The Good Doctor EPs on Bringing the Show to a Reluctant End and What to Expect in the Final Season

A new surgeon with autism is moving in

Freddie Highmore, The Good Doctor

Freddie Highmore, The Good Doctor

David Shore always knew how The Good Doctor was going to end. Well, sort of. During a final season presentation at the Winter Television Critics Association Press Tour this weekend in Pasadena, Calif., the executive producer brought up how he'd been asked years ago how he would end another show he had worked on.

"I was asked, 'Do you know how this show is going to end?' I was asked that early on. And I said, 'Yes, I know exactly how this show will end. One day, I will get a phone call from the network telling me the show is ending,'" he said.

In other words, the network was ready for The Good Doctor to wrap.

"But on that show and on this show, we've been lucky enough to be able to plan the ending we want to do," Shore continued. "It's been a weird year, so only doing 10 episodes is unfortunate. But being able to go out on your own terms is such a blessing in this industry, and we've been fortunate."

He, along with executive producer Liz Friedman and executive producer/star Freddie Highmore took the TCA stage alongside the rest of the cast to discuss the final season. The team had paused production to come out to the press tour, and it felt as though the show ending still hadn't sunk in for this crew.

For example, Friedman noted they had initially planned for a 13-episode swan song before ABC axed the extra three installments.

The Good Doctor Season 7: Everything to Know

"But I think we're going to be able to deliver a really good finale and do what we want to do," she mused. "I mean I'm sad to — I think Shaun's going to continue his adventures without me, is how I think about it. He's still going to be out there in the world. There's always more stories when you have a great character that you can imagine, but we'll find a way to give him a great ending."

When the seventh season kicks off Feb. 20 on ABC, Shaun (Highmore) is adjusting to life as a new father while returning to work. There, he encounters a new surgeon (played by Kayla Cromer ) with autism who went into the field after learning about Shaun saving the boy in the airport back in the pilot.

"She is the first actor with autism who we've had playing a doctor on the show, and she's going to be there for a number of episodes," Friedman said. "Seeing the way the two of them interact is really fun. I think it's going to be an interesting story for everybody."

Elsewhere, Shaun's relationship with Dr. Glassman ( Richard Schiff ) continues to evolve now that Shaun has become a father and Glassman wasn't present for the birth. Schiff told TV Guide during the panel that this conflict plays out over the first few episodes of the season.

"How we addressed that was a nice layer. It was real life in a way," he said. "It was a conflict between people that sometimes feels unresolvable and how you work through that, how these characters specifically, who have a lot of love for each other worked through [it]. That was a good story to tell."

When asked about other guest stars or potential returning characters for the final season, the showrunners quickly shut the question down. "No. You're going to have to watch and see," Friedman said.

Looking ahead, Highmore isn't sure what's next, but after wrapping five seasons of Bates Motel and saying he was taking a break, only to agree to The Good Doctor three days later, he's learned never to say never.

"I think it would be unreasonable to expect the same thing to happen again and for it to continue to be in Vancouver, but I guess stranger things have happened," he said.

"You look at all the people who are up here today, all of the crew that are in Vancouver, and you realize that world you created for seven years will never exist in the same way," he continued.

"The flip side of that is, like graduating, you're excited for the future, and you're excited for new opportunities. You also realize that at some point, it's necessary and probably healthy to move on."

The Good Doctor premieres Feb. 20 on ABC.

That’s a wrap on The Good Doctor .

'The Good Doctor' Season 7, Episode 5: 'Who at Peace'

After seven seasons, the ABC medical drama finished filming its series finale Friday — and emotions are running high. As the stars of the long-running procedural say goodbye, several cast members are sharing behind-the-scenes photos from their last hours on set.

The Good Doctor Cast Exits

ABC announced in January that The Good Doctor would end after an abbreviated, 10-episode Season 7 . Two months later, it was confirmed that former series regular Antonia Thomas would reprise her fan-favorite role as Dr. Claire Browne in not one, but two Season 7 episodes, including the series finale (airdate TBA).

“ The Good Doctor  has been a once in a lifetime opportunity, but it’s time to say goodbye,” executive producers David Shore, Liz Friedman and Erin Gunn said in a previous statement. “We are incredibly proud of the work we’ve done and the message we’ve been privileged to be a part of. We look forward to giving our fantastic fans, the truly extraordinary Freddie Highmore, the rest of our talented actors (and friends), and the best crew in the business the series ending that you all deserve.

Added star/fellow EP Highmore: “Playing Dr. Shaun Murphy has been an immense privilege and one of the most remarkable and rewarding experiences of my life. I will always be grateful to David, Liz and Erin as well as the hugely talented — and lovely — cast, writers and crew who made this show possible. Caring deeply is what got us here. Thank you to Sony and ABC, and to everyone who has watched along at home.”

Then, channeling his inner Dr. Murphy, he concluded, “With love from Vancouver… tequila, stat!”

I don’t get the ax falling on this one. Last season they had the most episodes for one season!!! The very next season it gets cancelled….??? The Resident was another one i didn’t get being cancelled. Both are/were quality shoes. & Grey’s keeps going & going & going & going. I get the ratings difference but the cast on Grey’s has GOT to be more expensive than the casts of the Resident & Good Doctor. I am LOVING the new cast additions to the Good Doctor this season!!

It may have to do also with the actors wanting to do other things workwise or spend more time with their families. The Good Doctor is the only network drama I watch but I’m glad they had time to prepare for a final season (even if it’s shorter).

I will really miss this show. i have fallen in love with Freddie as he reminds me of my grandson that actually has autism and he looks exactly like Freddie so this show holds a special place in my heart. I hope through this comment that I will be notified of Freddie’s next endeavor. i would love to follow him. He’s stolen my heart. He’s a wonderful actor…

If you haven’t seen Freddie’s awesome work in Bates Motel, I HIGHLY recommend it. Good Doctor will be missed.

Most network shows sign their stars to six or seven year contracts, where the studios have options to keep the actors season to season if the show is renewed rather than a guarantee. Regular cast members who join after the shows start or who start out on a recurring basis usually have shorter contracts. Therefore, the networks and studios need to decide whether it is profitable or not to continue shows after six or seven seasons with the actors on new, more expensive contracts. It’s a no-brainer for very profitable shows like Grey’s, Big Bang Theory, SVU, and the OneChicago franchise, but a lot of shows are more difficult choices. My guess is that David Shore (the developer/executive producer), Sony (the producing studio where Shore is based), and Disney decided that The Good Doctor would have been too expensive to continue another season profitably.

