Naslen and Mathew shine in 'Neymar', but it's the canine star that steals the show
Neymar, the debut film by Sudhi Maddison, featuring Naslen, Mathew and the canine star 'Neymar', is a thrilling entertainer. Despite moments of emotional intensity, it transcends the typical human-animal emotional drama to create a vibrant energy that keeps the audience engaged throughout.
The plot of the movie centres around the dynamic between two close friends, Kunjava (portrayed by Mathew) and Sinto (portrayed by Naslen), both ardent football fans, and how their lives take an unexpected turn when Neymar comes into their lives. While the plot of Neymar is straightforward and predictable, the film manages to captivate the audience with its unique execution. Neymar takes a unique approach compared to the usual heartwarming stories about the special bond between humans and their pets. Rather than focusing on the positive aspects, the movie delves into the consequences that arise when a dog causes trouble. However, the film does so in a humorous and lighthearted manner.
In the first half of the movie, the audience is introduced to Kunjava, Sinto, and their families, and how Neymar, the mischievous yet understanding dog, enters their lives, leaving an impact on each of them. The movie establishes the premise of their lives and the influence of Neymar. Director Sudhi Maddison's ability to capture Neymar's mannerisms is truly impressive. Throughout the movie, Neymar follows commands seamlessly, creating a natural and authentic on-screen presence. The result is a portrayal that is so convincing, it's as if the dog is unaware of the camera's presence.
Fond memories of Kazan Khan; Johny Antony recalls the versatile villain's acting performances
Thirimali Movie review: Meandering through the path to nowhere
The initial half of the movie concludes on an emotive climax, leaving a lingering question for the latter half. It's in the latter part that the film undergoes a remarkable transformation, presenting Neymar in an entirely different backdrop that is nothing short of captivating. Viewers are bound to root for Neymar ardently throughout the second half.
When it comes to performances, Mathew and Naslen deliver outstanding acting throughout the film. The audience will undoubtedly connect with Naslen's character, who is portrayed as a loyal and sincere friend to Mathew's character. Moreover, Vijayaraghavan and Shammi Thilakan's bittersweet relationship is another highlight of the film. Their scenes with Johny Antony are remarkable. Yog Japee's performance is decent, although his character doesn't offer anything particularly outstanding to the audience. However, it is Neymar who steals the show. The dog's performance in the movie is so effortless, capturing even the smallest nuances and details. Neymar's portrayal is so impressive that he becomes the sole focus of attention in almost all the scenes he appears in.
View this post on Instagram A post shared by Sudhi Maddison (@sudhi_maddison)
Despite the brilliant acting performances and nuanced shots, there are instances where certain scenes in Neymar may come across as overly dramatic, seemingly added solely for emotional value. This is particularly evident in some of the climax sequences. Additionally, towards the end, the movie may feel a bit prolonged, but this does not detract significantly from the overall viewing experience. Sudhi Neymar strikes a perfect balance between feel-good and entertainment, thanks to Sudhi Maddison's commendable efforts.
The film is a testament to the fact that animal-based movies can be well-made and engaging. Maddison has expertly woven shots that leave the audience awestruck. While dog enthusiasts will undoubtedly appreciate this movie, it has something for everyone to relish. The film's blend of comedy, entertainment, and emotion makes it a must-watch for those seeking a cinematic experience that delivers it all.

When the name Neymar is used for a movie, people might think it’s related to football.
But the new Malayalam flick Neymar refers to the name of a local breed dog which is the central character. Pets have now become a trend with the change in living style of people.
The film utilises all these advantages so that people can connect the project with their pets. It also makes use of sequences involving dog shows to make people engaged.
Being his debut, director Sudhi Maddison invests his time to research dog training and other aspects related to pets.
Though Malayalam movies like Jimmy Ee Veedinte Aiswaryam (2019), and CID Moosa (2003) portrayed dogs in pivotal characters, this one is different and is dedicated to the heroism of “Neymar”.
Neymar’s show

In Neymar , the main characters are played by Mathew Thomas (Aakamsh aka Kunjava) and Naslen (Shinto Chakola), both close friends.
Kunjava has a crush on his classmate who owns a dog. To woo her attention, Kunjava and Shinto decide to pet a dog.
However, Kunjava’s mother denies him permission saying that her husband Sahadevan (Shammy Thilakan) doesn’t allow it.
But somehow, the youths get a local breed named “Neymar” from a pet shop owned by Babu (Maniyan Pilla Raju).
Kunjava is now on cloud nine as he starts interacting with his crush over the phone and a small relationship starts between them.
But to make things worse, “Neymar” becomes notorious in their village — Randu Kai in the Kothamangalam district.
The dog becomes a headache to the villagers as it starts catching hens from nearby houses. It even injures the son of a police officer.

