United States , country in North America , a federal republic of 50 states. Besides the 48 conterminous states that occupy the middle latitudes of the continent , the United States includes the state of Alaska , at the northwestern extreme of North America, and the island state of Hawaii , in the mid- Pacific Ocean . The conterminous states are bounded on the north by Canada , on the east by the Atlantic Ocean , on the south by the Gulf of Mexico and Mexico , and on the west by the Pacific Ocean. The United States is the fourth largest country in the world in area (after Russia , Canada, and China ). The national capital is Washington , which is coextensive with the District of Columbia , the federal capital region created in 1790.
The major characteristic of the United States is probably its great variety. Its physical environment ranges from the Arctic to the subtropical, from the moist rain forest to the arid desert, from the rugged mountain peak to the flat prairie . Although the total population of the United States is large by world standards, its overall population density is relatively low. The country embraces some of the world’s largest urban concentrations as well as some of the most extensive areas that are almost devoid of habitation.
The United States contains a highly diverse population. Unlike a country such as China that largely incorporated indigenous peoples, the United States has a diversity that to a great degree has come from an immense and sustained global immigration. Probably no other country has a wider range of racial, ethnic, and cultural types than does the United States. In addition to the presence of surviving Native Americans (including American Indians, Aleuts , and Eskimos ) and the descendants of Africans taken as enslaved persons to the New World, the national character has been enriched, tested, and constantly redefined by the tens of millions of immigrants who by and large have come to America hoping for greater social, political, and economic opportunities than they had in the places they left. (It should be noted that although the terms “America” and “Americans” are often used as synonyms for the United States and its citizens, respectively, they are also used in a broader sense for North, South, and Central America collectively and their citizens.)
The United States is the world’s greatest economic power, measured in terms of gross domestic product (GDP). The nation’s wealth is partly a reflection of its rich natural resources and its enormous agricultural output, but it owes more to the country’s highly developed industry. Despite its relative economic self-sufficiency in many areas, the United States is the most important single factor in world trade by virtue of the sheer size of its economy. Its exports and imports represent major proportions of the world total. The United States also impinges on the global economy as a source of and as a destination for investment capital. The country continues to sustain an economic life that is more diversified than any other on Earth, providing the majority of its people with one of the world’s highest standards of living.
The United States is relatively young by world standards, being less than 250 years old; it achieved its current size only in the mid-20th century. America was the first of the European colonies to separate successfully from its motherland, and it was the first nation to be established on the premise that sovereignty rests with its citizens and not with the government. In its first century and a half, the country was mainly preoccupied with its own territorial expansion and economic growth and with social debates that ultimately led to civil war and a healing period that is still not complete. In the 20th century the United States emerged as a world power, and since World War II it has been one of the preeminent powers. It has not accepted this mantle easily nor always carried it willingly; the principles and ideals of its founders have been tested by the pressures and exigencies of its dominant status. The United States still offers its residents opportunities for unparalleled personal advancement and wealth. However, the depletion of its resources, the contamination of its environment, and the continuing social and economic inequality that perpetuates areas of poverty and blight all threaten the fabric of the country.
The District of Columbia is discussed in the article Washington . For discussion of other major U.S. cities, see the articles Boston , Chicago , Los Angeles , New Orleans , New York City , Philadelphia , and San Francisco . Political units in association with the United States include Puerto Rico, discussed in the article Puerto Rico , and several Pacific islands, discussed in Guam , Northern Mariana Islands , and American Samoa .
The two great sets of elements that mold the physical environment of the United States are, first, the geologic, which determines the main patterns of landforms, drainage, and mineral resources and influences soils to a lesser degree, and, second, the atmospheric, which dictates not only climate and weather but also in large part the distribution of soils, plants, and animals. Although these elements are not entirely independent of one another, each produces on a map patterns that are so profoundly different that essentially they remain two separate geographies. (Since this article covers only the conterminous United States, see also the articles Alaska and Hawaii .)
The center of the conterminous United States is a great sprawling interior lowland, reaching from the ancient shield of central Canada on the north to the Gulf of Mexico on the south. To east and west this lowland rises, first gradually and then abruptly, to mountain ranges that divide it from the sea on both sides. The two mountain systems differ drastically. The Appalachian Mountains on the east are low, almost unbroken, and in the main set well back from the Atlantic . From New York to the Mexican border stretches the low Coastal Plain , which faces the ocean along a swampy, convoluted coast. The gently sloping surface of the plain extends out beneath the sea, where it forms the continental shelf , which, although submerged beneath shallow ocean water, is geologically identical to the Coastal Plain. Southward the plain grows wider, swinging westward in Georgia and Alabama to truncate the Appalachians along their southern extremity and separate the interior lowland from the Gulf.
West of the Central Lowland is the mighty Cordillera, part of a global mountain system that rings the Pacific basin. The Cordillera encompasses fully one-third of the United States, with an internal variety commensurate with its size. At its eastern margin lie the Rocky Mountains, a high, diverse, and discontinuous chain that stretches all the way from New Mexico to the Canadian border. The Cordillera’s western edge is a Pacific coastal chain of rugged mountains and inland valleys, the whole rising spectacularly from the sea without benefit of a coastal plain. Pent between the Rockies and the Pacific chain is a vast intermontane complex of basins, plateaus, and isolated ranges so large and remarkable that they merit recognition as a region separate from the Cordillera itself.
