Create and insert GIFs in PowerPoint

GIFs are a great way to liven up presentation slides and add a dash of humor. with a touch of humor. The animated images grab the attention of your of your audience and add life to your presentation. GIFs are especially popular on social networks because they play automatically and can run in an endless loop. Due to their small file size, they are also ideal for presentations.

1. What are GIFs?

The abbreviation GIF stands for the English term Graphics Interchange format. GIF files can, in contrast to static image representations such as JPG or PNG, generate moving images. These moving images are displayed in the browser or in other output programs as an animation that is constantly repeated. For example, you can display a logo that that moves continuously.

2. Why should you use GIFs?

GIFs and videos have many features in common, yet there are a few differences. For example, GIFs have a small file size, which gives them an advantage over videos. However, each pixel within a GIF can have 256 colors, which makes GIFs appear in lower resolution than videos.

Among the largest providers of GIFs is the online database Giphy . GIFs can be shared and saved here. Giphy offers its own GIF search, which is also integrated into Whatsapp Messenger. Another provider for GIFs is Tenor . Here, you can also find countless GIFs on various topics. Note : However, caution is advised with online providers for GIFs, because in case of a commercial use of GIFs copyright can be violated. A better and also safer alternative is therefore to create your own GIFs.

4. Create GIFs in PowerPoint

GIFs can be easily created in PowerPoint. Note: If you set transitions between slides, they will be exported as well. For a smooth transition between the slides, you can use for example the PowerPoint transition "Morph". This can be found under Transitions > Morph. For the Morph effect, however, you need at least two slides with the same element. In our example we have chosen no transition, so that the Thank You lettering jumps around slightly and looks more alive.

• The export settings can be found on the side. By selecting the box "Make background transparent" you can export a transparent GIF. Otherwise the background of the GIF corresponds to the background of the slide. In addition, you can determine the display duration of the individual slides. Since in our example we want to create a fast moving GIF we have selected a time of 00.10 seconds per slide. Below that you can limit the number of slides to be exported in the GIF.

5. Insert GIFs in PowerPoint

In order to insert an already existing GIF into a presentation, you follow these steps.

• Click Insert and the GIF will be inserted on the selected slide.

GIFs are pretty popular these days, and they are added to blog posts, emails, and landing pages and are commonly used on WhatsApp, Facebook, and other messengers. And these moving images are popular for a reason – they are visually appealing, and with a single GIF, you can say so much!

If someone said people should add GIFs into presentations a few years ago, it would probably cause a burst of laughter. “Ludicrous,” “Out of my mind,” and “Unprofessional” are just some of the words that people would throw at anyone brave enough to add this “middle ground between images and videos.”

But here we are in 2022, and GIFs are more than popular . Of course, let’s not mistake memes with GIFs – memes can be GIFs, but it is not generally accepted to add distracting funny visuals, as you might lose your audience. Instead, you can focus on different moving elements that might navigate your audience towards , let’s say, an interesting infographic.

1. Why should you use GIFs in Google Slides?

Using visuals in presentation has always been tricky, and finding the balance is imperative to outstanding performance deliveries. While designers and elite presenters are well aware of how and when to use GIFs, the same does not apply to newbies or people who haven’t thought about it.

Your audience is hooked for eight seconds – this is their average attention span. If you don’t win it during this period, you’re lost. Static images are boring, and if the image is not super relative to the topic, using a random one will be devastating for you and your Google Slides presentation. On the other hand, adding videos from YouTube is very uncomplicated, but you should also be cautious. Not all videos can summarize things in a couple of seconds.

And here come the GIFs – while they are not perfect, they give you a big enough window to show animations while not stretching too much. Typically, GIFs are just a couple of seconds long, giving you more than enough time to say a few words with your audience listening. At the same time, you can give your listeners time to look at the slide while you are checking your speaker notes .

2. When and how to use GIFs in Google Slides?

If you already know why you should use GIF images, then the next questions might come up in your mind: how and when to use them. After all, you should not add any unnecessary elements.

There are many situations in which it might be a great idea to add GIFs but let’s see some of the best-case scenarios:

👋 As a greeting  – you can add a GIF image to greet your audience. As the old saying goes – there is no second chance to make a first impression. A strong start is an optimal way to set the pace of the presentation.

