Summer season is the hottest season of the year with longer days which are warm and shorter nights. Specifically on summer solstice, the days become the longest and nights are the shortest. This season begins from March and lasts up until the end of June. If we consider the whole period, as the days get longer, the temperature rises and when the days start becoming shorter again, the temperature begins to fall. The temperature is highest in the middle of the day which makes it difficult to do any activity during the day. People prefer to be out and about during the early morning time or in the evening after the sun has set.

Along with high temperatures, there are also winds that are dusty, hot and dry. In summer season, people can experience heat stroke, dehydration, diarrhea and other issues related to high temperatures. Rivers, ponds and lakes dry up in regions where the temperature is very high. This causes several problems for people living in that area. Even other nearby areas experience water shortage. This negatively affects not only human beings but also other birds, animals and plants.

To reduce the heat effect, people tend to wear light cotton clothes so that they feel cool under in hot weather. We should consume more water and eat more fruits to avoid dehydration and sun stroke.

Although there are many inconveniences, there are several positive points also about this season. This is the time when schools take a break and children can go on summer vacations to enjoy other places. It is also the season when fruits like pineapple and mangoes are available.

Summer is the hottest season among the others and initiates and prepares the clouds for the rainy season. The days are longer and hotter during this time of year, which leads to comparatively shorter nights. The sun glows brightly at its peak during the noon time which makes it unbearable to be under direct sunshine.

Summer Fun:

Summer is the season in which most of the holidays and parties are conducted due to the clear weather. Students get their longest leave during summer season and they always demand most fun after a long stretched exam time.

This time of the year is best for picnicking in the hilly regions and swimming ideas. Beaches are almost crowded during the summer season as the water soothes your skin after being under the sun for a long time. The sky will be clear and blue, which makes it enjoyable to watch them.

Most of the time people enjoy walking and shopping during the early daytime before the sun start to flare its brightness. This time of the day will be more soothing rather than the burning effect. It is the season when cold is most preferred and the businesses with such products will be at high demand.

Summer is the season when parties and other functions can be held without any problems. It is considered to be the season for open fun and will have a brighter moon, which is ideal for such enjoyments.

Summer costume is almost of cotton fabric, which will help your skin from burning hot environment. You can see people walking on the street wearing shorts, sleeveless, sunglasses, casuals, etc., made of light fabric that allows your skin to breathe free in this season.

Summer Exhaustions:

The main drawback of summer season is its hot weather. Hot and dry wind will be blowing throughout the day, which makes it more difficult to bear the weather. This time of the year also brings with it many health issues like dehydration, diarrhea, etc.

The business sector finds it more difficult to get profits during the summer season as people will be either indoor enjoying the comfort of their home or partying. The midday sun will be unbearable for elderly people, even if you enjoy your indoor comfort as well.

Lakes, ponds and other freshwater bodies lack water due to the high amount of evaporation, which in turn leads to water scarcity. This will considerably control us from using drinking water and other uses to a minimum level. Most of the time, cases of sunstrokes are also reported due to the recent increase in global warming. But, the enjoyment of summer season outweighs the drawbacks.

Summer season happens to be one of my favourite seasons. There is so much to look forward during the summer season that I cannot help but have a wonderful time.

The Summer Vacation:

I still remember during my school days how I used to make elaborate plans for my summer vacation. The moment summer season used to kick in, all of us would start elaborating our plans for the vacation. Our parents made it a point to always take us out somewhere during the summer season. The vacation was something we really looked forward to.

Going out meant lots of shopping as we often brought new clothes. Mom used to make all the fancy stuff for us and our excitement was always at the peak during the summer season.

The King of Fruits:

Another key reason as to why I absolutely love the summer season is because the king of fruits, mango too arrives in this season. I love mangoes and my father knows about my obsessions. So, as soon as the summer season used to start, he used to ask me when I would expect mangoes. It is also the season of several other fruits which I cherish dearly.

Fun with Friends:

While we used to go on a trip during the summer season, it never lasted the whole vacation. So, after we come back from the vacation, we used to start our community games. This too was a whole lot of fun. There were so many of us who often got into different groups. Some years, we even used to plan championship league which added the competitive streak to our games too.

Everyone had something or the other to look forward during the summer season. Be it the dancing class or the swimming sessions. Some elderly members from the community used to participate in yoga or meditation sessions as well. There were games galore ranging from badminton to carom, football, cricket and more. So, our summer season was always packed with a lot of different activities.

Now that we all tend to spend so much time on our mobile phone, these activities seem to be fading away a little. Often, a lot of us spend the whole summer season simply buried in our phone, surfing the endless pictures of people we do not really know and reading stories that have nothing to do with us.

Ideally, I believe that summer season is best spent with the people we know and the things we love. Going out, making friends, exploring new things is just one way to ensure that your summer season is the one you won’t forget.

Seasons Change, Life goes on:

Like everything else, time passes away and one season gives way to the next. So, no matter how much you cherish summer season, it is bound to pass and give way to the next season. The good thing about life is that you can wait next year for it to come back again and the same fun and memories can again be relived.

So, what are you planning to do this summer season? You do not mandatorily need to go out or engage in sports. In order to have the best summer season of your life, all you have to do is make sure that you are engaged in something which you love. It could be something as simple as reading books or as difficult as climbing a mountain. The choice is yours.

Happiness often is an inside job and if you can attain true happiness and bliss, you have managed to have a great shot at life. So, let this summer season be the one you will always recall with a smile!

The Indian subcontinent witness six seasons round the year, the lengthiest being the summer season. It is a dry season with hot air and starts early in April and goes on till July. In summer, the couple of hours of the morning are charming. Numerous individuals wake up at a young hour early in the day and go for a morning walk. In March the sun does not turn out to be excessively hot before twelve. Be that as it may, by April the sun ends up hot by 10 a.m. The sun turns out to be exceptionally hot by twelve in May and June and singing breezes likewise start to blow. The summer season brings hot and dry weather in the Mediterranean area and rainy weather in the East Asian part. People living in urban areas may be exposed to scorching weather, and due to unbearable summer heat, they visit cool places, seaside resorts, spend time in pools or camp at places or just stay in the comfort of air-conditioned rooms to escape the extreme heat.

