Today’s education landscape needs leaders like you — dynamic educators and innovators committed to making sustainable and scalable change for all students by building on your professional experience in PreK–12 classrooms and districts; on college and university campuses; or in philanthropies, nonprofits, policy organizations, and ed-tech initiatives.

That’s why the Harvard Graduate School of Education launched an online Master's in Education Leadership, a two-year, part-time Ed.M. program with Higher Education and PreK-12 pathways specifically designed for working education professionals who bring at least seven years of relevant or transferrable work experience. The program will strengthen the invaluable skills you’ve already developed and give you the tools to propel yourself to new leadership opportunities and to even greater impact.

“Skilled leadership is essential to creating opportunity and overcoming the longstanding inequities that create barriers to success. At HGSE, we are committed to helping you meet today’s complex challenges by becoming the type of leader education needs.” Bridget Long Dean and Saris Professor of Education and Economics Harvard Graduate School of Education

A New Option for Experienced Educators

The online Master's in Education Leadership from HGSE consists of a diverse cohort of professionals like you — leaders who are advancing in their careers, and who bring important perspectives grounded in real-world challenges. Our program is conducted almost exclusively online — except for one short on-campus experience, where you'll meet your cohort in person and build community prior to the start of the first fall semester.

The program offers a distinctive Harvard experience — including deep engagement and interaction with Harvard faculty and talented peers, as well as a lifelong professional network — within an intentionally designed curriculum and robust opportunities for mentorship and coaching. The program is career-embedded — so you can immediately apply what you are learning, in real time, to the work you are doing on the ground.

Two Pathways: Higher Education and PreK–12

In the online Master’s in Education Leadership, you will choose between two Professional Pathways — Higher Education or PreK–12 — that align with the area of practice or the student community in which your work will make an impact. Students interested in advancing into senior leadership roles in colleges and universities, or in organizations that impact higher education, should study in the Higher Education Pathway . Students who want to do change-making work within the education ecosystem on behalf of students from early childhood to secondary education levels should select the PreK–12 Pathway .

Our prescribed curriculum is intentionally designed to meet your professional needs. It is anchored in both foundational knowledge and core competencies in education leadership related to the U.S. education system. You will also complete pathway-specific courses to advance your leadership in higher education or preK–12 education, as well as the Foundations courses. You will also have the opportunity to select courses from a small subset of electives. A minimum of 42 credits are required to graduate with an Ed.M. degree from HGSE.

The main elements of the curriculum are:

Foundations Courses

Throughout the two-year program, you will participate in Foundations courses in four areas: How People Learn, Leading Change, Evidence, and Equity and Opportunity. In these courses, you’ll build core skills central to the profession of education.

  • The online Ed.M. program commences with How People Learn, which runs online June–July and requires a time commitment of 10–15 hours per week.
  • You’ll participate in Equity and Opportunity, Evidence, and Leading Change throughout the two-year program.

Professional Pathways

All students will choose between the Higher Education and PreK–12 Pathways. Throughout the program, you will take both cross-pathway courses and pathway-specific courses. Cross-pathway courses will allow you to develop leadership skills that are important across sectors, as well as have discussions about how higher education and preK–12 can work more effectively together. Cross-pathway courses include:

  • Real Talk: The Art and Practice of Communications
  • Strategic Finance for Nonprofit Leaders

Pathway-specific courses are directed to the knowledge and skills important for leadership in the Pathway professional setting.

Elective Coursework

Students will have the opportunity to choose from a curated list of electives during the optional January terms, and during the fall and spring of their second year. Sample elective courses:

  • Law and Higher Education
  • Leading a School through Challenge and Crisis
  • Race, Equity, and Leadership
  • Teaching Exceptional Learners in Inclusive Classrooms
  • Why Can’t Higher Education Change?
  • Writing Workshop

Note: Though some courses may include comparative and international examples, applicants should expect a focus on leadership within U.S. domestic educational institutions and systems.

Leadership Core Competencies

To help you manage, lead, and implement change in complex organizations, our curriculum explores the core leadership competencies that you'll need to elevate your skills, knowledge, and expertise, wherever you are in your career. Throughout your coursework, you will strengthen your ability to:

  • Lead change and think strategically
  • Foster productive organizational conditions
  • Navigate politics and practice political inclusion
  • Communicate effectively
  • Cultivate self-development and team professional development skills

Higher Education Pathway

All students will choose between the Higher Education and PreK–12 Pathways. The Higher Education Pathway prepares you to be a dynamic leader in a diverse range of postsecondary education contexts. It is designed to increase your knowledge of the practices, policies, processes, challenges, and opportunities in American postsecondary education. You will enhance your repertoire of strategies and management skills for tackling critical issues and introducing change — while preparing you to advance in your current career or move into other important leadership roles in higher education.