There’s the answer. It’s made by Sony which means ABC has to buy the episodes whether most of the shows there are made “in house” by Disney owned studios like ABC studios or 20thcenturyFox.

You don’t understand the concept of ratings and costs? It’s no longer profitable, much like the Resident last year (which only got a shortened season for this very reason). It costs too much and doesn’t produce enough revenue through advertising and streaming deals and internation sales.

This was the only series I looked forward to watching every week. I absolutely loved all the actors and the story lines. I’m sad that it’s being canceled. Freddie stole my heart as a little boy in movies years ago. His acting as a doctor with autism was remarkable. Thank you for shedding a light on autism, and making people aware of things that autistic people can do. Thank you all!

You are posting the same as I feel too. So loved this show. So sad.

Breaks my heart to see you guys go. It always feels like you are part of our family. Good luck in whatever direction life takes you next. Love you all!

Love, love, love, this show.. Can’t believe it’s going off!!!!! Don’t understand if it’s sp popular why take it off? All the characters arre fabulous, even the new one that have came aboard. Freddie is the best he makes the show, but of course they all make the show! The writers are so awesome such terrific writers, their great. Everything is so real. I worked in surgery an everything seem so real. Please bring it back !!!! My favorite show on tv!! Love all of you guys, a great job to all of you for working so hard to make it so real. ❤️ J. V.S.

It isn’t popular anymore.

Enjoyed the show and hope to see Freddie Highmore again soon . As a retired RN and with autism in the family he was great

I will definitely miss this show. I looked forward to watching Shaun and the Bonaventure team every week. I hope to see the the actors and actresses in other shows. Glad Freddie showed autism cannot stop you from achieving your dreams.

Love the show, haven’t missed any shows. I will miss the the show.

Most enjoyable series ever, Freddie fantastic so real

This one makes me sad. I’ve watched from the beginning, and it’s one of the few shows I watch consistently. I’ll miss it.

I love the show, every single cast member. I have watched it from the start and will be sad to see it end.

One of, if not THE most, best shows on TV! I will greatly miss this! Fair winds to all! And thank you!

I love this show and will miss it terribly. So sad. Thanks to all the cast and crew for a fabulous run

Sure going to miss this show watch it every week an even the reruns.Love all the people on there.Who ever are the ones taking this off doesn’t know what is good. Miss all of you guys already.God Bkess each an every 🙏🏼🙏🏼💗

I have autistic grandson..dr Murphy warms my heart..will miss program very very much

I have never missed a single episode. I will truly miss this so.

I really wish this show wasn’t ending. I’ve one from day 1 and I’ll miss it so much. This is one of the best shows on tv right now, so sad to see it end.

I have only just started watching The Good Doctor online channel 4. I was interested in the Autism side of the story because my young grandson is autistic and I have recently acquired an Autism Certificate following a college course. Your TV Series The Good Doctor is magnificent. How you manage to get so many different stories is beyond belief. Every actor Involved and every writer and crew member deserve a pat on the back for such an excellent series. Dr Shaun Murphy is brilliant. I just wish Channel 4 were showing the series on Freeview channel 4 because everyone will get to see it and become aware of Autism which effects millions in so many different ways. Also reception on Channel 4 online is poor.

Have loved the show since season one. Great acting. Will definitely miss it.

I NEVER leave a comment, but this show hit home with me. I can’t believe it’s ending.best show on TV.

I guess I’ll stick with re-runs, or see re-runs of “House”

need a season 8 love this show will be missed farewell a bless all actors

Best show ever, except for the homo scenes, mute it.The Best to all, thank you Freddie, you are the best.

This one hurts. I haven’t missed an episode and as someone who watches very little network tv, I’m really going to miss it. Freddie Highmore is an incredible actor and showed what someone on the spectrum can accomplish and that it can be their super power. I hope the show educated people on a lot of levels. I thank each and every person involved and wish them my very best for the future.❤

And it’s still a crime that he or David spader never one for best actor in a lead drama and again highmore is one of the few that moved from child to adult actor and has never had any problems

Love this show and cast! Going to miss you guys❤️

I will truly miss one of the best shows on TV! Sending best wishes to everyone involved especially Freddy aka Dr. SHAWN MURPHY!♥️

ABC's hit medical drama The Good Doctor is returning for season 7.

Freddie Highmore in The Good Doctor

After The Good Doctor season 6 wrapped things up, we knew it would be a wait for The Good Doctor season 7, but we didn't know it would be this long. But at long last, the wait is over, as The Good Doctor is returning to TV.

It comes a bit of sad news, as The Good Doctor season 7 marks the end for the medical drama, with these final batch of episodes leading up to the series finale.

Here's everything we know about The Good Doctor season 7.

The Good Doctor season 7 next episode

The Good Doctor has an all new episodes airing on Tuesday, April 10, on ABC.

The Good Doctor joins Will Trent season 2 and The Rookie season 6 on ABC's Tuesday night lineup, though neither of those shows are new on March 19.

For UK viewers interested in The Good Doctor , we don't have a release date for the show as of yet, but previous seasons are available on Disney Plus.

The Good Doctor season 7 cast

The Good Doctor is led by Freddie Highmore's performance as Dr. Shaun Murphy, but throughout its run it has been an ensemble series, focusing on the lives of many of the doctors that Shaun works with at the hospital.

So filling out the rest of the hospital staff are Richard Schiff's Dr. Glassman, Fiona Gublemann's Dr. Reznick, Will Yun Lee's Dr. Park, Christina Chang's Dr. Lim, Paige Spara's Lea, Bria Henderson's Dr. Allen, Noah Galvin's Dr. Wolke and Chuku Modu's Dr. Kalu, who returned after time away from the show in season 6, are going to round out the series regulars for The Good Doctor season 7.

Brandon Larracuente, who played Dr. Daniel Perez in The Good Doctor season 6, is not returning as a series regular for season 7, though Deadline reports he could still occasionally appear as a guest star. Larracuente fans will be happy to hear that the actor has already lined up a new TV show, On Call , which is going to stream on Prime Video .

It's also possible, but unconfirmed at this time, that other characters from throughout the show's run could return to help celebrate the final season.

The Good Doctor season 7 plot

The only hints as to where The Good Doctor season 7 is going to go with its plot is what we can infer from how the show ended its last season. In the season 6 finale we saw Danny (Brandon Larracuente) decide to leave the hospital and return to his family to focus on his sobriety; Dr. Reznick and Dr. Park decide to support each other in raising baby Eden; Dr. Harper resign over his relationship with a nurse and their goal to unionize; and Dr. Schiff and Shaun's relationship is n a fragile position, even after Shaun and Lea welcome their baby son into the world.

