Writing has been my passion practically since I learned to read in kindergarten. I would write stories about princesses and my family dog, Gansett. When it came time to look at colleges, I was set on attending one with a strong creative writing program. Ultimately, I graduated from Johns Hopkins University with a B.A. in Writing Seminars.

Today, colleges across the country offer creative writing as a major. Because writing skills are essential for a wide range of careers, and because most curricula emphasize broad liberal arts competencies, a degree in creative writing can set you up for success in numerous fields, whether you want to be an editor or a lawyer.

Overview of the Creative Writing Major

Creative writing is about more than spinning tales. For your major, you’ll generally need to pursue a curriculum grounded in literature, history, foreign language, and other humanities courses, along with distribution courses, if the college requires them.

Most creative writing majors must participate in workshops, in which students present their work and listen to peer critiques, usually with a certain number of advanced courses in the mix. In some cases, colleges will ask you to specialize in a particular genre, such as fiction, poetry, or playwriting. 

To succeed in creative writing, you’ll need to have a tough spine, in order to open yourself up to feedback from your classmates and instructors. You may need to give readings in public — if not as an undergraduate, certainly during your career. Of course, a passion for creating is essential, too, as is a willingness to revise your work and learn from the greats and your peers.

A creative writing major opens up doors to many careers, including journalism, content marketing, copywriting, teaching, and others. Even careers that don’t center around writing often have a strong writing component: you’ll need to write reports, deliver presentations, and so on.

Some writers go on to earn an MFA, which will help you hone your craft. It’s also often a prerequisite for teaching creative writing at the college level.

What to Look for in a College as a Creative Writing Major

Many world-renowned authors have another claim to fame: professorships. Writers who have taught their craft include (among many others):

• Maya Angelou (Wake Forest University)
• Colson Whitehead (many colleges, including Vassar College and Columbia University)
• Stephen Dixon (Johns Hopkins University)
• Viet Thanh Nguyen (University of Southern California)
• Eula Biss (Northwestern University)
• Toni Morrison (Princeton University)

Be aware that as an undergraduate, you may not be able to learn from the greats. That’s why it’s important to look into which courses these faculty teach before you have dreams of being mentored by Salman Rushdie — who is a Distinguished Writer in Residence at NYU.

Genres Offered

While many schools that have creative writing majors offer fiction and poetry courses and tracks, there are some niche genres that could be more difficult to find. If you’re interested in playwriting, for example, you won’t find that at every school. Before you decide on a program, be sure it includes the genres you’d like to explore further, whether that’s flash fiction, creative nonfiction, or something else.

Workshopping Opportunities

The core of most quality creative writing curriculum is workshopping. This means sharing your work in your classes and listening to your peers discuss and critique it. While this may sound intimidating, it can do a lot to help you hone your work and become a better writer. Look for colleges that make this the bedrock of their curriculum.

Showcasing Opportunities

Are there opportunities to present your work, such as college-sponsored readings where undergraduates can participate? Or, perhaps the school has a great literary journal. At my school, students could submit their plays and have them performed by fellow students.

No matter what major you’re considering, the first step is ensuring you’re academically comparable to students who were previously accepted to the college or university. Most selective schools use the Academic Index to filter out applicants who aren’t up to their standards.

You’ll also want to demonstrate your fit with the school and specific major with the qualitative components of your application, like your extracurriculars and essays. For a prospective creative writing major, the essay is particularly important because this is a way to demonstrate your writing prowess. Activities might include editing your school’s newspaper or literary journal, publishing your work, and participating in pre-college writing workshops.

An English undergraduate degree from Saint Mary’s gives students a critical foundation in the study of literature through historical and genre-based contexts alongside new theoretical approaches. Students can choose from a wide array of subject areas such as Drama and Theatre Studies, Cultural Studies and Literary Theory, Medieval and Renaissance Literature, Eighteenth-Century, Romantic and Victorian Literature, Modern Literature, Twentieth and Twenty-First-Century Literature, Indigenous Literature, Black Atlantic Studies, and Postcolonial and World Literatures. Major 

Students wishing to major in English must satisfy the general requirements set out by the Faculty of Arts, and complete forty-two (42) credit hours in English including three (3) credit hours at the Introductory level - ENGL 1XXX.

The Department offers five Minors.

A minor consists of at least twenty-four (24) credit hours in English with a maximum of three (3) credit hours at the 1000 level and a minimum grade point average of 2.0.

