The main gateway of the Taj Mahal is a curved shape and looks beautiful. There comes a beautiful garden after entering through the main gate. The garden has a long pool of water. The garden has beautiful beds of flowers and green trees. The Masjid is located on the left side of the Taj, which is built using red sandstones. The rest house is located on the right side of the Taj; it is named Saqqara Khaana. The Taj Mahal is constructed using 28 different types of precious stones and varieties of marble. About Taj Mahal

The world-famous Taj Mahal was created because of the vision of the Mughal Emperor Shah Jahan. After she passed away, he built this monument in honour of his devoted wife, Mumtaz Mahal.

My Experience with Taj Mahal

On the day of the full moon in October of this year, I went to the Taj Mahal with a few of my schoolmates. The silvery moonlight glistening everywhere and glamorising the Taj brings out the best in its splendour. Greenery and flowerbeds nicely adorn the area around it. I was ecstatic to visit the Taj. Hundreds of men, women, and kids gathered to admire the Taj's magnificence. There were sizable groups of foreigners arriving. We also clicked many pictures in front of the monument.

After Mumtaz Mahal passed away, Shah Jahan erected the Taj Mahal in her honour and as a memorial. According to legend, Shah Jahan gave his wife the Taj Mahal as a gift. It is regarded as a representation of love and the tie between a husband and wife. It's interesting to note that the Taj Mahal is thought to represent Mumtaz's various emotions because it appears pinkish in the morning, milky white in the evening, and golden when the moon is out.

My Visit to Taj Mahal

A trip to a historical site is always a thrilling adventure. It is an exciting journey. During my recent summer vacation, when I visited Agra, I had one such encounter. I took the train to get to Agra with my family. After a short period of recovery, we started our sight seeing tour. Agra has a rich history. In India, numerous stunning historical sites are worth visiting. The most spectacular of all, though, is the Taj Mahal in Agra. First, we went to the Taj Mahal. The Mughal emperor Shah Jahan erected the Taj Mahal 350 years ago as a tribute to his beloved queen Mumtaj. It is situated along the Yamuna River's bank.

On all sides, it appeared white and identical. Green glass tufts and hot Cyprus tree shoots enhanced its majestic majesty. We descended the stairs and under the dome, in a dim room, we discovered the king and queen's graves. The side walls were ornamented with bits of glass in various colours and Quranic couplets. Each of the four minarets at the major buildings served as a watchman.

We finished our tour of the Taj Mahal at about noon and left the area. My journey to the Taj Mahal was a lot of fun. It was a unique event that, in addition to being intellectually stimulating, provided us with a taste of our nation's great heritage.

It was built by the Mughal Emperor Shah Jahan to house the tomb of his favorite wife, Mumtaz Mahal. It represents the excellence of Mughal architecture. Around the world, many people associate the Taj Mahal with India ; this is one reason India is famous.

It has one of the most splendid architecture, but for most people, it symbolizes the powerful love of a husband for his wife. It also reminds us of power of love and how it has set an example for the generations to come.

History of Taj Mahal

In 1631 the Mughal Emperor Shah Jahan ordered the Taj Mahal to be built in memory of wife Mumtaz Mahal, who died on 17th June of the same year while giving birth to their 14th child.

The construction of the major building started in 1632 and got completed in 1648, whereas the surrounding buildings and the construction of the garden were completed five years later.

The grief of Shah Jahan for his wife’s death was documented by the imperial court, illustrates the love story, which was the inspiration for the Taj Mahal. Shah Jahan brought the finest artisans from around the world to build the building and honour the memory of his loving wife.

He wished to build something that had never been done before and wished to give the last gift to his wife to whom he loved so much.

Even today, people sing praises for the Shah Jahan’s great gesture. Taj Mahal makes you appreciate and believe in love like never. The bodies of Shah Jahan and Mumtaz Mahal buried next to each other, symbolizing that even after death, they stayed side by side and registered themselves as the eternal lovers in the lovers.

The Architecture of Taj Mahal

Taj Mahal was declared as a UNESCO heritage site in 1983. The marble with which they built the Taj Mahal, imported from the various countries from all over the world.

All the previous Mughal buildings were primarily built by the red sandstone. It believed that around a thousand elephants were used to transport the building to the materials.

The design of the Taj Mahal incorporates the traditional Persian design and the earlier Mughal architecture. The specific inspiration was taken by the Timurid, specifically Timur’s tomb in the Samarkand and other Mughal architectural buildings.

Under the patronage of Shah Jahan, the Mughal architecture reached new levels of refinement. The most spectacular feature of Taj Mahal is the marble dome that transcends the tomb. The top decorated with a lotus design, which serves to accentuate its height.

The shape of the dome also emphasized by four smaller domes known as the chattris places at the corners. The gilded decoration tops the dome and chattris with the mix of traditional Persian and Indian decorative elements. The tomb is a central focus of the Taj Mahal.

