College of Professional Studies

Northeastern University’s online Doctor of Education program provides experienced adult learners, working professionals, and scholar-practitioners from diverse backgrounds and perspectives with the practical knowledge and experience they need to transform the learning landscape. Students gain innovative approaches to create authentic change in their communities. The program was selected as the Carnegie Project on the Education Doctorate's Program of the Year for 2022-2023.

The Doctor of Education program is designed to be completed in three to four years of study—following a fast-paced quarter system in lieu of a traditional semester format. Students choose from five concentrations to create a curriculum that matches personal and professional interests. The program's dissertation in practice process will begin at the onset of your coursework as you identify your problem of practice and develop an action plan—incorporating cycles of data collection and analysis, collaboration, change work, and reflection—culminating in the dissemination of your action research findings. Our students come from diverse disciplines and professions, seeking more than just a degree. You'll gain a practical education that translates to your everyday working environment.

While all EdD courses can be completed online (except for hybrid courses in Seattle and Charlotte), annual in-person two-day residencies are held on campus. Residencies focus on networking and tools for career success and allow you to connect with faculty and fellow scholars to share knowledge and experience. You'll attend residencies* in your first and second years of the program at one of our campuses in Boston, Charlotte, or Seattle.

The Northeastern Doctor of Education degree is accredited by the New England Commission of Higher Education (NECHE) and was selected as Program of the Year by the Carnegie Project on the Education Doctorate Program for 2022-2023.

*Please note: International students enrolling in the online EdD program will be provided with an option to complete the residency through online participation in interactive sessions with fellow scholars offered during the residency period.

• You will choose one of five concentrations—higher education administration, innovative teaching and learning, transformative school leadership, workplace learning, and integrative studies—to focus your studies and further customize your curriculum.
• You'll begin dissertation in practice work at the onset of your program. You'll select a compelling educational/organizational challenge and will be assigned a faculty advisor to support your research throughout the program.
• All coursework is online—providing flexibility for working professionals. Your residencies will be fulfilled in person*, at one of our campuses in Boston, Charlotte, or Seattle.
• You'll learn alongside faculty practitioners—engaging with respected leaders who contribute to the field as authors, journal editors, school board members, bloggers, and podcasters.

*In-person participation in the residency is also available for international students.

Concentrations

• Higher Education Administration: The higher education administration concentration provides an opportunity for experienced higher education professionals to expand their previous understanding of practices within all sectors of postsecondary education—and also advance their professional practice by developing and deepening their understanding of the roles of colleges and universities in our society. Sectors examined include community colleges, four-year colleges, for-profit institutions, and research universities.
• Innovative Teaching and Learning: The innovative teaching and learning concentration focuses on transforming education through innovation, justice, and policy, by providing engaging opportunities for current and aspiring teaching and learning specialists working in various education spaces. The concentration focuses on teaching and learning both inside and outside the bounds of P-20 schools and focuses on developing and leading innovative curricula as well as professional development.
• Transformative School Leadership: The transformative school leadership concentration provides innovative opportunities for experienced education professionals who are current and aspiring leaders of early childhood centers, public or private schools, or school districts. The concentration prepares students to lead and transform educational spaces and be equipped to shape the needs of education in K-12, higher education, organizational contexts, and beyond.
• Workplace Learning: The workplace learning concentration helps professionals gain a deeper understanding of, recognize, and influence real-life social inequalities faced by marginalized populations in the workplace. Courses allow students to advance their professional practice by developing and deepening their knowledge of workplace learning, organizational dynamics, learning strategy, and ethics.
• Integrative Studies: The integrative studies concentration provides an opportunity for students to design a program of study that fits their own professional goals and includes the required foundation and research courses, concentration courses from any EdD concentration, and electives from the Doctor of Education or Doctor of Law and Policy programs.

PHD IN DISTANCE EDUCATION

MODE OF STUDY

All Programmes in the Department are offered through the Open, Distance & e-Learning mode of studies.This involves Limited face-to-face Residential Sessions to provide overview of the course at the commencement of a semester, continuation of a semester, and revision period before examinations and specially designed self-instructional study modules/lecture series availed to the students at registration time through the University’s Multimedia Portal or in Print.

SEPTEMBER EVERY YEAR

The Guidelines on Postgraduate Supervision can be accessed on the graduate school website ( www.graduateschool.uonbi.ac.ke ) while the Research Notebook is available at the University Bookstore.