Beyond those more overarching storylines, expect the show to continue its medical-case-of-the-week format.

A key thing to note, because of the late start for The Good Doctor season 7 it is expected that the show will have a shortened season, though an official episode count was not shared by ABC.

The Good Doctor season 7 trailer

Check out this teaser for The Good Doctor season 7, which is being dubbed "the farewell season":

ABC has also released another trailer that focuses on Sean's new role as a dad and how that might impact him as a doctor.

The Good Doctor Season 7 BTS Photos Tease Upcoming Series Finale

A s ABC's The Good Doctor gears up for its imminent end, the cast of the hit medical drama shares behind-the-scenes images from the series finale as they all prepare to say goodbye to San Jose St. Bonaventure Hospital.

The images shared on social media (via TVLine ) take fans behind the scenes of the beloved ABC series. Dr. Audrey Lim actress Christina Chang recently shared a photo of her from her first day on set during the first season.

"On the eve of our final day of filming, flooded with so many memories. Thankful for The Good Cast + The Good Crew + The Good Fans," the actress wrote.

The outlet also shared BTS photos courtesy of series stars Chang, Paige Spara (Lea Dilallo) and Fiona Gubelmann (Dr. Morgan Reznick). You can check out the images down below:

Why is The Good Doctor ending with Season 7?

Despite its impressive viewership performance throughout the past seasons, the seventh season - which premiered on February 20 - will be the show's last, as the creatives behind the hit series believe it's the right time to end the story.

In a previous interview with Collider , series creator David Shore said that they have been "lucky enough to plan the ending [they] want to do," adding, "This has been a weird year. Only doing 10 episodes is unfortunate. But being able to go out on your own terms is a blessing."

Shore continued, "Years ago when I was doing another show, someone asked, ‘Do you know how the show is going to end?' [He said] Yes, I know exactly how this show will end. One day I will get a call from the network."

The synopsis for The Good Doctor reads: "Shaun Murphy (Freddie Highmore), a young surgeon with autism and savant syndrome, relocates from a quiet country life to join a prestigious hospital's surgical unit. How to Give an Excellent Medical Presentation

In medicine, we are constantly learning from each other. Professors stand in front of lecture halls to teach the fundamental knowledge needed to pass board exams and to treat our patients. Outside of the classroom, medical students, researchers, and physicians attend conferences to communicate ideas and update their colleagues with oral and poster presentations. In the clinic, students and resident physicians relay pertinent patient information to the physician in charge. Eventually, you will find yourself in front of an audience listening to your talk or an attending grading your clinical presentation. First, I will discuss what it takes to make an excellent presentation.  I will then finish this topic by providing guidelines for perfecting different types of presentations.

Critical Elements of an Excellent Presentation

 do some research.

Your audience will consider you an expert on the information you deliver. It is your job to achieve the expected level of comprehension of the topic. After choosing a topic, gather enough background information from diverse but appropriate sources (e.g., journals articles, relevant chapters in textbooks, personal discussion with subject matter experts, online videos).  Your research should provide you with a thorough understanding of the topic and a list of the important facts supporting your take-home message . Any gaps in your knowledge will become evident during your presentation. The goal is to develop confidence in your understanding of the topic and ability to share what you know.

Know Your Audience

Before putting your presentation together, take a moment to assess the baseline understanding of your expected audience . Ultimately your audience should walk away having learned something new. Try to figure out their collective interest, reasons for attending, and prior experience with the topic. Knowing your audience will allow you to focus on information that will keep them engaged and interested. For example, premed students have a different understanding of medical topics than medical students.  A presentation on the same subject should be different for both groups. If your listeners have different levels of expertise, take a moment to explain the fundamental concept, then build up the language and complexity to allow everyone to benefit from the information shared. Your audience is the reason why you are presenting.

Tell a Story

The human brain is wired to remember stories , especially if presented logically. A presentation is about the information shared, but it should also include the presenters’ passion, excitement, and personal style. All topics can be formatted to include characters, a description of the setting, plot, conflict, and a resolution. The story should allow the audience to take a journey with you. The hardest part is identifying the start and endpoint of your story and which details are needed. Make every word count by checking if it adds value to your narrative. Consider using metaphors, real examples, and descriptions that give life to your words .

Practicing your presentation is a vital step in developing an excellent presentation. You can memorize a script. However, memorization can reduce your connection with the audience. But in certain situations, scripts are quick and effective means of communicating important facts. Another approach is drafting bullet points of the main ideas and practicing the natural flow of information . This method allows your personality to shine on stage. To become comfortable speaking, start by practicing on your own . You can also record yourself with a cellphone or tablet and review the recording to evaluate your performance. Next, find a small group to present in front of and ask for their honest assessment . Eventually, your presentation will feel natural, and your stage presence will aid in communicating your main idea.

Q&A Session

Usually, your presentation does not end until after a question and answer session. Most presentations should include approximately five minutes in the end for the audience to ask questions . This part of the presentation allows you to clarify or further explain any part of your presentation. A question can also lead to expanding your presentation beyond what you originally planned to discuss . It is important for you to understand what is being asked and address the specific question directly. And if you do not have an answer, it is okay to admit that you do not know . Questions will force you to be creative and truly test your knowledge of the topic.

Different Types of Presentations

Presentations have many different forms, each with different goals; thus, each form requires a unique approach. In medicine, professors and clinician often provide students with lecture objectives and PowerPoint presentations that guide the students in their hour-long lecture. Conferences are a researcher’s platform to share their lab’s progress and conclusions. The last presentation I will go into is the clinical presentation a student typically performs for the physician in charge.

The main purpose of the lecture is to educate the attendees. We all have had great professors captivate our attention and other experiences that were a complete waste of time. But what makes some lectures better than others? The lecturer’s knowledge on the topic becomes obvious, and their stage presence confirms how comfortable they are with the topic.  If you are tasked with lecturing on a topic or a series, ensure that you have a solid understanding and address your learning objectives in the time allotted . The main concepts should be repeated multiple times throughout the lecture, followed by examples . Your PowerPoint slides should be limited to only main points and images that support your talking points. After difficult concepts are covered, ask questions to gauge your audience’s understanding . It is better to reemphasize a concept before building up to more complex learning objectives.

