Story: A couple in their mid 20s exchanges their phones under a critical circumstance, but little did they know that it would pose a serious threat to their relationship. The little misunderstandings among them lead to serious disputes and them being suspicious of each other. The interference by a few others makes things worse for the two of them. Meanwhile, an explicit video of one of them starts doing the rounds on social media which becomes the final nail in the coffin for their relationship. How are they going to face it?
Review: Director Pradeep Ranganathan, who made heads turn with his debut movie Comali, raised many people's eyebrows when he announced his decision to play the lead in his sophomore film Love Today. However, the biggest challenge for him was to do justice to the short film he made earlier, based on which the movie has been made.
The fun-filled trailer of the rom-com offered a sneak peek into its plot and set the right expectations for the audience, thus elevating expectations surrounding the project. Â Â
Uthaman Pradeep (Pradeep Ranganathan) and Nikita (Ivana), both aged 24 years, decide to get hitched as they feel they are inseparable from each other. The former's mother (Radhika Sarathkumar) and sister (Raveena Ravi) approve their relationship, but the latter's father (Sathyaraj) sets a condition. He asks both Pradeep and Nikita to exchange their respective phones with each other for a day. He promises to approve their relationship if the couple still manages to stay in love with each other the next day.
With no option left, the two of them agree to his condition. After a while, the couple starts checking each other's personal messages, which leads to a dispute between them. But it was just the tip of the iceberg. The unexpected access to an explicit video featuring Nikita sounded death knell for their relationship.
The manner in which the wafer-thin plot made for a short film has been developed into a series of full-fledged entertaining sequences deserves credit. Staying true to the hilarious content in its trailer, the movie is high on fun and emotions right from the word go.
The interesting set of conflict between the lead characters, funny one-liners and spontaneous dialogues between the two are an absolute treat to watch. While Pradeep scores with his expressions and antics, Ivana impresses with her sincere portrayal of varied emotions.
Veterans Sathyaraj and Radhika enhance the narration with their flawless performances. Yogi Babu and Raveena Ravi stand out with their subtle, adequate expressions. Some of the movie's sequences prove to be one of the best examples in recent times to know how aptly cast actors can do wonders to a story.
Though the first half appears a little stretched, the consecutive rip-roaring scenes keep the viewers hooked. The right balance of emotions between various characters and relatable dialogues escalate the latter half despite having chances for the narration to go sloppy.
Yuvan Shankar Raja's background is the backbone of Love Today. The emotions in the film are apt for the musician to give his best output. Dinesh Purushothaman's vibrant visuals and Pradeep E Ragav's slick cuts ably support the storytelling. Â
Verdict: Director-actor Pradeep had mentioned in one of his movie promotions that the film has been made for 2K kids. It looks like he is completely aware of his target audience and has exactly served what they need.