This creates a big problem, Kunjava’s father Sahadevan sends the dog to an unknown place, with the help of a truck driver.
But when Kunjava and Shinto come to know that the dog was transported to Puducherry, they both leave for Puducherry.

The second part of the story, or precisely, the heroism of “Neymar” starts here.
In Puducherry, Neymar stays with Gabriel (Yog Japee), a powerful person who is into dog shows and other activities.
At a dog show happening in Sevalpet, Gabriel wants Neymar to win games so that he would get his dog Sulthan back, which he gives away to someone else after losing a match.
Gabriel trains Neymar. Kunjava and Shinto also become part of this race, as the story moves forward.
Meanwhile, the parents of Kunjava and Shinto — Sahadevan and Chackola (Vijayaraghavan) — and their other friend Thomas (Johny Anthony) reach Puducherry in search of their sons.
This trio is well placed in the movie as they are good in their comic timing.
Finally, Neymar wins all the rounds in the dog show. The tournament is similar to the one that is shown in the Kannada movie Charlie 777 (2022).
In the end, it goes back to Kerala along with Kunjava and Shinto.
Wishing good luck to #MathewThomas & the entire cast and crew of #Neymar movie releasing tomorrow 👍🔥 pic.twitter.com/L33tfiHK6h — Lokesh Kanagaraj (@Dir_Lokesh) May 11, 2023
Comedy is highlight
The highlight of the movie is its comedy sequences.
The combination of Mathew Thomas and Naslen worked well in the film.
A poster of Mathew Thomas’ ‘Neymar’. (Supplied)
They were a successful combo in earlier films like Thanneer Mathan Dinangal (Watermelon Days, 2019) and Jo and Jo (2022).
Their encounter with Neymar and the comic timing of the young actors helped the movie.
The characters played by Vijayaraghavan and Shammy Thilakan — who are enemies — have been portrayed comically. Both actors are in full form.
Johny Antony as Thomas also adds charm to the comic moments. During the climax, the trio gets more important.
The women characters fade out in the second half as the story is surrounded by dogs and the Sevalpet tournament.

Performance and technical crafts.
Performance-wise, all the actors have a good role to play. Mathew and Naslen lead the race.
Yog Japee as Gabriel was pivotal in the second half.
Vijayaraghavan and Shammy Thilakan get good roles, too.
Nevertheless, Neymar is the real hero of the movie.
The time invested by the director for the dog show could have been minimised for the fact that the movie is having a running time of two hours and 41 minutes.
People who aren’t interested in pets would find these portions lagging.
Neymar has good songs composed by Shan Rahman. The background score by Gopi Sundar also works in its favour.
Cinematography by Alby captures parts of Puducherry well.

Neymar is an entertainer that has the potential to engage common audiences and pet lovers as well. The dog shows are something not familiar in Malayalam films.