Research Presentation

Attending a conference is exciting, especially if you are representing your lab with an oral presentation.  It is an opportunity to share your research story, from the point of identifying a question to the process of reaching a conclusion. Realize your audience will include Primary Investigators, post-docs, and Ph.D. students that are also experts in the field . Attempt to grab the audience’s attention from the beginning by providing them with a reason to care. Then continue to explain how your study relates to the published work . After building up the background, address how you arrived at your research question. The most exciting part of your presentation should be explaining your conclusions and the path you took to get there. Finish up strong by discussing the implications of your findings and how they will have an impact in the field . The natural flow of information will come with practice and a deep understanding of your research topic. Presenting as a student usually leads to networking with professors and clinicians that can help you progress in your career.

Patient Presentation

Medical students learn how to take a patient’s history and perform a physical exam, but it is more challenging to reason through your clinical findings and subsequently present to an attending . Your clinical presentation style will change depending on the environment, medical department, and supervising physician . Upon joining a medical team, discuss the expectations and preference with each physician . It may be a good idea to draft a script that can get you started on organizing your patient presentation. The success of your presentation is correlated to your knowledge of the basic sciences and ability to critically assess the patient’s history and physical exam; the more you learn and read, the easier decision making and producing a plan becomes. Another important element is practicing your presentation style until it comes out naturally . Take the time to listen to your peers and experienced colleagues; learn from their mistakes and strengths . After concluding your presentation, ask for feedback and practice implementing the suggestions. You will be the eyes and ears for the physicians in charge, perfecting your patient presentation will help get the care the patients need while making everyone’s job a little easier.

Final remarks

There are some basic steps to achieving an excellent presentation: know the topic well, understand who you’re presenting to, develop a memorable story, and practice until it comes out naturally. A career in medicine is very versatile; you can be at the forefront of the next generation of physicians sharing your experiences or updating the science community with your research conclusions. At the minimum, you will be presenting the patient in the clinic. Thus, presenting is a skill every physician must master.

‘The Good Doctor’ memes go viral, reigniting debate about autism portrayal

the good doctor presentation

The doctor’s voice rises each time he repeats the sentence, crescendoing into a scream by the eighth repetition.

“I am a surgeon!” Shaun Murphy yells at his chief of surgery, who had boxed him out of helping with a procedure.

The encounter, a scene from ABC’s “The Good Doctor,” went viral in some corners of the internet this week, with social media users mocking its intensity. Viewer reactions and the resulting memes reignited conversations about how the show, which just finished its sixth season, portrays its autistic protagonist.

Among experts and advocates for autistic people, opinions are mixed. Some said the character of Murphy, played by Freddie Highmore , is depicted as an unfortunate assemblage of stereotypical behaviors, rather than as a full human. Others felt the protagonist fairly represents some autistic adults but offers no insight into the experiences of many others. Several called on ABC to employ more autistic screenwriters to make the show more authentic.

The stakes are high: A 2019 study found that watching one episode of “The Good Doctor” resulted in more accurate knowledge of autism than a college lecture on the subject. The show averaged more than 7 million viewers in the 2021-2022 season, ranking 27th among network TV series.

Mary Doherty, founder of Autistic Doctors International, said the show’s significant reach means it has a responsibility to demonstrate to neurotypical people that autistic people can succeed in medicine.

“It’s just a sense of missed opportunity,” said Doherty, an anesthesiologist whose organization represents more than 700 autistic medical doctors. “Because that potential for good representation has just been lost, and it’s a shame.”

To Lydia Brown, senior adviser at Autistic Women & Nonbinary Network, Murphy is a “cardboard cutout of what people believe an autistic person should be like” — with his existence as the show’s gimmick. As a result, Brown said, “The Good Doctor” reinforces false stereotypes that autistic people can’t form meaningful relationships, understand boundaries or treat others respectfully.

In one scene, a convenience-store robber asks Murphy to show his hands and then to relinquish his wallet. Murphy responds that he can’t because the wallet is in his pocket and “you can’t see my hands” if he reaches for it. Unnerved, the robber fires a shot that injures someone.

That literality is stereotypical, Brown said. While they said some autistic people may not understand what’s happening during a robbery, most have learned to be hyper-attuned to the dynamics around them for their own safety.

In Brown’s view, characters that are coded as autistic without that fact being explicitly stated — such as Chidi Anagonye on “The Good Place” or Gregory House on “House” — tend to be truer to life.

“To humanize a character, whether or not you explicitly label them as autistic, is to think, ‘Why do they act the way they do?’” Brown said.

Lawrence Fung, director of the Stanford Neurodiversity Project, expressed appreciation for the show’s depiction of an autistic person contributing positively to society and said some scenes are reasonable representations of autism. Murphy becoming overwhelmed by the fluorescent light and noises in a hospital room might ring true for some autistic people, Fung said. But he added that the character embodies only one way autistic people might act.

“The real world is not having autistic people that are all like Shaun Murphy,” Fung said.

Work Advice: Autism acceptance at work starts in the mental space

Among the show’s strengths is its depiction of the discrimination that autistic health-care workers often experience, said Doherty, of Autistic Doctors International. In the pilot episode , a board votes not to hire Murphy because he’s autistic; the group later reverses its decision.

But the show creates the false impression that all autistic people are savants like Murphy, Doherty said, when only a small percentage of autistic people actually have that trait. She said it should portray how autistic people attempt to “mask” their autism to fit into predominantly neurotypical environments. Most are much better communicators than Murphy and don’t behave nearly as inappropriately, she said.

“It’s really important to show that autistic doctors are really effective,” Doherty said. “And the strengths that autistic doctors bring to medicine are really important.”

Another “Good Doctor” clip that’s gone viral this week shows Murphy as unable to understand the concept of transgender people. The portrayal is unrealistic given that in reality, many autistic people are transgender , said journalist Sara Luterman, who has written about her perspective on the show as an autistic person.

More broadly, she said, “The Good Doctor” promotes the harmful idea that autistic people have to be exceptional to be accepted. The show makes clear that Murphy works at the hospital because he’s a genius, even though much of his behavior is unprofessional, said Luterman, a reporter at the 19th who has covered neurodiversity.

Although Luterman felt fairly positively about the show when it first aired, she said she no longer considers it worth watching.

“Since then, there have been better shows that have better, fuller, more realistic shows of autistic people in them,” she said. “And I don’t feel like I have to dig for the good nuggets in imperfect representation anymore.”

My review of 'The Good Doctor' as an adult with autism

This blog is by Kerry Magro, an award-winning international motivational  speaker  and best-selling author who’s on the autism spectrum. A version of this blog originally appeared on Kerrymagro.com .

good doctor

Full disclosure: After only watching one episode, I have no idea what the future is for “ The Good Doctor “ (which premiered Sep. 25,2017 at 10/9C on ABC). What I can tell you: this show has all the makings of an ABC smash hit.