Love Today review: A rollicking new-age entertainer
There was a time in Tamil cinema when our heroes and heroines used to be the perfect-looking, do-gooders who never dared to cross the lines of morality. While men had the occasional liberty to push boundaries, women werenât accorded the same and were expected to be chaste and provide unconditional love. This has changed though, and we now see imperfections and these imperfect stories turn out to be relatable, original, and earnest.
Love Today is one such story of two imperfect youngsters Uthaman Pradeep and Nikhitha who live in a make-believe world assuming themselves to be âthe perfect coupleâ. They call each other all the sweet names in the world. While one personâs ringtone goes âKadhal Neethaanaâ, the other personâs phone rings, âUnmai Kadhal Yaar Endraalâ. Itâs that phase where everything is beautiful and romantic. The two assume they know everything about each other, and it is conveyed in the filmâs very first dialogue when the guy says, âEnakku unna pathi ellam theriyum babyâ as he swoons over her. The girl repeats this a lot too. But all this is until they discover the truth.
After making his debut with a rather quirky Comali, filmmaker Pradeep Ranganathan comes up with another unconventional idea for his sophomore film a couple exchanging their phones for a day and learning dark secrets about each other. This film is an extension of his short film, Appa Lock, which too starred him. The first look and trailer of Love Today made a lot of noise with many worried if it might be a celebration of misogyny or glorification of toxic relationships. However, Pradeep proves them all wrong by focussing on something⊠sincere. The film simply attempts to showcase the flimsiness of contemporary relationships.
Pradeep, the actor, reminds us a lot of Dhanush from his early days, or even SJ Suryah for that matter. Apart from his build and the guy-next-door persona, he has a certain zeal thatâs apt for this film. He finds a perfect foil in Ivana, who is equally chirpy and shows much potential during the emotionally heavy scenes. Though the focus is mostly on Pradeep and Nikhitha, thereâs also another couple, Divya (Raveena) and Yogi (Yogi Babu), at the thick of things. These two couples drive home the filmâs two important points the importance of trust and personal space in relationships. Just like in Comali, here too, Yogi Babu gets a heartwarming character arc.
Pradeep, the filmmaker, deserves appreciation for not resorting to clichés prevalent in this genre. After exchanging the phones, when the guy unravels unknown info about his girlfriend and accuses her of cheating, there is a perfect setting for a women-bashing song to happen at a wineshop, but thankfully, Pradeep steers clear. He understands his target audience and conveys his ideas through simple, effective dialogues. The largely focused narrative meanders a little in the final act when it becomes preachy. However, that works too because of veterans like Radikaa and Sathyaraj. After his caricaturish act in the recently released Prince, Sathyaraj returns to being sharp and convincing.
Performances aside, Love Today is powered by rich production values and a strong technical team. The film is punctuated by several clever creative moments beginning right from the innovative title cards that show the manufacturing of a mobile phone, a key tool in the narrative. Take, for instance, a scene when Pradeep, sitting on a commode, logs into his girlfriendâs Instagram account. What he sees in that trip down the not-so-good rabbit hole hints at the s***storm that is about to hit him.
While it is often a challenge to show social media happenings on screen, the makers of Love Today employ inventive techniques to make it fun and appealing. The edits and flashy transitions, particularly in the first half, are a hoot. A hilarious stretch where Radikaa goes on a rant about her sonâs phone usage is brilliantly designed to evoke laughs. Yuvan Shankar Rajaâs funky music aids in enhancing these fun moments. The idea of incorporating a remixed version of âKuttrale Aruviyile Kulichadhu Pol Irukkudhaâ in the background when things go south is an ingenious move. One can sense the kind of fun Yuvan had while working on the film, and itâs easily one of his better works in recent times. Pradeep also pays homage to his music icon in quite a few scenes, which include a portrait of Yuvan in his room.
During the filmâs announcement, many thought that the makers were trying to cash in on Vijayâs popularity by borrowing the title of his 1997 hit, but the title makes complete sense once you watch the film. It is a film about todayâs love, and Pradeep does a great job of ensuring that itâs a story for everyone.

Love Today Review - A fun take on a relevant topic that is pleasantly surprising!