Students across the University can take discipline-based English Minor, as well as any of the following thematic minors: Creative Writing; Culture, Race and Resistance in Literature; Dramatic Literature; and English Language .

There is also a new Minor in British Studies, which we offer jointly with the History Department. 

The thematic Minors can also be taken by students in the English Major or Honours program, to enhance their degree.

The Department of English Language and Literature offers a wide variety of courses leading up to both major and minor concentrations in English, as well as an honours degree. The core of the program reflects a traditional approach to English studies, including literary-historical and genre courses. What makes the department distinctive, however, are a number of courses cross-listed with other disciplines or programs, such as:

• Irish Studies. 

This feature allows students to expand their area of academic study in ways that reflect interdisciplinary approaches and their own developing interests.  The Department also offers enhanced minors in:

Major in English

Minor in English

Minor in Creative Writing

A minor in Creative Writing gives students a chance to make art — poems, stories, works for performance —out of words, and also to consider literature from a maker’s perspective. Our creative writing minors come from all over the university: some major in English; some major in other disciplines, entirely. What brings our students together is an experience of the vitality of both written and spoken word. Our core courses are seminars in poetry-, fiction-, drama-, and nonfiction-writing in which students have a chance to hone their craft(s) in company. We also offer a selection of lecture-style courses where students study literature from their vantage as scholar/makers, and respond to what they're reading in both creative and critical forms.  

Students who declare a Minor in Creative Writing must take: 

• at least twelve (12) credit hours in Creative Writing in at least two of the four genres offered (fiction, poetry, drama, non-fiction) 
• twelve (12) credit hours more in English courses beyond three (3) credit hours in ENGL at the 1000-level. 

Prerequisite:  Three (3) credit hours in English at the 1000 level  

Strongly recommended courses:   The Study of Poetry ( ENGL 2393 ) ;  The Study of Narrative ( ENGL 2392 )

Minor in Culture, Race and Resistance 

A minor in “Culture, Race and Resistance in Literature” brings together a diverse range of courses that examine issues of race, nationalism, globalization, social justice, activism, and cultural resistance. It enables students to specialize in the study of literature from transnational, translocal and interdisciplinary perspectives. The courses investigate postcolonial, anti-colonial, black and Indigenous writing alongside theories of cultural, feminist and literary analysis. The theories and literature examined cover a range of periods and cultures, and include topics such as:

• African women’s writing,
• South Asian literature,
• Mi’kmaq literature,
• black Atlantic and black British literature,
• Irish literature, and
• critiques of race and popular culture.

The minor offers an exciting opportunity for students to explore how literature reflects and galvanizes resistant cultural movements in ways that remold our contemporary world.

Prerequisite : Three (3) credit hours in ENGL at the 1000-level.

Strongly recommended courses : Literary Theory I ( ENGL 3302 ) , and/or Literary Theory II ( ENGL 3303 ) , Cultural Studies ( ENGL 3343 ) .

Minor in Dramatic Literature

A minor in Dramatic Literature provides students with an opportunity to specialize in drama as a literary form read within a context of staging and theatre history and from a perspective of performance theory. A dedicated minor brings together courses covering drama from a wide array of historical, thematic, international, national, and regional backgrounds, beginning with the antique drama of Greece and Rome and extending to contemporary drama and performance. Students explore dramatic literature from a range of theoretical and cultural approaches that shaped the study of drama and theatre in their vibrant and diverse responses to society, politics, ideology, and history. Literature offers students a unique and exciting opportunity to study one of the oldest genres of literary and cultural expression and to understand it as an agent of cultural and social critique and change across its long history.

Prerequisite: Three (3) credit hours in ENGL at the 1000-level.

The following courses already exist and are regularly offered, and they can be considered to fulfill the minor credit requirement:

Minor in English Language

A minor in English language allows students to study the English language as a subject, explicitly focusing on its grammar, its history and varieties, its uses and users. In taking the minor students will not only acquire extensive knowledge of English, but also learn how to describe a particular language and its varieties, and how to linguistically characterize instances of discourse in English – from everyday talk and texts to literary genres. Such explicit knowledge of English is complementary to studies of English Literature, Linguistics, Modern Languages or indeed any field where explicit knowledge of the grammar, dialects, history, and discourse patterns of English might be useful.     