While the hot and humid weather is a concern, summer season is the time when travellers prefer to visit places all over the world. During monsoon or winter, the rainy and chilling weather keeps us away from doing a lot of things which summer seasons allows us to do. When things aren’t too hot is when you get to enjoy, culture, shopping, dining.

The summer mornings are pleasant and as time advances the temperature reaches its peaks. In the afternoon, the sun rays are scorching, and the temperature falls by evening. Summer season is when we have to drink plenty of water as the hot climates make us thirsty regardless of whether we are at home or outside the home.

In some countries, during summer season, river, ponds, lakes or other water bodies dry up due to lack of water. It brings difficulties in water supply and availability of water in some parts of the world. Like human beings, even animals and birds also travel to places in search of water, and some birds die during the summer season due to unbearable temperature and sunstrokes. Some fauna also fire up during the summer season when they get dehydrated or due to sun’s direct heat. Leaves and plants dries up if not properly watered and cared.

In the brighter side, it is the season when students get a break from their schools for the 2 or 3-months vacation. People prefer to go on trips and it is the time when people have some family time together. During summer, people also love enjoying their evening and night under clear skies, ravishing moon and spends time even on the beachside.

It is the best time for the festival and such activities where there is a lot of good food, music and evening parties. Summer evenings are also beautiful because of glittery and sparkling city lights when many people are out of home for visiting malls and relaxing with friends and family.

In the southern hemisphere, December to march is the months of summer, June-august are the months of summer in Northern hemisphere. Summer also reminds us that we must save all the precious resources like water and electricity when they are in abundance. Saving up of resources that are abundantly available will let us enjoy it when it is in scarce. We must save water and electricity as it contributes to global warming.

After or during the summer season we can expect rain, which is a common phenomenon. Because of high heat, water evaporates and the vapors turn into clouds and fall as rain. Anywhere around the world, summer season is mostly warm.

The summer season also brings bright and long days that unveils the beauty of nature where grasses are green, flowers bloom and animal life return to fields, though in some places plants get dried up due to insufficient water availability.

People dress in bright and light materials to feel comfortable under the hot sun, and everyone will be spotted in summer dresses, sunglasses, shorts, etc. During the summer season, the fashion game is on the point as bright colors are the trend for the season.

Scientists believe that rising heat levels during summer each year is a result of global warming and they predict unbearable heat levels if it left unchecked. True to their admonition, during summer the temperature at different parts of the world has reached record high for the last couple of years, and it might result in severe catastrophes if not addressed properly.

Summer has a clear association with vibrancy. The summer season also gives life to everything around us; plants bloom, animal wake up from their hibernation, people enjoy nigh lives, wear bright clothes and everything feels so alive keeping aside the heat.

For some people, summer could be an unfriendly season backed by discomfort caused by high heat. Some people consider it as a season of fruits where they get to enjoy mangoes, litchi, berries, bananas, pineapple, etc. The farmers prepare their fields and sow their seeds at this time. Though there is an increase in humidity and temperature, people from all countries enjoy the summer season for their own reasons like getting a chance to spend quality time with family and friends.

The summer season can effectively be used to solidify empowerment. By nature, summer is a productive season, which is evident when you look around. So naturally, you will feel very excited, as you can engage with thrilling activities. Even though much is said about the summer season, none of the four seasons are strictly superior to one another. Each season has its advantages and disadvantages.

250 Words Essay on My Favourite Season Summer

Summer, the season of warmth and vibrancy, is my favourite season. It’s not just the clear blue skies and the abundance of sunlight that I adore, but also the opportunities and experiences that this season brings with it.

The Vividness of Summer

Summer is synonymous with life and vivacity. As the trees wear a lush green look and flowers bloom in their full glory, the world seems to awaken from a long sleep. The long days also mean more daylight to enjoy outdoor activities. Whether it’s a game of beach volleyball or a serene walk in the park, summer provides the perfect setting.

The Taste of Summer

The season of summer also brings with it a bounty of fresh fruits and vegetables. The taste of juicy mangoes, watermelons, and berries is a joy that is unique to summer. These fruits not only satisfy our taste buds but also provide the necessary hydration and nutrients to combat the heat.

Summer and Personal Growth

Summer is also a time for personal growth and exploration. The longer days provide ample time to pick up a new hobby, learn a new skill, or even take a trip to a new place. The break from academic rigors allows one to explore interests outside the curriculum, thus fostering holistic development.

In essence, summer is not just a season; it’s a celebration of life, growth, and exploration. It’s a time when the world around us is at its vibrant best, and the opportunities for personal growth are limitless. This is why summer remains my favourite season, a season that fills my heart with warmth and joy.

500 Words Essay on My Favourite Season Summer

Summer, the season of vibrant life and relentless energy, is my favourite season. Despite the scorching heat, the season embodies a unique blend of life’s simple pleasures and the grandeur of nature. The season’s essence is not just in the high temperatures, but also in the opportunities it presents for exploration and self-discovery.

The Glory of the Sun

The most striking feature of summer is the omnipresent sun, a celestial body that becomes a constant companion during this season. Its golden rays, though fierce, bring out the vibrancy in everything they touch. The sun is not merely a source of light and warmth but a symbol of the relentless spirit of life. It stands as a testament to the power of perseverance, illuminating the world even in the harshest conditions, teaching us the value of resilience and determination.

Summer: A Season of Discovery

Summer is also a season of discovery and exploration. The long, sunlit days provide ample time to embark on adventures, explore new places, and immerse oneself in novel experiences. The season’s heat may be challenging, but it is also a call to action, urging us to step out of our comfort zones and face the world head-on. It is during these summer adventures that we often discover hidden aspects of our personalities, learning to appreciate our strengths and accept our weaknesses.

The Vibrancy of Life

Summer is synonymous with life’s vibrancy. From the lush green foliage of trees to the colourful bloom of flowers, the season paints a picture of life in its most dynamic form. The chirping of birds, the buzzing of insects, and the rustling of leaves create a symphony of natural sounds that add to the season’s charm. This vibrancy is not just an aesthetic delight but a reminder of the beauty of life and the importance of living each moment to the fullest.

