Keynote & PowerPoint

Powerpoint is probably the most familiar presentation tool to us all. If you haven’t used it lately, you probably remember the rudimentary design templates and cheesy 3D text animations of the 90s and early 2000s. PowerPoint is better now than it was then, making it a solid choice for many businesses needing basic meeting display software.

Keynote , Apple’s version of a presentation tool, matches all of PowerPoint’s features, but with a modern and minimalistic appearance. Apple’s approach to minimalistic UI makes this tool a bit more straightforward and less clunky, but it’s still an office app more than anything.

The largest drawback to Keynote is its exclusivity: Apple devices can run a Keynote presentation, but other devices cannot do so without compromises.

The two apps do similar things using very different interfaces. They’re good at what they do, but both slide tools were created for broad and basic presentation purposes rather than the needs of churches. You won’t find Scripture and song integrations here in any way, making options less attractive as Bible presentation software, as well as for larger churches that need effective all-in-one church service software options.

BibleShow is an application specifically built for the mission of ministry with a singular focus: displaying Scripture passages. It’s free to use and offers some novel and useful features that generic platforms do not.

While similar to Microsoft Powerpoint in its ability to create slide-style decks for big screen display, BibleShow also allows users to search and import scriptures (across many different translations and 60+ languages).

The BibleShow church presentation software has been built by a small community of volunteers, which can make it tough for them to stay on top of bug fixes and user support. This may also be a reason the app is Windows-only.

One glance at the website shows that the app is pretty dated in terms of aesthetics and UX, too.

For a small or rural church that is focused solely on Scripture display, BibleShow may be a helpful tool. However, it leaves a lot of boxes unchecked for most worship services, especially if you’re looking to incorporate Scripture into a more immersive presentation experience.

VerseView is another free application designed specifically for church presentations. It was originally created for one small church to display English and Malayalam (spoken mostly in Kerala, India) verses for their bilingual audience, the software garnered interest from other organizations and was released for wider public use.

Since then it has developed considerably beyond what BibleShow can do. The application contains a Bible search function and a pre-loaded song lyrics database – although the majority of those pre-loaded lyrics are limited to Malayalam.

VerseView is available on Mac and PC and also has sister apps like VerseView Songbook and VerseView Mobile Bible that your congregation can use on the go.

With a better UI and cross-platform (Mac and PC) compatibility, VerseView comes out on top. It also offers remote control via Wi-Fi.

Churches in the 10/40 window or Southeast Asia (or those with significant populations from those regions) may find some unexpected touches here, such as a Khmer Bible database and support for Tagalog and Arabic.

Still, the experience here is limiting compared to what more fully fleshed out apps can do. You’ll have an easier time displaying Scripture, but a harder time doing the other things you may want your presentation software to do.

Google Slides

Another cloud-based presentation tool, Google Slides is a little like PowerPoint Light. While this platform is capable of creating slide-show presentations, it is limited to copy-and-paste text input, which takes extra time and leaves room for errors and typos. You won’t find any Bible importing tools here.

Since Google Slides is a web-based presentation tool, it does fall into the pros for reliability and accessibility – anyone with a Mac or PC setup can access it, and the program runs seamlessly in the Google Chrome browser. Another perk is that the tool is very easy to use and 100 percent free.

However, as a worship presentation tool Google Slides has some flaws. It doesn’t offer advanced video controls or add much value to your live-stream service, and you won’t find any song databases or Scripture importing tools here.

If you’re looking to move beyond PowerPoint as a presentation software, Google Slides is mostly moving in the wrong direction.

Canva is widely known as a place for amateur graphic design and historically has been utilized to easily design graphics for Instagram and other social channels. However, Canva has worked to broaden its versatility and has launched an online presentation tool that competes with Powerpoint and Google Slides.

This new presentation feature allows users to create and share presentations using attractive design templates, professional stock photos, and graphics elements. The presentation tool is completely web-based, making it accessible on nearly any device (Mac, PC, mobile, and more).

On the flip side, completely web-based tools are totally dependent on an internet connection, and there isn’t much you can do during an outage or with poor signal. Browser-based tools also consume a lot of memory bandwidth and inevitably come with increasing levels of performance demand.

If you’re looking to create basic worship presentations and social assets for your church in one central place, Canva might be worth a look. Just be aware that, like the other general-purpose tools, Canva doesn’t have any Bible-specific features.

Prezi , a slightly newer presentation tool, is the last of web-based apps on our list. Prezi’s strong suit is that it has veered away from stagnant, linear presentations and embraced a non-linear presentation approach where the presenter can seamlessly navigate between topics and revisit ideas.

This non-linear approach can certainly work in your favor by creating more engagement and interactivity – but can also appear a bit cheesy or cheap if not designed and executed well.

I mean it’s such a painfully inefficient way of doing things—especially when there are so many superior and free church presentation software that take just a few clicks to setup and get going.

