your acknowledgement as short as possible thanking all the individuals helping your throughout the project.

For a simple college or school project, you should write at least a paragraph or two thanking at least your college/school and teachers/instructors. A s hort 1-2 paragraph or 100-150 words for your acknowledgement section is fine.

What should be acknowledged about?

In your acknowledgement section, you can show gratitude for those who provide you with resources in the following area;

  • Technical help may include people who helped you by providing materials and supplies.
  • Intellectual help includes academic advice and assistance.
  • Mental help can be any kind of verbal support and encouragement.
  • Financial help is obviously related to monetary support

Who should I include in the acknowledgement?

In general, there are two main categories of acknowledgements:  professional  and  personal . And sometimes people would include a spiritual acknowledgement to the higher power.

It’s a common practice to put professional acknowledgements first, followed by any personal ones. And in the case of spiritual acknowledgement, it will be out up front regardless.

  • Your Supervisor/ Teacher
  • Lab assistants
  • Academic staff of your school/college
  • Your college/school
  • Your faculty/department
  • Friends/Your colleagues
  • Family members

Start by listing all the people whom you wish to thank for helping or collaborating with your project. It could be your teacher, your friends, your families, and others. List everyone whom you think has helped you achieve your project goals.

Then you would have to organize them, starting with those people who helped you the most with the project. After that, you can thank your college or university as well.

When thanking professionals, always write out their  full names  and provide their titles. For example, “I would like to thank Dr. Steve Kerr, Professor Matt Simms for their support in this project.”

If you intend to include a list of people from one institution or organization, it is best to list their names in  alphabetical order .

What is the tone and format of the acknowledgement section?

You should write your acknowledgement in formal language with complete sentences. Although the  first person  is not used in academic research projects, you can use it in the acknowledgement for the thesis section. In other words, p ersonal pronouns  such as “I, my, me …”are nearly always used in the acknowledgements.

The information supplied in the acknowledgement section of academic writing should be kept concise. It should only include persons who are directly involved with the project.

Academic Acknowledgment and Thank You Speech Templates

assignment on acknowledgment

Writing Academic Acknowledgements

Step 1 Use the appropriate tone and form.

  • The acknowledgment page can either be a list or a more fluid paragraph. It would be fine to write, "I would like to thank Professor Henderson, Dr. Matthews, etc." until you've worked your way through the list.
  • It would also be perfectly acceptable to address each person individually and more personally: "I would like to thank Professor Henderson for her expert advice and encouragement throughout this difficult project, as well as Dr. Matthews for his brilliance in the lab." [2] X Research source
  • Some people feel uncomfortable emphasizing certain people's help over other people's help, in which case the list form in alphabetical order is a perfectly acceptable method of writing an Acknowledgment.

Step 2 Start with the most important teachers.

  • In general, it's helpful to think in groups, even going to far as to format all the thank-yous of a particular group in a single sentence: "I would like to thank Dr. Stevens, Dr. Smith, and Professors Clemons for their extraordinary support in this thesis process."
  • If you worked with a small committee, it's customary and thoughtful to thank each person for the specific things they contributed to your work.

Step 3 List other helpers.

  • If your scholarship at the University was supported by any fellowships or scholarships, it would also be appropriate to name them in this section: "This project would have been impossible without the support of the Katherine G. Katherine Foundation, the Reese's Peanut Butter scholarship, and the Guggenheim Group."

Step 5 Put more personal thank-yous and emotional supporters last.

  • Remember that your friendships and romances may change over the years, so it might be best to keep particularly mushy romances and declarations of love out of your acknowledgment page, so you won't have to see it later if it doesn't work out.
  • It's generally best to avoid overtly personal anecdotes and inside jokes in an academic acknowledgements page. If you want to reference other students' constant joking around in the lab, say, it would be better to say, "Thanks to Joe and Katherine for their friendship in the lab" than "Thanks to Joe and Katherine for dunking my slides in Jell-O when I was hungover." [6] X Research source

Writing a Thank-You Speech

Step 1 Keep it to no more than a minute or two at most.