Summer’s Social Aspects

The social aspect of summer is another reason for my fondness for the season. Summer breaks from college provide an opportunity to spend time with family and friends, strengthening bonds and creating cherished memories. The season’s warmth fosters a sense of community as people gather for barbecues, beach outings, and summer festivals. These social interactions not only provide joy but also help develop our social skills and understanding of interpersonal relationships.

In conclusion, my affection for summer is not just because of the warm weather or the extended daylight. It is a favourite because of the life lessons it imparts, the opportunities for self-discovery it provides, and the social interactions it fosters. The season’s vibrancy and energy serve as a constant reminder to embrace life, face challenges head-on, and appreciate the beauty in every moment. Summer, with all its heat and brilliance, truly symbolizes the zest for life.

Summer Season Essay

100 Words Essay on Summer Season

The summer months are the hottest of the year, which makes outdoor activities nearly impossible throughout the day. Due to its cooling impact, most people like morning walks. The wind is hot, dry, and dusty all day long. Due to the summer, people can occasionally develop health issues. The following are some guidelines we should abide by this summer:

The weather is quite sunny.

We ought to dress in relaxed cotton clothing.

To combat the summer heat, we should consume cold foods and beverages.

To avoid dehydration and heat exhaustion, we must drink lots of water.

To protect birds from the summer heat, we should provide a bowl of water and some rice in the hallway.

200 Words Essay on Summer Season

Out of the four seasons of the year, summer is the warmest. It starts on the Summer Solstice day and finishes on the Autumnal Equinox day. Because the Southern and Northern Hemispheres are in opposite directions, it is winter when it is summer in the Southern Hemisphere. The season of extreme heat, dry weather, and intense monsoons contribute to growing death tolls. The high temperatures during this season allow the weather to warm up, which causes droughts with limited water supplies, scarcity, or complete water shortages in some areas. This season's sweltering weather, which causes issues for people and wildlife, is brought on by heat waves and temperature rises.

Take Care Of Your Health In Summers

Dehydration brought on by summer heat waves is a common cause of human and animal mortality. High heat waves cause the summer's worst extreme weather, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. According to NASA, human-caused global warming is causing summertime temperatures to rise yearly. As a result, it is wise to drink plenty of water all season long. In the summer, men and women should typically drink 3.7 litres of water daily, according to the Food and Nutrition Board of the National Academy of Sciences. People who engage in strenuous activity must consume more water than usual.

500 Words Essay on Summer Season

Summer is one of the major seasons in a tropical nation like India. The start of summer in March and its duration through the end of July. Typically, summer brings with it hot, dry weather. During this time of year, the nights are shorter and the days longer. In the summer, the heat lasts from early morning until late at night.

These months are Jyeshta and Aashaadha, according to the Hindu calendar. The summer season is experienced in the Indian states of Gujarat, Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh, and Chhattisgarh since the tropic of cancer crosses the northern hemisphere. Some regions experience temperature spikes of up to 50 degrees Celsius.

Activities During the Summer

Children enjoy the summer the most since it is when they are released from their academic responsibilities and can spend their days playing and causing trouble. Additionally, youngsters travel during the summer with their families to cool locations or beaches to escape the summer heat.

During the summer, kids and seniors spend most of their time indoors and entertain themselves with various games and activities. Children should be taught swimming and other water activities during this time of year so their bodies and minds can stay in shape while sweltering outside.

In addition to these activities, kids frequently consume smoothies, juices, and ice cream to stay calm and hydrated. When mangoes are in season, we often see kids picking them off of mango trees or standing next to them to harvest the ripe fruit. We also receive fruits like jackfruit, watermelon, guava, and lychee.

Even though summer is the warmest season, most of us may attempt to enjoy it fully. In the hot weather, adults, as well as children, find time to unwind and recharge. Everything will appear perfect and joyful when the Sun is beaming brightly above us.

Season's Effects

Both natural and artificial elements contribute to summer's extreme heat. These reasons also bring about numerous changes in the climate. The youngsters enjoy it despite how dry the season is.

Additionally, excessive heat can cause many issues and is dangerous. Dehydration is one issue that it frequently causes in individuals. In addition to making you feel weak and nauseous, it can also make you die. Therefore, we must consume a lot of water to keep the body hydrated. In this season, little ponds, rivers, and wells all dry up. The groundwater level drops, and situations like drought occur in some locations.

Advantages of Summer Season

Despite being hot and dusty, the summer is a blessing. All water bodies are evaporating due to the sun's harsh rays at this time, which allows the rainy season to start officially. The monsoon rains, which last for months, are caused by the low pressure that develops over India at this time.

Disadvantages of Summer Season

Most people are seen wearing light dresses, sandals, and sunglasses. A hot, dusty wind blows about noon and worsens things on certain days.

People experience severe heat from dawn till dusk since the days get so hot and long and find it more challenging to travel.

People prefer to stay inside. This wind, known as "Loo" in the northern region of India, is dangerous to be exposed to.

My Favourite Season essay: There are six seasons in India. Summer (Grishma Ritu), Monsoon (Varsha Ritu), Autumn (Sharad Ritu), Pre-Winter (Hemant Ritu), Winter (Shishir Ritu), and Spring (Vasant Ritu). In this article, you are going to learn how to write an essay/paragraph on my favourite season or the season I like most. Here, we’ve included essays/paragraphs on all the six seasons of India. So, let’s begin.

Table of Contents

Essay on My Favourite Season Winter

Winter is the best of all seasons and I like this season the most. December, January and February are the three winter months. The weather at this time is very pleasant. In this season we can work hard but do not get tired. We put on warm clothes and enjoy the bright sunshine. The nights are very cold. The night in a warm bed under a quilt is very comfortable.

Paddy is harvested in this season. Colourful seasonal flowers grow in gardens. Fish, vegetables and fruits are also available in plenty in this season. They are very cheap also. This is the most suitable time for holding picnics in the open air. We can go out and hold excursions in winter.

