Degree Options and Certification

We offer three degree options to meet the needs of incoming students.

MA in Physical Education (Professional)

Designed for students who already hold a valid New York State initial/provisional teacher certification in physical education and will obtain professional certification after completion.

Designed for students who already have initial teacher certification in an area other than physical education.

MA in Physical Education (Pre-Service)

Designed for students without prior teacher certification.

Certification

Successful graduates of this program are eligible for New York State Teacher Certification in Physical Education. New York State Department of Education requires all graduates to sit for the Content Specialty Test in Physical Education. Some coursework may count toward additional areas of teacher certification.

We offer three-degree options to meet the needs of incoming students:

The program gave me the chance to realize my dream of becoming a physical education teacher, helped get me out of my comfort zone by exposing me to public speaking, and gave me the social and professional tools to excel in my PE career.

Exceptional Hands-On Learning

At Adelphi, we believe hands-on experience is key to setting our students up for future career success. Students receive their hands-on experience through internships and student teaching placements. With 130 intern hours split between elementary and secondary schools, students will help PE teachers conduct class. Additionally, those students in the pre-service track will split 16 weeks between elementary and secondary placements, full time, five days per week, working with a cooperating teacher and a supervising professor from the University gaining firsthand experience. Placements occur both in the boroughs of New York City and on Long Island.

Applicants must submit the following:

  • Graduate application and $60 fee
  • Online survey completed by two recommenders
  • Personal essay
  • Official transcripts from all prior institutions and proof of bachelor’s degree from an accredited four-year institution
  • Résumé (preferred)

All teacher certification candidates must take and pass New York State Teacher’s Certification Examinations (NYSTCE) required for their particular area of certification which includes the Content Specialty Test in Physical Education.

This course will prepare students to effectively use current theory and administrative techniques to design and implement appropriate physical activity programs. Emphasis is placed on developing and implementing program plans.

Physical Activity Program Development

The aim of this course is to examine models and current research related to curriculum and program design in physical activity disciplines. This course will provide students with skills that will enable them to interpret, critique, evaluate, justify, and develop physical activity curricula and programs.

Leadership in Physical Activity and Sport

This course will assist students in developing knowledge and skills related to leadership in physical activity and sport settings. This course will provide students with the leadership skills that will enable them to examine, evaluate, create, and implement effective physical activity and sport programs.

Research Methods in Sport Performance

Students who complete this course will gain the skills and knowledge to engage in meaningful research within sport and physical activity settings. Topics covered will include methods to design and implement effective quantitative and qualitative research projects in physical activity and sport settings.

Predictive Sport Performance Analytics

Using quantitative data collection and analysis procedures, students will gain the skills and knowledge necessary to carefully analyze sport performance in an objective and data based manner. Students will also learn to use data to make effective recommendations and decisions to improve future sport performance at both the individual and team levels.

Analysis and Supervision in Sport and Physical Activity

This course prepares students to analyze and supervise teaching, training, and quality in physical activity disciplines.

Professional Issues in Physical Activity Disciplines

This course will assist students in understanding professional issues and concerns that are inherent parts of physical activity professions and to apply that understanding to professional participation and service contributions. Students will analyze and evaluate online professional information, critically analyze physical activity problems, critique and debate complex ethical problems within the field of physical activity, and articulate a sound philosophy for physical activity leadership.

Teaching and Motivation for Physical Activity Leaders

This course will lead students through the exploration of sport psychology research, particularly in areas that connect psychology and physical activity behavior. Students will connect theory to practice by integrating research and theory into logical coaching and teaching frameworks. Additional content will focus on how training actions impact performance and motivation.

Analysis of Research in Physical Activity Disciplines

The purpose of this course is to introduce students to various streams of research in physical activity domains and help them understand and critically analyze the quality of that research and its influence on professional activity.

Project in Lieu of Thesis

The project in lieu of thesis is a project or activity that makes a significant contribution to the field(s) associated with physical education and human performance fields. Project ideas will be conceptualized and organized by the student and the course instructor. There is no set format and guidelines for each individual project will be determined by the nature of the topic and the guidance of the instructor. Students will be guided toward project completion over two semesters.

Advanced Strategies and Tactics of Sport Performance

Students completing this course will analyze, evaluate, and create strategic and tactical methods designed to produce success within sports settings.

Sport Promotion and Communication

Sport Promotion and Communication is designed to provide students with the knowledge and skills to effectively promote sport and physical activity programs using a variety of direct and indirect communication tools and procedures.

Admission Requirements

To be considered for admission to UWF’s online Sports Performance and Coaching in Movement Sciences and Health program, you must have an undergraduate degree from an accredited institution.

How to Apply

To apply for admission to this program, you first need to submit an application for graduate admission (plus a $30 application fee) and be admitted to the University of West Florida. Review application deadlines . In addition, you must submit:

  • Submit official transcripts confirming a bachelor’s degree from an institution whose accrediting agency is included on the list of UWF approved accrediting agencies
  • Undergraduate Institutional GPA as well as GPA in your senior year/major
  • Letter of intent describing reasons for applying to this program and associated career goals
  • Three professional references
  • Academic Preparation as demonstrated by undergraduate degree major

Costs & Financial Aid

Tuition waivers cover up to 90% of the non-resident portion of your tuition. They are available to non-Florida residents (including international students) admitted to online programs and registered for online courses in active pursuit of that degree or certificate. You must pay all other assessed tuition and fees. Review Tuition Waiver Information to learn more.

Time to completion varies by student, depending on individual progress. Fees are charged per semester unless otherwise noted. This program takes up to 24 months to complete, depending on course availability.

Alabama Differential Out-of-State Tuition

Residents of Alabama are eligible for Alabama Differential Tuition, a reduced out-of-state tuition rate. As an athletic coach, you’ll work to maximize your team’s performance and strategize how to win each game. You’ll analyze the strengths and weaknesses of individuals and teams to form game plans. You’ll also foster skill development and motivate players to succeed.  The median salary for coaches at higher education institutions and professional schools is $45,977 a year.

Fitness Trainers and Instructors

Fitness trainers help their clients adopt a healthier lifestyle by connecting them to the proper resources on nutrition, weight control and lifestyle issues. They develop exercise plans for their clients, monitor how those exercises are being performed and adapt programs as needed according to a client’s progress. They also provide alternative training options for varying levels of ability and skill. The median salary for fitness trainers is $40,700 a year.