🎯 As a target  – your presentation has a goal. Whether you would like to sell your product or impress the teacher, you’re more likely to be seen and heard if you add a GIF in the slide which you find most important.

📈 When showing statistics  – most presentations are 80% explanations and 20% statistics. While you cannot overload your audience with numbers in each slide, you can insert a GIF when it matters the most – when showing the most crucial statistics.

⚠️ A slide requiring further attention  – if a slide displays a concerning trend or you would like to voice your opinion about an interesting discussion, you can use a GIF image to capture your audience’s attention.

😜 To lighten up the atmosphere  – if a presentation has too much information, your audience might get distracted. This is when you can add a cheerful GIF to make people smile, and grab their attention again.

Of course, there are many situations that you can find more appropriate to add a GIF. And that’s okay, as long as you add GIFs in moderate numbers. Using too many of them is going to lose the effect, so make sure you insert GIFs only in the slides that you find cornerstone for your presentation.

3. Where to find GIFs for presentation?

3.1. websites with gif galleries.

Since GIF images are very popular these days, you can find plenty of them online. Websites like Tumblr, Tenor and Imgur are great places to find GIFs online. You can also discover plenty of professional GIFs specifically for presentations on Graphic Mama’s website .

3.2. Create your own GIF

Fortunately, there are plenty of options to create a GIF. While this is not the topic of today’s article, we are going to mention a couple of easy, web-based tools to create a GIF. Bear in mind, that you should upload it in the right format (usually, it’s mp4 ).

• Ezgif – is a very good tool that allows you to add a video and optimize it before converting it into a GIF image. You can pick the frame rate, size, etc. It’s a great tool to create a demo for a process or a function you’re presenting.
• Giphy – Giphy is probably the most popular site for memes. You will be surprised by the number of useful GIFs you can find whatsoever. But it’s not all. The tool allows you to create a GIF of your own.
• GIFMaker   – GIF Maker is a bit different than the other tools on the list. Instead of videos, it works with images (up to 300). It’s great to make a “cartoony” GIF this way.

4. How to add a GIF to Google Slides?

Once we have created our GIFs (or find relevant ones), it’s time for the next part – adding them to our Google Slides presentation.

Step 1. Open a presentation

The next step is to create a new presentation or open an already created one.

Step 2. Select a slide

If you have opened the presentation, you have to select the slide you want to add your GIF into.

Step 3. Click on the Insert option from the menu

Now, you have to click on Insert . From the dropdown menu hover over Image.

Step 4. Select an option to import your GIF

At first sight, you can see that there are many options to add your GIF image – from the computer, via a URL, from Drive, Photos, Web Search and Camera. However, you don’t really need more than two options:

• Option 1 : Upload from the computer
• Click on the option “ Upload from computer “.
• Select the folder where your GIF is located.
• Select the GIF image.
• Then, click Open .

• Option 2 : URL
• Find a GIF image from the web.
• Open the image and copy the address.
• Go to Insert->Image->By URL .
• Paste the media address.
• Click on Insert .

Step 5. Position the GIF

After you have done everything, it’s time to position your GIF, so that it creates a good impression on your audience.

GIFs are a great way to entertain your audience but they can also be useful to capture their attention. If you manage to use them wisely, you can not only create a more visually appealing presentation, but you can get your well-deserved applause at the end of it.

When you think of animated GIFs, you’re probably thinking of the silly loops in your group chats. But what if we told you that they also make a riveting addition to your presentations? Used in social media and increasingly on new sites, GIFs can give your presentation a compelling, lively personality. Their popularity inevitably worked its way into the world of PowerPoint presentations since they can also be used for educational purposes, and now we can’t get enough of them. 

What is an animated GIF?

GIF is actually an acronym for graphics interchange format. They are animated image files that loop on repeat, first popularized by the blogging website Tumblr. The GIF format can support nearly 8 bits per pixel and large color palettes, which makes it smaller than JPEGs and therefore faster to load.

Why use GIFs in presentations?

Animated GIFs are a middle ground between images and videos. They add a touch of humor and lightness and can spark up a presentation with their vitality. Their short, looping format is convenient and won’t interrupt or take time. And they often have such a small file size that there isn’t any concern about crashing your PowerPoint or lagging. Using GIFs is ideal as it adds an interactive element to your presentation, such as an animated logo, graph, or even an infographic .

