The Students Industrial Work Experience Scheme (SIWES) is a unit under the Vice-Chancellor’s Office. It was established in 2016. The Students Industrial Work Experience Scheme (SIWES) is a skills training programme designed to expose and prepare students of universities and other tertiary institutions for the Industrial Work situation they are likely to meet after graduation.
The Students Industrial Work Experience Scheme (SIWES), is the accepted training programme, which is part of the approved Minimum Academic Standard in the various degree programmes for all Nigerian Universities. The scheme is aimed at bridging the existing gap between theory and practice of Sciences, Agriculture, Medical Sciences (including Nursing), Engineering and Technology, Management, Information and Communication Technology, and other professional educational programmes in the Nigerian tertiary institutions. It is aimed at exposing students to machines and equipment, professional work methods, and ways of safeguarding the work areas and workers in industries, offices, laboratories, hospitals, and other organizations.
It is a cooperative industrial internship program that involves institutions of higher learning, industries, the Federal Government of Nigeria, the Industrial Training Fund (ITF), and the Nigerian Universities Commission (NUC).
VISION AND MISSION OF MTU SIWES UNIT
To equip students with the necessary practical knowledge and technical skills for self-employment and effective involvement in Nigeria's industrial growth.
HISTORY OF SIWES
SIWES was founded in 1973 by ITF (Industrial Training Funds) to address the problem of tertiary institution graduates' lack of appropriate skills for employment in Nigerian industries. The Students' Industrial Work Experience Scheme (SIWES) was founded to be a skill training programme to help expose and prepare students of universities, Polytechnics and colleges of education for the industrial work situation to be met after graduation.
This system facilitates the transfer from the classroom to the workplace and aids in the application of knowledge. The program allows students to become acquainted with and exposed to the experience required in handling and operating equipment and machinery that are typically not available at their schools.
Prior to the establishment of this scheme, there was a rising concern and trend among industrialists that graduates from higher education institutions lacked appropriate practical experience for employment. Students who entered Nigerian universities to study science and technology were not previously trained in the practical aspects of their chosen fields. As a result of their lack of work experience, they had difficulty finding work.
As a result, employers believed that theoretical education in higher education was unresponsive to the needs of labor employers. Thousands of Nigerians faced this difficulty till 1973. The fund's main motivation for establishing and designing the scheme in 1973/74 was launched against this context.
The ITF (Industrial Training Fund) organization decided to aid all interested Nigerian students and created the SIWES program. The federal government officially approved and presented it in 1974. During its early years, the scheme was entirely supported by the ITF, but as the financial commitment became too much for the fund, it withdrew in 1978. The National Universities Commission (NUC) and the National Board for Technical Education (NBTE) were given control of the scheme by the federal government in 1979. The federal government handed over supervision and implementation of the scheme to ITF in November 1984. It was taken over by the Industrial Training Fund (ITF) in July 1985, with the federal government bearing entire responsibility for funding.
OBJECTIVES OF SIWES
The Industrial Training Fund’s Policy Document No. 1 of 1973 which established SIWES outlined the objectives of the scheme as:
- Provide an avenue for students in Institutions of higher learning to acquire industrial skills and experience in their respective courses of study.
- Prepare students for the Industrial Work situation they are likely to experience after graduation.
- Expose students to work methods and techniques of handling equipment and machinery that may not be available in their Institutions.
- Make the transition from school to the world of work easier; and enhance students’ networks for later job placements.
- Provide students with an opportunity to apply their knowledge to real work situations, thereby bridging the gap between theory and practice; and
- Enlist and strengthen Employers’ involvement in the entire educational process; thereby preparing the students for employment in Industry and Commerce.

The Students Industrial Work Experience Scheme (SIWES) is a new Directorate under the Vice-Chancellor’s Office. It was established on 20th April, 2012
The Students Industrial Work Experience Scheme (SIWES) is a skills training programme designed to expose and prepare students of universities and other tertiary institutions for the Industrial Work situation they are likely to meet after graduation. It is also a planned and structured programme based on stated and specific career objectives which are geared towards developing the occupational competencies of participants (Mafe, 2009). Consequently, the SIWES programme is a compulsory graduation requirement for all Nigerian university students offering certain courses.