Fitness and Wellness Directors

Fitness and wellness directors manage health and fitness centers. In this role, you’re responsible for using your education and research to create programs that clients enjoy and attend. You’ll hire, train and manage staff while overseeing the budget and keeping an eye on the bottom line. The average salary for a director of fitness and wellness is $63,055.

Master's in Physical Education

Health & Physical Education offers a master of science in education degree with emphasis areas in adapted physical education, coaching education and curriculum and Instruction. 

Adapted Physical Education

This emphasis of the master's degree program is designed to further enhance students' knowledge about teaching children and youth of all abilities in physical activity settings. In addition to adapted physical education coursework, enrolled students will be offered numerous hands-on activities working with children with disabilities in real-world settings. Those completing this program, and required practicum experiences, will be eligible to sit for the Adapted Physical Education National Standards (APENS) exam and qualify for Certified Adapted Physical Educators (CAPE) certification. This program culminates with a master's thesis project where students conduct original research pertaining to physical activity for youth with disabilities.

The Coaching Education emphasis focuses on theories and practices that can be used to promote athletes' health, wellbeing, and performances at different levels. Most of our students in the master's program have either some playing or coaching/teaching experiences, sometimes both, which makes the class discussion resourceful and enjoyable. Research-based articles and relevant practices are commonly discussed in classes, and the students have the option to choose either conducting a thesis study or completing an internship as the culminating event.

Curriculum and Instruction

Initial virginia licensure in health & physical education optional.

The Curriculum & Instruction Emphasis (M.S.Ed in Physical Education) focuses on theories and practices related to student learning and wellbeing in K-12 contexts. Students have two options for this emphasis area, either research-based to complete a thesis study at the end, or practice-based to complete a student teaching at the end to acquire a Virginia teaching licensure for health and physical education. Through advising, students have to choose to an option to meet their needs.

  • Personal, community health, and nutrition
  • Teaching dance, individual, and team sports
  • Curriculum development and planning
  • Motor development and learning
  • Health and fitness education

Research-based option

Research option has no internship, designed for those interested in advancing their careers and/or with aspiration to pursue doctoral education later, no Praxis Test score needed.

Research-based articles and professional articles are commonly used in the classes. Many of our students are currently working in schools as teaching assistants or part time/fulltime teachers, which provides rich context and meaningful information through class discussions.

Practice-based option

Initial virginia licensure in health & physical education.

Licensure option requires internship and more coursework in order to meet the Health and Physical Education teaching licensure (K-12) requirements set by Virginia Department of Education, in addition to Praxis Tests.  No PE background? No problem  for this option!

Physical Education (Online)

The demanding schedules of physical education teachers and coaches can make pursuing a master’s degree a challenge. An online master’s program offers the flexibility and convenience to balance work, family and your continuing education. 

There are two separate paths, each with their own curriculum and outcomes:

Path 1, Physical Education - Professional Certification: The program is designed for students with initial New York State certification in Physical Education who must meet the state requirements for professional certification. >  Only NYS certified, or pending certification, Physical Education teachers are eligible for this path

Additionally, a number of health courses are offered so that you can apply the health knowledge to a future job or use the health credits  for health teaching certification through your state. You will complete an electronic portfolio as a culmination of your degree including a mission statement, resume, sample lesson plans, and assignments associated with the program.

In both paths, you will research cutting edge topics in physical education instruction and learn to apply them to a physical education classroom setting. Coursework does not repeat information from undergraduate learning, but rather extends your study to the next level of learning.

While the program does not provide health education certification directly, you can take your undergraduate and graduate health credits to your respective state for health certification approval. You will complete a physical education electronic portfolio as a culmination of your degree including a mission statement, resume, sample lesson plans, and assignments associated with the program.

Our program includes two teaching licensure programs, and we also offer eight master’s in physical education concentrations, as well as a graduate certificate in professional tennis management. Georgia Southern University’s fully online Physical Education graduate program emphasizes current pedagogical thinking, research, and teacher effectiveness in physical education to produce instructors who can integrate research and theory into teaching practice.

The program is designed for those students who currently have a clear renewable teaching certificate in Health and Physical Education. If a potential student does not have a clear renewable teaching certificate in Health and Physical Education, then the Master of Arts in Teaching (MAT) graduate program may be for you.

If you are a bachelor’s degree student interested in the Master of Science in Kinesiology, Physical Education concentration program, you may be eligible for an accelerated bachelor’s to master’s (ABM) program. ABM programs allow you to begin graduate studies in the senior year of your bachelor’s degree so you can accelerate completion of a graduate degree. You’ll earn both a bachelor’s and a graduate degree faster. And since any graduate courses taken as an undergraduate are billed at the undergraduate tuition rate, you’ll save money too.

Financial Assistance

Various forms of financial assistance are available through the  Office of Financial Aid . In addition, graduate assistantships, which include teaching in the Physical Activity Lifestyle program, teaching the laboratory portion of Human Anatomy and Physiology, working in University Athletics, and/or assisting with faculty research, are available to qualified applicants. Clinical Internship/Practicum Experience Update

Many of the clinical programs offered by the Waters College of Health Professions require a clinical internship or practicum experience to fulfill degree requirements. Pursuant to the University's legal agreements, participants in clinical experiences are required to abide by the workplace rules of the clinical site. The University is aware of recent federal requirements that would mandate vaccination against COVID-19 for those working in certain settings, including health care. At this time, we expect that these new requirements may significantly impact our ability to locate a placement for students who remain unvaccinated. As always, WCHP will continue to make every effort to place students at clinical sites. However, please be aware that we may be unable to locate a site to accept unvaccinated students, which may cause a delay or inability to progress and complete the program of study.

Are you a teaching professional with a demanding schedule, who needs to balance work and family with higher education? The Physical Education Teacher Education (PETE) degree is offered fully online and is a part-time program for teachers seeking professional development and career advancement. Skills you will learn include: designing and implementing comprehensive school activity programs; creating evidence-based curriculum and instructional models in physical education and sport; integrating instructional technology in the gymnasium, classroom and sports arena; and implementing physical activity programs for school-aged children.

The curriculum is aligned with advanced teaching standards (Professional Knowledge, Practice and Leadership) established by the Society for Health and Physical Educators.

The online courses in this program are taught by faculty who are nationally and internationally recognized leaders in their fields. This is a non-licensure program in West Virginia, however, and does not provide initial teaching certification in physical education as it is based on national advanced teaching standards. Prior to enrolling in this program, students who are seeking a pathway to an initial teaching license are encouraged to check with their state departments of education to see if the plan of study meets their requirements for an alternative certification pathway (see the WVDE Alternative Certification Program as an example).