Sample courses for the Higher Education Pathway:

  • Creating the Future of American Postsecondary Education
  • Higher Education Leadership & Governance
  • Student Affairs in Higher Education: Theory-Driven Practices to Help Students Thrive

You will also have the opportunity to engage with accomplished leaders through HGSE’s unique President-in-Residence program.

Students interested in the Higher Education Pathway currently hold administrative and mid-level leadership roles:

  • Colleges and universities, including in academic affairs, student affairs, admissions and enrollment management, advancement, and institutional research
  • Nonprofit education organizations
  • State and federal government agencies
  • Policy organizations focused on higher education

PreK–12 Pathway

All students will choose between the Higher Education and PreK–12 Pathways. The PreK–12 Pathway equips you to advance your leadership across the preK–12 landscape, including in such positions as teacher leader, principal, afterschool director, education agency representative, education nonprofit/philanthropic leader, or education entrepreneur.

Sample courses for the PreK–12 Pathway:

  • Strategic Leadership in the PreK–12 Ecosystem
  • Creating Conditions for Effective School, Family, and Community Partnerships
  • Leading Learning

Students interested in the PreK-12 Pathway currently hold administrative and mid-level leadership roles in:

  • Nonprofit education organizations (I.e., foundations, advocacy organizations, technical assistant organizations).
  • Policy organizations focused on preK–12 education

Projected Time Commitment

Courses combine synchronous meetings and asynchronous work and assignments. Live or synchronous aspects of required courses will occur on weekdays (Monday–Friday) between 6 and 9 p.m. ET . Some elective courses, outside the required curriculum, may be offered at alternative times. On average, this degree requires 12 to 18 hours of work per week, though the weekly commitment will vary by term, courses taken, and students' own work styles. Students can expect to spend approximately five to seven hours per week in synchronous online class sessions with faculty members and classmates. The remaining hours will be spent working independently on asynchronous class preparation, in self-scheduled small-group work with other students or working on assignments.

Weekly Time Estimate

To complete the online Ed.M. in Education Leadership, students must complete 42 total credit hours of coursework over the two-year program. While the weekly time commitment varies, the graphic below provides a snapshot of the estimated weekly time commitment students may experience during the fall and spring semesters, when they will typically take 8 credits, the equivalent of two courses .

Young man studying

  • Credits measure the student workload required for the successful completion of a module or qualification.
  • One credit represents about 10 hours of study over the duration of the course.
  • You are awarded credits after you have successfully completed a module.
  • For example, if you study a 60-credit module and successfully pass it, you will be awarded 60 credits.
  • Masters degree in Education

This flexible masters degree is suitable for education professionals who wish to acquire qualities and transferable skills that are highly prized by employers. There are three specialist routes to choose between – learning and teaching, leadership and management or inclusive practice. You can change your specialism after Stage 1, so you can study two specialisms within one qualification. The final dissertation module gives you the option of conducting a small-scale inquiry on a topic of your choice, or completing an extended literature review and research proposal relevant to your educational professional interests and practice.

  • A rich choice of specialisms to suit a range of interests.
  • Engage with issues, concepts and debates that enrich your knowledge and improve your professional practice.
  • Choose between a small-scale inquiry or an extended literature review and research proposal to fit your personal and professional circumstances.
  • Develop and consolidate advanced scholarship and independent learning in the context of your own practice.

How to register

Select the module you will study first, read the full description, and follow the instructions to register.

To gain this qualification, you need 180 credits as follows:

You’ll choose one of the following specialisms and study one 60-credit module at each stage:

  • inclusive practice
  • leadership and management
  • learning and teaching.

This introduces some of the big ideas in education and their specialist domain(s). You'll engage with concepts, current debates and issues in the area of education relevant to your chosen route.

This stage broadens your knowledge and understanding of your chosen aspects of education.  You can change specialisms after Stage 1 to give you the opportunity to study across two specialisms. Your choice at Stage 2 will commit you to that specialism as your Stage 3 dissertation topic.

You are required to submit a dissertation in a chosen area that is based in your practice and contributes to organisational development and/or effectiveness. This will be a small-scale inquiry on a topic of your choice situated within your own educational practice or setting. If this is not possible in your setting, you can complete an extended literature review and research proposal relevant to your own educational professional interests and practice.

Inclusive practice

180 credits from:

Leadership and management

Learning and teaching, applied linguistics (continuing students only).