Love Today – A fun take on a relevant topic that is pleasantly surprising!
Bharath Vijayakumar
The first half of Love Today is what you precisely saw in the trailer (and Pradeep’s short film App(a) Lock). It has a lot of humour packed in and the film moves at a breakneck speed. A couple in love are in for a rude shock when both land an opportunity to peek into their partner’s private space. Or to put it more appropriately, they get a chance to get a view of their partner’s digital life. And this view gives a completely different picture. So how do you evaluate a person? What they are in real life? Or how they behave when they get a mask to let out their feelings without the fear of being judged? The idea of using the title of a yesteryear Vijay film isn’t just a ploy to garner attention. Love Today is as apt a title you can get for this film.
The best thing about Love Today is how it showcases real issues and more importantly tries to do so from the POV of both the genders. How far it succeeds or how effective it is with respect to treating either side equally could be up for a debate but the important thing here is that makes an effort (or at least comes across) to see both sides of the picture. Both the lead characters aren’t entirely honest, and the film surprisingly doesn’t play to the gallery by putting down the girl. Yes, there are a lot of whistles when the hero calls the girl names and exposes her lies. But the character played by Ivana is never put down in the film. The second half actually exposes the hypocrisy of the hero. This half has quite a lot of emotional scenes and these are several notches better from what you got in Comali. The melodrama is minimal, and the emotions are far more organic.
For a film that does a lot of things right, it is a little disappointing that it doesn’t really make it a point to register that some of the things that the hero and his friends do are shameful. To its credit, the film doesn’t whitewash their deeds. It also shames them for what they do in the name of anonymity. But if you look at it a certain way, they feel shameful only when they realize that what they do is affecting one amongst them. The film doesn’t make it explicit if they realized that commenting on an actress picture inappropriately isn’t any less wrong. This becomes glaring when they bring someone from outside for having committed a shameful crime. What the hero and his friends have been doing all this while has also probably affected a lot of people out there.
Bottomline:
Love Today is a lot of fun. The film also pleasantly surprises on how it tackles a very relevant topic of today. Few things could be up for debate but for making a lighthearted film without trivializing the menace of perversion using anonymity, this one is a winner!

Love Today Review: Fun-filled Youthful Entertainer
Movie: Love Today Rating: 3/5 Banner: AGS, SVC Cast: Pradeep Ranganathan, Ivana, Sathyaraj, Yogi Babu, Radhika Sarathkumar, Raveena and others Music: Praveen Lakkaraju, Ram Miriyala Director of Photography: Dinesh Purushothaman Editor: Pradeep E Ragav Art Director: MKT Producers: Kalapathi S Aghoram, Ganesh, Suresh Written and directed by: Pradeep Ranganathan Release Date: Nov 25, 2022
"Love Today," a Tamil film, was a smash hit in Tamilnadu. Producer Dil Raju has released the film in Telugu after being impressed by its success.
Let us examine its advantages and disadvantages.
Story: Pradeep (Pradeep Ranganathan) and Nikitha (Ivana), both IT employees, are deeply in love. Pradeep's sister Divya (Raveena) recently got engaged to a dentist (Yogi Babu), and wedding plans are in the works. Pradeep agrees to meet with Nikitha's father to ask for her hand after his sister's wedding is over.
However, Nikitha's father Venu Sastry (Sathyaraj) detects their love and invites Pradeep to their home. Sastry agrees to their marriage if they agree to his condition of exchanging mobile phones for one day. They agree to it half-heartedly and exchange their phones.
Will they check each other's phones? What difficulties would they face as a result of this unusual condition?
Artistes’ Performances: Pradeep Ranganathan not only wrote and directed the film, but also starred as the protagonist. He resembles the boy next door. His performance is relatable. His conversations, frustrations, and emotional outbursts are completely natural.
Ivana, the female lead, is attractive and has good acting skills. She does a good job in her role. Yogi Babu, who also plays an important role, adds dignity to the proceedings. He demonstrates the maturity required for the role.
Raveena as his wife-to-be is excellent. Radhika Sarath Kumar and Sathya Raj are fantastic.
Technical Excellence: The cinematography, editing, and music of the film reflect its trendy setting. Editing is crazy and creative.
Yuvan Shankar Raja's music is an additional asset, particularly his background score, which has elevated the proceedings. The Telugu dialogues are excellent.
Highlights: The first half Fun dialogues Narration Pradeep Ranganathan
Drawback: Certain portions in second half Predictable ending
Analysis "Love Today," as the title suggests, is about two modern-day lovers. The two lovers use their phones for everything from chatting to making Insta Reels. Mobile phones are more like a personal diary where all their secrets are kept for them. Naturally, the problems begin when they are forced to exchange their phones for a day. Tamil director Pradeep Ranganathan had a brilliant idea involving mobile phones and social media apps.
You might be wondering what problems this phone exchange would cause. It does. The heroine goes on a night ride with her ex without informing her current lover. The hero messages women on Instagram and speaks nicely to telemarketing women. These are just a few of the many secrets revealed by their phones.
The film is full of hilarious scenes that anyone can relate to today. First, the director reveals that the heroine is still in contact with her ex-boyfriend, and one of her friends proposed to her via mobile chatting. The director then sheds light on the hero's dirty secrets in the second half. Both of these threads come together at one point. There are numerous plot twists and turns that both entertain and engage us.
The plot of the film is similar to that of most romantic dramas, but with a unique twist.
The use of memes, viral songs, and jokes is brilliant. One of the dialogues also includes a reference to the recent "Jaru Mithaya" song.
Another thread involves Yogi Babu and Raveena, which adds another dimension to the story.
On the downside, the second half of the film is not as amusing as the first. Revi's character and his thread are not adequately explained. Other issues arise in the second half as well.
All of this, however, has no effect on the film's flow and it never stops providing entertainment.
On the whole, “Love Today” depicts the lifestyle of today’s youth and their dating culture through a lot of fun-filled moments. The film makes a time pass watch and provides paisa vasool entertainment.
Bottom line: Trendy Love Story