The Students Industrial Work Experience Scheme (SIWES), is the accepted training programme, which is part of the approved Minimum Academic Standard in the various degree programmes for all Nigerian Universities. The scheme is aimed at bridging the existing gap between theory and practice of Sciences, Agriculture, Medical Sciences (including Nursing), Engineering and Technology, Management, and Information and Communication Technology and other professional educational programmes in the Nigerian tertiary institutions. It is aimed at exposing students to machines and equipment, professional work methods and ways of safeguarding the work areas and workers in industries, offices, laboratories, hospitals and other organizations.
Prior to establishing the Scheme, industrialists and other employers of labour felt concerned that graduates of Nigeria Universities were deficient in practical background studies preparatory for employment in Industries and other organizations. The employers thus concluded that the theoretical education being received in our higher institutions was not responsive to the needs of the employers of labour. Consequently, the rationale for initiating and designing the scheme by the Industrial Training Funds ITF, in 1973.
- To provide an avenue for students in the Nigerian universities to acquire industrial skills and experience during their course of study;
- To prepare students for the work situation they are likely to meet after graduation;
- To expose the students to work methods and techniques in handling equipment and machinery that may not be available in their universities;
- To allow the transition phase from school to the world of working environment easier and facilitate students’ contact for later job placements;
- To provide students with an opportunity to apply their theoretical knowledge in real work situation thereby bridging the gap between theory and practice.
Happy Students

The ITF will not pay for any attachment period that is less than 24 weeks. In most institutions, SIWES is done at the end of the 2nd semester examination of either 300, 400 or 500 level. The time and duration will have to be worked out jointly by each school and the directorate and the ITF.

SIWES AND EDUCATION
Siwes (it) introduction, aims and objectives in nigeria: all you need to know.
What Exactly Is SIWES?
The Student Industrial Work Experience Scheme (SIWES) or simply Industrial Training (IT) is a compulsory (or rather not) skills acquisition programme designed to effectively prepare students of Nigerian Universities, Polytechnics and Colleges of Education for industrial work.
The scheme also help the students to obtain the needed experience in handling equipment and machines that are usually not available in their institution (especially practical works).
Before the establishment of the scheme, there was a growing concern among industrialists, that graduates of institutions of higher learning lacked adequate practical background studies preparatory for employment in industries. This leads to employers asking for work experience from applicants applying for job in offices, industries, and so on.
Thus, employers were of the opinion that the theoretical education in higher institutions wasn’t enough to cater for the needs of the employers of labour.
SIWES Introduction And Short History
SIWES introduction, initiation and design was done by the Industrial Training Fund (I.T.F) in 1993 to acquaint students with the skills of handling employer’s equipments and machines.
The Industrial Training Fund (I.T.F) solely funded the scheme during its formative years. However, due to financial constraints, the fund was withdrew from the scheme in 1978.
The Federal Government notice the impact of the industrial training then takeover the scheme and handed it's management to both the National Universities Commission (N.U.C) and the National Board for Technical Education (N.B.T.E) in 1979.
The management and implementation of the scheme was however reverted to the I.T.F by the Federal Government in November 1984 and the administration was effectively taken over again by the Industrial Training Fund in July 1985 and was solely funded by the Federal Government since then.
Aims & Objectives Of SIWES
The following are the aims and objectives SIWES (IT) in Nigeria:
1. To provide the avenue for students in institutions of higher learning to acquire industrial skills and experiences in their course of study.
2. To prepare students for the industrial work they’re likely to meet after graduation.
3. To help students to obtain proper work ethics and techniques in handling equipments and machines that may not be available in their respective institutions.
4. To ease the transition from school to the world of work and enhance students contact for later job placement.
5. To provide students with the opportunity to apply their knowledge in field of work thereby bridging the gap between theory and practice.
6. To strengthen employers involvement in the entire educational process and prepare students for employment after graduation.
Preparation And How To Increase Your Chance Of Success In The SIWES Programme
If you really want to have a successful SIWES/IT programme this year, then this informative post is made for you.
You’re about to learn how to prepare and have success in your SIWES programme as well as your grade. This have been specially treated based on experience from those that have participated in the SIWES programme.