This specialism is only available if you have successfully completed Stage 1 or have credit awarded from study elsewhere. Stages 2 and 3 must be completed by 31 December 2026. A new MA in Linguistics (F97)   will be available from October 2024.

You should note that the University’s unique study rule applies to this qualification. This means that you must include at least 60 credits from OU modules that have not been counted in any other OU qualification that has previously been awarded to you.

Learning outcomes, teaching and assessment

The learning outcomes of this qualification are described in four areas:

  • Knowledge and understanding
  • Cognitive skills
  • Practical and professional skills

If you’ve successfully completed some relevant postgraduate study elsewhere, you may be able to count it towards Stage 1 of this qualification, by applying for credit transfer, reducing the number of modules you need to study. Credit transfer will impact the time you have to complete this qualification, and the six-year time limit will start from the time the qualification submitted as credit transfer was completed. So, for example, if you use as credit transfer a qualification that you were awarded two years ago, you would need to complete the remaining 120 credits in four years.

You should apply for credit transfer as soon as possible, before you register for your first module. For more details and an application form, visit our Credit Transfer website .

On completion

On successfully completing this course, we’ll award you our Master of Arts in Education or Master of Education. You’ll be entitled to use the letters MAEd (Open) or MEd (Open) after your name.

If you choose a specialist route, your degree title will show that:

  • MA in Education (Leadership and Management) or MEd (Leadership and Management)
  • MA in Education (Learning and Teaching) or MEd (Learning and Teaching)
  • MA in Education (Inclusive Practice) or MEd (Inclusive Practice)
  • MA in Education (Applied Linguistics) or MEd (Applied Linguistics)

If your masters degree is awardable with a distinction or a merit, the qualification regulations explain how you can achieve these.

You’ll have the opportunity to attend a degree ceremony.

You may be able to claim the related Postgraduate Certificate in Professional Studies in Education (K27) – although this is not available if you have used credit transfer or counted previous study towards your qualification – and/or the Postgraduate Diploma in Professional Studies in Education (E88) .

To gain all three qualifications, you must study them in sequence (postgraduate certificate, postgraduate diploma and then the MA/MEd).

Regulations

As a student of The Open University, you should be aware of the content of the qualification-specific regulations below and the academic regulations that are available on our Student Policies and Regulations  website.

We regularly review our curriculum; therefore, the qualification described on this page – including its availability, its structure, and available modules – may change over time. If we make changes to this qualification, we’ll update this page as soon as possible. Once you’ve registered or are studying this qualification, where practicable, we’ll inform you in good time of any upcoming changes. If you’d like to know more about the circumstances in which the University might make changes to the curriculum, see our Academic Regulations or contact us . This description was last updated on 19 March 2024.

To study for this masters degree, you must hold a bachelors degree from a UK university or other recognised degree-awarding body, or a qualification at an equivalent level.

In order to study this qualification you do not need to be employed in an educational setting. However, it is important that you have some experience in engaging or working with learners, children or young people as our specialisms are all explored through the lens of education. Therefore you will need to be able to apply your learning to a relevant context or learning environment. This can be through employment or other means, such as volunteering and/or special arrangements undertaken for the purposes of your study. Apart from schools and colleges, other organisations providing educational services – such as health and care education environments, youth, play, or early years work, armed forces, business and commercial environments – all could provide suitable settings to apply your learning and later carry out your dissertation.

Please note: It is a legal requirement in the UK, rather than an Open University requirement, that you must obtain Enhanced DBS clearance (or equivalent in Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland) in order to work with children on the module, Masters multi-disciplinary dissertation: education, childhood and youth (E822). This is the responsibility of you and your employer and not The Open University. If you are in doubt about your eligibility or to find out more, you should contact the relevant agency in the country in which you are proposing to conduct your study for more information.

Your spoken and written English must be of an adequate standard for postgraduate study. If English is not your first language, we recommend that you will need a minimum score of 7 under the International English Language Testing System (IELTS). Please see their website for details.

How long it takes

Learning and Teaching, Inclusive Practice, and Leadership and Management specialisms: The minimum time to complete is three years, and the maximum time to complete is six years.

Applied Linguistics specialism: This must be completed by 31 December 2026.

My name is Seow Yim Ho. I am an English language facilitator at Avenue Creative Learning. My journey at Wawasan Open University began in April 2016 and ended in December 2021.  It took me six years to complete the Bachelor of Arts (Honours) in English Studies programme. Doing a language and linguistic programme is interesting, challenging and fulfilling. Getting an academic qualification in English Studies at WOU has enhanced my position as an English language teacher to impart my knowledge effectively and efficiently to my students.  Moreover, the knowledge gained is invaluable and the learning experience is priceless.  WOU has given every working adult an opportunity to further their studies, to realise their potential, to follow their academic dreams and to propel to a higher level.  Tenacity, faith, and hard work are the very essence of success.