Love Today Tamil Movie
Being a 90s kid, I could still recollect a young Vijay in a 1997 interview, asking people to watch "Love Today", as it has a message to all the "roadside Romeos"!! Cut to 2022, after 25 years, we have a movie with the same name about a roadside Romeo, but with the quintessential modern gadget in his and her hands - the mobile phone! As they say, mobile phones have become an extension of our organs - as funny as it sounds, it is so true. The shield that one enjoys in the digital space is as good as the person in question. Call it societal malice or way of life, this is something that filmmakers have started pondering into in the last few years!
"Love Today" directed by Pradeep Ranganathan has such a modern technological challenge as its central conflict. A remake of a short film, the movie is about the lives of Uthaman Pradeep (Pradeep Ranganathan) and Nikitha (Evana) who are crazily in love with each other. That was until both exchanged their respective mobile phones with each other, thanks to Nikitha's father, Venu Shastri (Sathyaraj). Thereafter conflicts surround their relationship with accusations from both sides questioning each other's 'honesty'. Did they unite at the end - yes, you guessed it right.
The movie talks about a pertinent aspect of technology and how it can influence the most intimate of relationships. These are modern societal challenges and conflicts that can be viewed through a variety of glasses. Director Pradeep being a light-hearted filmmaker has chosen to take the safe path of a youthful romantic comedy that appeals to the gen Z.
Pradeep, who also makes a debut as an actor, has chosen the right role to introduce himself to the audience. It is a role that is flawed, to say the least. However, we've seen such characteristics in many heroes whom Selvaraghavan has introduced in the past. The presentation was decent and the lines were a bag of hits and misses. Evana, who earlier appeared as an abused minor in Bala's 'Naachiyaar' has now landed a much more bubbly role. She has the stereotypical 'heroine' role, but had some meat!
Stereotypes do not end up there. A 'Brahminical' color has been given to a disciplinarian and 'boomer' father. Friends who are portrayed more as caricatures. Mother, who is a disciplinarian, but is tolerant enough to acknowledge even if her son's moral scale tilts. Past relationships and their influence on the current ones. Stalking women over the internet. And the list goes on.
Certain characters and plot points were interesting. Raveena Ravi and Yogi Babu's relationship as the potential bride and groom was sweetly conceived. It gives a very thoughtful view of a woman's perspective on how she chooses her better half. Though body shaming is at its core, transforming the same as an emotional subplot was a substantial twist to the tale.
Few of the numbers from Yuvan were hummable. However, it is way far from Yuvan's usual standards. Still waiting for him to make a solid comeback! Other technicalities like cinematography, editing, and sound design were par for the course. Overall, the movie that is supposed to entertain its target audience, the youth who are in their 20s, does the job. However, others who are beyond that age or mindset leave the theatres with mixed feelings. It's not the stale climax or the least engaging last 30 minutes that is worrisome, it is about the values that the youth embark on in this neo-modern technologically driven digital world. Let's hope for a better world!