Like most of the Mughal tombs, the basic elements are of Persian in origin. The basic structure is a large multi-chambered cube with a chamfered corner with unequal eight sides.

The four minarets frame the tomb which at each of the chamfered corners. It showcases the smart architecture as the four minarets are inclined a little towards outside to prevent monument from any kind of natural disaster.

The interior chambers of the Taj Mahal reach beyond the traditional decorative elements, with the inlay works are decorated with precious and semi-precious gemstones. The inlay is with delicate detail with twining vines, fruits, and flowers adorned with semi-precious stones.

The complex of the Taj Mahal is set around by a 300-meter Mughal garden. In the center of the garden is a raised marble water tank known as the Hawd al – Kawthar act as a reflecting pool positioned on a north-south axis to reflect the image of the Taj Mahal.

The garden of the Taj Mahal is unusual from other Mughal architecture. In this garden, the Taj Mahal located at the end of the garden compared to other Mughal architecture situated in the center of the garden.

Visiting Taj Mahal

Taj Mahal located in Agra, Uttar Pradesh, which is approximately 200 kilometres from Delhi. It is part of India’s popular Golden Triangle Tourist circuit. Agra is a well-connected rail and road, and the major railway station is Agra Cantt.

Taj Mahal opened from 6 am to 7 pm every day except for Friday, which is closed for prayer. It also opened during full moon night from 8:30 pm to 12:30 pm.

Essay on Taj Mahal: Great art always inspired me, even as a kid. I remember visiting the magnificent Taj Mahal with my family a few years back. Muslim tradition does not allow for much decoration on the graves; hence, Shah Jahan and Mumtaz Mahal’s graves are quite plain. They are kept in an inside chamber. The gardens have walkways and a reflective pool that has running fountains in it.

The greenery includes flowers like roses and daffodils and also encompasses many fruit trees. The Taj Mahal is one of the seven wonders of the world and attracts more than 8 million tourists per year. To avoid overcrowding, a visitor is given a ticket which is valid only for three hours. The lesser recognized parts of the complex are the garden, mosque, and guest house, the latter two being identical red sandstone structures flanking the mausoleum. As political scientist Hilal Ahmed explains , the Taj Mahal has existed as a “secular” space in India since the British colonial period. In this context, the Taj Mahal seemingly has two faces: one of a historical monument and one of a religious space. Describing how those faces connect, Ahmed explains that there are

two kinds of publics—a congregation that offers prayers at the mosque, playing no attention to the central building (at least at that very moment), and a “public,” which stays at the central building and seems to follow the given official meanings of the Taj as a world heritage site.

Ahmed wonders how these publics can be reconciled. If the tomb and the mosque are “inseparable parts” of the complex, the offering of prayer can be interpreted as a “minor,” almost incidental, act. Indeed, the Muslim congregation is only allowed to gather at the mosque for Friday and Eid prayers, in addition to a few other special occasions, he notes. In its prioritized secular role, the Taj Mahal is viewed as a historical building from the past, meant to be preserved but “dead” in the sense that it “has no relation with living communities,” despite the mosque. But is this interpretation of a site identified with a legally protected religious minority ideal or even possible in postcolonial India?

As architect and historian Soumya Dasgupta describes , while the rest of the world may recognize the Taj Mahal as a distinctly Indian building, that same view is not necessarily present within India today. The Taj Mahal was omitted from a tourism brochure produced by the state government of Uttar Pradesh in 2017, and Dasgupta recognizes that moment as “the successful outcome of a long-term, consolidated effort to distort the history of the Taj Mahal as architectural heritage.” He further writes that “emergent myths, propagated through social media, have actually succeeded in formally displacing long-established academic discourse based on archeological evidence and historical studies.” Some of these myths argue that “ the Taj Mahal is a Hindu temple ” or that “the Taj Mahal was built by traitors.”

Other acts of diminishing India’s Islamic heritage have made headlines in recent years. In 2022, India’s National Council of Education Research and Training (NCERT) and Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) acted to remove chapters on Mughal history from history textbooks , greatly limiting the amount of Mughal history students in India would learn. This debate was again in the news in January 2024 when Narendra Modi , India’s current prime minister, opened the newly constructed and controversial Rama Temple in Ayodhya, Uttar Pradesh . Hindus recognize the location of the new temple as the birthplace of Lord Rama . However, it was also the location of Babri Masjid, a sixteenth-century mosque built at the beginning of the Mughal Empire. Babri Masjid was attacked in 1992 by a Hindu nationalist mob, an event resulting in riots that caused at least 2,000 deaths. Multiple court cases played out in the aftermath, and in 2019, the Supreme Court of India granted permission for a new Hindu temple to be constructed on the site , with an alternative plot designated for a future mosque.