You’ll also get to know some costly mistakes you really have to avoid in order to have desired success.
Finally, you’ll find answers to important questions you have to sincerely answer by yourself before, during and after your SIWES programme in Nigeria.
There we go…
1. SIWES Orientation
Using myself as a case of study being a student of LAUTECH. Every year, the school usually offer orientation to SIWES participating students prior to the commencement of the programme. Delegates of ITF will be sent to the school to give such orientation. Here, students were orientated and directed by ITF representatives on how to secure placement, collect your logbook, filling forms and submission, etc. I want to believe most schools usually do this as well in Nigeria.
2. Payment For SIWES Logbook
You have to pay to collect your logbook, forms, etc. Having paid and collected your logbook, forms etc. and have gotten good knowledge about the programme, have you started visiting the correct locations of your desired course-related firms and submitting your application letters while waiting for possible feed backs?
If yes, you about getting ready because for serious work.
3. Sending Of SIWES/IT Application Letters
Most Nigerian institutions basically give their I.T students an already prepared SIWES application letters so that they will print more copies, enter their details and send to their desired course-related companies.
But in an uncommon situation, the I.T students may be required to write it by themselves. So, which category are you in?
Quickly read: How to write an acceptable SIWES/IT letter
4. Acceptance & Commencement Of Your Training
Once you have sent out your request for placement, the firm may be willing to accept or you. In case your letter just like my first attempt, try other places as well. You can not always get NO.
Now, once you’ve been accepted and have probably commenced your industrial training, you have to abide by the organization rules and work ethics.
Then, you have to carry out activities, projects, jobs that are related to your course of study in school in the section(s) you’ve been assigned to.
- As an Office Management or Public Administration Industrial Training student in the bank, you have to work in the Customer Care Department and not in the Security Department. That's absurd by some length.
- As an Industrial Mathematics student working in a local government secretariat, hope you’re working in the Budget Department and not in the Agric Department?
You can ask the establishment officer to place you in the best place relating to your course of study. You're there to gain experience and not otherwise.
5. Fill and Submit Your S.C.A.F Form
Now that you've begin your SIWES. Fill properly and sent your Student Commencement Attachment Form to the ITF Area Office in the state your training is carried out. I'll advice you to submit it by yourself.
6. Signing & Stamping Of Your SIWES Logbook
While at your workplace, you have to get your Industry-Based Supervisor to sign and stamp your logbook. It might be daily, weekly, monthly or at the end of your industrial training. Just get your supervisor to sign dat ting!
Quickly read: the correct way of filling your SIWES logbook
You’ll also have to always be punctual and go to your workplace, because you may not know the exact days ITF representative or University-Based supervisor assigned to you by your school will likely visit.
After you’re through with your industrial training, how about your logbook?
Random questions:
- if my training was stipulated for six months, do my logbook have to be completely filled up to the required six months and not below or above?
As an Industrial Mathematics student, I was opportune to do my own industrial training at a Local Government Secretariat.
I worked at the Budget department but not under my office-based supervisor. My supervisor is the Establishment Officer of the secretariat. Still he's responsible for signing and stamping of my logbook.
It doesn't necessarily mean to fill up your logbook. Just submit it like that as far as it has been filled by both you and your employer
Now that your Form 8 have been filled by you, signed and stamped by your employer, then you’ll have to submit the form to the ITF Area Office closest to where you do your Industrial Training.
While at the ITF Area Office, your Form 8 will be cross-checked before your logbook will then be signed and stamped by any of the officials.
After that, you’ll be given back this form together with your logbook which you’ll submit to probably your school ITF unit when you return to your school.
8. SIWES Report
To obtain good grade, you have to write good siwes report.
Quickly read: how to write a proper and alterly presentable SIWES report
9. Oral Presentation
Be prepared to be interviewed by your lecturers/supervisors so as to confirm if actually you participated and benefited from the training.
You'll be asked the basic things you learn. They're stuffs you already know, so don't put pressure on yourself.
Some department don't even present orally. Just as a case, the Agric Faculty generally do not require presentation in my school.
There you go folks! I wish you all success for the future.