These regions—the Interior Lowlands and their upland fringes, the Appalachian Mountain system, the Atlantic Plain, the Western Cordillera , and the Western Intermontane Region—are so various that they require further division into 24 major subregions, or provinces.
Andrew Jackson is supposed to have remarked that the United States begins at the Alleghenies , implying that only west of the mountains, in the isolation and freedom of the great Interior Lowlands, could people finally escape Old World influences. Whether or not the lowlands constitute the country’s cultural core is debatable, but there can be no doubt that they comprise its geologic core and in many ways its geographic core as well.
This enormous region rests upon an ancient, much-eroded platform of complex crystalline rocks that have for the most part lain undisturbed by major orogenic (mountain-building) activity for more than 600,000,000 years. Over much of central Canada, these Precambrian rocks are exposed at the surface and form the continent’s single largest topographical region, the formidable and ice-scoured Canadian Shield .
In the United States most of the crystalline platform is concealed under a deep blanket of sedimentary rocks. In the far north, however, the naked Canadian Shield extends into the United States far enough to form two small but distinctive landform regions: the rugged and occasionally spectacular Adirondack Mountains of northern New York and the more-subdued and austere Superior Upland of northern Minnesota , Wisconsin , and Michigan . As in the rest of the shield, glaciers have stripped soils away, strewn the surface with boulders and other debris, and obliterated preglacial drainage systems. Most attempts at farming in these areas have been abandoned, but the combination of a comparative wilderness in a northern climate, clear lakes, and white-water streams has fostered the development of both regions as year-round outdoor recreation areas.
Mineral wealth in the Superior Upland is legendary. Iron lies near the surface and close to the deepwater ports of the upper Great Lakes . Iron is mined both north and south of Lake Superior , but best known are the colossal deposits of Minnesota’s Mesabi Range , for more than a century one of the world’s richest and a vital element in America’s rise to industrial power. In spite of depletion, the Minnesota and Michigan mines still yield a major proportion of the country’s iron and a significant percentage of the world’s supply.
South of the Adirondack Mountains and the Superior Upland lies the boundary between crystalline and sedimentary rocks; abruptly, everything is different. The core of this sedimentary region—the heartland of the United States—is the great Central Lowland, which stretches for 1,500 miles (2,400 kilometers) from New York to central Texas and north another 1,000 miles to the Canadian province of Saskatchewan . To some, the landscape may seem dull, for heights of more than 2,000 feet (600 meters) are unusual, and truly rough terrain is almost lacking. Landscapes are varied, however, largely as the result of glaciation that directly or indirectly affected most of the subregion. North of the Missouri – Ohio river line, the advance and readvance of continental ice left an intricate mosaic of boulders, sand, gravel, silt, and clay and a complex pattern of lakes and drainage channels, some abandoned, some still in use. The southern part of the Central Lowland is quite different, covered mostly with loess (wind-deposited silt) that further subdued the already low relief surface. Elsewhere, especially near major rivers, postglacial streams carved the loess into rounded hills, and visitors have aptly compared their billowing shapes to the waves of the sea. Above all, the loess produces soil of extraordinary fertility . As the Mesabi iron was a major source of America’s industrial wealth, its agricultural prosperity has been rooted in Midwestern loess.
The Central Lowland resembles a vast saucer, rising gradually to higher lands on all sides. Southward and eastward, the land rises gradually to three major plateaus. Beyond the reach of glaciation to the south, the sedimentary rocks have been raised into two broad upwarps, separated from one another by the great valley of the Mississippi River . The Ozark Plateau lies west of the river and occupies most of southern Missouri and northern Arkansas ; on the east the Interior Low Plateaus dominate central Kentucky and Tennessee . Except for two nearly circular patches of rich limestone country—the Nashville Basin of Tennessee and the Kentucky Bluegrass region —most of both plateau regions consists of sandstone uplands, intricately dissected by streams. Local relief runs to several hundreds of feet in most places, and visitors to the region must travel winding roads along narrow stream valleys. The soils there are poor, and mineral resources are scanty.
Eastward from the Central Lowland the Appalachian Plateau —a narrow band of dissected uplands that strongly resembles the Ozark Plateau and Interior Low Plateaus in steep slopes, wretched soils, and endemic poverty—forms a transition between the interior plains and the Appalachian Mountains. Usually, however, the Appalachian Plateau is considered a subregion of the Appalachian Mountains, partly on grounds of location, partly because of geologic structure. Unlike the other plateaus, where rocks are warped upward, the rocks there form an elongated basin, wherein bituminous coal has been preserved from erosion. This Appalachian coal , like the Mesabi iron that it complements in U.S. industry, is extraordinary. Extensive, thick, and close to the surface, it has stoked the furnaces of northeastern steel mills for decades and helps explain the huge concentration of heavy industry along the lower Great Lakes.
