Organizing international sporting extravaganzas like the Olympic Games or the FIFA World Cup undoubtedly demands substantial financial investments. While some argue that such expenditures are wasteful, others contend that they bring considerable benefits to the host country. This essay will thoroughly discuss both viewpoints before concluding that I am in favor of the former.

Admittedly, proponents of hosting international sports events may argue that the benefits outweigh the costs. The key rationale behind this thinking is that these events can significantly boost a nation’s tourism industry, stimulate local economies, and create numerous job opportunities. For example, the 2016 Rio Olympics drew millions of tourists, injecting billions into the Brazilian economy and providing thousands of jobs in the process. This underscores the belief that hosting such events can be a sound economic investment. 

However, I side with those who claim that the organization of global sports events is not a prudent financial investment. This is because the exorbitant costs associated with constructing state-of-the-art stadiums and upgrading infrastructure can place an immense strain on a nation’s budget. For example, the 2004 Athens Olympics left Greece grappling with significant debt due to overspending on infrastructure projects, burdening the country’s finances for years to come. Additionally, global-scale sports events often result in underutilized facilities once they conclude, giving rise to maintenance expenses that further drain public funds. This can be seen in the case of the 2016 Rio Olympics, where some venues were left unused, necessitating ongoing maintenance funded by taxpayers. The unfulfilled promise of repurposing these facilities for community use exacerbates the financial strain on the host city.

In conclusion, I feel that hosting international sports events is often a wasteful financial endeavor. While there are potential benefits, the enormous costs, long-term financial burdens, and underutilized amenities typically overshadow these gains.

Some people think that hosting an international sporting event is beneficial for a country, while others disagree. Do the advantages of hosting a major sporting event outweigh its disadvantages?

Sample Band 8 Essay

International sporting events are well-known for attracting a high level of attention because they give many people something to look forward to. Understandably, there are advantages and disadvantages for the host country, and careful consideration is required to determine whether a nation will benefit or lose from hosting a major sports championship.

Worryingly, the new infrastructure required for hosting a major sporting event often comes at the expense of local people. Their lives get disrupted by construction works and at times residents have even been evicted from their homes for stadiums to be built. Worse still, practice shows the expensive, gigantic buildings constructed for the sports event aren’t being used afterwards and fall into disrepair, leaving the country with high maintenance bills. The financial burden from hosting the Olympic Games, for example, is staggering and can run into tens of billions. Still, the question remains whether or not the pros outnumber the cons.

It is hard to underestimate the amount of influence on the country’s global status and prestige that comes with becoming a home to an international sporting event. New trade opportunities appear on the horizon, as it happened for many countries that hosted the Olympic Games. There is also a welcome increase in tourism, which gives the local economy a boost, injecting billions of dollars into the national budget. Construction of new stadiums, hotels and infrastructure such as new roads and rail links creates new jobs, further improving the country’s economy. Less tangible but still important is the aspect of national pride and the feel-good factor associated with hosting an international sports event.

All in all, it seems to me that an international sporting event can bring more good than harm to a country, especially if its potential dangers can be avoided or minimised. Hosting a World Championship is a one-in-a-lifetime opportunity for a country and an immense source of pride for its citizens.

Teacher’s comment: The writer provided a complete response to the task prompt and offered elaborated and convincing ideas that fully meet the task’s requirements. He/she maintained coherence throughout the essay, logically organised the ideas and arguments, and made effective use of paragraphing. The vocabulary is diverse and uncommon lexical items have been used appropriately, with almost no errors in word choice or collocation. The bulk of the sentences are error-free, and the writer has used a variety of linguistic constructions. These components work together flawlessly and make Band 8 – 8.5 very likely for this essay.

Some people believe that international sporting events are the ideal opportunity to show the world the qualities of the hosting nation. Others believe that these events are mainly a large unjustifiable expense. To what extent do you agree or disagree?

Global athletic events such as the Olympics, the World Cup, the Extreme Games, and even the American Super Bowl are incredible opportunities for countries. These iconic spectacles can provide a country with an economic avalanche of benefits or expose it to a public relations disaster. This essay will look at both points, using Russia and the United Kingdom as examples.