Let’s begin with the cast. Freddie Highmore (Bates Motel, Charlie and The Chocolate Factory) stars as Dr. Shaun Murphy, an up-and-coming surgeon who also happens to have autism and savant syndrome. This is a very difficult role for anyone to play given how broad the autism spectrum truly is. Some criticism has occurred as many TV productions and films try to address autism issues. There is no “one size fits all” in attempting to define characters on the spectrum. This list in recent years includes characters such as Walter Hill in Joyful Noise, Billy in the new Power Rangers Movie, Jane in Jane Wants a Boyfriend, and most recently in Sam Gardener, a high-functioning teen with autism in Netflix’s Atypical.

There seems to be an obsession with autism political correctness in some autism-related projects. Producers strive for realism in portraying these autistic characters with the danger of not clearly understanding the individuality of each person on the spectrum. It’s a razor’s edge. Trying to avoid producing “inspiration porn” but also making the programming meaningful to those in the autism community. Atypical, which received mostly positive reviews (77% rating from critics and 97% rating from audiences on Rotten Tomatoes) for example also received some criticism for not hiring an autism consultant who was on the spectrum to help bring a realistic portrayal of the role. To be fair, Atypical had a full-time consultant in the fabulous Michelle Dean along with the help from  Exceptional Minds , a computer animation studio and non-profit digital arts school for young adults on the autism spectrum. Exceptional Minds  worked on some shots for The Good Doctor  team and also had a role with Atypical.

The Good Doctor does a fine job of navigating this razor’s edge. Freddie does well in his debut, showing several characteristics that can accompany an autism diagnosis. These characteristics include things such as social awkwardness, lack of eye contact, playing with his hands during stressful situations, etc. That last one is still something I do to this day as an adult who is on the autism spectrum. Freddie’s take will resonate with many in the community. It will be interesting to see how his character evolves moving forward into the season.

What really stood out to me though was the discussion during one scene where they are deciding Dr. Murphy’s fate and how people with autism lack empathy. How can they be sympathetic to patients and their families? It was refreshing to see Dr. Murphy have the opportunity to show his ability to care for others when asked point blank “why do you want to be a surgeon?” based off a traumatic event in Shaun’s history. I had to pause the show because I was sobbing like a baby.

As for the script there are several plot lines that will intrigue audiences and the direction couldn’t be crisper from Seth Gordon along with the writing done by David Shore (the creator and Director of House).

While many in the autism community may tune in for Dr. Murphy, autism is only one component of the show that will draw viewers. Based on  statistics from the Department of Labor,  a majority of those with disabilities in the U.S. today are unemployed. Discussing the  hiring of someone with a disability  highlights its importance. There are other areas that come to mind including relationships in the workplace, safety and different types of ways people learn. Dr. Murphy for example thinks in pictures (as can be seen when he’s on screen when he’s visualizing the human body or trying to remember a definition of a specific word).

This show has staying power and I can only hope the creators of the show along with Sony and ABC will continue to include voices of those on the spectrum as the show continues.

Dr. Glassman, who first met Dr. Murphy at 14, said it best during a Board of Directors meeting when he said…

“Aren’t we judged by how we treat people? I don’t mean as doctors I mean as people. Especially those who don’t have the same advantages that we have. We hire Shaun and we give hope to those people with limitations that those limitations are not what they think they are. That they do have a shot. We hire Shaun and we make this hospital better for it.”

A quote I tell audiences when I travel the country speaking is that, “Autism can’t define me. I define autism.” Shaun and I are not defined by our diagnosis.

I hope that we can give this show a shot and if we do, like giving Dr. Murphy a shot at employment and something he enjoys, we will all be pleasantly surprised by the results.

6 Powerful Ways to Start a Presentation to Doctors

The beginning of your talk will set the tone for your allotted time.

Whatever you do during the first 30-60 seconds should succeed in captivating the audience securely enough for them to turn all of their attention to you for the duration of your presentation. Loosen them up, fascinate them, or make them curious from the very beginning.

Consider using one of the six presentation openers listed below if you would like to try something new.

1. Start with a personal story

Open up to your audience by illustrating how the subject at hand is personally important to you. When you start off with a personal tale of medicine, illness, cure, or perhaps gain and loss, you are inviting everyone present to identify with you. Suddenly you all become a part of the presentation. Rather than having to agree or disagree with the cold facts that you produce, they will actually be able to feel what you are saying once you make yourself seem more personable.

A colleague of mine was giving a similar presentation to another group of doctors just last month. He told me that the number one point the doctors were concerned about was xxxx.

2. Start with a story of a patient

Make your presentation entirely relevant by taking it directly to the case of a patient your medical device had treated. Deliver your story in a clear and intriguing way that lets doctors know that it is to be trusted and is not anecdotal. Before you present, make sure you establish the specific facts of the story so that you have a mental guideline to follow throughout your fluid talk. With your patient story you will start off by creating relevance and accountability for yourself and your message.

A doctor I met in the past told me of a patient who refused xxxxx equipment on the grounds that it was too uncomfortable.

3. Start with a statistic

Give doctors a reason to listen to the rest of your presentation. Rather than asking them to blindly trust you before you get to the proof of your facts, start off with that proof. Deliver a relevant statistic that illuminates the importance of your entire presentation. The data you offer will provide a black and white, irrefutable example of why the topic of your discussion matters to your listeners. Using a statistic also illustrates that you are knowledgeable in the area, giving just one more reason why what you are discussing is worth hearing.

Did you know that the xxxx industry has been growing at a rate of xx% per year?

4. Start with a video

Movies of your medical device or how your technology works are guaranteed to draw attention as long as they are good and well structured. Videos are extremely useful when your medical device is too small to present to a group of doctors, is used inside the patient’s body, or is not mobile and is too large to bring into the room. Another type of video you can use is a video testimonial of a colleague they know and respect.

5. Start with a silence

What can be more powerful than a silence when you are expecting a speech? That period of waiting can be intense as the listeners wait for what is coming next. When you are ready to begin your  business presentation , try surprising listeners by providing them with a single sentence, and then a moment of complete silence. Maintain complete composure during the pause so that the doctors do not fear that you have forgotten what you were saying, or perhaps that you are angry or waiting for anything in particular. If you wish, say a few more words only to be followed by yet another silent period. In less than a minute you will have taken complete ownership of the room as all attention has turned to you, waiting for what you have to say next.

