Tips for Selecting Ideal Sports Research Topics

Good sports research topics make putting your essay together more enjoyable. When that happens, your writing flows better, and your readers will enjoy it too. Take a look at these tips that college students can use to select the perfect research paper topics.

You Don’t Have To Rehash The Same Old Ideas

Let’s be honest – researching and following methodology in a research paper is tedious. But if you’re doing it on a subject you enjoy, your passion for the topic should keep you motivated and engaged. And you’ll likely produce high-quality work.

Choose A Topic With Plenty Of Sources

At the same time, make sure it’s narrow enough to get specific and provide insight. You have to find the right balance. You want to have enough information to get stuck into the topic, but not so much that it’s overwhelming.

A Sports Research Paper Needs To Be Relevant

A trending or hot topic is much easier to write about. And your readers are going to thank you for it. As long as they relate to what you’re saying, you’re halfway there. Take a look at news coverage of the industry. Are there any current discussions or debates? Or has a particular sports personality tweeted something viral?

Use Evidence For Your Sports Paper

You’re going to need sources to back up your claims. Are there enough articles, books, and other sources on hand to conduct an extensive study? You’ll need research papers, journals, documentaries, or interviews with experts in the field.

Bring Something New To The Table

Instead of writing on something already well-covered, try and contribute something new. Think about finding practical applications or implications for the sporting industry. If originality isn’t your strong suit, there’s an option to buy a research paper to get excellent results. Muhammad Ali: A Case Study in Purpose-Driven Decision Making

Muhammad Ali, born Cassius Marcellus Clay Jr., rose from a poor family in segregated Louisville, Kentucky to international fame, winning three heavyweight boxing titles and becoming a civil rights leader and role model for millions of people around the world. Rather than letting his fear of flying keep him from competing in the 1960 Olympics, he traveled to Italy wearing a parachute -- and easily won the gold medal in boxing. When he returned to the U.S. as a gold medalist, Ali used his growing fame to bring attention to racism and humanitarian causes he supported, including his then-controversial decision to refuse to fight in the Vietnam War. Professor Robert Simons discusses how Ali made decisions throughout his life and career to leave a lasting impact on the world in his case, “Muhammad Ali: Changing the World.”

A WHOLE NEW BALL GAME: WHY SPORTS TECH IS A GAME CHANGER

Report from the capgemini research institute, technology now plays a vital part in many aspects of sports – enhancing the viewing experience, encouraging fan engagement, assisting teams and players to increase performance, and more..

And as technology itself advances, so does its potential for enriching the sports experience. In our newest Capgemini Research Institute report, A whole new ball game: Why sports tech is a game-changer , we explore the topic of technology in sports in depth, with a look towards the future.

To understand more about the role of technology in sports, we conducted a global survey of 12,000 sports fans across 11 countries, as well as in-depth interviews with professional sportspeople and industry experts.

Our analysis found that fans increasingly use technology to enhance their viewing experience both inside and outside the venue. The benefits of technology are extensive and span fan engagement, news and insights, experience enhancement, and new immersive and digital experiences.

As technology continues to enhance the viewing experience, fans indicate that they will even prefer to consume sports at home or outside of the venue, marking a real change in attitudes towards sports consumption. On the professional end, technology is transforming the player experience with new tools and systems to improve training and performance, and to prevent injuries.

Importantly, we also find that technology can play a significant role in increasing diversity, inclusiveness, and environmental sustainability in sports – areas in which fans still expect teams to do more.

In order to help organizations navigate the digital future of sports, we conclude the report with a series of actionable recommendations on how technology can be employed to further enhance the sports experience for fans, teams, and players alike.

Editorial: The Future of Sport Business

There has never been a better time to consider the future of sport business than during a global pandemic that has severely impacted both the community and professional sport communities. These disruptive impacts have been wide ranging, affecting the delivery of sport as well as the financial and social outcomes delivered by sport organizations. As noted by Smith and Westerbeek ( 2004 ), “we care about the future because we have to live in it, as will our children and their children. It is important that they have the opportunity to experience and enjoy sport… which requires a healthy global sport industry” (p. xi). The impact of COVID-19 continues to show that there is no returning to “business as usual” and as such, sport organizations (will) have (to) reinvent themselves and their underpinning business models. This is not only to survive, but thrive in continued disruptive conditions. To that end it is important to realize that the business of sport is not limited to the front office of those who run the management and marketing of sport organizations. Value is created (and hence business developed) across the whole of the value chain of sport – on and off the field, from sporting goods manufacturers to athlete management agencies, and by an army of millions of volunteers in community sport. From a number of perspectives, six teams of authors have provided various insights by contributing their work to this Research Topic.

