ACE: Approved Continuing Education

ACE approval demonstrates that a provider or course has been rigorously reviewed and found to offer quality continuing education according to best practices.

ASWB’s Approved Continuing Education program has been designed to review and approve high-quality CE providers and courses, whether they are delivered in person or via distance learning. This approval means that social work continuing education programs are generally acceptable to social work regulatory boards across the United States and Canada.

Ace standards.

Regardless of whether a CE provider pursues individual course approval or provider approval, programs must adhere to the ACE standards outlined in the ACE Handbook.

States and provinces that accept ACE

The ASWB Approved Continuing Education program approves continuing education providers and individual programs. When social workers choose courses created and offered by ACE providers or individual courses approved by ACE, they can trust they will receive high-quality content accepted by most U.S. and Canadian jurisdictions to meet licensure renewal requirements.

Free Continuing Education for social workers

Introduction to continuing education (ce) for social workers.

A re you a dedicated social worker looking to enhance your knowledge and skills without breaking the bank? Look no further! In this blog post, we will explore the world of Free Continuing Education (CE) opportunities tailored specifically for social workers. Whether you're a seasoned professional or just starting out in the field, continuous learning is key to staying current and providing top-notch care to those in need. Let's dive into why Free CE is essential for social workers and where you can find these valuable resources online!

Why is CE important for Social Workers?

Continuing Education (CE) is essential for social workers to stay current with the latest research, trends, and best practices in the field. It provides an opportunity to enhance skills, knowledge, and competencies necessary for effective client care. Social work is a dynamic profession that requires ongoing learning and development to meet the diverse needs of individuals, families, and communities.

Engaging in CE helps social workers expand their understanding of various populations they serve, including marginalized groups or those facing specific challenges. By participating in CE activities such as workshops, seminars, or online courses, professionals can deepen their cultural competence and improve outcomes for clients.

Moreover, continuing education allows social workers to maintain licensure requirements set by regulatory bodies. Staying updated on ethical guidelines and legal mandates ensures practitioners uphold professional standards while delivering quality services. In today's fast-paced world where societal issues evolve rapidly, continuous learning through CE empowers social workers to adapt effectively and make meaningful contributions to society.

Where to Find Free CE Opportunities

As a social worker, staying up-to-date with the latest trends and practices in the field is crucial for providing effective support to your clients. Luckily, there are numerous opportunities available for free Continuing Education (CE) credits to help you expand your knowledge and skills.

One great place to start looking for free CE opportunities is online platforms dedicated to professional development. Websites like Social Work Today or The National Association of Social Workers often offer webinars and courses at no cost, covering a wide range of relevant topics such as mental health, diversity, and ethics.

Additionally, many universities and colleges host free workshops or seminars specifically designed for social workers seeking CE credits. Keep an eye on local events or check out university websites for upcoming opportunities in your area.

Furthermore, government agencies and non-profit organizations frequently organize training sessions that qualify for CE credits. Don't hesitate to reach out to these institutions directly or follow them on social media to stay informed about upcoming events near you.

Online vs In-Person CE Options

When it comes to Continuing Education (CE) options for social workers, there are two main choices: online and in-person courses.

Online CE courses provide flexibility and convenience, allowing you to learn at your own pace from the comfort of your home or office. They often offer a wide range of topics and can be more cost-effective than attending in-person workshops.

On the other hand, in-person CE opportunities offer a chance for networking and face-to-face interaction with instructors and fellow professionals. These events can be more engaging and hands-on, providing a different learning experience compared to online courses.

The choice between online and in-person CE options will depend on your learning style, schedule, and preferences. Some social workers may prefer the convenience of online courses, while others thrive in a traditional classroom setting.

Tips for Choosing the Right CE Courses

When it comes to choosing the right CE courses as a social worker, there are a few key tips to keep in mind. First, consider your areas of interest or specialization within the field. Look for courses that align with your professional goals and will enhance your expertise.

Next, check the credibility of the course provider. Ensure they are reputable and recognized in the field of social work. Reading reviews or seeking recommendations from colleagues can also help you make an informed decision.

Additionally, don't forget to confirm if the CE credits offered are valid and accredited by relevant organizations or licensing boards. This is crucial to ensure that your hard work and time investment will be recognized professionally.

Consider the format and delivery method of the course. Decide whether online or in-person learning suits your schedule and learning style best. Choose a course that offers flexibility while still providing valuable insights and knowledge to further develop your skills as a social worker.

The Benefits of Free CE for Social Workers

Free Continuing Education (CE) opportunities for social workers provide numerous benefits that can enhance their professional growth and development. By participating in free CE courses, social workers have the chance to stay updated on the latest trends, research, and best practices in the field. This knowledge allows them to better serve their clients and communities effectively.

Furthermore, free CE programs offer flexibility in terms of scheduling and accessibility. Social workers can engage in online courses or webinars at their convenience without having to travel or take time away from work. This flexibility is especially valuable for busy professionals juggling multiple responsibilities.