Various types of fairs are held and festivals like Saraswati Puja, Christmas, and New Year’s Day are celebrated in this season. While we enjoy the cool comfort of the winter, the poor people suffer a lot during these months. They do not have warm clothes to protect them from cold. Overall I love this season very much.

My Favourite Season Summer Essay

Of all the six seasons, my favourite season is summer. It is the hottest season of the year. The summer season starts in March and ends in June. In this season the sun shines brightly. The best part of this season is summer vacation. This is a great relief from a hectic schedule, home works, and exam pressure. I enjoy the vacation by going to a beach or a hill station with friends and families. In summer I like to have cold drinks, lassi, ice cream, and coconut water.

We get many fruits in this season like mango, watermelon, litchi, jackfruit, pineapple etc. Many festivals such as charak puja, Rama Navami, Baisakhi, Rabindra Jayanti, etc. are celebrated in this season. There are varieties of fruits and vegetables available during this season. Many beautiful flowers like Lilly, Marigold, Roses, Dahlia, and Sunflower bloom in this season. Summer is just a wonderful season with so much fun and enjoyment.

My Favourite season Rainy Season

The season I like most is the Rainy season or monsoon. In India, this season begins in mid-June and ends in early September. Rainy season comes after the scorching heat of summer season and gives us relief. Clouds float here and there in the sky. Lightning and thunder occur frequently. People can be seen with umbrellas and raincoats. Dry rivers and lakes become full.

Farmers plough their fields. Children become very happy. They make paper boats and dance in the rain. A variety of fruits, vegetables, and crops grow in this season. Beautiful flowers blossom in this time. Beautiful rainbows can be seen in the sky.  This season brings a lot of festivals like Raksha Bandhan, 15th August, Teej, Janmashtami, etc. We can enjoy various types of dishes in the rain.

But sometimes heavy rainfall brings the flood. Flood causes many to lose their lives, houses, and livelihood. On the other hand, if there is no rainfall for a long time, drought can occur. This causes extensive damage to crops. So, the Rainy season is an important season for us.

The gentle breeze soothes Trees and lands are all green and lovely. This is particularly a season of flowers and fruit. Different sorts of vegetables too, grow in plenty. The season has the festivals of the Saraswati Puja and the Holi. Indeed many are found, like the poet, to long for spring-“If winter comes, can spring be far behind ?”.

My Favourite Season Autumn

India is a land of seasons. Six seasons come and pass away here. Autumn, however, appears to me the most charming season of all. It covers roughly two months-September and October. Our earth looks fresh and bright with its coming. The cloudy sky and the rainy weather are over in autumn. A deep blue sky smiles and the sun shines brightly. Nature is adorned with grace and charms. The natural beauty of the season is greatly appealing to me.

Autumn is dear to me for another important reason. This is the season for the greatest Bengali festival-the Durga Puja. This is the festival of joy and happiness. It makes one happy. I enjoy in it the happiness of the season.

My Favourite Season Autumn Essay

During the rainy season, the sky remains overcast with clouds. Rains fall continually. But, with autumn, the clouds are no more. A deep blue sky spreads, like a deep blue sea. The white patches of clouds float like little fairy boats.

The day looks golden with the sun shining. The night has a silvery moon, with its silvery luster. The millions of stars, too, sparkle. Now and then, rain begins to fall thick and fast. But then suddenly the rain stops and, again, a deep blue sky smiles. In autumn, the rivers are full to the brim. The fields are all green and golden with crops. Men and women are busy among them, reaping the harvest. Nature and man seem to unite in one mood of peaceful gladness. Autumn is my favourite season.

Target Exam ---

The land of India experiences Spring, Summer, Monsoon, Autumn, and Winter. Right after the gentle breeze and pleasantness of the spring season, we are faced with the summer season. Lasting from April to June, summer is the hottest season, especially in places closer to the earth’s equator. The two sides of the earth are tilted towards the sun and away from the sun, and thus experience summer and winter accordingly.

Indian summers are scorching, and all parts of the country come face to face with extremely hot days. Another feature of the Indian summer is the blowing of a hot wind called loo. And if it couldn’t get any more unbearable, the days are longer during the summer and the nights shorter!

Essay on Summer Season

To get relief from the heat, people make use of fans, coolers, and air conditioners. Cotton clothes provide comfort if you are going out during the day in the sun.

Sweet things to enjoy

The temperature is at its highest during the summer season. However, people do their best to enjoy themselves despite the heat.

The summer season sees a spike in cold drinks, lemonade, juices, and most of all, ice creams. Various ice-cream sellers can be seen on the roads as well as in shops and malls. There is also a variety of fresh fruit juices that are sold in the summer season. These can prove to be an absolute treat.

Other than ice-creams and juices, the summer season also brings a variety of vegetables and fruits such as cucumber, jackfruits, lichee, watermelon, etc. These can be enjoyed as such or made into juices.

School children tend to enjoy summers a lot more than others because of the summer vacations. They can go to summer camps or vacations.

Ways to tolerate the Summer heat

Going out on a summer day can seem extremely difficult, especially in the afternoons. One can easily be exposed to the sun and get a heat stroke. The hot winds (loo) can also be dangerous if one stays out for too long.

Getting sunburns on one’s skin is also common in summer. One can make the heat of the summer months tolerable by following some of the points given below:

  • Hydration is critical during the summer season. To hydrate oneself means to drink enough water. One should drink water even if they are not thirsty. Drinking fruit juices will also help.
  • One should wear clothes that are suitable to handle hot weather. Our dress should be loosely fitted and light. We should prefer wearing cotton clothes as they help our skin to breathe.
  • We should go out only in the mornings and evenings. Outdoor activity during the day should be limited. Even if we go out, we should try staying in the shady areas.
  • Wearing sunscreen on summer days is a must. Since our skin can get sunburns quickly, we should use a generous amount of sunscreen.
  • Eating light meals will help us stay light in the summer. Large meals require a lot of energy to digest.
  • Carrying a wet towel with us if we go outside can be helpful. We can wipe our face or neck on it.
  • Exercise and other physical activities should be carried out very early in the morning or in the evening. The same goes for shopping, buying groceries, etc.

