Hi. I’m Lisa and I love to travel. Plain and simple. And it’s a passionate affair, not hyperbole. I had to write this ‘why I love travelling’ essay to try to express how much I love travel. I never thought I’d do something like that. It was a pipe dream. It seemed impossible. Until..it wasn’t.

In most cases, traveling is cheaper , easier , and safer than you think.

I have always loved the adventure of travel — the unknown, something different, something new. And I feel the same way today… even though now the ‘next bend’ may be on another continent. I have been extremely lucky to continuously feed my passion and love of travel. Many out there share my passion while others do not. Looking back I can recount how I developed this travel bug . But, why do I love traveling so much? Here’s my ‘I love travel essay’ to try to explain this magic of travel!

1.  I love the excitement of traveling

I love the excitement of it all — feeling like an explorer — discovering a new land, a new language, new money and all the little challenges that go along with it. When I travel, I am more spontaneous and don’t live for the future or the past… just in the moment. Being impulsive and saying ‘yes’ to nearly everything is part of the fun.

2.  I love the adrenaline rush of traveling

I love the rush . Habitual runners get off on the kick-in of endorphins that give them that extra boost they need to keep going. I get the same jolt from a day of travel or an unexpected side trip to a new and undiscovered land (for me… not for all mankind) that I hadn’t planned to visit.  Traveling seems to give me a near constant adrenaline rush.  After a few years of uninterrupted travel, I became quite addicted to this feeling. Traveling can be a challenge, but to me, a fun challenge that I enjoy conquering time and time again.  Plus it sure beats having to vacuum, pay bills, or shop for toilet paper.

3.  I love learning new things

I learn so much from travel . World travel broadens your mind in so many ways. You meet new people, share new experiences, and let down your guard much more than when back at home caught up in the mundane day to day routine of life that we think is normal.  I get to see how the world lives. I see the sun and smiles in Israel that go way beyond the CNN clips. I learn about the differences and embrace the similarities. I am not there to complain about how it is ‘so different than back home,’ but rather to appreciate these dissimilarities. Just because something is different does NOT mean it is wrong and in many cases it can even be better. And, the people I meet get to know a bit about me, my world, and my background which can help dispel some other stereotypes as well. And now, some headlines I may have not noticed in the past, grab my attention. I’ve been to these places and have experienced their generosity. Now I’m much more interested and aware of what is going on there.

4.  I love the l ogistics of traveling

I like landing in a new place and trying to figure it all out myself. Where to get money. How to speak the language. How to go from point A to point B. How to pack my bag right so I don’t go insane after packing it for the 135 th time. Well, okay, maybe I don’t love that mundane task, but I still figure it’s better than all the tedious chores I left back home when I decided to travel. It all actually becomes easier and easier as it goes and gives you the sense of confidence that you can do anything. If I can plop down in an airport amidst the chaos of Cairo or hubbub in Hanoi and manage to get myself into the heart of town and find a place to stay, all the while, not getting ripped off and keep my sense of humor, then I am certainly not really worried about being able to go anywhere, anytime.

5.  I love the simplicity of it all.

My only job is to go somewhere and figure out how to do it. My to-do list is rather short: figure out the exchange rate and get cash out of an ATM, figure out a few key words in the native language , figure out transport to my lodging and around town, exchange books (find English used bookstore), do laundry every 2 weeks or so. Because I travel for longer periods, occasionally I also have to: get a haircut and buy new clothes to replace ratty, holey old ones.

Everything you own is with you in one bag . You only have a few pairs of pants or t-shirts, so getting dressed each day is an easy task. The more we have, the more it seems to weigh us down. Your life isn’t complicated by all the nonsense that is back home. But, guess what? If you really need a new shirt or shoes… you can buy it anywhere in the world. There is not much we actually really need and I think in this mega-consumerist society, we too often forget that. You need food and you need shelter… that’s about it. I enjoy some love, laughter, and happiness too… but that’s free and takes up no space in my luggage.

6.  I love meeting new people all the time.

In no other time in my life have I met so many people and made so many new friends in such a short time. The world is full of friendly, generous people. Sure, every place has its share of nitwits too, but as a traveler, you seem much less likely to meet them.  Maybe because people want to help you or maybe because you just don’t know some people long enough to uncover their schmuck-like tendencies. Since the nature of travel is to keep moving, these folks never become boring… because you simply don’t know them long enough to discover their flaws or get sick of them.

7.  I love the freedom .

I experience a great feeling of independence from traveling solo . I can go wherever I want, whenever I want. I can sleep in. I can stay out late. It’s all up to me.

All this also shows me how easy it would be just to live somewhere else… anywhere else really.  Staying in each place for an extended bit of time taught me how I could make friends, find work, and find a flat all rather easily.  Things that I would have to do if I was living there anyway-so, in many ways, for all intents and purposes it’s as if I was living there already.

Great perspective on the why's of travel (love the quotes) – especially in regards to simplicity and freedom from possessions. I am in the midst of re-configuring my life for long-term travel and just wanted to say thanks for the encouragement you offer by just doing what you want to do.

I think traveling is incredibly important. It increases tolerance because you actually meet people from different cultures and learn that they are not so different from you.I wish that I could travel far more but I can't afford it! Great review !

I’m addicted to travelling,we can meet new people especially love talking with them and we can understand their way of life. When I plan a trip away, I always create a list of places that I want to visit, and make sure I visit those places.

I quoted that same Mark Twain line to a friend some time ago and he replied, "There was never a safe harbor." At the time I thought he was just being antagonistic, but I see that it was very true. we could get run over by a bus any day of the year. our heart can get broken in any city in the world, and every day people go to sleep and never wake up. I think his pessimistic response is just more of a reason for everyone to go see what the world has to offer them.

I just love travelling just the very thought of getting to an unknown desination is enough to get me excited. Unfortunately iam not able to travel all due to certain circumstances and culture… i envy those people who truly understand the importance and need to able to let yourself go and even if busy in the day to day life are able to take some time away for their soul:) its an enrichment process in my opinion… i hope it changes and i am able to do some travelling if not too much… thx for the lovely insight i enjoyed reading it:)

Every person has a dream, my dream was broken and shattered. I used to love travelling, every day i always used to ask my parents, Can we go somewhere new? The truth was, I was so badly addicted that i started leaving in a dream world of my own. I used to draw photos of south america, used to look up all the facts.. but deep inside I forgot that reality is so bitter. The place I was living was alright, but soon it became depressing. I felt like life without travelling for just a few moments would ruin my life. The people I started meeting in different countries made me feel like i belonged there, not here. My happy memories travelling? I cry whenever i think of it again. I feels like being locked in a cage, full of darkness. Every month i'd wait for my holidays, cry and plead my parents to at least take me to a nearby country. No one understands how much i love travelling, and you know? One day Im going to get there. Im going fufill all my dreams because You only live once. That's all to say.

This resonates with me on many levels, particularly the excitement of it all and figuring out logistics. I'm so glad that I've had a passion for travel since I was a kid, too. It makes me happy to be going places.

ESSAY: Why I Love to Read and to Write by Gail Dayton

Last winter, I posted that I would love to hear from readers, writers, bloggers about why they read, write and blog. Gail Dayton, author of the new book, New Blood , offers up this personal account.

I love to read. No, I looooove to read. And I read fast. I read about 300 books a year (counting re-reads). So when I saw the Ja(y)nes offer to post essays on reading, writing and the love thereof, I got to thinking-‘WHY do I love reading and writing so much.