In addition to expanding their knowledge base, free CE for social workers often enables them to earn credits necessary for licensure renewal. Maintaining a current license demonstrates a commitment to ongoing learning and professionalism within the field of social work.

Taking advantage of free CE opportunities not only benefits individual social workers but also contributes to the overall improvement of the profession as a whole.

Conclusion: The Importance of Continuous Learning in the Field of Social Work

Continuous learning is a fundamental aspect of professional growth in the field of social work. As society evolves, so do the challenges faced by social workers, making it crucial to stay updated with the latest research and practices. By engaging in Continuing Education (CE) opportunities, social workers can enhance their skills and knowledge to better serve their clients.

Embracing lifelong learning not only benefits individual social workers but also contributes to improved outcomes for those they support. Free CE options provide accessible avenues for professionals to expand their expertise without financial constraints. Prioritizing ongoing education fosters a culture of excellence and compassion within the realm of social work.

The University of Tennessee at Knoxville was founded in 1794, two years before Tennessee became a state, and was originally known as Blount College. The non-sectarian school for young men struggled initially and was rechartered as the East Tennessee College in 1807 in order to receive a settlement as part of the Compact of 1806. The school temporarily closed in 1809, reopening in 1820. The original campus was landlocked and, in 1828, the college moved to Barbara Hill, now known as The Hill. The school became East Tennessee University in 1840.

During the Civil War, Tennessee was a member of the Confederate States when the Morrill Act was passed. In 1867, Congress passed a special act allowing Tennessee to participate in the program and, in 1869, East Tennessee University was designated as Tennessee’s land-grant institution. The school was required to focus on agricultural, military and mechanical subjects as part of their acceptance of the program proceeds. In 1879, the school became the University of Tennessee.

The College of Social Work at the university was established in 1942 and provides professional social work education programs that prepare students for careers in the social work profession. U.S. News & World Report ranks the University of Tennessee College of Social Work 25th in the country.

Today, the University of Tennessee in Knoxville sits on 910 acres and has an enrollment of 28,321.

The Master of Science in Social Work at the University of Tennessee in Knoxville is offered in a completely online format. GetEducated.com , a consumer organization, says that the program is one of the top accredited online programs available due to its value and affordability. UNIVERSITY of WISCONSIN-MADISON

online social work continuing education

Students make progress, stay connected in online continuing education classes

When Deanna Rymaszewski started her Advanced Dementia Care Specialist Certificate in Continuing Studies at the University of Wisconsin–Madison , she had no idea she’d be finishing up her program coursework online. But COVID-19 had other plans.

The pandemic upended many things in 2020, including most in-person classes at UW–Madison. In an effort to keep students moving ahead in their academic programs, many classes, including those offered by Continuing Studies, transitioned quickly to an online format.

Certifying skills in advanced dementia care

Rymaszewski, a clinical educator and social worker with Wisconsin’s Agrace hospice care, had taken online classes as part of her master of social work degree — and for ongoing continuing education requirements — in years past. But she still had some lingering concerns about transitioning to an online format for her certificate coursework.

“I have had issues in the past with online courses where I felt like I couldn’t stay focused due to tech issues,” Rymaszewski says. “Additionally, I have had experiences where I didn’t feel like I could ask questions and participate effectively in a group activity. I learn a lot from Q&A and group activities, so this is important to me.”

Deanna Rymaszewski, Advanced Dementia Care Specialist certificate student, UW–Madison

Fortunately, Continuing Studies, which has offered online classes for more than a decade, was fully prepared to meet her continuing education needs virtually. Like the in-person class format, online classes are taught by UW–Madison faculty and professional experts who know how to teach, connect and create community for their students — even when that community is in a digital space.

Rymaszewski was pleased to discover that not only was her remaining coursework in aging and long-term care free from technology issues, it was also effectively taught.

“I never felt like technology was a barrier to my participation,” she says of her online classes. “The Q&A was handled really well, and it helped that there was a moderator so that the instructor could focus on teaching. I think this really enhanced my learning. [Having a moderator] is one of those elements that you don’t really notice unless it isn’t there. It makes a huge difference.”

She’s grateful she’s been able to continue her certificate program, which she says will help her onboard and train new staff at Agrace in best practices related to dementia care.

“When the pandemic restrictions were put in place, I was saddened by the reality that I wouldn’t be able to attend the remaining courses in person,” says Rymaszewski. “However, my program put a lot of work into ensuring that in-person courses were well translated to an online learning environment. This allowed me to stay on track for my dementia care certification and stay connected with instructors as well as my classmates. I am beyond thankful.”

Fine-tuning her French

For Sonja Whipp, the goal of improving her French language skills was inspired by a 2020 trip to France, just before COVID travel restrictions were put in place. She’d studied French in middle and high school and was amazed by how much of what she’d learned in those early years came back to her as she toured France.

Sonja Whipp, UW-Madison Continuing Studies French student

“I decided after that trip that I wanted to brush up on my French so that the next time I travel abroad, I can communicate better,” Whipp says.