Students are expected to complete the preparation of their PhD proposal, have it approved by the Graduate School and be entered for full admission before the expiry of the period  given, failure to which the student ceases to enjoy provisional registration. In extenuating circumstances, an extension of provisional admission of up to six months may be granted only once.

• Admission is confirmed only upon the production of original and certified ( by the issuing University ) copies of the degree certificate, academic transcripts and secondary level education certificate.

    v.     Academic programme 1.2(d) – A Bachelor’s degree in Education (BEd) of any field of study.

  vi.     Academic programme 1.2(e) - 1st degree in B.Ed Psychology or other related programmes.

vii.   Academic programme 1.2(f) - 1st degree in a B.Ed programme.

viii.   Academic programme 1.2(h) - 1st degree in B.Ed Special Education, Educational Psychology or other related programme.

  ix.      Academic programme 1.2(i) - 1st degree holders with education background in any field of study.

    x.     Academic programmes 1.3(a-c) – These programmes are available for applicants who do not have any qualification in education programme and yet qualify for Academic programmes d, f & g .

  xi.      Academic programmes 1.4(a-d) - Applicants for the M.Phil programmes must have Second degree in relevant area education programme from a recognized University or equivalent institution in the intended field of specialization with a minimum CGPA of 2.5 .

ARTS AND SOCIAL SCIENCES PROGRAMMES

     i.      Academic programme 2.1(a) – Applicants must have any of the following: B.A/B.SC/B.Ed degree from a recognized institution of higher learning or tertiary institution, with at least, a 2nd class lower division.

   ii.      Academic programme 2.2(a) - 1st degree with at least a 2nd class lower division in Social Sciences or Business (Applicants will have to pass an interview).

  iii.      Academic programmes 2.2(b, c & d) - 1st degree with a 2nd class division in Economics or related programmes with statistics or quantitative techniques as one of the subjects read.

  BUSINESS PROGRAMMES

i.    In the case of the MBA programmes , holders of final professional examinations certificate and membership of relevant professional bodies such as Institute of Chartered Accountants Ghana(ICAG), Association of Chartered Certified Accountants (ACCA), Chartered Institute of Management Accountants (CIMA), Chartered Institute of Banking (CIB); Chartered Institute of Personnel and Development (CIPD); Chartered Institute of Taxation, Ghana (CITG); Chartered Institute of Marketing(CIM); The Chartered Institute of Insurance (CII): Chartered Institute of Human Resource and Development (CIHRD):   Certified Public   Accountants (CPA);   Charted Institute of Procurement and Supply   (CIPS) can apply.   For the MSc programmes (No. 3.3a-c), holders of professional qualifications such as CIPS, CIM, ICA, ACCA, CPA and CIMA can apply .  

ii.   Candidates applying for the MSc. in Procurement and Supply Chain Management programme should have a first degree or its equivalent from an accredited Institution in Procurement, Supply Chain Management, Logistics or Material Management. In addition, candidates applying for the MSc. Programmes must have, at least, three (3) years post qualification work experience.

iii. Applicants for the M.Com programmes must have an MBA in the relevant areas with a minimum CGPA of 2.5.

PhD Distance Education Admission?: In 2024, if you want to join a Ph.D. program in India, you need to take a national or university entrance exam, while some institutions require personal interviews as well. For PhD admissions at Delhi University, CUET scores will be used. NTA has released the schedule for PhD Entrance Examinations at DU, BBAU, BHU, and JNUU. UGC NET is another important exam for central universities.  Applicants must have a minimum of 50% aggregate marks in their master’s degree and a valid entrance exam score to qualify for the program. 20 May 2024 is the last date to apply for PhD program at IMTS Institute and William Carey University.

PhD Admission Quick Updates

• Application is open at IMTS Institute for PhD program with approx fee of INR 90,000 and subjects like Chemistry, English, Hindi. Students can apply before 20 May 2024. https://imtsinstitute.com/
• William Carey University has started admission for the PhD program in regular mode with an approximate fee of INR 1 Lakhs and subjects like Economics, History, Commerce. The last date of admission is 30 May 2024 . https://williamcareyuniversity.ac.in/

Note: PhD course is not approved to be offered by the distance education mode. The University Grants Commission (UGC) in 2017 issued a notification stating that the PhD degree pursued from the distance education mode will no longer be approved by the organization.