The western flanks of the Interior Lowlands are the Great Plains , a territory of awesome bulk that spans the full distance between Canada and Mexico in a swath nearly 500 miles (800 km) wide. The Great Plains were built by successive layers of poorly cemented sand, silt, and gravel—debris laid down by parallel east-flowing streams from the Rocky Mountains . Seen from the east, the surface of the Great Plains rises inexorably from about 2,000 feet (600 meters) near Omaha , Nebraska , to more than 6,000 feet (1,825 meters) at Cheyenne , Wyoming , but the climb is so gradual that popular legend holds the Great Plains to be flat. True flatness is rare, although the High Plains of western Texas , Oklahoma , Kansas , and eastern Colorado come close. More commonly, the land is broadly rolling, and parts of the northern plains are sharply dissected into badlands.
The main mineral wealth of the Interior Lowlands derives from fossil fuels. Coal occurs in structural basins protected from erosion—high-quality bituminous in the Appalachian, Illinois , and western Kentucky basins; and subbituminous and lignite in the eastern and northwestern Great Plains. Petroleum and natural gas have been found in nearly every state between the Appalachians and the Rockies, but the Midcontinent Fields of western Texas and the Texas Panhandle, Oklahoma, and Kansas surpass all others. Aside from small deposits of lead and zinc , metallic minerals are of little importance.

The United States of America(The USA)
General information The USA is a federation of fifty states. Forty eight are on the mainland and there is Alaska on the north west of Canada and the Hawaiian islands in the Pacific Ocean. The capital city is Washington DC.
Geography of the USA The United States of America, in central North America, is the fourth largest country in the world. It is 2,575 kilometres from north to south and 4,500 kilometres from east to west. Because the country is so big, every state has different laws and traditions and there are four different time zones.
The USA borders Canada in the north and Mexico in the south and it is a country of great scenic and climatic contrast. There is an artic climate in Alaska and a subtropical climate in Florida.
The stars and stripes The flag of the United States of America is called The Stars and Stripes. The thirteen stripes represent the thirteen original colonies and the fifty stars the actual states. The colours of the flag are blue for justice, red for courage and white for innocence.
American English is the first language and the second language is Spanish. The American currency is the American Dollar.
The national anthem The national anthem of the United States of America is the Star-splangged banner. The lyrics come from "Defence of Fort McHenry",a poem written in 1814 by the 35-year-old amateur poet Francis Scott key.

EMIRATES TEAM NEW ZEALAND MAKE HISTORY TO WIN THE LOUIS VUITTON 37th AMERICA’S CUP
Emirates Team New Zealand concluded a historic chapter, winning the Louis Vuitton 37th America’s Cup after an epic final showdown in Barcelona against the Challenger of Record, INEOS Britannia, in a single race that ebbed and flowed from the outset but ultimately saw the Kiwis secure victory by 37 seconds.
On a day where the Barcelona waterfront was treated to the spectacle of a record breaking 350 Patí Catala catamarans on the racecourse before racing , the British came out looking for a pre-start fight. In a shifting breeze of 7-11 knots on flat water, they entered on starboard before gybing immediately onto the Kiwi line to trail them out to the far-right boundary of the box and the race was on.
Emirates Team New Zealand were first to gybe down the boundary but found INEOS Britannia, who had gybed inside, right on their bow. On the lead back to the line, the New Zealand crew tried to wriggle free with two tacks, but these were matched deftly by the British.
As the set-up began for the line, INEOS Britannia sat to leeward, attempting to force a shutout at the right-hand end of the line. But in the final seconds, both boats had time to kill and bore away down the line, allowing Emirates Team New Zealand to assume the windward position and tack off immediately for the right boundary. On the tack back, the Kiwis had the right-of-way advantage and crossed before making a decision that was crucial to the race’s outcome.
Ignoring the chance to tack immediately and cover the British—who were headed to the right-hand boundary—the canny afterguard of Emirates Team New Zealand held on straight, sailing into increased pressure and a favourable shift that helped them eke out further boat lengths ahead, so that when they tacked back their lead was assured. It was a masterclass of wind-reading and sailor’s intuition, with Peter Burling, Nathan Outteridge, Blair Tuke, and Andy Maloney sharing information effectively between them and reacting accordingly.
For INEOS Britannia, the writing looked to be on the wall, but the never-say-die attitude that has been carefully cultivated within the team came to the fore, and on the second windward leg, a rare miscalculation on the pressure from the Kiwis opened the door for the British to stage a comeback.
INEOS Britannia helmsmen Sir Ben Ainslie and Dylan Fletcher grabbed the opportunity with both hands, playing the far-right boundary to great effect and eating up the distance metre-by-metre to bring Britannia within striking distance at the second windward gate.
With a right-hand wind shift making both boats overstand on starboard tack on the final approaches to the gate, the teams elected to take opposite markers, with Emirates Team New Zealand bearing away around the port marker as Britannia tacked around the starboard. The official delta was measured at precisely zero seconds – literally, nothing separated the two boats.