It’s the stories. My cousin Diane taught me to read when I was just four, and from that moment, I’ve been caught up in the worlds opened up to me by books. But I think my addiction to story must go earlier than that, because my mother likes to talk about taking me to see Bambi with my multitude of cousins when I was three. (Mama is the youngest of four sisters, each of whom had four kids, except for Aunt Bettye, who had six…The family Thanksgiving is massive.) For weeks afterward, my invisible friend Bambi went everywhere with me. Hey, at least Bambi was a deer and didn’t require his own plate at the dinner table, like the fella’s invisible friend Mister. (Mister got on a plane one day and flew to Chicago, never to be seen again.)

Stories fire my imagination and, for a little while, let me live in That world, instead of this-‘often boring-‘one. In the world of story, ANYTHING can happen.

Which is why I write. I still have invisible friends. No, really. TIME magazine quoted researchers who discovered that fiction writers’ relationships with their characters is virtually identical with a child’s relationship with his invisible friends. We know they’re not real. Honest. We do know. But we still have no control over them. They go off and do stuff just because they want to, and we have no way to stop them.

Back to the topic. I don’t write just because I get to hang out with invisible friends. I write because I get to tell stories. And in those stories, ANYTHING can happen. Dragons are real. Soul mates can find their destiny. People can recover from tragedy. Even all of the above. And, despite the fact that characters can go their own way, I can still tell the story I want to tell. (The characters usually know better than I do.)

I started wanting to tell stories MY way back in-‘junior high, I think. That’s when I inherited a bunch of my dad’s old books. Copies of Robin Hood in archaic English. The original Tarzan by Edgar Rice Burroughs. I literally read the cover off Tarzan . The only problem I saw was that Tarzan didn’t have a sister. Jane really didn’t cut it as a place-holder for the role I wanted to play in the book. I wanted to live in the jungle too. So I made up one.

I graduated from fan fiction sometime in college, eventually learned to finish a book, and here I am. I still love to read, and I still love to write (even though these days it sometimes can feel like work). Because it’s all about the story.

I read for the same reasons ^^. I dreamt my fanfiction for years up until university… I even tried to start a fantasy book but it sucked. So now I just fall into you writers’ imagination and enjoy. Great to read that you could take the next steps and write AND publish.

How my, what article in the TIME mag? Do you know in which volume it was? I want to read it 0.0

It was also the love of a good story that did it for me. In my case though, I stopped writing when I discovered reading. I’m so lazy, it was much easier to get the stories whole from writers than to make them up myself… the writers’ at least had closure.

Jumping suject: TARZAN!!! It was so cool. It brought me to ERB, and to my favourite series of his, the Mars one — especially the later volumes. The one where the hero gets his brain put in a piecemeal construct is such a riot, no? A monster-like hero… *drool*

@J Oponce: It was several years ago that I read that article. We weren’t living in Galveston then, so at least 2 years ago. The article was actually about children and their invisible friends, but the quote about fiction writers stuck with me. Maybe if you go to TIME.com and search…

Holy Crap. It’s there. The article. I searched on “children imaginary friend” and it came up at the top. It’s called The Power of Make Believe, and it was published 2/7/2005, so 3 years ago. Wow. I enjoyed your comments as well. Imaginations are wonderful .I was given Pinnochio (the real one) at a very young age and can barely remember a time when I didn’t know how to read. I turned everything around me into real boys and girls for years lol. I can even remember some of the stories I concocted and that’s been 40 years ago! (yeah I’m old) Keep telling stories Gail.

Personal essay: why i love traveling so much.

Even at first glance, it is so obvious to everyone who meets me that I love traveling. The idea of travel, packing my bags and disappearing to someplace new, lives inside the brain allllll the time. I mean, I spend my spare time on Google flights, haha.

Not to mention, whenever I meet someone for the first time or even encounter an old friend, I instantly want to talk about my upcoming trips, ask about their own adventures, share embarrassing and funny travel stories, and swap bucket list ideas.

And yeah, I’ll admit it. I’m probably a little annoying to my non-traveling friends and acquaintances, but I can’t help myself. My “wanderlusty” passion seeps through my pores, out of my control.

Passion is a good thing, I guess?

A few years ago, on my 29th birthday, I wrote about 29 Ways Travel Changes You forever. I know that ever since I started my solo adventures, I slowly morphed into a far more spontaneous, well-rounded, and grateful person. I used to freak out at plans changing or sudden cancellations, but now, disruption to my routine just rolls off my shoulders. 

Although I still stand by the ideas in that post, I wanted to return to my “graduate school” roots and felt inspired to write an entire essay explaining why I love traveling so much, haha. I know it is stating the obvious in many ways, but sometimes we all need a little dose of inspiration, especially after the stress and uncertainty of the COVID-19 pandemic that put global travel on hold for nearly two years. 

Exploring the world costs time and money (not to mention, boarding planes stresses me to the max!) so the trade-offs need to be worth it, right?

“I Love to Travel Because” — A Complete Essay

Okay, full disclosure , some of the reasons why I love traveling are totally superficial and shallow.

I mean, think about it. Travel makes you look cool. For instance, an ongoing joke about dating apps (haha) is that every single profile professes a deep love of travel. It’s damn near cliche at this point. And I understand why. 

I also love to travel, because being in a new place means I’m allow to indulge and spoil myself. Pampering myself has become even more important on solo trips in my 30s , honestly.

I mean, isn’t it nice to eat a lot of delicious food, explore museums stuffed with world class art, and capture the perfect Instagram shot on top of a mountain crowned in a pink sunrise’s glow? Of course!

However, all jokes aside, I love to travel for deeper personal reasons, too. The experiences go far beyond pretty pictures and a full stomach.

I deeply believe travel makes you richer, not in your wallet, but in your intelligence and compassion. Not to mention, roaming this planet makes you realize your full potential and helps you learn what makes you truly happy. Let’s break it down.

Travel is My Passion

Life without passion is a prison sentence, in my opinion. Each day blends together until they are identical.

Wake up. Go to work. Eat dinner. Watch television. Sleep.

Time slips away without accomplishing anything. Not good.

We’re all on this earth for a deeper purpose. We need to discover that purpose and let it embrace us. By doing that, we cultivate the abilities to face any challenges that come flying in our direction.

For me, travel is my passion. Travel is my purpose. Not to mention, I channel this passion by using my own experiences to help people feel brave enough to take the trips of their dreams.

Recently, I’m listening to a lot of motivational podcasts on my commutes to work. For example, I love “The School of Greatness” and think these interviews provide great insight on practical ways to improve yourself. Seriously, if you’re struggling, then give this podcast a try.

Anyway, one of the reoccurring themes on “The School of Greatness” is to find a passion and purpose in life. No one can take passion away from you. It’s freeing.

And travel? Is a beautiful passion. Most importantly, I like to learn about humanity, beyond my country’s borders, in order to better connect with others. It’s a blessing.

Travel Helps Me Believe in People.

Travel restores my faith in people. It’s true.

Okay, I hate to out myself on this blog, but I’m a total cynic sometimes. Full disclosure.

In general, I have a very hard time trusting people, mostly because I worry they’ll lie or take advantage of me. And sadly, some people have done just that (another story for another day, my friends). It’s super challenging not to be jaded.

Yet travel reminds me so many kind-hearted, inspiring, brave, and intelligent people exist in the world. For example, I’ll never forget how complete strangers invited me to lunch in Nazare and helped me find the way to Stockholm after my train was canceled.

I’ve also had strangers talk to me on planes to calm my anxiety over flying. I had one woman stay awake the entire flight on my trip to Madrid, for instance, and reassure me whenever we hit a bump in the sky.