Movie Review: Love Today
Article by Cinephile Published by GulteDesk --> Published on: 8:40 am, 26 November 2022
Director : Pradeep Ranganathan Producers : Kalpathi S. Aghoram, Kalpathi S. Ganesh Cast : Pradeep Ranganathan, Ivana, Raveena Ravi, Sathyaraj Music : Yuvan Shankar Raja Banner : AGS Entertainment Language : Tamil
Pradeep Ranganathan made an impressive debut with the 2019 comedy-drama Comali, starring Jayam Ravi and Kajal Aggarwal in the lead roles. He chose a unique plotline once again and came up with his second outing, Love Today. Apart from directing, he also played the lead hero in it. The film features Ivana as the female lead. Radhika Sarathkumar and Satyaraj played pivotal roles in it. Let’s see how it turned out to be.
Love Today explores the love story of two millennial kids, Uthaman (Pradeep) and Nikita (Ivana). Just like the most present-day couple, this pair fall in love and decide to get married without really ‘knowing’ each other. That’s when Nikita’s father (Satyaraj) comes up with a condition for their marriage. He asks Uthaman and Nikita to exchange their phone for a day. He says that he will agree to this marriage only if they manage to love each other after exchanging their phones. What happens when the couple exchanges their mobile phones forms the main crux of the film.
This is a unique idea that will appeal to the youngsters of this generation. Pradeep not only gets his idea right but also explores the entire screenplay by targeting the millennials. Even the film’s making style reminds you of TikTok videos and Instagram reels. The youngsters can relate to every scene, whether it is the sequence where the heroine goes on a night ride with her ex without her lover’s (hero) knowledge or the hero messaging other women on Instagram.
Pradeep Ranganathan is not only good as a writer and a director but he also scores brownie points with his acting too. His guy-next-door looks work for him big time. Ivana also impresses as the female lead. The lead pair’s chemistry is one of the major highlights of this romantic comedy. Satyaraj gives a settled performance. Radhika is good too and most of the time, she has been used to preach morals and values. Yogi Babu impresses with a heart-warming character. Raveena also shines as Yogi Babu’s wife.
Love Today’s writing follows the ‘template’ of every romantic drama. But Pradeep brings freshness through his screenplay and the usage of music and editing. Music by Yuvan Shankar Raja works big time. It is one of the major assets of this film. The production values are great. The technical brilliance of the film can be seen in many scenes, be it the title cards or funky transitions.
If a director knows the sensibilities of his target audience, he can come up with a winner of a subject. Pradeep has done exactly that. Love Today will be relatable to all youngsters out there and it will engage them right from the beginning to the end. Towards the end, the film falls into the typical ‘message-conveying’ zone but that doesn’t take away the fun at all.
On the whole, Love Today showcases how a hormone-charged couple turns into an emotional couple. It is the ultimate fun ride, especially for the youth. You can watch it without any inhibitions.
Unique storyline
Thumbs Down:
A few moments in the second half
Predictable and stereotypical climax
Bottom-Line : Ultimate Fun Ride For The Youth

A wildly entertaining quirky romcom, loaded with hilarious laugh out loud situational-observational humor n decent emotions. Pradeep takes his wacky short film idea and stretches it out into an crowd pleasing feature narrative with smart creative edit choices, exploring the dynamics of contemporary love in the âdark secretâ social media era, mostly from an even handed perspective. Though it treads at a surface level with few flat n exaggerated scenes, it manages to stack up one relatable event after the other in a bizarre yet refreshingly enjoyable manner and wraps things up with an effective finale.
Another major impressive element were the good setups and satisfactory payoffs during the third act. Yogi Babu strikes at a perfect emotional high point.âŠ

Sorry but this movie gave me more trust issues and insecurities despite the climax. Adivaangunadhu naaanuuuuuuu.
Being said that, i liked the screenplay, creativity, editing and music. The metaphor of mango tree, Radhikaâs final act and Yogi babuâs storyline was a great touch. Also Yuvan was amazing  â„ïž

disliked: - if they had literally sat down and had a mature conversation they couldâve cleared up a lot of the issues they found with each other đ - what is that girlâs phone case- genuinely the ugliest thing ive ever seen

Take out the quirky editing and you are left with a cautionary tale of incels youths trying to normalise cyberbullying and Bois r Bois bro messaging. You can really see that based on how the difference between 'thappu' justification for both genders are being portrayed. If juvenile comedy and ott expression of being incel is taken as peak humour in Tamil cinema, I really don't know what to say.