This dead heat rounding set up a potentially fascinating downwind leg, but after gybing on the right boundary, Emirates Team New Zealand came scorching across on port gybe in a pressure patch that had been spotted by the team well in advance, and the resultant 180-metre gain was telling.
The Kiwis, having seen their lead evaporate once, were in no mood to give it up again. On the final beat, they played it conservatively up the right side, tacking on Britannia where necessary to bounce them to the left and rounded the final windward gate at 47 knots with a 17-second lead. It was brilliance combined with boat speed, and the results were devastating on the water.
A final downwind leg to the finish, textbook in its execution, saw Emirates Team New Zealand gybe off the right boundary and fly down the course before a final gybe on the port layline to angle into the finish line and the history books. The finishing delta was recorded at 37 seconds, and as INEOS Britannia crossed the line, they were quick to round up and applaud the victorious Emirates Team New Zealand crew, who were almost immediately surrounded by an armada of spectator boats and supporters.
Onboard ‘Taihoro’, the sails were quickly and efficiently stowed before the New Zealand flag was raised above a banner with the Catalan words: ‘Moltes Gràcies Barcelona’ – Many Thanks, Barcelona. Bernard Arnault, the Chairman and CEO, LVMH, and Pietro Beccari, Chairman and CEO, Louis Vuitton were welcomed aboard ‘Taihoro’ by the Kiwi sailors before the customary spraying of Moët & Chandon champagne in celebration.
After both teams made a fast tow back to the Port Vell—which was filled with spectator craft of all shapes and sizes – Ngāti Whātua Ōrākei once again greeted the arrival of ‘Taihoro’ at the dock. Emirates Team New Zealand have officially made history as the first continuous team to win the America’s Cup three times in a row, and the sense of elation around the dockside was palpable.
Stepping ashore, Peter Burling skipper of Emirates Team New Zealand put it in perspective as he struggled to take in just what he and the team had achieved, saying: "It’s a pretty surreal feeling, it's still definitely sinking in. In the America's Cup you’re all ready for a long battle but to be able to get it done today in just beautiful sailing conditions with a little bit of shift in it and just so many people cheering us on, was amazing.”
Talking about the race, and particularly where they let INEOS Britannia come back into it at the mid-way point, Burling commented: “It will be interesting to go back and review a couple parts of the race, it felt like we had the boat going really good but couldn't buy a shift at times. We got a relatively even start, they were quite close, so we just decided to get out to the right that we really liked but yeah really pleased the way we just continued to improve through the week, the boat was feeling awesome today and it was a real team effort.”
Reflecting on what it felt as a team to win the Louis Vuitton 37 th America’s Cup, Burling added: "Just incredibly proud of what we’ve accomplished. The America's Cup has got to be one of the hardest sporting trophies in the world to win. You’ve got to have so many parts come together to make it all work and now having done that three times in a row, it’s incredibly special.”
Peter Burling also added a mention to Ben Ainslie and the INEOS Britannia team saying: “All credit to Ben and INEOS Britannia, I think they put together an incredible challenge, they pushed us the whole way, obviously we got a good jump on the leaderboard but every race felt like a real battle and they were amazing challengers.”
Kevin Shoebridge, Chief Operating Officer for Emirates Team New Zealand very much saw it as a team effort all round, saying: “It’s an amazing feeling. I'm just so thrilled that it played out like it did today. It's been a tough couple of months, today made it all worth it. It has been a fantastic team effort from day one and I think that was shown in the way we performed today.”
Reflecting on the huge contribution that INEOS Britannia made to the event, Shoebridge added: “We have got a really close relationship with Ben and his team. They are great competitors, had a great boat and it has been fantastic to have them in the competition. We just got the better of them this time, but it wasn't easy – it was tough. So great respect to them for their campaign.”
Sir Ben Ainslie, understandably disappointed, reflected on a remarkable campaign for the British saying: “Mixed emotions of course, first of all I’ve got to say credit to Emirates Team New Zealand, an amazing achievement for that organisation and for our team to get into the America's Cup itself was a huge achievement and we've been on quite a journey for the last 10 years, and especially the last three years.
"Ultimately to fall short at the final hurdle is always tough, but we know that we've been up against one of the best if not ‘the’ best teams in the history of the Cup. We have to take that on the chin, and I think that the team have done a brilliant job to develop through this campaign, through this series and as one very plucky Brit said, it’s the courage to continue that counts, so that's what we're up for.”
Looking to the future, as well as reflecting on the support the team has received in Barcelona, Ainslie added: “We can't say enough about the support we've had here and back over in the UK, it has been unbelievable. I've never experienced anything like it and it has made a huge difference to the team, a great motivator and a great driver. As for the future of the team, we set out to win the Cup, we got close and we’re getting closer every time.
"To my mind when you set out to achieve a target, you’ve got to get there so we continue, we keep going and keep taking this organisation forward. Every time we do it we get more efficient, we learn more about the technical approaches, we learn more from our competitors, and I think we've got a great group of people and we can take it to the next level.”