While she had taken online classes before, the notion of taking an online language class was new to her. But she was up for the opportunity and eager to practice her French conversational skills with other speakers. She says she’s glad she enrolled.

“I had a wonderful experience taking French 2 as an online class,” Whipp says. “I felt like we built a little community online as the weeks went on, and I really looked forward to having this weekly opportunity to learn new words and put our learning into practice through conversation.”

Beyond improving her vocabulary, grammar and conversation skills, Whipp found other things to love about her online class.

“I felt extremely fortunate to have an instructor from France. She taught us so much about the culture and nuances about the language that you can’t get from a book.”

Embracing the online experience

Both Rymaszewski and Whipp say they would encourage others interested in developing their skills and knowledge to consider one of UW–Madison’s online Continuing Studies classes.

“Practicing conversational skills with a group and an experienced instructor is key to improving your knowledge of a language,” notes Whipp. “And it’s really hard to do this on your own outside of a class environment.”

Rymaszewski says she would tell other behavioral health professionals to check out online classes for professional development.

“Do it! It’s a wonderful opportunity to connect with other behavioral health professionals,” she says. “UW–Madison does an amazing job of moderating and supporting online learners.”

This 60-credit program prepares you to work with individuals across the lifespan and treatment spectrum.

  • full time: 2 years
  • part time: up to 6 years

Availability

  • (mix of asynchronous and synchronous courses)

Specializations

*This represents a discount of 17% off of TCNJ’s standard tuition rate. Paraprofessionals working in HPSA communities and HBCU graduates are eligible for a further discounted rate of $514.50 per credit.

Who should pursue this program?

A counseling degree will offer you a wide variety of career pathways; many counselors work in community agencies, hospitals, or private practices and provide care directly or serve as administrators. Upon graduation, you will meet the requirements to take the National Counselor Exam to be a Nationally Certified Counselor (NCC) and be eligible to apply to be a Licensed Association Counselor (LAC) or its equivalent. Prospective students who live near the TCNJ campus are encouraged to apply to the in-person program .

Engaged Faculty

What sets our faculty apart? It’s their academic prowess and active engagement as practicing counselors. Our faculty members are immersed in the current landscape of mental health counseling, bringing firsthand experience and a practical perspective to the classroom.

The clinical mental health field is experiencing an unprecedented surge in job opportunities, reflecting the increasing recognition of mental health as an integral component of overall well-being. Employment in the field is expected to grow by 18% between 2022 and 2032, according to the latest national data . Our programs will prepare you for success, enabling you to confidently enter the workforce and command a salary that reflects your expertise and dedication.

This program consists of three 16-week terms a year, each of which is divided into two carefully curated eight-week sessions. The practicum/field experience will span a full term, and the internship will span two terms.

Courses are offered online in a blend of asynchronous and synchronous work, meaning you will do most of your work on your own time, whenever it best fits your schedule. Most classes will have a weekly live presentation that will also be recorded for those who cannot attend. (Note that while most courses do not require synchronous attendance, it is required for group counseling as well as for your practicum and internship.)

Full-time students can take two classes per term and finish in two years. Part-time students can decide how many classes to take each term but must finish within six years.

This online program leverages cutting-edge technology to enhance the learning experience and to provide essential skills for your future counseling practice. Through interactive virtual classrooms, multimedia resources, and real-time collaboration tools, you’ll be a part of a dynamic and engaging online environment that mirrors the richness of in-person instruction. Participate in simulated counseling sessions; access diverse case studies; and engage in immersive, experiential learning.

Our instructional designers have developed a no-cost introductory module to prepare you to successfully engage in the online learning environment. In addition, we’ve standardized the online classroom experience to ensure a seamless transition from course to course, even for those who might be new to online education.

Our dynamic curriculum is designed by national experts and aligned with the newly released 2024 CACREP standards. There are two tracks available: generalist practice and addiction counseling. In both you will supplement your classes with community-based engagement, independent studies, or faculty research.

Generalist practice track: Customize your course of study by pursuing the generalist practice track and choosing electives that offer a broader clinical experience.

Addiction counseling track: This track embraces multiple pathways to recovery, preparing you to work across the addiction treatment spectrum and providing a strong foundation in harm reduction.

Our application process is simple and efficient; GRE scores aren’t required, and rolling admission ensures you can start as soon as you want — even the very next term. You need to provide the following:

  • Essay (personal statement)*
  • Two letters of recommendation from faculty or employers only
  • Copy of resume
  • Official undergraduate transcript

You can also use code “GROWTCNJ” to waive the $75 application fee.

*Share with us how your lived expertise integrates into your desire to be a mental health counselor, including your aspirations for creating meaningful change in individual lives and communities.

As this is a new program, CACREP accreditation cannot be secured until the first cohort of students is ready to graduate. The CACREP application will be submitted at that time, and everyone who graduates within 18 months of the date that accreditation is secured will be deemed to have graduated from a CACREP-accredited program.