6. Start with humor

Laughter is a fun way to draw people’s focus. If you are confident that you will make your listeners laugh, using humor is a strong way of opening a presentation to doctors. The first step however is knowing your audience. You must know what the doctors in front of you will find funny or amusing before you bust out your best joke-telling skills. Then make sure your joke is relevant to your topic as well. A joke is meant to loosen the audience and make them feel comfortable and open to what you are about to say. However, if you botch the joke, you will be in for a rough recovery over the next few minutes.

is “the good doctor” a good representation of asd, or does it sacrifice reality for drama.

Is “The Good Doctor” A Good Representation Of ASD?

As someone who is personally connected to someone with Autism Spectrum Disorder and has studied the disorder in various psychology course in college, I was a little skeptical when I saw the ad for a new medical show about a young man with ASD trying to become a surgical resident at San Jose St. Bonaventure Hospital. ASD is characterized by varying degrees of difficulties in social interaction, verbal and nonverbal communication, and repetitive behaviors.

I worried about how the actor would portray the symptoms of ASD and what the show’s overall view on ASD would appear to be. That previous January I had taken part in a college psychology course where we analyzed different movies and other pop culture sources and their either success or failure in portraying different mental disorders.

So, as I sat down to watch the first episode of the “The Good Doctor,” I was prepared to do as such.

Frankly, I was pleasantly surprised at how much I enjoyed it. Freddie Highmore does a phenomenal job in his characterization of Shaun Murphy, who has autism and savant syndrome, and his portrayal of Shaun’s struggles in this new environment of medical residency.

As someone who knows the symptoms and mannerism of someone with ASD like the back of my hand, I have very little complaints about how Highmore has been directed to perform these mannerisms.

While I find myself laughing at some of Shaun’s responses to social situations, I know the reality of those behaviors and can recognize the show's genuine presentation.

I think the show does well at breaking down and overcoming some of the stereotypes surrounding ASD, both through having a character like Shawn on a show and through having secondary characters that must discover themselves how to break down their own prejudices and see Shaun’s medical talents underneath his disorder.

It’s great that ASD is being represented once again, and in a more educated way, in pop culture compared to movies like “What’s Eating Gilbert Grape?” and “Rain Man.” I love the narrative that is being told in “The Good Doctor,” but I still yearn for a little more.

My brother has severe autism and is nonverbal. While watching the show, every week I hoped that they would bring on a character who would represent my brother.

I got my hopes up after the promo of episode seven, where Shaun meets someone with ASD for the first time, but was let down even though it was still an exceptional episode.

Although, the episode found itself back in my good graces when I learned that the actor who played the character of Liam has the disorder himself. The efforts that this show takes to further permeate their message of inclusion are worth applauding.

For now, I task myself with being the voice for my brother and will continue watching this unique take on a medical drama. The mid-season final definitely left us with a cliffhanger, so I look forward to seeing what’s next on the show.

Waitlisted for a college class here's what to do, dealing with the inevitable realities of college life..

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.

Don't freak out

This is a rule you should continue to follow no matter what you do in life, but is especially helpful in this situation.

Email the professor

Around this time, professors are getting flooded with requests from students wanting to get into full classes. This doesn't mean you shouldn't burden them with your email; it means they are expecting interested students to email them. Send a short, concise message telling them that you are interested in the class and ask if there would be any chance for you to get in.

Attend the first class

Often, the advice professors will give you when they reply to your email is to attend the first class. The first class isn't the most important class in terms of what will be taught. However, attending the first class means you are serious about taking the course and aren't going to give up on it.

Keep attending class

Every student is in the same position as you are. They registered for more classes than they want to take and are "shopping." For the first couple of weeks, you can drop or add classes as you please, which means that classes that were once full will have spaces. If you keep attending class and keep up with assignments, odds are that you will have priority. Professors give preference to people who need the class for a major and then from higher to lower class year (senior to freshman).

Have a backup plan

For two weeks, or until I find out whether I get into my waitlisted class, I will be attending more than the usual number of classes. This is so that if I don't get into my waitlisted class, I won't have a credit shortage and I won't have to fall back in my backup class. Chances are that enough people will drop the class, especially if it is very difficult like computer science, and you will have a chance. In popular classes like art and psychology, odds are you probably won't get in, so prepare for that.

Remember that everything works out at the end

Life is full of surprises. So what if you didn't get into the class you wanted? Your life obviously has something else in store for you. It's your job to make sure you make the best out of what you have.

Navigating the Talking Stage: 21 Essential Questions to Ask for Connection

It's mandatory to have these conversations..

Whether you met your new love interest online , through mutual friends, or another way entirely, you'll definitely want to know what you're getting into. I mean, really, what's the point in entering a relationship with someone if you don't know whether or not you're compatible on a very basic level?

Consider these 21 questions to ask in the talking stage when getting to know that new guy or girl you just started talking to:

1. What do you do for a living?

What someone does for a living can tell a lot about who they are and what they're interested in! Their career reveals a lot more about them than just where they spend their time to make some money.

2. What's your favorite color?

OK, I get it, this seems like something you would ask a Kindergarten class, but I feel like it's always good to know someone's favorite color . You could always send them that Snapchat featuring you in that cute shirt you have that just so happens to be in their favorite color!

3. Do you have any siblings?

This one is actually super important because it's totally true that people grow up with different roles and responsibilities based on where they fall in the order. You can tell a lot about someone just based on this seemingly simple question.

4. What's your favorite television show?

OK, maybe this isn't a super important question, but you have to know ASAP if you can quote Michael Scott or not. If not, he probably isn't the one. Sorry, girl.

5. When is your birthday?

You can then proceed to do the thing that every girl does without admitting it and see how compatible your zodiacs are.

6. What's your biggest goal in life?

If you're like me, you have big goals that you want to reach someday, and you want a man behind you who also has big goals and understands what it's like to chase after a dream. If his biggest goal is to see how quickly he can binge-watch " Grey's Anatomy " on Netflix , you may want to move on.

7. If you had three wishes granted to you by a genie, what would they be?

This is a go-to for an insight into their personality. Based on how they answer, you can tell if they're goofy, serious, or somewhere in between.

8. What's your favorite childhood memory?

For some, this may be a hard question if it involves a family member or friend who has since passed away . For others, it may revolve around a tradition that no longer happens. The answers to this question are almost endless!

9. If you could change one thing about your life, what would it be?

We all have parts of our lives and stories that we wish we could change. It's human nature to make mistakes. This question is a little bit more personal but can really build up the trust level.