Summer season essay

Falling after the Holi festival in India, the summer season is followed by rain. In places such as India, there might often be thunderstorms as well during the season.

Although there are similarities in how the season comes upon us, the ways people experience summer and the difficulties it brings can be different for different people. For example, the summer can bring about droughts for people of rural areas, where the land and water resources dry up. There is no water left in the rivers, wells, and canals. People have to walk or travel a considerable distance to get access to water.

There are also people who cannot afford electric fans or air conditioners. Summers can be highly unbearable for them.

Trees also face dehydration which results in loss of leaves. Birds and animals as well go through hardships due to the scarcity of water. If we can, we should try to provide water to stray animals and keep water bowls for birds.

I Hate Summer—and You Should Too

Sunburned boy

W ake me when it’s over—summer, that is. I know, I know, you just love it: the long days, the warm evenings, the trips to the beach, the afternoons at the ballpark when your favorite team is playing and the pennant race is tightening—and the temperature is skyrocketing, and your skin is blistering, and the beer is $6, and the drive home will be in 88° heat, which is fine if you don’t mind running the air conditioner, except that you’re burning through $4–a-gallon gas, because it’s summer-driving season and the giant oil companies didn’t get to be the giant oil companies without knowing the right time of year to hike their prices.

And that’s hardly all of it. Summertime is the season of horribles, from higher crime rates, to increased warfare, to spikes in asthma, to raging wildfires, to swarms of bugs, to a rise in traffic accidents—and even to a bump in divorces, because how could a 100° heat wave, a busted A.C., and the kids out of school not spell domestic bliss?

What’s more, it’s only getting worse. Last summer was the hottest on record, according to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, and the 10 warmest years were all from 2010 to 2022. So with a lousy part of the year becoming lousier still, here, in no particular order, are nine reasons summer is the suckiest season of them all.

Road wrecks

There’s nothing like long days, no school, and lots of teen drivers to make the highways a safe place to be. Not . It’s no coincidence that the Automobile Association of America (AAA) labels the stretch between Memorial Day and Labor Day “the 100 deadliest days.” There are over 11.7 million U.S. drivers between the ages of 15 and 20, and if you know what’s good for you you’ll stay out of their way—especially when they’re out as a group, driving recreationally. “We know that when teens are joyriding as opposed to driving with a specific destination and time in mind, there is a heightened risk,” said Diana Gugliotta, senior manager of public affairs for AAA Northeast, in a statement last year.

Read More : What It's Like To Be Deathly Afraid of Feet

AAA’s numbers back that up. When a teen driver has only other teens in a vehicle, the risk of fatality for the driver and all passengers increases 51%. When at least one passenger is over 35, the overall fatality risk declines 8%. From 2011 to 2020, there were 7,316 deaths in summertime teen-related traffic accidents—nearly half the total of all teen-related traffic accidents for the year.

This means war

Napoleon Bonaparte could tell you a thing or two about what it’s like to pick a fight with Russia in the dead of winter. In 1812, the French army suffered half a million casualties in battles that climaxed in December—a rout that led to Napoleon’s abdication and exile in 1815. Any general worth his steed would prefer to fight in the summer when there’s plenty of light, the roads are clear, and soldiers aren’t bundled up against the cold. As far back as 55 BCE , the Roman army’s “campaigning season” would end when summer wound down and the soldiers would retreat to their winter quarters. It’s probably not a coincidence that World War I began in August 1914, World War II on Sept. 1, 1939, and Nazi Germany’s invasion of Russia in June 1941. More recently , in August 1990, Iraq invaded Kuwait, and in August 1991, the old Soviet Union nearly fell into civil war when communist hardliners tried to oust President Mikhail Gorbachev. America’s 20-year war in Afghanistan typically saw its fiercest fighting in the summer months, and the same is true of the war in Ukraine .

Hot-weather warfare is likely only to get worse. A 2009 paper in PNAS found that rising temperatures exacerbated by climate change could lead to a 54% increase in the risk of civil war in Africa by 2030. A 2011 study in Nature found that warmer weather during El Niño years doubled the risk of civil war in 90 tropical countries and could have accounted for 20% of conflicts around the world over the past half century. Meantime, what’s the season of peace on Earth and goodwill toward men? Wintertime, baby. Wintertime.

Going buggy

Summer advertises itself as the season of birdsong and butterflies. Don’t believe it. It’s the season of pests—particularly ticks, mosquitoes, flies, fleas, bees, and wasps. Ticks, mosquitoes, and fleas in particular can spread diseases that include malaria, yellow fever, Zika, dengue, Lyme, and chikungunya. Bees, wasps, and yellowjackets—with their infernal stings—are similarly creatures of the summer. And you think you know flies? You don’t know flies. There are 110,000 species of them —most more active in hot weather—making up a global population of 17 million flies for every living human. Pssst ! They’ve got us surrounded.

Season of wheeze

Ah, summer, it takes your breath away. Literally. More than 25 million Americans have asthma, and 4.7 million of them are children— according to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). If that means suffering during the temperate months, it’s much worse when the oven that is summer turns the dial up to broil. Heat and humidity constrict and narrow airways , trap ozone, and cause the air to entrain more particulate matter from cars, trucks, and smokestacks. What’s more, stagnant summer air—especially in homes with poor air conditioning or none at all—can exacerbate the presence of mold, dust, and pollen. And then—and stop me if I’ve mentioned this before—climate change is making things more punishing still for people with asthma. A 2023 U.S. Environmental Protection Agency report found that rising temperatures could increase the incidence of childhood asthma by anywhere from 4% to 11%, due partly to worsening pollution and allergies, and the growing problem of wildfire smoke .

Speaking of wildfires…

When it comes to dust, haze, and a mustard-colored sky, Mars has got nothing on Earth—at least during the summer fire season. Last year’s Canadian wildfires , sparked by lightning and fueled by high temperatures and drought, torched more than 71,000 square miles of land in Canada—an area the size of North Dakota—and yellowed out skies in the U.S. from the Midwest to the Northeast to the mid-Atlantic states. But the U.S. is playing with matches too. California’s wildfire season runs from April through October—peaking in the summer—with megadroughts and heat waves driving the flames. Of the state’s 20 largest fires, half occurred from 2017 to 2022. Climate change, of course, plays a regrettable role in all of this.