Firstly, it is important to bear in mind that simply hosting the event and having the world’s media attention cannot guarantee a positive promotion. This is because although the country is receiving enormous amounts of publicity, the media will often report controversial news as well as.

Take the Winter Olympics in Sochi, Russia, for example. The media spotlight is shining bright on the athletes but also highlighting the polemic legislation regarding homosexuality. Therefore, despite the international recognition to be gained, the country can also face a possible backlash.

Secondly, the expense of building large infrastructures necessary to hold these events can dwarf the benefits, unless they are fully amortized afterwards. This is largely due to the fact that stadiums, Olympic parks, ski runs etc. are expensive to construct and undertake large capital expenditure, often by the public sector.

In the Commonwealth Games in Manchester in 2002, the council commissioned a stadium for athletic events which was later adapted and sold to the local preeminent football club, Manchester City. Therefore with proper, fair, economic management of such buildings and facilities the cost can be recuperated.

To conclude, a host city or nation has a lot to gain from these events but only if they are economically administered correctly and the country has no controversial issues for the media to pull out of the closet.

Band 9 IELTS Essay Sample

Major sports events like Olympics and World Cup Football Championship generate considerable interest all over the world. People all over the world watch them and support their teams with great fervour. Some people believe that such events are essential for easing tension between countries. I fully agree with this view.

Sports have always brought people together. The Greeks who started the Olympics used to even halt wars to take part in these events. Even today, wars and conflicts take a back seat when there is a major sporting event like World Cup or Olympics. That is because the soldiers who fight the wars also want to watch these games. Consequently a sense of calm prevails all over the world during such events.

Sporting events also give people a safe opportunity to express their patriotism. When people support their teams they forget their regional identities and think of themselves as one. For example, when there is a cricket match between India and Pakistan the whole of Indians come together to root for their team. People forget their regional identities and other differences and become one. For spectators, supporting their own team is also a great way to express their patriotism. When their team defeats the rival team in the World Cup, people experience the same exhilaration that they would experience if their country had won a war. However, unlike a war, sporting events do not lead to bloodshed. In other words, supporting one’s team in a sporting event is a safe and peaceful way to give vent to patriotic feelings.

To conclude, major sporting events bring people together and help reduce tension among countries. They are also a safe way to express feelings of patriotism.

To what extent do you agree or disagree with this opinion?

You should write at least 250 words.

In the (article) times of visceral hatred and occurrences of terrorist attacks, sporting events like (article) Olympics and World Cup could play a vital role to instil the sense of peace and harmony amongst many nations. While it is (article) excellent idea for building good relationships among countries and increasing (article) sense of brotherhood in patriots, history has also some occasions of dark days triggered by this (referencing) international sporting events.

To begin with, (article) world seems to stop to watch World Cup (plural) , for example, cricket, (conjunction) football (FIFA). This clearly shows the utmost importance of these matches and even countries having internal disputes also participate in order to prove them (wrong word/referencing error) best globally. Because of this, people of the respective nations tend to come closer, (sentence control) to take an (wrong article) example of India and Pakistan, players can be seen to exhibit great humanity and ethics during play (So… explain the importance of this in international relationships) . Thus, these types of international sporting events contribute (explain how) to a great level to combat tensions.

Another aspect in this argument is admirers (word choice) travel to distinct places to cheer up (wrong word) their national team. In this scenario, it offers an opportunity (to do what?) for supporters, especially of the winning team, and it becomes a moment of proud (word form) as gaining international recognisation (spelling) across the globe. Therefore, people can be patriots in (article) true sense. Nevertheless, history has observed some occassions (spelling) of bloodsheds (uncountable) and disruption (word choice) of government properties by the same in case of failures. To cite an example, there had been (tense) cases of personal physical abuses and demolishing (unusual word choice) of public properties in the place (which place in India?) in India.