  • Michael Jordan's Hall of Fame induction speech was widely criticized for being tone deaf and spiteful, talking down to many former opponents and somewhat tarnishing his great legacy. Don't fall in the same trap.

Writing Other Acknowledgements

Step 1 Get creative with a literary acknowledgment page.

  • Like an academic publication, it's also important to remember to address any financial support you received during the publication of your book. If you received any artist residencies, grants, or fellowships while working on your book, you need to list them in the acknowledgments.
  • Use your writing skills to approach the acknowledgment creatively. Authors like Lemony Snicket, Neil Gaiman, J.D. Salinger, and others have used the form for witty and usually-self deprecating anecdotes about the friends and cohorts they choose to thank.

Step 2 Shout-out your friends when your album drops.

  • Friends and family
  • Other bands who helped you along the way, lending gear or instruments
  • Recording engineers and label folk
  • Musical inspirations

Step 3 Write personal notes to ask for permission about public acknowledgment.

  • In the letter, explain your desire to thank them and explain the publication or event at which you'd like to thank them. Express your gratitude for their assistance and encourage them to get in touch to approve your acknowledgment. More often than not, they'll be flattered.

Step 4 Always double-check your list, proofread, and check your spelling and pronunciation.

How to acknowledge an email with 5 samples and template

If received an email, document, invoice, or something else, you should let the sender know you got it. Here we describe how to acknowledge an email and provide 5 examples.

Blog writer

Lawrie Jones

Table of contents

We regularly send acknowledgment emails to confirm receipt of something. Whether it’s a message, document, application, invoice, or something else you've received, you should let the sender know it has arrived!

In this article, we describe how to acknowledge an email, explaining why the most effective emails are short and straightforward.

Then, we'll show you how with 5 acknowledgment email reply samples and a completely customizable template. At Flowrite, we're making acknowledgment emails as easy as possible!

How to acknowledge an email

We often tackle tough email issues, but acknowledgment emails are easy. In many cases, they'll be just a few lines long.

The purpose of acknowledgment emails is to reassure the sender that their email has been received. They're similar to confirmation emails , going light on detail (but often including next steps, dates, and deadlines, as we'll explore later).

An acknowledgment email is often used to buy you some time. You can accept an email that has been received (or an resume successfully submitted), then set out the next steps. This strategy is often used with acknowledgment emails for job applications , for example.

You can acknowledge receipt of the message and then set out the steps for a more considered reply. More information means fewer questions!

One of the reasons acknowledgment emails are so easy to write is that they use a standard format. So let's get to business and break that down.

When to send an acknowledgment email?

If you're going to send an acknowledgment email, do it as soon as you can. It's easy to forget to craft a message or send an email, but this could cause disruption or even damage your relationship.

If you're going to send an acknowledgment email, send it as soon as you've received the original message.

Acknowledgment email format

The acknowledgment email format is easy to understand and put into practice. There are three elements to every email sent to acknowledge receipt, including:

  • Subject line
  • Acknowledgment email body
  • Email ending

Here's some more detail about each section.

1. Acknowledgment email subject line

You'll want to use the subject line to convey your message quickly. State the who, what, and when and move on to the next section.

Here are some sample acknowledgment email subject lines:

  • I've received your email
  • Acknowledging receipt of your application
  • Thank you for sending (whatever they have sent)
  • Email confirmation – We have received your message
  • Thanks for sending us (whatever they have sent)
  • Email acknowledgment – thanks for sending your documents! (invoice, application, etc.)

2. Acknowledgment email body

The best emails get to business and keep it brief. Often one sentence is enough to tell the person you've received their message. It's always a good idea to thank someone who has sent you a message (even if it's an invoice or bill).

  • I can confirm that we have received your email, and I wanted to acknowledge receipt.
  • Thank you for sending me the (invoice, report, etc.). I can acknowledge that I have received it.