If you want a PowerPoint alternative or simply want to learn more about the best church presentation software available for free to support your worship services, you should read this article.

A screen displaying lyrics and Bible texts is more or less replacing printed material at most places of worship. Depending on how it is used, the screen can be a purposeful aid or an unfortunate distraction.

Choosing the right church software to run your slides is therefore an important decision to support the worship environment.

If you’re on a tight budget, here are a number of free worship software in no particular order that offer a variety of features to suit your church presentation needs.

13 of the best free presentation software for easy worship in your church

One of the most popular open source worship presentation program out there, OpenLP packs a ton of features for managing and displaying songs, Bible verses, images, videos (not video backgrounds though) and more.

It facilitates custom alerts, Bible import through CSV files, CCLI/SongSelect integration, PowerPoint file import etc.

OpenLP can import songs from a wide variety of sources like Easyslides, Opensong, Videopsalm, Zionworx, DreamBeam, MediaShout etc.

Managing Bible verses

Bibles can be imported from OSIS by the CrossWire Bible Society, any CSV file, OpenSong, Zefania etc.

It may not have all kinds of bells and whistles when it comes to features, but it does just enough to meet the most important church projection software requirements.

OpenSong can easily double up as a worship song management tool—you can type in songs yourself or import them from CCLI’s SongSelect
Or you can always go to any site providing lyrics and chords for worship songs and just copy paste from there
Songs can be stored with chords, which of course won’t appear in presented slides. There’s a quick song transpose option also if you want to practice a song in a different key—it’s extremely convenient for musicians
OpenSong also provides many free song packs in various languages to help get you started
OpenSong’s website hosts a wide variety of Bibles that you can download for free and import into your system.
Zefania XML Bibles, NRSV, NIV, KJV and more are available and supported for import apart from Bibles in other languages (French, Filipino, Portuguese, German etc.)
Any image file can be set as a background for songs and Bible verses

Bible versions are limited as there’s no native ability to import Bibles from third party sources

Is it an easy worship software? Maybe not, but once you spend some time to learn it, there’s no looking back—you’ll love it.

Like Quelea, VideoPsalm can import songbooks from several sources—EasySlides, EasyWorship 2009, MediaShout, OpenLP, OpenLyrics format, OpenSong (Chords get imported too), Psalmo and plain text.
Moreover, the VideoPsalm online library itself provides over 10,000 worship songs!
Songs can also be stored with chords in ABC or Do-Ré-Mi notation apart from ChordPro compatibility.

Adding songs to Praisenter is not rocket science. It comes with an import facility, which facilitates bulk import of songs, provided they are in ChurchView or OpenLyrics format
Song parts (verse, chorus, bridge etc.) can be tagged easily—in fact, we can add unlimited number of parts to a song!
There’s a Quick Send panel to present songs immediately too (with hot key support)

EpicWorship is a free, open source church projection and presentation software focusing on simplicity. It comes with just the most important list of features without complicating anything.

EpicWorship facilitates slide projection with image and video backgrounds (MP4 H.264-encoded only), import of OpenSong Bible formats and playback of audio files (MP3 or AAC).

Like OpenSong, it’s simple and easy to install and use.

12. LyricsPro

LyricsPro is an Android church presentation app.

Using a schedule interface, LyricsPro can be used to present lyrics, videos, images and PPT slides. Font formatting and setting up image and video backgrounds are also possible. Songs can be imported from SongSelect too.

This can be best used in small group worship or band rehearsal sessions I think.

12. Praise Base Presenter

Praise Base Presenter is an open source church presentation software to project worship lyrics, photos (JPG only) and Bible passages.

Apart from a simple song editor, it can also import Zefania XML Bibles and display lyrics in two languages.

This is a free plugin for PowerPoint 2007 that adds quite a bit of church friendly muscle to PowerPoint.

We used MediaShout in my previous parish. When one of our volunteer projectionists could not be there, we used an IPad 9.7 to remotely control the video. It was a bit small. An IPad Pro is preferable. We used the IPad Pro 12′ as well. Since MediaShout is both available in Windows and MacOS, there never was any problem controlling the program remotely, without physically using the “projection booth” (where the control computer is located).

I don’t know about the other programs but I think it should be possible with any other program, since we did it using Teamviewer which is a program allowing you to use any computer on your network in remote.

I still fall back to PowerPoint. I have tried various other products, and while they can do some creative and different things, they all seem to be unable to do some essential thing. One of my main gripes is that many of them cannot do the simple task of displaying a verse with a section of it in a different color for emphasis. In the end, it is just easier and quicker to create my songs and sermon verses in PowerPoint. No CCLI plugin, but I have many songs already created and ready to go anyway. Why reinvent the wheel?

Just thought I’d point out that VideoPsalm can do this. Once you select your Verse(s) and add them to your agenda, you can right click them to convert them into an editable format in which you can do colors, fonts, and all kinds of things.