Emirates Team New Zealand defended the Louis Vuitton 37th America’s Cup in style and accepted the trophy with class and grace officially at the main stage of the Race Village this evening. The future of the event will be announced in “due course,” according to Grant Dalton, CEO of America’s Cup Event and Emirates Team New Zealand, with the tradition being for a challenge to be issued as soon as the winning boat crosses the finish line of the last race.
One of the finest sports teams in the world, Emirates Team New Zealand have consistently set the bar high. Here in Barcelona, they just pushed it even higher with their historic third consecutive victory in the Louis Vuitton 37th America’s Cup – a remarkable achievement by a truly remarkable team.

America’s Cup: World media reacts to Team New Zealand’s Auld Mug defence
How the world’s media reacted to Emirates Team New Zealand’s 7-2 triumph over Ineos Britannia in Barcelona
‘A football score’
Tom Cary, the Telegraph UK
Not only is the America’s Cup the oldest competition in international sport, it is also one of the most idiosyncratic.
So it was that, as New Zealand crossed the finish line in Barcelona, to seal an ultimately comprehensive 7-2 victory over Ben Ainslie’s Ineos Britannia and lift the Auld Mug for the third time in a row, an official letter was being passed by Bertie Bickett, chairman of the Royal Yacht Squadron, under whose flag Ineos Britannia race, to his opposite number in the New Zealand Royal Yacht Squadron, challenging the Kiwis to another match. The challenge was accepted and Ineos are, as a consequence, official Challenger of Record for the 38th America’s Cup. The race for the next Cup has already started.

There will be those who will look at the final scoreline here and laugh at that statement, imagining this to be some sort of drubbing, as if it was a football score. Who will consider the millions spent as money down the drain. The truth is, the America’s Cup match is a two-horse race. And in a two-horse race, the fastest horse usually wins. New Zealand were definitely the faster horse.
The America’s Cup is so hard to win precisely because it is not fair. The odds are always stacked in favour of the defender. They set the rules, they decide the class of boat, they decide the venue, the challengers. They even run the event itself. That is why only four countries have ever won it in 173 years.
That is why the New York Yacht Club retained it for the first 130-odd years of the Cup’s existence.
Ultimately, Ineos were unable to upset the odds. New Zealand, who were able to spend two months longer designing their boat as they knew they were already in the final, who tested out different foils during the challenger series before deciding on their final package, who spent three weeks making refinements to their boat while assessing the opposition in the knockout rounds, were just too good. As Ainslie was happy to admit.
Great Britain’s challenge ‘sank to the bottom of the Mediterranean’
Riath Al-Samarrai, Daily Mail UK
After Britain’s latest challenge to win the America’s Cup sank to the bottom of the Mediterranean, Sir Ben Ainslie vowed that his pursuit of history will continue. Whether he remains on board the yacht is less certain.
The 47-year-old has made winning this trophy for his homeland his grand obsession and so the 7-2 defeat by Emirates Team New Zealand, which was rounded off on Saturday, will leave a painful scar and raise a number of questions.
Not the least of which concerns Ainslie himself. While he has confirmed he will front another assault on the Cup, he was coy on the topic of his precise role, having served as team principal and skipper in Barcelona. That Ineos Britannia became the first British boat in 60 years to reach the final means the campaign ought to be viewed as a success, but Ainslie will now take time to decide if he wishes to be at the wheel when the 38th edition of the Cup is staged.
With New Zealand and their skipper Peter Burling firmly settled on a winning formula – they are the first team in the modern era to claim the Cup three times in succession – Ineos Britannia have other matters to resolve beyond Ainslie. Chief among them is Sir Jim Ratcliffe’s involvement, which has seen the Manchester United co-owner pump in £250 million [$537m] since 2018.
Time will tell how that pans out and whether it impacts on the positive momentum that has been accrued by Ainslie’s team, which has excelled in the past two months, having been desperately poor in 2021 in Auckland.
If there is a source of frustration for Ainslie, beyond the pain of a comprehensive defeat, it will come from the nagging feeling that his yacht was dealt an iffy hand by the sea conditions.
All but two of the nine races were contested on flat water, which favoured the Kiwi boat. That could be chalked down to bad British luck or smart work by Team New Zealand’s designers, though ultimately there was no doubt that the strongest crew won.
Sir Ben Ainslie defiant
Rachel Steinberg, The Independent UK
Sir Ben Ainslie vowed to come back even stronger after his bid to end Great Britain’s 173-year wait to win the America’s Cup ended in a 7-2 defeat to Emirates Team New Zealand.
Ainslie’s Ineos Britannia challengers were the first British team to contest the America’s Cup in 60 years, and on Wednesday in Barcelona became the first Britons in 90 years to score points when they took two wins from the two-time Kiwi holders.
Emirates Team New Zealand, skippered by Peter Burling, replied with two more wins to set up Saturday’s match-point ninth race and, despite what was at times a closely fought battle, clung on for a 37-second victory in what was also the 37th edition of the sailing competition.