Travel reminds you that most people are inherently good. They are. I promise.

Even at home, the travel community’s members never stop encouraging me to transform into a better version of myself. For example, attending Women’s Travel Fest in New York City connected me with so many incredible women who are living their best lives every single day.

Travel Heals My Insecurities.

On a similar note, I’m a person who loves to travel, because exploring the world builds incredible self-confidence and worth. I’m able to accept and embrace my flaws much more readily after traveling somewhere epic and having time to reflect.

In our society, there’s an unspoken pressure to embody perfection, and falling short of that standard isn’t acceptable.

Think about it. When was the last time you felt safe admitting that you were angry or jealous and received zero judgement or advice regarding your turbulent feelings?

We all have flaws and insecurities. We’ll never reach this ridiculous idea of perfection either. 

Travel gives you a chance to push beyond these troublesome traits, which we all have, and even accept them for what they are.

Is traveling alone scary? Absolutely.

However, the fear is invaluable, because you need to get out of your comfort zone for personal growth to happen. For example, I was terrified to go paragliding in Slovenia, not only because I hate flying on general principle, but because I’ve never identified myself as a dare devil. I felt like an imposter. But when my feet touched the ground again, I realized how much courage I actually possess. Cool, huh?

As I’ve said, we all deal with insecurities. All of us. But these supposed flaws don’t have to define us. Another major reason why I love traveling is because I was able to move beyond these flaws.

Travel Makes Me Appreciate Natural Beauty.

I’m a city gal at heart. New York City is my “happy place,” because I love the endless entertainment options, great shopping, and diverse population. Bring me the city lights.

On the other hand, travel forces me to return to nature and foster a deeper appreciation for the earth. My breath was taken away in both the Scottish Highlands and Banff National Park. Crystal clear glacier lakes. Massive green mountains. Fresh air filling my lungs. Our planet is an absolute gem.

I’m even willing to get my hands dirty now!

And, even at home, I’m trying to make getting out into nature a priority. I will say New Jersey has plenty of beautiful beaches, and I fully intend to take advantage of them.

Travel Has Me Falling in Love with Myself.

Self-love is grossly underestimated.   A lot of us are taught to place other peoples’ needs ahead of our own – which is especially true for women. Society pressures and molds us into the perfect daughters, sisters, friends, girlfriends, wives, mothers.

When do we have time to pour the same kindness back onto ourselves to ensure we’re mentally healthy and happy?

There aren’t enough hours in a day. It’s sad.

Travel reclaims your time, and lets you spoil yourself. It’s amazing.

For instance, I took myself out on dates in Seattle. I bought super expensive chocolate and sat in the park and took pictures of Mount Rainier, and it was the best thing ever. I also spent over $70 on myself at the Walrus and the Carpenter in Ballard, and didn’t care that my indulgence had reached ridiculous levels. I was worth it, damn it!

By traveling alone, you can give the love that you freely hand out to everyone to yourself. Be selfish. It’s a wonderful feeling.

Ultimately, I Love to Travel and Experience New Cultures.

My passion for new places and cultures isn’t something that appeared out of nowhere in my adult life. Far from it.

I’ve always wanted to travel ever since I was young. When I was in middle school (wow, I was twelve at one point?), I was convinced that I would move to England and design houses.

While I think the latter had to do with playing too much Sims , my desire to explore beyond the borders of the United States never weakened. Not once.

Travel has made me a stronger person, and I couldn’t imagine my life without endless plane tickets and backpacks. Breaking outside my comfort zone strengthens my self-esteem. It’s a precious gift, the best one I can give myself.

Finally I feel like I have a deeper appreciation for the world now. I’m not as closed off or shallow, and consider myself very receptive to different opinions and ways of life. Travel makes me a better person.

Here’s some final parting wisdom for my fellow travelers. Know that I think you’re amazing for pursuing your passions!

Don’t Feel Guilty.

You’re probably on the receiving end of some judgment. Do any of these lovely nuggets sound familiar?

“Enjoy it now. When you’re married and have kids, you won’t be able to travel anymore.”

“Don’t you want to settle down?”

“Are you running from something?”

These statements are intended to make you feel guilty. End of story. Don’t ever apologize for traveling too much!

You’re allowed to travel as much (or as little) as you want without other people impacting your choices. So, whenever you hear varieties of the above comments, simply smile and nod and move on. Guilt has no place in your adventurous life. BYE.

Share Your Travel Passions with Others.

Even as a solo traveler, we want to talk to people who have the same passions as us. It’s only natural. So, being part of a community makes travel even more special.

Facebook has several groups and communities that will connect you with fellow travelers. I love giving travel advice to random strangers in these groups! It makes me feel important.

Not to mention, it’s an easy way to hook up with likeminded people when you’re in a new country or city.

Furthermore, if you run a travel blog, then you can join classes and workshops (such as BlogHouse) , and also attend blogging conferences to make new friends. My blogger friends are some of the greatest people I know, and they support my dreams and goals whenever I feel low. Their encouragement is irreplaceable. You can’t put a price tag on it.

Finally, if you live in or are close to a big city, then check out your local Travel Massive chapter. These events will connect you with travel industry members and influencers, which is great if you’re planning on starting a travel blog.

Not planning on running a travel business? Still go to Travel Massive and make friends! The atmosphere has always been very welcoming.

Share your passion and build a supportive circle.

Implement “Travel Lessons” at Home.

Most of us aren’t digital nomads. We have a permanent address with established careers. We don’t travel 24/7. But another reason why I love traveling is because I can take those memories home with me. 

Regardless, it’s easy to fall into depression at home when you love to travel so, so, so much. Sometimes you even feel like an “outsider” in your own neighborhood, but don’t let isolation creep into your brain. It’s a mistake.

Instead treat your home as another travel destination. Local getaways are fantastic.   Research a cool attraction, park, or restaurant in your own backyard and then go explore.

Curiosity and wonder doesn’t die simply because you’re at home now. You never know what special gems might lurk around the corner.

Get out there!

Why do YOU love to read?

The most simple reason I love reading is that I’m a lifelong reader and have always loved the world of words. I’m the kid who read the cereal box with my breakfast in the morning.

People who love reading and are lifelong readers, usually love it for several of the same reasons. I suppose that many readers could make a similar list. I’m joining in with other TTT list makers today to celebrate the love of reading. Which reason would top your list? Do you have other reasons why you love reading?

I Love Reading….

To experience different lives/times/cultures.

One of the most significant benefits of reading is transporting yourself to different time periods and experiencing different cultures. I often wonder how I would have lived my life during various times and circumstances. Reading improves the imagination.

To Develop Understanding and Compassion

Reading enhances compassion for others as we see life from other perspectives.

To Increase My Knowledge

I love historical fiction because I am continuing my education. Hazards of reading histfic include falling down Google rabbit holes as I am enticed to research different people, time periods, and events. Reading makes you smarter.

I wonder how non-readers survived the pandemic? Although my reading tastes gravitated toward lighter, happier reads during the pandemic, I could always turn off the news and escape into books. Days under lockdown never felt too bleak as I leaped into different imaginary worlds! Reading provides armchair travel and gives you places to go when you have to stay home.

To Experience “Book People Are the Best People”

Have you ever seen someone reading in a coffee shop or on a train and knew that you could be friends with that person because he/she was reading a book? Readers attract other readers and are the most interesting and thoughtful conversationalists! In addition, through blogging I have discovered the fabulous international book blogging community! Reading brings people together.