The Physical Education Teacher Education degree from the College of Applied Human Sciences prepares teaching professionals to lead healthy and active schools or to work with students in community recreation centers or sports arenas. All students will complete a 30-hour curriculum that incorporates research methodology, instructional technology, assessment standards, motor development for special populations, principles of effective teaching, school physical activity, and supervision and advocacy. The unique sequencing of theoretical courses and applied labs allows teachers to apply concepts immediately with learners in their own K-12 classrooms.

Online Physical Education Teacher Education Admission Requirements

Applicants should hold a baccalaureate degree with a cumulative GPA of at least 2.75 on a 4.0 scale. They should have access to youth (children and adolescents) in school-based physical education or community physical activity/sports settings throughout the duration of the program for course assignments and follow-up application tasks.

Students may be admitted provisionally with a GPA of 2.75 or lower; however, provisional students must earn a 3.0 in the first 9 hours of coursework to continue in the program.

"Our priority is that our graduate students can take and apply the knowledge and skills developed across the curriculum back to their local K-12 schools for the benefit of the learners in their classrooms. Courtney exemplifies that approach."

Hudnall, from White Sulphur Springs, W. Va., explains a typical day at school.

"I arrive at 7:15 a.m. to prep the gymnasium for an exciting lesson and greet students in the hall. My first class starts at 8 a.m. I take attendance, we do warm up laps to music and play a high energy game to get the heart pumping,” she said. “Then we get into the lesson/skill that I am teaching. I instruct K-5 all day for 45 minutes each, with my last class ending at 2:45."

Hudnall suggests that if incoming students are uncertain about whether to enroll in the PETE online program, they should take the leap.

"I learned so much. I was able to incorporate things I learned right away. The professors are extremely helpful and want to see that you have an understanding and succeed," she said.

As a true supporter of sports, Hudnall says that she is a huge soccer fan.

"WVU Women’s Soccer team is my favorite."

Hudnall was nominated for the award by school staff. After reviewing applications, the Board of Education selected winners for Elementary Teacher of the Year, Secondary Teacher of the Year and an overall Greenbrier County Teacher of the Year. Hudnall plans to submit additional information to be considered for the West Virginia Teacher of the Year award.

Physical Education (M.S.T.) Program

The M.S.T. program is designed for people interested in teaching physical education who do not possess a teaching certificate or who hold an initial certification in another subject area. Coursework is informed by the highest standards of the Society of Health and Physical Educators (SHAPE), Adapted Physical Education National Standards (APENS) and the New York State Learning Standards in Physical Education.

Two Certificate Tracks

Two options include Track A for students who are not certified (55 credit hours) and Track B for students who are previously certified in another subject area (43 credit hours). Beyond graduate-level core courses in physical education, both tracks provide the knowledge and skills that integrate physical education theory with hand-on practice.

Students sit for a comprehensive exam to complete a culminating master's thesis. Students in Track A, the initial certificate program, will student teach for one semester after their comprehensive exam.

  • Official transcripts from all institutions of higher learning attended to be forwarded directly to the SUNY Cortland Graduate Admissions Office Note: candidates for admission must present evidence of bachelor's degree conferral prior to the start of their academic program.
  • A resume, which must include the contact information for three references. Recommendation letters will be requested through our  system. One of those contacts must be a public school employee (submitted online with the application). The recommendation form is available through the application.

Department of Curriculum and Instruction

Pursue a Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) in Physical Education Teacher Education (PETE) to prepare for a career as an educational researcher. As one of only 20 PETE doctoral degree-granting institutions in the country, this unique program takes a multidisciplinary and translational approach to developing an empirically-based physical education curriculum and comprehensive school physical activity programs in and around schools. Through this program students gain experience in research, teacher education, coaching, and applied physical activity leadership.

Dissertation (Minimum 6 hours)

Students are required to continuously register for at least three credits of dissertation once they have  advanced to candidacy . 

You must register in X99W (399, 699 or 999W) in each semester of candidacy until you graduate.

Please Note:  Students receiving fellowships, assistantships, or other financial aid, may be required to take 9 hours of dissertation credit each semester.

Physical Education Degrees & Certification

A physical education degree can be the first step in a rewarding, lifelong career for those with a passion for teaching and helping shape students’ lifestyles. The first step to a career in physical education is to get a degree. Since a bachelor’s degree is typically the minimum requirement for becoming employed as a PE teacher, the majority of programs are found at the bachelor’s level. PE programs are often grouped with kinesiology, exercise science, or health studies degrees. Many bachelor’s in education programs offer a focus (also called specialization, concentration, specialty, or emphasis) in physical education, preparing teachers to become certified or endorsed in that area.

Like most other teachers, physical education teachers must become certified educators in their state before they can begin working in the public school system. While about 75% of all schools in the US are public and require certification, some private schools may not require certification for teachers. 2

The table below shows the best value schools offering a program in physical education at the undergraduate and/or graduate level. All of the schools on our list are not-for-profit and have an undergraduate graduation rate of 75% and above and an undergraduate net price of less than $20,000. For comparison, we have also included the cost per credit hour for graduate programs at applicable schools, the programs offered, and US News & World Report rankings. While we include in-state cost per credit hour, be sure to check with each school because most schools charge more for out-of-state students.

Best Value Schools with Online Physical Education Programs

To help you find an online physical education degree that is right for you, we have put together the following table using the same criteria as above, except the schools below have a graduation rate of above 65% at the undergraduate level and an undergraduate net price below $21,000. We have included degrees offered at the graduate level only (since very few undergraduate degrees in phys ed are offered online) along with US News & World Report rankings, percentage of faculty with tenure, and cost per in-state graduate credit hour. Keep in mind that some schools do charge more for out-of-state students, even for their online programs.

Physical education degree programs are typically designed for those who wish to teach physical education, coaching, and related subjects in grades K-12. Certain degree programs may also prepare students to teach physical education at the adult level. Graduates may become teaching-certified for entry-level careers or pursue graduate study in physical education or other education subject areas. The National Association for Sport and Physical Education (NASPE) recommends that PE students take health-related courses and obtain any health certifications available to them to increase their marketability and ability to teach in the gym and the classroom.

A bachelor’s degree in physical education comprises 120 credit hours, while a master’s degree is typically around 60 credit hours. To be admitted to a bachelor’s-level PE program, students typically need a minimum GPA and standardized test (ACT or SAT) scores. The curriculum for a physical education degree program involves learning about the human body, health, fitness, and education theory to prepare to teach students with diverse needs and abilities. Traditional Programs

Ohio state university.