Ainslie told the event broadcaster: “It’s been a hell of a road through this event to get to these finals, and we had our moments in the finals but at the end of the day the better team won.
“I’d just like to say a huge thank you to everyone who supported us in Barcelona and back home. It’s just been incredible to see, and I tell you it’s made a huge difference to the team.
“Especially because we’ve had a few tough moments, which inevitably happens in these campaigns, the support we’ve had is just amazing.
“This isn’t going to be the end of the journey for us. We set out 10 years ago to win the America’s Cup, we’re getting closer each time.
“The trick is to keep going and get it home the next time.”
Three in a row
Alexander Smith, Reuters
New Zealand retained the America’s Cup with a 7-2 win over Britain on Saturday, after a performance that prompted defeated skipper Sir Ben Ainslie to label them as the “best team ever”.
The victory makes it a third win in a row for New Zealand, who again lifted the “Auld Mug” which they had won against Italy in Auckland in 2021 and against the US in Bermuda in 2017.
There were hugs among the victorious crew of eight on board Taihoro before the sleek AC75 headed back to shore with an armada of supporter boats, horns blaring and flags fluttering, for a traditional Māori welcome.
“It’s a pretty surreal feeling for me. I don’t think it’s really sunk in yet,” New Zealand skipper Peter Burling told reporters before going for the prizegiving ceremony as evening drew in on the Barcelona waterfront.
“I’m looking forward to hoisting the trophy ... it’s going to be an incredibly special moment. It doesn’t really feel like you’ve won the America’s Cup until you’ve done that,” he said.
New Zealand’s America’s Cup win marks a successful finale to a three-year campaign to retain the coveted trophy, which is billed as the oldest in international sport.
‘No coincidence’
Andy Bull, the Guardian
Ineos Britannia’s challenge for the 37th America’s Cup is over, and Ineos Britannia’s challenge for the 38th America’s Cup has just begun.
Emirates Team New Zealand won the ninth of the head-to-head races, and with it the match, 7-2. It means the New Zealanders are the first team in modern history to win the Cup three times in succession, and that Great Britain’s 173-year wait to win the Auld Mug will go on for who knows how long.
But in the moments after the defeat, Ineos Britannia’s skipper, Sir Ben Ainslie, confirmed that he will lead the team through another campaign, and that they will, again, be the official Challenger of Record.
If they’re going to win, they will have to beat a New Zealand team which Ainslie admiringly described as “the best team in the history of the Cup”.
They were too good for Britain this time, at any rate.
Team New Zealand’s boat Taihoro had the edge in the calmer waters and low winds that have prevailed in Barcelona during the regatta. Their boat goes so well in light conditions that you could blow it along with a paper fan.
It was no coincidence that Britain’s two wins came on the only racing day when the waves were up, and Taihoro, which has smaller foils than Britannia, struggled to cope in the choppy water.
‘Writing on the wall’ for Ineos
Live Sail Die
Emirates Team New Zealand concluded a historic chapter, winning the Louis Vuitton 37th America’s Cup after an epic final showdown in Barcelona against the Challenger of Record, Ineos Britannia, in a single race that ebbed and flowed from the outset but ultimately saw the Kiwis secure victory by 37 seconds.
On a day where the Barcelona waterfront was treated to the spectacle of a record-breaking 350 Patí Catala catamarans on the racecourse before racing, the British came out looking for a pre-start fight. In a shifting breeze of 7-11 knots on flat water, they entered on starboard before gybing immediately on to the Kiwi line to trail them out to the far-right boundary of the box and the race was on.
For Ineos Britannia, the writing looked to be on the wall, but the never-say-die attitude that has been carefully cultivated within the team came to the fore, and on the second windward leg, a rare miscalculation on the pressure from the Kiwis opened the door for the British to stage a comeback.
Onboard Taihoro, the sails were quickly and efficiently stowed before the New Zealand flag was raised above a banner with the Catalan words: “Moltes Gràcies Barcelona” – many thanks, Barcelona. Bernard Arnault, the chief executive of Louis Vuitton Moët Hennessy, was welcomed aboard Taihoro by the Kiwi sailors before the customary spraying of Moët & Chandon champagne in celebration.
Emirates Team New Zealand have officially made history as the first continuous team to win the America’s Cup three times in a row, and the sense of elation around the dockside was palpable.

Vape products target kids with flashy tech and flavors. Why hasn't the govt. shut it down?
by LISA FLETCHER, ANDREA NEJMAN, NATHAN AARON and TREVOR TAYLOR | Spotlight on America
WASHINGTON (SOA) — The FDA has approved only a few dozen e-cigarette products. None of them are food-flavored.
Still, there are hundreds of unauthorized, potentially dangerous vaping products being openly sold in stores, marketed to teens with fruity flavors and digital technology.
Now, US lawmakers are blasting top agencies for failing to get the problem under control.
Tobacco smoking has all but gone away among America's youth, but there's real concern that a slickly marketed new offender will form a new generation of nicotine addicts.
According to new data , although the numbers for vaping have gone down in the last year, nearly 8% of high school students use vapes or e-cigarettes and nearly 88% of them use a flavored product.