These new perspectives allow me to bring my career to greater heights. I urge you all to do the same!

University of Bridgeport News

What is a Master’s in Secondary Education in CT?

What You’ll Learn in a Secondary Education Master’s Program

While the median annual wage for middle school teachers hovers around $60,000, the top ten percent earn over six figures! And the same is true for high school teachers — the median annual wage is slightly higher, at $62,360, but the top ten percent earn more than $101,710.

So, if you’re wondering how to boost yourself into that top 10% bracket, the answer is simple. Spend a short couple of years studying for your master’s in Secondary Education degree . If you’re passionate about preparing middle and high school students for college, career, and beyond, a Secondary Education master’s program might be the perfect next step for your career.

This article will discuss what candidates can expect from a master’s in Secondary Education, including course requirements , as well as secondary education certifications in CT, using University of Bridgeport’s Secondary Education master’s program as an example.

What are Secondary Education master’s programs?

MS in Secondary Education degrees prepare individuals to teach and instruct a single subject to students in grades 7-12.

Additionally, each secondary degree program focuses on a specific subject area with certain standards and requirements set by each state’s education department. For example, master’s in Secondary Education programs in Connecticut prepare graduates to pass the Praxis II content knowledge exam for secondary subject areas.

Furthermore, the state of Connecticut requires secondary education teachers to earn their Master’s degree to maintain their licensure and earn their Professional Educator certificate.

What courses do students take as part of Secondary Education master’s programs in CT?

In secondary education, teachers must become masters of their specific subject, spending years studying it and transferring that knowledge to students. Because of this, many educators choose content areas that interest them personally. In doing so, educators further inspire and motivate students to reach their full academic potential and goals in their specific subject area.

For example, at University of Bridgeport, our students can pursue Secondary Education certifications in Connecticut with program options in:

  • Business: Allows graduates to teach various business-related subjects at the secondary level, such as accounting, marketing, and entrepreneurship.
  • English: Instill a love of literature and language for high school students through writing instruction, critical thinking development, and a diverse and inclusive curriculum and environment.
  • History and Social Studies: Students gain expertise in historical and social science areas to develop students critical thinking, civic engagement, and historical analysis skills.
  • Mathematics: Develops graduates’ understanding of mathematical concepts and teaching strategies. Teachers in this subject area create challenging learning environments that focus on problem-solving skills and mathematical fluency.
  • Music: Students gain knowledge and skills needed in various musical endeavors, such as vocal performance, instrumental music, and music theory. They also develop a love of and appreciation for many different types of music.
  • Remedial Language Arts and Reading: Supports literacy of middle and high school students. Educators typically work one-on-one, identifying needs and developing individualized instruction plans, using evidence-based practices to build reading fluency, comprehension, and writing skills.
  • Science (including Biology, Chemistry, Earth Science, General Science, and Physics): Students develop a deeper understanding and learn effective teaching strategies for their subject area. Science curricula focus on scientific inquiry, critical thinking, and an appreciation for the natural world.

No matter which area of specialization, students in our Secondary Education master’s programs gain experience in the field through student teaching residencies and complete academic research by writing a thesis.

College launches new online MSED in Ed Studies w/Concentration in Higher Ed Systems, Policy, Leadership

Starting in the Fall semester of 2024, the College of Education will launch a new master’s program in Educational Studies with a concentration in Higher Education Systems, Policy and Leadership .

Purdue students seated, working on their laptops in a large hall.

The master’s will focus on preparing leadership-ready graduates who challenge the status quo of PK-22 education both domestically and internationally. University employees may find this a great opportunity for professional development and growth.

This 30-credit degree leads to a non-licensure master’s concentration to engage students in critical thinking about PK-22 educational systems, leadership, and governance, and current issues and policies impacting the internal and external PK-22 educational environments. The program features the integration of select PK-22 and higher education courses that explore the cultural, historical, economic, and social factors present in contemporary education systems. It will also include course offerings in educational leadership, governance, policy, finance, law, and international education.

“We’re thrilled to offer this new non-licensure pathway for higher education professionals who might want to pursue leadership roles in student, academic, or financial affairs spaces, both internal and external to higher education institutions,” said Terron Phillips , clinical assistant professor of higher education. “Contemporary higher educational leadership requires the pairing of foundational field knowledge and skill with boldly innovative vision toward addressing difficult issues in the field; these are the tools with which we aim to equip our graduates.”

For a Fall 2024 start, the application deadline is June 1, 2024.