Westerbeek and Eime describe the changing social and policy context in which sport is produced, delivered, and consumed as context and foundation for an integrated framework that incorporates participation in sport with participation in leisure-time physical activity more broadly. In order to position sport in the broader context of leisure-time physical activity, the concept of physical literacy is reviewed and integrated into the theoretical foundations of a new lifespan framework—the Physical Activity and Sport Participation (PASP) framework. The authors express the hope that in recognition of the changing patterns of participation in physical activity and sport across the lifespan, the PASP framework can contribute to coordinated and integrated physical activity and sport policy development, which, in turn, can lead to holistic strategies that tackle the global physical inactivity crisis.

The purpose of the study conducted by Jang et al. was to identify consumer groups through consumer segmentation in the exponentially growing esports industry. The study focused on “game experiences” in the context of esports gameplay consumption. They developed a matrix of esports gameplay based on high/low esports gameplay, viewing esports, and hardware enthusiasm leading to four esports gameplay consumer groups: all-around gamer, conventional player, observer, and recreational gamer. The proposed esports consumers' clustering is an example of research that will contribute to mapping and defining one of the world's fastest growing sport business sectors.

Foster et al. have responded to the growing demand for data analytics talent in (elite) sport organizations. As hiring analytics talent is critical, applicants can command high levels of compensation, in part because they are attractive to companies in many other industries. One of the implications of this broader adoption of analytics across elite sports clubs, will be a greater emphasis on continued innovation across many areas such as player squad assembly, pre-game and within-game strategy, and health and fitness. A further implication is that executive talent from outside of professional sport is increasingly more relevant and valuable to the sport industry. In the near future, the demand (and hence competition) for off-the-field talent in sport business will increasingly intersect with other industries, opening opportunities for cross-pollination and innovation beyond the boundaries of the sport industry.

In their contribution, Jackson and Dawson reflect on the meaning, value and significance of sport. They introduce the challenges facing the global business of sport and describe the privileged position of sport in society, as “sporting exceptionalism.” They then use the example of women's professional sport to illustrate three key steps for an alternative future, while also signaling risks associated with following a hegemonic male model of consumer capitalist sport. They conclude that the more dominant or hegemonic any existing social system is (including sport), the more difficult it is to consider alternative futures. However, there lies tremendous potential value in applying the concept of alternative futures to envisioning a direction for the sport industry. It allows necessary contemplation about new structures, policies, and programmes that will positively transform global sport business.

Chmait and Westerbeek look at how artificial intelligence has transformed the way in which sport is consumed and analyzed. In this perspective paper, the authors present a high-level, non-technical, overview of the machine learning paradigm that motivates its potential for enhancing sports (performance and business) analytics. Founded on a summary of relevant research literature in areas where artificial intelligence and machine learning have been applied to the sport industry, they present some hypothetical scenarios of how artificial intelligence and machine learning could shape the future of sports. They conclude their work with ominous questions. Will artificial intelligence 1 day be shaping the spending behavior of sports fans by exploiting their fan infused emotional vulnerabilities? Or if indeed, artificial intelligence will sacrifice the health of some athletes in favor of the bigger team winning the championship?

In the final article of the Research Topic, Jenkin et al. focus their attention on the rapidly growing, but largely ignored market segment of older adults as sport participants. They investigated how managers in Australian National and State Sporting Organizations perceive sport for older adults. Contextualized in the perspective of organizational change, a framework for marketing to the aging consumer was used to interpret the results. They found that older adults are not a high priority group for most sporting organizations, despite recognition of the benefits of engaging older adults. A lack of age-appropriate programmes was perceived to be a major barrier of engaging older adults. Across all sporting organizations there was broad agreement that increasing participation numbers and engaging the older fan base was important, but most sporting organizations are not (yet) ready to build “age friendly” sporting environments. The study provided insights into why this untapped market is not a priority target, and offers policy makers directions to better engage with this population group.