How to find GIFs for presentations?

If you’re interested in using an animated GIF for your presentation but don’t have one ready, you don’t have to worry. You can easily find hundreds, if not thousands, of GIFs online. Googling your keywords plus “GIF” is a great starting point. Websites like GIPHY and Tenor have thousands of GIFs you can browse and search through.

You can also use this search method in PowerPoint. On the slide where you want to add your GIF, find the Insert tab and go to Pictures. Click on Online Photos to find a pop-up webpage that lets you search for Creative Commons images on Bing.

How to insert a GIF in PowerPoint

Once you have a GIF you want to use in your presentation design , you can easily insert it into a PowerPoint. The process is similar to adding regular images but with a couple more steps. 

Starting at the slide where you want to add your GIF file, go to the Insert tab and select Pictures . Find the GIF in your File Explorer and insert it.

To animate it, jump to the Slide Show tab above and select the From Current Slide in the Start Slide Show to have it play.

How to insert a GIF in Google Slides

Similarly, if you want to embed a GIF in Google Slides, you would start by going to the slide you want. Go to Insert and select Images . Click on Upload from computer.

In the pop-up File Explorer, find the GIF you want to add and click on Open .

Adjust and format your GIF accordingly.

How to insert a GIF in Keynote

If you’re using Keynote on a Mac device, you could still add a GIF by dragging a dropping the gif file from your computer into a slide. You could drag and adjust the GIF the way you would an image.

Find the Format button above and switch to the Movie tab.

You can untick Start movie on click to play the GIF as you go on the slide automatically. And in the Repeat menu, you can choose to turn off the loop, so the GIF can only play once and stop.

How to insert a GIF using URLs

Typically, you might find a GIF you like online but not a direct download link. Or maybe you prefer to add it directly to your presentation without downloading. In that case, on PowerPoint, you could add a GIF using its URL. You right-click and select Copy Image Address .

On the slide where you want to insert your GIF, go to Insert , click Pictures , and select This Device .

In the File Explorer, find the Tools menu and select Link to File .

Paste the address into the File name and press Insert .

How to play animated GIFs

Once you insert a GIF in PowerPoint, you will notice a small play icon directly on the GIF itself. You could click on that to play and pause the GIF as you please. Or if you want to guarantee that the GIF plays automatically during your presentation, then you go to the Slide Show tab, find the Start Slide Show section, and select From Current Slide to have the GIF play on a loop as you present.

How to stop a GIF from looping

If an animated GIF keeps replaying, it can distract you and your audience. This is especially true if you are going to stay on a particular slide for a while. You can, however, fix the number of loops a GIF plays so it doesn’t detract from your presentation.

Using the website ezgif.com , you can edit and create GIFs to suit your needs. First, go to the Split page, where you can then select your GIF by either uploading it or linking it. After you upload it, find the Split to frames button below the displayed GIF to divide it into a set of frames.

At the very bottom of the page, below all the frames of the GIF, you will find the Edit animations button. Find the GIF Options box and in the Loop Count box, add the number of loops you would like your GIF to have. Once you’re done, click on Make a GIF! to produce your new GIF. Click on the floppy disk icon to Save . After you’ve checked your GIF, you can add it to your PowerPoint.

Editing a GIF in PowerPoint

Sometimes, you might want to adjust the size or position of a GIF to make it work within a certain layout or perhaps maintain consistency across different slides. Similar to images in PowerPoint, you can adjust, resize, drag, and rotate a GIF to your liking. In the Format tab, you will find a variety of effects, borders, shadows, reflections, or other options to add to the GIF. Note that although formatting options will not affect a GIF’s animation, some effects might cancel it and render it a still image.

Editing a GIF in Google Slides

Google Slides offers several options and tools for you to edit your GIF. These tools allow you to modify everything from the transparency, color, brightness, contrast, shadows, reflections, and transitions of the GIF to adapt it to your presentation’s theme.

Refrain from using too many effects on your GIFs, as it will overwhelm them and come off as unprofessional. 

How to create a GIF?

Do you have an idea for a GIF you’d like to bring to life and hopefully use for your presentation? Luckily, there are ways to create GIFs that don’t require an extensive animation background.

