Position Summary
The Department of Environmental Health Sciences at the Columbia University Mailman School of Public Health is seeking a highly motivated candidate for the position of Research Worker. This person will work with Dr. Haotian (Howie) Wu. Dr. Wu’s lab investigates how harmful environmental exposures affect molecular mechanisms of reprogramming of health and disease trajectories.
Our research activities are specifically focused on small RNA sequencing, DNA methylation arrays, and targeted extracellular vesicle purification from human biosamples. Example projects include examining how early life environments, both environmental chemicals and social determinants, affect aging and biomarkers such as DNA methylation. The research worker will also conduct experimental procedures and collaborate with lab members to 1) process biological samples and 2) develop and optimize molecular analysis techniques. They will perform data management, quality control and cleaning of incoming data as necessary.
Responsibilities
- Performs day-to-day data management across projects. Develops and maintains codebooks. Performs quality control processes for incoming data. Performs data auditing and cleaning. Provides regular updates to research team on status of data analysis. (50%)
- Carries out requested sample processing and analytical assays. (40%)
- Works with the laboratory members to develop and optimize new lab assays. (5%)
- Perform other duties as assigned. (5%)
Minimum Qualifications
- Master’s degree and at least one year of experience, or a Bachelor’s degree and at least three years of related experience or equivalent in education, training, and experience.
Preferred Qualifications
- Master’s degree in public health, epidemiology or a related field.
- Related work experience in biology-oriented laboratories, particularly outside of classroom settings, is preferred.
- Other strengths will also be considered as a plus, including excellent computer skills, ability to communicate effectively (verbally and in writing), ability to organize and prioritize, and attention to detail.