Courses listed below can be taken for credit towards a Minor in English Language.  On the recommendation of the program coordinator/chair of English, students may substitute a linguistics course and/or an English literature course in an area of particular interest and relevance for their program of study.

Creative writing at smcm.

The English Department integrates literature and creative writing across many seminars and workshops, but students may also pursue a Creative Writing Minor and/or structure their English major to focus their electives on upper-level writing courses. Creative Writing is a large part of the campus community from our VOICES Reading Program to the literary magazine AVATAR and to the various creative writing classes our school has to offer.

SENIOR SPOTLIGHT: EJ ROREM ’24

Each year, our sophomore Tower Scholars sit down with the NexPoint Tower Scholar seniors to interview them so that they can create a “Senior Spotlight” blog post highlighting the seniors’ unique stories. Seniors share their journeys to develop a well-informed perspective on policymaking and international affairs through a combination of theory and practice in the program, alongside their multidisciplinary major courses of study. The conversations captured reflect the experience of our scholars and their learnings not only in the Tower Center but at SMU overall.

Rylan Robb’26 interviewed EJ Rorem ’24 to learn more about his time as a NexPoint Tower Scholar and to understand how the program helped develop skills needed for a career in public policy.

A senior graduating in 2024 and currently majoring in political science and statistical science and minoring in public policy and international affairs, EJ hopes to complete a Boren Scholarship and work for the federal government.

Question/Prompt 1: What does the Tower Scholars Program mean for you both personally and academically?

Being a part of the Tower Scholars Program has been both personally and academically transformative for me. Academically speaking, it’s provided me an excellent preparation for a career in foreign policy. The program has equipped me with essential skills to become an effective analyst. I’ve learned to understand the key players and grasp the intricacies of the policy process, which is absolutely invaluable. Moreover, the experience I’ve gained in memo writing is crucial for anyone who wants to work in policymaking.

On a personal level, being in a tight-knit cohort of ten students all connected through the Tower Program has been a great experience. We’ve taken many classes together, which has fostered a strong sense of camaraderie among us. The staff, despite undergoing transitions, has been incredibly supportive, organizing events both on and off campus. This has enriched our experience immeasurably. It’s truly been an awesome journey to gain this kind of exposure while surrounded by such remarkable individuals.

Question/Prompt 2: How was your senior practicum for the Tower Scholars Program?

My internship at Pointe Bello was an incredible opportunity I owe to the program. Logistically, the Tower Center helped a lot with streamlining the placement and application process. My time at Pointe Bello allowed me to directly engage with the intersections of U.S. national security and private sector initiatives.

Private intelligence is a rapidly developing field, and my work at Pointe Bello primarily involved leveraging open-source intelligence (OSINT). I monitored the global activities of Chinese state-owned enterprises, especially their involvement in the developing world through the Belt and Road Initiative. This helps inform the firm and its clients on how to develop strategies that could enhance U.S. companies’ competitive edge in regions like Africa and Latin America. Alongside that work, I also wrote a research paper on the pace and progress of professionalization in the private intelligence sector. Being able to pair that academic work with practical experience through my internship was really enjoyable.

Question/Prompt 3: What advice would you have for incoming freshmen?

If you’re even remotely interested in the Tower Scholars Program, my advice is to apply. The application process itself is enlightening—it prompts you to really analyze your own interests in depth and understand them better. But remember, there are numerous opportunities out there for students interested in public policy besides the Tower Program as well. The Center for Presidential History and the Bush Center are fantastic resources, and I’ve gotten a lot out of attending their events and getting to know their staff.

There’s a wealth of activities to get involved in both on and off campus. Make it a point to constantly apply for internships and seek ways to immerse yourself in your field of interest. For me, internships and study abroad programs were high priorities. Each summer, I made sure to apply to something, ideally multiple somethings. In my first year, even though it was virtual, I found that a lot of internships in D.C. were more accessible to out-of-state applicants. I eventually was awarded a Critical Language Scholarship (CLS) for the study of the Persian language. I would definitely recommend that program to students trying to gain critical language proficiency.

Our Fellowship Office is exceptional as well, and the staff has been very supportive of me throughout my time at SMU. In my second year, I applied for numerous internships and landed one through the Fund for American Studies (TFAS). That program provides housing, some scholarships, courses that can be taken for SMU credit, and an internship placement, which is of excellent value. Last summer, I got to travel to Tajikistan with the CLS program. If you’re leaning towards a career in foreign policy, study abroad experiences can be particularly meaningful. We have some in-house programs at SMU, but again, critical languages are high-value skills that can come with fully paid study abroad opportunities, so that’s definitely worth considering seriously. Overall, just keep moving. Keep looking for and applying to cool opportunities and you’ll end up building really useful connections and experiences.