To Be a Good Conversationalist

One of my favorite conversation starters is “What are you reading?” or “What is your favorite book so far this year?” or “Do you have a favorite literary character?” or “Do you have a favorite author or genre?” Talking about books gives people opportunities to discuss a variety of important and meaningful topics. I’m always flummoxed when the answer is “I don’t read.” Hummmm……. At that point, I ask the person to recall a time in their life when they did enjoy a book. Just recently my grandson, who is not a huge reader, told me that the only book he really ever enjoyed reading was Wild Robot. I think that’s great that he has identified one book that has given him a fond reading memory. I believe people who don’t read just haven’t found the right book yet, so my brain begins whirling with recommendations that would hook them.

To Endure Waiting

Actually, I look forward to waiting rooms! Even a long checkout line is a reading opportunity (if you carry your library with you in your pocket via the Kindle app). A thirty-minute wait in the school pick-up line becomes an excellent reading occasion! Even traffic can be a blessing if you are listening to an audiobook!

To Never Experience Boredom

Nothing on TV? No problem when you’ve got a book. All your friends are busy and you don’t have plans? No problem when you can read. Is it raining all weekend or you’re enduring an unprecedented heatwave or you’re under a hurricane or tornado warning and your outdoor plans have been canceled? Books to the rescue. Children need entertainment? Read a book together and then watch the movie. Books can be your best friend.

To Enjoy Inexpensive Entertainment

Books can be expensive, but there are ways to read on the cheap. Libraries, thrift stores, yard sales, Little Free Libraries, swapping with friends, watching for Kindle deals, asking publishers for ARCs, and Amazon gift cards for birthdays are all ways to cut down on book buying expenses. Last year I read 131 books: over 50% were from the library and another 30% were ARCs…..I bought only a small percentage of books last year and those were almost all on sale. A night at the movies or dinner in a restaurant will likely cost more than a book purchase.

To Give Book Recommendations

As a reader, I always have book recommendations! I love being able to find just the right book for a gift or make a perfect recommendation!

All of the above! I watch Kindle deals and GoodReads giveaways like it was my job LOL. I also like reading because it’s been a habit since I was nine years old. It’s been a constant in my life. How many hobbies can you say that you can grow with throughout the years?

Yes, reading is a wonderful lifelong hobby!

I agree with all of these, but I particularly love #6. I think being someone who is well known for being a reader makes me more accessible. Even people who don’t read know they can always start a conversation with me by asking, “What are you reading?” or “What’s the best book you’ve read this year?” I love it when people, especially non-readers, make that effort. Of course, I have longer conversations with those who actually read, but still…

I love your answers Carol. I just commented on another post about the people I have met when I am in Florida because they are reading and I stop and talk to them about their book. Some of them are there every year and we have become good friends. I don’t know what I would do if I couldn’t read, it is unfathomable.

Right?! What do people do who don’t read?! And reading is a great way to make friends! 🙌 virtually and IRL!

I’ve always being a reader. It gives me the opportunity to live different lives and be different characters I can’t be in real life. It’s the perfect excuse to not attend some programs I find boring with friends. It keeps my company and I am never bored. I don’t know if it’s just me but reading in the library gives me headache, hence am better off alone outside the library. I feel like it makes me productive. And when I meet people I can discuss the books I read with, that’s the best moments of my life. I am creating a group on WhatsApp where I can review/ discuss books with my friends. You can’t get into trouble reading books.

I have always loved reading as well. There was a time when I was working full-time and attending college when I didn’t have time to read what I wanted to read and I remember longing for the time when I could read what I wanted to read.

I read for all of the same reasons you do, but I think my number one reason is that I am fully relaxed when I am reading. I realized this when going through a particularly difficult season. Like you Carol, I can’t imagine how people who don’t read deal with difficult times.

All of these responses resonated with me Carol, especially learning new things and escaping. I also use our local library and the apps available, so I’m not spending too much money on my reading addiction. I also agree with Gretchen above, I am at my most relaxed when reading a book. I can block out the world around me and just be in the book. That’s why I find audio books a bit hard at times, I am always doing something like driving or walking while listening to them and I can’t get the pictures from the words like I can when I read the words myself – if that makes sense! Great list!

I could relate to all of these. Making a decision a few years ago to read more books from authors around the world has given me far more insight into different cultures. Your number 6 reason is an good one. I’ve used books and reading as ice breakers when visiting colleagues in different countries : asking someone what books they would recommend from their country helped break down reservations.

Maggie Nelson’s Like Love: Essays and Conversations

This latest collection resembles a scrapbook of still-fresh memories—miscellaneous, uneven, and indispensable..

“Every mouth needs filling: with something wet or dry, like love, or unfamiliar and savory, like love,” Hilton Als wrote in White Girls . Maggie Nelson’s latest book, titled after this quote, uses Als’s proposition to frame a question: “How can the attention one pays to art be an act of love, or something like it?” For nearly two decades, since 2006, Nelson has explored this question in the reviews, essays, and interviews gathered in Like Love . For her, writing in the cultural sphere, in dialogue with other thinkers and with an ever-expanding inventory of objects, is a humble and highly subjective endeavor. This latest collection resembles a scrapbook of still-fresh memories—miscellaneous, uneven, and indispensable.

Considering the subject position from which Nelson writes—“Demographically,” critic Lauren Stroh once noted, “[Nelson] is out of touch with the vast majority of the country. But she never purports to speak for anybody else”—I paid most attention to the reviews and essays in Like Love dedicated to artists and thinkers of color. I wanted to spend time, alongside the author, focusing on the practices and legacies of figures like Als, Prince, Tala Madani, Kara Walker, Fred Moten, and Nayland Blake. In these pieces, Nelson employs two linked strategies with mixed results. The first is that of connecting and shuttling between the concerns of individuals and the concerns of culture, and the second is that of voraciously collaging dissimilar points of view, allowing them to cohabit hypothetical arenas and generate heat through their contradictions.

Nelson’s first strategy is evident in the titular tribute, a gala speech that gracefully transitions from Hilton Als’s individual accomplishments to broader social issues, such as respectability politics and the cost of mainstream visibility. Similarly, Nelson’s 2016 essay, “The Grind,” a moving tribute to Prince, places mass culture and her own sexual awakening in a dance of cause-and-effect. She confesses—though, are memories confessions when expressed freely, with self-compassion in lieu of shame?—to buying a white ruffled shirt for herself after seeing Purple Rain (1984) and getting together with a fellow middle-schooler, “an incredibly small guy who wore eyeliner and lipstick.” The personal triumphs and ecstasies Nelson associates with Prince’s music add depth to her tribute, though this writing style also eventually demands an interrogation of the writer’s own biases and blind spots, or at least a brief disclaimer. Near the end of “The Grind,” Nelson pauses: “[Prince] was so many things besides a sex symbol for suburban white girls like myself, so please forgive my momentary narrowness. I am just struggling to give my thanks.”

Nelson’s second strategy, that of making meaning through accretion, inclusion, and juxtaposition, accounts for some of the most engaging meditations on art and ethical responsibility. In an essay that briefly discusses a 2017 controversy the Met faced surrounding the display of Balthus’s Thérèse Dreaming (1938)—he’d painted an adolescent model in a sexualized pose—Nelson suggests that the museum install a work by the Iranian-American artist Tala Madani, such as her animation Sex Ed by God (2017), in which a young girl grabs and inserts miniature voyeurs into her vulva, next to the offending Balthus. Nelson’s proposition simultaneously reveals her penchant for discordant juxtapositions and her preference for art that, instead of “chaperoning” public opinion, gives discourse “another turn of the screw.” In this essay, titled “The Dare of Tala Madani,” Nelson telescopes from Madani’s paintings and videos into a meta-critique of “critique” itself:

Shouldn’t there be a better word for the feeling we get when we sense that something is being taken apart and savaged but that “something” remains intentionally imprecise or obscured? … How do we describe paintings that showcase vices and follies with a spirit of hospitality as much as, or more than, condemnation?