Ohio State University’s (OSU) College of Education and Human Ecology offers a Bachelor of Science in Education (BSEd) in Sports Coaching, Recreation, and Physical Education with an optional specialization in Physical Education Teacher Education that leads to becoming a licensed physical education teacher in preschool through grade 12. The program focuses on how to adapt physical education resources for children and adolescents at the elementary, middle, and high school levels as well as students with disabilities. Graduates will be able to help children develop their motor skills from a young age and encourage them to build a healthy lifestyle including physical activity. Field experience working in physical education in schools of all levels is required, and in the on-campus adapted activities lab, students will be able to work with children with disabilities. Core requirement courses include Concepts of Fitness and Wellness, Mental Performance for Youth Sports, Coaching Effectiveness, and Sociocultural Issues in Sport, Recreation & Physical Education. A minimum GPA of 2.75 is required for admission into the major and 120 total hours are required to graduate.

Purdue University

Purdue University’s Department of Health and Kinesiology (HK) offers a Bachelor of Arts (BA) in Health and Kinesiology (which recently replaced the Bachelor of Science (BS) in Athletic Training) that prepares students to attend graduate school or professional school or to be sport instructors, personal trainers, and fitness coordinators. The BA uses experiential learning such as a hands-on lab, a departmental study abroad opportunity, and research experience with professors. Coursework is taken in chemistry, physics, biomechanics, sport and exercise psychology, exercise physiology, applied clinical anatomy, and public health studies. Students may choose an optional concentration in Clinical Exercise Physiology, which replaced the school’s Applied Exercise and Health degree, and prepares students to be entry-level exercise specialists and/or pass the American College of Sports Medicine (ACSM) Certified Exercise Physiologist (EP-C) exam or the National Strength and Conditioning Association (NSCA) Certified Strength and Conditioning Specialist (CSCS) Exam. Purdue also offers a master’s degree and a PhD in health and kinesiology.

University of Texas at San Antonio

The University of Texas at San Antonio awards the Bachelor of Science (BS) in Kinesiology with a Physical Education concentration to students who complete its 120-credit-hour program. Graduates obtain the skills and knowledge necessary to obtain certification in teaching physical education from pre-kindergarten to grade 12. Courses in individual activities, team sports, motor development, and exercise physiology provide students with a firm foundation in kinesiology for physical education instruction. In the final semester of study, students complete a student teaching field experience of full-day teaching in the certificate area sought, supplemented by seminars in teaching practice and related issues. Qualified students may enter the Department Honors program for opportunities for advanced study. A 15-credit hour certificate in Athletic Coaching can be added to the standard curriculum for students interested in coaching careers. The department also offers 18-credit hour minors in community health and wellness.

University of Vermont

At the University of Vermont, the Department of Education offers a teacher education program in physical education culminating in a Bachelor of Science in Education (BSEd). The 120-credit program requires coursework in general education as well as classes like Kinesiology, Exercise Physiology, Sport in Society, Exercise and Sport Science, Motor Skill Learning and Control, and the Philosophy of Coaching. The specialty courses are focused on “Moving and Learning” to provide a background to the field and students learn teaching skills that will allow them to work effectively with children of all ages. The program qualifies graduates to become licensed teachers in PreK through grade 12. The program includes real-world laboratory experiences in schools, and students can choose to pursue a concentration in Exercise and Sport Science and a Coaching minor. The University of Vermont also offers a Post-Baccalaureate Teacher Preparation (PBTP) program for students who already have a bachelor’s degree and wish to become licensed as PreK-12 physical education teachers. Undergraduate minors in Coaching and Sports Management are also offered.

West Virginia University

West Virginia University (WVU) offers a Bachelor of Science (BS) in Physical Education and Kinesiology through its School of Sport Sciences. This degree program provides students with a comprehensive skill set in physical education and leads to state-level teaching certification at the elementary and/or secondary levels in both physical education and health education. Graduates may also find career opportunities in student health and athletic coaching. The professionally-oriented coursework includes learning across developmental levels and differing student populations for a well-rounded understanding of physical education. Courses are sequenced to provide an integrated learning experience. Students may also be interested in adding one of the school’s physical education minors to their degree plan, such as Adventure Sports Leadership, Athletic Coaching, Group Fitness, and Personal Training. The program is accredited by the National Council for Accreditation of Teacher Education (NCATE).

Online and Hybrid Programs

George mason university.

George Mason University’s School of Kinesiology offers a fully-online Master of Education (M.Ed.) in Curriculum and Instruction with a concentration in Physical Education. Designed for current teachers in health and physical education with at least one year of experience, this M.Ed. degree includes core courses such as Education and Culture; Designing and Assessing Teaching and Learning; and Inquiry into Practice as well as concentration courses in Research Design and Statistical Reasoning; Curriculum and Assessment in Physical Education; and Mentoring and Supervising in Physical Education. Electives are also offered in Instructional Design; Advanced Exercise Physiology; Exercise and Sport Psychology; and more. A total of 30 credits are required for the degree, 12 of which are core courses and 18 of which are concentration courses. Coursework in the program is aligned with the National Board for Professional Teaching Standards (NBPTS) and is designed to prepare future leaders in physical education.

Indiana Wesleyan University

Indiana Wesleyan University’s Transition to Teaching (TTT) program offers two pathways of interest to prospective physical education teachers: an endorsement in Physical Education or Health Education in grades P-12. To be eligible for admission, students must already hold a bachelor’s degree in any field. Out-of-state candidates should check with their state’s board of education to see if this degree will meet certification requirements since the built-in licensure is for Indiana. All courses take place online, though students must complete field experiences and a student teaching semester within the state of Indiana. The program is designed to be completed in 18 to 24 months. Courses in the program include Educational Psychology and Diversity for Secondary Educators; Assessment and Learning Processes in the Secondary Classroom; and Secondary Teaching Methods and Resources. All education programs at Indiana Wesleyan University are accredited by the National Council for the Accreditation of Teacher Education (NCATE).