To sum up, it can be inferred from (article) above arguments the sports matches and international sports competitions can be essential in bringing together and developing brotherhoodness (spelling) among people and nations as well, but it must be organised by considering this risk factor involved in them.

Task Achievement

All parts of the topic are clearly answered, including a clear statement that these events are essential, as well as the points of easing of international tensions, releasing of patriotic emotions and safety.

A few ideas could be more fully extended, which limits the task achievement to band 7, as these points prevent the answer from meeting the band 8 requirement of a ‘well-developed’ response. This could be fixed with a few more sentences to completely develop and extend the main ideas.

• Addresses all parts of the task
• Presents a clear position throughout the response
• Presents, extends and supports main ideas, but there may be a tendency to over-generalise and/or supporting ideas may lack focus

Coherence and cohesion

There are some great examples of coherence here. The writer uses cohesive devices well and there is clear progression.

There are a few points which are a little unclear (e.g. demolishing of public properties in the place – which place?) and a missing conjunction (these are and/or/but/so etc.) – giving underuse of transitions.

There are a couple of very minor referencing errors (using ‘this’ when the writer should use ‘these’ / ‘them’ vs ‘themselves’). Despite these errors, referencing is clear and appropriate, which prevents the essay from being pushed down to band 6 as it is clear what the intended meaning is (see the band 6 descriptor ‘may not always use referencing clearly / appropriately’).

• Logically organises information and ideas; there is clear progression throughout
• Uses a range of cohesive devices appropriately although there may be some under-/over-use
• Presents a clear central topic within each paragraph

Lexical Resource 

precision in the way vocabulary is used, and there is definitely an awareness of style and collocation. Here are a few examples of good vocabulary:

• A vital role
• A sense of peace and harmony
• Sense of brotherhood
• Utmost importance
• Combat tensions

Word choices are appropriate and contribute to a good, formal academic writing style. Some word choices are a bit awkward or unusual for the essay.

• Visceral hatred – good vocabulary, but a bit strange in this essay
• Some occasions of dark days – this sounds a bit strange and affects the style
• Demolishing public properties (sounds a bit strange – vandalising is better)

There are a few mistakes with word form, word choice and spelling. There aren’t many word choice errors, meeting the band 7 descriptor ‘may produce occasional errors in word choice, spelling and/or word formation’. The intended meaning is always clear.

Some examples are listed below:

• Internal disputes (word choice error – the writer clearly meant to say disputes between countries – international disputes)
• Cheer up their team = the team is sad and could be happier… ? (Cheer on their team)
• A moment of proud as gaining… (word form error – proud = adjective, pride = noun)
• Recognisation (spelling error/invented word – recognition)
• Occassions (spelling error – occasions)
• Brotherhoodness (spelling error/invented word – brotherhood)

One other important point to think about in this task is the lack of adverbs to describe the data. This is not ‘ raw data’ (exact figures) as you would find in a table. So, the writer could have used words like ‘approximately ’ ‘ almost ’ or ‘ just above/below’ to make the information more accurate .

• Uses a sufficient range of vocabulary to allow some flexibility and precision
• Uses less common lexical items with some awareness of style and collocation
• May produce occasional errors in word choice, spelling and/or word formation

There is a great range of grammar, with good complexity. Mistakes do not reduce meaning and overall, there is some good grammatical control. There are ‘frequent error-free sentences’, but the writer is at risk of going down a band score for grammar because just a few more errors would push this down a band score. Most of the errors occur in the introduction and first body paragraph (word forms are considered lexical errors), which justifies ‘frequent error-free sentences.

Among the errors here, the most obvious are with articles (a/an/the) – they are not always used appropriately (missing in most cases, not required in one case).

• Uses a variety of complex structures
• Produces frequent error-free sentences
• Has good control of grammar and punctuation but may make a few errors

So, that finishes this analysis of IELTS writing task 2 band 7 essay discussing international sports events. Although this essay is quite close to the line, if the writer can clear up some of the grammar mistakes, fix the minor coherence issues and make sure they develop their ideas fully, they should feel quite pleased with their score!