Here, the word “hospitality” stands out, suggesting a cultural attitude of generosity towards guests, more commonly associated with hotels, restaurants, and bars than with art museums. Characteristically, Nelson reaches beyond the art world for ways to dislodge the discourse from the rut of dogmatism.

Bricolage seems a suitable container for the hospitality-based criticism Nelson alludes to—that which prioritizes generosity, openness, and plentitude over the “chaperoning” of public opinion—but it can also produce indeterminacy that undermines the author’s dialogical intentions. In “The Understory,” for instance, Nelson reads Event Horizon (2005), a mural by Kara Walker, through Saidiya Hartman’s natal metaphor of slavery but yields the bulk of her short text to quotations from Hartman’s “The Belly of the World,” the press release, the artist’s own words, and an aside about a crying baby in the building. Instead of making the case for whether Event Horizon might offer “another turn of the screw,” Nelson leaves readers with an awkward image of herself as an interloper, “the white lady with a notebook,” as she puts it, “lurking under and on the stairs.” Likewise, in lieu of “reviewing” Fred Moten’s 2017 book Black and Blur in the essay “By Sociality, To Sociality,” she writes, “What’s the point in shooting a straight arrow into a field defined by incessant motion, escape. … How preposterous and off the cake it would feel, at least for me, to drag Black and Blur into the world of appraisal or evaluation of argument. Others can do that, and do it well.” As part of a series of deferrals, she begins and quickly abandons a close reading of a characteristically slippery passage, and because she never intended to penetrate the text, her essay ultimately swerves around the book, leaving more perplexities than insights in its wake.

Throughout the collection, Nelson risks imprecision to preserve her subjects’ ability to stay in motion, even if that means they elude her grasp. Nelson begins “Coming Hungry to No Wrong Holes ,” her 2020 review of Nayland Blake’s Los Angeles retrospective, by acknowledging the biracial artist’s tendency and right to “slip out of something as soon as it risks getting codified.” In line with Blake’s resistance to codification, Nelson, through her writing’s inclusions and omissions, shows that an ethos of critique, whether based on something “like love” or another guiding principle, is best embodied and enacted rather than strictly systematized. Accordingly, her conversations with artists, writers, and musicians across time and space and across difference follow no rules except the impulse of generosity. By making the problems of the cultural sphere her own, Nelson attempts to live with them without smothering them under the weight of her care. In this way, her criticism is exactly like love.

When he got on a Zoom call last week with the acclaimed writer and critic Maggie Nelson , the director Mike Mills was a bit nervous. “ You intimidate me on a lot of levels,” he confessed. That might have something to do with Nelson’s sensitivity and erudition, which is on full display in her new book Like Love: Essays and Conversations , in which essays, reviews, profiles and interviews with artists, published over a period of two decades, are all collected for the very first time. They range from conversations with Maggie’s longtime pal Eileen Myles , to a discursive fan-to-fan email exchange with Bjork , to an intimate profile of the artist Carolee Schneemann , with whom Nelson spent time in upstate New York. “ It’s a real spiritual practice to empty yourself enough to actually hear what someone’s telling you about their work,” she told Mills, the Oscar-nominated writer and director of delicate family dramas like 20th Century Women and C’mon C’mon . On the day of Nelson’s book release, she and Mills went deep on the meaning of criticism and the utility of language.

MAGGIE NELSON: I’ve done a lot on Zoom this week. It’s really like a PTSD feeling.

MIKE MILLS: Are you in your office?

NELSON: I am in my office.

MILLS: Okay. Let’s talk about your book. It was really fun. In the conversation with Eileen Myles, you talk about the book as the container. As a reader and a fan of yours, I have the same feeling. It’s like, “Oh, I’m getting to see this other side of your practice, your interests, your relationships.” It did really feel like you were cruising around, visiting different friends and people you’ve just met or known forever. I was curious what it was like for you to put that all together. Was it freeing or something, or has it changed things?

NELSON: Before I put it together, I didn’t really think about how it would change things. I’ve been very book-focused and I write a lot of art essays. But the art essays, I write them kind of on the sly and it felt like a free space for me, because I haven’t thought a lot of people read them. They’re just in catalogs and there tends to be a more private transmission between the artist and the gallery or whatever. The idea of the book was like, “These haven’t really been published all together, or I haven’t really conceived of them like that.” 

MILLS: Yeah. It struck me that it refracted back to the different people you were interacting with. It kind of gave me a behind-the-scenes feeling. I love you saying that you feel stupid when you write, like in that Eileen conversation. That was so nice to read as an admirer of yours.

NELSON: That’s nice.

MILLS: Also, the thing about writing where, at one point, it was an empty space or a private space where you could process and find yourself or have this selfhood. And then it was really gone and you’re struggling to recreate this private space. I did get the sense that, in these essays, you’re hiding away in public but you’re very much there.

NELSON: The great thing about writing and art, as you know, is there’s never any hiding. It’s all about tricking yourself into continuing to be an expressive person, because there are anxieties that go with public expression, whether or not you think one person or 1,000 are going to be looking at it. I like that conversation with Eileen, too. We met when I was 19, so it felt very interesting for somebody that was so marked as making all of my beginnings possible, in an early moment of life, to revisit and be like, “Wow, how has this whole life thing been going?

MILLS: Right. I’ve read you talking about Eileen over the years in different contexts and here it gave me that behind-the-scenes quality. I would love to ask you for the whole 45 minutes to try and recreate the private space, because I find that really fascinating. And I was surprised, because in reading your stuff I always feel like you’re very free and not burdened by that. But, of course, everyone is.

NELSON: Right. People have talked about a lot of my books as being dialogic or interpersonal in some way. But you learn how to make things, at least I do, by looking at things that I admire. A lot of the people in this book provoke this deep hunger while I’m in the gallery of understanding their tone. You can’t go home and be like, “How can I do it writing?” Because you’re not them and it’s not the same medium. But this book is a lot of my immersion of these people into my work. I’ve admired things that I’ve been like, “Wow, how would you get that tone?” or “How would you get that orientation or stance?” 

MILLS: I love what Hilton [Als] wrote, which you got the title from. I feel a really similar thing with you and Hilton where sometimes a writer’s facing you and telling you stuff, and often I feel like I’m alongside you and you’re showing me something. You’re along for the ride. He has his arm around you and he’s sort of talking to you about stuff. I love that feeling, especially in the heightened, intelligent space that you both work in. 

NELSON: That’s nice. I really like writers like Hilton where, even within a sentence, you think you’re starting in one place and then you’re happily bewildered by where they’re bringing you.

MILLS: Why did you use that for the title?

NELSON: I wanted this book to be a collection of criticism, broadly defined. But when people hear criticism or they say someone’s a critic, that means evaluative. I wanted to announce that the book had to do with things that I like and love, but that because of the weirdness of Hilton’s phrase, and because of the propulsiveness of what he’s talking about, it’s not a simple version of, “Oh, I love that.” I really liked the web of associations that came with that. Part of my critical practice, starting when I was in graduate school, is that only things I thought were great and needed more light on them merited the powers of my attention. I made that decision early on and I have mostly stuck to it.

MILLS: Right. And within that complicated definition of love, there’s a lot of push and pull. Also, I didn’t really know that much about Carolee Schneemann. I’ve seen some images, but I’m not knowledgeable about her or her work. All that parsing out of your experience with her is so beautiful and interesting. I mean, you describe her tub. It’s just great. Sorry, to be so simple. 