If this sounds familiar, it's because this has been a concern for years. We highlighted kid-friendly, fruity flavored vapes back in 2022 , when they were supposed to be banned for good.
But just in the last few weeks, our cameras discovered flavors like Rainbow, Sour Apple Ice and Lemonade, still for sale, right out in the open in stores at the DC area, which puts a "fun-filled spin in a sinister reality", said Jim Carroll, Former Director of the White House Office of National Drug Control Policy.
"These pens that look innocent, they're not, they're dangerous," Carroll said. "These are being intentionally designed to get kids addicted."
Some vaping products have reportedly contained heavy metals , even the deadly substance, fentanyl . Carroll pointed out that these vapes can have hundreds of times the amount of nicotine than they should. Others have caused serious health problems.
It's not just the fruity flavors attracting kids. New age vape devices we found online mirror cell phones, have Bluetooth, and come preloaded with digital games. Others are disguised to look like a common highlighter pen.
Carroll says they're flooding the market from China, a country that has already banned the sale of flavored e-cigarettes within its own borders.
"The Chinese government is not a friend to the United States, let there be no mistake," said Carroll. "They know exactly what they’re doing by sending these dangerous products to the US. They’re wiping out an entire generation."
It's happening, according to lawmakers, right under the nose of our federal regulators.
In a heated Congressional hearing this summer, Senator Dick Durbin raised his voice to both the FDA and officials from the Department of Justice.
"Do something," Senator Durbin said. "What in the hell have you been waiting for?"
Durbin showed a photo, taken by his staff, of several vape products that were being sold less than one mile from the FDA's headquarters, and pointed out that not a single one of the products was authorized by the FDA.
Lawmakers grilled FDA officials for inaction that they said could have wiped the products out of the hands of teens years ago.
In 2019, a Maryland court ordered the FDA to finish reviewing all unauthorized vaping product applications by September of 2021, essentially giving them the power to shut down the flow of vaping devices marketed to teens.
The FDA told us it has "processed" more than 26 million new tobacco product applications and only approved a few dozen. Still, 500,000 applications remain in the cue and unapproved vapes continue to flood the market.
So far, the FDA says it has fined 230 retailers, and issued more than 1,300 warning letters.
For Jim Carroll, there's no sum of money too high, or commitment of time too long to get this problem under control.
"The FDA is sending warning letters, that's not enough," he said. "We need action. Shut those shops down, prosecute the owners and make sure they’re following the laws that are on the books."
Action was promised this summer, as the FDA and the Department of Justice announced a task force in June, promising to address the illegal distribution and sale of vapes.
"It was a great headline," said Jim Carroll. "I haven't seen any action yet. I'm anxious for them to really start cracking down, making arrests and getting these products off the streets."
Spotlight on America posed a number of specific questions to the FDA regarding their handling of illegal vapes. You can read their full responses below.
What level of priority is addressing illegal vapes for the FDA?
The FDA is committed to continuing to stem the flow of unauthorized e-cigarettes into the United States – our comprehensive approach to tobacco product compliance and enforcement includes taking action against those across the supply chain, including manufacturers, importers, distributors and retailers who violate the law. To date, FDA has authorized 34 tobacco- and menthol-flavored e-cigarette products and devices, and those are the only e-cigarettes that may currently be lawfully marketed and sold in the U.S; the vast majority of products without authorization are at risk of enforcement action.
How many e-cigarette products are approved by the FDA, and are any of them flavored?
To date, FDA has authorized 34 tobacco- and menthol-flavored e-cigarette products and devices, and those are the only e-cigarettes that may currently be lawfully marketed and sold in the U.S.
In June of this year, the FDA authorized the marketing of four menthol-flavored e-cigarette products after an extensive scientific review.
How many warning letters has the FDA sent to makers of illegal vapes?
To date, FDA has issued over 680 warning letters to firms for manufacturing, selling, and/or distributing unauthorized new tobacco products, issued more than 690 warning letters to retailers for the sale of unauthorized tobacco products, and filed civil money penalty complaints against more than 70 manufacturers and 160 retailers for continued distribution and/or sale of unauthorized tobacco products.
Does the FDA follow up on the letters to ensure action is taken to stop the illegal sale of vapes? If so, what does that enforcement entail?
The FDA uses a comprehensive approach to tobacco product compliance and enforcement, including compliance training and education, monitoring of regulated industry’s compliance with the law through surveillance, inspections, and investigations, and actions directed at manufacturers, importers, distributors and retailers that violate the law. Depending on the specific violation, the FDA may take other types of action when necessary, such as issuing warning letters and civil money penalty complaints, as well as working with our federal partner agencies to effect seizures, injunctions or pursue criminal prosecution.
The FDA generally sends warning letters the first time an inspection or investigation reveals a violation of the law, and recipients are given 15 working days to respond with the steps they’ll take to correct the violation and to prevent future violations. Many recipients of warning letters correct the violative conduct. However, failure to promptly correct the violations can result in additional enforcement actions such as an injunction, seizure and/or civil money penalties.