State University of New York College at Cortland

The Physical Education Department at the State University of New York College at Cortland (SUNY Cortland) offers several programs in physical education, two of which are offered in a hybrid or online format. SUNY Cortland’s Master of Science in Education (MSEd) in Physical Education Leadership (PEL) is available in a fully-online format, aside from one two-week summer requirement that must be taken on campus. The MSEd in PEL prepares leaders and advocates for change in the profession and future physical educators employed in K-12 programs in New York and beyond. The program also prepares graduates for certification in New York State. SUNY Cortland also offers an MSEd program in Physical Education (PEC) with concentrations in Adapted Physical Education (ADPE) and Coaching Pedagogy (COAP); only the Coaching Pedagogy concentration can be taken in a hybrid format. The COAP concentration is taken over three consecutive summers and emphasizes coaching and teaching physical education, research methods, and the application of technology. Related on-campus traditional programs include a Master of Science for Teachers (MST) in Physical Education and a Bachelor of Science in Education (BSEd) in Physical Education with concentrations in Adapted Physical Education and Outdoor Adventure Education.

University of Arkansas

The University of Arkansas offers an online Master of Education (M.Ed.) in Physical Education that is designed for currently certified teachers. This 100% online teacher education program can be completed in two years by taking two courses each semester. The program is designed to provide advanced training in health and physical education, with courses such as Professional Issues in Physical Education and Sport; Supervision in Physical Education; and Sport Skill Assessment and Instructional Strategies. An independent study capstone allows students to develop an in-depth research project on a topic of their choosing within physical education. To be considered for admission, students must have a bachelor’s degree in kinesiology or a related field and a GPA of at least 3.0. The M.Ed. in Physical Education at the University of Arkansas is accredited by the Council for the Accreditation of Educator Preparation (CAEP). The program has also been ranked among the best online graduate education programs by US News.

Western State Colorado University

Western State Colorado University (WSCU) offers a fully-online teacher licensure program designed for prospective first-time teachers in Colorado who already hold a bachelor’s degree in kinesiology or a related field. During a one-year residency, students intern under a mentor teacher for 24 hours per week while taking online courses towards a Master of Education (M.Ed.) in Physical Education. During the residency, students progress towards becoming an independent lead teacher and will teach full-time for the final five weeks of this segment of the program. Following initial licensure after the first year, students may elect to continue studying online to earn a further 16 credits to complete the master’s degree in education. In addition to a K-12 endorsement in physical education, this program can lead to endorsements in a range of other subject areas. In total, the program requires 33 credit hours and two years to complete. Courses include Creating Effective Online Learning Environments; Curriculum Development and Assessment; and Research and Critical Inquiry for Leaders.

On average, it takes about two years to complete the master's program, but you have up to five years to finish. Is the master’s in physical education program for me if my undergraduate degree is in a different field?

You will fit right in! The majority of our master’s program students have undergraduate degrees in Elementary and Secondary Education, Business and Marketing, Journalism and Communication, Sociology and Psychology, Criminal Justice, Exercise and Athletic Training, and the Health and Medical fields.

For students with an undergraduate degree in a field other than physical education, some prerequisite coursework may need to be completed in addition to the minimum requirements.

What prerequisites will I need to take?

The amount and type of prerequisites needed to enter the MAT in Physical Education and Sport Pedagogy depends on the applicant’s previous coursework. An accurate number of courses are obtained by meeting with the Program Director and having the candidate’s undergraduate transcripts reviewed by the Graduate Advisement Office.

Program prerequisites (or their equivalents) for certification and the graduate program include:

  • Foundations of Education
  • Child or Adolescent Development
  • Motor Development and Learning
  • Nutrition or MPE 5546 Sports Nutrition
  • Two of the following: Human Anatomy, Physiology or Kinesiology (MPE 5542 – Applied Kinesiology, MPE 5545 – Applied Ex. Physio.)

How long is the application process?

You will first need to submit and complete a Graduate Application. You will be required to submit all transcripts, a resume, and a personal statement. The transcripts submitted will be reviewed to identify the number of co-requisite credits needed for successful completion of the MAT degree and New York State teacher certification. This evaluation will be sent to you if accepted to the program. 

Upon successful admission, you’ll be able to meet with the Program Director again to schedule classes for Fall, Spring, or Summer to begin completing any undergraduate and graduate-level course requirements.

I’m ready to begin my coaching career! How long does it take to complete the master’s in physical education?

On average, students complete the program in two and a half years, with a maximum time frame of five years.

The program completion time varies based on three factors: the number of co-requisite courses required, the choice between part-time (two classes per semester) or full-time (up to four classes per semester) enrollment, and the availability of classes in Fall, Spring, and Summer.

Can the master’s in physical education and sport pedagogy help me become a coach or an athletic director?

Yes! Graduating with an MAT in Physical Education and Sport Pedagogy will empower your ability to find employment as a coach. If you’re interested in becoming an Athletic Director in an educational setting, Manhattanville University has a terrific Department of Education Leadership degree program. The Master of Science degree in Physical Education offers advanced study in movement education for physical educators. The Master of Science in Physical Education Traditional Program is ideal for those physical Educators who already hold a teaching certification and a bachelors degree in physical education. The Master of Science in Physical Education Alternative Fifth Year Program (Alt-A) is ideal for those that currently hold a BS in another subject (other than physical education) but are seeking teacher certification. These programs are recognized and approved by the Alabama State Department of Education as teacher certification programs, thus carrying the masters level pay increase. The Master of Science in Physical Education Programs are jointly shared between the Department of Kinesiology and Health Promotion and the College of Education. Students will only be admitted in Term 1 for the MS PE traditional (which is offered completely online) & Term 1 or Fall semester for MS PE Alt A (which is offered as a blended program). Master of Science in Education in Physical Education (Pre-K–12)

The Master of Science in Education degree is a New York State Education Department approved program that leads to Professional Certification for students already holding Initial Certification. A minimum B (3.0 of 4.0) cumulative undergraduate average is required for admission.

Students must maintain a B average throughout either program for completion/ graduation. Students must meet with the Graduate Advisor for registration prior to each semester enrolled.

Deadlines for Application

*Applicants for the Ph.D. with a concentration in Sport Administration have a priority deadline of February 15 and a final deadline of April 1. This applies for all semesters.

The priority deadline is encouraged for best consideration; however, all applications must be received by the final application deadline.

Early application is recommended. These dates also apply for financial aid.

Master of Science in Physical Education

The Master of Science (M.S.) in Physical Education is offered under both Plan I  (thesis) and Plan II (non-thesis) in accordance with the regulations found in the Graduate Program section of this Catalog. Each candidate must have had an undergraduate major, or equivalent, in physical education or an acceptable area. Coursework for this degree can be chosen from one of several concentrations reflecting the interests and goals of the student.