NELSON: No, that’s awesome. I was asked to write a long piece on Carolee, like a retrospective of the work, and they sent me up there, so I got to spend some time with her. A lot of my other writing about art is more like, I go to the gallery, go to the studio, get the slides, get the press materials, do my own research, but this was different. So, the tub matters and us going out for dinner matters.

MILLS: You made me just so interested in this person.

NELSON: I’m so glad. It really matters a lot for Carolee, because she had a lot of cultural capital and was always talked about as one of the most famous feminist performance artists, alongside Marina Abromovic and Yoko Ono. But it didn’t translate, as it so often the case, into money for Carolee. It’s also really important, because people sometimes think that she didn’t want all that, but of course she wanted all that. And then you get into this career where everyone’s lauding you for precisely this thing that has been really difficult, which is not being attractive to any promotional machines. So, there’s a paradox there as well. One of the really interesting things about writing about other people’s art is the tension between wanting to and having to write about what you got from the work. I make an analogy with Alice Notley talking about when people say, “Well, you’re such a feminist, why are you always writing about men?” And she says, “My dead are men, and I need to talk to them.” There’s a poignancy and a lot of energy there that I find very moving.

MILLS: Yeah. Sticking with Carolee for one more minute, you’re in this conversation with her and you use the word precarity. It seems you’re often drawn to precarity or–

NELSON: Maybe, yeah. Maybe I’m working something out. It kind of brings us to the conversation with Jacqueline Rose and how she’s all about holding these ambivalences or contradictory or things that make us feel precarious because they can’t be resolved. I was really happy to talk to her because she’s so articulate about that in her work. I really wanted to take the opportunity to ask her to define thinking, in this context, as really just being able to hold contradictory things like feelings. And then, because she’s a psycho-socio-political critic, linking that to fascism resistance and the promises that the neo-fascist makes, that there will be an end to the agony and joy via a process of scapegoating and repression. The things that cause us distress can be dealt with. So the book is not about that; the book is about art, but it helps me to be around these people and their work. It helps me to feel like all that can be held and it won’t tear us apart.

MILLS: Mm-hmm. Often, when I’m reading you, I feel a couple things. One is, “Wow, I’m really with this person thinking”—and it’s this very physical act. And it was interesting in the Eileen Myles conversation you’re like, “Ideas are like concrete objects in your mind, like furniture that you can move around in a room.” And I felt like, “Exactly, I feel like I’m in that room.” But then, sometimes there’s this great attention to your love of language from a poet’s background. The way your appreciation for Hilton was captured by words is really pronounced. 

NELSON: In everything that I write, even if it’s very lyrical or autobiographical, there’s something that you need to say, and saying it in language that’s pleasing is kind of the secondary goal. With some of these essays, I want them to have precision and hopefully the pleasure of language. But it’s not the very first thing in the order of business.

MILLS: Right. Someone needs to turn the Bjork piece into a play or something, because that’s another delight of the book. It’s great to see you at all these different places and the way that Bjork is speaking to you. And I love that you spoke back in your way. It was like a direct letter to her. You used everything in your toolbox and she wrote very much from her own toolbox. 

NELSON: Yeah. We have different idioms, for sure. 

MILLS: But each piece is very precise and articulate and honest, and also it’s fun to read you guys fan out on each other. It’s important for all of us to see. It’s a silly, weird way of feeling community.

NELSON: Yeah. When I titled all these pieces, I picked different titles for them than how they may have originally traveled. I mean, another big danger when writing about art is you see their art, and then you see a flicker of one of your hobby horses pass by, and then you kind of distort their whole project to this thing you have in mind. I noticed common themes when I put the book together, and sometimes I had to take out paragraphs from different people’s essays where I was clearly working on the same topic in multiple ways. Not to sound too hokey, but it’s a real spiritual practice to empty yourself enough to actually hear what someone’s telling you about their work.

MILLS: Yeah. Because, one of your themes is attention and care and trying to understand others and understand differences. It seems like you’re drawn to people with a talent for blurring, messing with categorizations. That keeps coming up in a way that I find liberating, interesting, and nurturing. It’s like you’re feeding yourself on all these things. You’re finding little bits of nutrients that reflect your interests but are also different.

NELSON: Yeah. There’s that moment in the Hilton Als essay where I’m saying, “How do you do this?” And then I say, “Well, one good answer is read Hilton Als.” There isn’t really a philosophical or ethical edict like: “How do you do it? You do it like X.” Art is the practice of making manifest. So you look at what shape things into being in and what they sound like and what work they do.

MILLS: Yeah. You keep saying this is a collection of essays about art, and you always surprise me every time you say it, because I’m like, “It’s a bunch of portraits of people’s thought practices and life-ways and bodies in mental and physical structure.” 

NELSON: Yeah, and it’s definitely not all about art. Do you have any other burning questions or things we didn’t hit?

MILLS: No. I want to take a class with you.

NELSON: Oh my gosh. Well, that’s really nice. I feel convinced that this will be my favorite conversation about this book, so I appreciate it. I mean it.

MILLS: It was fun to be nervous. You intimidate me on a lot of levels.

NELSON: Oh, give me a break.

My dying wife hoped to inspire people with her essay. They ended up inspiring her.

The letters began arriving months ago at our house and in our inboxes. By my count there are more than 500 of them, and that’s just from strangers.

People were writing to my wife, Amy Ettinger, who died last month at age 49. You might know Amy from her words in these pages about the end of her life .

Not everyone has moments of clarity when they find out they are dying. My wife did.

Her aggressive cancer had winnowed her body, and her strength was so limited that she dictated the essay to me in a sunlit glass-lined reading room at the University of California at Santa Cruz rather than typing it out herself.

As we overlooked a redwood forest, Amy had no way of predicting that the lines she composed on the spot would be calls to action for readers from all over the United States, as well as Canada, Poland, France and Greece.

She was flooded with responses to her essay, which essentially asked: What would your life look like if you cared much less about what other people think of you?

Could life be “a series of moments,” and not the endless pursuit of stability over bliss, or working for some long-delayed dream of post-retirement fulfillment?

Amy had a history of embracing creative risk and adventure, and wrote how putting friends and family first allowed her to face her terminal cancer diagnosis with a deep gratitude for the life she loved.

“Lasting love is about finding someone who will show up for you,” Amy wrote.

And also: “I’ve always tried to say ‘yes’ to the voice that tells me I should go out and do something now, even when that decision seems wildly impractical.”

Her essay touched people near and very far, and for reasons that surprised us, strangers wanted to connect with her before she died. They wanted to share their own stories and gratitude with her.

It offered her a comfort she did not know she needed.

Here are some of the ones that moved her the most.

“I live in a small town in Idaho that is full of hate, and after reading your story, I need to sell and move!” one message read.

Another reader wrote that he felt trapped on a corporate career ladder and was feeling anxious, which was stressing his mental health and close relationships.

“I have 10 chapters of a weird and wonderful novel and haven’t done anything with that in months even though it would probably only take a few solid weeks to finish writing it,” he wrote. “I will carry a tiny piece of your intrepid creative spirit with me as I rearrange my priorities in honor of remembering what’s truly important in life (which … isn’t corporate America).”

For one Los Angeles-based reader, Amy’s column was the tipping point that made him go ahead and book an endlessly postponed trip and reunion with loved ones.