On September 23, 2024, the FDA announced it was seeking civil money penalties against 11 retailers who previously received warning letters from FDA for selling unauthorized e-cigarettes. Follow-up inspections revealed that the retailers had failed to correct the violations, and the agency is accordingly now seeking a civil money penalty (CMP) of $20,678 from each retailer. CTP announced similar CMP actions for violations revelated during follow-up inspections in April 2024, Sept 2023., Nov. 2023, Dec. 2023 and Feb. 2024
How many vape applications are currently in the FDA’s queue? Given this amount, can the agency estimate a time when they will finish processing those applications?
“The FDA is committed to completing review of the unprecedented amount of premarket tobacco product applications it has received as soon as feasible,” said Brian King, Ph.D., M.P.H., director of the FDA’s Center for Tobacco Products. “The review of these applications is of the utmost public health importance, and we do not make decisions lightly—we must make sure final decisions issued on these applications are appropriate on both the scientific merits and the law.”
As noted in recent testimony to the Health Subcommittee of the House Committee on Energy and Commerce, the Center for Tobacco products has received nearly 27 million applications for new tobacco products. Despite the complexities of application review, the FDA has resolved more than 26 million of these applications. The remaining application in queue total approximately 500k.
Importantly, the FDA makes product-by-product determinations to ensure any new tobacco product meets the standards set forth by the Federal Food, Drug, and Cosmetic Act. Each application is reviewed individually and independently at each phase of the premarket application process, and the agency will make a decision based on the evidence provided within that application. Under the premarket tobacco application pathway, manufacturers must demonstrate that marketing of the new tobacco product would be appropriate for the protection of the public health. That standard requires the agency to consider the risks and benefits to the population as a whole—as laid out by Congress in the Federal Food, Drug, and Cosmetic Act—including users and non-users of tobacco products.
The FDA is committed to taking actions as promptly as practicable without sacrificing the scientific integrity of the review. We are working diligently to reduce application review times down to the 180-day statutory framework.
If and when the FDA identifies a manufacturer selling unauthorized vapes, does the agency involve the Department of Justice directly? If so, how?
The FDA works closely with our colleagues at the U.S. Department of Justice (DOJ) to take a variety of timely and impactful compliance and enforcement actions. This includes engagement on matters related to litigation, as the FDA does not have independent litigation authority.
For example, injunctions are filed by DOJ on the FDA’s behalf. To date, DOJ has filed complaints for permanent injunction against eight firms for continued violations relating to the manufacture, sale, and/or distribution of unauthorized new tobacco products.
The FDA also works closely with DOJ on domestic seizures. For example, in April 2024, the FDA, in coordination with DOJ, announced that the U.S. Marshals Service seized unauthorized e-cigarette products valued at more than $700,000 in a warehouse in California.
In addition to injunctions and seizures, the FDA engages with DOJ for legal consultation with regard to other current and potential future enforcement and compliance activities.
Importantly, addressing unauthorized e-cigarettes is a whole supply chain issue and an “All-of-Government” approach is critical. Accordingly, the FDA and DOJ – along with several other federal agencies - are working to strengthen interagency engagement with regard to e-cigarette enforcement. Specifically, on June 10, 2024, the FDA and DOJ announced the establishment of a federal multi-agency task force to bring together and coordinate relevant expertise, operational abilities, and enforcement authority across participating agencies.
How many manufacturers has the FDA gone after with regulatory action that are large-scale manufacturers rather than sellers, mixing vaping solutions in their retail establishment, and thus qualifying under the definition of manufacturer?
Enforcement efforts against unauthorized e-cigarettes are among the FDA’s highest priorities. However, with finite resources, the FDA must prioritize its compliance and enforcement actions to make the greatest impact on public health. One of the agency’s greatest priorities is targeted enforcement actions against those tobacco products that are popular with youth.
The FDA has taken numerous actions against these large firms as identified in the question, including Chinese companies responsible for some of the most popular e-cigarettes with youth, such as Puff Bar, Breeze, Mr. Fog, and Esco Bars. In recent years, these products have been identified as being among the most popular products used by U.S. youth according to the National Youth Tobacco Survey.
Examples of actions against these firms include issuing warning letters to Dongguan Hengtai Biotechnology, Co., Ltd (manufacturers of Mr. Fog) and Shenzhen Innokin Technology Co. Ltd. (manufacturers of Esco Bars) and placing several manufacturers on import alerts, including the makers of products popular with youth, including Elf Bar and Mr. Fog. These actions are part of a comprehensive effort across the supply chain to address these unauthorized tobacco products. For example, in April, the FDA, in coordination with DOJ, announced that the U.S. Marshals Service seized more than $700,000 of illegal e-cigarettes products from a warehouse in California, which included Puff Bar/Puff, Elf Bar/EB Design, Esco Bar and Smok brands. Additionally, last year, in coordination with U.S. Customs and Border Protection, more than $18 million in unauthorized e-cigarette products were seized at LAX airport, including Elf Bar/EB Create, Lost Mary, Funky Republic, RELX Pod and IPLAY Max, among others.