A good and laughable feature length meme. The humour works big time because it is in perfect sync with our pop culture. Maybe, thatâs why it feels like you are watching a YouTube channel thatâs hilarious, but still YouTube. Sk na, learn from Pradeep.

NGL, I went in expecting this movie to be bad, but holy shit... This was bloody amazing.
Yes, it's got it's flaws. It's predictable, a few jokes were corny, it's a little bit misogynistic and tries to justify it all towards the end, but we are talking about an audience that has lapped up stuff like SMS and OKOK, and Love Today is 1% of what M Rajesh films are, in terms of being problematic.
Despite all this, as an overall film, it works and that's because Pradeep is a clever writer, a terrific director and an amazing actor. Where he lets down his guard on one aspect, he lets one of his other roles shine, and I think that'sâŠ

so now Tamil cinema is normalising cyber sexual harassment and being a sex offender in general. embarassing how this is such a big hit. never seen a more incel movie. everything in this movie is what an incel's wet dreams and nightmares are like. the worst thing an incel can imagine on his girlfriend's phone is chats of her flirting with her ex which scares him to think she's not virgin bc ofc he would never get back with a girl who's not virgin. only pure virgin girls for marriage. the film even goes out of it's way to prove she's never had sex and that the leaked sex tape is actually a deepfake before they reconcile. what if sheâŠ

âLove Todayâ has solid directing overall and a hilarious first hour. Pradeep Ranganathan enhances already well-written scenes with great staging and uses editing, cinematography and music to make them feel fresh. When so much effort is put into the first hour, even little things like Uthaman Pradeep having an Ilaiyaraaja song as ringtone and Nikitha having an AR Rahman song as ringtone goes unnoticed. The title animation too was wonderful in setting up the mood for the film. Yuvanâs score immensely lifts the scenes and gives the film vibes similar to âSiva Manasula Sakthiâ.Â
But, once the main plot kicks in, the film loses focus due to the poor, clichĂ©d writing. The scenes becomes flavorless. Emotions that felt natural inâŠ