Question/Prompt 4: What has been your favorite course at SMU?

My favorite class at SMU has undoubtedly been Gateway to Global Policymaking, taught by Professors Newton and Stanley. It was the first course I took in the Tower Program with my cohort. We went from zero to sixty pretty quickly, diving deep into complex topics with incredible guest speakers and engaging class debates. It was my first big experience as a Tower Scholar, and it holds a special place in my heart; not just for the nostalgia, but also because the teaching was outstanding, especially the memo writing component, which I found immensely useful. The combination of novelty, fantastic teachers, the learning process, and my cohort being there together made it my favorite class.

Another class that stands out is Coexistence and Conflict in the Middle East by Professor Sabri Ates. It was a whirlwind exploration of various ethnic and religious minorities in the Middle East and the unique struggles they face. This was an honors-section class, so the class size was capped at about 15, which allowed for a more intimate setting where we would cover the necessary lectures and then spend the rest of the time in thoughtful class discussions.

Additionally, for a creative and intellectual change of pace, I took an honors creative writing course with Dr. Rubin. It involved reading, discussing, and writing short stories, which was a very refreshing change of pace from the other courses I was taking. It provided a welcome respite from some of the more demanding courses in statistics and political science.

Question/Prompt 5: What is your immediate plans after college, and what’s your 10-year plan?

I hope to go back to Tajikistan through another program, possibly the Boren Scholarship. The scholarship offers non-competitive eligibility, which can help when applying for government jobs, and a one-year commitment to federal service that aligns perfectly with my aspirations. I’d love to work in foreign policy and national security as an analyst. I’m currently looking at applying to positions within the State Department, the Department of Defense, and various intelligence agencies. I’ve decided to hold off on pursuing a master’s degree for the time being. I want to gain some practical experience first.

Looking 10 years ahead, I anticipate pursuing a master’s degree, hopefully armed with a clearer understanding of what will further my career at that point. In the very long term, I envision becoming a professor of practice. I’d like to have a career that would inform my lectures and allow me to pass along some practical insights. To me, some of the most fascinating professors and guest lecturers have been those who’ve traversed beyond academia and have brought back some interesting real-world experiences to share. That’s the kind of professor I aspire to be after a fulfilling career in the field.

English - Creative Writing

About the program.

The Creative Writing Program balances writing practice and literary study in the context of a liberal arts education. Students work closely with our faculty of published writers and often have the opportunity to work with other renowned writers as part of the SMSU Visiting Writers Series. The flexibility of the program allows students to choose courses which suit their needs, goals, and interests. Specific courses are chosen by students with the advice and approval of their advisors and the Director of Creative Writing. Senior creative writing majors are required to enroll in the one-credit Senior Portfolio Workshop during the Fall Semester of their final year. This is an excellent area of study for those interested in double-majoring. English majors have their own lounge, the Holm & Dacey Lounge, which houses a lending library of books and literary magazines.

An English with Creative Writing Emphasis Major should...

Students should read a broad spectrum of classic and contemporary literature, as well as have experience writing fiction, poetry, personal essays, and/or dramatic scripts.

• The Spur (SMSU student newspaper): a chance for students to practice writing for the campus audience
• Writing Center: upper-class students are eligible to become tutors
• Scholarship/Mentorship: allows students to work one-on-one with SMSU faculty while receiving tuition reimbursement
• Perceptions : a literary and arts journal for students to have their works published
• The English Club: students attend regional and national writing conferences, as well as plan writing-related events
• Readings and Open Mic Events: students may read their own writing or hear the writing of nationally-known writers
• Marshall Festival: opportunities to see numerous readings, panels, and discussions with regional and nationally-known authors, as well as volunteer to work in various aspects behind-the-scenes
• Creating Spaces: students serve as the first-tier judges for an annual creative writing contest for 3rd to 12th grade students in the 18-county region

Students pursuing an English major with a specialization in creative writing must fulfill all requirements for the English major. All 12 elective hours within the regular major will be devoted to creative writing courses: namely, ENGL 2390    followed by three sections of ENGL 3390   .