Across the whole of the value chain, the future of sport business will be as much determined by advancements in artificial intelligence, machine learning and sophisticated (fan and performance) data analytics as it will be through application and sourcing of new business models, tapping new markets, creating alternative revenue streams, management approaches such as alternative futures scenarios, and developing strategic partnerships beyond the sport industry. With a focus on how it impacts the business of sport, in this Research Topic we have covered a number of issues that will strongly influence the future production and consumption of elite and community sport offerings.

Research examines factors of resilient city development

by Higher Education Press

Go from resilient cities conference to bold cities. Focus on policies, actions and hot trends in resilient city development

In recent years, with rapid urbanization, the global landscape of science and technology, industry, energy, and finance has undergone profound changes. Concurrently, emergencies or sudden events including natural disasters, human-induced disasters, and socio-economic crises are posing unrelenting threats to regional environment and security.

The concept of the "resilient city," as an important principle in contemporary urban planning, emphasizes that the capacity of urban systems to absorb the impacts and pressures caused by uncertain events while maintaining essential functions, structures, and characteristics.

The Resilient Cities Congress was initiated by ICLEI (International Council for Local Environment Initiatives)–Local Governments for Sustainability in 2010, as the first annual global forum dedicated to resilient cities studies.

In 2020, the Resilient Cities Congress was renamed the "Daring Cities," with the aim of building on the legacy of the Resilient Cities Congress series, enhancing the leadership role of governments, researchers, business leaders , and community organizers in urban decision-making process when responding to emergencies or sudden events, and forming new methods of urban governance and multi-stakeholder partnership models.

Drawing from the materials and scholarly work presented at these congresses, this research comprehensively reviews the evolution of resilient cities over the last decade through the lenses of policies and actions, summarizing the cutting-edge and current trends.

The work titled " From Resilient Cities Congress to Daring Cities: Policies, Actions, and Hot Trends of Resilient City Development " was published in the journal Landscape Architecture Frontiers .

Overall, the journey of global resilient cities unfolds in three phases of global commitment and framework establishment, path exploration and action, and experience translation and adaption. And after synthesizing the cases of global pioneering resilient city and regional construction cases from the Daring Cities, the experience of resilience actions can be summarized in five aspects:

  • Multi-level governance and multi-stakeholder collaboration.
  • Developing circular economy, and financing resilience and insuring cities.
  • Nature-based solutions.
  • Equal opportunities and access to basic services.
  • Open data and strong data governance capability.

Throughout the previous Resilient Cities Congress series, the development of resilient cities in the past decade has evolved from theoretical exploration, framework establishment, and formulation of target strategies towards the implementation of regional and local actions and follow-up assessment, while integrating theoretical research into political decision-making that has in turn driven the progress of urban sustainable development.

Nowadays, with the development of big data and analytics technology, the construction of resilient cities not only requires deepening implementation at economic and social aspects, but also necessitates a series of effective measures in the field of cyber resilience to seize opportunities and mitigate risks, where information technology can and will play a vital role.

Looking ahead, it is crucial to further promote local resilience actions and practices, and to put more effort in filling the gaps of empirical research on resilient cities. It is of great practical significance to translate international resilience development results and action experience into localized efforts both in theory and practice at the national, regional, and city scales, so as to promote the full implementation of climate action and resilience building worldwide.

Editorial on the Research Topic Adopting New Technologies in Sports Marketing

New technologies have revolutionized nearly every aspect of human existence, impacting how companies commercialize goods and services ( Grewal et al., 2020 ). More radical innovations are quickly emerging on the heels of the present generation of innovations, such as greater computing capacity, the Internet, social media, and mobile devices and applications. These technological advances are exerting profound effects on the practice of marketing ( Gillpatrick, 2019 ). Specifically, applications and solutions of technological innovations compel marketers to pre-emptively test their unpredictable outcomes and effects ( Kumar and Ramachandran, 2018 ).