Neymar movie review: A tiresome and unengaging experience
While neymar, the standout indie dog, mesmerises and astonishes viewers, the film's inability to captivate ultimately leads to a tiresome and unengaging experience..
“If you’re lucky, a dog will come into your life and change everything,” it is highly improbable for a day to pass without dog enthusiasts encountering or hearing this expression across various social media platforms. The veracity of this sentiment is unquestionable, given the longstanding recognition of dogs as humanity’s most loyal companions.
Filmmakers too have demonstrated unwavering affection for their canine friends through the creation of movies that exclusively centred around them. The extensive list includes Hachi: A Dog’s Tale (2009), Hachikō Monogatari (1987), Old Yeller (1957), Lady and the Tramp (1955), Best in Show (2000), My Dog Tulip (2009), and Marley & Me (2008), as well as As Good as It Gets (1997), A Dog’s Purpose (2017), Belle and Sebastian (2013), A Man and His Dog (2008), Hoshi Mamoru Inu (2011), 10 Promises to My Dog (2008), and 777 Charlie (2022).
Malayalam film Neymar , written and directed by debutant Sudhi Maddison, joins the ranks of these dog-centric movies. However, the question remains: Did the film succeed? Let’s find out.
The movie commences with the introduction of two young individuals, Akamsh, also known as Kunjava (Mathew Thomas), and Sinto (Naslen K Gafoor). Their main objective revolves around capturing the attention of a girl in their locality, whom Akamsh has developed feelings for. Employing various small-scale tactics, they manage to succeed in grabbing her attention. Meanwhile, Sinto, the more astute of the duo, suggests that Akamsh get a dog since the girl is a dog lover. Acting upon this idea, Akamsh acquires an indie dog named Neymar, named after the ace Brazilian footballer.
Initially, Neymar appears to be a calm dog, but it doesn’t take long for the duo to discover his mischievous side. Unaware of the consequences, Neymar’s actions begin to cause trouble in their area, leading the locals to develop animosity towards him. However, Akamsh, Sinto, their families, and neighbours gradually form a strong bond with Neymar, growing fond of him, with the exception of the patriarch of Akamsh’s household.
In the meantime, as the locals continue to voice their grievances, Akamsh’s father, Sahadevan (Shammi Thilakan), takes desperate measures. He bribes a local driver to transport Neymar to a distant place and leave him there. Devastated by this distressing news, Akamsh and Sinto embark on a quest to find Neymar, eventually discovering that he is currently in Puducherry (Pondicherry).
Determined to rescue Neymar and bring him back home, the duo ventures to Puducherry. They soon learn that Neymar is under the custody of Ghabri, a local gangster, and his associates. It becomes apparent to the audience that Ghabri intends to use Neymar as a contender in the esteemed Charles Morat tournament, a competition that demands significant physical prowess from participating dogs. The remainder of the film revolves around Akamsh and Sinto’s efforts to save Neymar and return him to his home.
Neymar undeniably takes the spotlight, serving as the film’s mesmerising allure. As an indie dog, Neymar’s presence brings a refreshing element to the narrative, distinct from the typical fancy or designer breeds. Neymar’s ethereal gazes, melodic whimpers, soul-stirring barks, and tender gestures of affection he bestows upon those surrounding him weave an exquisite tapestry of emotions, leaving viewers touched by its aesthetic beauty.
Despite the fact that a simple glimpse of a dog has the power to elicit strong reactions, causing many individuals to become overwhelmed with joy or moved to tears, the first half of Neymar falls short of evoking any emotional response. Despite the film’s marketing as a dog-centred movie, a significant portion of the initial half disappointingly sidelines the dog and instead focuses on the human characters. The presence of several superfluous moments, coupled with poorly crafted dialogues that feel outdated, further hampers the impact of most scenes in the first half. As a result, viewers are left unaffected by these sequences, diminishing the intended emotional resonance.
In contrast, the second half of the film takes a more captivating turn, presenting intriguing moments and introducing fresh characters and locales that are novel to Malayali audiences. However, even in this section, the extended duration of the film significantly impacts the viewing experience. The tendency among Malayalam filmmakers to retain almost everything they have shot without undergoing a stringent editing process has long been criticised, and unfortunately, the same rookie mistake is evident in Neymar as well.
Although Mathew Thomas and Naslen K Gafoor successfully recreate their wonderful chemistry, the lack of standout moments showcasing their rapport makes it feel repetitive. It is essential for them to avoid the same pitfall as other actor duos, such as Biju Menon and Kunchacko Boban, or Jayasurya and Anoop Menon, who appeared together in a multitude of films, eventually leading to audience fatigue.
It is imperative to put an end to the excessive reliance on the acting abilities of Shammi Thilakan and Vijayaraghavan. While they deliver commendable performances with the material provided, the scant work put into their characters — likely because it was thought they would make up for it with their performances — is indeed impeding their character journeys. Additionally, the practice of consistently offering director-turned-actor Johny Antony similar character roles with predictable trajectories in every movie must come to a halt. It’s not funny anymore.
On the contrary, the supporting actors, including Yog Japee who played the role of Ghabri, manage to outshine the lead actors with their performances, showcasing a stark contrast in their execution.
While Maddison has made an effort to do a good job, especially for a debutant, his intentions to produce an impenetrable film, which focuses more on the dog, his mischievous nature, the difficulties he encountered, and his skills than on the emotional connection the dog has with his buddies, seem to have failed.
The primary obstacle that impedes the enjoyment of the film is the lacklustre script and dialogues. With a dearth of innovative elements until the final acts, the efforts made by Adarsh Sukumaran and Paulson Skaria to inject freshness towards the end prove ineffective, as the film has already become wearisome by then. However, it is commendable how they incorporated a dog competition set in a suburban backdrop.
While Shaan Rahman’s songs do nothing for the movie, Gopi Sundar’s background score frequently detracts from the experience and grows grating. The efforts of cinematographer Alby Antony and editor Noufal Abdullah become futile as the film, unfortunately, fails to establish any connection with the audience on any level.
In short, Neymar proves to be a squandered opportunity for Malayalam cinema, as it adds to the absence of any compelling pet-centric movies in the industry, and all that we have had till now are trash like Ring Master (2014).