Requirements

The M.S. in Physical Education requires completion of 33-36 approved credit hours, depending on the concentration, and completion of a statistics course and/or a research course or their equivalents, thesis or pass comprehensive exam. The committee of studies must include at least one faculty from each of the two selected areas. The planned program of studies must be approved prior to the completion of 12 credit hours in the Master's program at UNM.

General Physical Education

Coursework and experiences in each concentration are developed with an advisor within the structure of each area. Details about each area can be obtained from the Department Graduate Administrator.

Concentration in Adapted Physical Education

This program is designed to prepare professional physical educators with the ability to develop and implement appropriate physical education programming for individuals with mental retardation and severe disabilities.

An advisor from the concentration assist students with the course selection and ensure progression through the program. In conjunction with their advisor, the student may choose from two plans: Plan I or Plan II . The Committee on Studies must have at least one faculty member from the concentration and one faculty member from within Physical Education. The planned program must be approved prior to the completion of 12 credit hours. Only licensed physical education teachers may pursue this concentration. For specific details of the program, interested applicants should contact the concentration coordinator.

Concentration in Curriculum and Instruction

This program is designed for students interested in the development of physical education curriculum for different levels, and in pedagogy, including the supervision of instruction. GRE scores are not required for this concentration.

Concentration in Exercise Science

This program is designed to prepare students for one or more of the following American College of Sports Medicine Certifications: Health/Fitness Instructor, Exercise Test Technologist and Exercise Specialist. Students are also prepared to take the Exercise Physiologist Certification Exam from the American Society of Exercise Physiologists. Students who are ACSM-certified prior to entering this program are encouraged to obtain the next level of ACSM certification. A minimum of 35 credit hours of coursework beyond the B.S. degree is required for this program.

  *Elective courses from related disciplines (e.g. Nutrition, Biology, Biomedical Sciences, Chemistry, etc.) may be substituted for any required courses that were taken prior to acceptance into the Master’s degree program. Program of Studies Committee approval required for course substitutions.

Concentration in Sport Administration

This program is designed to prepare students to provide leadership in positions such as high school athletic directors, college athletic administrators and directors of amateur and professional sport organizations. The concentration is comprehensive in nature, but course work can be designed around the core requirements to meet unique objectives of each student.

M.S. with Sport Administration Concentration and School Administrative Licensure

This is an interdisciplinary program available to students who want to pursue administrative positions in interscholastic athletics and desire to be licensed school administrators in New Mexico. The curriculum is listed below and requires students to complete the M.S. with a concentration in Sport Administration and an additional minor in School Leadership from the Department of Educational Leadership and Organizational Learning. The program requires students to complete a total of 51 credit hours including Internships in both Sport Administration and Educational Leadership. Also, it should be noted that completion of the coursework does not constitute administrative licensure. An individual must also hold a New Mexico Level III teaching license for one year prior to applying for New Mexico Administrative Licensure. To obtain a Level III teaching license, an individual must have a minimum of 6 years teaching experience. Administrative licensure is awarded through the NM Public Education Department (PED).

Doctor of Philosophy in Physical Education, Sports and Exercise Science

Minimum Degree Requirements. Minimum of 72-74 approved credit hours beyond the B.S. degree, completion of a dissertation, completion of courses in statistics, research design and philosophy or ethical standards, or their equivalents, and 24 credit hours from an approved supporting area.

Within the Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) in Physical Education, Sports and Exercise Science, there are options available to design a program of studies in physical education that fits with students’ interests and career directions. Specific concentration areas are described below and students should contact the department for information specific to each concentration. A 24 credit hour supporting area is also required and is determined with advisor approval. All course substitutions must be approved by Ph.D. Committee on Studies.

The concentration in curriculum and instruction (pedagogy) is directed to prepare individuals for college teaching and research in those portions of professional preparation programs dealing with curriculum development, teaching, school environments and supervision of teachers and programs in physical education. Prospective students are those individuals with teaching experience in physical education who desire to work within the aforementioned areas in a teacher education program. Upon completion of the proposed program of studies, individuals should be equipped to teach courses in curriculum design, methods of teaching, foundations of physical education and be able to supervise student teachers. Students should contact program advisor for details about coursework.

Minor/Supporting Area:  A minimum of 12 of the 72 hours must be outside of the student’s major area of study. This coursework must be determined with the student’s major advisor and Committee on Studies to reflect a comprehensive program of study and may include research courses and/or other courses complementary to the student’s major area of study and degree program.

This concentration is designed to prepare exercise scientists for academic research and clinical settings. Prerequisite coursework includes: cadaver anatomy and physiology, general chemistry, organic/biochemistry, physics, college algebra, statistics, English composition, technical writing, public speaking, motor learning, kinesiology, exercise physiology, human nutrition, energy nutrients in human nutrition and vitamins and minerals in human nutrition. Students should contact program advisor for details about coursework.

This concentration is designed to prepare students to provide leadership in positions such as high school athletic directors, college athletic administrators and directors of amateur and professional sports organizations, as well as those interested in careers in higher education. Areas of focus within the program are determined in consultation with a faculty advisor. Students entering the program with previous degrees other than sport administration or physical education are considered. The Sport Administration Program has received “Approved Program” status from NASPE/NASSM.

Requirements: Minimum 72 credit hours plus 18 credit hours of dissertation. A minimum of 24 credit hours of classroom work beyond the master’s must be taken in Sport Administration at UNM. Seven foundational courses, in addition to the core requirements, are required for graduation. Any of the foundational or core courses or their equivalents may be accepted from previous master’s coursework and/or transfer credit with advisor approval.

Secondary/Supporting Area: 24 credit hours of coursework in an approved secondary or supporting area outside of the program are required. Inquiry skills courses cannot be used to satisfy secondary/ supporting area requirements.

Electives: Additional elective courses in Sport Administration to be selected with advisor.

This course will compare and contrast the various research methodologies most commonly practiced in sport marketing settings. Through systematic analysis of the sport marketing mix, students will demonstrate proficiency in conducting and presenting sport market research.

PRPE 2110 . Introduction to Athletic Training . (3)

The subject matter of this course is designed to provide an introduction to the field of athletic training and the basis for prevention and treatment of athletic injuries.

In order to maintain accreditation requirements, this course is unique to UNM and may be not be replaced with a transferred course from another institution.