New technologies are also rapidly revolutionizing the sport industry landscape, providing sport marketers—from small sport retailers to top sport brands—with novel methods to reach customers. For example, technological innovations, such as augmented reality (AR; Goebert and Greenhalgh, 2020 ), sport wearable technology ( Kim and Chiu, 2019 ), the meteoric rise of mobile commerce and smartphones ( Kim et al., 2017 ), and virtual reality (VR; Uhm et al., 2020 ), have driven major changes in the sport industry and influenced how sport markets are managed. These emerging technologies are fundamentally transforming sport consumer experiences and expanding the boundaries of sport marketing research.

Studies of new technology in sport, however, have been largely neglected in the greater body of sport marketing literature with minimal attention to their merits or demerits ( Ratten, 2020a ). In fact, studies on new technologies in sport marketing have been mainly published in journals of other disciplines rather than those dedicated to sport marketing (e.g., Kim and Ko, 2019 ; Goebert and Greenhalgh, 2020 ). Greater scholarly attention to adopting new technologies in sport marketing is needed to better understand and embrace these innovations in the sports industry. The COVID-19 pandemic has shown us that there is a need for sport technology, particularly when cities and countries have lockdowns that restrict the ability of individuals to play and watch sport ( Ratten, 2020b ).

This Editorial and four articles introduce and add to the growing body of knowledge regarding the development and use of technology in sport marketing.

Two of the articles contribute new knowledge regarding the theme of new media and communication tools. Particularly in the era of COVID-19, these two articles underscore how these media technologies offer sport consumers a sense of safety while simultaneously creating the impression of exercising and spectating a match in a real stadium despite being at home. Explaining how the COVID-19 pandemic has affected athletic events and communications in sports, Zaborova et al. present telecommunication technologies commonly utilized to enable children to perform basic gymnastic exercises at home. Specifically, Zaborova et al. explore how virtual technology can be employed in the field of education. Similarly, Lupinek et al. provide a virtual reality (VR) In-Game Advertising (IGA) congruity framework that seeks to help marketers make well-reasoned IGA development decisions through strategic choices. According to Lupinek et al. , the centralized VR IGA congruity framework not only enhances brand awareness but also imbues participants with a favorable mindset toward the IGA, ultimately increasing sales activation. In this respect, we can assume that VR is emerging as a powerful marketing tool by eliciting novel and enjoyable consumer experiences. The studies of Zaborova et al. and Lupinek et al. showed that new media technologies, such as virtual and augmented reality, are expected to continue advancing and see active application within the sports industry.

The other two articles include an investigation of social media engagement for women's sport and a valuation of sport media service. Pegoraro et al. examine how broadcasting impacts social media engagement with respect to game day WNBA team account posts, discussing how digitally streaming live sport events offers opportunities for women's sport and niche sport that lack television contracts and/or have limited resources to support their own digital streaming services. Furthermore, Pegoraro et al. consider advances in technology and changes in consumer preferences and explore how behaviors have led to numerous new broadcast options for sport leagues to distribute their contents directly to the sport market and consumers by expanding a range of choices. In addition, based on the unified theory of acceptance and the use of the technology model, Huettermann et al. build and empirically test a conceptual model of factors leading people to accept a novel sport club video service. In particular, Huettermann et al. assessed potential users' willingness to pay for a total sport club video service solution from production to distribution. Huettermann et al. provide practical implications for forward-looking developers by pinpointing relevant factors that are persuasive to sport managers willing to adopt new technologies.

The four studies that contribute to this Research Topic vary in their inquiries into existing knowledge, such as what kinds of new technologies are presently being adopted in sport marketing, how marketing strategies are implemented through new technologies, and what factors have caused these new technologies to be applied in the sport market. These studies do not inclusively mention every new technology in the sport industry as, for example, artificial intelligence ( Davenport, 2018 ) and robotics ( Mende et al., 2019 ) are currently being introduced into the sport marketing field. However, it is expected that this Research Topic serves as a cornerstone to attract readers' attention in that it provides a variety of knowledge about technologies that have thus far received little attention among sport marketing scholars.

In conclusion, our examination of this Research Topic has resulted in a novel collection of articles that further our knowledge of new technologies in sport marketing. The wealth of contents presented within this Research Topic is illustrative of the growing interest in the greater area of new technologies in sport marketing and thus provides a stepping stone to further innovative studies. We hope that the articles selected here will act as a potent stimulus for research in this exciting area and encourage the exploration of future topics that may build upon the findings presented in these papers.