Crime and punishment

Nothing puts bad guys in a bad mood like hot weather—or so it seems. A 2019 study by the National Bureau of Economic Research found that on days with a maximum temperature above 85°F, all crime increases by 2.2% and violent crime by 5.7%. A 2023 study in PLOS One attributed this to what is known as the Theory of Routine Activities, which postulates that for crime to occur, three factors must be present: a motivated offender, a suitable target, and an absence of guards or surveillance. Of these, it is the second one—the suitable target—that is especially common in summer, according to the 2023 study, with greater numbers of people out on the streets.

As for the first variable, a motivated offender, well, even criminals don’t   want to be outside commiting a crime in a 20°-below polar vortex. During a particularly deep freeze in 2015, Boston saw a 32% drop in burglaries, a 35% drop in larceny, and 46% drop in vehicle theft. Over the same period, New York City set a modern-day record , going 12 days without a homicide.

Summer’s contribution to violent crime in particular may be due at least in part to the common experience of hot weather leading to hot tempers, with even the most even-keeled people more inclined to blow a seam if they can’t cool off. One 2020 study found that people playing competitive video games in a hot room were more aggressive toward their gaming partner than they were when the room was cooler.

Daylight Saving Time

Don’t get me started on Daylight Saving Time. There is just nothing to like about this spring-forward inanity. For starters, it increases energy consumption (when it was supposed to decrease it) due to greater use of air conditioning. The changes in sleep patterns it causes contribute to heart attack , stroke , inflammation , and suicide , not to mention a 6% increase in fatal traffic accidents due to circadian scrambling and overall sleepiness. Small children and teens suffer particularly when the change in the clocks affects sleep cycles.

Finally, the atmospherics are all wrong. Nighttime is nighttime, people; the sun is the party guest that won’t go home if it’s still out at 9 p.m. I say send it packing no later than 8 p.m. and then race back to a nice wintertime sundown at cocktail hour. Cheers.

Trouble on the homefront

If you want to stay married, it might be wise to sleep through summer. That’s the finding of a 2016 study out of the University of Washington showing that August, along with March, are the two peak months for divorce in the U.S. The reason in both cases is more or less the same: couples tend to see winter and summer vacations as untouchable family time and, even in highly stressed marriages, will make it a point to hold the ship together for those treasured stretches. Once the good times are over, however, the marriages might be too.

“People tend to face the holidays with rising expectations, despite what disappointments they might have had in years past,” said sociology professor and the study’s co-author Julie Brines, in a statement at the time the research was released. “They’re very symbolically charged moments in time.”

When those expectations are dashed, a bust-up is likelier to follow. And while both early spring and late summer were implicated equally in that study, other research by Stowe Family Law in the U.K. found that September—the tail end of summer—is the peak divorce month on the other side of the pond, with total-immersion family time throwing financial, interpersonal, and other issues into relief.

It kills your skin

No matter how good it might feel to bake in the sun, your skin really, truly does not want a tan. In a rapidly warming world, it should come as no surprise that the sun is murder on your skin—drying it, aging it, cracking it, and much more importantly, leading to cancer. A 2022 paper in the journal Cureus found the highest rates of skin cancer diagnoses occurring from July to October.

Simple steps like wearing sunscreen , avoiding the sun from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., and wearing protective clothing can all help reduce the risk. Sunshine in the winter, of course, can cause similar damage, but in the summer you're out a whole lot more and wearing a whole lot less. That—like summer as a whole—spells trouble.

Wyoming Big Sagebrush Transplant Survival and Growth Affected by Age, Season of Planting, and Competition

Wyoming big sagebrush (Artemisia tridentata Nutt. ssp. wyomingensis [Beetle & A. Young] S. L. Welsh) has decreased from its historic prevalence across the sagebrush steppe in part because of its interaction with invasive annual grasses and the increased wildfire frequency. Restoration of this species is vital to the ecosystem; however, traditional seeding methods such as broadcast or drill seeding have low success rates. Seedling mortality is associated with harsh weather conditions such as freezing temperatures in the winter and extreme temperature and soil moisture conditions during the summer drought. Transplanting sagebrush has greater success by overcoming the bottleneck of early seedling mortality. We tested how sagebrush transplant survival and size (canopy volume) are affected by age at the time of planting (10 classes, 6‑24 wk), planting season (fall versus spring), and invasive annual grass competition (low/high) with a randomized factorial design over 2 yr. Survival was lower for age classes under 10 or 12 wk (in yr 1 and 2, respectively) but relatively similar from 12 to 24 wk. Fall-planted transplants had lower survival but increased canopy volume compared with spring-planted transplants. Survival and canopy volume decreased with competition with annual grasses. Our results suggest that land managers should consider planting younger transplants than previously thought and controlling invasive annual grasses before planting sagebrush transplants to increase long-term survival and canopy volume.

essay on summer season for class 5

The back-to-back championship dream is over for Denver Nuggets players, fans, and coaches. But for their general manager, going back-to-back was never the biggest priority.

“I just want dudes that we try to develop, and it’s sustainable,” Nuggets GM Calvin Booth told me last August . “If it costs us the chance to win a championship this year, so be it. It’s worth the investment. It’s more about winning three out of six, three out of seven, four out of eight than it is about trying to go back-to-back.”

This quote is from a feature published on opening night about the Nuggets’ hopes of building a dynasty. There was real optimism that Nikola Jokic could power the Nuggets to back-to-back titles, making them the first team to do it since the Warriors did it in 2017 and 2018. Denver was the clear favorite to win it all again, despite losing two key rotation players in Bruce Brown and Jeff Green to free agency. But only rookies and journeyman vets were added to plug in the gaps. With the new collective bargaining agreement presenting massive team-building challenges for teams that are well over the luxury tax, adding young players felt like a reasonable approach. But the Nuggets’ lack of depth was the one hole critics could poke in its case to run it back.