Stream It Or Skip It: âThe Greatest Hitsâ on Hulu, a High-Concept Sci-fi Romance Starring Lucy Boynton as a Very Sad Time Traveler
âthe greatest hitsâ ending explained: what is the missing song, when will ‘the greatest hits’ movie be on hulu how to stream the lucy boynton movie, 5 movies like ‘the tearsmith’ if you’re looking for more coming-of-age romances with mildly gothic flavor.
The new Netflix romance Love, Divided is a charming remake of the French romantic comedy Blind Date , set in Spain this time around. When a young pianist moves into a new apartment, she learns that her cranky neighbor is trying to drive her out because he can only work in complete silence. Eventually, they compromise on the noise, and soon after, they form a romantic relationship, without ever setting eyes on each other.
LOVE, DIVIDED : STREAM IT OR SKIP IT?
Opening Shot: A grand piano is hoisted by crane in front of an apartment building. A woman on the ground watches anxiously.
The Gist : Valentina (played by Spanish singer Aitana) is our anxious piano player, and she’s moving into a new apartment after a breakup with her ex. Her cousin, Carmen, has arranged a new life for her: a new apartment and new job at a coffee shop, in an effort to get Valentina to move on with her life, but Valentina is preoccupied with a piano audition she has in three weeks that she’s determined to practice for day and night.
David (Fernando Guallar) is Valentina’s new next door neighbor, Their apartments are barely soundproof, and David, an agoraphobic game designer, is something of a mad genius; he’s surrounded by gadgets and tools and requires complete silence to work.
David has successfully chased away every other tenant that has tried to move into the apartment next door by rigging up noisy contraptions that make spooky noises at all hours. Valentina and David speak through the wall and she learns he wants her out so that he can do his work in peace, but she holds firm that she’s not budging, so they engage in a noise-off to try and annoy one another through the wall: he wakes her up with loud banging, she plays piano at all hours. After a particularly contentious day where David critiques Valentina’s piano playing, he later offers an apology and the two start to talk from their respective sides of the wall and get to know one another.
Not only do the two become friendly, but they form a real relationship despite never seeing each other in the flesh, they even rearrange their apartments so their beds share the wall and they can sleep near one another. Valentina remains anxious about her piano audition, especially because her ex, a controlling older man who is also a conductor, has recommended her for it. He’s the one who pushed her to play professional piano, despite her love of singing, so really, she’s pushing herself as a pianist to satisfy him and make him look good. David recognizes that Valentina’s real love is singing and composing, and he encourages her to pursue those instead, but she doesn’t believe in herself enough, not yet anyway.
Eventually, the day of the audition comes and Valentina has to prove herself. She doesn’t exactly bomb it, but at David’s suggestion, instead of playing Beethoven, she plays an original number she wrote. Of course she gets kicked out of the audition and her ex is furious, but guess what? By this point, Valentina is a new woman, ready to come face to face with her future… and with David, who she’s finally ready to see in. the flesh.
What Shows Will It Remind You Of? Love, Divided combines a quirky, Amélie -like fantasy-meets-reality element to all of its settings (not to mention the fact that Valentina possesses a similar childlike quality to Amélie), mixed with a dash of Love Is Blind .
Our Take: Despite the fact that Love, Divided is a light, airy, implausible love story, it does something that many films like it don’t do, which is give its characters motivation and backstory. Valentina, meek and timid, has spent her life being told what to do, overshadowed and put in her place by a domineering ex. So, too, does David, whose commitment-phobia is rooted in a tragic loss. All of the “whys” come out eventually, which is a crucial component of creating characters instead of caricatures. Credit for that also must be given to the leads, Aitana and Fernando Guallar, who are subtle but convincing as they guide their characters toward love. And the rest of the supporting cast provides the right balance, as they all incredulously rib their two friends for creating a relationship with someone from behind a wall.
The film can’t really be categorized as a rom-com, as it’s fairly light on laughs, but it hits the same beats that a great romantic comedy should (despite having a big music number to showcase Aitana’s talent, it’s not really a musical, either), so I suppose it would be best categorized as a feel-good romance, basically a Spanish-language Hallmark movie. And that’s not meant in a negative way, the film is charming in all the best ways, while managing to avoid being saccharine or generic. While it could have used another pass to make it a little funnier or to give David’s character some resolution of his own (his mad-scientist schtick fades away and the game he’s been designing takes a backseat to his love life), the film slowly and surely builds toward a well-earned happy ending.
Sex and Skin: There’s one scene of Carmen and her date kissing, with implied sex after.
Parting Shot: Valentina and David break down the wall between their apartments and she climbs through the opening and into his arms. As they see one another for the first time, he says, “Hello,” and they fall into a kiss.
Performance Worth Watching: Carmen (Natalia Rodriguez), and Nacho, played by Paco Tous, give some good Carrie Fisher-Bruno Kirby vibes as Valentina and David’s respective sidekicks who also manage to have some sparks fly between them.
Memorable Dialogue: “This is the best dinner I ever had without being in the same room,” David’s friend Nacho says, excusing himself from a meal where he and David have sat on one side of a wall, opposite Valentina and Carmen on the other side.
Our Call: STREAM IT! Love, Divided is a hidden gem, a romantic fantasy that’s broad and appealing, not too heavy on the farce or mistaken identities, and hits just the right notes.