• Phd Overview: The Ph.D. program in India, in 2024, will provide students with unique qualifications and knowledge. This 3 to 6-year advanced research program covers several topics like the humanities, sciences, engineering, management, pharmacy, mass communication, law, etc. A master’s degree with 50% and a qualifying entrance exam score are required for admission to PhD courses. 
• Eligibility:  For admission to Ph.D. programmes, students should have at least 50% aggregate marks in their master’s degree. This requires a valid entrance exam score for the chosen college.
• Fees:  Ph.D. fees range from 70,000 to 1,20,000 Indian rupees. The fee may vary according to the university/institute.
• Entrance:  In 2024, Ph.D. programs will require national or university entrance tests and optional personal interviews. NTA will issue the PhD Entrance Examination schedule for DU, BBAU, BHU, JNU and other, whereas central universities rely on UGC NET. To get into these programs, applicants should have a high entrance exam score.
• Subjects:  The highest level of study can be found in a wide variety of Ph.D. specializations. Chemistry, history, economics, English, Hindi, commerce, computer applications, and business administration are all available. Ph.D. students can choose a specialization that matches their interests and academic aspirations.
• Last Date for Admission:  The latest admission date, usually 20 May 2024 , is significant for Ph.D. students. Staying updated about this deadline helps candidates submit their applications on time and increases their chances of getting into their selected Ph.D. program.

The Phd Distance program covers a variety of fields, including the humanities/arts, science, engineering, management, pharmacy, mass communication, law, and commerce. PhDs last 3–6 years. To apply for a Ph.D. at a top PhD college in 2024, you must score at least 50% in your master’s degree or a comparable CGPA and have a valid PhD entrance exam score.

PhD Distance Education Admission 2024

There is no approval for the PhD course to be offered by distance education. According to a notification issued by the University Grants Commission (UGC) in 2017, the PhD degree pursued through distance education will no longer be approved by the commission as it was previously.

The University Grants Commission (UGC) does not recognize Ph.D. distance learning programs in India. This means that PhD degrees Provided through distance learning are not considered equivalent to Ph.D. degrees  Provided through regular Mode

The UGC believes that PhD programs should be provided through a hands-on learning experience that allows students to interact with their professors. Distance learning programs, on the other hand, often lack this level of interaction.

Also, the UGC is concerned about the quality of PhD distance learning programs. Some Fake institutions offer PhD programs online, and the UGC does not want to endorse these programs.

Eligibility Criteria for PhD Admission

• The General Eligibility criteria for admission to the Ph.D. program is a master’s degree with 50% marks.
• Candidates who passed their M.Phil qualification with 50% are eligible to apply for PhD admission.

The fee structure for PhD admission varies as per the university, PhD course is only allowed to be pursued in regular mode. The fee at WC University for PhD admission is INR 1,26,500.

Based on the decision of 550th Commission Meeting held on 18th February, 2021, it is informed that UGC (DEB) Bureau has discontinued the practice to upload Category-I HEIs names which are entitled to offer Open and Distance Learning (ODL) programmes; as per UGC (Categorisation of Universities (only) for Grant of Graded Autonomy] Regulations, 2018; on UGC website. Further, the information regarding Category-I HEIs offering ODL programmes may be sought from concerned bureau of the UGC.

PhD Distance Education Admission 2024?:   It is important to note that the (UGC) does not recognize or validate PhD programs offered through distance education in India. The PhD program requires a lot of research, hands-on training, and close supervision, which is not possible through distance learning. 

Students who are interested in doing PhD can take admission to this course in regular mode. To be eligible for a PhD program in India, candidates must have a PG degree (master’s or MPhil) in the relevant field from a recognized university, with a minimum of  55%  marks. The admission process includes an entrance  exam  and an  interview . The duration of a PhD program ranges from  3 to 6  years, with fees between  INR 50,000 to INR 2,00,000  per year, depending on the universities.

While PhD distance education is not a valid option in India, regular PhD programs offer a complete program that includes in-depth research under the guidance of a supervisor, culminating in the submission of a doctoral thesis. Students who complete PhD in regular mode have career opportunities in academia,  research institutions ,  industries , and  high-level positions  in various sectors. The salary package for PhD graduates is based on the job profile and experience, with an average range of  INR 12-35 LPA .

What is a PhD Program?