“You helped me to realize I have said NO to too many life-affirming memories, even as our family has experienced a lot of loss over the years,” the reader said. “I am going to let my wife, daughter and son know that I will take that trip to Kastoria, Greece, home of their paternal ancestors, most of whom were taken to the camps during World War II. We will spend wonderful family time in a beautiful place and thank our family who came before us for their sacrifices. And I will think of you and say a prayer and send my eternal gratitude.”

Other readers spoke of lives crammed with tedious complications, from high-maintenance people to useless possessions.

One such reader thanked Amy for “really driving home [the] message to stop faffing around with crap that doesn’t matter and make the most of whatever time I have left. During the past few years of loss, dislocation, and general global craziness, I’ve forgotten this and come pretty close to giving up—on writing, yes, but more than that, on living. Sure, I drag through the motions for the sake of the people I love, but in a way that thumbs a nose at the monumental gift that life truly is. Your story and, again, your utmost humanity in sharing it have flipped a switch in me, and for that, I sincerely and ardently thank you.”

Some readers said the essay helped them realize that moments of joy and repose can lead to resilience in the midst of suffering. If Amy was dealing with Stage 4 cancer and could find so much light in her life, what was their excuse, anyway?

“Oh, how I cried and cried,” one reader said about reading Amy’s essay. “I then printed it out and placed it in my Bible. It’ll stay there so when I’m ready to give up on life again, I’ll read it and keep going.”

But the message that touched Amy beyond the others came from someone she knew, journalist Dania Akkad , who remembered an intervention Amy made on her behalf while working as a reporter for a California newspaper in the early 2000s. Akkad was an intern at the paper .

“We had a writing coach visit that summer,” Akkad recalled. “Long story short, you overheard me in the bathroom saying he’d made a pass at me when I had a meeting to discuss my reporting career (well at least that’s what I thought it was!). You came out of the bathroom stall and you said if I didn’t report this to management, you would.”

“It all felt so embarrassing and awkward and, well, my fault!” Akkad wrote. “Anyway, I did go to management largely because you put the pressure on. However many years later, I am so glad to have done that - and so grateful you interceded in that moment. It’s a fork-in-the-road event that has informed how I respond to this kind of crap. A real teaching moment. So thank you so very much. And thank you too for writing so lucidly about your experience now.”

Not all the notes were that lovely. Inevitably, a few were unwelcome, including missives from ultrareligious people wanting my proudly Jewish wife to get saved to spare herself from hellfire. And she smiled at the messages promoting quack remedies.

The many grateful responses prove that even now, in this era of online trolls and fake feedback generated by bots, engaged and thoughtful people really can make a difference by reaching out, human to human.

She carried this with her in her final weeks as she’d sit with me watching a great blue heron circling the sky over Santa Cruz Harbor. Or pulling up her favorite chair and watching the skateboarders, dog walkers and street basketball players on the other side of her picture window.

In this way, she embodied the spirit of her words. “I have never had a bucket list,” she wrote. “Instead, I said ‘yes’ to life.”

I Did Ketamine Therapy to Heal My Heartbreak — and It Worked

Having been in long-term relationships since age 16, I have experienced my fair share of heartbreak. But this last one hit differently. For the first time, a breakup caused me to retroactively doubt the sincerity of our time together, and to seriously question my ability to trust myself.

For almost a year and a half, we regularly acknowledged that this was the best and most intimate relationship either of us had had. He told me he'd never been so close to another person, and that this was the first time he ever trusted a partner or felt so loved and cared for. We communicated deeply and supported each other; it felt like having a true partner.

Then, everything changed. After a particularly great weekend together, he called me in a fit of anxiety and a jarring departure from his previous words, behaviors, and actions. After 12 hours of tears, he concluded that he did not — and worse, that he never did — have deep feelings for me, even as friends. He said he had only been trying to convince himself he loved me, among other things that made me feel utterly objectified.

I was shattered. This person I loved and trusted was not who I had believed him to be. My life, which had been closely intertwined with his, no longer felt like it fit. Being in my home, which we had seen for the first time together, and which was filled with his belongings and gifts he brought me back from Italy two weeks before, no longer felt like "home."

The aftermath of this shock was tortuous, and I knew it would change me irrevocably. Still, determined not to let this derail my career and life, I left to stay with my favorite aunt in Florida. This ultimately led me to ketamine therapy , which I now call "the heartbreak drug."

The Discard

Based on my former career as a therapist, I had never been more concerned for my emotional well-being. Even the ending of an eight-year relationship had not impacted me so severely. My ex's switch from hot to cold invalidated my reality and plagued me with a loss of emotional security. The shock left me with physical symptoms that terrified me: I completely lost my appetite and shrank down to 94 lbs, I kept waking up in the night, and I could not focus on my writing or enjoy my usual hobbies.

It turns out this type of breakup is known as a "discard," which is associated with avoidant attachment styles . (My ex and I believed he had a fearful avoidant/disorganized attachment style based on research and conversations with a therapist.)

"Breakups are different from discards," certified relationship coach Ryan Holley says. "[Usually] breakups are not blindsiding, and there's been a winding down of the relationship. Discards are unilateral, happening quickly and seemingly out of nowhere." Josh Lichtman, board-certified psychiatrist and medical director at Pulse TMS and Neuro Wellness Spa , says the discard often traumatizes partners, "as it can shock the individual's emotional system and significantly affect their sense of self-worth and security."

The First Month of Heartbreak

The first month following the discard was the worst of my life. The thought of returning home to California gave me severe anxiety. I had barely worn anything other than leggings, or washed my face, in weeks, which is saying a lot for a beauty editor. Mentally, I was exhausted by inner turmoil. Aside from grieving and missing my partner, I felt fractured inside, having lost self-trust, wondering how I could have been so wrong for so long. Thanks to Holley, I now know this is a common post-discard symptom: self-blame.

Dr. Lichtman explains that intense heartbreak often impacts patients on the physical, emotional, and functional levels, from insomnia and appetite changes to grief, anhedonia, and rumination, for several months up to a year. "Functionally, this can impair one's ability to work, maintain social relationships, and carry out daily activities, leading to a significant decline in overall quality of life," he says. Holley elaborates that being discarded can push a partner into a prolonged fight-or-flight state, hence my cortisol-fueled distress.

Only my impatience surpassed my sadness; I was determined to heal thoroughly but quickly. I was willing and eager to do the work — to feel intensely and process it — but desperate not to let it go on for several months. I threw myself into a healing journey, booking a session with the renowned celebrity shaman Shaman Durek , and even trying an accelerated protocol of Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation (SAINT TMS). I attended therapy, listened to the "Expanded Podcast" by To Be Magnetic, regularly journaled, practiced breathwork , and did meditations by Dr. Joe Dispenza. I was making progress, but I needed a breakthrough.

Month 2: Ketamine Therapy

I spent the first month falling apart, but spent my second rebuilding. After three weeks in Florida, I went to stay at my mom's remote ranch in Abiquiu, NM. There, I visited the office of emergency medicine doctor and ketamine expert David Rosen, MD, of Blue Sky Ketamine in Santa Fe and decided to undergo a series of ketamine IVs.

Having first studied the brain and neuroplasticity — what neuroscientist and MD Tara Swart refers to as the brain's lifelong ability to adapt at the neuronal level — at Columbia University in my 20s, I was fascinated by research on psychedelics helping patients recover and heal from trauma. Dr. Lichtman explains that ketamine helps patients "detach from the immediate, intense emotional pain and gain new perspectives on their experience." This shift creates new neural pathways in the brain from a non-emotionally-activated state, which "is crucial to how individuals adjust to and recover from emotional trauma." Neuroscientist and psychiatrist Dave Rabin , PhD, confirms the "therapeutic, drug-induced dream state is helpful for overcoming depression and trauma, including the trauma with breakups."