And ultimately, that’s what did the Nuggets in. Denver ran out of gas Sunday, blowing a 20-point lead in the second half at home in Game 7 and losing to the Minnesota Timberwolves. Only one bench player logged more than 10 minutes and the Nuggets had five players under the age of 25 ride the pine the entire game. This was a theme all season, not just in the playoffs. On multiple occasions throughout this campaign, Michael Malone, the fiery head coach of the Nuggets, lamented his team’s lack of steady depth.

“That’s the challenge when you have so many young, unproven players off the bench,” Malone said in late November after an early-season loss to the Rockets. “But we also have games to win, and that delicate balance is a tightrope. But we need to win, and I’m gonna play the guys that are gonna help us get a win.”

Booth and Malone had different approaches to the season that often clashed. Booth was investing in the future, and Malone was thinking entirely about the present. And in the end, nobody won. The Nuggets failed to advance to the conference finals and the rookies didn’t get developmental time they needed. Booth’s plan could still work out in the long run if his draft picks improve. But with the Nuggets already planning their summer vacations, it looks like he whiffed on a valuable chance to win it all again.

Malone had nobody on the bench he believed he could trust, even as Jokic and the Nuggets looked exhausted in the second half of Game 7. The rotation lacked a steady shot-creator in the backcourt besides Jamal Murray, with 34-year-old Reggie Jackson being the only veteran option. Michael Porter Jr. couldn’t find his shot all series, but only journeyman Justin Holiday got chances behind him. Second-year wing Christian Braun was the only youthful contributor. And there was no reliable big man to play behind or alongside Jokic, with DeAndre Jordan as the only veteran on the bench. Minnesota looked longer, quicker, and deeper all series.

“I think they’re built to beat us,” Jokic said after Game 7. “Just look at their roster. They have basically two All-Stars, two probably first-team defensive players, Mike Conley, who is the most underrated player in the NBA. … From the bench, they have a [Sixth Man of the Year]. They have Kyle [Anderson] and [Nickeil Alexander-Walker], who was really good for them. They are one team that can do literally everything. They can be big, or small.”

Jokic’s comments had to sting for Booth and the Nuggets, especially when considering that ex-Nuggets GM Tim Connelly is the one who drafted Jokic, built the roster around him, then left for the Timberwolves to construct a title hopeful shaped to defeat his own creation. Maybe the Nuggets had to lose this season for Booth and Malone to get on the same track long term. But all season, Denver lacked organizational alignment, a worrisome reality for a franchise that just won its first title with a historic player who’s still in his prime and who this season won his third MVP in four years.

Putting the blame solely on Booth would be an error, though. Booth also added Kentavious Caldwell-Pope the prior offseason, and his first rookie class of Braun and Peyton Watson proved to be fruitful. Braun made pivotal plays as a rookie on Denver’s way to a title, which carried over to this season. Watson didn’t play meaningful minutes as a rookie but flashed excellent two-way abilities this season before his lack of a reliable jumper led to his benching against the Timberwolves. The three rookies Booth drafted this year—wing Julian Strawther, guard Jalen Pickett, and forward Hunter Tyson—were all upperclassmen that he hoped would play during the season and then be ready for rotation minutes come the playoffs. Just like Braun last year. But for one reason or another, it didn’t happen.

Here’s what Booth told me over the summer in a quote that didn’t make my opening-night story, after I asked if Braun’s minutes increasing throughout the 2022-23 season was a template for the 2023-24 rookie class: “I think Malone will have to play them. Hunter and Julian, these guys can manufacture points on their own. And I like the balance between Jamal and Jalen, who has been basically Joker Lite wherever he’s been. What happens when Jalen goes out there with Jokic and the ball’s moving around with both of those guys? It’s going to be like San Antonio with Boris Diaw.”

Things didn’t pan out as expected, though. Strawther shot only 29.7 percent from 3 in his 545 regular-season minutes. Pickett appeared in only 122 minutes, sharing the floor with Jokic for just 35 and with Murray for none. Tyson played only 48 minutes, even fewer than Nuggets players on two-way contracts, despite excelling in the G League. Instead, Malone played four of his five starters even more minutes than they did last season (only Murray didn’t, due to his injuries). Malone valued pursuing home-court advantage over managing minutes and distributing playing time to younger players, and it ended up not mattering in the end with Denver losing three home games to Minnesota.

“We played until June last year,” Malone said after Game 7. “We had to play our main guys through Game 82 [this season] to secure the no. 2 seed, whereas last year we were able to rest down the stretch. The run last year, coming back, the amount of minutes our starters had to play, I think emotionally and physically, our guys are gassed.”

So where do the Nuggets go from here to get their dynasty hopes back on track? Maybe most importantly, Booth and Malone need to get on the same page moving forward. The truth is blame and credit are both shared between them. Malone has been in Denver longer than anyone else in the organization, and was critical in the rise of Jokic and in the construction of a system that won a title. But he also should’ve played the kids more to find out whether they could contribute in the playoffs while not running his tired starters into the ground. Booth put the perfect final touches on the team that Connelly built, but knowing Malone’s tendency to favor veterans, and knowing the uncertainty of rookie production, he also could’ve done better than bringing in Jackson, Jordan, and Holiday as the only vets off the bench.

The pressure this summer is undoubtedly on Booth, though. Malone inked a long-term extension in November through the 2026-27 season. Jokic is signed through 2027-28. Meanwhile, Booth’s contract is up after the 2024-25 season, according to a new book from Nuggets reporter Mike Singer . Josh Kroenke and the rest of Nuggets ownership need to consider whether they should reward Booth with an extension despite their leadership’s lack of a shared direction.

No matter who’s in charge, the job of an NBA GM is more complex than ever. The choice to just pay every player and make a bunch of trades isn’t as clear-cut as it once was, because of the severe restrictions the new CBA places on teams over the luxury tax. The first luxury tax apron is $7 million above the tax line, and the second apron is $17.5 million above it. Teams over the salary cap’s first apron are not allowed to:

  • Acquire a player via sign-and-trade;
  • Sign players using the biannual exception;
  • Sign players using more than the taxpayer midlevel exception;
  • Sign players waived during the season if their salary exceeds the non-taxpayer midlevel exception.