You can also add certain things to the email with specific details. Take the example of a job application; you may want to add some additional information to ensure they understand the process. (This can reduce the likelihood of them emailing you to ask further questions!)

  • Applications close on (date), after which we'll contact those who have secured an interview.

3. How to end an acknowledgment reply email

You’ll want to close the email with details of how to contact you, or ask for more information if it’s needed.

  • You can contact me at (contact details) if you need to chat about this project (document, report, invoice, bill, etc.).

As you'll see from our email samples, you don't need to create pages of content. The essential rule is to keep the email brief and get straight to the point – so that's what we'll do. Onward to our acknowledgment email samples...

5 acknowledgment email reply examples

We've scoured our inboxes and outboxes to identify 5 everyday situations where an acknowledgment email reply is required. You’ll find a short and simple example of how to acknowledge a job application and confirm receipt of payment.

We finish in Flowrite style with a customizable template you can shape for every situation.

1. Simple acknowledgment email reply sample

Let's start with a short and snappy email acknowledgment reply sample. It's short, easy to understand, and should take a few seconds to write and send.

2. Acknowledgment email sample to confirm receipt of documents

We're all sending documents, reports , and more by email. It's polite and professional to acknowledge receipt of documents, particularly if they're sensitive or from outside your organization.

3. Acknowledgment email to boss sample

If your boss emails you something important, you should acknowledge and reply to your boss ASAP. Don't waste time or wait; get on with crafting a message!

So, how to acknowledge an email from a boss? Check out our sample here...

4. How to acknowledge payment received via email sample

If someone has sent you cash (in a professional context or a personal one), you have to acknowledge that as soon as possible.

There's always a risk with sending money online, so this email will provide peace of mind that it's reached the right person or place.

This is how we recommend acknowledging receipt of payment.

5. Job application acknowledgment email sample

Acknowledging receipt of a job application is essential, as someone's career could rest upon it. A simple one-line message works, but enthusiastic applicants will often email you with questions.

We recommend adding as much detail as possible in your acknowledgment emails to counteract that happening (and cut out future unwanted emails!). Set out the next steps, including dates and future correspondence.

Professional acknowledgment email template

If you've read our guide this far but are still stuck on how to send an acknowledgment email, this template is for you.

We've broken down the email into blocks. Work your way through from top to bottom, adding information, editing sections, and deleting unwanted blocks.

By the end, you'll have an acknowledgment email suitable for your specific situation.

  • (You may want to list what's happening in a job application process, for example. Bullet points are great for this purpose!)

Acknowledging final words

Thanks for reading this guide! We acknowledge that you should now have all the skills (and samples) to create great emails.

Acknowledgment emails really are as simple as a couple of sentences, so don't over-complicate them. Instead, learn the principles (or how to cut and paste) and get on with the rest of the day.

Biden thanks Kenya’s Ruto for sending police to Haiti, defends keeping U.S. forces from the mission

President Biden on Thursday expressed deep appreciation to Kenyan President William Ruto for the coming deployment of Kenyan police forces to help quell gang violence in Haiti and he defended his decision to withhold American forces from the mission in the beleaguered Caribbean nation.

The United States has agreed to contribute $300 million to a multinational force that will include 1,000 Kenyan police officers, but Biden argued that an American troop presence in Haiti would raise “all kinds of questions that can easily be misrepresented.”

The Democrat came into office in 2021 pledging to end U.S. involvement in so-called endless wars in the aftermath of 20 years of conflict in Afghanistan and Iraq.

“Haiti is in an area of the Caribbean that is very volatile,” Biden said at a news conference with Ruto, who was in Washington for the first state visit to the U.S. by an African leader since 2008. “There’s a lot going on in this hemisphere. So we’re in a situation where we want to do all we can without us looking like America once again is stepping over and deciding this is what must be done.”

Ruto, who will be honored by Biden with a state dinner on the White House grounds in the evening, also gave a climate policy address and met with former President Obama.