Love, set, match: Zendaya serves it up in Guadagnino's erotic tennis drama 'Challengers'
Some would say the era of movie stars is over. The criteria for a movie star are much different than the criteria for a good actor. Not only do you have to be able to act, but you also have to be charming, engaging and have star power. Your off-screen life has to be just as interesting as your on-screen performances.
The late '90s and early aughts were the last peak for movie stars. Tom Cruise, Leonardo DiCaprio, Julia Roberts â all stars who could get audiences to the theater simply because they were in the movie, and also get people to do a double take at the cover of tabloid magazines at the grocery store checkout line.
Zendaya is a true starÂ
Maybe itâs because with social media we have so much more access to celebrities, or itâs because the monoculture is not as powerful as it was. But someone who is effortlessly entrancing, as beautiful as they are talented and hypnotizingly glamorous is significantly harder to come by.
Zendaya is here to change things.
In director Luca Guadagnino's new film âChallengers,â Zendaya cements her stardom, moving away from child actress and Spider-Man's plus one. Along for the ride and leveling up in their own right are Josh OâConnor and Mike Faist. âChallengersâ is an electrifying romantic sports drama with star-making performances.
What happens in 'Challengers'
In order to get his confidence back, falling tennis superstar Art Donaldson (Faist) is entered into a Challenge Tour match against small-time players by his wife, coach and former tennis prodigy Tashi (Zendaya).
Her plan is turned on its head when Art makes it to the final round only to face off against Artâs former best friend and Tashiâs ex-boyfriend: the cocky Patrick Zweig (OâConnor).
Flashing back 12 years, Art and Patrick are a dominating young doubles tennis team. Having grown up together in boarding school, the boys are thick as thieves. At this tournament, they watch wunderkind Tashi Duncan. While others are focused on the ball, the two boys are focused on Tashi. Later, the three meet up and do what kids about to go to college do: hang out in a hotel room, share a beer and kiss. The next day, Art and Patrick are expected to play each other, but Tashi presents a new prize. Whoever wins the match, wins her number.
Tashi and Art end up at Stanford University together playing college tennis, while Patrick goes pro right out of high school. While in town visiting his girlfriend and his best friend, Patrick gets into a fight with both of them and doesnât show up to Tashiâs big match. Itâs here that in a chase for a ball, she missteps and injures her knee. Art rushes to her side as it sinks in that this is the end for Tashi Duncan, tennis sensation.
Flashing between the Challenger tournament in real time and critical times in their history together, the threesome works out professional and sexual tensions on and off the court.
'Challengers' is the rare sexy modern-day drama
âChallengersâ is a rare modern-day sexy adult drama. Today, films are often played to reach the broadest possible audience, and in doing so turn down the eroticism, or are cornered into becoming a genre film, like a war movie or a science-fiction movie.
Seldom these days is a movie just about adults in adult circumstances. Guadagnino, the Italian director who became more well-known to American audiences with his 2017 hit â Call Me by Your Name ,â has always specialized in the intimate connection between people.
Combining his eye for expressive filmmaking, a mature performance from the three main stars and a droning pop score from Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross, âChallengersâ is a seductive feast for the senses.

Teen dies of stab wounds after fight inside Wasilla movie theater, police say
A teenager died from wounds sustained during a fight at a Wasilla movie theater Friday night, according to the Wasilla Police Department.
Around 6:45 p.m. Friday, officers responded to reports of a stabbing at The Valley Cinema in Wasilla, police said in an emailed statement Saturday.
Police and Alaska State Troopers who arrived at the scene found that multiple teens were involved in a fight inside one of the facilityâs theaters and one teenager was stabbed, police said.
The injured teen was taken to Mat-Su Regional Medical Center, then was flown to Providence Alaska Medical Center in Anchorage and later died from their wounds, police said.
A teen who police considered to be a suspect remained at the scene and cooperated with officers, the department said.
Police said the incident was being investigated as a homicide, and that neither the suspect nor victim would be identified because both are juveniles. It wasnât immediately clear from the police departmentâs statement Saturday whether anyone had been charged in connection to the stabbing.
Wasilla police asked anyone who witnessed the fight to contact Detective Sgt. Mike Bonadurer at 907-352-5462, and to reference Case 24-0829.