Create a GIF directly in PowerPoint

To create a GIF in PowerPoint, you will need to create a base of several frames first.

To start, insert the intended image which, in this case, could be an icon from the Insert tab Illustrations section.

Then duplicate the slide, and make any changes to your icons in the new slide. It could be a change to its position, color, and size (or aspect ratio ). You could continue this process until you have the number of frames you need to create the animation you want.

Next, go to the Transitions tab, find the Transition to This Slide group, and select the Morph transition for each slide. Still in the Transitions tab, you can also go to Effects Options and add additional effects to your work.

You can check how your animation looks by clicking on the Preview option in Transitions .

Once you’re satisfied, go to File and then Export .

From there, you’ll find Create an Animated GIF . In that window, you can select the gif file size you want and how many seconds you want to spend on each slide. Lastly, click on Create GIF . Wait for the loading bar to complete its progress and congratulations! You’ve made a GIF!

Create a GIF in Photoshop

To create a GIF in Photoshop, you will need a bit more experience and a grasp of the basics of the program. Photoshop can let you turn your own images into animated GIF files. 

To begin, you will need a series of photos that can constitute an animation, think stop motion. Note that all the images should be taken from the same angle and have the same number of pixels. Start by modifying the images to appear as they should in the GIF.

Import images into the Photoshop program through File , then Scripts , then Load Files into Stack . Browse to find your photos, select all, and click Open . They should now appear in a single-layer file, and on the right, you will find several layers, which will become the frames of your GIF.

Then go to the bottom, find Window, and select Timeline . Click on the arrow in the center of the panel and click on Create Frame Animation . This should move the first photo into the timeline. 

Now to turn the layers into animation frames, go to the menu at the top-right corner of the Timeline panel and select Make Frames From Layers . In case your photos are not in order, you can go back to the Timeline menu and click on Reverse Frames .

Under each frame, insert how long each should appear, between 1 and 5 seconds is ideal. You can also adjust the loop, flip, and copy and paste the images. 

However, when you want to copy and paste, make sure to set the playback time beforehand instead of resetting it for every copy. You can copy the images by selecting all the images and clicking Copy Frames in the righthand menu, and then paste them by clicking Paste Frames . In the Paste Frames window, select Paste After Selection so you can reverse the frames. 

Back in the main righthand menu, select Reverse Frames as we did earlier, and once two identical frames appear, delete one to prevent the GIF from lagging. You can now preview what you’ve made by clicking on the play button. 

Check that the infinite loop is set to Forever in the bottom left corner, then save the file as a GIF. Now save it by selecting File , Export , then Save for Web .

Uses for GIFs in PowerPoint presentations

It’s tempting to use GIFs in your presentation; they add a dynamic quality that certainly grabs attention. Fortunately, there are loads of creative and practical ways to incorporate them. For example, you could have animated icons, have them add subtle background motion or a GIF that flips through several images.

You can also use them to clarify or illustrate ideas like showing data changes, explaining metaphors, changing colors to show progress or even showing a mini-tutorial on how to use a feature in an app or website.

Whichever way you choose to use GIFs, it guarantees added value to your presentation by amplifying your ideas and infusing your PowerPoint with energy.

Animated GIFs are a refreshing addition to break away from the typical presentation formula. Easy, fun, and eye-catching, they are a unique format that gives life to your slides and will ensure that you stand out. Cut to the chase and liven up your presentations with movement that strings your audience along.

If you decide to add animated GIFs to your presentation ,  your audience will be delighted that you took the time to evolve beyond static slides in favor of slides that move.

If you want to produce GIFs for an upcoming presentation, you will be happy to know that GIFs are relatively easy to create. While there are a variety of ways to make GIFs, here are a few simple options that will help you create impressive GIFs quickly. 

1. RecordIt: Screencast Gifs

RecordIt is a wonderful option  if you want to create screencast GIFs to show your audience how to do something on their computers. As you can see in the GIF below, RecordIt is easy to use; you can master this web app in a few minutes or less.

I can personally vouch for the effectiveness and simplicity of this option because I use RecordIt often to create GIFs for blog posts.