PRPE 2120 . Teaching Fund Motor Skills [Physical Education Skills and Content I] . (3)

This course is designed to provide physical education majors an overview of traditional and non-traditional teaching methods that can be used to teach physical education, focusing on upper elementary and junior high age students. Strong emphasis will be put on progressions and tactical teaching methods and styles. Evaluation and assessment processes will be emphasized as well as incorporating a fitness component into each lesson with proper warm-up and cool down techniques. Each student will lead the class in a number of hands-on practical experiences with immediate feedback to begin learning the pros and cons of teaching physical education, improving each student’s skill and knowledge in planning and teaching physical education.

PRPE 2125 . Teaching Sport and Physical Activity [Physical Education Skills and Content II] . (3)

PRPE 2130 . Athletic Training Observation Laboratory . (3)

This course will focus on the professional development and responsibilities in the profession of athletic training. Materials addressed will include, but not limited to: blood-borne pathogens training; pre-participation examinations; basic wrapping skills; protective equipment; environmental considerations; and basic human anatomy. Students in this course will be introduced to the clinical aspects of athletic training and UNM-ATEP policies.

PRPE 2135 . Athletic Training Clinical I . (4)

The subject matter of this course is designed to study the principles of protective athletic equipment, splinting, taping and bandaging techniques, and emergency procedures. Material addressed will include but not limited to: minimal standards of protection, materials used to decrease forces, tissue characteristics, emergency action planning, prevention and treatment of environmental conditions, and basic injury record keeping.

Prerequisite: 2110 and 2130.

PRPE 2140 . Evaluation of Athletic Injuries: Extremities . (4)

This course is designed to provide information relative to assessment techniques and procedures that are essential to properly evaluate orthopedic and athletic injuries. Information gained during this course will provide athletic training students with a systematic evaluation process that can be applied to all athletic related injuries to the extremities, neck, head, trunk and torso.

Prerequisite: 2135.

PRPE 2145 . Evaluation of Athletic Injuries: Trunk and Torso . (4)

PRPE 2150 . Motor Learning and Performance . (3)

Psychological and neurophysiological factors related to the development of motor skills, emphasis on the teacher's role in facilitating learning.

PRPE 2155 . Tests and Measurements . (3)

Designed to provide exercise science professionals, physical education professionals, athletic trainers, and future PT/OT students the knowledge of, and ability to select and administer fitness, skill, cognitive and affective measurement and evaluation techniques for various populations.

Prerequisite: MATH 1350.

PRPE 2165 . Kinesiology . (3)

A study of the musculoskeletal system as it relates to movement, physical activity and exercise performance. This course will introduce students to basic neuromuscular and biomechanical principles of human movement. Muscle origin, insertion and actions will also be covered.

PRPE 2170 . Teaching Fitness Concepts . (3)

This course is designed to provide physical education pre-service teacher candidates a basic background in exercise and health related fitness concepts. Planning, conducting and evaluating lessons in the area of fitness will be emphasized. The five health-related fitness components will be highlighted. Teacher candidates will participate in various fitness assessments; preparing, conducting, and evaluating each assessment area of fitness and learning how to develop goals and activities for behavior change. Teacher candidates will also complete a physical education teaching field experience with homeschool children the last six weeks of the course.

PRPE 2175 . Introduction to Sport Pedagogy [Professional Laboratory Experiences] . (3)

This course is designed to provide teacher candidates with an overview of effective and best practices for becoming a professional physical education teacher and to develop the beginning skill set of a high-quality educator. The teacher candidates will be given the opportunity to observe professional physical education teachers in their classrooms, from Albuquerque Public Schools. Teacher candidates will participate twice a week in a one-hour seminar and assist a physical education teacher in the classroom, two hours per week.

Introduction to the field of exercise science, including elements from the basic and clinical sciences and other allied health professions that integrate with exercise science.

What is a physical therapist?

When individuals are recovering from injury or disease, the physical therapist evaluates and directs the recovery process to relieve pain, make them stronger, and help them to regain use of an affected limb. Physical therapists also teach patients and their families what to do so that healing continues through self-care at home.

Physical therapy attempts to meet an individual's health goals, whether a patient's goal is walking without assistance or running a marathon. A physical therapist is an integral part of the health care team that makes these goals a reality.

So you’ve made the decision to go to grad school. You’ve weighed your options , researched the benefits of a graduate education , and discovered the value of having an advanced degree . Now it’s time to choose which program to pursue—a task that can seem overwhelming given the number of options available.

But the process doesn’t have to be so daunting. There are actions you can take to make choosing a graduate degree program more manageable—exciting, even. As you take the next step toward your personal and professional goals, take note of the following tips to help you choose a graduate school and degree program best suited for you.

Difference Between Grad School and Undergrad Programs

Before you start searching for the right graduate school for you, it’s essential to know what to expect for this new career trajectory you’ll be embarking on. Unlike an undergraduate program, grad programs are highly specialized and much more advanced in your field of study.

Prospective graduate students can expect a far more individualized experience as they work closely with students and professors. Due to this specialization, entering a graduate program will be an investment of time that’ll ultimately help elevate your expertise and career choices.

Tips for Choosing a Graduate School

1. Take inventory of your passions and motivations.

Pursuing a graduate education is a big investment, so it’s critical to understand the unique “ why ” behind your decision. What do you hope to achieve by going back to school? Whether you’d like to gain more specialized knowledge, change careers, earn a promotion, increase your salary potential, or achieve a lifelong personal goal, make sure the program you choose will help get you there.

Examine the curricula and course descriptions of various degree programs, and assess how each offering aligns with your passions and interests. Graduate school is challenging, but it will feel more manageable if you’re working toward something that matters to you. Understanding your expectations and what you want to get out of the program is the first step in choosing a degree that will be a good fit.

2. Do your research and explore your options.

Once you’ve determined your motivations for returning to school, leave yourself time to research the types of degree programs available in your preferred area of study and the opportunities each can create.

Resources like the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics’ Occupational Outlook Handbook can give you a sense of typical career paths by industry, along with the educational degree requirements for each. The handbook also provides market growth forecasts and earning potential to help inform your decision.

It’s also important to note the structure and focus of each program. Even in the same discipline, a program’s focus can vary among institutions. Does the curriculum emphasize theory, original research, or a more practical application of knowledge? Whatever your goals may be, make sure the program’s focus aligns with the educational experience that will provide you with the most value. Career changers, for example, who likely don’t have industry experience, might prefer a program with access to hands-on learning opportunities or a path for completing prerequisites like Northeastern’s Align and Bridge programs.