But before you visit in the flesh, it's a good idea to get familiar with everything there is to know about the famous "monument of love". From how much tickets cost and where to snap the best picture, to the ideal time of day to arrive, here's how to make the most of your once-in-a-lifetime trip.

It's Pretty Convenient To Visit

Standing tall and proud in the bustling city of Agra, the Taj Mahal is about four hours north of the country's capital, Delhi. Agra is the most populated state in India, which means there are multiple different options for getting here. The fastest route to the Taj Mahal would be to fly. If you're already in India, your best bet is to arrive at Pandit Deen Dayal Upadhyay Airport, in Agra — just over 4 miles from the city center. But if you're coming from outside of the country, the nearest major airport is the Indira Gandhi International Airport in Delhi.

From here, Agra is easy enough to reach by train. You'll want to arrive at Agra Cantt Railway Station, with several superfast, express trains running to and from all the major cities, including Mumbai, Kolkata, and Delhi. If you'd prefer to take the bus, Agra also has a well-developed road network, which you can access from various nearby hubs, including Delhi, Jaipur, and Varanasi. Just make sure you come into the Idgah Bus Stand in Agra — the main bus terminal.

Whichever transport method you choose, you'll need to take a taxi or an auto-rickshaw to reach the Taj Mahal from Agra's center. Be sure to haggle with the driver to avoid paying hefty tourist prices, especially since they won't be able to drop you right outside the Taj Mahal. Vehicles aren't allowed within 500 meters (1640 feet) of the monument because of pollution concerns.

You Can't Visit On Fridays

The building process was started almost immediately after her tragic death and took around 20 years to complete. As well as incredible white marble from the Indian state of Rajasthan, materials for the Taj Mahal were sought from all over the world, including turquoise from Tibet, white sapphire from Sri Lanka, and jade imported from China. Around 1,000 elephants were also thought to be involved in the construction process, transporting these special materials across borders, and helping to lay them in place.

When the Taj Mahal was finally finished in 1653, there were rumors that the thousands of laborers who helped create it had their thumbs chopped off, so that no such monument could ever be built again! Whether this holds true or not, the Emperor was also buried here after he died in 1666, alongside his beloved wife.

You Need To Wear Shoe Covers

A visit to the Taj Mahal can feel a little overwhelming and be a lot to take in. So much so that it may be easy to forget it's also a mausoleum — the final resting place of the Emperor and his true love. It's really important to be respectful of the rules around the monument, including covering your shoes when you go into the burial chamber.

While most temples in India require you to take off your shoes completely, the Taj Mahal simply asks tourists to use shoe covers, which are given to you in a fetching light blue shade, at the ticket booth when you arrive. These are used to prevent dust particles from being tracked into the mausoleum and to keep its marble-clad surfaces as shiny and clean as possible. On your way out of the Taj Mahal, be sure to put these disposable shoe covers, and any rubbish that you have, in the trash cans provided. Sadly, the world-famous monument has suffered from plagues of litter in recent years.

Tickets Cost More For International Tourists

Don't be surprised to see that domestic tourists pay much less for the privilege of gawking at the Taj Mahal. Indian citizens are charged 50 rupees (approximately $0.70), while foreign visitors must pay 1,100 rupees ($15.50). You'll need to part with even more money if you want to go inside the mausoleum itself — there's an additional 200 rupee fee ($2.50), but it's worth it. Plus, the foreign tourists' ticket comes with shoe covers, a water bottle, a map, as well as a bus or golf cart service, which takes you to the nearest gate. Having an expert at your fingertips will really bring the structure to life for you, with stories, and interesting facts you might not hear otherwise. Not to mention be your own personal photographer, and of course, help you with all the best angles for these pictures. There really isn't much information within the complex itself, so it's a bit of a no-brainer. But where do you find the best guide, and how much should it cost?

If you're staying in a hotel nearby, reception staff usually have good contacts with extremely knowledgeable locals. In most cases, they'll be able to offer you a good deal. Or, you could book directly on a local tour guide website, ensuring your hard-earned money goes to a good home. Expect to pay around 2,000 rupees ($25) for a tour guide per day, but if you just want someone to show you around the monument for three hours, you're looking at somewhere near the 1,500 rupee mark ($18). These prices increase dramatically for the pushy kind of guide who lingers outside the Taj Mahal waiting for tourists. So, it goes without saying — book in advance for less stress on the day itself. If you do decide to go with a guide when you arrive, ask them for an approved identity card before you begin.

Where To Take The Best Pictures

The signature shot of the Taj Mahal (the one doing the rounds on social media) is on the approach from the South Gate. You know the one — with a reflection of its world-famous domes in the turquoise fountain, and the majestic white marble of the mausoleum providing the most perfect of backdrops. But it's nearly impossible to get a clear photo here, without other tourists straying into view. So, take your chance and snap away as soon as you arrive — it'll only get busier later on.

If you can't quite get that quintessential shot at this stage, don't be disheartened. There are plenty of other opportunities.