Task 2 Essay: International Sports Events

Question: Some people think that hosting international sports events is good for the country, while some people think it is bad. Discuss both views and state your opinion. (Test Date: 9/11/2020?)

Band 8+ Sample Answer:

(Intro) International sporting events have become increasingly common in recent decades. While some people reckon that host countries might have to deal with a sudden surge in crime or involve themselves in an exhausting preparation process, more importantly I believe they can take the opportunity to boost tourism.

(Body 1) To begin with, although events such as these are a great opportunity for countries to gain global exposure, they are present significant challenges. Firstly, records have shown that there is a two folds increase in crimes such as prostitution and petty theft when a country organises an event such as the World Cup or the Olympics. Furthermore, the process of preparing for these events is often demanding. For the World Cup 2014, it took Brazil five years to revitalise its cities and build the necessary infrastructure including world-class stadiums and training facilities to meet high standards set by FIFA.

(Body 2) On the other hand, I am of the opinion that international sporting games can potentially stimulate the tourism sector. By being the host, a country is able to attract a large array of athletes and their supporters from all around the world. This sudden increase in visitors will likely proliferate the sales of products and services such as accommodation and transportation within the period of the events. In the longer term, it is a great chance for the host nations to promote their culture on a global stage. For example, since the pictures of beautifully garnished Vietnamese dishes made headlines during the SEA Games in 2003, Vietnam has been branded the “Kitchen of the world” and a must visit destination for global food lovers. This obviously does wonders for the Vietnamese economy.

(Conclusion) In conclusion, although sports events come at the expense of a few short term problems, the benefits of boosted gross sales and cultural promotion are of greater significance. Host nations can also consider the option of sharing an event with a neighbouring country to spread the risk and still enjoy the lucrative long term benefits. (335 words)

Nowadays, many countries are organising mega sports events to improve its economic growth. Some people favours the concept of hosting international sports event by a country, whereas, others believe it is just a waste of time and money. There are valid opinions to weigh both the sides of the discussion, which I will consider in the following paragraphs.

On one hand, it helps in providing an astounding improvement in the infrastructure of the city where the event is being organised. It also builds reputation and dignity of the host country all over the world. Then, it encourages tourism  and creates bright avenues of employment . Moreover, the host country also earns very high revenue by selling tickets of the event. Eventually, arranging international sports events boost the economy of the host country.

On the other hand, such mega events adversely affect daily life of the citizens. Government spends huge amount of money in building temporary infrastructure to provide basic amenities and security to the visitors. Moreover, government further recovers this amount from the residents of the country in the form of direct and indirect taxes.By any chance, if the event does not happen smoothly, it brings blemishes to the prestige of the host country.

Overall, I think, in recent years the people’s perception and attitudes have completely changed. Earlier sports industry was least preferred and underrated. But now, due to heavy investments and higher returns, it has become the most lucrative and desirable sector worldwide. Different communities worldwide have started giving respect and recognition to sports and the players as well. Therefore, in order to bring name and fame along with some financial benefits, hosting international events is profitable and acceptable.

It is a well-known fact that the idea of sports can be a magnificent approach to address and ameliorate sensitive issues. In the past, republics have been known to settle controversial situations through the medium of sports. Thus, it is widely believed that global sports events are a remarkable avenue to maintain world peace and harmony. I am a strong supporter of this notion. In the following paragraphs, I will delve deeper into the topic and justify my views with relevant instances.

First of all, we must acknowledge the ability of sports in bringing people together. Regardless of caste, creed , race or gender, sports enthusiasts recognize each other’s passion and love for their favourite game and the players. The realm of sports is a model for being tolerant of the differences between people and showcasing positive values and sportsmanship. One of the prime examples of this is the Olympic Games which are held every four years. It is an international multi-sport event where nations from all over the globe take part in and display the prowess of their nationals in various sporting contests. These competitions are an outstanding platform for athletes to exhibit their talents and also for the entire world to appreciate these individuals and their nations.