Neymar , Sudhi Madisson’s directorial debut celebrating the bond between two friends and their dog, is an entertainer, targeting family audiences and dog lovers. However, don’t expect the film to move you emotionally, like many other famous features around canines.
The film has little to do with football, apart from the fact that its lead characters, Aakamsh (Mathew Thomas) and Shinto (Naslen K Gafoor), are fans of the Brazil football team and its star player Neymar. The duo dream of a career in aviation, until one day, Shinto advises Aakamsh to buy a dog to impress a girl. Thus enters an indie dog into their lives… called Neymar.
But little do they know that Neymar would turn their lives upside down. Eventually, one night, Aakamsh’s father, Sahadevan (Shammi Thilakan), packs Neymar off to Pondicherry. The duo secretly travels to get the dog back only to end at the doors of Neymar’s new owner, the all-powerful Gabriel (an impressive Yog Japee) and get entangled in more problems.
While the first half, set in Kothamangalam, has a pace of its own, it is when the action shifts to Pondicherry in the second half that the film picks up steam. There is a burst of colours, exciting shots and frames, interesting characters, places, incidents and more dogs.
Neymar is the star of the film, and the rest of the team — director, cameraman (Alby), dog trainers, actors, and the crew — has done commendable work in the scenes featuring the lovable dog.
Neymar (Malayalam)
Director: sudhi madisson, cast: mathew thomas, naslen k gafoor, vijayaraghavan, shammi thilakan, johny antony, yog japee , duration: 160 minutes , storyline: on shinto’s advice, his friend aakamsh buys a dog to impress a girl, but the indie dog neymar turns their lives upside down.
The hit pair of Mathew-Naslen — this is their third film as a combo after Thanneer Mathan Dinangal and Jo and Jo — creates a lot of laughs with their dialogues and camaraderie. But they seem to have fallen into a template as actors. In fact, they are upstaged in many portions by the the senior actors Vijayaraghavan, Johny Antony and Shammi Thilakan, who play friends-cum-neighbours. Vijayaraghavan as the loud but brilliant Chackola steals the show. A massy scene featuring the trio is a treat.
A special mention must also be made about the music by Shaan Rahman and background score by Gopi Sunder, who create a vibrant sound palate for the movie.
However, predictability lets down the film in several parts. The sequences in Pondicherry, especially the scenes that show the competition for dogs, did not throw up any surprises. Also, it would have been better if the film was trimmed by half an hour.
Nevertheless, if you are looking for some laughs and entertainment, Neymar is worth a breezy watch.
Neymar is currently running in theatres.

Neymar Twitter Review: The film Neymar, which reunites Mathew Thomas-Naslen K. Gafoor, has been released. Neymar in the movie is the pet dog of a die-hard fan of the Brazil football team.