Ruto is facing legal challenges in Nairobi over the decision to commit Kenyan forces to a conflict thousands of miles from home when his own country has no shortage of economic and security challenges. He said that Kenya, as a democracy, has a duty to help.

“Kenya believes that the responsibility of peace and security anywhere in the world, including in Haiti, is the collective responsibility of all nations and all people who believe in freedom, self-determination, democracy and justice,” Ruto said. “And it is the reason why Kenya took up this responsibility.”

Some analysts say his move could run afoul of a Kenyan High Court ruling in January that found the deployment unconstitutional because of a lack of reciprocal agreements between Kenya and Haiti. A deal was signed in March, before Ariel Henry resigned as Haiti’s prime minister, to try to salvage the plan.

Kenya’s moving ahead “gives the impression that the country is lawless and does not believe in the rule of law,” said Macharia Munene, an international relations professor at United States International University-Africa.

A difficult assignment is ahead for the Kenyan officers.

Haiti has endured poverty, political instability and natural disasters for decades. International intervention in Haiti has a complicated history. A United Nations-approved stabilization mission to Haiti that started in June 2004 was marred by a sexual abuse scandal and the introduction of cholera, which killed nearly 10,000 people. The mission ended in October 2017.

Biden and Ruto also called on economies around the globe to take action to reduce the enormous debt burden crushing Kenya and other developing nations.

The call to action, termed the Nairobi-Washington Vision, comes as Biden presses his appeal to African nations that the U.S. can be a better partner than economic rival China. Beijing has been deepening its investment on the continent — often with high-interest loans and other difficult financing terms.

Biden and Ruto want creditor nations to reduce financing barriers for developing nations that have been constrained by high debt burdens. They also called on international financial institutions to coordinate debt relief and support through multilateral banks and institutions providing better financing terms.

The White House announced $250 million in grants for the International Development Assn., part of the World Bank, to assist poor countries facing crises.

Separately, a $1.2-trillion government funding bill passed by Congress in March allows the U.S. to lend up to $21 billion to an International Monetary Fund trust that provides zero-interest loans to support low-income countries.

“Too many nations are forced to make a choice between development and debt, between investing in their people and paying back their creditors,” Biden said.

U.N. Security Council votes to send Kenya-led multinational force to Haiti

The multinational force’s main mission will be to help combat violent gangs engaged in killings and kidnappings in the troubled country.

Oct. 2, 2023

An Associated Press analysis of a dozen countries most indebted to China — including Kenya — found the debt is consuming an ever-greater amount of tax revenue needed to keep schools open, provide electricity and pay for food and fuel.

Behind the scenes is China’s reluctance to forgive debt and its extreme secrecy about how much money it has lent and on what terms, which has kept other major lenders from stepping in to help.

Kenya’s debt-to-GDP ratio tops 70%, with the bulk of it owed to China. Credit ratings agency Fitch estimates the Kenya will spend almost one-third of its government revenues just on interest payments this year.

The Biden administration has praised Kenya for stepping up in Haiti when so few other countries have agreed to do so. Biden also announced his intention to designate Kenya as a major non-NATO ally, an acknowledgment of the growing security partnership between the countries.

The designation, while largely symbolic, reflects how Kenya has grown from a regional partner that has long cooperated with U.S. counterterrorism operations on the continent to a major global influence — even extending its reach into the Western Hemisphere. Kenya will be the first sub-Saharan African country to receive the status.

Ruto arrived in Washington on Wednesday and began the visit by meeting with Biden and tech executives from Silicon Valley and Kenya’s growing tech sector.

The White House announced it was working with Congress to make Kenya the first country in Africa to benefit from funding through the CHIPS and Science Act, a 2022 law that aims to reinvigorate the computer chip sector within the United States through tens of billions of dollars in targeted government support.

“I think we have a historic moment to explore investment opportunities between Kenya and the United States,” Ruto said.

Despite the optimistic outlook, Kenya has seen a sharp decline in foreign investment since 2017. Net investment for foreign companies has fallen from $1.35 billion in 2017 to $394 million in 2022, according to the World Bank.