Teams over the second apron have even more punitive restrictions:

  • Cash can no longer be used in trades;
  • Trade exceptions from prior years can’t be used in deals;
  • Players can’t be acquired in a sign-and-trade;
  • Outgoing salaries can’t be combined in trades;
  • Cannot sign players using the taxpayer midlevel exception;
  • First-round picks seven years out cannot be traded;
  • If a team remains in the second apron for three out of five seasons, its first-round pick is automatically moved to the end of the round.

Denver’s roster is about to become even more expensive, and will likely exceed the second apron next season. Caldwell-Pope will be an unrestricted free agent in high demand as a knockdown 3-point shooter who also belongs on an All-Defensive team. Any of the eight teams that can create over $20 million in cap space this summer could realistically target him: If the Sixers whiff on Paul George, could KCP be their next target? Why wouldn’t the Spurs want a 3-and-D veteran next to Victor Wembanyama? Isn’t KCP a perfect fit for Orlando’s needs? Up and down the line, Caldwell-Pope can fit anywhere.

One year from now, Murray will be up for a max extension and Aaron Gordon can become an unrestricted free agent who would also have a significant market. It can be assumed that Murray will get a max extension, which means Caldwell-Pope and Gordon would have to combine for roughly $45 million at most for Denver to retain its starting five. That might be too optimistic of a projection for the Nuggets, considering they got priced out of retaining Brown and Green last summer.

More immediately, the Nuggets must worry about retaining KCP. If he’s re-signed to a deal worth around $15 million annually, the Nuggets could get under the second apron by trading away one of Jackson or Zeke Nnaji, and replacing them with a minimum salary. If KCP’s contract is over $20 million annually, then both would have to go (and possibly Vlatko Cancar, depending on other moves). Losing KCP would be a big problem, but it can’t be ruled out with elite 3-and-D players in such high demand.

“This new CBA was appropriate. The second apron was appropriate,” Booth told me before the season. “That’s another reason why we got three rookies.”

And more could be on the way. The Nuggets have the 28th and 56th picks in this year’s draft, which is deep with quality role players . By necessity, Booth needs to invest in young players or else he’ll be handcuffed in detrimental ways. Malone has no choice but to get on board, because the supporting veterans won’t necessarily get any better than they were this year. Booth needs those young players to be hits, though, or he’s going to have to do better at scraping the bottom of the barrel for vets.

“You’re always looking at ways to get better,” Malone said after Game 7. “And that’s what we’ll do.”

The issue is that Booth has so few levers to pull. Even if the Nuggets get under the second apron, they’ll still feel the restrictions of the first apron. They don’t have cap space. They can only trade firsts in 2024 and 2031. Their young guys didn’t improve enough to have much trade value. Front office executives described Booth’s trade negotiations before the deadline as someone who went shopping but left their wallet at home on purpose. It was also a thin trade market: Would moving a rookie for Kelly Olynyk really have made sense? Odds are they couldn’t have outbid the Raptors for him anyway, or made a better offer than the Suns did for Royce O’Neale. Could trading multiple seconds for Andre Drummond really have moved the needle? Perhaps, if it bought Jokic a few minutes to catch his breath. But there wasn’t much out there.

Moving forward, the Nuggets may need to get creative with trades to solve their problems. One card Booth could play is trading Porter Jr., who is about to enter the third year of a five-year, $179.3 million deal. He’s still only 25 years old and appears to be past his injury concerns after missing only 21 games the past two seasons. And he’s certainly one of the league’s best shooters. But he’s expensive, he doesn’t create his own shot off the dribble, and he’s inconsistent on defense. Maybe it’d make sense for the Nuggets to trade Porter for two players, giving them more depth while retaining shooting prowess. Because for the second consecutive year, MPJ’s production fell off a cliff in the playoffs. Last season, Porter averaged 12.3 points on 11.4 shots per game on just 32.7 percent shooting from 3 over the final three rounds. This year, he was even worse in the second round, averaging 10.7 points on 10 shots on 32.5 percent from 3. Porter was also more productive on defense last year. Porter’s health could still be a red flag to some teams, but his youth, shooting prowess, and theoretical upside in an expanded role makes him Denver’s most valuable expendable asset, its clear out to an expensive roster in need of reinforcements.

The problem with even considering trading MPJ is that the Nuggets have already devalued 3-point shooting as is. Most of their draft picks have been inconsistent or low-volume threats from the perimeter at the collegiate level, which has carried over to the NBA in the case of Braun, Watson, and Strawther. And as a team, the Nuggets ranked dead last in 3-pointers attempted this season. Any acquisitions moving forward need to be able to shoot reliably.

“Conventional wisdom says that best players help the role players, but in reality it’s a two-way street,” Booth told me last summer. “The best role players help the best players out. They make the best players better.”

Ultimately, Jokic found himself overwhelmed by Minnesota. Whether it was Karl-Anthony Towns contesting every move, Rudy Gobert looming nearby, or Naz Reid stepping up when he needed to, Jokic faced relentless pressure from a cadre of long arms. And the lack of sharpshooters around him meant he often faced double-teams, swarmed by the Timberwolves with strategic precision.

“I consider the San Antonio Spurs a dynasty, and they never won back-to-back,” Malone said following Game 7. “So losing, the hurt of it, the pain of it, helped win our [first] championship. Can we [now] use this year, too?”

The Nuggets will need to. But there is no guarantee they ever make it back to the Finals. Anthony Edwards is still on the rise. The young Thunder are gaining momentum. The Mavericks and Wolves aren’t going anywhere. And Wembanyama is way ahead of schedule. The Nuggets already caught a glimpse of Wemby’s impact when he led a comeback victory over the Nuggets in his season finale, a loss that dropped Denver to the 2-seed in the West. The game was just a hint at future showdowns in a Western Conference landscape that is only getting tougher.

Once the architect behind the Nuggets, Connelly drew up a new blueprint to take them down. Now, it’s Booth’s turn to adjust the roster, follow through on his original vision, and chase his dream of a Nuggets dynasty.