Buffered by the dissociative effects of ketamine, my brain could reprocess the experience from a nonactivated state. Dr. Rabin explains that ketamine also releases trauma that is otherwise stored in the body causing long-term, conditioned effects . This would interrupt the feedback loop between thought, emotion, and physiological response that was fueling my psychosomatic symptoms like my loss of appetite.

My Ketamine Therapy Experience

I opted for a series of IV infusions, which Dr. Lichtman refers to as the "gold standard." My goal was to undergo roughly five 50-minute IV infusions to "reset" my brain before returning to California. It sounded too good to be true, but I was willing to try. Dr. Rosen encouraged me to continue my therapy and neuroplasticity-promoting practices like breathwork and meditation . I also took a lot of time to speak to friends and cuddle my dog.

During my intake appointment, we reviewed my health history, and I explained how my recent breakup was impacting me. It was hard to put into words that I was essentially a shell of myself and could not resume my life as before in my current state. Dr. Rosen was calm and confident, relaying encouraging statistics from emerging research, but nothing boosted my morale — until I experienced it myself.

Once treatments started, I chose to fast on mornings before my IVs to eliminate chances of nausea. I wore comfortable clothes — leggings, a sweatshirt, and Converse sneakers — and packed snacks for afterward. They checked my blood pressure and oxygen levels, and I was offered anti-nausea medication (which I accepted) and anti-anxiety medicine (which I declined). A nurse would then set up my IV as I settled into a recliner with blankets, a playlist (I opted for Sigur Ros), noise-canceling headphones, and an eye mask. When it was time to begin my infusion, Dr. Rosen would check in with me and answer my (many) questions. Then he would start the infusion and dim the lights, which was my cue to pull down my eye mask, play my music, and relax.

The experience is highly visual, like an immersive ride at Disneyland.

To be clear, this was not a micro-dose; I was hallucinating and sedated in a medically facilitated K-hole. I lost awareness of my physical surroundings and turned my attention within. The experience is highly visual, with different scenery, textures, and colors, including sensations of movement, changes in visual perspective, and sounds, like an immersive ride at Disneyland. During one session, I felt like a bee, buzzing and hovering around; in others, I saw everything from my dog to aliens, and felt sensations like floating, expanding, and flying.

Sensory distortions aside, I was mentally cognizant and emotionally aware. I remembered the relationship and its demise, but with calm acceptance and no trace of grief or confusion. At times my mind wandered to other topics, like my brain was getting a "spring cleaning" by reworking other memories.

Each time I woke up, I was groggy, but the physical symptoms of stress were alleviated. I regained my appetite immediately, and the queasy feeling in my stomach ultimately went away. I usually felt the elevating emotional impact of each infusion the next day. Each infusion was similar to having a weeklong vacation crammed into 50 minutes. My therapist and I both noticed how rapidly I was making emotional progress, and I was able to conduct and write up a celebrity interview on a day off between infusions.

I went into my sessions with specific goals in mind, like detaching from the relationship, anchoring myself into the present, and feeling excited about my future — mostly because I dreaded the idea of longing for the past. I also set emotional intentions, like developing a state of calm receptivity (as opposed to wanting to control outcomes), and reconnecting with my passions, like my career. During sessions, I imagined that expansive imagery was a representation of new neural pathways forming; more than once, I sat atop a foamy pink substance, and it expanded.

Some sessions also inspired me to take action, like booking a trip. Persistent, London-themed imagery appeared at two consecutive appointments until I consciously decided to book it. In London with my friend Diane, I genuinely had fun and felt like myself again, entering what my friend, astrologer Marie Satori , dubbed my "glow up" era. These experiences helped me rebuild my trust in myself and my intuition.

So, Can Ketamine Therapy "Biohack" Heartbreak?

After getting back from London at two months post-discard, I had officially moved on. I am happy, reinvested in my career, excited for my future, and ready to date again. I went into my treatment doubtful, but feel that the treatment helped me leverage it into personal growth. I can say unequivocally that ketamine helped me heal my worst-ever heartbreak, and I can always go back for intermittent "booster" infusions if needed.

I am most amazed by ketamine infusions' rapidity and efficacy for rehabituating from trauma, and wondered whether I might have "biohacked" heartbreak. "You can absolutely biohack heartbreak and trauma with a little help from psychedelics," says Dave Asprey , entrepreneur and author. "Biohacking is all about taking control of your own biology to get the best results in the least amount of time. [Ketamine facilitates this] in far less time than [neuroplasticity-enhancing modalities like] meditating, doing breathwork, or working with a therapist alone."

As Asprey puts it, "more neuroplasticity means more progress in less time" — and that is exactly what I set out to do. But even though this is a medically administered medication (which is on the World Health Organization's List of Essential Medicines), there is a lot of stigma around the topic. People often ask me if I was afraid before my treatments, and the answer is no. I was afraid of the potential detriment to my life if I didn't give healing my best shot.

Essay: The Lost Art of Cursive

Writer Marisa Panella describes her love of cursive and it’s impact on her.

Like many, I get distracted easily.

I keep my devices on Do Not Disturb but when there is a lull in class, I’m often tempted to shop online, reply to messages or even finish The New York Times Connections puzzle I forgot to do earlier on the laptop sitting in front of me. 

As a multimedia journalism major, I’m required to spend much of my time typing. But recently I’ve found myself reverting back to the ancient art of handwriting — more specifically, writing in cursive. I carry around a spiral notebook and my favorite BIC Round Stic pens everywhere I go. Whenever the opportunity presents itself, I choose to write. 

I was first taught how to write in cursive in second grade. At that point in my life, it was a painstaking horror as I had to remember the funny little squiggles that somehow resembled letters. Don’t even get me started on how a cursive lowercase R looks way too much like an N — that one confused me for longer than I care to admit. 

Nevertheless, I learned. It helped that my grandpa was also rather fond of cursive. He was a teacher for years and never stopped loving it. When I was a kid, he used to have me complete writing packets and offered money as an incentive for good work and steady improvement. He would help me write short essays and trace letters, trying to mimic his flawless cursive script. 

I adored receiving handwritten cards from him for my birthdays and achievements — always signed with “G-Pa” in curved lettering. I love that I have the skill to do the same for my loved ones. 

In elementary schools these days, kids are taught to type. This curriculum typically starts around third grade, according to US News . While it makes sense in our day and age of technology, there’s an art to handwriting in cursive that I’ll always be fond of. Handwriting tells a story and cursive is one of gentle curls and timeless elegance. 

From time to time I’ll scribble a heartfelt “I love you” or my signature at the bottom of a card, but more often I bring my cursive to the classroom. It keeps me focused and gives me something to do. It’s helped me to be an active listener in a technology-driven world. I wrote in print when I first switched to handwritten notes, but cursive is swift and speed-driven — allowing me to keep up with the typers on either side of me. 

My notes look like a half-print-half-cursive mess to the naked eye, but my jumbled lettering brings me joy. Cursive holds love in my life. It reminds me of childhood. It’s a minuscule piece of art done with simple paper and pen. 

With that said, no professor will accept a handwritten cursive article, and I can’t send a cursive text from my computer but when my mom’s birthday comes around, she’ll be getting a scribbled cursive note — just like the one my dad got three weeks ago that he claimed was “hard to read.” My friends will get cursive Valentines and my brothers will receive cards of encouragement crafted in my script. 

Outdated or not, it’s a lost art, a way I show my love and a skill I’ll never take for granted.
