Making CHOICES: Migrant and refugee women’s experiences of fertility management

Lead researcher: dr alexandra hawkey, about the project.

The Translational Health Research Institute (THRI) is offering a research scholarship to a highly motivated PhD candidate to work within a research group addressing migrant and refugee women’s fertility management. The project is funded through the National Health and Medical Research Council (NHMRC).

This project aims to examine migrant and refugee women’s perception and experiences of fertility management, focusing on fertility decision-making, contraception, and management of unplanned pregnancies. The project will utilise novel qualitative and arts-based methods, including body-mapping and interviewing. Health literacy and service support needs will be addressed through the co-design, co-production and evaluation of an online health education resource, a knowledge translation art exhibition and recommendations for health promotion and healthcare provision. The PhD candidate will focus on one area of research within the broader project, working in collaboration with the project team.

THRI is a research institute within Western Sydney University. THRI researchers conduct world-class research on health and health outcomes, tackling health and wellbeing challenges locally, nationally and globally. At THRI Higher Degree Research candidates are offered a vigorous program of workshops, seminars, symposia, and networking roundtables. Support is also available for conference attendance and fieldwork costs, both in Australia and overseas.

What does the scholarship provide?

  • Domestic candidates will receive a tax-free stipend of $32,192(AUD) per annum for up to 3 years to support living costs, supported by the Research Training Program (RTP) Fee Offset.
  • International candidates will receive a tax-free stipend of $32,192(AUD) per annum for up to 3 years to support living costs. Those with a strong track record will be eligible for a tuition fee waiver.
  • Support for conference attendance, fieldwork and additional costs as approved by School/Institute.

International candidates are required to hold an Overseas Student Health Care (OSHC) (opens in a new window) insurance policy for the duration their study in Australia. This cost is not covered by the scholarship.

Eligibility criteria

We welcome applicants from a range of backgrounds, who are keen to apply their skills to address inequities in migrant and refugee women’s sexual and reproductive health. In particular, the project is suitable for candidates with strong interests in contraception, abortion, and reproductive coercion using intersectional, reproductive justice, and other feminist frameworks and qualitative methods, including creative visual methodologies.

The successful applicant should:

  • hold qualifications and experience equal to one of the following (i) an Australian First Class Bachelor (Honours) degree, (ii) coursework Masters with at least 25% research component, (iii) Research Masters degree, or (iv) equivalent overseas qualifications.

Wolverines to Close Regular-Season Slate at Chattanooga Classic

ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- In its final tune-up before the postseason, the 39th-ranked University of Michigan women's golf team heads to Chattanooga, Tenn., from Sunday through Tuesday (April 7-9) for the Chattanooga Classic. The 54-hole event features a 16-team field playing at the Council Fire Golf Course.

• There are 16 team making up the Chattanooga Classic, including 10 ranked in the top 100 in the nation. The field is comprised of No. 34 South Florida, No. 39 Michigan, No. 47 Colorado State, No. 58 UTSA, No. 71 Western Kentucky, No. 77 Chattanooga, No. 88 North Florida, No. 92 Iowa, No. 97 Yale, No. 100 Campbell, Charlotte, Cincinnati, East Tennessee State, Lipscomb, Middle Tennessee and Xavier.

• U-M will travel five starters and an individual to the Chattanooga Classic. Senior Monet Chun , sophomore Sydney Sung , freshman Sidney Yermish , sophomore Lauren Sung and sophomore Mara Janess make up U-M's starting five, while freshman Grace Wang will travel and compete as an individual.

• Fifth-year senior Hailey Borja will miss her first career event, but for a great reason. She is in the midst of competing at the 2024 Augusta National Women's Amateur, where she advanced to the final round at Augusta National. She had started 47 consecutive events, having not missed an event with the Wolverines.

• So far this season, Michigan has had a Wolverines finish among the top 10 in seven of eight events. Borja and Chun lead U-M with four apiece, while graduate student Mikaela Schulz led in U-M's non-team event -- the Chippewa Invitational. Borja has a season-best tie for fifth at the Stanford Intercollegiate (Oct. 20-22), while Chun tied for runner-up honors at the Nexus Collegiate (Feb. 12-14). For their careers, Borja has 18 top-10 finishes (47 events), while Chun has 10 (38 events).

• Chun continues to hold the U-M scoring lead with a career-best 72.29 scoring average. She has carded seven sub-par tallies, including tying for U-M's season-low twice with her 67 (-5) at the Glass City Invitational (final) and the Ruth's Chris Invitational (first). Borja is close behind with her career-best pace of 73.21 per round. She leads U-M with eight sub-par tallies and, like Chun, has twice fired a U-M season- and career-low 67 -- in the final round of the Gators Invitational (March 1-2) and second round of the Valspar Augusta Invitational.

• Along with Borja, Yermish is one of two Wolverines to start all eight events. Yermish is averaging 74.58 per round with a trio of sub-70 tallies -- a career-low 68, twice in the final round of the Ruth's Chris Tar Heel Invitational (Oct. 9-10) and the first round of the Valspar Augusta Invitational. He adds a 69 (-1) in the final round of the Gators Invitational.

• For the fourth time this season and eighth time in their careers, twins Sydney and Lauren Sung will be in the U-M starting lineup together. This season, Sydney has averaged 75.59, while Lauren has posted 75.43 per round.

• Wang makes her way back to tournament play after last playing in late October. The rookie has played in three events with a pair of starts and is averaging 77.22 per round. She fired a career-low 73 (+1) in the final round of the Stanford Intercollegiate (Oct. 20-22).