3. Convert Your SlideShare Into A GIF

If you want to embed a GIF version of a SlideShare presentation into another presentation, GIFdeck makes that possible. You are probably wondering, why would I ever want to do that ? There are a variety of ways you could use this technique to enhance your presentation. For example, if you plan to have an intermission during your presentation, you could leave on the screen during the intermission a slide that features a GIF version of another presentation so audience members who opt to stay in the room during the intermission can continue to learn or be entertained by your presentation.

While embedding a GIF version of a SlideShare presentation into another presentation is a fun way to use GIFdeck , here are other ways you can use this tool:

1. Use GIF in your emails to make them more interesting and increase CTR . Many email clients give GIF an auto play functionality. Gmail supports it as inline playable format.

4. Introducing PowerPoint Designer and Morph

If you are looking for another, non-GIF option for adding movement to your PowerPoint slides, you will love the new PowerPoint feature, Morph.

Here is what  GeekWire says about this new Microsoft PowerPoint feature:

Morph lets users easily create robust animations by moving objects around the slide. Instead of forcing people to look for small changes as you go between slides, you can quickly animate the changes. While this can be as simple as changing the size of an on-screen object, users can also build more movie-like presentations.

To create the animation, users need to duplicate a slide, then just move objects to the next position you want them in. After selecting the Morph transition, PowerPoint will then fill in the frames between those placements as you go though your slide. Check out the video above for Morph in action.

Raise your hand if you’ve had to sit through presentations where you struggled to pay attention because slide after slide looked the same. I know I can’t be the only one with my hand raised right now.

When you’re delivering a sales deck, the last thing you want is your prospect to be bored or disengaged, and keeping your prospects engaged and focused can be especially challenging in a virtual environment when everyone is working remotely.

GIFs are a great way to add compelling visual elements to your sales presentations to keep the audience engaged and support your talking points in a fun, creative way. Here are some of our favorite work-appropriate GIFs to include in your next presentation.

The Best GIFs to Use in Sales Presentations

Sales conversations often revolve around money. Whether you are discussing how much money your prospect wants to spend, or how much money you can save them by switching to your product, address the financial conversations head-on with this visual.

Remember, the goal is to keep your audience engaged with the material you’re presenting. This classic GIF can be a good way to break up long stretches of information, keeping the prospect’s precious time front and center.

17. Summing Things Up

When it’s time for your pitch to wind down, sum things up with this GIF.

18. Taking Questions

Your meeting is about to wrap, and it’s time to take questions. This GIF is a bit more entertaining than a bland slide that just says Q&A and just might get the song “Independent Women" stuck in your head.

19. It’s Business

Add an animated GIF to a slide

A .gif file can be either a still image or an animated image. If you have animated GIF, this article describes how to insert it on a slide.

If you have a GIF that is a still image, it can't be turned into an animated GIF.

You can add an animated GIF (or meme ) to a PowerPoint slide as you would with any other picture file.

You can insert a GIF file that is stored on your computer hard disk or in OneDrive.

Select the slide that you want to add the animated GIF to.

In the Insert tab of the ribbon, click Pictures .

In the Insert Picture From  dialog box, navigate to the location of the animated GIF you want to add.

Select the file, and then click Insert .

Find animated GIFs on the web

You can also search the web for GIFs by using Insert Online Pictures or Insert Clip Art , depending on your version of PowerPoint. On the Insert tab of the ribbon, choose Insert Online Pictures or Insert Clip Art . Type "animated gif" in the search box.

Determine how many times the animation loops

Animated GIFs often loop repeatedly without end. But you can change that by editing the GIF before you add it to your PowerPoint slide.

Once you have the GIF file saved to your computer, a relatively easy way to edit the GIF is with the online editor called ezgif.com.

Go to the GIF frame extractor (or "Splitter") on ezgif.com .

Under Upload image from your computer , click the Browse button to locate the GIF file on your computer. Select the file and then select the Open button.

Click Upload!

The animated GIF appears on the web page, followed by facts about the file size and dimensions, similar to this picture:

Click the Split to frames button below the animated GIF.

After a moment, a frame-by-frame breakdown is shown on the web page.

Below the many frames (scroll downward on the page as needed), there's a blue Edit animation button.

Click Edit animation .

The set of frames appears again, with a Skip , Copy , and Delay option for each frame. Below the frames are more options, including one for Loop Count .

Under GIF options , in the Loop Count box, type a numeral representing the number of times you want the GIF to play.