10. Are you a cat or a dog person?

I mean, duh! If you're a dog person, and he is a cat person, it's not going to work out.

11. Do you believe in a religion or any sort of spiritual power?

Personally, I am a Christian, and as a result, I want to be with someone who shares those same values. I know some people will argue that this question is too much in the talking stage , but why go beyond the talking stage if your personal values will never line up?

12. If you could travel anywhere in the world, where would it be?

Even homebodies have a must visit place on their bucket list !

13. What is your ideal date night?

Hey, if you're going to go for it... go for it!

14. Who was/is your celebrity crush?

For me, it was hands-down Nick Jonas . This is always a fun question to ask!

15. What's a good way to cheer you up if you're having a bad day?

Let's be real, if you put a label on it, you're not going to see your significant other at their best 24/7.

16. Do you have any tattoos?

This can lead to some really good conversations, especially if they have a tattoo that has a lot of meaning to them!

17. Can you describe yourself in three words?

It's always interesting to see if how the person you're talking to views their personal traits lines ups with the vibes you're getting.

18. What makes you the most nervous in life?

This question can go multiple different directions, and it could also be a launching pad for other conversations.

19. What's the best gift you have ever received?

Admittedly, I have asked this question to friends as well, but it's neat to see what people value.

20. What do you do to relax/have fun?

Work hard, play hard, right?

21. What are your priorities at this phase of your life?

This is always interesting because no matter how compatible your personalities may be, if one of you wants to be serious and the other is looking for something casual, it's just not going to work.

Challah vs. Easter Bread: A Delicious Dilemma

Is there really such a difference in challah bread or easter bread.

Ever since I could remember, it was a treat to receive Easter Bread made by my grandmother. We would only have it once a year and the wait was excruciating. Now that my grandmother has gotten older, she has stopped baking a lot of her recipes that require a lot of hand usage--her traditional Italian baking means no machines. So for the past few years, I have missed enjoying my Easter Bread.

A few weeks ago, I was given a loaf of bread called Challah (pronounced like holla), and upon my first bite, I realized it tasted just like Easter Bread. It was so delicious that I just had to make some of my own, which I did.

The recipe is as follows:

Ingredients

2 tsp active dry or instant yeast 1 cup lukewarm water 4 to 4 1/2 cups all-purpose flour 1/2 cup white granulated sugar 2 tsp salt 2 large eggs 1 large egg yolk (reserve the white for the egg wash) 1/4 cup neutral-flavored vegetable oil

Instructions

  • Combine yeast and a pinch of sugar in small bowl with the water and stir until you see a frothy layer across the top.
  • Whisk together 4 cups of the flour, sugar, and salt in a large bowl.
  • Make a well in the center of the flour and add in eggs, egg yolk, and oil. Whisk these together to form a slurry, pulling in a little flour from the sides of the bowl.
  • Pour the yeast mixture over the egg slurry and mix until difficult to move.
  • Turn out the dough onto a floured work surface and knead by hand for about 10 minutes. If the dough seems very sticky, add flour a teaspoon at a time until it feels tacky, but no longer like bubblegum. The dough has finished kneading when it is soft, smooth, and holds a ball-shape.
  • Place the dough in an oiled bowl, cover with plastic wrap, and place somewhere warm. Let the dough rise 1 1/2 to 2 hours.
  • Separate the dough into four pieces. Roll each piece of dough into a long rope roughly 1-inch thick and 16 inches long.
  • Gather the ropes and squeeze them together at the very top. Braid the pieces in the pattern of over, under, and over again. Pinch the pieces together again at the bottom.
  • Line a baking sheet with parchment and lift the loaf on top. Sprinkle the loaf with a little flour and drape it with a clean dishcloth. Place the pan somewhere warm and away from drafts and let it rise until puffed and pillowy, about an hour.
  • Heat the oven to 350°F. Whisk the reserved egg white with a tablespoon of water and brush it all over the challah. Be sure to get in the cracks and down the sides of the loaf.
  • Slide the challah on its baking sheet into the oven and bake for 30 to 35 minutes, rotating the pan halfway through cooking. The challah is done when it is deeply browned.

I kept wondering how these two breads could be so similar in taste. So I decided to look up a recipe for Easter Bread to make a comparison. The two are almost exactly the same! These recipes are similar because they come from religious backgrounds. The Jewish Challah bread is based on kosher dietary laws. The Christian Easter Bread comes from the Jewish tradition but was modified over time because they did not follow kosher dietary laws.

A recipe for Easter bread is as follows:

2 tsp active dry or instant yeast 2/3 cup milk 2 1/2 cups all-purpose flour 1/4 cup white granulated sugar 2 tbs butter 2 large eggs 2 tbs melted butter 1 tsp salt

  • In a large bowl, combine 1 cup flour, sugar, salt, and yeast; stir well. Combine milk and butter in a small saucepan; heat until milk is warm and butter is softened but not melted.
  • Gradually add the milk and butter to the flour mixture; stirring constantly. Add two eggs and 1/2 cup flour; beat well. Add the remaining flour, 1/2 cup at a time, stirring well after each addition. When the dough has pulled together, turn it out onto a lightly floured surface and knead until smooth and elastic, about 8 minutes.
  • Lightly oil a large bowl, place the dough in the bowl and turn to coat with oil. Cover with a damp cloth and let rise in a warm place until doubled in volume, about 1 hour.
  • Deflate the dough and turn it out onto a lightly floured surface. Divide the dough into two equal size rounds; cover and let rest for 10 minutes. Roll each round into a long roll about 36 inches long and 1 1/2 inches thick. Using the two long pieces of dough, form a loosely braided ring, leaving spaces for the five colored eggs. Seal the ends of the ring together and use your fingers to slide the eggs between the braids of dough.
  • Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Place loaf on a buttered baking sheet and cover loosely with a damp towel. Place loaf in a warm place and let rise until doubled in bulk, about 45 minutes. Brush risen loaf with melted butter.
  • Bake in the preheated oven until golden brown, about 30 minutes.

Both of these recipes are really easy to make. While you might need to have a day set aside for this activity, you can do things while the dough is rising or in the oven. After only a few hours, you have a delicious loaf of bread that you made from scratch, so the time and effort is really worth it!

Unlocking Lake People's Secrets: 15 Must-Knows!

There's no other place you'd rather be in the summer..

The people that spend their summers at the lake are a unique group of people.

Whether you grew up going to the lake , have only recently started going, or have only been once or twice, you know it takes a certain kind of person to be a lake person. To the long-time lake people, the lake holds a special place in your heart , no matter how dirty the water may look.