While conducting your research, don’t be afraid to utilize your professional network. Speak with colleagues who have pursued an advanced degree in your industry and reach out to alumni of the institutions you’re considering. Listening to their experiences as a graduate student and in the job market post-degree can help you gauge if the program is in line with your goals.

3. Keep your career goals in mind.

After exploring your range of program options, consider your career goals and how each specific graduate program can help you get there.

If you’re seeking a specialized area of focus, be sure to examine the program concentrations offered at each institution. One graduate program in education might prepare you to specialize in higher education administration or elementary instruction, while other institutions may offer concentrations in special education or classroom technology. Make sure the program you choose reflects your career interests.

Alternatively, if you’re unsure of exactly where your career path may take you, you may want to consider a broader degree that can give you flexibility in its application. Some degree programs, such as a Master of Business Administration , teach skills that can be applied across multiple professions. If this is the path you’d prefer to pursue, pick a degree that will remain relevant as you move around in your career.

Examine the types of credentials professionals in the industry possess and research the types of skills potential employers are looking for. Check to see that the degree program offers opportunities to learn and develop those same skills. You’ll want to make sure the program you’re investing your time in will arm you with the knowledge you can actually apply in the real world.

Some professions also require board certification and/or state licensure. For example, someone interested in becoming a ​​project manager must complete 35 hours of relevant training before gaining eligibility to sit for the certification exam. You’ll want to ensure that the graduate program you ultimately decide on is fully accredited and will help you meet any certification or licensure requirements.

Location is also an important factor to consider when thinking about potential employment opportunities after graduation. Individuals interested in financial services may consider schools in a major banking center, such as Charlotte , while those pursuing a technology career might look for programs in Silicon Valley .

Further, if your goal is to work for a specific company, do your research to determine where graduates of the programs you’re looking at are working. Universities often have corporate partnerships in which employers recruit graduates to work at their organization. Check to see if your dream company partners with any nearby universities.

4. Make sure the program fits your lifestyle.

While aligning your career goals, make sure the degree program you choose will realistically fit within your lifestyle, and determine what level of flexibility you need. There are many options available that will allow you to earn an advanced degree at the right pace and in the right format for you.

Some degrees can be earned in as little as 12 months, while others can take years. Determine how much time you’re willing to invest, considering your personal values, work and family commitments, and the type of graduate experience you’d like to have.

Full-time graduate studies are not for everyone. If you’re a working professional, you may benefit from the increased flexibility provided by a part-time degree program. You might also consider the benefits of online or hybrid graduate programs that provide access to worldwide institutions that may have otherwise not been an option.

5. Consider your finances.

Decide what you can afford for graduate school, and don’t forget to factor in both the up-front costs, such as tuition and textbooks, and hidden fees, like transportation and student activity costs. While your education is an investment, make sure you can cover the costs associated with earning your graduate degree.

Paying for graduate school can seem intimidating, but there are many different options available to you. While you narrow down your list of schools, be sure to check out the financial aid options at each institution. Along with scholarships , loans, and grants, some schools may offer assistantships or fellowships for graduate students.

For those who may already be working in their industry, your employer may offer tuition reimbursement , which pays for a predetermined amount of continuing education credits or college coursework to be applied toward a degree. Contact your company’s human resources department to determine whether tuition reimbursement is available to you and if your program of interest meets the eligibility requirements.

All of these options will help ease the costs associated with your education and could help you earn valuable experience to enhance your resumé. You may also want to consider your future earning potential and job opportunities when weighing your options—you want your degree to be worth the money, time, and energy you put into earning it.

6. Talk to admissions advisors, students, and alumni.

When determining your graduate school options, it’s important to talk to current students and alumni. Begin by creating a list of questions to ask, such as:

  • Do you have enough academic and career guidance?
  • What do you like and dislike about your program?
  • Are you happy with your professors?
  • Are there co-op and internship opportunities available to you?
  • How do you feel about the student community?
  • What do you wish you knew before enrolling?

What students and alumni tell you might surprise you and could be extremely valuable in determining the right graduate school for you.

Speak With a Student Ambassador

 Talk to an ambassador who’s been there and done that.

You can also speak with graduate admissions advisors to help you narrow your options. They have experience guiding students to make this type of decision and can provide you with the outcomes of past students whose goals were similar to yours. In speaking with the institution’s alumni and mentor network, you also have the opportunity to assess the type of connections you can make there and how they may help you get ahead after graduation.

7. Network with faculty.

Faculty can make or break your graduate school experience. Take the time to reach out to your potential professors and get to know them. Don’t be afraid to ask specific questions about their background to see if it aligns with what you want to learn.

Apply to universities that have one or more professors who focus on your area of interest and with whom you can imagine collaborating while earning your degree. Determine if they can help facilitate your growth, and go with a program where you’re comfortable with the faculty.

Applying to Graduate School

After narrowing down your options and determining which graduate programs align most closely with your career goals, lifestyle, and personal interests, you’re ready to begin the application process. It might seem intimidating, but applying to graduate school is simple so long as you remain organized and are well-prepared.

While the application requirements may look different depending on the institution and type of degree program you’re applying to, there are certain materials that you’ll likely be asked for as part of your grad school application. These include:

  • An application form
  • Undergraduate transcripts
  • A well-optimized professional resumé
  • A statement of purpose or personal statement
  • Letters of recommendation
  • GRE, GMAT, or LSAT test scores (if required)
  • An application fee

Do your research to determine what the application requirements are for your program of choice, and remain conscious of deadlines. 

Remember that Graduate School Is a Stepping Stone

When deciding which program to pursue, it’s important to remember that graduate school is a stepping stone toward your personal and professional goals—not the final destination. Bachelor of Science in Kinesiology

The Bachelor of Science in Kinesiology provides a broad, comprehensive study of physical activity and human movement. Students observe and studiy movement across the lifespan from mechanical, physiological, psychological, sociocultural, behavioral, instructional and professional points of view. Focused concentration areas provide additional background knowledge and preparation for advanced study or professional careers in allied health and medicine, exercise science, gerokinesiology, physical education, recreation and physical activity promotion, sport studies, and strength and conditioning.

In addition to the requirements for the major, students must meet all other university requirements for a bachelor’s degree. Please consult the Graduation Requirements for the Bachelor’s Degree    section in this catalog for complete information. All courses in the major, including prerequisites, must be completed with a “C” (2.0) or better, and must be taken on an Option 1 (letter grade) basis. Kinesiology courses with the “junior or senior standing” prerequisite require students to have completed a minimum of 55 units. Intercollegiate sport courses may be completed with the Credit/No Credit option.