Click Make a GIF!

After a few moments, the revised GIF is shown below the Make a GIF! button. Below the revised GIF is a row of buttons, and the far right one is named save .

Click save to copy the revised GIF back to your computer.

Depending on your browser, the file will be saved to your Downloads folder or you'll be allowed to specify where you want the GIF file to be copied to on your computer.

With the revised GIF on your computer, you're ready to insert it on a slide in PowerPoint.

Make an animated GIF from a slide show

Animate text or objects

You can add an animated GIF to a PowerPoint slide as you would with any other picture file. You can insert a GIF file that is stored on your computer hard disk or in cloud storage (such as OneDrive).

On Home tab of the ribbon, under Insert , click Picture > Picture from File .

Navigate to the location of the animated GIF you want to add, make sure the file name ends with a .gif extension, select the file, and then click Insert .

To play the animation, select the Slide Show  menu and then select Play from Current Slide .

You can add an animated GIF to a slide by using PowerPoint for the web, just as you would with any other picture file, but the GIF won't play when the presentation is viewed in Slide Show. PowerPoint for the web can't play animated GIFs.

If playing GIFs is a feature you'd like to see in PowerPoint for the web, we encourage you to suggest features by clicking Help > Feedback > I have a suggestion . 

Insert a picture from your computer on a slide

Select the slide where you want to insert an image.

On the Insert tab, select Picture .

Browse to the picture you want to insert, select it, and then click Open .

After the picture is on your slide, you can resize it and move it wherever you want.

In order to insert a GIF into PowerPoint, you first need to download a GIF onto your device. Let’s get into it:

• Head to Giphy . Using the search bar, search for the type of GIF you’re looking for. We opted for “thank you” GIFs.

2. Once you've found a GIF you like, click on it to load it.

3. Once the GIF has loaded, right-click on it. On the pop-up menu that appears, click on “Save Image As…” to save it to your device. The GIF will begin to download to your device.

4. Once the GIF has successfully downloaded onto your device, open PowerPoint and click on the slide where you want to insert the GIF.

5. Head to the "Insert" tab in the ribbon at the top of the screen.

6. Click on the "Pictures" section of the ribbon.

7. In the "Insert Pictures From" tab, select "This Device..." .

8. Locate the GIF on your device and select it. The GIF will be inserted into your slide. And that's it!

Note: On the right side of your screen, you will see a “Designer” tab where you can choose your preferred design for how your GIF is displayed on your slide.

To insert a GIF directly into PowerPoint, follow these steps:

• Click on the slide where you want to insert the GIF.
• Click on the "Insert" tab in the ribbon at the top of the screen.
• Click on the "Pictures" button in the "Images" section of the ribbon.
• In the "Insert Picture" window that appears, click on the "Online Pictures" button.
• In the "Insert Pictures" window, type "GIF" into the search bar and hit enter.
• Select the desired GIF by clicking on it, and then click on the "Insert" button. The GIF will be inserted into your slide.

You can access these features by double-clicking or right-clicking on your GIF and selecting “Format Options” and/or “More Styles” from the pop-up menu.

If you require more extensive editing , you have to edit the GIF before inserting it into PowerPoint by using an online GIF editor such as GIF frame extractor (or "Splitter") on ezgif.com .

What file format should my GIF be in? GIFs should be saved in .gif file format in order to be inserted into PowerPoint.

Can I resize my GIF after I've inserted it into PowerPoint? Yes, resize your GIF by clicking and dragging on the corners of the image.

Can I add animations or transitions to my GIF in PowerPoint? Yes, you can, add animations or transitions to your GIF by clicking on the "Animations" tab in the ribbon and selecting the desired effect.

Can I play my GIF on a loop? Animated GIFs typically repeat continuously in a loop, but you can ensure that it does by setting your GIF to play on a loop. Click on the "Animations" tab, select the GIF, click on the "Playback" tab, and select "Loop Until Stopped" in the "Loop Options" section.

Can I add text or other elements to my GIF in PowerPoint? Yes, add text or other elements to your GIF by inserting a text box or other object onto the slide and positioning it over the GIF.

Whether you're using a GIF for educational or entertainment purposes, adding this dynamic element can enhance the visual appeal of your presentation.