Every year when summer rolls back around, you can't wait to fire up the boat and get back out there. Here is a list of things you can probably identify with as a fellow lake-goer.

A bad day at the lake is still better than a good day not at the lake.

It's your place of escape, where you can leave everything else behind and just enjoy the beautiful summer day. No matter what kind of week you had, being able to come and relax without having to worry about anything else is the best therapy there is. After all, there's nothing better than a day of hanging out in the hot sun, telling old funny stories and listening to your favorite music.

You know the best beaches and coves to go to.

Whether you want to just hang out and float or go walk around on a beach, you know the best spots. These often have to be based on the people you're with, given that some "party coves" can get a little too crazy for little kids on board. I still have vivid memories from when I was six that scared me when I saw the things drunk girls would do for beads.

You have no patience for the guy who can't back his trailer into the water right.

When there's a long line of trucks waiting to dump their boats in the water, there's always that one clueless guy who can't get it right, and takes 5 attempts and holds up the line. No one likes that guy. One time my dad got so fed up with a guy who was taking too long that he actually got out of the car and asked this guy if he could just do it for him. So he got into the guy's car, threw it in reverse, and got it backed in on the first try. True story.

Doing the friendly wave to every boat you pass.

Similar to the "jeep wave," almost everyone waves to other boats passing by. It's just what you do, and is seen as a normal thing by everyone.

The cooler is always packed, mostly with beer.

Alcohol seems to be a big part of the lake experience, but other drinks are squeezed into the room remaining in the cooler for the kids, not to mention the wide assortment of chips and other foods in the snack bag.

Giving the idiot who goes 30 in a "No Wake Zone" a piece of your mind.

There's nothing worse than floating in the water, all settled in and minding your business, when some idiot barrels through. Now your anchor is loose, and you're left jostled by the waves when it was nice and perfectly still before. This annoyance is typically answered by someone yelling some choice words to them that are probably accompanied by a middle finger in the air.

You have no problem with peeing in the water.

It's the lake, and some social expectations are a little different here, if not lowered quite a bit. When you have to go, you just go, and it's no big deal to anyone because they do it too.

You know the frustration of getting your anchor stuck.

The number of anchors you go through as a boat owner is likely a number that can be counted on two hands. Every once in a while, it gets stuck on something on the bottom of the lake, and the only way to fix the problem is to cut the rope, and you have to replace it.

Watching in awe at the bigger, better boats that pass by.

If you're the typical lake-goer, you likely might have an average-sized boat that you're perfectly happy with. However, that doesn't mean you don't stop and stare at the fast boats that loudly speed by, or at the obnoxiously huge yachts that pass.

Knowing any swimsuit that you own with white in it is best left for the pool or the ocean.

You've learned this the hard way, coming back from a day in the water and seeing the flowers on your bathing suit that were once white, are now a nice brownish hue.

The momentary fear for your life as you get launched from the tube.

If the driver knows how to give you a good ride, or just wants to specifically throw you off, you know you're done when you're speeding up and heading straight for a big wave. Suddenly you're airborne, knowing you're about to completely wipe out, and you eat pure wake. Then you get back on and do it all again.

You're able to go to the restaurants by the water wearing minimal clothing.

One of the many nice things about the life at the lake is that everybody cares about everything a little less. Rolling up to the place wearing only your swimsuit, a cover-up, and flip flops, you fit right in. After a long day when you're sunburned, a little buzzed, and hungry, you're served without any hesitation.

Having unexpected problems with your boat.

Every once in a while you're hit with technical difficulties, no matter what type of watercraft you have. This is one of the most annoying setbacks when you're looking forward to just having a carefree day on the water, but it's bound to happen. This is just one of the joys that come along with being a boat owner.

Having a name for your boat unique to you and your life.

One of the many interesting things that make up the lake culture is the fact that many people name their boats. They can range from basic to funny, but they are unique to each and every owner, and often have interesting and clever meanings behind them.

There's no better place you'd rather be in the summer.

Summer is your all-time favorite season, mostly because it's spent at the lake. Whether you're floating in the cool water under the sun, or taking a boat ride as the sun sets, you don't have a care in the world at that moment . The people that don't understand have probably never experienced it, but it's what keeps you coming back every year.

Top 10 Reasons My School Rocks!

Why i chose a small school over a big university..

I was asked so many times why I wanted to go to a small school when a big university is so much better. Don't get me wrong, I'm sure a big university is great but I absolutely love going to a small school. I know that I miss out on big sporting events and having people actually know where it is. I can't even count how many times I've been asked where it is and I know they won't know so I just say "somewhere in the middle of Wisconsin ." But, I get to know most people at my school and I know my professors very well. Not to mention, being able to walk to the other side of campus in 5 minutes at a casual walking pace. I am so happy I made the decision to go to school where I did. I love my school and these are just a few reasons why.

1. My school is incredibly unique.

There are so many different kinds of people that each bring something really special to contribute to the school which makes it so unique.

2. I am not just a number at my school.

I am a student that my professors know about and I like knowing that my professors can watch my progress.

3. I feel like I am contributing something to the community.

I like feeling like I can make a difference on my campus.

4. I really do feel like it is my home away from home.

It isn't just my school. It is absolutely my home away from home. I feel so comfortable there and it was as hard of an adjustment as I had thought it would be.

5. My professors know me and I feel that I can easily communicate with them.

I feel like they will do anything to help students succeed. I can always go to my professors. I like knowing that I have someone looking out for me.

6. The incredible people I've met

The people I have met at my school, even after my first year, have made such a huge impact on me. I know that these are people that I will stay friends with long after college is done.

7. Opportunities

My school offers so many different opportunities to get involved in things around campus. Even writing for the Odyssey was an opportunity offered to me by my school and I decided to challenge myself by writing an article. Turns out, I really enjoy writing. I might not have had this opportunity at a bigger school.

8. Students want to learn

I feel as though I am not just learning inside the classroom at my school. I am learning outside the classroom to from my fellow classmates who want to engage about the things we have learned.

9. Ability to join a sorority and have a house full of people I know I can talk to anytime I need to

I wasn't sure if being in a sorority was something I was interested in but when I met the amazing people in the sorority and how inclusive it was, I knew that it was going to be a good thing for me. The people I've met in my sorority have been so amazing.

10. I have figured out how I learn best because my school offers so many different ways of learning.

Because of the smaller class sizes, there is more flexibility in the way the class is taught. This was helpful because I was able to try out different ways of learning and figure out which way I learn best.