Furthermore, international sports have a positive impact on the citizens of nations as well. There is no doubt that every democracy has numerous difficulties that they suffer from, and sports serve as a healthy distraction for the people of a country. When the national team of any sport performs well in international competitions and tournaments, the spirit of the entire nation is elevated. Additionally, such inter-nation sports tournaments also attract a lot of foreign investment, thereby bringing in economic as well as an amalgamation of cultures.

Although, sometimes, the emotions of sports fans get the better of them and unfavourable outcomes even spark controversy. Nevertheless, the overall impact of sports is far more optimistic to consider little bickering , which the management can regulate.

Finally, I would like to add that international sports are essential for maintaining cordial relations between nations, as well as keeping the general populace of a country content.

Meaning: giving rise or likely to give rise to controversy or public disagreement. Eg: The controversial remarks of the Prime Minister were unexpected.

Meaning: research or make inquiries into something. Eg: The detectives delved deeper into the case as more time passed.

Meaning : a system of religious belief; a faith. Eg: People from diverse creeds and cultures reside in India.

Meaning: most suitable or likely. Eg: He was a prime candidate for the space program.

Meaning: skill or expertise in a particular activity or field. Eg: The teacher’s prowess in Physics was remarkable.

• Amalgamation 

Meaning: the action, process, or result of combining or uniting. Eg: I like to see the amalgamation of ideas and efforts when an event is organized at our office.

Meaning: give rise to; cause Eg: The election results sparked nationwide riots.

Meaning: to argue about petty and trivial matters Eg: The shopkeeper and the customer were bickering on the prices of vegetables.

Meaning: warm and friendly. Eg: They were able to maintain their cordial relationship despite their past rivalry.

Hosting International Sporting Events

Many people want their country to host an international sporting event. Others believe that international sporting events bring more problems than benefits. Discuss both views and give your own opinion. Some people think, hosting a sports competition at an international level is a bad idea and not beneficial for the country whereas some people show their interest in these competitions. According to me, sports play an important role in the development of the country in one or other way and for the promotion of these games, it is necessary to host various competitions at the international level. On the one hand, by hosting international sports events, some people might get interested in sports or maybe some people stand on the opposite side but there are various benefits of these competitions. Firstly, these events help an individual (sportsperson) in their personal growth in their particular sport and also promote our games at international level for instance, Kabbadi is the game which was played only by Indians but by these international events, the game has achieved the position at international level and now it is played worldwide. On the other hand, by hosting these competitions, many people might get attracted towards sports. We can observe, children or students are least interested in playing physical games and sports because of developments in technology and availability of mobiles and computer. Almost every child nowadays opts to play video games rather than playing in the fields. So by hosting these competitions, it might be beneficial for them if they get attracted towards sports which maybe a great carrier for them. To conclude, It is necessary for either private companies or governments to host the international sports competitions which is very important for the promotion of our games as well as for the children to attract them towards physical activities. In my opinion, these events are important as well as beneficial for country.

Popular events like the Football World Cup and other international sporting occasions are essential in easing international tension and releasing patriotic emotions in a safe way. To what extent you agree? Each year international sports events held through out the world.Through out the history it can be seen that they bring together people belonging from different cultures and regions. I certainly agree that these sports events such as football world cup and cricket tournaments not only helps in improving international relationships between different countries but also help people in expressing devotion to their country and promote nationalism. Generally in every geographical regions there are few nations that have disputes and they don't enjoy good diplomatic relations. Undoubtedly these sports competitions bring close together inhabitants of these countries. They get know positive aspects of each others that are mostly concealed by their government and media. For Instance India and Pakistan have tremendous diplomatic differences and also fought three wars but despite of this when international cricket series held each year it brings both nations close to each others. They support their favorite players and team irrespective of their nationality. And this type of sport events proved enormously beneficial in easing tension between two countries in last few decades. Moreover these international events attract tourists from all over the world, which not only bring enormous revenue to hosting country but at the same time allow locals to learn from people of different cultural backgrounds. It also alleviate hostility between people belonging from different countries.Furthermore when people support their teams it rises their patriotic emotions and bring them together as a nation.