Exactly what I need too. People don’t want to see the bible verse by verse, a highlighted verse is way better.

VideoPsalm is an awesome piece of software. As a fledgling church, we were looking for presentation software that was free since we had no budget. I tried a few different ones but ended up with VideoPsalm. There is a learning curve to get started but once you get the hang of it, it’s incredibly easy to use. I can’t think of a feature I’ve needed that it couldn’t do. Video background, song imports, multiple import formats (PPT, PDF, etc), and more. Support is also great. I’ve emailed the author a few times and always get a prompt response. If you’re looking for church presentation software, even if you have a huge budget, check out VideoPsalm and you’ll love it.

Hi, we have been using Mediashout 3.5 for about 10 years, all of a sudden it just stopped working. The new version won’t run on this old computer, and when I installed on my own newer, the program is so completely different I cant comprehend myself having time to learn it, and then teach a bunch of student volunteers. Our needs are very simple. ALL of our songs and readings are already in MS Word .doc files. We don’t use any published songbooks or bibles, no video, no audio, no pdf, nothing. I only need a program that can handle matching the pages already set up in the .doc file (text is 48 pt) and populate it onto multiple slides. That’s it. Old mediashout did that just fine. New mediashout has way more features than we will ever use, and I just don’t have time to learn it.

I just tried VideoPsalm, and although it appears it should be able to do that, it doesn’t. Before I try the other 12 on the list, if anyone knows one that has just this one function, I would really appreciate it. Thanks.

We use it in two separate ministries elementary and junior high and off-campus events like camps and retreats. It is very easy to use, I do elementary kids ministry and my kids are able to maneuver around mediashout and use it during our celebration services

MediaShout has allowed our house of worship to increase our production value and provide a more immersive, intentional, and effective ministry to those who attend our services. My favorite features of MediaShout was the amount of customization options the software allows for. I stopped needing to do so much editing work on graphics before importing them, and simply create the exact look I need for a service right within the application.

MediaShout transformed our worship service from fragmented and “unprofessional” (I hate that word, but truly it was rough) into something that has flow, form and makes worship run smoothly. Our congregation is older, and we have a gentlemen in his 80s using the program on Sunday morning. That is how easy it is to use! I create the presentations in about an hour, using saved cues, creating new cues and inserting Bible text for each week. It is a great time saver for me, which is very important, since I am one of a two person staff at the church! My experience in creating and presenting with MediaShout has been very good. I do recommend it.

The MediaShout people are super helpful and are constantly working to improve their product. They don’t sell you something and then leave you hanging. One time I sent in a question just before the holidays. I got an answer as soon as the office was open after Christmas was over. I followed the instructions step by step and it totally fixed my problem. They are very friendly, knowledgeable, quick to respond, and speak my language. Oh, and they love the Lord Jesus Christ and live to serve him, and in so doing, they help us and they help meet the needs of the churches that buy their product.

We deploy media shout to many of our clients who prefer a user friendly app that doesnt bog down your computer but still offers a clean, punchy presentation. Media Shout has a great layout and platform that lends itself to a quick learning curve.

I am very pleased with the software and think that anyone who needs a quality presenter software should definitely put this on the top of your try list. The product is remarkably simple to teach others how to use. The software is very adaptable for systems. I like the fact that it can handle multiple displays so easily.

Among the inevitable last-minute special event requests was a count down timer to display on the main screens during intermission so everyone would know when it was time to continue the concert. Now, I am not the regular Media Shout guy, in fact I don’t think I had ever actually used it for a live event before. This responsibility falls on me so rarely that I usually just go with PowerPoint. But, a count down timer? I did a quick search on how to create a count down timer in PowerPoint. After skimming, I realized this was not the way to go. So, I opened up MediaShout to see what I could figure out. Oh, my, that was too easy. I dropped in a background to match the concert theme and added a count down timer, gave it a nice font and matching color. Ta-da. The event organizers were happy and it worked flawlessly.

Mediashout let us create a more engaging service for our guests and congregation. We were able to use a wide variety of backgrounds and animations. Additionally we could automate slides like announcements to run on a timer until ready to proceed. The ease of adding media sources like audio and video gave us new avenues to share content with our live audience. Mediashout provided advanced presentation options for our church, giving us lyrics, slides, transitions, media playing capability, and verse sharing on the screens in our sanctuary. Staff and volunteers were able to setup everything that needed to be on the screens for services. We did this in advance, saved the files, and went live on Sundays. Mediashout expanded our capabilities from Powerpoint and incorporate more media, which helped keep our congregation engaged.

MediaShout feels like a really close knit community, where users support each other well, but also MediaShout ‘the company’, support their users well. I love the software, and what we can achieve with it, in serving our church locally. MediaShout is fully featured yet easy to use. It’s easy to train on. Their support is second to none, and they really care about how the software works for you in your situation. They are passionate about making their software easy for us as users, to seamlessly support the process of worship and sharing the gospel.
